The
Wedding Dress Diaries
The experience of buying and wearing your wedding dress is undoubtedly a sentimental one. Yet these three women have made sure that their wedding dresses will resonate far beyond their big day alone, as Martina Said discovers.
Bridal tea party
Lara Cutajar Cassar and Tyrone Cutajar exchanged vows on 15 June 2014 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Paul in Mdina. Not long after their special day came to an end, Lara longed for an occasion to re-use her wedding dress, and did exactly that by hosting a high tea party. On the last day of her honeymoon in Santorini, Lara was reminiscing about her wedding day and how much she loved wearing her vintage glamour wedding dress, made entirely of fine French lace, fitted and with a low back, which she had designed herself. On their journey back home, Lara was inspired by the idea of hosting a wear-your-wedding-dress-again high tea party, where she and her married friends would get their hair and make-up done together, enjoy a photo shoot and afterwards indulge in delicious food. “When we settled down back home, I researched the idea and found that this sort of party had been organised before, even on a much larger scale, and so I became more enthusiastic about it, shared the idea with my closest friends
and got a great response.” Together with her sister and sistersin-law, Lara kicked off preparations for the event which was to take place in the formal dining room at her house. The first phase of the day involved lots of pampering that she describes as being immensely fun and full of laughter. “Later in the afternoon, we all got dressed in our wedding gowns and veils in preparation for the photoshoot by George Scintilla, who captured many funny moments. The tea party began at 6pm and we indulged in cupcakes, mini cakes, sandwiches, scones and wedding themed buscuits,” says Lara. “It was strictly a girls-only event. Everything about this party was girly from the pink bunting and the props to the bridal-themed biscuits.” Lara’s sentimentality and affinity for her dress might have her hang on to it for a while yet. “I would like to donate my wedding dress to charity, but haven’t found it in my heart to part with it yet. After all, it’s only been a few months since the wedding!” She is certainly looking forward to an occasion to wear the cute after-party dress she wore on her wedding day though – “it is a fun, short yet elegant dress which would be perfect for a party, and will remind me of the great fun we had on our day as well as all the the dancing that ensued after the reception.” Ò

Something old
Caroline Gatt and Richard Muscat got married on 22 June 2013 at the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta. Although the wedding was a typically modern affair, Caroline chose to say ‘I do’ in her mother’s wedding dress, who wore it way back in August 1962.
“The dress was made entirely of French guipure lace,” says Caroline. Made for her mum by Malta’s celebrated fashion couturiere Madame Manfre, “it was a classic full length shift dress with a beautiful circular train made of the same lace and satin, and with three-quarter sleeves. My mother wore it with a long tulle veil.” Despite always having wanted to wear an old dress on her wedding day, Caroline reveals that her mother’s dress was not part of the initial plan. She had bought a sixties Rui Spohr wedding dress from Brazil many years before the wedding, and asked seamstress Maria Muscat, who altered her mother’s dress, to see if she could alter it for her. “When she came over, my father also wanted to show her my mother’s dress. I tried it on and it fitted virtually perfectly. I had not appreciated the beauty of the lace before – my mother had removed the sleeves and worn it as an evening gown in the early years of her marriage, 20 years before I was born, but I always remember it hanging in her wardrobe, which is why it was very familiar and somewhat taken for granted.” The process of completing the dress was painstaking. The seamstress used the sleeves to add a section of lace to the hem of the dress and changed the neckline which needed reinforcing. For a beautiful finishing touch, she took two of the ivy leaves and sewed them to the neckline to look like a butterfly. “I only saw the alterations through photos at

first as I was living in Scotland at the time, which was terrifying because they didn’t do justice to the detailed work Maria had done,” she explains. “I also needed to have the dress posted to a dry cleaner in the UK specialised in dry cleaning vintage fabrics, before trying it on again and posting it back to Malta for the final touches.” Completing Caroline’s look was a hand-made pure silk tulle veil, and a pair of earrings borrowed from her late grandmother. Caroline’s wish of wearing a dress with a history of its own was certainly fulfilled, although sadly, her mother never got to see her wear it, having passed away just three months before the wedding. “In the end, wearing her dress was one way of having her as close to me as possible on our special day.” Would she ever use it again in a different form? “Well, my mother had used it as an evening dress, but I think I’m going to keep it safe. Who knows, maybe my daughter will want to wear it one day!” Ò

