LOVE

To many, April 2014 might bear little to no significance. For the islands’ gay community, however, it means the world. Martina Said discusses the Civil Unions Act and its implications with Dr Carla Camilleri of Aditus, and chats to two same-sex couples who have recently tied the knot, to find out what it means to them, and how their lives have changed since.

T

hey say love knows no bounds, and what better way to honour such love than with the seal of marriage? Until recently, however, such a commitment was only possible for couples composed of a man and a woman, essentially alienating couples, including those in long, loving and committed relationships, made up of two men or two women. All this changed when a Civil Unions Bill was approved by parliament in April 2014, which granted same-sex couples the same rights and obligations as heterosexual couples, without calling it ‘marriage’. From April 2014 until October this year, according to statistics obtained from the Public Registry, 70 Maltese and five Gozitan couples applied to enter a civil union. Of these, 56 Maltese and five Gozitan couples participated in a ceremony to celebrate their civil union, and were registered accordingly. Dr Carla Camilleri, assistant director at Aditus – a human rights NonGovernmental Organisation – explains that, before the Civil Unions Act, there

were no laws that recognised or regulated the relationship between same-sex couples. With the passing of the Act, formal civil unions and the formalisation of the relationship between persons of the same sex were made possible. “The importance of legislating civil unions, besides the state’s recognition of the right to marry for persons of the same sex, was to remove the discrimination that existed between heterosexual couples that were married and persons that were in a same-sex relationship, such as the legal limbo same-sex couples and their children faced,” says Dr Camilleri. In a marriage between heterosexual couples, a long list of very important rights and obligations is triggered once the couple sign the marriage contract. “With the introduction of the Civil Unions Act, the same was made possible for couples entering a civil union, therefore granting automatic rights and obligations to couples and their children. These rights range across the board and include property rights, pension rights and

employment rights, among others.” And so, it begs the question: is a civil union equivalent to marriage? Dr Camilleri helps clear things up, explaining that “the Civil Unions Act specifically states that a civil union shall have the corresponding effects and consequences in law of civil marriage where applicable. In effect, the law is the closest to marriage as it can get without it being called marriage, although our ultimate aim would be marriage equality also in name, and not just in effect.” Meanwhile, however, several couples lost no time in accomplishing a dream that they were previously unsure they would be able to fulfil in their lifetime. Without further ado, here are the stories of two couples who recently tied the knot, and raised their champagne glasses to ‘happily ever after’. Ò

“S

teve and I met 18 years ago at a fitness lesson,” says Emmanuel, TV chef, presenter and co-director of Aceline Entertainment. “I hadn’t been in Malta long, and after unexpectedly crossing paths three times in that same week, we figured it was meant to be!” The pair travelled to Paris in February 2014 for some quality time – after Steve, also co-director of Aceline Entertainment, suffered a health scare and ahead of Emmanuel’s birthday. “I booked lunch at the Michelin-starred Jules Verne restaurant and proposed to him. It was a very emotional time for us, and although the Civil Unions Bill hadn’t been passed then, I knew it was only a matter of time.” Shortly after returning to Malta, Emmanuel began looking for a venue. “We wanted to keep things small and share our day with the special people in our lives. the ceremony, the central courtyard for the formal dinner and one of the rooms for the cake table.” Emmanuel took care of all preparations, while keeping Steve up to date with everything. They opted for a vintage theme, which complemented the palazzo’s baroque style, and limited the event to 50 guests. The pair’s civil union took place on 5th September 2014, and both the run-up to the big day as well as the day itself were as exciting as they could have hoped. “From the day I proposed and we knew that we were going to make things official, we were both on cloud nine. I can’t explain the feeling, I suppose you have to go through it to understand, but it felt like the ultimate state of happiness,” says Emmanuel. “The introduction of civil unions changed our lives completely – the commitment between us was there, but this just ties everything together and gives us a feeling of security. We are an equal couple as any other, and recognised as such. Before, even after 16 years, Steve was just my partner. Now, he is officially recognised as my husband.” Ò

A

one-time virtual chat between Christian, a research and programme officer at the International Institute on Ageing, and Clayton, a manager in investment promotion at Malta Enterprise, quickly revealed that the two had lots in common. It wasn’t until a year later, however, when Christian returned to Malta after a year-long internship in the UK, that they bumped into each other at a party. “Within weeks, we knew that what we had was real and we decided to introduce one another to our respective families,” they explain. “A year later, we decided to test our relationship and move in together, and just over a year after the introduction of the Civil Unions Act– and six-and-a-half years into our relationship – we decided

to take it a step further and announce our plans to make our relationship official.” Preparations for the ceremony and reception were contained and relatively straightforward. “We didn’t need a two-year countdown like most couples. Once we set the date, 26th June 2015, we booked the venue that we really wanted, Xara Palace in Mdina, an area that we frequented often in the early years of our relationship. The rest seemed to fall into place. We opted for classic suits from the latest Vintage Collection at The Groom, which perfectly captured the timeless theme we were after.” Since their civil union, Christian and Clayton admit that

There is need for further awareness – to spread the word that gay couples can live in harmony like all other couples.

their lives haven’t really changed, merely returned to reality, but they still consider the introduction of the Civil Unions Act to be a huge, positive step forward in recognising the gay identity, and – apart from making their relationship official – in providing a sense of security through the rights specified in the Act. “Should something happen to one of us, the other is seen as family, and not as a stranger, or simply a friend. Most importantly, however, is that couples who entered a civil union are now on equal ground with married heterosexual couples – it is as simple as enabling a couple to enjoy equal citizenship rights.” Christian and Clayton conclude that not all couples feel confident to take the next step like they did, even if they are in a long, stable relationship, because they lack the family support that they need and seek. “It goes to show that there is need for further awareness – to spread the word that gay couples can live in harmony like all other couples,”… and all in the name of love. n

