The devil is in the detail

Planning a wedding is no walk in the park, and with so many different aspects to consider, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed if you intend on planning everything yourself. Sarah Micallef speaks to two couples with an eye for detail and specific visions for their big day, and finds out how they pulled off the wedding of their dreams by being involved every step of the way.

A handmade tale

T

he couple didn’t plan as far ahead as you might think: the first things they secured were the hall and the church in April. Once the location was settled, they each booked a dressmaker. Anne Marie explains that having watched The Great Gatsby, she was inspired to incorporate 1920s details. She describes her vision, maintaining, “the only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted a dress I could be comfortable in. I also favoured some sort of sleeve, firstly because the wedding was in December and also because I’m not a big fan of strapless dresses. I went straight to a dressmaker – Maria, of Babettopolis – who I knew would come up with something original and elegant.” The finished dress certainly

Anne Marie and Mario, both 29, who got married last December, were keen on planning their wedding themselves. Albeit shying away from an overall theme, the pair asserts that they “wanted to take special care to include certain details and particularities that made the wedding our own and gave us a sense of belonging to the whole event.”

was that, having a long white underdress with a sweetheart neckline, a sheer overdress with embellished elbow length sleeves and handmade flowers adorning the waist. The same dressmaker also made the bridesmaids’ dresses, the colour of which, Anne Marie recalls, came about quite unusually. “When we met to discuss the dresses, Maria offered me a chocolate, and the wrapper was a really particular duck egg green colour. I decided there and then that that was the colour I wanted the bridesmaids’ dresses to be.” Next on the list was another unique detail: bespoke souvenirs. “Since our wedding was close to Christmas, we opted for Christmas tree decorations which could also be used as home decorations throughout the year. We wanted them to be original so we opted for handmade, hand embroidered souvenirs by The Secret Rose. The result: art deco influenced metallic squares, circles and triangles wishing our guests peace, love and joy.” Keen to add another unique touch to proceedings, the couple “got a printed invitation made, on the back of which we attached a photo which we had thought up and taken of two wooden mannequins in wedding outfits sitting on the windowsill of a chapel. The mannequins also made it to the wedding and spent most of it standing on the cake table.” Ò

Another handmade aspect came in the form of original confetti: “we decided that since it was a winter wedding it would be nice to have mini wool pompoms instead of the traditional paper confetti. We made these with some help from our mothers and then packaged and sealed each pack with labels with handwritten messages on them.” Other little details that made their day special include a container of sugared almonds on the visitor’s table as well as pretty yarn balls which the bridesmaids made and a friend arranged around the reception hall on the morning of the wedding. Looking back, their favourite part of the day was the “festive, happy atmosphere, which to us meant that all the months of planning and preparation had been worthwhile.” Their advice to couples looking to plan their own wedding is to “try not to stress too much. In the end, things that seem really important and worth making a fuss about just detract from the fun of the preparations!”

White wedding

Rebekah Baldacchino & Clayton Muscat Rebekah Baldacchino, 27, who married Clayton Muscat, 30, last October, took care of the wedding preparations herself, with some help from the groom. Admitting she’s “a bit of a control freak”, she was keen to plan their special day from start to finish, delegating things to her mum, sisters and best friend.

S

tarting preparations a year before the big day, the couple decided on a white wedding. Rebekah maintains, “I felt that white gave a sense of tranquillity. My bridal team was dressed in ivory, I had a petite bouquet of white tulips and the bridesmaids accompanied me with white gypsofilia and one pink tulip. Decorations in church were white bows with gypsofilia, candles and hearts. Once we came out of the church, the bridal team and ushers released bunches of white helium balloons.” The bridal team was transported to the reception in a white limousine, where the venue was decorated with white carpets, lace sheers, cake stands, chandeliers and all manner of other white décor. When it came to choosing her dress, Rebekah admits that while initially trying out cumbersome ball gowns, she agreed to try on a slim fitting dress at the behest of her sister, who was also her maid of honour. “I have a very petite figure, and I hate to admit that she Ò