Two little dresses
“
On the day her daughters were born, Anna Maria’s mother suggested using her wedding dress to make baptism dresses for the girls.
In March 2014, three years after their wedding on 11 June, 2011, Anna Maria and Johann Cardona Schranz welcomed twin daughters into the world. Following her mother’s advice, Anna Maria had her wedding dress transformed into two petite dresses for the baptism of their bundles of joy. For three years after tying the knot, Anna Maria’s pristine wedding dress remained sealed and hanging in a wardrobe at her parents’ house. She recalls the style of the dress she wore on her big day – “I was after a classic and timeless style, ideal for a summer wedding, with a hint of sparkle. After visiting a handful of local suppliers and trying on some dresses that caught my attention, the dress presented itself in the form of an A-line cut of tulle over organza lace, with fine crystal details.” On the day her daughters were born, Anna Maria’s mother suggested using her wedding dress to make baptism dresses for the girls, and after giving the idea some thought, they set about looking for someone to get it done. “My aunt recommended Gozo-based seamstress Vicky Xuereb for the job. The original wedding dress had to be taken apart to create the two dresses and, following a number of meetings to discuss our requirements, Vicky came up with a final dress design.”
”
ÑÔ© Armand Sciberras
Anna Maria says she wanted the dresses to be as comfortable as possible in spite of the traditional long styles of baptism dresses. “We opted to have the girls baptised at the church of Sacro Cuor in Sliema, and the only date available was a July afternoon with the likelihood that the heat would get the better of everyone. Therefore the dresses needed to be as lightweight as possible. In fact it did turn out to be a very humid afternoon, so we were glad we settled for that option.” Despite the sentimental value often tied to holding on to a wedding dress after it’s been used, Anna Maria says her decision to use it for her daughters’ baptism dresses was unquestionably the right one. “Rather than leaving the dress to wither away or sell it – never to be seen again, nothing can match the feeling of seeing our girls in the dress I got married in, three years after our wedding. I did, however, hold on to the cathedral-length veil covered in crystals, as well as my shoes, which to date are still almost intact,” she says. “And who knows? Perhaps I will live to see one of the girls walk down the aisle in my wedding veil.” n

A splendid summer celebration
With a stunning venue, beautiful choice of colours and a loved-up couple at the centre of it all, it is hard to sum up Stephanie Hodgkins and Adrian Micallef’s wedding as anything less than perfect. Martina Said speaks to the newlyweds about their special day. P h oto s by GE O R GE S C INTI L L A
T
he promise of forever after came surely and swiftly for this young couple. Adrian Micallef, 36, proposed to Stephanie Hodgkins, 29, after one year and three months of dating, and Stephanie says the timing couldn’t have been better for both of them when they first crossed paths. “We were both single when we first met and immediately fell in love – we both knew we wanted to be together.” Adrian found the perfect romantic spot to propose to his future wife in London – “it was November when
he went down on one knee in the moonlight, next to a vintage car parked by a lovely tree in Notting Hill, near Portobello Road,” says Stephanie, a make-up artist, aesthetician and model by profession. Together they began preparing for their elegant summer wedding on 19 July last year, with the ceremony taking place at St Philip’s Church in Senglea, followed by a reception at the Gardjola Gardens close by. “We decided to do everything ourselves, with welcomed help from family and friends,” they say.
Being an artist and interior designer, Adrian was responsible for a number of hand-made items including props for the venue such as the cake table, sign posts, photo booth, ring holder for the ceremony, wooden bowties for the groomsmen and himself as well as the miniature paintings which they gave out as souvenirs, apart from the cars and suits. “Adrian’s mother, who previously worked as a florist, took care of all the flower arrangements including flowers for the church, my bouquet and handmade corsages for the bridesmaids. My father was of great help too, and with some assistance from my mother and I, prepared all the invitations and wedding programmes that my matron of honour, Kelly, and I designed,” says Stephanie. “Kelly also made a burlap banner which we used on the cake table. It was challenging balancing work and wedding planning due to our busy schedules, but we began in January and all was manageable within six months.” They opted for an organic rustic theme for their big day, and with the two of them being perfectionists, Adrian and Stephanie were both particular about specific details tying in with the theme. Ò

