Soft petal blooms

ØThis year, soft petal blooms like peonies, garden roses, ranunculus and dahlias are the most requested flowers among brides, and they’re so gorgeous to look at, it’s really www.socialandpersonalweddings.ie quite easy to see why. Create a romantic effect by using peonies in your bridal bouquet, or go for a real wow factor by incorporating loose rose petals scattered on tables – another trend that’s going strong.

Hand calligraphy

ØThe past years have seen such a huge rise in the popularity of hand calligraphy that it’s not uncommon for the bride and groom to try their hand at it! Fortunately, if you love the look but aren’t as keen on doing it yourself, there are several companies and even artists that offer the service for your invitations.

A whirlwind wedding

What’s the shortest time in which you could organise a wedding? Five months? Five weeks? What about five hours? Jessica Spiteri Catania and Jeremy Spiteri tell Marie-Claire Grima how they pulled off a race against the clock to the altar. p h ot o s b y se a n a z z o pa rd i

J

eremy Spiteri and Jessica Catania had been long-time friends before they started going out in 2009. “I used to bring him over to my house when we were still friends, and my family would tease us – especially one of my nieces who used to say ‘You’re going to steal my auntie away!’ Then eventually, it really happened,” Jessica says. Since then, they’ve never been apart for more than a day. After years of dating, Jeremy proposed while the two were watching American Idol in Jessica’s room. It’s something that Jessica still teases him about, although she says it totally matches his goofy and easygoing personality. They held a lavish engagement party in Gharghur on 7th September, 2014, attended by around 200 guests. Jessica’s original plan was to get married two years later, but since the two had always wanted to get married on the eve of a public holiday, they pushed the date to 18th March, 2017. And so the preparations began. “I was a bit of a bridezilla,” she confesses. “Although I knew exactly what I wanted my dress to look like, I tried on more than 60 dresses from 15 different shops before finding the perfect one at Alamango, with the help of Joyce and Marisa. The one I chose was made with hand-made lace and I knew I’d be able to dance all night in it. As soon as I put it on, my friends and family started crying and clapping. I added my own touch through the alteration service to make it my own.”

I tried on more than 60 dresses from 15 different shops before finding the perfect one.

“She was watching a lot of episodes of Say Yes To The Dress!” Jeremy says with a smile. Meanwhile, Paul and Jon from JD Formal Wear suggested the smart blue suits that Jeremy, his groomsmen, best men, witnesses and pageboys wore, while Eleanor from Aphrodite took care of the nine ladies in the bridal party who were dressed in various shades of pink, Jessica’s favourite colour. Finally, Bonavia Offset Printers prepared invitations to her exact specifications. “I was present at everyone’s appointments,” Jessica grins, adding that her ‘wonder woman’, Katia Gatt from KG Events helped keep her sane throughout the process.

However, the unthinkable happened a few months before Jessica and Jeremy’s big day, in November 2016. After a visit to the hospital, Jessica’s father was told he was terminally ill, with only a few months left to live. It would be heartbreaking news for anyone to receive, but especially for Jessica, whose bond with her father was incredibly strong, and who had just lost her grandfather a couple of weeks prior. Both families were devastated – Jeremy and Jessica’s fathers were close friends, and Jessica says that her husband-to-be’s parents offered great emotional support during this time. Still, it cast a dark cloud over the wedding planning. Ò

Jessica’s mother walked her down the aisle to Carrie Underwood’s Mama’s Song.

As the months went on, Mr Catania’s condition got worse, until after a particularly bad weekend, the doctor told Jessica and her family that he couldn’t say with certainty that her father would wake up the next day. It was then that she decided, at 12.36pm at her desk on an ordinary Monday, that her father wasn’t going to leave this world without seeing her get married. Jeremy agreed

– they were going to get married that same evening, by his side, at Mater Dei Hospital. Jeremy’s cousin and Jess’ close friend, beauty blogger Dyna YT, chimed in to help, managing to find countless suppliers who were willing to help out with seating, flowers, photography, hair and make-up on super-short notice, and in just a few hours, the wedding began to take shape. However, there were a few hiccups too – Jessica’s seamstress hadn’t quite finished with the alterations on the dress and was abroad that day. “I was going to get married in black,” Jessica says, “before my friend Petra came to the rescue. She offered to lend me the dress

she had gotten married in herself, just a few months earlier!” There was also a lot of paperwork to sort out, from both the legal and religious sides, but somehow, the permits from the Vatican and the Justice Ministry arrived in time. You could say it was almost a miracle. Weak as he was, Jessica’s father’s eyes lit up when he saw her – “Kemm inti sabiha,” he said, his voice full of emotion, as he held the couple’s hands together against his own. With a crowd of family members, friends and colleagues in attendance, there wasn’t a dry eye in the hospital chapel when Jessica and Jeremy were pronounced husband and wife. Ò

After the couple shared their first dance to Lady in Red, they continued to dance all night.