was right! The dress I finally opted for was a simple ivory lace fitted dress,” she maintains. She also wanted a party dress to change into at the reception, so the seamstress who made the bridesmaids’ dresses, once again Maria of Babettopolis, made her a backless satin gown. The bridal party’s dresses “were all made of satin and chiffon, and gave off an angelic, Greek-like effect which worked well with the rest of the theme,” she states. Despite opting for some traditional elements for their wedding day, the couple was keen on some unique touches too. Rebekah recalls, “I didn’t want the traditional ‘Congratulations’ song while cutting the cake, so I opted for ‘All you need is love’ by The Beatles. It was very special, particularly because we have a very musical family and it was intimate as the

cake was placed under a gazebo where our families and close friends surrounded us and the rest of the guests gathered around.” She goes on to explain that their first dance was also not to a typical song, but a song from one of Rebekah’s favourite childhood movies, La Bamba: ‘We belong together’. Other noteworthy details at the wedding included photos hanging from trees, chandeliers, lamps and chill out areas. The DJ and saxophone player wore matching braces which Rebekah bought herself for them and the band, and as the dance music started, a spotlight was shone on the centre of the venue, where Rebekah emerged wearing her party dress, followed by her bridesmaids carrying baskets of flowery flip flops to hand out and the ushers carrying trays

of shooters with personalised shooter glasses that the guests could take home. Admitting she did get stressed, Rebekah points out that she found the guest list to be the most stressful aspect, as well as finding the perfect person to decorate the venue. Despite this, the couple maintains that when the day arrived they were calm, and had a lot of fun. As for advice to other couples, she maintains, “if you know what you want and what your likes and dislikes are, go ahead and plan your wedding with your husband, closest friends and family, because it will be a result of who you really are.” n

Come fly with me Since tying the knot last year, Stephanie and Paul Sultana have embarked on their exciting journey of wedded bliss. Ahead of their return to Malta following a two-year stint overseas, Martina Said speaks to the couple about their wonderful wedding day. P h oto s b y G e or g e S a g u n a

T

he start of Paul and Stephanie Sultana’s relationship was not a classic case of love at first sight, simply because the foundation of their acquaintance began as a solid friendship that later graduated into a lasting relationship. “We knew each other from a very young age because we lived in the same neighbourhood in Gozo,” says 24-year old Stephanie, who recently graduated with a Masters Degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Malta. “At some point, we took our friendship a step further, but we were just another normal, happy, teenage couple.” The two currently live in Doha, Qatar, after Paul, 26, an airline pilot with Air Malta, was offered a two-year job opportunity with Qatar Airways. While they’ll be returning to Malta this month, Paul was keen on sealing the deal with his then girlfriend of six years before making the move overseas for a long stretch of time. “After dating for so long we knew we were heading in that direction,” says Paul. “However, I got the final push I needed when I got the opportunity to work in Qatar. Considering that in Qatar you’re not allowed to live with your girlfriend and it would have been impossible to live without each other for that

length of time, as well as the fact that we both felt ready for it, I proposed to Steph, because I was confident I’d get a ‘yes’. ” Paul admits the proposal was, at the very least, a nervewracking experience, although Stephanie made it a little easier for him when she remarked it had been a while since they’d been out on a proper date together. “I snatched the opportunity, but that was as easy as it got,” he remarks. “With the help of my brother and his one-year-old son at that time, I managed to get the ring she always wanted from London. The only glitch was that this well-known ‘light blue box with a white ribbon’ was too big to fit in my jacket. Thankfully, the light in Mdina is so dim that she didn’t notice my abnormally one-sided squareish chest. As we sat down at the restaurant, we were welcomed by a glass of champagne and hence needed a reason for a toast – so out came the box and I proposed.” Stephanie says that the ring and proposal at that particular time took her by surprise, although in hindsight, she half suspected that Paul would pop the question sooner rather than later. “As soon as I saw the box, I had no doubt what was in it,” she says, “so I just left it there on the table and smiled at it for about five minutes, until Paul reminded me that I had to do two things: Ò