Of love, joy and laughter

Just over a year since exchanging ‘I dos’, lovebirds Bianca and Joe Caruana Curran, who recently welcomed a precious son into the world, tell Martina Said about their picture-perfect wedding day, complete with a few unexpected hiccups, spontaneous celebrations and lots of fun. P h otos by B en C amille

I

t’s a sticky summer day, and I agree to meet Bianca Caruana Curran, manager at Alfie’s, at her second home. It’s mid-morning, and the salon is quiet at this hour with only a few regular clients and colleagues around, which makes it impossible not to notice just how loved and respected she is. Everyone stops to greet her, wish her good morning, or ask how she’s dong. This same attitude, her sister Francesca tells me, was echoed by everyone who helped Bianca and her husband Joe with preparations for their wedding day on 20th September, 2014. “Everyone wanted the best for her,” says Francesca, “so they went the extra mile to make the day as special as possible.” Bianca and Joe, manager and coowner of a Remax franchise, first crossed paths eight years ago, at a football club in Gharghur. “I didn’t think anything would come of it,” admits Bianca, “but then I got to know him and discovered how funny and charming he is. He won me over.” Talk of wedding preparations between the two began to surface around five years into their relationship, and after seven years of dating, they tied the knot. Despite this, Joe’s proposal to Bianca came as a total surprise to her one night in October 2013. “The two of us went out for dinner at a romantic restaurant in Mdina, and although I had a slight inkling because he was acting strangely the night before, I was shocked when I saw him get down on one knee. I later discovered he was actually quite nervous,” she laughs. With 11 months to plan their wedding, Bianca and Joe roped in the help of close friend and respected wedding planner Sarah Young. “She’s a good friend of mine and I work with her a lot, but I only understood her capability when she was my wedding planner. Since Joe and I both have hectic jobs, she made life a lot easier by setting appointments and giving us regular advice, as well as solving last-minute problems that cropped up on the day.” Ò

Indeed, last-minute problems did crop up. The wedding unexpectedly coincided with Prince William’s visit to Malta for last year’s Independence celebrations. Bianca explains that the plan was to get married at Santa Katarina church in Valletta, followed by a stopover at the Upper Barrakka Gardens for photos, after which they would proceed to the reception venue in Naxxar. “It had all been planned for months, but we found out about the prince’s visit less than two months before the wedding. We needed to get special permits for the cars, organise transport for some of the guests due to parking issues and had to keep it brief at the Upper Barrakka because a function was taking place that same day.” She adds that her wedding planner, together with Veronica Zammit Tabona of Villa Arrigo, were of invaluable help on the day, and remained tight-lipped about it all, even though they were at the salon

in Bianca’s company getting their hair done that same morning. “They didn’t reveal a single thing to me, and kept me calm throughout it all.” The couple chose to keep their wedding décor classical and romantic. “Joe and I are both quite traditional and wanted a white wedding. We only had a touch of light pink in the flowers, which matched my bridesmaids’ pale pink dresses. We agreed on most things,” she smiles. “He stuck with his areas of expertise, such as the suits and bars, and also handled the music and cars, which we got from John’s Garage.” Bianca recalls being in awe of how beautiful certain aspects of the wedding turned out on the day. Ò

The ceremony was the best part of the day in my eyes – it was all very personal and I could say that it was fun marrying my husband.

Pretty in pink “Upon entering the church, for instance, I was overjoyed at the sight of the beautiful flower arrangements – the florist, Bjorn at Floreal, truly outdid himself. We were also delighted with the venue and catering, Villa Arrigo and Osborne Caterers – to this day, we still get people telling us how great the food was, and the organisation was superb.” Bianca fondly remembers being very calm on her wedding day. The bride-to-be and her bridal party got their hair and make-up done at Alfie’s Hair & Beauty Salon, and her team went all out to make the day a special and memorable one. “We didn’t take clients that day, besides

those that were coming to the wedding – the team decorated the salon with flowers, balloons and prepared some sandwiches, and they did a great job of getting everyone ready.” The groom, who was also quite calm, met up with his groomsmen for a drink close to the church before the ceremony was due to start, the same church his grandparents got married in decades earlier. “After the mass, in a piazza outside the church, my motherin-law surprised us with a spontaneous celebration, complete with a saxophone player and champagne for the guests,” says Bianca. Ò

Bianca’s bridal party – five bridesmaids and one flower girl, were dressed in a soft, feminine shade of pink, which matched the touch of pink in the bride’s bouquet of flowers.

Non-stop entertainment

“Everyone we wanted to have perform at our wedding, we got: from Ira Losco for the mass, Mark Rapa, Sandrina and Keith (members of Skarlet), Pete, Papps & Gianni and Ivan of Wintermoods, to Ziggy for the after-party, topped off with the surprise performance by saxophonist Sammy Murgo outside the church,” says Bianca.

Joe and I are both quite traditional and wanted a white wedding.