Later, the bride made sure to let everyone know that the official wedding two weeks later was still on. “I still had butterflies in my stomach that morning, even though we were technically already married,” she says. “It was my turn to be a groomzilla,” says Jeremy, who

recounts how he went to the venue hours beforehand to check that everything would be perfect for the reception. Jeremy and Jessica renewed vows at the bride’s hometown parish church in Mellieha. Her mother walked her down the aisle to Carrie Underwood’s Mama’s Song. “I chose the song long before I knew my mother would be the one walking me down the aisle. We actually ended up living the lyrics of the song,” Jessica says. The newly-newlyweds then went to pay Jessica’s father a visit at hospital, before rolling up to the wedding reception at Palazzo Promontorio. Around 700 people were at the wedding; they toasted the couple with drinks supplied by Hansa Wines and Spirits, and made sure they’d remember the night forever with photos by Petit Events’ Selfie Mirror. This time, Jessica wore her own dress. And after the couple shared their first dance to Lady in Red, they continued to dance all night. “If there’s one thing I would change, it would be that I would have stuck to my original plan of getting married in 2016. That way, my grandfather and father would both have been alive and well to see us,” says Jessica. “Everything else? It was perfect.” n

A Picnic-Style Affair Last April, Teri Spiteri and Mark Camilleri celebrated their love with a beautiful garden wedding which was chock full of personal touches and unique details. They share how they made it happen with Sarah Micallef. P h oto s b y M a r k C a ss a r

I

t was 10 years to the day that Mark Spiteri, 29, and Teri Camilleri, 26, first met, back when Teri, at just 16, was busy studying for her O’Levels. “I took a short break from studying to head to a party at a friend’s house, and there he was,” Teri recalls. “A few days later, he officially asked me out after giving me a lift home (he had a car you see, very exciting stuff!)” After seven years of dating, marriage was the natural next step, and the proposal came during a family trip to Lyon for Teri’s cousin’s wedding. “As everyone settled down for a home-made dinner under the stars, I had no idea that my dad had already given Mark his blessing to pop the question. He took me aside for a short walk after dessert, and got down on one knee under a bright summer moon. I said yes, of course, and not a moment too soon – his knee was soaking wet from the dewy lawn,” she laughs. They set the date – 29th April 2017 – exactly 10 years to the day that Mark asked Teri out, so they only had one anniversary date to remember. The choice of venue came next, and with a garden wedding in mind, the couple found the beautiful Villa

Bologna to be the perfect fit, in more ways than one. “As we were walking around, a little plaque near the front door explained that the villa was built as a wedding present for the Lord’s daughter, who not only shares Teri’s full name, but also happened to get married in April. Two coincidences in one paragraph? We thought that was a sign,” the newlyweds say. As for the church, Attard Parish was close enough to the venue to save guests from parking twice, and was the perfect size to accommodate their families. Meanwhile, the fact that the church and venue were so close gave the couple the idea to incorporate the short walk after the ceremony into the celebrations too, because, in their words, “why wait any longer to get the party started?” They chose a morning wedding in order to spend as much of the day with their guests as possible, and their top priority was for it to be happy, relaxed and fun – much like a family picnic. Teri took care of the majority of the planning, with the invaluable help of her mother when it came to project management. Ò

Real Wedding § JUNE 2017 bliss 21

She explains, “my mother kept things in order and happening on time, while I came up with all the ideas. Also, I think Pinterest deserves a mention. Because seriously, what would I have done without it?” she laughs. While Mark chose four best men for the big day, Teri admits not being able to pick among her 11 closest friends, so decided to forgo bridesmaids entirely. Instead, her friends were each given small jobs to handle throughout the day. “This meant that there wasn’t one person who was overwhelmed with all the jobs, and all of our closest friends had a role on the day. Most importantly, these preparations meant that we were completely reassured that the event was in good hands, so we could relax and enjoy the day,” they say. When the big day rolled round, Teri admits that Mark had a far busier morning, as he accompanied the main best man to the

church and venue to drop off a few items and check that all the preparations were underway. “He was back home just in time to get dressed before Mark Cassar, our genius photographer, arrived. Mark was pretty jittery at this point, so the guys had a drink as they all got ready and then headed down to the church about half an hour before the mass started,” she explains. Meanwhile, on Teri’s end, things were oddly calm. “I’m quite a control freak, so I dreaded waking up with anxious thoughts and the need to know what was going on. Thankfully, none of that happened. All the preparations and meetings with the team did their job – I trusted that everything was going smoothly and woke up with a grin, looking forward to enjoying every moment of the day,” she recalls happily. As Teri got ready at home, along with her mother and sister-in-law, her brothers and niece arrived, as well as her witness – an uncle visiting from Houston – and a close family friend who came down from Holland for the day, making for a busy household, bustling with activity, happiness and excitement. Ò

The ceremony was celebrated by another of Teri’s uncles, giving the mass and sermon a personal touch. The music was also carefully chosen, she explains, having grown up around movie music and classical music thanks to her father and brother. “My absolute favourite piece, Clair de Lune, played as we said our vows. The Glasgow Love Theme from Love Actually and the Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso accompanied the offertory and communion, and the mass was bookended by some personal favourites sung by the talented Tezara.” The bride wore a beautiful flowing gown from Ivory and Co. – the very first

Complementary cake

ÔThe pair chose a simple, three-tier cake covered in plain white fondant. “It was decorated with fresh succulents and foliage to complement the rest of the venue décor. We opted for three different flavours: carrot, Baci and almond. None of them disappointed.”