“
We decided to do everything ourselves, with welcomed help from family and friends.
“Everything we prepared had to complement the theme, so we used recycled paper for the invitations and envelopes, and tied organic twine around
the invitations and wedding programmes. Adrian used recycled wooden pallets and fallen tree trunks to create all the wooden features,” says Stephanie. “We are both artists and love nature, so there was no doubt about the theme that we wanted for our wedding. We also incorporated mint and peach – both of which are fresh colours – into the décor, as well as natural wood features.” The couple was set on a summer wedding, and chose the date carefully to work around their busy work schedules. As for the reception, the choice was also fairly straightforward. “We wanted to take advantage of the island’s summer weather, so we wanted an outdoor venue with a garden and a breathtaking view, which the Gardjola Gardens are famous for. Following that, the church was an easy decision. Just up the road from the venue we came across St Philip’s Church, which is full of detail and history.” While they received advice on venue options, they wanted to handle all other aspects themselves to give their wedding a personal touch, and only engaged the help of a coordinator, Martina Selvagi, for the day in order to ensure that all was in
”
order at the venue. A special moment for every brideto-be is undoubtedly wedding dress shopping. Due to her experience in modelling, Stephanie frequently had the opportunity to try on different wedding dresses, which made shopping for one for her own wedding something of an easier task. “I knew what I did and didn’t like, however I opted to have my dress custom-made by Cross My Heart bridal wear. That way I was able to create my perfect dress – it had a heart-shaped neckline, a low back and fish tail in a combination of chiffon and lace. I also had a lovely veil and detachable lace cap sleeves that gave the dress a keyhole feature on the back which I removed during the reception.” Ò
Real Wedding § MARCH 2015 bliss 27
Stephanie took care of her own makeup on the day and complemented her fresh look with a soft ponytail by Mixa’s Salon. The arrival of their big day meant a combination of nerves and eager anticipation for the couple, although Adrian admits that while he was every inch thrilled and joyful about the prospect of getting married, the reality of it all didn’t kick in until he stood at the altar waiting for Stephanie to walk down the aisle. The bride herself woke up that morning feeling happy, ready and prepared for the day ahead. They agree that the ceremony was a wonderfully touching experience, the best part being when they said their vows, exchanged rings and were pronounced husband and wife, after which they both lit a candle that they will fondly hold on to. Stephanie says their wedding day was fairly traditional from beginning to end, with some twists in order to accommodate the needs of those attending. Ò
“
We are both artists and love nature, so there was no doubt about the theme that we wanted for our wedding.

Custom-made cake
“We ordered our cake in the wedding colours we chose throughout, which were mint and peach,” says Stephanie. “It consisted of a two-tier plain cake with coloured frosting and a special cake topper that was one-of-a-kind and one of our favourite wedding gifts, which my cousins had custom-made abroad. The food, by Osborne Caterers, was also superb and enjoyed by all the guests.”
”
Natural textures In keeping with their love of nature and hand-made creations, Stephanie and Adrian turned to wood as their raw material of choice, which they incorporated into a number of details, such as the cake table, sign posts, the holder for their rings, as well as the groom and groomsmen’s bowties.

“Since many relatives and friends flew over from abroad, including the UK, Sweden, Dubai and the USA, we requested the ceremony to be in English. Being half English, I carried out some British traditions too, namely ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a penny for your shoe’ – my sister gave me a penny and attached it to the bottom of my shoe.”
“
One of my favourite parts of the day was the surprise dance routine performed by the groom and his groomsmen – it was unexpected and priceless.
”
The newlyweds shared their first dance to John Mayer’s ‘Your body is a wonderland’, which Stephanie says wholly represented how fast they bonded and how quickly their love for each other developed. “We also had a second dance to ‘All of me’ by John Legend, sung to us as a surprise by one of Adrian’s best men, Jake Lindgren. One of my favourite parts of the day was the surprise dance routine performed by the groom and his groomsmen – it was unexpected and priceless!” n

A RUSTIC ROMANCE Christian and Stephanie Caruana’s unconventional vision for their wedding initially left family and friends scratching their heads. Here, they tell Sarah Micallef how they achieved a beautiful yet simple affair, which served as a true reflection of themselves. P h oto s by I a n Ab d i ll a
S
tephanie Scicluna, 25, first met Christian Caruana, 32, through a common friend, though it was certainly not a case of love at first sight. “I never even noticed him until a friend of mine pointed out he’s rather attractive and I should go out with him,” Stephanie remarks. She recalls how they went on to meet at Nadur Carnival, where she decided to take her friend’s advice. “I made the first move, and actually caught him quite off guard! Some years later, Chris decided it was time to pop the question, though it came as a surprise to Steph: “I had always thought that weddings weren’t Chris’ cup of tea, that is, until he proposed.” Looking back on the proposal, Chris recalls, “it was a public holiday and the weather was great. I had originally decided to propose on a different day, but took the opportunity and suggested we go to my family’s field.” While there, he got down on one knee and pretended to tie his shoe laces. “I asked Steph to help me get up, and she naively gave me her hand. I held it in mine, and with the other, took out a ring and asked her to be my wife. She told me to stop goofing around and get up, but eventually realised I wasn’t pulling her leg, so she tried to contain her laughter, and said yes,” he says. It was then time to start planning the wedding – the vast majority of which was taken care of by Steph. She explains that there were clashes with family and friends who didn’t share the couple’s vision for their non-traditional celebration. “Very few people could understand and accept what I wanted,” she maintains. Chris explains the couple’s intentions for their wedding, stating, “I dislike most traditional weddings and was scared of having to
go through all the things you have to do if you’re getting married. Luckily, Steph felt the same, and I’m glad to say that we had a wedding that reflected us as a couple.” Doing away with tradition, the couple organised a relaxed, vegan affair, with most of the decorations comprising recycled or upcycled items and materials. It was important to them to have a civil wedding ceremony outdoors, and to do as many things as possible themselves, including invitations, souvenirs and decorations. Despite not having a particular theme in mind, the pair wanted their wedding to look “as easy and natural as possible,” and refer to it as a DIY affair, having done almost everything themselves. So much so that Steph laughs, “they had to actually convince me not to self-cater our wedding, and I’m glad they did, because we had A LOT to do.” In the end, she conceded to leave catering in the hands of Seasons Caterers, while drinks were taken care of by Farsons. The big day was set for 14 August 2014, the eve of a public holiday. Both the ceremony and the reception were organised at Xrobb l-Ghagin Nature Park, which holds a special place in the couple’s hearts. “Xrobb l-Ghagin is our favourite beach in Malta, and its Nature Park serves as a Sustainable Development Centre. Ò