28 bliss NOVEMBER 2015 § Real Wedding

“The ceremony was the best part of the day in my eyes – it was all very personal and I could honestly say that it was fun marrying my husband.” Bianca’s look on the day complemented her approach towards the entire wedding – humble and elegant. Her dress, which she bought – along with her shoes, headdress and veil – from Camilleri Paris Mode, was entirely

different to what she was initially after. “I went shopping for a dress with a particular designer in mind, but the dresses I tried on didn’t look as good as I had hoped. I settled on a beautiful dress, which I fell in love with instantly. It had lace and beading, and was fitted on top and flared on the bottom.” The newlyweds shared their first dance to U2’s One, performed by Pete, Papps & Gianni. “The dance went quite smoothly overall, we probably both expected it to be worse, so to speak! People started to join us half way through, and that certainly helped.” The

couple cut the cake swiftly after, so that they, together with the bridal party and the groomsmen could relax and make way for the proper fun to start. “One thing I would suggest to future brides and grooms is to really enjoy the day, because it passes by so quickly,” says Bianca, “as well as surrounding yourself with people who are genuinely happy for you both as a couple. All along, Joe and I wanted to keep the wedding small and intimate. We wanted to be surrounded by people we know and love, which is why I think we had such a beautiful and positive vibe on our wedding day.” n

More than words

As they celebrate their first anniversary, Adrian and Anthea Huber relive their special day with Sarah Micallef, revealing how they achieved the simple and sophisticated affair of their dreams.

his love story starts in 2007, when Adrian Huber, who works as a programmes manager at Inspire Foundation, was living in the UK. That summer, he met Anthea, a design architect at Archi+ while on holiday in Malta. ‘Was it love at first sight?’ I ask. “All we can say is that three months down the line, he was packing his bags and moved back to Malta,” smiles Anthea. In fact, the couple knew they wanted to get married very early on, though it wasn’t until some years later that Adrian

slipped a beautiful engagement ring under Anthea’s pillow. “I found it there one Sunday morning! It was simple but perfect,” she recalls affectionately. Like most little girls, Anthea maintains that she always dreamt of getting married, and in a way, so did Adrian. “I first dreamt that I would get married at a very young age, when I met my kindergarten teacher,” he laughs. After getting engaged, the wedding preparations, which the couple shared with a little help from the mother of the

bride, began in earnest. Admitting that it did get stressful in the last few weeks, Anthea jokes, “Adrian was quite the bridezilla, especially on the wedding day!” The pair were after a simple and classy feel for their wedding, which Anthea describes as “an elevated country vintage style”, and this was reflected in their choice of venue. The idea was to find “a place that had character yet was not the common pick,” and this is precisely what the Grand Ballroom at the Phoenicia delivered. Ò

32 bliss NOVEMBER 2015 § Real Wedding

Adrian was quite the bridezilla, especially on the wedding day.

Above all however, what they wanted most out of their wedding was to celebrate their special day accompanied by their favourite people under one roof. Adrian meanwhile, mostly wanted his groomsmen to turn up on time, at the right place. “Which they did, but to compensate, two of them turned up without their shoes,” they laugh. While agreeing on most things

throughout the process, including not engaging a wedding planner, Anthea jibes, “it did take until the day before the wedding to convince Adrian that we would have enough food!” Still, the couple were adamant about planning all the details themselves, but admit that the one thing that was quite difficult was making sure that everything went well during the reception on the day itself. Ò

Keeping it classy

ÔAn air of simple elegance ran through the wedding décor, from the classy flower arrangements by Qronfla to the invites which were designed by the bride and even the choice of souvenirs: home-made matchboxes.

Unconventional yet conservative

ÓAnthea and Adrian designed their own wedding cake, which was made up of three tiers and decorated with icing in an elegant brushstroke style and garnished with fresh flowers. “It was brilliantly executed by the chef,” they say.

“You’re busy shaking hands, kissing cheeks and being married in general. However, it wasn’t an issue as everything was being meticulously supervised by the team at the Phoenicia, as well as our superb bridal team.” The couple chose 25th October 2014 as the date of their wedding, mostly to avoid the summer heat, though they were delighted that it also happened to be the last Saturday before changing to winter time – so their guests were lucky enough to get an extra hour of sleep (or partying) that night. When the big day arrived, Anthea woke up feeling excited yet calm, and went on to have a great time with her girls, getting pampered and having some bubbly before the ceremony. Adrian meanwhile looks confused. Ò

Real Wedding § NOVEMBER 2015 bliss 37

It took until the day before the wedding to convince Adrian that we would have enough food!

“Woke up? That would imply that I actually slept!” he laughs. Still, that’s not to say that Anthea was immune to the big day jitters altogether, admitting to feeling a few butterflies as she got to the Attard parish church, where the ceremony was being held. “The only time I got nervous was once we got to the church. My nerves settled down once I saw Adrian though. I put on my blinkers and just focused on him.”

The bride walked down the aisle in a simple, contemporary dress with vintage detailing from Wedding Bells, albeit admitting that she always imagined choosing a lace dress. “I tried a few lace dresses and they didn’t really do it for me,” she recalls, “they felt too serious and ‘old’. This just struck a balance and when I found it, I knew I wouldn’t like anything more than I liked it.” The pair describe the ceremony itself as “an intense, long-awaited special moment.” Anthea reflects on the fact that when people think of a wedding, they mostly think of the wedding reception, but believes that you should never underestimate how powerful and meaningful the ceremony itself is. “It’s a pretty big deal to promise to stick Ò

