or Michael, 31, a Shipping Operations Manager, and Marie, 30, who until recently managed retail outlets Guess and Brooks Brothers, the road to happily ever after wasn’t a straightforward storybook affair. The pair originally met thanks to a little prank, when Michael’s best friend was dating Marie’s cousin. “I had once seen Marie at a Kilimanjaro event as we both climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, but I had never spoken to her properly,” says Michael. “My best friend Darren was at a boat party with Marie, and he grabbed her mobile and sent me a message from it. We exchanged a few messages and ended up meeting,” he says of the beginning of their relationship. But after two years together, Michael admits, “Marie broke up with me!” The pair spent two and a half years apart before getting back together again, and a year later, Michael felt it was the right time to propose. “And here we are today,” he beams, adding, “thank God it happened because it taught us both a lot!” When it came time for the proposal, Michael had to thread carefully. Marie admits, “he’s very romantic and I’m not, so I had told him that if he ever were to propose, it would have to be just me and him, without any big gestures.” So that is precisely what Michael did. “He told me that he was going to pick me up and we were going to meet some friends who also drive Land Rovers at Fomm ir-Rih. When we got there he said we needed to wait for

them, so we started walking. Then at one point I turned around and found him on his knees, crying!” They share a good laugh at the memory, and Michael holds his hands up, admitting, “I get very emotional!” Once the pair were engaged, Marie stepped in to take care of the wedding preparations with the help of family and friends, leaving Michael to plan the honeymoon. “The fact that our families get along really well helped a lot when we were planning,” says Michael, while Marie adds, “I involved his mum a lot.” “It meant a lot to her,” Michael continues, “my mum is very family-oriented and even though I had already left home and was living in my own place, the fact that I was getting married and was about to start my own family… she was really happy to be included.” Despite not being fussy about a lot of the details, the pair were dead set on a few things, such as having Versatile play at their reception, and for the ceremony to take place at Mgarr church – Marie’s hometown. Creative touches
ÓThe creative bride took care of many details of the wedding herself, including a globe where guests could sign their names instead of a guestbook, and a photo backdrop using bookshelves, vintage luggage and cow skin chairs. The souvenirs were also unique: “April is strawberry season and Mgarr is known for its strawberries, so for souvenirs we had strawberry jams, and we covered them with denim I recycled from old pairs of jeans.”
Homemade cake
Ó“The cake was very plain and simple. It was made by Michael’s mum, which is unusual! I looked through lots of photos beforehand and his mum got all my ideas and put them together. The filling was baci and almond,” says Marie.
Meanwhile, with Michael’s uncle being General Manager at the Westin Dragonara, the hotel made sense to accommodate their 550+ guests. “I knew that I wouldn’t be let down,” says Michael. Marie discovered her perfect dress by coincidence, while she was in Italy visiting her cousin. “I wanted a plain and simple dress but hadn’t found one I liked yet. It wasn’t my intention to look for dresses while I was abroad but once we were there, we said why not,” she says, explaining that she really liked a dress she saw. “So I went back up with my mum and cousins and ended up falling in love with another dress. The top part can be removed, revealing a strapless guipure dress underneath. I liked the fact that it came in at the waist and really loved the collar, as well as the fact that I can use the top part again.” Outfits for the bridal party came next, for which the bride decided on a unique denim theme. “Since it was a morning wedding, I wanted it to look relaxed. I had a vision for the bridesmaids and groomsmen, and the fact that I worked at Guess and Brooks Brothers at the time helped me pull it off.” Marie’s seven bridesmaids wore denim shirts
coupled with custom-made tulle skirts while the groomsmen looked trendy in shirts and suspenders. When the day of the wedding finally arrived – 2 April 2016 – the party started early for Marie, who woke up feeling relaxed and was soon joined by her bridesmaids and cousins. The atmosphere was a jovial one with dancing and singing while everyone got ready, and with the relaxed theme carrying on through their natural hair and make-up by Cute Look and Mateja’s respectively. Ò