Doing away with tradition once again, Steph reveals that Chris helped her choose her dress, explaining, “I wanted something flowy that was easy and comfortable to wear. Chris was patient enough to help me decide, after months of having different designs shoved in his face. Friends and family members also suffered the same ordeal, and they too gave me their much appreciated views.” Ò
We’re all for sustainable living so it seemed to be the perfect venue, but it was the magnificent view that really won us over,” Steph says. In keeping with the DIY element, the ethereal ceremony area was decorated with burlap and recycled curtains for the carpet, vintage furniture, dried sempreviva flowers and a simple bamboo arch the couple constructed themselves which
served as a backdrop, draped with offwhite sheer fabric. Looking back at the ceremony, they gush, “it all felt like a dream. It was emotional and funny and we really felt comfortable, considering the fact that we’re not much for standing in front of a crowd of people who are staring at us!” The bride wore a simple bohemian ivory dress by Australian designer

Eco-friendly invites Looking back, the pair consider the ceremony to be the best part of the day, with Steph remarking, “for me, that half hour, or however long it took, there was just Chris and myself. I don’t think I even noticed anyone except for him, standing there, waiting for me.” Chris remembers his part in proceedings fondly too, maintaining, “my ‘I
do’ came out very savage-like and everyone broke into fits. It’s definitely the thing I remember most vividly. That, and when our ring bearer (Steph’s brother’s dog) ran up to give us our rings.” The newlyweds are pleased to have achieved their dream of an unconventional wedding that reflected their beliefs. “Chris and I supported each other till the very end and it was all worth it – as was the praise we got afterwards from those who didn’t think it would all come together,” Steph maintains. The adventurous pair left for their honeymoon with a bang the week later, both shaving their heads for charity – yes, even Steph. “We went on a kayakcamping trip around the Maltese islands. Needless to say, a shaved head was much welcomed!” n
“The majority of the wedding invitations we sent out were via e-mail,” Steph maintains. “It actually took me a lot of time to create something I was happy with, but I was surprised with the great response. In fact, I have plans to set up a small family business after a lot of encouragement, and hopefully I can help more couples go down this cheap but personal and environmentally-friendly road.” For relatives without internet access, Steph made simple invitations using recycled brown paper, string, a leaf stamp made from a used wine cork, and a customisable self-inking stamp. The souvenirs were also hand-made: “we used small vials with cork tops which we filled with different seeds from my in-laws’ fields, and which people could actually plant.”
A home-made cake
“
“My ‘I do’ came out very savage-like and everyone broke into fits.
”
“The cake we cut was actually my mum’s bread-pudding (pudina) – a healthy, vegan version. We wanted something we both liked and my mum’s pudina is one of our favourite desserts. We also served chocolate cake and lemon cake prepared by our caterers,” Steph says.

adventures in

Theatre studies graduate and owner of Pastizzi Gourmet Marilù Vella and theatre producer and Valletta 2018 Deputy Artistic Director Sean Buhagiar share memories of their wonderful honeymoon in India with Sarah Micallef.
I
t was six months into their relationship when Sean Buhagiar and Marilù Vella first went on holiday together. Rather than an ‘easy’ European vacation however, they spent two weeks in Morocco – a sometimes trying experience which, Marilù maintains, sealed their relationship. “We’re both very fond of Morocco now, both because it’s a beautiful country and also because we have such nice memories there,” she says. Three years later, in the summer of 2014, the pair said their ‘I do’s, and it was time to plan their honeymoon. “India came up, and it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go. Sean is not as adventurous as I am, so when he suggested it, I immediately said yes,” Marilù chuckles. They went on to plan a whirlwind three weeks in India over Christmas and New Year, booking most of their accommodation “the night before we went”, and going on to cancel most of it. “We ended up cancelling because we came across different places and experiences. India is so vast, and there are so many things to do. You never know if you will have the opportunity to go back, so you really want to make the most of it, while not overdoing it.” Travelling quite a bit over their stay, the pair landed in Delhi, where they spent two days overcoming the substantial culture shock. “Delhi is a city of extremes – since we were on our