with someone through thick and thin no matter what; and we both take this promise very seriously,” she says. The couple went on to party the night away, accompanied by 300 guests at their reception. They affectionately recall their first dance to the song ‘More Than Words’ – “it’s always been our song, and brings back memories of singing loudly and out of tune after a few glasses of wine when we first met,” they smile. Looking back on their special day, the pair narrow down two favourite parts: the ceremony, which was a long-awaited moment, and the dancing – “we let loose and really had a ball of a time.” As with any celebration, there were also bound to be some funny moments. “Apart from the groomsmen forgetting their shoes, a massive wasp decided to climb through one of the layers of my dress on our way to the reception,” Anthea reveals. “It was caught with extreme panache by a member of the Phoenicia team though!” n

he furniture in Ivan and Charlene’s home, where I meet them to talk about their wedding day, can be divided into two categories. The first variety is solid, practical and perfectly tailored. The second looks like it belongs in an alternate reality where abstract artist Piet Mondrian decided to pick up a wood saw instead of a paintbrush. They made most of it themselves. This turns out to be a fairly solid metaphor to describe their wedding day – practical, artistic and made for them, by them. Their history runs so deep that when I ask how they met, they exchange slightly baffled looks, as if there had never been a time when they didn’t know each other. This is almost true. “We’ve known each other for ages, and we had always fancied each other,” says Charlene, 32, an impossibly petite art restorer and one half of the fashion designer duo CreativeFactory7. “We dated on and off for about seven years and then we decided to

get serious after I gave him an ultimatum.” “No you didn’t,” Ivan protests. Ivan, 35, works in video and animation, and looks a bit like a friendly Viking. “Fine,” Charlene shoots back, “but your mum was really happy I finally took you off the market.” Ivan’s grateful mum was among the 40 guests who made up the wedding party when Charlene and Ivan finally exchanged vows on 18th July of this year. The wedding, like the proposal a mere three months earlier – “hey, we’re really in love and have been together forever… do you want to get married sometime?” “Sure!” – was planned as small and low-key from the beginning. “We wanted to have a wedding strictly for our immediate family and our very close friends. “It’s really hard to keep a wedding party small because there’s always the fear that you’re hurting someone’s feelings. But at the same time, we decided to draw the line and stick to it,” says Charlene. The civil ceremony took place in Rabat’s Palazzo Castelletti, a magnificent palace originally built to house a family of 17th-century aristocrats. Charlene designed and made her own wedding dress, and sewed appliqué flowers in pink, purple, orange and green on the shoulders and back. “I went for a minidress. I’m a small person and I didn’t want the dress to end up wearing me.” She also made her own headpiece. Ivan wore a smart Gagliardi suit in dark blue with a

It was the celebration of a love that had been going strong for years, so Charlene had a number of Polaroids of their favourite couple moments throughout the ages printed and displayed on the wedding cake table.

Child’s play Nature’s best

The secluded, forest-like area of Masgar provided inspiration for Charlene and Ivan’s hand-made invitations, as well as the cake, which featured tree branches, leaves and flowers. Besides the handbeaded and sewn flowers on her dress and headpiece, Charlene gave 30 jars an acrylic paint makeover and used them to display the floral arrangements.

black contrast collar over a crisp white shirt. Instead of exchanging vows, their witnesses – Charlene’s sister and Ivan’s nephew – took the stage and shared their favourite memories of the couple. “My sister is older than me, so she talked about how she had always wanted a sister when she was younger, and how happy she had been when I was born,” says Charlene. “My nephew is 18 and the fond memory he chose to share involved me dressing up in a Halloween mask years ago and giving the little cousins a fright. Everyone found it hilarious,” adds Ivan.

Ivan has a lot of young nieces and nephews, so the couple made sure they were entertained by preparing colouring books and props for them to play with on the day.

After the ceremony, the wedding party headed to Masgar, a woodsy, privatelyowned piece of land in Mtarfa which has often played host to bands including Brikkuni and Tribali. Charlene, Ivan and their friends had spent most of the previous day setting it up, armed with fairy lights, balloons, miles of tulle and ribbons, and a disco ball Ivan bought on eBay, which he seems especially proud of. The owner of Masgar gave them free rein for the entirety of the day and a significant part of the night, so the music kept playing and the drinks, supplied by Antonio Piscopo Wines & Spirits, kept flowing. “I loved that there wasn’t this curfew hanging over our heads like you’d get at a regular venue,” says Charlene. “We were free to keep dancing until three in the morning – which we did! Everyone tells you to cherish the day because it goes so fast, and it’s true – time passed as if we were in a dream. I couldn’t stop smiling for a second.” The party ended in the wee hours of the night, after the men had turned the dancefloor into an enthusiastically sweaty Prodigy gig. They rounded it off by taking a trip to Serkin for tea and pastizzi. Although the whole day was idyllic, both Charlene and Ivan agree that these are the moments they’ll treasure most – the blearily euphoric moments that photos and videos failed to capture; the ones that only exist in memory.

While Charlene and Ivan are both really keen to talk about their day, it is Ivan who ends up bringing out the wedding video. Not without a sense of irony, he notes that he was originally not a fan of weddings. “They always seemed to be big, showy corporate events… far too commercial for my tastes. I didn’t really want to have anything to do with that sort of thing. Today I think of them differently. They are an outlet through which you can express your creativity and personality, a chance to unite friends and family and have a great time.” In the wedding video, the scattered light bouncing off Ivan’s famous disco ball is reflected in the eyes and smiles of the party guests, young and old. And true enough, all of them seem to be having the time of their lives. n

Malta’s iconic luxury hotel

We all yearn for a little luxury. Especially on the most special day of our lives. At the classic Hotel Phoenicia you could live in a fivestar bubble permanently.

