Bell-shaped sleeves Statement sleeves have been trending for quite some time on both bridal and couture runways, and we love the bell shapes we’ve seen from key designers in 2018. Bold, broad sleeves can add a playful architectural twist to an otherwise understated or classic dress. Left to right: Rosa Clara, Rosa Clara, Demetrios

Watteau backs

Named after Antoine Watteau, the French Rococo artist who frequently painted women in this kind of gown, a Watteau back drapes fabric from a bride's shoulders to the floor, giving the illusion of a cape. The modern take on this trend gives brides who don't want a long veil or train something subtle yet dramatic to trail behind them down the aisle. Left to right: Studio St Patrick, Angel Sanchez

When it comes to bows this season, bigger is better, and we’re seeing them everywhere. ÒIn part thanks to Pantone’s 2018 colour of the year – Ultra Violet, this year’s floral trends are revolving around shades of purple. But not just any shades – think moody mauves mixed with lilac, old rose and dark purple. The vibe may be more autumn than spring, but we’re loving it.

Smaller bridal parties

ÒLarge bridal parties always seem like a lot of fun, adding to the celebratory vibe while getting ready with your besties. But smaller parties of no more than two to three members are taking over, as brides are opting for intimate groups rather than mass gatherings.

Kristina and  JK

CEREMONY LOCATION Castello Odes& WEDDING VENUE calchi on Lake Brac ciano, Lazi o MALTA CELE BRATION Barracud a Restaur ant, St Julian’s

A very rock ‘n’ roll wedding When singer, songwriter and performer Kristina Casolani and her lawyer husband JK Farrugia tied the knot, they danced the night away in a stunning Italian castle. Here the couple share the magic of their music-filled dream day with Jo Caruana. M a lta p h oto s b y T h e r ese D e b o n o I ta ly p h ot o s b y F r a mel i n es W edd i n g P h oto g r a p h e r s

K

ristina Casolani needs little introduction. The 34-year-old singer, songwriter and performer has been active on the local music scene since her teens, with hit songs including Traces, Get Out and The One. And Kristina met ‘the one’ nine years ago, when she was performing at a private party. “JK and I got chatting and just kept on chatting,” Kristina smiles. “And we’re still chatting all these years later! Our relationship has always been very full on. I’d never met someone I hadn’t got bored of, but JK changed all that; he always manages to keep me entertained.” Kristina admits that JK is more romantic than she is (although she has her moments) and this was evident in the

picture-perfect proposal that he planned. “It was absolutely wonderful,” the singer enthuses. “It was all arranged with the owner of the beautiful Astarte Suites where we were staying at in Santorini. JK asked to take over the pool area, and we had dinner there in a stunning gazebo with an incredible view. Dinner was delicious and, as I normally do, I turned down dessert – not knowing that JK had planned for the ring to be brought out at that point! The waiter insisted and, to my annoyance, I felt like I had to give in. Of course I soon figured everything out when the waiter returned and, with tears in his eyes and mine, JK popped the question. It was the perfect proposal.” Ò

Back in Malta, the couple started planning their wedding about a year in advance. They knew they wanted an intimate celebration with close family and friends, so they quickly opted for a destination wedding. “We also wanted to experience three days enjoying the best people in our lives. I didn’t want them to just spend our wedding day with us, but to have more time together before and after the big day, which is exactly what we did.” When it came to choosing the right location, Kristina and JK started their search at a weddings fair in Italy. “It was there that I saw this incredible picture of a tree overlooking a lake and I fell in love with it,” Kristina says. “I didn’t know where it was but I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I ran an online search with the

information I had and eventually hunted it down; it turned out to be Castello Odescalchi in Lake Bracciano, 30 minutes from Rome, where Tom Cruise, Eros Ramazzotti and Martin Scorsese tied the knot. The challenge was that the location was the only thing included, which meant we had to organise everything else. As an event organiser myself, I was excited to get stuck in.” So, from the invites to the caterers, Kristina started to plan the whole celebration. “There were so many things to think about,” she smiles. “The flip flop stand, sunglasses for guests, polaroid cameras, a tableau made out of drift wood showcasing the seating plan, stage, lights, sound, the bands and so on. It was a test, and JK helped with the communication and legal aspects as his Italian is better than mine, but we managed!” Ò