honeymoon we chose a really nice hotel, but just a two-minute drive away, you see kids walking around barefoot in the freezing cold. It makes you feel guilty,” Marilù says. The couple spent Christmas at the exceptional Lotus Temple in Delhi, which is a Bahá’í House of Worship. The temple is open to all regardless of religion, making it a gathering place where people of all religions may worship. “It was really nice to spend Christmas day in that atmosphere, with people from all walks of life,” they maintain. From Delhi, the honeymooners moved on to Chennai, on the south-eastern coast. Having both studied theatre, the major attraction there was a Bharatanatyam dance festival featuring Indian classical dance. It so happened that Mavin Khoo, the Artistic Director of national dance company ZfinMalta was there at the time, and invited them to his show. Ò

“Chennai is in Tamil Nadu, which is where Bharatanatyam originated. The show was set within a beautiful old school,” Marilù explains. They then moved on to the famed Goa, which is one of the world’s top places to enjoy New Year’s Eve. Choosing to stay away from the crowded parties in the north, the couple stayed at a resort in a fishing village in the south, where they rang in 2015 on the beach. “We had dinner on the sand and there were lots of people flying Chinese lanterns. At midnight, all the bars on the beach let off fireworks. It was beautiful,” Marilù says with a smile. A 20-hour bus ride later, the pair found themselves in the region of Kerala. After spending the night in Cochin, they moved on to Alleppey, a picturesque town rife with canals, backwaters, beaches, lagoons and houseboats. They stayed on one of the houseboats, which came with its own captain and chef: “We spent two nights on the second biggest lake in Asia, and there were moments when it was just us on the lake. Once, the captain stopped us at a place where we bought fresh tiger prawns which were as big as lobsters!” At one point, Marilù recalls, they caught sight of a group of eagles flying overhead. “One of them swooped down and grabbed a fish out of the water, right in front of us – it was such a National Geographic moment!” They went on to spend a few days at a yoga resort in Munnar, a town known for its extensive tea plantations. Referring to their time there as a total detox, they explain, “we used to wake up really early and have an hour and a half of yoga followed by breakfast. They served only vegetarian food, and the place was in the woods, so all you see is plants, flowers and trees.” The most adventurous part of their

trip followed, with three days and two nights in the jungle. Trekking alongside their group, Sean and Marilù witnessed some beautiful scenes, including baby elephants washing in a lake. Marilù looks back on an emotional moment, recalling, “Sean and I had woken up really early, while everyone was still sleeping. We watched the sunrise over the lake, and everything was so quiet – all we heard were birds and the roar of a tiger. At that moment we just thought, we are so lucky to be here.”
”
Their days in the jungle were followed by a stay in a treehouse in Thekkady, in the Kerala state of India. This was somewhat more comfortable than the jungle. “There were two really nice guys who stayed in a room near the treehouse and served us food and, very randomly, sang for us. It was a little more luxurious than staying in the jungle, where there were no toilets and showers, and you’re scared an elephant might come after you while you’re doing your business!,” Marilù laughs. Ò

Their Indian adventure came to an end with a day trip to Agra, where they witnessed the majestic Taj Mahal. “It is as stunning as everyone says it is. You
think you’re going to see just another monument, but it is truly amazing,” they enthuse. Part of what made their stay so memorable however, was the people. Marilù recalls a sweet exchange in Mamallapuram: “There was a group of women who were wearing these beautiful saris. They wanted to take photos with me, because we looked so different, so we took a photo, and then I asked them if I could take a photo with them. One of them just looked at me, touched my face and wobbled her head. I wanted to cry, it was such a nice moment.” Being foodies that “fell in love over the love of food”, I can’t help but ask what they made of the food in India, which is met with a rave review from Marilù. “The food is mostly vegetarian, but done in an interesting way. In the yoga resort in Munnar, I had a really good malai kofta, which I had never tasted before. We also ate well in the jungle, as everything was really fresh. Also, when we were in Delhi, we went to a restaurant that came very highly recommended called Karim’s. Getting there was difficult, we even had to rent a rickshaw, but it was
so good – I would go back just for that!” Asked to describe their honeymoon in three words, Marilù comes up with “memorable, exciting and adventurous,” explaining that it was important to them to achieve a balance of adventure and relaxation. “We wanted something exotic, and a new experience – a completely different culture. At first we had planned on doing two weeks of adventure and one week of relaxing, but there’s just so much to see! It was not a typical honeymoon, but it was just what we wanted.” n