M

ost Maltese know the Phoenicia by reputation. The name itself conjures up images of old world elegance, of ladies who lunch and a bygone era when class and distinction were of upmost importance. Certainly when Hotel Phoenicia was first built in 1939 it embodied all these things and more. It was the destination for Malta’s socialites and the hotel of choice for dignitaries and celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince Consort, Alec Guinness, Gerard Depardieu, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Joaquim Phoenix, Arnold Schwarznegger, Andrew Morton and Patti Smith, to name just a few, and has been the hotel of choice for some of the most important and famous visitors to Malta for almost seven decades. The Phoenicia is most famous for its

sumptuous weddings. Imagine buckets of champagne and a tiered cake to tempt even the most selective sweet tooth. Given its impeccable credentials, the Phoenicia creates a warm atmosphere that will set the right tone before you even walk in. This venue is outstanding with 7.5 acres of lush gardens, a poolside setting and a grand ballroom all in one space. The five-star venue maintains its elegant reputation and takes its guests on a journey back in time. Heritage listed, the Phoenicia is like a real-life time capsule. If the walls could talk, they would whisper secrets of luxury and love; of gracious weddings and the type of romance that comes with wealth and status, and occurs safely behind closed doors.

Given its impeccable credentials, the Phoenicia creates a warm atmosphere that will set the right tone before you even walk in.

Hotel Phoenicia was Malta’s first five-star hotel, giving it a wealth of history and a unique charm, standing proudly at the gates to Valletta. An imposing art deco influence and some truly majestic panoramic views combine with the stunning gardens, perfect for a summer wedding. The retro mood and styling here are just perfect. There are some modern touches of course, and the Phoenicia’s own wedding planner Chrystelle Doublesin is always on-hand to help with all the wedding arrangements. Customised menus compiled by an award-winning brigade of chefs are tasted with the couple ahead of their big day. Having helped so many couples over the years, practice makes perfect. There is a repeat element throughout this hotel’s distinguished history: time. Time brings couples together, and it is sometimes a long period before they finally tie the knot, in true Maltese fashion. A bride’s grandmother or grandparents may have married at the Phoenicia and to keep the family tradition alive, today’s bride and groom choose the same path – and who knows? It may be passed on to the generations to come. Hotel Phoenicia is also home to the Inspirations wedding fair which this year celebrated its 10th anniversary. The fare takes place every spring with over 40 exhibitors – from wedding services, car rental and honeymoon packages to pre-nuptial events, home furnishings, photographers and entertainment services – all under one roof, in the magnificent Grand Ballroom. Discovering the wonders of

Vietnam

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Vietnam? Probably nothing much – and that’s something Pamela Schembri and Manuel Cassar are determined to change now that they’ve experienced the country first-hand. They tell Marie-Claire Grima all about drinking snake wine, boating in bamboo baskets and swimming in a world-famous heritage site during their honeymoon in this underrated Asian gem.

“S

ome people in Malta are still under the impression that there’s a war going on in Vietnam,” says Pamela Schembri. “When we announced that we were going there on our honeymoon, we were greeted by shocked expressions and questions like ‘Vietnam? Isn’t that dangerous? What on earth is there to do in Vietnam?’” Pamela, 36, a communications coordinator at a parliamentary secretariat, and Manuel, 36, a project manager at the Malta Football Association, are both avid travellers, but they had never been to Asia. After weighing up different potential honeymoon destinations, they were drawn to the idea of experiencing something completely different, and booked an Intrepid Tour through the Cruise & Travel Group, which would take them all the way through Vietnam. They rounded off their honeymoon with four days in Thailand. Four days after their wedding last April, they embarked on their honeymoon adventure and after a 21-hour journey, they finally landed in Ho Chi Minh City, the nation’s largest metropolis, formerly known as Saigon. And they quickly realised that actually, there’s a lot to do in Vietnam. Having always travelled on their own, Pamela and Manuel were uncertain about whether travelling with a group was right for them. However, they quickly made friends with the members of their cohort, which included Australians, Canadians, Indians and New Zealanders, and found that experiencing a new

continent with other people who were going through the same thing was very rewarding. “Almost everyone was older than us, but they all had such an open mind, and never shied away from anything. We all got along really well, and we’ve kept in touch with many of them. Besides, being in a group led by a local guide also encouraged us to try out things we might have skipped over if we were on our own.” Ò

Snake wine made me shudder, but I always tried to make myself step out of my comfort zone during this trip.

An open mind is a useful thing to have when encountering Vietnam’s plentiful street food vendors, including those at the famous Hoi An market. Pamela and Manuel tried as many of the local delicacies as they could, from white rose dumplings to monkey brains and giant pork-filled snails, to duck tongues and enormous crabs. The most peculiar one was Vietnamese snake wine – a traditional alcoholic beverage made by infusing an entire snake in wine and leaving it to ferment. “It made me shudder, but I always tried to make myself step out of my comfort zone during this trip,” says Pamela. “I mean, when are you ever going to do something like this again?” In Mekong, the group experienced local life by forgoing hotels in favour of spending the night in a homestay, where they made their own food using fresh local ingredients bought from the fascinating floating markets. Nha Trang’s never-ending stretches of beaches provided the perfect location for walking, biking and snorkelling, as well as the opportunity to travel to Mieu Island in a woven basket made out of bamboo, piloted by an elderly lady. In Hue, they felt the echoes of history as they walked through the walled city which was once the exclusive domain of Imperial Vietnam’s royal family, and they also enjoyed a water puppet performance in Hanoi, Vietnam’s glamorous capital city. The pictures don’t even do justice to the beauty of Halong Bay. It’s one of those places which you simply have to see in person.