20 bliss march 2018 § Real Wedding

A few weeks before heading off on their Italian dream, the couple tied the knot legally in a small ceremony at Barracuda Restaurant, followed by dinner there. “That was just for close family, and it was a lovely experience as it eased us into our celebrations nicely,” she says. As the big day approached, the couple drove to Italy a few days in advance to relax with friends on the Amalfi Coast. “I thought JK was mad when he suggested driving! But he’s car-obsessed and he wanted to drive his Porsche to the wedding, so I went with it. It turned out to be an excellent idea as we had so much to transport for the wedding.” The couple arrived in Bracciano on the same day as their guests, some of whom had brought important elements of the wedding with them. “My dress arrived in a friend’s Range Rover,” Kristina giggles. “Boy was I glad to see it!” The bride loved her dress, and it was actually the first one she tried on. “I went to Alamango and really liked this particular

dress, but refused to think it could be ‘the one’ the first time around. So I kept looking, and tried dresses on in Spain, Italy and the UK – but didn’t like any quite

as much as that first one. In the end, I called Alamango to check if it was still available and was thrilled when it was, so I grabbed it.” Ò

I wanted to get a particular shot, so I jumped over a gate in my wedding dress.

Other important elements also came from Malta – including the suits by Bortex, souvenirs by Stephen Cordina, and Kristina’s hair and make-up team, Leanne Mallia and Ritianne Borg from Sleek Hair Salon, as well as singer Cecilia Zammit Endrich, who Kristina chose because of her angelic voice. Celebrations started the night before the wedding, when the couple hosted a dinner for their friends and family. “That’s when we started to zone out and relax,” Kristina says. “And we had a great time. In fact, I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning and woke up praying I wouldn’t have bags under my eyes for the whole day!

Thankfully the adrenaline kicked in.” In true ‘Kristina form’ the bride couldn’t head to the church before one final thing – a sound and lights check with the band. “This actually meant I was a little late – sorry JK!” she smiles. But Kristina did finally make it, and walked into the church to the sound of Everybody’s Free, "a song I always dreamt would feature in my future wedding when I was a child." The ceremony was beautiful, officiated by a lovely Italian priest Don Antonio who made everyone laugh and even spoke some English to entertain the guests. Ò

After that, the couple headed off to have their photos taken in the striking surrounds of the castle. “I had seen some particular shots of the location that I absolutely loved, but was told the area was now closed off by a gate. Unperturbed, I persuaded the photographer and JK to help me jump over the gate in my dress, so I got the

shots in the end! It was hilarious and even earned me the nickname of ‘sposa matta’ or crazy bride.” Looking back on the day, both Kristina and JK say they wouldn’t have changed a thing, and they especially loved the evening celebration, which started with a reception in the Secret Garden, followed by a sit-down dinner and a lively after-party in the Corte D'Onore. “The professionalism that went into ensuring that everything went perfectly was incredible, I was so impressed,” says the bride. Among the many highlights, Kristina looks back on an impromptu performance as one of her favourite moments. “Our DJ Tony Tony – who we

took with us from Malta – and JK planned that without my knowing. They played a song I loved and I went on stage to dance, and they handed me a microphone. It was funny, fun and completely spontaneous, which I absolutely adored.” Completing the experience, the couple and their guests danced the night away until 4:30 in the morning. “Our lovely priest was dancing too, which was another moment I will never forget,” Kristina grins. “I think it’s everyone’s dream to see their wedding take off, and we loved watching our guests have a good time. So much so that some of us ended up in the lake for a late night swim! It was a bit different but very us, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.” n