Michael’s morning was equally relaxing, despite waking up at 5am from all the excitement! “I started getting ready at about 8.30am and soon after everyone started arriving. My mum was getting really excited and prepared food for everyone, while my father opened his whiskies,” he recalls. The nerves started later once the fleet of Land Rovers and Supreme vintage bus that they were using as wedding cars arrived. He admits, “everyone was singing in the bus on the way to the church, but I was a bit tense. I was thinking about the moment when I would see her walking down the aisle – because I’m very emotional, my worry was how I was going to manage to keep it in!” The couple look back on the ceremony as the most meaningful part of the day, with Michael admitting, “the feeling when we were exchanging our vows was out of this world – it was something I never thought I would experience. I felt that God spoke to me that day.” And true to form, the emotional groom, try as he might, could not ‘keep it in’. “As soon as I gave her the ring, I burst into tears,” he laughs. “Everyone started clapping as soon as I wiped my eyes. And as she was putting on the ring, she was
laughing!” Marie also recalls the ceremony affectionately. “The mass passed so quickly that looking back it feels as if I just walked in and walked out. The party afterwards was good fun but actually exchanging our vows in front of all our family and friends was really special.
“
Even a close friend of mine who was in London and couldn’t make it on the day was able to watch it via live stream, which was really nice.” At the reception, the aim was for everyone to have a great time. “We wanted everyone to enjoy themselves and didn’t want to stress at our wedding. We started off saying hi to everyone, but after about an hour we joined the crowd on the dancefloor. Even the older people joined us for a dance – it was really fun,” say Marie and Michael. Ò
”
As soon as I gave her the ring, I burst into tears.

Looking back on their big day, the pair describe it as a contemporary affair, apart from the traditional mass. “People told us that we broke some rules in terms of what normally happens at weddings, like the groomsmen and bridesmaids’ outfits, and the fact that we used Land Rovers as wedding cars. The flowers by Qronfla were also quite different to the norm – we had flowers along the aisle
“
Even the older people joined us for a dance – it was really fun. and along the sides of the church apart from on the altar, and at the reception we had a big bouquet of flowers in the middle.” And while the fun-loving pair say they’d do it all again in a heartbeat, agreeing that the only sad part about the day was that it’s over, Marie does point out one small regret, and uses it to pass on a word of advice to couples
”
planning their big day. “My only regret is not having put together a list of all the photos we wanted. Our photographer had told me to do it, but with everything going on, I just didn’t get round to it. I wanted a photo with a denim shirt over my wedding dress and some photos with guests from overseas but totally forgot, so that’s the only thing I’d do differently,” she says with a smile – everything else was just right. n

Once I moved to New York, I felt right at home, and he was already plotting the proposal.
T
hey say the best relationships start with a solid friendship, which is how the dreamy tale of Andrea Rose Zammit, 30, and Daniel Angelo Said, 35, all began. Their younger years were a constant hit and miss, with the two based in different continents despite both being raised in the small village of Qala, Gozo. Until their stars aligned. “We’ve known each other growing up. Danny used to come back from New York for his summer holidays and he’d always been friendly, but it was always
time for him to go back before we ever had a chance to get to know each other well,” says Andrea, a neurocognitive psychologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. “A few years ago, we reconnected and began constantly texting and skyping each other. It was good timing too because I was finishing my PhD programme in Edinburgh, which meant that I was free to decide where I wanted to pursue my post-doctoral years.” Later that year, Danny – a detective with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) – flew to Malta to take Andrea out to dinner in what is arguably the most romantic gesture imaginable. After he left, the pair continued their long-distance relationship, with Danny visiting a few more times before Andrea made plans to visit him in New York. “I ended up
”
extending my stay, during which time I was also job-hunting. This proved fruitful, because I secured my postdoctoral research fellowship while on holiday, so I went back to Malta to obtain my visa and moved to New York a month later.” Andrea says that the two have long shared a mutual attraction, but since his visits were always brief and they mainly saw each other in the village piazza or at the beach, nothing ever came of it. “I knew he was the one, but our situation was complicated. When things were getting serious, he was in New York, I was in Edinburgh, and my family was in Malta. Making the decision to move to another continent is pretty drastic, especially since we only knew each other from our short holidays, but I always had positive vibes from him and there was always something more going on.” Ò