open the box itself and answer the all important question!” Paul left for Qatar one year before the wedding, which left Stephanie responsible for most of the preparations. “There were many hours spent on Skype, which was probably the most stressful and difficult part as there wasn’t much we could do to overcome the distance barrier; we simply had to deal with it. Another stressful aspect was the guest list – being Gozitan, you tend to know everyone, and that was a tough nut to crack.” Paul adds he often felt he was missing out on a lot while leaving his wife-to-be with quite a bundle of work, although he was confident she would do an amazing job and, in view of

how everything turned out on the day, he has no regrets. While Stephanie handled the majority of arrangements, there were certain aspects of the wedding that both were dead set on. “We were sure about the cathedral in Victoria as we formed part of the same parish, and we also both wanted a standing reception as opposed to a sit down meal, which tends to be more popular in Gozo.” With those aspects in mind, the planning phase began, with the chosen theme being that of a vintage garden wedding, using pastel colours to create a relaxing atmosphere, balancing out the hot summer evening. They recall the ceremony being the best part of the day – “to our surprise, the cathedral was full to the brim, as though it was the day of the parish feast of Victoria. It was nice having all our families and friends join us on such a special occasion.” Their choice of venue was naturally tied to the theme, which is why they opted for Palazzo Palina at Ta’ Cenc Hotel. “Its newly refurbished courtyard turned out Ò

The Cake

Ò“The catering was by Ta’ Cenc Hotel, and although I had described to the pastry chef what I wanted the cake to look like, I didn’t get to see it before the actual wedding day. The chef teamed up with my florist to create the most magical cake – each layer was dotted with satin trimming and colourful flowers filled up the space between each layer,” says Stephanie.

The Veil

ÑIn keeping with her soft spot for polka dots, Stephanie opted for a Swiss dot floor-length veil complete with a lace edge from online handmade store, Etsy. Victoria, the creator behind Handmade Concepts, also incorporated the texture into the invitations, complete with a dotted velvet fabric topped with a cream bow.

to be perfect for our theme. We decorated the trees with fairy lights and our decorator, Monique Tabone (Deco by Mon), turned the venue into a magical garden with candles and flower pomanders hanging from the trees,” explains Stephanie. “We wanted to create a relaxing and sociable environment for our guests, and we managed to achieve that. Our vision became a reality and if we were to plan it all again, we wouldn’t change a single thing.” While they adhered to certain traditional elements in order to complement the vintage theme, Paul and Stephanie didn’t want the whole affair to be too formal, but rather wanted to ensure their guests could mingle and have fun. “We tried to create a chillout environment with cushions, soft lighting and a lot of candles. The band, Big Band Brothers, turned out to be the perfect choice for our wedding theme. They had the most awesome playlist to complement our theme, from swing to jazz and blues.” Ò

The newlyweds shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s Moon River, as it evoked wonderful memories of their engagement.

We tried to create a chill-out environment with cushions, soft lighting and a lot of candles.

With such attention to detail given to the entire wedding, it comes as no surprise that Stephanie was sure about her choice of wedding dress, although she claims this certainly was a case of love at first sight. “Although I did not have a specific style in mind, I always wanted lace and soft tulle in my dress. I visited three different bridal boutiques and tried on several dresses in the first two, but when I tried the first dress on at Ivory & Co, I knew it was the one,” says Stephanie. “It had a lace bodice and tulle skirt with lace appliqué – it was fun yet traditional, without being too formal. It was ideal for a standing reception because I could move easily in it.” Her bridal entourage also donned elegant dresses, with floor-length gowns in pastel hues from BVR Boutique. The newlyweds shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s Moon River, as it evoked wonderful memories of their engagement, and continued their celebrations until the early hours of the morning. They admit the day was fantastic from start to finish, and for Paul and Stephanie, the only regret they share is that, like all good things, their wedding had to come to an end. n