As fate would have it Rachel Damato and Darren Cauchi’s first encounter wasn’t the most romantic, but well over a decade later, as destiny intended, the couple exchanged vows in a wonderful wedding ceremony with their closest friends and family. ome enduring relationships begin with love at first sight, but the same cannot be said for accountant Rachel Damato, 28, and marine engineer Darren Cauchi, 29, who first met around 13 years ago as they practiced laser sailing together. “In those days, I couldn’t stand the sight of him, and he says he didn’t like me either, so it definitely wasn’t a case of love at first sight for either of us,” says Rachel. “Around six years later, our paths crossed again, this time through a common friend who is now one of my best friends, and who was also my witness – a role I would say suited her perfectly!” A few years into their relationship, Rachel says they both felt ready to take things to the next level, and while on a trip to Sicily, Darren made sure to do just that. “The proposal was an incredibly special moment, one of the best in my life so far. We were in Sicily, and one morning while in Taormina, Darren woke me up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise… in the rain,” she recounts. “As we stood in the cold piazza under a grey sky,

I turned to find him on one knee, asking if I would marry him. Darren often joked about it in the past, so my first reaction was to ask him if it was another joke! With the rush of emotions, before I managed to say ‘yes’, Darren told me ‘answer me because my jeans are getting wet!’” Soon after their engagement, the couple set the date for 11th November 2017. Rachel was in charge of the wedding preparations, while Darren took care of the honeymoon. “He was happy to leave the planning in my hands. Darren would have probably preferred a beach barbecue to celebrate our marriage, but I made it clear long ago that he could give up on that idea!” she quips. “Towards the end, planning did get pretty stressful. While everyone was telling me to relax and enjoy this special time, I still had plenty left to do. I used to run checklists by my married friends who gave me many helpful tips, and my mother was always ready to help – she definitely helped me manage my stress!” Ò

“For the ceremony, we chose Ta’ Giezu church in Valletta – we felt it had a peaceful feel to it, located just off the hustle and bustle of Valletta’s busy streets, and the steps leading down to the church overlooking the Grand Harbour make it particularly special. As for the venue, we chose Villa Arrigo because it offers excellent food, as well as good indoor and outdoor space, and it definitely ticked all the boxes.” Ò

Fr Michael really personalised the celebration – he made it funny, and made us feel comfortable and calm.

On the day, Rachel’s initial feeling upon waking up was relief – when she realised that it wasn’t raining. “What followed was the typical ‘Oh my God, I’m getting married today!’’,” she says. The bride went on to get ready with her bridal party, and had a great time getting

pampered. Make-up artist Schevon Camilleri kept their make-up soft and simple for the day, with stunning results. The ceremony, conducted by Fr Michael Bugeja, was one of the highlights. “We didn’t know Fr Michael before, but we got to know each other really well in the runup to the wedding. The ceremony was amazing. Fr Michael really personalised the celebration – he made it funny, and made us feel comfortable and calm, so it’s definitely a part of the day we will always remember.” The couple invited around 300 guests to their wedding, including friends and relatives from abroad. “Knowing that your friends and family travelled from abroad just to be there to celebrate with you on your wedding day is very touching,” she says. And while they opted for a largely traditional wedding, they did change the sequence of things at the reception. “Before the band started playing their dance set, the best men gave their speeches and we cut the cake, followed by our first dance straight after. After the band’s dance set, DJ Tony Tony got the after-party started. It was a setup that we felt worked well for us.” Ò

ÓThe couple gave their guests an ivory burlap bag filled with perlini. The elegant bags were adorned with a dainty floral decoration and tied with green ribbon.

Darren often joked about proposing in the past, so when he actually did, my first reaction was to ask him if it was another joke!