Special succulents

ÓFor souvenirs, the couple opted for a variety of succulents in small glass jars with a simple tag. “We’re still getting photos from guests showing us how they repotted them, or where they placed it around the house and how happy they are that it hasn’t died yet,” Teri laughs. The succulents also set the theme for the invites and décor. “I work at Switch – Digital & Brand, which has its own design studio, so I was lucky enough to have the invitations custom designed to feature the succulents in a simple, square format.” one she tried on. Looking back on dress shopping, she recalls, “I tried on a few different shapes and styles from different outlets, but I always knew that I wanted to have something I can move in comfortably. The comfort test was whether or not I could do the chicken dance easily – the look on the faces of those poor shop assistants

was priceless! That first one I tried on was by far the most comfortable, so that was that,” she laughs. Once the ceremony was over, it was time for the walk to the venue, accompanied by their guests and band – a moment the couple looks back on among their fondest memories of the day. Ò

The comfort test was whether or not I could do the chicken dance easily!

The jovial atmosphere created by their band, Vitamine, was exactly what they wanted – so much so that they actually brought them over from France for the big day. Teri explains, “during that same trip when Mark proposed, we got to know of Vitamine when they played at my cousin’s wedding. The second we arrived at the venue and heard that raspy voice singing Over the Rainbow, Mark and I exchanged one look that said ‘Get. Their. Card.’ The wedding wouldn’t have been the same without them!” Food at the reception was left in the capable hands of Island Caterers, while Hansa Wines & Spirits ensured a stocked bar for Teri and Mark’s 350 guests. Meanwhile, flowers by Floreal helped set the scene as the newlyweds took

to the dancefloor for their first dance: a happy, upbeat swing number called Beyond the Sea. Looking back on their big day, the couple enjoyed every minute, but point to two moments that really stood out. Apart from the walk from the church to the venue, Teri considers their send-off under a tunnel of sparklers as a definite favourite, explaining, “both were full of music and surrounded by everyone we love the most, and we really felt the love.” Meanwhile, there were also some waterworks when it came to cutting the

cake – “family members got emotional and whispered a few very touching words in our ears, and we couldn’t hold back.” Offering a few words of advice to couples planning their own big day, Teri’s recommendation is simple: just do you. “Identify exactly what you want out of your day and do just that. Eyebrows will be raised, questions will be asked and everyone will have their own opinion, but at the end of the day, everyone will have the time of their lives and these little details will make all the difference. Do you, and it’ll be the best day of your lives.” n

A soft and splendid celebration From the intimate choice of venue with a stunning view to their upbeat first dance, Martina Said meets newlyweds Diandra and Andrew Barberi to find out all about their perfect autumn wedding. P h ot o s b y G i a n F r a n c o St ell i n i

D

iandra and Andrew Barberi’s first encounter occurred around 14 years ago, while both of them were queueing for an audition that they can barely remember anything about. What they do remember, however, is the long time they spent chatting while waiting in line, where they instantly hit it off. Then, six years ago, Andrew, 33, a social worker who manages a children’s residential home, re-connected with Diandra, 31, a physics teacher, through Facebook, out of the conviction that her face looked somewhat familiar.

“We talked online for some time, but we couldn’t place how or where we knew each other. Eventually, it clicked, and we recalled meeting at this audition many years earlier. After getting to know each other online, we eventually met up and the relationship took its natural course,” says Andrew. Around two years into their relationship, Andrew started shopping around to furnish a house that had been a work in progress, and his own personal project, for some time. “We visited lots of shops together and Diandra helped me a

great deal in the selection process. At a point, I started to feel that this would be her home as well someday, so I wanted her to be involved in the works as much as possible. It all happened very naturally.” On Christmas Day of 2014, Andrew had a plan laid out to propose to Diandra. Knowing the curious creature she is, he wanted to ensure that she wouldn’t guess what her gift was – a game she often likes to tease him with. “I put the ring box in a big box, wrapped it and hid it from her so that she wouldn’t play the guessing game and find out what it was. Ò