A touch of class

Following their decision to finish their studies before getting married, Michelle and Robert Spiteri had to wait a while before their special day, but as Sarah Micallef discovers, good things come to those who wait. P h oto s b y To n i o Lo m b a r d i

aving met through common friends in their teens, Michelle and Robert Spiteri dated for some time before tying the knot, as Michelle recalls, “I wanted to finish university before getting married, but seeing as Robert chose the longest course (Law is six years!) this meant the wait was a little longer. We would talk about getting married but not seriously… though I did throw hints that I wanted a surprise proposal!” And she wasn’t disappointed, as Robert stepped up to the plate one evening. “We were meant to go to dinner with a couple who are friends of ours, but they couldn’t make it because ‘something came up last minute’, ” Michelle explains. “We didn’t want to cancel the booking as it was quite late and it was my favourite restaurant, so off we went to Medina. After the meal I simply had to have dessert as I love the warm nut tart, and as I happily munched away, prolonging dinner, Robert sat across the table somewhat nervous (though this wasn’t apparent to me at the time).” It was a quiet Wednesday night in August, so after dinner, Michelle suggested going for a stroll along the bastions, which Robert quickly agreed to. “What I initially planned as a slow stroll to the bastions seemed like a race to get there, as Robert's pace began to quicken,” she says. “We made it to the lovely view, and he guided me to a spot under a street light.

There, he pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me. On it was a poem about our journey together, with the final line reading: ‘Will you marry me?’ He took out a lovely ring, and I squealed ‘yes!’” A two-year engagement was to follow, which gave the couple ample time to plan their big day. Set on an evening wedding due to Michelle’s love of long dresses, the couple’s only disagreement was the guest list. Robert explains, “Michelle wanted a smallish wedding whereas I wanted a larger number of guests. We ended up with 350 guests, which was a middle of the road decision.” The chosen accent colour for the wedding was teal, in keeping with family tradition after Michelle’s mother and sister both had blue themed weddings. Robert wanted a classical setting for the reception, which led to the choice of the Phoenicia Hotel. “The setting by the pool was perfect,” he says. As for the dress, Michelle headed straight for Wedding Bells, which is where her sister had found her own wedding dress. She explains how she had a little help to make the final decision, maintaining, “I wanted something simple and classic. On my first visit with my mum we narrowed the choice down to two, though my preference was already leaning towards one of them! On my second visit my mother had back up – my sister Ò

and father. They both liked the dress I preferred and the decision was made. It was exactly what I wanted.” When the big day finally arrived, Michelle admits to feeling “strangely calm with a permanent smile on my face,” though the nerves kicked in later, as her car pulled up to the church: “I am not too comfortable with having lots of people looking at me, but everything calmed down when I saw Robert at the end of the aisle.” Robert, on the other hand, was all too pleased on the day of the wedding. He maintains, “I was happy it had finally arrived. I spent the day having fun with my best man, who kept me calm and collected, and helped me out with last minute arrangements.” Mass was celebrated by family friend Monsignor Mario Borg, who made the trip from his hometown in Munxar, Gozo to marry the couple. Michelle looks back on the ceremony, stating “the church was full, and the ceremony was lovely, as the priest knew us and could talk about us. Exchanging the vows was definitely emotional for me. I shed some tears which later turned to giggles as I laughed at myself for crying!” In turn, Robert admits that watching Michelle tear up was very touching, stating “all in all the wedding ceremony was quite overwhelming.” When it came time for their first dance at the reception, the song they chose had a special meaning for the couple. “Our first dance was to ‘Never Gonna be Alone’ by Nickelback. In my teenage years I loved Nickelback and Robert had once bought me the CD. We would often listen to it together, so their songs remind me of good times we had together,” Michelle recalls. As the night wore on, the guests gathered round for the cutting of the

cake, but there was one notable absence – the maid of honour. Michelle looks back on this mishap, admitting, “my maid of honour, Josianne, missed the cutting of the cake and it was my fault! I asked her to get the confetti basket from the hotel reception, miscalculating how far it was from the pool area. Ò

The church was full, and the ceremony was lovely.