Having given due importance to the catering while scouting locations for their wedding day, it’s fair to say that good food was up there on the list for Rachel and Darren, and the catering at their wedding exceeded their expectations, handled from start to finish by Osborne Caterers. “We were happy to leave everything in their good hands. In our opinion, their food is second to none and always consistent. The staff were professional and passionate, and the management gave us excellent advice during the planning stage.” Looking stunning on her wedding day, Rachel was pretty clear about what dress she wanted from the get go, and she most certainly found it. “When I started visiting shops to try on dresses, I had two things in mind: I didn’t want a strapless gown as it doesn’t suit my figure, and I wanted something plain and simple. My mother and sister always accompanied me to fittings, but when I finally put on THE dress, I knew it was the one. It was a plain, boat-neck dress made with Mikado fabric, and featured a V-shaped back and detachable train.” Rachel and Darren’s wedding went off without a hitch, and while the day was full of incredible highlights, she recalls a few special moments in the run-up to the ceremony that she’ll never forget. “From the moment my father, bridesmaids and I climbed into the bridal car outside my parents’ house till the moment we reached the entrance of the church, was really special. Ò

We were all dressed and made-up, beaming with excitement, and we giggled and smiled all the way to the church. The few moments I had alone with my father outside the church before walking down the aisle were also touching – although I was extremely excited, it was also an emotional moment.” Looking back on the day, Rachel says the only thing she would have done differently is spend more time socialising with guests at the reception, especially those she hadn’t seen in a long time. Nonetheless, their vision for their wedding day certainly came true, and they’ll continue reliving fond memories for years to come, thanks to their moving wedding video by Troy

Video Productions and lovely photos by Mark Cassar. “We just wanted to enjoy the day to the full, surrounded by our friends and family. In reality, our wedding day definitely exceeded our expectations – we enjoyed every second of it from beginning to end.” Soon after the wedding, the couple jetted off on an incredible honeymoon, making stops in New Zealand, French Polynesia, and Singapore. “We had a fantastic time, enjoyed plenty of activities, and visited many beautiful places during our trip. We were also very lucky that our travels turned out so well, without any mishaps!” n

Bespoke dresses by Rosemarie Abela Rosemarie Abela fashion studio is founded and led by Rosemarie Abela, a 26-year-old fashion designer from Siggiewi, Malta.

S

tarting with the fine craftsmanship she learned from her mother, Rosemarie established the Rosemarie Abela brand in Malta after graduating from Polimoda fashion school in Florence in 2014. Once back from Florence, she found herself participating at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Malta for the first time, where she won the best upcoming designer award. Towards the end of 2014, the brand opened a small fashion studio in Qormi, which has established itself locally specialising in bespoke pieces. Rosemarie always tries to experiment with expression in relation to form, materials and textures. The brand aesthetic is brave, edgy and usually with a monochrome touch. The silhouette is always detailed and often bulky, favouring a colour palette of neutral core colours like black and white, with accent colours complementing the various collections. Incredibly delicate details and hand-painted elements are also part of the brand’s DNA. In 2017, through a collaboration between Malta Fashion Week and Serbia Fashion Week, Rosemarie Abela presented La Cupola collection in Serbia, as one of the international designers. She is in fact currently focusing on both local and international markets, with more to follow in 2018. “We work with different weddings-related customers

during the year. We can either style the wedding team from head-to-toe, or customers can come with an idea in mind which we will then work towards. Flavia’s wedding (pictured above) was a stylish celebration which we loved working on. The bride didn’t want a typical wedding dress, so we decided to go for a short wrap-over style with a low button-down back in ivory and white. It was styled with a red over-skirt design and sewn rose petals. Meanwhile, we went for a black and white style for the bridesmaids. “As for the bridesmaids in Jeanette’s wedding (pictured below), the bride came with a clear idea of what she wanted. My job in this case was to make her dream a reality. Both were very satisfied with all the items created,” says Rosemarie. Rosemarie Abela fashion studio is now offering exclusive fabrics from Italy to its clients, featuring some of the finest collections from Salvatore Ferragamo, Dior, Armani, Gentryportofino, Rick Owens and more. “We love weddings as much as the collections we create. The clients give you their trust and dream to make it happen. To me, this is one of the best parts of what I do!” the designer concludes. n T: 7933 5291; E: info@rosemarieabela.com; www.rosemarieabela.com

Your wedding at

Valletta Waterfront

Located close to central Valletta, Valletta Waterfront offers the perfect backdrop for your wedding, with flexible indoor and outdoor options. Eighteenth-century warehouses with their iconic coloured doors stretch along the water’s edge against a backdrop of historic fortifications and venues.