28 bliss JUNE 2017 § Real Wedding

I hoped that, once she unwrapped the box, she’d open it and find the small box inside, at which point I’d get down on one knee and propose. But instead, she opened the ring box and put the ring on – I didn’t even get the chance to ask her to marry me!” Diandra chuckles, saying Andrew had the cheesier version in mind and, although it didn’t go according to his plan, it was still an emotional and memorable moment. The couple went on to set the date for 30th October 2016, with the ceremony celebrated at the Church of Bahar ic-Caghaq, Santa Marija ta’ l-Angli, followed by a reception at The Chophouse. “I handled most of the preparations,” says Diandra, “but Andrew was involved in every decision as ultimately, it was our wedding day and we both had to be happy. I would narrow down the selection and present the choices within our budget, and we would then discuss and decide.” The couple was adamant about

I only got emotional when we exchanged our vows.

keeping the wedding small and personal, which was reflected in the venue and overall feel of their wedding. They also wanted to avoid the summer heat and had to work around Diandra’s available time off, which is why they opted for October, when the weather is mild and schools have mid-term holidays. “We had less than 200 people, and knew that we didn’t want a big villa or hotel, but a venue that was intimate and which had a view,” they explain. “It took us a while to find what we wanted, and ultimately chose

The Chophouse, which has a lovely view of Valletta and a sizeable terrace that was sheltered in case it rained. Luckily, we had good weather on the day and the view was perfectly clear.” As for the church, they were advised by their photographer to find one with lots of natural light. This, coupled with the fact that they were after a small church, led them to the Bahar ic-Caghaq Parish, which was also close to the reception venue, making it easier for guests to travel to after the ceremony. “We encouraged people who were coming to the reception to come to the church as well – it’s nice to have a lot of people there for the most important part of the day, and it seemed to work, because most of our guests joined us in the celebration of mass.” Ò

Real Wedding § JUNE 2017 bliss 31

Being a keen planner herself, Diandra never really considered engaging the help of a wedding planner. “With social media nowadays, there are a lot of groups that give honest opinions, making the process of wedding planning quite easy. We also knew that, for the wedding day itself, our friends and those involved in the

wedding were trustworthy and able to handle the tasks that we asked them to take care of.” And while they didn’t have an official theme for their wedding day, they knew exactly what they wanted and simply combined their tastes to deliver a soft and elegant celebration, without being too stiff. Andrew opted for a blue suit with a pale pink tie and pocket square coupled with brown shoes, while the bridesmaids donned floaty, pale pink dresses that were perfect for an autumn wedding, and complemented the bride’s particular yet beautiful choice of dress. “I had tried on a dress similar to what I wanted at one of the first shops I visited, but was told that it was promised to someone else, so I thought of getting my dress made at a seamstress, in line with what I had tried on and liked. However, it proved impossible to set up an appointment,” says Diandra. “In the meantime, my mother told me about an open day at Camilleri Paris Mode, so we went. Ò

Walk the walk

ÓRather than being dropped off in front of the door, the newlyweds enjoyed a short walk along the Sliema promenade on their way to the reception, taking some memorable shots along the way.

Plain and pretty ÓThe couple opted for a plain, all-white wedding cake, accentuated with white ribbon between the tiers, topped with fresh flowers by Floral Art, in keeping with their overall décor.

32 bliss JUNE 2017 § Real Wedding

I explained what I wanted and they showed me this dress which was a short, satin strapless dress with a detachable skirt made of layers of organza frills. My mother and I fell in love with it, and though it was slightly over budget, it was just what I wanted: simple yet particular. I added an applique belt around the waist to add a touch of glamour, and the final look had my name written all over it!” On the day, Andrew explains that he was pretty calm overall. “I only got emotional when we exchanged our vows, and a little stressed when taking photos before the reception because I just wanted us to go and enjoy ourselves.” Diandra, on the other hand, says she was pretty anxious in the days leading up to

The entire day was just as we wanted, from getting ready in the morning and the emotional ceremony to the fun reception.

the wedding, particularly the night before when a terrible storm flooded hotels in the Sliema area. “Since the reception was going to be close to the sea, I was quite concerned, but then, on the day itself I calmed myself down and thought, I’ve done everything I could, and anything that may crop up is beyond me. Luckily, nothing did and we had good weather.” The reception went off without a hitch, and the couple shared their first dance to an upbeat number – Walk The Moon’s Shut Up and Dance. “We didn’t want to dance to a romantic song because we weren’t particularly comfortable about it. We choreographed a small part of it and fooled around for the rest, but we had lots of fun and it got our guests going,” they recall. “The entire day was just as we wanted, from getting ready in the morning and the emotional ceremony to the fun reception and getting our hotel room upgraded at the end of the night. The only downside is that it all passed so quickly – but as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun.” n

34 bliss JUNE 2017 § Jewellery

The ultimate gift of love Over the centuries, wedding rings have been attributed with different meanings and purposes, often becoming a testimony of wealth and means, much like the dowry, rather than a celebration of love and a life in common. Today, on the contrary, choosing your wedding bands is a key moment in the organisation of this important event. Together, the bride and the groom choose the precious jewel to be worn for their entire life, symbolising their loyalty to each other – the love that binds them and the direction they have chosen to take together.