I wanted to wait for her but was urged to cut the cake before she made it back as people were gathering round. I felt so guilty!” Looking back on their wedding however, the pair agrees that it was an overall success. Michelle notes her favourite parts of the day, stating, “seeing Robert at the church when I walked in with my father was my favourite part, but I also loved seeing everyone dance along to the music Red Electrick played – everyone let loose, young and old!” As for Robert, looking at his beautiful bride as she walked into the church is a memory he will never forget, as well as an

altogether more humorous memorable moment: “a couple of minutes before the wedding, fireworks were fired off… these happened to be for another wedding that was being celebrated at the Excelsior Hotel, but everyone at our wedding thought it was our own doing. I guess the cat is out of the bag now!” n

Thoughtful souvenirs

“We preferred to opt for a donation instead of a souvenir – we donated to Cancer Research that gave us cute heart shaped pins as a token of appreciation. My bridal party and mother then wrapped sugared almonds in little baskets and attached a thank you note with the Cancer Research logo and pin provided,” Michelle says.

a magical winter wonderland

H

aving enjoyed the fairy-tale wedding of their dreams in December 2013, young couple Cherieanne and Sheldon McKay were looking forward to their first holiday as Mr and Mrs. Having said that, this wasn’t just their honeymoon but their first-ever overseas trip together, so they wanted it to be really special! “We actually considered Australia to begin with, but soon realised it was out of budget, especially as I am still a student,” says Cherieanne. “So, our winter wedding (and the fact that Sheldon had never been abroad, and I had never been abroad during the winter season)

“Yes, planning things is important, but it’s much more important to enjoy yourself as much as possible and to make the most of your destination. The memories will live on forever, and that’s what matters most.”

Top Tip

Thinking of the perfect honeymoon for your winter wedding? Take a leaf out of Cherieanne and Sheldon McKay’s book, and enjoy an adventure filled with skiing, jet-biking, sledging, fun and much more on the snow-capped peaks of Livigno. By Jo Caruana.

inspired our winter-themed honeymoon!” After some deliberation, the couple settled on a snow-enveloped adventure in Livigno with YTC Travel, complete with sledging, jet-biking and cable car rides. “I’m normally quite nervous about trying new things while Sheldon is the adventurous one, but we were both eager to have as much fun as possible on our honeymoon. We knew we wanted to have experiences that we could remember for the rest of our lives.” The couple flew from Malta to Milan a week after their wedding, and then took the four-hour coach ride to Livigno. “We instantly fell in love with the destination – the setting is stunning and bowled us over, and it was lovely that everyone was so welcoming,” says Cherieanne. “We both learnt to ski while we were there and I still can’t believe we improved so much in just a few days! Of course there were a few hilarious hiccups – including when my skis got entwined in Sheldon’s and everyone commented that we couldn’t be apart… even for a second! And we did fall over a few times. Thankfully Mariano, the YTC instructor, was always there to help. Sheldon even went on to win one of the group races!”

Other highlights included their cable car ride to the top of the Carosello 3000 Mountain. “It was absolutely amazing to watch the enthusiasts and experienced skiers travel from the top of the mountain to the very bottom. I didn’t manage anything like that but I did enjoy my sledging jaunt!” Cherieanne smiles. “It’s amazing the sense of freedom that you get from sitting on a plastic board, whizzing down a hill at tremendous speeds!” Sheldon, meanwhile, enjoyed indulging his hobby as a motorcycle enthusiast aboard the jet-skis. “Plus the go-carts were brilliant,” he says. “We went for rides on them almost every day before dinner.” Ò

Between ski and activity sessions, Cherieanne and Sheldon also found time to explore the pretty village of Livigno. “We loved the scenery, as well as the bus service. It’s absolutely brilliant because it’s free-of-charge and you just hop-on and off as you like, no questions asked! It was ideal for exploring the surrounding areas and so convenient.” The couple also went to the Husky Village nearby to meet the sled dogs. “We went on a ride through the frozen landscape and it was absolutely breath-taking,” says Cherieanne. “At one point, though, we were instructed to do a U-turn on the dog sled; we had to run