Under the Marquee: Located on the Valletta Waterfront quays, the marquee offers protective cover for up to 1,400 persons in a uniquely magical location.

Magazino Hall: Renowned for its

versatility, Magazino proudly displays its historical features from a glorious past. Built in 1727 to store oil for street lamps, it was later incorporated in the island’s first power station. Once inside, there is an impressive arched ceiling and the golden limestone glistens with the cast of soft lighting. An adjoining outdoor courtyard nestled among the historic bastions can be used as a breakout area or as a standalone venue. Magazino can comfortably accommodate 400 persons.

Old Power House: The original

building came about during the construction of Floriana’s fortifications in the 1700s. This building has taken many

turns in history, before being transformed and operating as Malta’s first electricity production plant. This building offers a fascinating layering of spaces and reflects the multiplicity of activities forming part of Malta’s Grand Harbour over the centuries. The rustic structure with high ceilings displays an interesting contrast between the old and the new.

Under the Stars: The possibilities are

endless – the open-air venue is an artistic blank canvas with the Grand Harbour as a backdrop on one side and the Valletta Waterfront buildings on the other. The location is breath-taking and lends itself to the typical Mediterranean al fresco lifestyle.

The Sagrestia Vault: Located directly on the Valletta Waterfront is a hidden treasure unknown to most – the Sagrestia Vault. Annexed to the 17thcentury vault is a small but beautifully detailed chapel dedicated to the Flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. In combination with the Sagrestia Vault, the Chapel can be utilised as a receiving area. It is truly a little gem on the Valletta Waterfront. The Promenade: A 275-metre strolling promenade offers the perfect staging with a variety of outlets, also with a private area, for more intimate weddings. Civil wedding ceremonies can be officiated in Magazino Hall, and also on the quays. Meanwhile religious weddings can be celebrated in the Chapel on the Valletta Waterfront. The Latin American

honeymoon diaries Cigars, Mayan traditions and Kit Kat? Maria Bartolo Zahra and Clive Bartolo look back at their memories of their honeymoon in Cuba and Mexico, and tell Rebecca Anastasi all about their once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A

fter tying the knot in a special celebration, Maria Bartolo Zahra and Clive Bartolo knew they had to make their honeymoon one to remember. “We had no particular priorities when choosing a destination. However, we thought that, like our wedding, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we deserved to travel out of Europe,” the couple explain. Maria always wanted to visit Mexico, whereas Clive was intrigued by the changes taking place in Cuba, so the couple decided to spend time in the two countries to discover the traditions and cultures which have made them legendary. The couple booked their trip through Royal Travel, who helped them plan everything within their budget, and headed off by flying through Paris to Havana in Cuba. They arrived in the city after a 10-hour flight and spent the first week exploring Cuba. In the first two days, they visited the Plaza de la Revolucion, Malecon and Tribuna Anti-Imperialista. They also explored Old Havana with a private tour guide and even had a salsa dance lesson in a colonial setting within the city centre. “Cuba, in itself, is a world apart,” Maria says, highlighting the prevalence of traditional customs as a way of life. “The beauty of Cuba lies in its culture, traditions, people and buildings, and we definitely recommend visiting before it becomes more westernised,” she says. The couple made the most of their trip in the country by renting a car and heading out onto the open road, where adventure ensued! “The driving in Cuba is an experience and a challenge in itself. We had a few funny moments trying to find our way out of Havana, as there was no signage and the locals don’t speak much English,”