T

raditionally, yellow gold has been largely preferred by jewellers for wedding bands, but in recent years, different colours and materials have been adopted, such as platinum wedding bands, which are more exclusive but still traditional, pink gold wedding bands, which are sophisticated and slightly retro, white gold wedding bands, which show originality, and gold and diamond wedding rings which express class and romance. Choosing the right jeweller is very important when selecting your engagement and wedding rings. At Diamonds International Malta, we have a wide selection of bridal jewellery and years of professional experience to help guide you in making the perfect choice. Our diamonds are flawless and the ultimate symbol of true love and lifetime commitment, and our diamond experts are at hand should you need to know

about our diamonds’ standards for beauty and brilliance. We invite our customers to participate in the creation of their unique wedding rings by choosing the materials, combining designs and finishes, and ultimately signing and dedicating the wedding seal to their loved one. We also offer customers the unique opportunity to visit our workshop and meet with our designer and goldsmith, and witness their diamond being set on their engagement ring. From the simplicity of a platinum band to the more intricate designs, our wedding band collections are a symbol of strength and splendour – the promise of a beautiful life together. Our jewellery allows our customers to celebrate all that they have been through over the years, and all that there is to come. Our jewellery is the ultimate gift of love – a true emotional bond. n

A healthy diet ahead of your wedding Every bride wants to look great on her big day – and a healthy and balanced diet is key. This type of diet allows your body to burn enough calories without losing too much weight.

If you follow a balanced diet, consisting of small and regular portions of healthy food, you will automatically be helping your metabolism. Start with a good breakfast, followed by a small portion of food at lunchtime and a good meal in the evening. In between these meals it is recommended that you nibble healthy snacks such as fruit, yogurt, some nuts or a low-calorie item. Each meal, on the other hand, should feature vegetables and fruit, a small amount of bread, small amounts of brown pasta with sauces that are low in fat, and lean meats such as chicken, as well as fish. Red meats and sweets may be eaten but in small quantities. In order to look and feel great, the bride-to-be should also exercise regularly – at least half an hour of brisk walking or relatively intensive exercise every day. This brings about slow but steady loss of weight. The secret of a good diet and stable weight is balance – in the choice of food, the amount of food consumed and the way in which portions are spread throughout the day. n Geoffrey Axiak M.Sc. found Unspoilt beaches, tea and rum plantations and friendly wildcats – Andrew and Bernadette Tonna tell Marie-Claire Grima all about their blissful honeymoon in Mauritius.

hen choosing a destination for their honeymoon, Andrew and Bernadette Tonna’s wish list included a mix of lounging on the beach, enjoying nature and sightseeing. “We were also on a budget, so going somewhere that had a touch of luxury but didn’t break the bank was important. We also wanted somewhere that we could explore on our own, somewhere ‘safe’ that didn’t need a tour guide,” says Ben. One country in particular seemed to tick all the boxes – Mauritius. “It looked stunning and we agreed it was the right fit for all the things we wanted to do.” The pair booked the holiday through a travel agency, which helped them pick the activities that piqued their interest the most. They flew into Mauritius from Dubai, and spent the first part of their honeymoon in the west part of the island. “We stayed at a great resort in the Flic en Flac area called The Sands Resort & Spa. It was our base for 10 days. From there, we could easily drive around most of the south and south-west of the island,” Ben recalls. “We spent a few days driving around the island and pitstopping at different beaches. Each one of them was amazing and had crystal-clear water,” Ben enthuses. “What really impressed us was how gorgeous and untouched the beaches were. Even though most of them were public beaches, there were no umbrella or sun bed vendors taking up space on the sand – which is different to what we’re used to in Malta. It was a

breath of fresh air just having clear beaches that were well taken care of. Our favourite random beach stop was Le Morne Bay. There were only a few scattered tourists around so it was quiet and the water was perfect. Another day was spent at Blue Bay, which is home to a marine park that is a short boat ride away. You basically hop on a boat to get there, jump in and snorkel around, looking at rare coral and fish. The botanical gardens also made for a nice afternoon out, discovering unique plants, giant water lilies and massive trees. On the same day, we visited a beautifully restored colonial house, Chateau De Labourdonnais, which is now a museum on massive grounds which you can explore too.” Although the weather in Mauritius was very hot, it was the island’s winter season, so a few days were windy and rainy. “We avoided the beach on those days and opted for sightseeing. On one such day, we went to the Rhumerie de Chamarel for a short tour of the distillery. There are sugar cane fields everywhere you look in Mauritius, so it makes sense that they have loads of rum distilleries. We had a lovely lunch at their restaurant and then went rum tasting. It rained most of the day but it was still gorgeous. In Chamarel, there is also the site of the Seven Coloured Earths, a natural geological formation that’s very pretty to look at,” she continues. Ò