Architects Lucienne and Matthew Cachia Caruana have spent years crafting the home of their dreams in Attard. Here, Jo Caruana goes behind the bright front door of this gorgeous property to discover the chic and comfortable family-centric space that lies beyond. P h oto s by a l a n c a rv i ll e

ithin seconds of walking across the threshold of Lucienne and Matthew Cachia Caruana’s pretty Attard home, I have fallen in love. “When can I move in?” I ask over and over again throughout our interview. Instantly it is clear that this home has been a labour of love for the couple, who bought it in 2009. “It was a complete coincidence,” Lucienne explains. “A friend of ours had come to view it but, in the interim, had bought a different house. Weeks later the price on this one was reduced and he suggested we come to see it. We’d actually stopped looking because we were, literally, about to move to London for a year; but we instantly recognised its potential and went for it. We signed the promise of sale one day, and moved abroad the next!” The couple were in London to complete their Masters in architecture; Lucienne in Environmental Engineering and Matthew in Structural Engineering. “It was a very busy year,” Matt says. “But we still found time to work on the house. Our time there inspired us a lot as we started to get all sorts of ideas for the interiors. Plus, we came up with plans for the structural conversions, which included building a passageway
between the bedrooms, changing the internal staircase and opening quite a few windows.” In hindsight they agree that London provided plenty of motivation for their future home. “We lived near Portobello Road and that whole area is buzzy with design ideas,” says Lucienne. “The shabby chic trend was emerging at the time and I started to collect items and ideas related to that, but I also liked the boho style that dominates the more ethnic part of that area too.” Looking around, there’s a definite combination of the two. The character of the house continues to evolve as we do.
”
Upstairs, the master bedroom is completely shabby chic – with light coloured wallpaper, white accessories and distressed wooden furniture. “I wanted to create a sense of calm,” says Lucienne. “The layout was already ideal, as the previous owner had created a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite bathroom, so it was just finishing touches that were needed in here.” Downstairs there was much more work to do. The large, rectangle-shaped living room is a definite focus, and it exudes the boho style that the couple like. “We were told this room was originally built around 300 years ago, so we wanted to highlight its history while blending it with more modern elements,” Matthew explains. “We have left the old walls exposed – which blends really well with the colour scheme we opted for. The sofa is brightly coloured in purple and orange hues, while other colourful elements are dotted around in the accessories. The original inspiration for this room came from the coffee table; it’s another of the pieces we picked up during out stay in London.” Another key feature is a brick fireplace, which Matthew and his brother built themselves. “There you go – another London element: brick!” they smile. “We ummed and ahhed over what to craft the fireplace out of, and considered concrete and local stone to begin with. “But, one day we were out in London and saw a brick fireplace and suddenly it was the perfect fit. Now it’s one of our preferred features.” However, of all the spaces here, Lucienne is adamant about
which are her absolute favourites. “The kitchen and dining room,” she beams, standing by the large oak table that regularly welcomes their large group of friends or family over for a meal. “I love to cook and entertain, so they mean the world to me.” The kitchen was a project that started way back when Lucienne was still at University. “I was touring showrooms and spotted that red Smeg fridge and really loved it. I knew I wanted to make it the focus of our future kitchen and never stopped thinking about it. It really inspired the retro style of this room, and we’ve utilised red in other details too. This room leads into the dining room, so it’s very convenient.” Ò

top tips Homeowners and architects Lucienne and Matthew share their tips for creating the perfect family home. Know what you want to get out of your house and which spaces you want to create. Your needs will differ if you only plan to live there for a while, or if you’re going to make this your long-term home. Create a space that is comfortable for you and what you want, don’t just be drawn to something because it looks good in a showroom or magazine. Budgeting is really important. When you’re working on a conversion it can be so easy to go overboard without even thinking about it, so be realistic about what you can achieve, and keep track. You don’t have to have a high budget to make a nice home. We did a lot of things ourselves so that helped, and it also created an aura that shows how much we love it. Like with so many things in life, you get out what you put in.
The courtyard, which is just beyond the kitchen, is also a space the couple make good use of. “We’re out here all the time as soon as the sun is out,” Matthew says. “It’s just the right size for entertaining, with a large table and a lounge area. We kept it bright and colourful, and outdoors really feels like an extension of indoors. We use it just as much!” Now, after years of changes, the house feels complete – especially thanks to another recent addition: little Amelia. “Our daughter came along in June
last year and, of course, she’s changed some aspects of the house too!” smiles Lucienne. “She made it her own – the living room has become her domain, and we’ve really enjoyed finishing her nursery. “So the character of the house continues to evolve as we do. We pick up paintings, change photos and find pieces of furniture we love. As architects, we love projects of this sort so we know we’ll never be ‘done’, but we do love the house as it is. It’s everything we’ve always wanted in our family home and a perfect reflection of all the things we enjoy.” n
Create a scrapbook to keep tabs on your ideas. Today Pinterest (an idea-sharing app) makes that really easy, but you could also cut things you like out of magazines and keep notes. It’s all about adapting other people’s ideas to create what you want.