the couple recount. “The state of the roads leaves much to be desired – there were many potholes in the autopista and on one occasion, while driving to Trinidad, the autopista came to a sudden end with a wall built across it!” One of the first trips they made was the three-hour journey to Viñales, a small town in the north of the country, situated in the province of Pinar del Rio. It was on this journey that they experienced, first-hand, the warmth of the Cubans. “On our way to Viñales, we were stopped by policemen. Obviously, we were a bit concerned. We were told that a bus full of workmen had stopped, and they needed people to drive them to Viñales. Even though we were sceptical, the man we took with us in our car was a godsend! We doubt we would have made it to Viñales if it weren’t for him! He even invited us into his home and gave us mango. In return, we gave him two Kit Kat chocolates for his children – sadly, he thought it was a Maltese chocolate as they had never seen it before!” The hospitality of the Cubans was present within the couple’s choice of accommodation – the casas particulares, rooms and apartments which are rented from local Cubans, which Maria describes as “an experience in themselves”. The couple’s stay in Viñales was one filled with nature, prehistory and cultural traditions. “Viñales is a beautiful, natural scenic valley and we had the opportunity to go horseback riding in the valley. We also went to a cigar factory and bought ourselves some local cigars! We spent two nights there, but before heading off for a seven-hour drive to Trinidad, we also stopped to marvel at a UNESCO World Heritage site – the prehistoric mural painted on the wall of a cliff,” they add. Ò

On the way to Trinidad – a town famed for its cobbled streets and perfectlypreserved Spanish colonial-era buildings – they also visited Cienfiegos, a city on the Southern coast of Cuba, and the infamous Bay of Pigs, a reminder of the crucial role the country played in 20th-century world history. And, Trinidad itself was as spectacular as the journey. “The main attractions are the square and the various natural parks situated in the Escambray mountains,” the couple recall. “We visited the Topes de Collantes, which is the third highest peak in the reserve, and also went on a two-hour hike and saw one of their waterfalls. Clive was determined to swim in the waterfalls at the bottom of the cliff, though getting to the bottom (and up!) was an arduous task,” they laugh. After a week in Cuba, the couple headed to Mexico, starting out in Mexico City. The first couple of days were a flurry of activity, with a private guide taking them to the main hotspots including the historical centre of the city, Zócalo, the Cathedral and the National Palace. The trip continued towards Teotihuacan, an archaeological complex, where they

visited the sunken square of Ciudadela, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Venue of the Dead, and the Sun and Moon Pyramids. But, it’s not only the capital which is full of archaeological wonders, historical sites and natural spectacles. The whole of Mexico has a lot to offer, and the couple were lucky enough to experience much of it. Their journey took them further south to Oaxaca, where they visited the Santo Domingo church – the best example of Mexican Baroque architecture in the country – and, then, to San Cristobal de las Casas. While there, they enjoyed a boat ride through Cañon del Sumidero, a deep natural canyon exhibiting a diversity of flora and fauna, and experienced Lagos de Montebello, a nature reserve consisting of several acres of pines, oaks and rain forest jungle. “These are a must see,” the couple enthuse. “This is where we had the opportunity to admire and enjoy many lakes and appreciate the varying hues of their waters,” the couple recall. They were also bowled over by Chiflón waterfall, a natural freefall of water surrounded by vegetation of reeds and palm groves, which they describe as “exuberant”. Ancient Mayan culture was also on display in the town of Chamula, a township close to San Cristobal de las Casas, in which the entire indigenous population still live according to the traditions of the past. The church of San Juan, situated in the heart of the township, was, they believe, the biggest surprise of the trip. “On entering the church, we could smell