”A quote from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist sums it up nicely: ‘when you want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you to achieve it’. Once I moved to New York, I felt right at home, and he was already plotting the proposal.”
The proposal came as a surprise during their first holiday back home. In fact, she claims she was hyper with excitement during their entire journey, while, unbeknownst to her, Danny was carrying the ring all along. “The evening we arrived home, we had dinner at my parents’ house, and my mother and I were catching up in the garden while Danny was chilling in the kitchen with my father. When we went back inside, both Danny and my father had these huge grins on their faces.” The next day, the couple went for a picnic and a swim to a secluded beach on the coast of Qala, which has been Danny’s favourite location on the island since childhood. “Once we settled in our spot, Danny said he wanted to take some pictures of us, but he was actually trying to balance his tablet on the rocks in order to film everything – I was so clueless!” she jokes. “When he was happy with the set-up, he turned to me and told

me that he loves me very much, that he couldn’t imagine life without me, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Then he got down on bended knee, and asked me to marry him. I was over the moon, and quickly learnt that the evening prior, I had walked into the kitchen merely moments after Danny had asked my father for my hand in marriage.” Elated and engaged, Andrea and Danny had lots of preparations to take care of, and doing most of it from New York was Photo by Karl Sciberras not easy. “
I woke up feeling calm and serene, until I was walking down the aisle and my racing heart was the only thing I could hear.
”
“My parents did most of the work, and my wedding organiser, Carmelino Refalo, was also of great help, while all of my appointments took place via Skype. Looking back, it was actually fun, but that year Danny and I were constantly running around to finalise all the tiny things that I would never have thought of. It was more exhausting than stressful, but my parents and Danny were of great support and full of enthusiasm.” The beautiful bride arrived at St Joseph Parish Church in Qala, where the couple exchanged vows, in an opentop vintage car from Saint Joseph Car Rentals. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the rooftop and grand ballroom of the Grand Hotel, Mgarr, Gozo on 29 August, 2015. They were particularly smitten with the rooftop of the Grand Hotel, mostly because of the stunning view that it offered of the Mgarr harbour. “To start off, Danny
and I were on the same page, but then my imagination got the better of me and the rooftop was beginning to look, in my mind, like a lush garden adorned with fairy lights and with a gentle breeze from the gods. But my parents were a bit more realistic: the roof top is susceptible to mosquitoes, humidity and is an uncontrolled environment. So after months of discussion, I had another ingenious idea: a rooftop cocktail hour and a lovely sit-down dinner in an elegantly decorated hall. Everyone was happy.” Guests were treated to a four-course meal with a selection of seafood and antipasti for starters, a pasta course, and meat and fish for main course, followed by ample different desserts, cheeses and fruit. The catering was provided by the Grand Hotel, while the traditional almond cake, beautifully decorated with ivory and pink roses, was prepared by Eman Patisserie.
Andrea describes their wedding as classic and traditional with a subtle, fairytale theme which the couple naturally veered towards. As souvenirs, for instance, they gave out charming, gold-dusted fairies and angels. “We knew what we were after, and I was very satisfied with the end result,” she says. On their wedding day, Andrea says she woke up feeling calm and serene, and the feeling of peacefulness stayed with her all day long, “until I was walking down the aisle and my racing heart was the only thing I could hear.” Ò
34 bliss JUNE 2016 § Real Wedding
The mass was celebrated in English and Maltese by Mons. Karm Refalo, who is a close friend of Andrea’s family, in order to make it more inclusive for family and friends visiting from overseas. The couple invited around 200 guests, some of whom travelled from the US, UK and Australia to be part of their big day. “We had classical music at the church, with soft tunes from the harp and the piano, and the beautiful voice of Ruth Portelli, who is a dear childhood friend of mine.”
“
Nothing was rushed, and we made sure to enjoy every second! As for her wedding gown, Andrea recalls, “after Danny and I got engaged, my mother and I started looking at dresses in bridal magazines. I wanted a traditional A-line wedding dress with a V-neck, and we found ‘the one’ at a bridal boutique in London. The dress was made of lace, satin and tulle, and had long, lace sleeves. The hemline was a sweep train and I had a cathedral veil. I’m still in love with it!” The couple shared their first dance to one of their favourite songs, Frank Sinatra’s The way you look tonight,
”
and while they thoroughly enjoyed the reception, Andrea says that the entire day was perfect thanks to the combined effort of everyone who was involved in the preparations. “I loved spending the morning with my family, and in the afternoon, we all enjoyed getting ready. The church and exchanging of the vows were the most significant and meaningful parts of the day, while in the evening, we had a good time with our guests at the reception. Nothing was rushed, and we made sure to enjoy every second!” n