Creative kitchens
Despite being one of the most used areas of any home, the kitchen need not be demoted to a purely functional space, and can boast as much flair and creativity as any other room in the home. Martina Said delves into the latest kitchen trends.

Coloured cabinets
It is understandable that we tend to opt for neutral colours when buying kitchen furniture – you want to avoid getting bored of something too bold and having to change everything a few years down the line. But that’s not to say that you can’t add a little colour to a part of your home that you wouldn’t expect, and creating contrasts through colour is a big trend this year. Paint your kitchen cabinets in a light or dark shade of a bold colour and you’ll instantly create a focal point in the room. Balance that out with lighter, neutral tones throughout the rest of the kitchen, and all the features in the room should come together in a visually appealing and modern fashion. s Kitchen by A Beautiful Mes

ry as you might to keep people out of and away from the kitchen when hosting a get together – to contain the party in the neatly done-up living or dining room – you’ll find that people always gravitate towards the kitchen. Perhaps it’s because they know they’ll find food there, but it’s also to do with the belief that the kitchen is the hub of a home, where people invariably feel comfortable and at ease, making it a great area for people to chat and mingle in a laid-back setting. This is why it is important that your kitchen receives the attention it deserves when you’re first setting it up, or refurbishing it. Your kitchen will be used and abused for years, so it’s important that anything from the cabinetry and appliances to the utensils and tools – especially the ones you know you’ll be using frequently – are of good and reliable quality, while looking great too. Here are some of the latest kitchen trends to take note of for a modern, upbeat and personalised kitchen that you will be proud of and impress your guests with.
Good lighting is paramount in every room, particularly in the kitchen, where you’ll benefit from having the option to light up different areas depending on what’s needed, such as through task lighting and overhead lighting. Lighting fixtures in an industrial style have been on trend for a few years now, and this year is no different. If you’re into this trend and wondering what elements qualify as ‘industrial looking’, look out for pieces in stainless steel, black steel, copper or brass, making use of industrial hardware such as rivets and wire caging instead of sconces. Efficient storage
www.tapja.com
Adequate storage space in the kitchen is as important as this room’s contents, and you should cater for that from the outset in order to avoid space issues later on. There is no better way to cater for efficient use of space than with a pantry, which will essentially keep all your kitchen items organised and accessible. Pull-out or tucked in pantry shelves and cupboards tend to be better options over an open pantry cabinet, which will inevitably collect dust faster than it would if it were closed. A pantry is excellent for filling with jars, bottles, cans, herbs, spices, packets and preserves, and seeing as everything is visually displayed in front of you, it eliminates kitchen stress in a heartbeat.
The island
Kitchen islands have the potential to be much more than simply a prepping or serving station. Look out for a statement island that complements the rest of your kitchen, but which potentially stands out as a statement by itself. Incorporate glass or mirror doors for island storage units instead of traditional cupboard doors, or clean up and refurbish an old piece of wood found at a flea market or home clearance sale and transform it into an island, adding lower shelving units for extra storage space. Top Tip
If you didn’t have a kitchen renovation in mind for your kitchen this year, but would like to treat it to a facelift, dedicate some time and energy into small upgrades which can go a long way in making it look more modern, visually appealing and in tune with your personal style. This could mean simply changing your cabinet knobs, or the colour of your cabinet doors.

They say the devil is in the detail, and your kitchen is no exception. The use of brass for kitchen items has made a comeback of late, although many might remember glinting brass utensils hanging around their childhood home. Shiny, brass décor can turn your kitchen into a classy and elegant space, with the use of brass accents through pendant light fixtures, cabinet knobs, handles and faucets. And if brass is too bright and shiny for your taste, toned down copper could be an equally appealing alternative. n