incense and see colourful candles all over the place. Along the walls stood statues of Catholic saints, representing Mayan gods,” the couple recall. Clive goes on to describe some of the details. “The faces of these statues were painted in white to show that they are foreigners, and thus, alien, to their culture. People were sitting on the floor, covered in grass (representing their contact with nature), and they were making offerings, ranging from a simple, small candle to the slaughtering of an animal within the church. In fact, we came across one of these offerings (a chicken) and needless to say, Maria couldn’t watch this!” But the couple’s honeymoon also gave them a bit of down time. They topped it off with a four-night stay in the luxurious all-inclusive Secret Silversands Riviera in Cancun, lounging by the pool and indulging in cooking classes and tours in the various hotel kitchens. So, would they go back and do it all over again? “Yes, there is much more to see, particularly in Mexico. We would stay longer in Mexico City and – for those going for the first time – we would recommend staying in casas particulares, when in Cuba, rather than hotels. This gives you a true flavour of Cuban life,” the couple say with a smile. n

An eclectic space

with a wild heart

This converted character house in Qormi is a unique combination of the residents’ and architect’s styles, resulting in a home unlike any other – much like its unconventional inhabitants. Owners Martin Przepiorka and Darren Darmanin speak to Sarah Micallef about how they pulled it off. P h oto s b y M M K St u d i o

[The architect] convinced me to go for something more modern than I had envisioned, and I’m so happy she did!

W

alking into this unique space within Qormi’s village core, a typical Maltese corridor opens up to reveal something very different indeed. The main area spreads out in front of you, incorporating the living space, kitchen and library, which overlook an outdoor area that wraps around the side and back of the house. On the right, a bathroom is hidden behind a seamless door, and beyond this space, a spare bedroom sits, encased in dark walls and cabinetry alongside the kitchen. Upstairs comprises a washroom, gym, main bedroom, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. The décor is unique in that it’s a combination of the owners’ and MMK Studio architect Melissa’s styles, Martin tells me, explaining, “Melissa’s aesthetic is very modern and minimalistic, my style is quite eclectic and industrial, while Darren’s is classic and traditional, so the décor is a mix of the three.” Yet while a mixture of styles and preferences may be present within most projects, a unique consideration of this space is its other inhabitants: Martin and Darren’s two exotic cats. “Vlad is a serval cat, a proper wild cat,” Darren explains, as I spot the elegant cat lounging on one of the deckchairs by the pool, clearly content within his environment. “Maltese law relating to wild animals dictates a number of precautions we had to take when designing the house, including the outdoor space, height of the walls, CCTV around the house and special fencing, which I sourced from the US.” Their other cat, Savannah, is a mixture of wild and domestic cat. Ò

What is intriguing is that, while you may not notice upon first viewing, the entire space has been built and designed around the feline residents. “The entire house is cat-friendly. With everything we did, the first consideration was whether it was catfriendly. It’s why the outdoor space was so important, and one of the reasons we used materials like natural stone. We also incorporated hiding spaces for them, and had shelves made for them to jump on,” Martin explains, drawing my attention to the bespoke shelving in the living room, which is so attractive, I would certainly never have guessed it was designed with the cats in mind. The feline family members had other interesting impacts on the final outcome of the house too, Darren adds. “When we first brought Vlad over from Germany, we were required by law to build a cage measuring a huge 50sqm, just to bring him in. When we finished, we re-used the metal from the cage to build the shelving in the walk-in wardrobe.” Turning their attention to when they first purchased the property two years ago, I ask, what state was it in? “It was essentially a series of separate rooms,” Darren says, explaining that it would

During the renovation, the original structure was kept and restored, while a number of later additions were removed. The juxtaposition of the new concrete and old franka walls is part of what makes the finished product so unique. Speaking of their vision for the space, Martin is clearly the designoriented one of the two, while Darren took care of the project management. “I studied interior design, so for me, it was a space in which I could express myself,” Martin explains, adding that there needed to be compromises to incorporate their different styles. “I think the effect is quite interesting, and it’s not a typical Maltese house. To be honest, when I first saw the house, I was envisioning something along the lines of an old Italian village house, with lots of olive trees and shutters on the windows and typical Maltese