A taste of
Asia
Although they are avid travellers, Melanie and Kevin Pace had never been to Asia. They tell Marie-Claire Grima how their honeymoon provided them with the perfect opportunity to explore the East with forays into Vietnam, Bali and Singapore.
I
t was Melanie’s decision to embark on an exciting Asian adventure, following the advice of the expert staff at Royal Travel, who are renowned for planning worldwide honeymoons. “Kevin normally relies on me for such decisions,” she smiles. “First I was inclined towards the Caribbean, but since I've already been to Mexico and Cuba, I thought that it was a better idea to choose Asia, as it would allow us to have a taste of a different culture. Kevin was quite happy to go along with it!” They booked their honeymoon with Royal Travel, and departed just three days after exchanging vows, travelling to Vietnam through Dubai, from Vietnam to Singapore and then on to Bali. Most of the time, they were travelling solo, although at times they had a private tour leader accompanying them. Each of the countries they visited offered the couple a different experience. “Every place that we visited had its own kind of beauty. Vietnam left us impressed – we paid a visit to Ho Chi Minh Complex, which houses Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Houseon-stilts and the One Pillar Pagoda. We also visited the Temple of Literature, which was the first university of Vietnam.
The country is full of natural beauty too – the mountain landscape of Sapa is so magnificent and picturesque, and Halong was one of the most beautiful and unusual seascapes we had ever seen. We stayed overnight on a boat and it was so romantic. However, I have to say that the way the bikers drive there is crazy – there are horns honking non-stop!” “On the other hand, Singapore was more luxurious – you can compare it to Dubai in that sense, as we found them to be very similar. A highlight of that leg of the journey was visiting the Universal Studios and taking pictures with all the film characters there,” she continues. Ò
“
Some of the locals have close to nothing but they were still so warm and welcoming. The fact that they are so happy and grateful towards life with the little they have was a real inspiration.
”
46 bliss JUNE 2016 § Honeymoon
“
It’s an ideal honeymoon if you like experiencing different cultures and being close to the locals.
”
“Meanwhile, our final stop, Bali, was the most relaxing part of the honeymoon. We saw the monkey forest in Ubud, Goa Gajah – an elephant cave which was rediscovered in 1923, and Tampaksiring, a temple which is over 1,000 years old and whose bathing spot is said to have curative powers. We also visited Gili Trawangan, the largest of the three Gili islands. They’re surrounded by clear waters with schools of tropical fish swimming around. We also spent several serene days in resorts drinking cocktails and basking in the sun, ending our honeymoon on a very chilled note.” Part of the reason why Melanie and Kevin chose three different Asian countries to explore was to experience a culture totally different to their own. For this reason, they did not remain solely in ‘touristy’ areas, but were able to venture off the beaten path to understand what life is really like for the people for whom Vietnam, Singapore and Bali are home. “We went trekking in villages where we stopped to speak to locals. They invited us into their homes, and we often had tea and lunched with them. It was amazing! They have close to nothing but they were still so warm and welcoming. The fact that they are so happy and grateful towards life with the little they have was a real inspiration.” They also sampled the local cuisine – Melanie tried all types of fruit – “I am quite a fruit lover,”
she says – while Kevin, who has more of a sweet tooth, made it a point to try every single dessert that was available. There were times, however, when the culture shock was a little startling. “The food was simple and tasty for the most part – usually a combination of white rice, vegetables and either fish, duck or chicken. However, we would occasionally catch a glimpse of the kitchens and our appetites would disappear – the hygiene wasn’t always up to standard! And when we visited the Gili Islands, we were shocked at the state of public transport.
There were vegetables and poultry left on the floor in the middle of the public boat, with people walking all over the mess and nobody bothering to clean up.” Despite this, Melanie and Kevin think of their experience with great fondness and say that they would love to do it all over again. “If you’re considering these three countries as a honeymoon destination, and you enjoy experiencing different cultures and being close to the locals, it’s an ideal place for your first holiday together as a married couple. The only part of the trip that we didn’t enjoy was coming back!” n