ith each invite received to a wedding or engagement, finding an appropriate and appreciated gift may seem like a daunting task. That is why having a gift list is the perfect solution where both the couple and the guests benefit. Mara Camilleri, gift-list expert at CAMILLERIPARISMODE explains that setting up a gift list “is considered a way to make gift-giving easier for guests. The main purpose is to allow your friends and family to help you build your future or existing home together.” With over ten years’ experience and hundreds of lists under her belt, Mara explains, “my main aim is making sure that everyone is happy – from the couple to the guests.” With a repertoire of many satisfied clients (the client testimonials on their website are proof of that) it is safe to say they are doing an excellent job. When creating a list, it is important to establish what you want and need together as a couple; you may be the type who enjoys a relaxed get-together or formal dinners and tea-parties – the list should reflect what you enjoy. “This is why at camilleriparismode we stock a wide range of tableware and accessories which are both beautiful and practical,” she explains, proudly holding a delicately patterned porcelain plate, “this is dishwasher safe, as well as being part of a stylish dinner set.” For couples who prefer a more casual look, she suggests another porcelain set that is safe to use in the freezer and oven along with the dishwasher and microwave. These sets may always be dressed up with table accents such as jewel-encrusted napkin rings, ornate cruet sets and colourful placemats. Mara goes on to explain, “couples who live together before marriage or couples on their second marriage should not be put off from creating a gift-list as wedding presents serve as special reminders of the wedding which will be treasured forever.”
Of course, aside from facilitating guests, a gift-list will prevent the chances of a couple ending up with four different sets of glasses, mismatching serving dishes and no pots and pans. That is why CAMILLERIPARISMODE provide a wide range of products ranging from tableware, glassware, crystal, cutlery and kitchen utensils as well as home accessories such as lamps, throws, rugs, vases, bedding and towelling, and decorative items. Mara explains, “we treat each gift-list as unique, with each one being individually displayed at either our Sliema or Rabat shops as well as being placed online with a password to protect the couple’s privacy. Our gift-list team loves creating creative table displays along with the other pieces chosen that make it a pleasure for the guests to choose a gift.” Upon booking your gift list, you will be entitled to several financial benefits through credit schemes, which are always useful especially for couples who are starting out. The first step is making an appointment with one of the experienced gift-list team members who can guide you through the process and help you set up the list that is right for you. Laughter
Over 50 years since they met at a masked ball, Marylu and Marco Coppini still have plenty to joke about. They take Jo Caruana on a trip down memory lane, to their wedding day.
W
henever I think of Marylu Coppini, I think of laughter. She is a renowned actress famed for her comic roles, but she’s also a laugh-a-minute off stage – and I have fond memories of time spent with her and her husband Marco; the pair always seem to be guffawing about something. The couple met in the 60s, back when Marylu was just 15; theirs was a chance encounter on the Sliema promenade. “I didn’t quite fit in ‘on the front’ at the time, because most of my school friends hadn’t been allowed out yet. I lived nearby and had already lost both parents, so it was much easier for me to sneak out! Anyway, it didn’t bother me that Marco wasn’t a boy from my usual group. I think it bothered his group a bit that I had nabbed one of their boys but there you go… Romeo and Juliet all over again!” Some time later, the couple set their date for 23 September 1973. Marylu was her own wedding planner. “We opted for a small wedding of around 250 guests for a sit-down buffet lunch, which wasn’t very common in those days.” As ready-to-wear wedding dresses weren’t available in the 70s, Marylu’s was made for her. “I loved to design all
of my clothes and I did the same with my wedding dress. It was then made by a lovely dressmaker in Mosta and, when I finally tried it on, it looked perfect!” Meanwhile, Marco and the ushers wore the ‘new fashion’ of grey tailcoats as it was a morning wedding while Marylu’s late brother, Kit Ripard, who gave her away, looked smart in traditional black tails and charcoal grey trousers. “My four bridesmaids (Marco’s sisters and my nieces) wore cream coloured chiffon dresses with tiny pistachio spots and trimmings – it was all terribly stylish, I thought,” says Marylu with a grin.
The ceremony took place at the Burmarrad Church, followed by a reception at the Mellieha Bay Hotel. “Our guests were thrilled by the novelty of being able to sit and eat in comfort and, apparently, they stayed on to enjoy the view of Ghadira long after our ‘going away’!” Asked for her highlights of the day, Marylu says that, as a ‘born romantic’ it was wonderful walking down the aisle to meet her fiancé at the altar. “But I think the memory that sticks out most is the unexpected quirkiness of the cake! I had insisted on sampling the mixture before the wedding but hadn’t given a thought to the decoration. It turned out to be very original because it had red roses and white swans everywhere and, last but not least, a fullyfunctional miniature fountain lit with a tiny blue neon light happily playing between its lower tiers! At first we were stunned, but then we all laughed and laughed. I still have those little plastic roses.” Looking back, there’s only one thing that Marylu would change about her and Marco’s big day, and that would be the month they married in. “September was so hot and humid; I think we look pretty sweaty in most of the photos!” As for Marco, he chimes in with a ‘modern trend’ he’d like to incorporate: “divorce applications,” he quips. “Nice guy, huh?” retorts Marylu with a grin. But, cheeky jokes apart, it is clear that this couple certainly made the right decision back on that September day over 40 years ago. “Marriage? Oh it’s great… as long as you can put up with it!” Marylu laughs. n