Seeing such majestic creatures swimming right next to the boat was amazing. “We also visited a local tea plantation, Bois Cheri. We’re big tea lovers so this was something we definitely had on our to-do list. The plantation itself is gorgeous to drive through, with deer running free next to a huge lake. You can view the lake from the café, while you’re sipping on a selection of different teas. We drove around to some other sites like Rochester Falls, which was quite hard to get to since it’s off the beaten track and is basically at the bottom of a massive potato plantation. It was worth the muddy walk down to the falls though!” they share. The newlyweds also spent a day out at sea, whale-watching. “We booked a boat trip on a private boat that does trips for small groups. We saw loads of sperm whales, dolphins and even turtles – seeing such majestic creatures swimming right next to the boat was amazing. We spent a whole day on a luxury boat with only a handful of other tourists. Lunch and drinks were included – lobster and champagne. It was pretty great!” The two spent the last four days in the north part of the island at an aptly named hotel called Paradise Cove. “We used it as a hub to get around the area. It was pretty close to the main city, Port Louis, so we went shopping there on one of the days. We also spent a full day at Gabriel Island, which is one of the smaller islands. It’s a gorgeous island which is mostly a nature reserve, so you can’t explore too much of it – but you can enjoy the beach and snorkel in the surrounding sea. It was great to relax and soak in the beautiful view,” Ben reminisces. Out of such a fun-filled trip, it’s hard to pick a highlight,

but Ben singles out the day that they spent at Casela Nature Park, a nature reserve where visitors can walk with lions. “This was pretty much a dream come true for me since I love cats! The lions are treated very well there, and are taken on walks along the grounds often to keep them active rather than just in enclosures,” she says. “Mauritius really was a paradise and it would be great to go back some day,” they agree. “They really do give special treatment to honeymooners and make sure you’re relaxed and happy. The weather is usually warm and sunny, and the locals are all very friendly and speak English and French, and it’s easy to get around with a car. Just make sure to pack some rain-proof shoes, a rain jacket and a sweater for the cool evenings if you visit during their winter!” n

Light, bright and happy Walking into this bright apartment in Ibragg is a true breath of fresh air. From the wonderful feeling of space to the expert play of colours, textures and finishes, it represents a contemporary aesthetic that instantly fills you with a serene and ‘happy’ feeling, as the owners themselves describe it. ooking at it now, it’s hard to imagine that when the owners first walked into this apartment in 2013, their impression wasn’t immediately positive. However, the spacious interior soon won them over. “We were looking for a penthouse rather than an apartment, but when we saw this one, we really liked the size. We wanted a big living area where we could host friends and family, and it definitely had that. It also had lots of natural light – we love the fact that even though it’s an apartment, it has windows on all four sides,” they say. At the time, the property was unfinished, with no bathrooms or internal doors – “it only had windows, but we didn’t like them so we changed them too!” They entrusted MXa with the project – with Malcolm Xuereb from the architecture team and project interiors headed by Jackie Attard in collaboration with Marie Cassar. “Our role was the full interior design and decorating of the apartment including the management

of works. This meant to firstly plan it out and oversee the progress, from structural right down to finishing and furnishing,” says interior designer Jackie. Making use of custom-made and carefully designed elements, the designers put a lot of emphasis on detail, and no corners were cut to pull off their vision. “Everything was well thought of, not just for the sake of being different, but also because there was an element of uniqueness which I felt the couple had and which we wished to translate into our design of their home. They have an eye for detail and quality, and I think that helped them to appreciate the design,” Jackie continues. One of the things that came first was also one that made the most difference: structural alterations. These included expanding the terrace, introducing a pantry in the kitchen and two walk-in wardrobes in the main bedroom. “The design makes use of the space in the most

intelligent way, and really makes the most of it,” the owners say. Jackie considers one of the most prominent elements to be the way in

which they managed to break the original layout by pushing the terrace into the living area. “By doing this, the terrace was doubled, and it gave the apartment a lovely external area – much larger than a lot of apartments. It feels like an extension of the living area from indoors but almost makes you feel like you are surrounded by a garden,” she maintains. Meanwhile, another intelligent alteration enabled them to split and enlarge the layout on the master bedroom quarters, which now includes the sleeping area, an en-suite bathroom and two separate his and hers walk-in-wardrobes.