riving up the steep and narrow country lane leading to this charming house of character, you quickly lose sight and sound of busy roads, honking horns and bustling village core. This sense of tranquillity is only heightened as I pass through the gate, and later, set foot inside the living quarters of this marvellous home. The property’s friendly owner greets me in the drive and proceeds to show me around the magnificent outdoor area which, I learn, is where the family – including three children and a number of pets – spends the majority of their time entertaining friends, family and guests. “This is where we live for a good eight months or so of the year,” she tells me, and it’s easy to see why. A large swimming pool lines one side with white deckchairs adorned with grey cushions. Across from the pool is an elevated deck with three distinct yet continuous spaces: a lounge area filled with sofas and armchairs; a dining area with a large table and chairs and finally, a fully-fledged kitchen that gives any average kitchen a run for its money, complete with a barbecue, pizza oven, four burners, fridge and freezer, as well as compartments for plates, cutlery and glasses. The outdoor area, however, was the last part of the property to reach completion. Ò

My father and husband were scouting for properties in the south as we love the area and wanted to stay here, and after looking for around two years, we came across this one. When we first saw it, however, it was nowhere close to what it looks like now. The land appeared inaccessible and there were fields all around, but structurally, the house was in pretty good shape. We had been living in it for around five years before we could start working on the outdoor area as we didn't have planning permission and our resources were severely punctured with the first part of the project.”
Upon buying the property and acquiring the necessary permits, works immediately began on restoring and converting the building’s interior. “Most of the rooms, with the exception of two bedrooms, required reinforcements to the roofs, while all the apertures needed to be changed and made of solid wood. In order to bring as much light as possible into the living area, the architect suggested constructing a stainless steel frame with glass, which added a modern touch to the building and became the main feature of this house.” A few further changes were carried out over the years in order to maximise the space and accommodate the family’s changing living arrangements. Upon entering the main door, a study area is located on the right with an adjacent bathroom, both of which recently replaced their son’s bedroom. Besides the eye-catching steel and glass feature, you’ll instantly notice the myriad colours, patterns, textures and styles that occupy the large and spacious living area which, similar to the outdoor area, is subtly divided into a number of distinct living spaces: the TV/living, dining and sitting areas. In a separate room, accessed from the living area, is the
”
kitchen, while behind the open courtyard are the sleeping quarters, consisting of four bedrooms, one of which has an ensuite bathroom. “I’m drawn towards a number of different styles, but I particularly love the colonial, tropical, ethnic and tribal looks. Heavy wood, bursts of colour and quirky pieces catch my attention, and generally, the more peculiar an item is, the better. The living area hasn’t always looked like this though,” she smiles. “When we first moved in, the children were young and would scribble and draw on everything and spill things everywhere, but once they grew up that stopped, and we decided that we needed a new sofa. But when I walked into a favourite local shop of mine, I got somewhat carried away. Since my husband and I were shopping together that day, we both got swept up in the excitement of it all and started looking at tables and chairs and a bunch of other things.” That one shopping spree kicked off an extensive redecoration project, starting with a new layout for the entire area. “We had a lot of wasted space so we sought the advice of a designer – the television area used to be where the current dining area is, and we rearranged it all to maximise the space,” she explains. “As for the décor, my husband left the choice of colours and fabrics largely in my hands – his tastes are a bit more conservative while I love to add colour and interesting touches. I didn’t want everything to be matching and the same, and the beige sofa wouldn’t have been a viable choice when the children were young.” The range of styles might seem overwhelming at first, but upon closer inspection, you notice that the choice of items and their placement is far from random – on the contrary, every piece is thoughtfully placed to complement or contrast something right beside or beneath it. In the dining area, the red
lampshades complement the patterned, coral-backed chairs, while in the sitting area, touches of grey on the armchairs, lampshades and the wall within which the fireplace is housed, all come together to create a harmonious and individual space. “The frame of the courtyard is on the grey scale and a major feature in the house, so every item we chose had to complement that,” she asserts. “Thankfully, lots of colours go well with grey, and we made sure to implement this throughout the entire house. In fact, the outdoor furniture in the pool area is white with grey cushions and details, and the bathrooms inside are on the grey and neutral scale too.” Ò