We also enjoyed the copious amounts of sweet hot chocolate that we drank throughout the vacation; it’s the ideal treat when you’re feeling cold.” After a week of snow-covered bliss, Cherieanne and Sheldon returned to Malta – eager to start their new life

together. Both said, they’re still looking back fondly on their honeymoon and hoping to return to Livigno soon. “We mention it every couple of days! It really was heaven on earth – from the gorgeous scenery to the great range of things to do. It was the perfect blend of activity and relaxation, and we would recommend it to anyone,” Cherieanne adds. n

In search of a home With so many properties available on the market, you’d think finding the ideal home is a fairly straightforward affair, but it rarely ever is. Martina Said reviews two contrasting properties – a modern apartment and a rustic house of character – that are fully furnished and finished, and patiently waiting to welcome their new owners.

A modern marvel

Located merely a few steps away from the seafront of Balluta, this spacious apartment certainly has a lot going for it. It is centrally situated in the hub of the area, in close proximity to Sliema as well as St Julian's, and boasts a total area of 160 square metres. altogether. While the whole apartment enjoys parquet flooring, the solid wood platform in the living, kitchen and dining area is a truly distinct feature, creating a unique look and feel beneath one’s feet. A recessed light within the wooden platform also serves to separate the kitchen from the living room, and both spacious rooms enjoy modern, brand new furniture and appliances. Another remarkable feature was included in the living quarters – the owners commissioned a bespoke system of rails to be created from the beginning to the end of the corridor, to accommodate sliding glass doors, allowing more light to enter the rooms while also saving space, making it both appealing and practical. The apartment is modern, but not Ò

The property comprises three equallysized double bedrooms and two large bathrooms, a spacious open plan dining and living area, and a kitchen. One of its most appealing factors, however, is its finish and tasteful decor, whereby its owners left no stone unturned in ensuring it is fully equipped with all the practical necessities without compromising its style. The sleeping and living quarters are separated by a large glass door, so that the sleeping quarters are completely shut off and well concealed, offering privacy and seclusion. The area is also cleverly distinguished from the rest of the apartment thanks to a solid wood platform in the living area that elevates it somewhat, creating a different floor

In the village heart

Located in the quiet and charming village of Siggiewi, this beautifully converted house of character is a thoughtful balance of ‘old versus new’, while still retaining its natural charm. Comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a guest toilet, an outdoor space, interconnected garage facilities, a washroom and internal courtyard among other features, it certainly ticks all the boxes.

minimalist and is finished to the highest of standards. With the exception of the bedroom furniture, all doors, the dining table and living units are Wenger wood. George Vassallo, Sliema branch manager at Frank Salt Real Estate Ltd says this property is ideal for various clients, especially first-time buyers and newlyweds seeking out property in St Julian's. “An added plus is that it is being sold fully furnished and highly finished, and will make an excellent family home. However, it is also ideal as a rental investment and can return a rental yield of at least €1,000 per month. There are many foreign nationals working in Sliema and St Julian's, looking for rental properties that allow them to easily commute to work and also enjoy their social life, without the need for a car.”

The property was structurally converted while bearing in mind its original appeal – the owners thoughtfully avoided using old stone that did not form part of the original structure, but rather reconstructed certain areas using new stone, with the belief that what is old should remain old and what is added on should be new. So was the case, for instance, when carrying out a structural conversion of the entrance to the central courtyard – the owners wanted an arched entrance as opposed to the square one they found

there already, and constructed it using new stone. A decently-sized cellar was also discovered by coincidence during construction works, and beautifully converted into a modern cellar. The owners equipped the property with the best appliances, including ACs, central heating and solar panels, as well as Gres tiling. The larger part of the ground floor area comprises an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space – the three areas were cleverly distinguished from each Ò

One of the best aspects of this house of character, however, is certainly the ample natural light that pours in from all facets.