However, they both agree that the highlight of the trip was Halong Bay – a UNESCO world heritage site. They arrived after an overnight trip on a boat, and awoke to see the bay’s magnificent karst formations rising out of the water. The bay was the perfect spot to do some kayaking, explore the marine caves, and get a closer look at the monkeys. “The pictures don’t even do justice to the beauty of Halong Bay,” says Manuel, “It’s one of those places which you simply have to see in person.” The couple’s honeymoon coincided with the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. An excursion to the War Remnants Museum and the incredibly claustrophobic Cu Chi tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City where civilians used to take shelter from American bombs during the

conflict left them both speechless. “The Vietnamese are an incredible people. They’ve been through so much, and you can still see the after-effects of the devastation that the war brought, but they’re so resilient and hardworking. Their determination and work ethic is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. There’s an incredibly low unemployment rate in Vietnam because they make the most out of everything they have. They’re absolute survivors and so is their country.” For the last leg of their journey, Pamela and Manuel hopped on a plane to neighbouring Thailand and spent four days mellowing out in Phuket and its nearby archipelago – the Phi Phi and Bamboo Islands. “It was a more traditional sort of destination,” says Manuel. Look your best on your

Wedding day

In my 20 years’ of experience working in the wonderful world of wedding makeup, I have witnessed a lot of change in what we term ‘professional makeup application’. Products change constantly and photo and video equipment is always being updated. Our job as professionals is to move in tandem with these developments. Nowadays in fact it’s not

just TV, but also wedding videography that’s in HD. This in turn means that I have to apply HD makeup. HD makeup is different from ‘normal’ makeup particularly in the way it has to be applied. But it certainly has benefits... apart from its perfect coverage and contouring, the makeup stays on for more than 30 hours, which is perfect for our humid climate. Weddings will always be my area of specialisation. Your wedding at Valletta Waterfront

Located close to central Valletta, Valletta Waterfront offers the perfect backdrop for your wedding with flexible indoor and outdoor options. Eighteenth-century warehouses with their iconic coloured doors stretch along the water’s edge against a backdrop of historic fortifications and venues.

Under the Marquee: Located on the Valletta Waterfront quays, the marquee offers protective cover for up to 1,400 persons in a uniquely magical location. The Sagrestia Vault: Located directly on the Valletta Waterfront is a hidden treasure unknown to most – the Sagrestia Vault. Annexed to the 17th-century vault, is a small but beautifully detailed chapel dedicated to the Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. In combination with the Sagrestia Vault, the Chapel can be utilised as a receiving area. It is truly a little gem on the Valletta Waterfront. Magazino Hall: Renowned for its versatility, Magazino

proudly displays its historical features from a glorious past. Built in 1727 to store oil for street lamps, it was later incorporated in the island’s first power station. Once inside, there is an impressive arched ceiling and the golden limestone glistens with the cast of soft lighting. An adjoining outdoor courtyard nestled among the historic bastions can be used as a breakout area or as a stand-alone venue. Magazino can comfortably accommodate 400 persons.

Old Power House: The original building came about

during the construction of Floriana’s fortifications in the 1700s. This building has taken many turns in history, before being transformed and operating as Malta’s first electricity production plant. This building offers a fascinating layering of spaces and reflects the multiplicity of activities forming part of Malta’s Grand Harbour over the centuries. The rustic structure with high ceilings displays an interesting contrast between the old and the new.

Under the Stars: The possibilities are endless – the openair venue is an artistic blank canvas with the Grand Harbour as a backdrop on one side and the Valletta Waterfront buildings on the other. The location is breath-taking and lends itself to the typical Mediterranean al fresco lifestyle.

The Promenade: A 275-metre strolling promenade offers the perfect staging with a variety of outlets, also with a private area, for more intimate weddings. Civil wedding ceremonies can be officiated in Magazino Hall, and also on the quays. Meanwhile religious weddings can be celebrated in the Chapel on the Valletta Waterfront. A labour of love

Jean and Emma are true converts to country living, thanks to their beautifully converted farmhouse in the small village of Benghajsa, which they share with their gorgeous two-year-old Doberman, June. They tell Sarah Micallef all about their home’s journey, in Emma’s own terms, ‘from crumbs to completion’. p h oto s by a l a n c a rv i ll e

L

ocated just a few metres away from the archaeological site of Ghar Hasan, project manager Jean and lawyer Emma’s newly converted farmhouse is surrounded by fields and blessed with an air of peace and privacy, while still being within easy reach of Birzebbugia, a mere two-minute drive away. The couple moved in exactly a year ago, but have known about the house since 2010, when they saw it for the first time. Back then, the pair weren’t looking to buy, but the house remained in their minds until 2012, when they eventually convinced their families (and each other) that it was the perfect place for them. The house is built in the style of the traditional Maltese farmhouse, with rooms surrounding a sunny central courtyard. As you step through the large front door, you’re met with a spacious entryway and dining area, and to your right is the study. The dining area leads on to a bathroom and

spacious open-plan kitchen-living area, which carries on through to a reading room and Jean’s utility room, which the couple joke is “out of bounds!” Below us is a wine cellar, and above us are two bedrooms, a bathroom and roof terrace with sea and country views. The property, which is the result of a three-year renovation project and continues to be a labour of love for the couple, also comes with an adjoining field. Jean has already taken to cultivating fruit and vegetables, so I’m absolutely not surprised when they add, “we’ll never go back to city living.” If you rewind back to 2012 however, the state of the house was somewhat different to the delightful home we’re sitting in today. “It was in a horrible state,” says Emma, explaining that it was originally a farm and workhouse, but had been abandoned for over 30 years, leaving it practically in ruins. Ò

I’m a project manager, and when I saw this place, I thought - this is going to be difficult.