From the living area to the rustic blue kitchen, this home is warm and welcoming with a lived-in feel, and a clear reflection of its owners’ tastes and life experiences. In fact, it is clear that a number of ornamental objects are ones they brought home with them from a distant country. “We’ve been very lucky to travel, and wherever we went, we always brought something back with us, such as the round, wooden ornaments which we bought in Australia and the tribal African masks. The masks are particularly special to me – I was brought
up in Africa, and this collection of masks reminds me of my childhood each time I look at them.” While every room or area in the house is special and dear to her, she admits that the kitchen is probably her favourite room. “Everything goes on in the kitchen – dinners, homework, discussions – it’s the heart of the home, and I love to cook. Our kitchen is also a simple and practical one – no fancy drawers or self-closing mechanisms. It is actually the same kitchen we had
ordered for our previous home, but when we moved, I brought it all with me. I like to paint it from time to time and give it a new look, and only recently finished painting it in the colour you see now,” she giggles. “I’m constantly hopping from one house project to another – the only room I haven’t ransacked yet is our bedroom, because it’s sentimental. We’ve had it for 19 years, as long as we’ve been married, and I have no intention of changing it so long as the furniture remains intact!” n

Live life outdoors!
As we all make the move onto our terraces and balconies or out into our gardens, it’s time to embrace the sunshine season. Jo Caruana picks her favourite trends for days spent al fresco. Regardless of the size of your space, set the tone for a great summer by implementing some of the latest trends. They all promise to create a completely new look in no time.
Mood Lighting
ÒNothing says ‘summertime evenings’ like that dusky hue that’s crafted as the sun sets. Recreate that with mood lighting outdoors – just as you would indoors. We recommend large candles, solar-powered garden lights and dimmable lamps. Lighting completely changes the dynamics of an area, so use it liberally. spoonfullofsugardesign.com
Colourful Crockery
ÑWe love the whimsical side of summer – when it’s ideal to throw caution to the wind, ditch your more sombre everyday crockery and go for something super bright and colourful. This summer, bright blues, pinks, purples and greens are the order of the day, and crockery presents the opportune way for you to include them without having to change too much.
Get Comfy
ÒThe trend for complete comfort follows you out from your living room and bedroom this season, and into your outdoor space. Why shouldn’t you feel super comfy when you’re outdoors? This isn’t camping, you know! So, think relaxation: cushions, soft fabric, lovely loungers, and even hammocks and hanging chairs. It’s al fresco naptime! Ò

Black, White… or Both
ÒMichael Jackson said it best when he sang: ‘Doesn’t matter if it’s black or white’ and, this summer, we have to agree. If you don’t opt for the bright colour mix that’s also on-trend, we suggest a palette of black, white – or both. This works everywhere, from your garden furniture to your outdoor carpets and cushions. The key is to keep it simple and avoid other accents.

Fiery Tempered
ÑThe biggest gadget trend for summer 2016 would have to be outdoor fireplaces and fire pits – where you and your guests sit around the fire to dine. Of course, they won’t work in every space (and we wouldn’t recommend it for mid-August!) but, if you have a garden or yard, then they’re worth considering, especially as the latest furniture designs even contain the pits within them. They’re a good investment because they add heat, create light and even let you toast marshmallows on an open flame.

On Display
ÑÓWhether on a tiny balcony or in a huge garden, the way you display your plants and flowers can make a massive difference. This summer is all about getting creative – whether by purchasing pots in lots of different colours, or getting hands on to create some DIY features of your own. The key point? Have fun with it! n