other by creating varying levels of flooring, while still allowing guests to freely communicate irrespective of which ‘level’ they're at. One of the best aspects of this house of character, however, is certainly the ample natural light that pours in from all facets. Adding lots of windows and doors was a priority for the owners while converting the property, in order to ensure that every single room enjoys the most outdoor lighting it possibly could. With that in mind, they also white-washed the modern walls while leaving the old stone in its natural form, and opted for dim yellow lighting to complement the stonework, encased in fixtures made of natural materials such as alabaster. When scouting around for soft furnishings, the owners were initially torn between an ultra-modern approach, in order to contrast the décor with the general mood of the property, and a classic one, but in the end they opted for the latter, and embellished the property with a classic sofa, artworks and furniture. The owners believe the property is suitable for a variety of buyers, especially first-time buyers and young families. Having raised young children there

themselves, they can vouch that it is child friendly, while gates can easily be installed for utmost safety. It is also ideal for anyone wishing to retire in a quiet village, as well as tourists seeking to live in a traditional property steeped in culture. Mr Vassallo says “one of the main advantages of this property is its location, but its yard is also a plus, providing adequate entertainment space for BBQs in summer or cosy dinners in the evening during winter. Other entertainment space is also available on the roof.” He adds that

it is also an ideal property for anyone with an affinity for Maltese traditional houses and the architecture and design mood these present, “such as stone arches, wooden beams, floor slabs and myriad other features, which make each house of character so unique. The present owners carried out an excellent conversion project.” n Both properties are enlisted with Frank Salt Real Estate Ltd www.franksalt.com.mt

Shift to outdoor living ÑPatio furniture by Home Ideas (www.mimeproject.com)

Planning how to decorate your home this summer? This year it’s all about affordable outdoor living technology, stylish all-weather materials and increasingly-sophisticated patio furniture designs. Jo Caruana unearths the latest trends and tips for updating your outdoor look.

W

ith the warm weather finally with us, more and more people are getting out their outdoor furniture or buying new pieces for their decks, patios and terraces. But are there particular trends you should be looking out for? Just like with indoor furniture, outdoor style goes through cycles, and every season brings with it new ideas, colours and looks to ensure your exterior designs are bang up-to-date. If you want to place your outdoors firmly into 2014, there are a few key trends you could follow. We’ve chosen our favourites and outlined them below.

Glorious green fingers

Gardening is definitely back in vogue. Whether you’ve got a small balcony, a medium-sized yard or a sprawling back garden, there are things you can grow. If space is limited, vertical gardening is a concept worth looking into. This includes everything from hanging baskets to upright herb gardens, with pots that stack one-above-the-other. Ò

58 bliss JUNE 2014 § Home

If you do have room, think about growing vegetables in pots, or even putting in a vegetable patch. With the organic, growyour-own movement gaining ground, it’s wonderful to know that you have actually grown something yourself. Most herbs, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, chilli and asparagus fare well in the Mediterranean climate, and the results are very satisfying.

Entertainment under the stars

Just like indoors, we’re no longer content to sit with a book or just relax in our outdoor spaces – we want to be entertained! As a result, there has been a major move towards the creation of suitable outdoor entertainment options. A huge trend for this summer is the outdoor cinema. If budget is no problem, you can have a custom-made screen to fit your space perfectly. However, if you’d rather go DIY-chic, simply paint a part of your wall with silver-screen paint, and use a projector to watch all your favourite movies. This is great fun for family events or special occasions – just don’t forget the outdoor popcorn machine (or even toast marshmallows on your BBQ)!

Create social spaces

With more time on our hands and longer hours of daylight, we all feel more sociable during the summertime. Turning your outdoors or garden into a social space can really bring it to life. For instance, we love the new ‘fire bowls’ on the market, which combine all the practicality of a BBQ with a warming place for guests to sit round. Aside from being stylish, these items will keep your visitors warm long into the evening and frighten off the insects that can prove so annoying when entertaining outdoors. As a fun alternative to you doing all of the cooking, chop up raw food and provide condiments, while your guests can enjoy cooking for themselves. It’s the ideal summer alternative to a fondue! Ò

60 bliss JUNE 2014 § Home

If that doesn’t take your fancy, you may be tempted by another 2014 trend – outdoor carpets. These bright rugs are made from recycled polypropylene but are styled like traditional rugs, which makes them both stylish and practical. Whether you have a spacious garden or a tiny balcony, these rugs provide a simple way to change the look and feel of your space without having to redecorate. As with indoor rooms, a rug outside will encourage guests into the space, draw furniture together and offer your feet an alternative to bare ground. Their colourful, stylish designs will anchor furnishings and provide an interior like-appeal that can also withstand the outdoor elements (yes, even the harsh Maltese sun!)