Speaking of what they wanted most out of the space, the couple explain that primarily, they wanted a peaceful and calm ambiance in which they could relax, enough space to host family and friends, and lots of storage. “Our old apartment was very small, so we wanted to be able to have people over in this one,” they say. They entrusted the team at MXa with their needs, and the two worked seamlessly to achieve a good blend of the designers’ vision, which revolved around the clients’ need for practicality, functionality, and love of colour and quality. Ò

52 bliss JUNE 2017 § Home

“Their main considerations were good storage solutions, ample wardrobe space, and the use of semi-neutral backgrounds which would allow them to mix and match colours to their mood, the client being a lover of all things bright,” Jackie says. And the client agrees, maintaining, “I love the fact that they gave me the capacity to change things around if I want to – I can change the soft furnishings to give a new feel to the space since the fixed elements are neutral.” Asked how they would describe the décor, the couples’ first word is “happy”, yet, admitting to a penchant for bright colours like fuchsia, turquoise and lime green, they share that Jackie helped them

pare it down and soften the look with neutral colours. As for the designer, Jackie describes the space as contemporary chic. “We played a lot with textures, which I think is evident in most areas. In the main spaces, timber is set against matt lacquers, which are then accentuated by copper features. Mirrored ceilings give height to what seemed like a never-ending corridor, which is broken again with a timber slatted vertical feature which extends onto the ceiling and leads to a full length mirrored sliding door that neatly conceals a study. Meanwhile, one full side of the corridor is lined with a textured wall covering which guides you into the main areas of the home. We opted to use

flush doors throughout the corridors as they are unobtrusive and allow you to appreciate the other elements – aiding in optically breaking the normal monotonous corridor feel which one finds in many modern-day apartments,” she explains. This play on juxtaposing contrasting materials and finishes is also present in the bathrooms. With minimal use of ceramic tiles, the bathrooms in the apartment all have their own unique features. In the guest bathroom, treated concrete lines the walls and floors, leading to a raised timber area. “Both elements are matte and raw, contrasting with the use of a stylish chrome sensor mixer which stems from the ceiling like a droplet, leading the eye to the feature platinum sink,” Jackie continues. Ò

Home § JUNE 2017 bliss 55

A stylish chrome sensor mixer stems from the ceiling like a droplet, leading the eye to the feature platinum sink.

Similarly, the straw woven stone finish with co-ordinating flooring in the master en-suite contrasts beautifully with timber walls, which conceal neat storage and are highlighted with a full length mirror backing the custom-made travertine sink. This is flanked by two varying basin mixers on each end in polished chrome. Finally, in the bedrooms, “bespoke headboards of brushed matte velvet in taupe tones create a softness which contrasts with the timber floors and allows the clients to be flexible with colour. The curtains are delicate and simple at first glance, and fall in drops of varying tactile weights, yet their soft hues serve as the perfect backdrop to complement the rest of each room they encompass,” Jackie says. And with such attention to detail and so many beautifully designed spaces to choose from, it’s no surprise that the

owners are hard pressed to select their favourites. “We really like our en-suite and walk-ins, and we also love our son’s bedroom – especially the colours and fun light fixture. His bathroom is also

really colourful and fun. But if we had to choose, our favourite area would have to be the open kitchen, dining and living area. The colours in there have such a relaxing effect!” n

Capturing your special moments Timestamp: (noun) — a device that records the day and time of an occurrence. Timestamp Photography: freezing those special moments in life for one to revisit and appreciate. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This is my story – I put career aside to dedicate my time to my children, to watch them grow, and be part of the years that will shape their future. Creating Timestamp has allowed me to do something I love without compromising this. I love working with people. My clients always seem to enjoy their sessions, and some have left very kind words for all to see on my page. And it’s not just weddings that merit a nice photo session – perhaps an original photo frame for your desk at work, or collage in the living room, or an hour of fun with the kids in the outdoors to look back on. They are your photos. They are your memories. And I believe they should remain that way, which is why no one will find them on the internet unless you share them yourself. I will gladly show you my work as we meet and get to know each other over a cup of coffee, which I

really love doing! I invite you to be part of Timestamp’s story. I look forward to hearing from you, and meeting you, and hopefully capturing your special moments too! n

colour, texture and light

As the warmer weather sets in, we welcome the use of colour in every possible way, be it in our wardrobes or throughout our homes. Martina Said picks some of the top interior design trends for summer 2017.

Raw white

ÒChalky and bone-hued whites will be the shades of choice this season, particularly for decorative items, instead of the stark and sterile shade of white that reigns supreme for home walls and essential kitchen and bathroom furniture. Raw white is softer, earthier and appears more organic than brilliant white, and, coupled with a textured finish, it exudes a sense of beauty at a time of year when our homes are flooded with light.

Alchemy Fine Home

Mixed patterns

ÔEnthusiasts of minimalist home décor might have a bone to pick with this trend, but hold that thought. In 2016, the runways – which are often trend-setters for home décor – were filled with mixed patterned fashion garments; a trend which is now being reflected in interiors. There’s no better time than summer to fill your home with colour, so consider pairing paisley prints with geometric designs, or floral patterns with Aztec prints, which work wonderfully as soft furnishings throughout the home.