A healthy diet A healthy diet means eating small amounts of all kinds of food. Although we know that fruit and vegetables are the healthiest foods, it is important to include other foods too. According to research, brown bread, pasta and rice are much healthier than their white versions because they contain a larger amount of fibre. This causes the food in our intestines to form bulk by absorbing water and making our faeces bigger and heavier. This, in turn, helps clean out our intestines and gives us more time to absorb nutrients, including fats and sugars, more slowly, thus helping to regulate our blood fat, cholesterol and sugar levels. Nuts, seeds and legumes contain healthy oils that accumulate in the joints and are therefore very important for people suffering from arthritis. All nuts and beans that are protein sources that come from plant sources, are healthy and rather than increasing our blood cholesterol, help us lower it when eaten in moderate amounts. As part
of a healthy diet it is also important to include meat and other proteins such as fish, chicken, rabbit, poultry and other meats that contain less fat. This will give us the protein content we need without the excess and unhealthy fat. Dairy products are also crucial as sources of calcium to strengthen bones. These are especially important for children, where bones are still growing and developing, and in elderly persons whose bones are more brittle due to lower calcium content. Red meat and butter are also important in small amounts. These fats provide a layer of insulation under the skin and around the internal organs to protect them and keep them warm. In moderate amounts, therefore, these too are important. In conclusion, it is important to eat the correct amounts of each type of
food. Combined with a moderate amount of exercise, one will be promoting a healthy lifestyle and maintaining their health. n Geoffrey Axiak M.Sc. Nursing (Manchester), B.Sc. Nursing, P.G.Dip. Sposi fortunati Marisa and Arnaldo Urso celebrated their 34th anniversary this year, right after toasting to the wedding of their beloved daughter Petra. They tell Marie-Claire Grima all about love, adventure and why rainy days are the luckiest of all.
T
he first thing 19-year-old Marisa Bajada noticed about 27-year-old Arnaldo Urso was his tan, which offset his bright blue eyes. “He had just come back from a skiing holiday and he was so dark and handsome. We had friends in common, but what got us talking were our cars – they were both Alfa Romeos. I had just bought one in blue and he teased me mercilessly, saying I didn’t know what colour an Alfa Rosso was supposed to be,” Marisa recalls, laughing. Teasing aside, Arnaldo was immediately smitten with Marisa. His father was the famed entertainer Armando Urso, who had died at 58 of a genetic heart condition when Arnaldo was 20. A shy, gentle boy who was the eldest of four children, Arnaldo had assumed a responsible role at an early age, and he always knew that he wanted to marry, settle down and have a family of his own sooner rather than later. Shortly after they started dating, he knew that Marisa was the one. “We were in the car one day and he said to me ‘don’t you think we should get married?’ From such a hopeless romantic, I would have expected a more extravagant proposal,” Marisa teases. “I like to do things cautiously, and I wasn’t sure you would want to marry me. You were beautiful and smart, and so much fun to be with – I didn’t think I deserved you,” Arnaldo replies, with typical humility. Marisa had to go up to Sicily with her mother and her bridesmaids to buy a wedding gown. “This was Malta in the early 1980s so there weren’t any of the lovely bridal shops we
have today. When we got back to Malta, the customs official wanted me to take it out of the box and put it out on the floor. My wedding dress on the floor! I panicked and told him it was bad luck for anyone to see the dress before I got married in it. Somehow, that line worked!” Their wedding day – 1 May 1982 – was unseasonably rainy. “We got married in the Capuchin church in Floriana, but the chauffeur didn’t want to send his brand new Rolls Royce to Sliema through the flood at Msida to get me. So I ended up being half an hour late to my own wedding. All my neighbours came out with umbrellas, creating a tent so that my dress wouldn’t get wet! Arnaldo’s look of sheer relief and joy when I finally walked through the doors of the church was one of the highlights of the day.” “The Italians have a saying,” Arnaldo beams. “Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata! I’m a religious man, and I believe God brought Marisa and myself together because we belong together. We’re both very fortunate indeed to have enjoyed so many wonderful years.” The newlyweds celebrated their wedding at the Phoenicia, departing shortly afterwards for their honeymoon, a monthlong tour of Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong. Their passion for travelling only intensified as the years went by. Just before Arnaldo retired from banking, the genetic heart condition that had stolen his father away so young reared its ugly head, and he had to undergo a bypass. This gave the couple a renewed appetite for life and a newfound thirst for adventure. “We never travelled as much as we did after I retired,” Arnaldo says. “Those six years were some of the most glorious we had ever had.” However, the next great adventure is still around the corner – their daughter Petra is expecting, and in a few months’ time, they will become grandparents. It’s a role that they will undoubtedly embrace with the same tenderness and fervour that they have shown each other throughout the course of their long, happy marriage. n