Update your colour scheme

If you want to make sure your balcony or patio is decorated with the most modern furniture, choose items of the musthave colours of 2014. Black and white are always in style and a safe choice. For something more colourful, choose teal or dark purple, and mix-and-match to make a statement. Nauticalinspired items are also very popular this year, so choose a scheme that blends well with white and blue, and seek out pretty nautical items to highlight it with.

ÓDecorative pillows by Laurie Bell ÑFire Bowl BBQ by Calenta

If you prefer a more neutral base palette, you could update your space with patterns, whether in outdoor throws, cushions or feature walls. There are numerous ‘soft’ options to choose from too – large floral prints, stripes and paisleys are in vogue, along with bold, solid-coloured pieces.

Think practically

Of course, above all else, you need to make your outdoor space work for you and your family. Will you be dining outside? If so, you’ll need a comfortable outdoor table that can withstand the heat. Will you be spending time outdoors during the day? Then you need to think about how to create shade – whether with umbrellas, an awning or a gazebo. Will there be children running around? If so, think of adding a sandpit or a safe space where you know they can hang out without you worrying. Before you get stuck in to colour schemes and trends, plan your requirements carefully and act accordingly. Then look forward to a brilliant summer of outdoor fun! n

When collide

hen Joan and Austin Azzopardi first exchanged a word or two, they were both too young to even remember. Years after getting married, they discovered – thanks to an old photo – that they attended the same kindergarten as toddlers. They have no recollection of such early memories, but, as fate would have it, they crossed paths again as teenagers, and never looked back since. “We were very young when we met – I was 15 and Austin was 16,” says Joan. “At the time, I used to hang out with my clique of girls at Ghar id-dud, which today is the Sliema Chalet, and Austin with his group of boys as we both lived in Sliema. We first started going out on dates as a group, but shortly after, we began going on regular dates alone, every Saturday between six and eight in the evening.” The loved-up pair dated for eight years before tying the knot, although they got engaged three years prior, just before Joan started working as a teacher. “I was never formally proposed to,” she says,

giving Austin a sideways glance before bursting into a fit of laughter. “It was simply taken for granted that we were heading in that direction.” Their engagement party was an elaborate affair, complete with a reception hall, orchestra and a long guest list. “Engagement parties were fashionable at the time and almost as elaborate as the wedding itself. Austin also spent his first wage on my engagement ring,” says Joan. Their big day arrived on 19th March 1975, and while Joan woke up feeling nervous and excited – albeit slightly tired from a sleepless night caused by a head full of rollers – Austin woke up to a freshly prepared steak cooked for him by his mother, who feared he would get hungry on his wedding day. “There I was, eating a steak at eight in the morning,” he laughs. “She was right though, you don’t eat much on the day.” Joan’s fondest memory of the day is when she walked down the aisle of

the Sanctuary of our Lady of Fatima in Gwardamangia, in a white crepe satin dress with guipure detailing, complemented with a cross pendant and matching earrings given to her by her mother for the big day. Resting on her father’s arm, she knew – being an only child – that he was immensely proud of her. “My favourite moment,” says Austin, “was when Joan joined me at the altar. I was relieved to see she hadn’t changed her mind.” Once they arrived at the reception hall at the Salina Bay Hotel, they were overwhelmed by the number of people inside. “Everyone starts greeting and kissing you, and before you know it, it’s time to cut the cake. The day flew by, it was a blur.” The newlyweds shared their first dance to a classic tune played by Vinnie and his band, and later enjoyed a 10-day honeymoon in Italy. Today, one year shy of their 40th wedding anniversary, the affectionate pair appears to be enjoying harking back to that memorable day, while eagerly looking forward to sharing more fond memories with their four children and, to date, five grandchildren. n