Horrible condition and all, the pair had a vision for it, though some family members needed a little convincing. “My grandmother almost cried when she walked in,” Emma recalls, describing her horrified reaction. Yet from what the couple tell me, you really can’t blame her – “I’m a project manager, and when I saw this place, I thought – this is going to be difficult! ” Jean reveals. From then on, Emma and Jean made a plan, with a little help from Emma’s architect father, and began the renovation. The first step of the process however, proved a little problematic. The pair explain how getting the relevant permits was hardly smooth sailing, and

reveal an interesting story behind their house’s chosen name, Ta’ Pietru. “From the old aerial photos of the house we found, dating back to 1908, it was actually built in stages. Parts of it are over 150 years old, but other parts were built in the 1900s,” Jean says. In order to obtain a permit, MEPA regulations at the time stated that they needed to prove that the place had once been a residence – a feat that is far easier said than done. “We literally had to knock on every door in the vicinity and ask people, ‘do you remember anyone who ever lived here?’” Emma explains, until they came across an old woman who lives round the corner. Ò

Home § NOVEMBER 2015 bliss 77

“She remembered that it once belonged to a relation of hers called Pietru. That was a turning point for us,” adds Jean. “We went to the National Library, where they keep the old voting archives, and went through the names of everyone who lived in Benghajsa from the 1930s to the 1950s. Eventually, we managed to find this Pietru, and he had this address listed on his ID,” Emma recalls. That’s when the real work began, starting off with cleaning the old stone. “There were parts of the house that just weren’t habitable,” explains Jean, motioning to the kitchen, where we’re sitting. “These were originally two rooms with very low ceilings built to house animals. Inside the rooms, it was pitch black, and the walls were covered in animal grease and dirt.” The couple did their best to stick to the original layout of the house, built around the courtyard. “We tried to make as little additions as possible while joining all the rooms internally. The stairs were moved to the inside, with the living room joining the rest of the rooms,” says Jean, who was heavily involved in both the project management and construction.

They were also mindful to display many of the house’s old features, though admit that it was impossible to incorporate them all. “The house has certain features – like troughs built into the wall from which they used to feed the animals – which we would have liked

to show, but had to be covered. There are a few that we’ve managed to keep on display, but you need to draw a line, otherwise you’ll be too limited with furniture placement,” Jean explains. The kitchen also has a story, which the pair laugh about as they recount. “We had already seen a few kitchens when we went to Carmelo Delia, and Emma fell in love with this kitchen. Unfortunately, this particular kitchen wasn’t going to fit within our plans. But her mind was made up, so I had to amend the application and move the wall a few centimetres to accommodate the kitchen layout,” Jean recalls. Emma laughs as she adds, “we built the kitchen to fit the furniture!” Upstairs, in order to incorporate a modern element within the traditional surroundings, Jean explains the decision to construct a modern landing structure out of steel beams. Ò

We literally had to knock on every door in the vicinity and ask people, ‘do you remember anyone who ever lived here?’

78 bliss NOVEMBER 2015 § Home

“The house has many old characteristics, and if you stick to traditional alone, it will start to look like a museum,” the pair explain. In fact, while they love antiques and a vintage feel, they also incorporated a modern touch for comfort, such as underfloor heating and ACs, as well as specially designed lighting within the living and kitchen areas, ensuring they are comfortably lit in the evening. The majority of this was happening in the weekends, while Emma was busy studying for her law exams. When the construction was over, it was time for her to step in. Finding inspiration from Pinterest, interior décor magazines and with a helping hand from her dad, Emma describes the effect she was after as “French country with a modern feel,” which they achieved by incorporating interesting pieces from flea markets as well as restored or reclaimed items. The lamp in the living area, for example, is a restored factory light which

was a gift from her mother, and the doors downstairs are reclaimed barn doors. Similarly, the shelving in the reading room is Jean’s handiwork, which he constructed using reclaimed wood from

pallets. The house also features a number of old items which the pair picked up on their travels or from flea markets, such as a collection of Bentwood dining chairs. Apart from the chairs, the house is rife with interesting items, each with its own story. Among these is an old Imperial typewriter which belonged to Emma’s grandfather, a beautiful cane peacock chair, a collection of books dating back to the 1800s, and a restored gramophone. “I actually picked up a Gone With the Wind soundtrack from the Birgu flea market which I played on it, and my nanna absolutely loved it,” Emma says. All things considered however, both have their own favourite parts of the house. For Jean, it’s the terrace. “In the evenings, it’s unbelievably quiet. You can go out with a glass of wine and unwind after a long day. The atmosphere is perfect,” he says. Meanwhile, Emma’s favourite part is the kitchen and living area. “All in all, it’s what we imagined – and we achieved it. Our vision really did come to life,” she says with a smile. n

bedroom style

Your bedroom is your resting place, and a personal one at that, meaning its overall look and feel should lend itself to inducing calmness and peace of mind. Martina Said delves into the latest décor trends for the bedroom.