Marble finishes KESS InHouse

ÓMarble is loved for its elegant and luxe appearance, but often comes with a hefty price tag, which is why home owners are increasingly turning to faux marble finishes which are often indistinguishable from, and at times more reliable than their original counterparts. The use of faux finishes extends beyond marble – from faux wood to foliage, be it for indoor or outdoor décor, the sky’s the limit. Ò

Green

Texture

ÒTexture is being used by designers to tap into the human need to connect with objects and engage the sense of touch. This is being translated into material manipulation, such as pleats, folds and beautiful stitching for sofas, armchairs and headboards, as well as inspiring textures for light fixtures, wallpaper and brushed brass objects. You can achieve this trend at home by simply draping light linen throws for summer over a leather chair, and adding a few decorative pillows made with different textured fabrics.

Luxury Lane

ÓÒThanks to Pantone’s 2017 Colour of the Year, green has made a comeback in all manners, from fashion to wall paint and home interiors, The Family Love Tree selected by the global colour company for its refreshing and revitalising effects which is symbolic of new beginnings. A touch of green can take the form of a feature wall, table glasses, a living room floor rug or a lamp – whether you opt for a little or a lot of it within your home, it will brighten up a space in a heartbeat in preparation for the months ahead.

Nordstrom

Artisanal over DIY ÑIn recent years, DIY and upcycling trends were everywhere, being relatively fast, cheap and easy ways of reworking old items into ones that look brand new. Increasingly, however, designers are turning to artisanal home décor items rather than upcycled ones, which reflect a degree of craftsmanship and high level of skill, the likes of glass-blowing, porcelain, ceramics and woodworking. With no shortage of craftspeople on the island, a colourful artisanal object will brighten your home in an instant. Opt for vibrant hues of blue and yellow, or a preferred bright colour of your choice for summer, and voilà! n

Growing up together It was 4th September 1980 when Marina and Mark Hogg tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Ta’ Xbiex. They tell Jo Caruana all about their memories of that special day.

I

t’s Marina and Mark’s brilliant sense of humour that hits me as we chat – they’re both fun and bubbly, and it’s easy to see that their relationship has been built, in part, on their ability to laugh together. The couple had been together for three years when they decided to get married in 1980. They were very young at the time – Mark was 23 and Marina was 21, but they already knew that they wanted to build a life together. “I was studying in the UK back then, so only had holidays to spend in Malta,” Mark explains. “We knew we wouldn’t be able to live in Malta, so Marina moved to the UK and stayed with her sister and family until we were married.” Mark still recalls asking for his bride’s hand in marriage. “I was so nervous,” he smiles. “I was visiting for the Christmas holidays and only had a small window in which to ask Marina’s father for permission… and it was getting smaller and smaller! Before I knew it, it was my last evening here and I had to get on with it. I knew her father was in a meeting in his study before we all went for dinner, so my plan was to rush in there after he was done, hoping it would all turn out beautifully – like it does in the movies! As it turned out, by the time I got there he had already left the study and I could hear him fixing a drink in the kitchen – so I rushed in there and just blurted out that I wanted to marry his daughter.

Although it was a little slapdash, he was thrilled and, being of the Sicilian persuasion, a little emotional. Thankfully he said yes! The rest, as they say, is history.” As Marina and Mark were living separately in the UK in the run-up to their wedding, preparations back home went ahead without them. “My mother handled everything,” says Marina. “She went to Messina in Sicily to choose my wedding dress, and also organised the bridesmaids’ dresses for my little cousins. I trusted her completely because she has such good taste and, predictably, everything turned out perfectly.” When Marina did return, there was three weeks to go until the big day, and lots of loose ends to tie up. “Everything was done in a bit of a hurry – to the point that some people actually thought it was a shot-gun wedding,” she grins. “It wasn’t! We just needed to get back to the UK as my permit had run out, and I needed to be Mark’s wife to get back into the country to keep working.” The day itself went beautifully. Marina remembers walking down the road from her Ta’ Xbiex home to the church nearby, where the couple exchanged vows. The reception was held in the gardens of the Grand Hotel Verdala. “It was very pretty and beautifully lit,” Marina recalls. “It wasn’t a big wedding – with maybe 300 guests or so – so it was lovely to chat to everyone as we tried to take it all in.” They then went straight off on their honeymoon – three days in Gozo. “I’d just graduated so I didn’t have the funds for anything else!” Mark quips. “The wedding wrapped up at about midnight and we left in our ‘going away’ car which had been suitably decorated. Then, once round the corner, we hopped into a taxi which took us to the Gozo ferry for three days at the Ta’ Cenc, before we went back to the UK to start our lives together properly.” Looking back, both Marina and Mark say they pretty much grew up together. “We’ve had lots of ups and downs, from the challenges of being in the UK and a number of health scares, to the births of our three wonderful children. We were so young when we got married and both quite immature, but we found our way as a pair and stayed together very happily.” n