Statement wallpaper

Ô Wallpaper has made a massive comeback in recent years – modern prints and patterns are making their way into many local households, and they look fantastic. Incorporate wallpaper into your bedroom with a feature wall, in line with the overall colour scheme and look of your bedroom. You may opt for something extravagant and bold, or soft and subtle, depending on your tastes. Try papering the wall behind your bed for a chic, upscale look, or frame your bed with a few strips of wallpaper for an alternative take on the traditional headboard. www.oaktreelife.com

Serene colour palette

Ò Fresh flowers will never go out of fashion. Decorate your bedside table with an ornamental vase filled with seasonal flowers, or go a step further and fill a lonely corner of your bedroom with a beautiful potted plant. Plants and flowers are often overlooked while brainstorming for bedroom design ideas, but they make a notable difference to the aesthetics and quality of a room’s atmosphere. And if your bedroom overlooks the garden, open those doors and windows to give your bedroom an energising, natural backdrop.

Touches of nature

Ó Soft, calming colours for the bedroom are overriding bold and bright hues, paving the way for a retreat-like atmosphere which instils a sense of serenity and peace – something most people crave at the end of a hectic day. Opt for colours that are soothing and that blend well together, such as light purples, soft greens like mint or pastel olive, and lots of cream or off-white. You need not limit your use of soft colours to the walls of your bedroom; rather, incorporate them into the décor through bedside lamps, cushions and wall units. Ò

Peaceful colours are not the only way to bring much-needed calm to a bedroom. Negative space is another great way to achieve this, characterised by a balanced amount of furniture, art and accessories, which embodies a sophisticated style and steers clear of overwhelmingly filled spaces. This is not to be confused with bare and empty – think clean lines, a mix of new and vintage elements and minimal additional décor, which will give a bedroom life and (calm) personality. n

A healthy diet ahead of your wedding Every bride wants to look great on her big day – and a healthy and balanced diet is key. This type of diet allows your body to burn enough calories without losing too much weight. If you follow a balanced diet, consisting of small and regular portions of healthy food, you will automatically be helping your metabolism. Start with a good breakfast, followed by a small portion of food at lunchtime and a good meal in the evening. In between these meals it is recommended that you nibble healthy snacks such as fruit, yogurt, some nuts or a low-calorie item. Each meal, on the other hand, should feature vegetables and fruit, a small amount of bread, small amounts of brown pasta with sauces that are low in fat, and lean meats such as chicken, as well as fish. Red meats and sweets may be eaten but in small quantities. In order to look and feel great, the bride-to-be should also exercise regularly – at least half an hour of brisk walking or relatively intensive exercise every day. This brings about slow but steady loss of weight.

The secret of a good diet and stable weight is balance – in the choice of food, the amount of food consumed and the way in which portions are spread throughout the day. n Geoffrey Axiak M.Sc. Life with a pinch of salt

month in England on their honeymoon, they devoted a lot of time to meeting up with the friends they had made at the restaurant, who were more than keen to see them again. Ben and Maria have been married for 48 years, with two children and four grandchildren (a fifth one is on the way), but they still flirt and banter relentlessly, and their chemistry is palpable. How do they do it? “Life is full of ups and downs,” says Ben. “You really must take everything with a pinch of salt.” Sound words from one of Malta’s top restaurateurs – and even better advice for married life. n

Ta’ Marija restaurant in Mosta is an icon of Maltese culture. Marie-Claire Grima meets Ben and Maria Muscat, the couple behind the cuisine, to talk about love, marriage and maintaining a sense of humour after 48 years. he first time Ben Muscat spoke to Maria Gatt was in 1964, when he asked her and her then-boyfriend to give him a lift back home after a night out at the West End club in St Paul’s Bay. “Ben lived at the top of the hill, quite close to the club, but he was always a lazy bum,” says Maria, twinkling. The alleged lazy bum had just returned from an engineering course at London’s Northern Polytechnic Institute, and Maria, a teenage schoolteacher whose brother wanted to work in the same field, was immediately interested in what he had to say. Soon after this unlikely introduction, the pair started dating and the rest is history. How did a schoolteacher and an engineer who helped build Television Malta go on to open and run one of Malta’s most prolific and well-known restaurants, Mosta’s Ta’ Marija? The answer lies at the bottom of a bottle. “Three weeks before our engagement, he came up to me and said, ‘Maria, guess what? I’ve bought a bar.’” “My friend and I had been out on a pub crawl,” Ben explains, “and we ended it in Mosta, at what was then called The New Inn. When we went there the next day, the man behind the bar said ‘hey! It’s the new owners!’ We had bought it when we were completely hammered.” Ben and Maria decided to make the most of the situation, and when they opened the bar as The Whispers, they

immediately put their backs into it. “I was still working as a teacher during the day, so helping out behind the bar in the evening was the only place where I could meet him,” Maria smiles. Whenever they met during the day, Ben would pretend to be shocked and start running his hands over Maria’s face. “You have eyes! You have a nose! One ear is higher than the other!” They got married on 25th January 1967 – the same date that Maria’s parents were married. They exchanged vows at the parish church in Attard, Maria’s hometown. Maria, who to this day is an icon of elegance and poise, made her own wedding dress – a stylish gown with a fur trim. Their reception was of course held at The Whispers, which by then had grown not only into an excellent restaurant, but also a local institution and the crux around which they built their lifestyle. “It was always packed with guests ranging from sailors to ambassadors and governors to members of the US Sixth Fleet,” Ben recalls. When asked how many people there were at the reception, he shrugs. “I don’t know! Loads of people turned up uninvited, just because they knew us. I still don’t know how we managed to fit so many people in. We just didn’t have the heart to turn anyone away.” This big-hearted attitude has won them many friends and loyal customers over the years, and when they spent a

Three weeks before our engagement, he came up to me and said, ‘Maria, guess what? I’ve bought a bar.’