tiles, but then I thought, that wouldn’t be me. So we decided to mix it up. It’s not something you see every day,” he continues. The style of the house was also impacted by their architect, Melissa. “When I started looking at her work, I was amazed,” Martin says, admitting, “she convinced me to go for something more modern than I had envisioned, and I’m so happy she did! I love the mixture between the old and new.” As for inspiration from particular houses or design aesthetics, Martin reveals that he’s a fan of the Nordic and Scandinavian style, as well as industrial New York lofts. “These influences come through in different areas, like the stairs, glass and metal beams – we wanted to expose everything. We also incorporated second-hand items, which contribute to the effect,” he continues, referring to a workbench in the living area. “That came from an old factory. It was so heavy, it needed six of us to bring it in! Ò

We tried to incorporate items that you can’t just go into a shop and buy,” he says. The process took two years to complete, and was one the couple describe as a bit of a nightmare. “Dealing with the workers and the dramas when things went wrong was tough,” says Darren, recalling one such hiccup. “When we ordered the floors, we were sent the first batch – a white stone – which were laid, but when we received the second batch, the colour was totally different – they were yellow and red!” The pair also ordered many items from different countries, and had them shipped to Malta. “I really wanted bronze or copper mixers, and searched everywhere locally but couldn’t find what I wanted, so we decided to order them from abroad,” Martin explains, adding that all the bulbs and switches are also from the UK. And while the process was difficult, particularly when it came to coordinating between so many different companies and people, the couple agree that it was worth it. Still, when faced with

the trickiest of questions, ‘would you do it all again?’ their views are hilariously different. “If you had to ask me if I’d do another renovation project, I’d probably say yes, but Darren would say no,” laughs Martin, and Darren quickly confirms this. “I dealt with the workers on a daily basis, and had to deal with the problems! I don’t understand how people can buy a house, finish and re-sell it,” he jokes, as Martin smiles, “actually, that’s something I’d love to do!” Swiftly changing tack, I ask – what’s their favourite part of the house, now that it’s finished? “Mine is the kitchen,” says Darren, “I love cooking desserts in it.” Martin laughs at this, affirming, “since we’ve had the kitchen, he’s started to bake! And I have to say, the crème brûlée he made is the best I’ve ever had… and I didn’t even know he could cook!” For Martin, meanwhile, the kitchen is also special, particularly because Darren’s father made it, but if he had to choose, it would be the pool. “Let’s face it, I’m from Poland – we don’t have

nice weather or pools, so it’s something special for me! Because Qormi is in the middle of the island, I really wanted to have a pool. I don’t drive, so getting to the beach can be a bit of a hassle. It’s not the biggest pool, but it’s comfortable. It’s great to be able to jump into the pool after work on a hot day,” he says, as he looks out at Vlad, who clearly agrees. n

The best

bedroom trends It’s 2018 and all eyes are on one particular room in the house: your bedroom. Jo Caruana discovers the must-have trends for designing your go-to haven.

For some people it’s the kitchen; for others the living room. But for me, the room I always wanted to get right was my bedroom – a place I could retire to at the end of a busy day or the spot I would while away the hours in on lazy Sunday mornings. So, if you’re anything like me, your bedroom will be top of the list of rooms you want to get just right – whether you’re moving into a new home or making-over your current one. Either way, here are the top trends to make your bedroom stand out this year.

Four-poster beds

ÓIf you have the space to make a statement, nothing says glamour quite like a four-poster bed. From wrought-iron to antique wood, and from classic to modern, four-poster beds effortlessly transport your space into a bygone era. And, if you want to accentuate a sense of the dramatic, add curtains. Can you imagine how much fun it will be to throw them open each morning?

Neutral tones ÓÒFor a while, many people were choosing to decorate their bedroom with a pop of colour – and that’s great. But the very latest trends mark a return to more zen-like spaces, where subtle shades like beige, grey and white work together to create a feel-good, welcoming ambience. If you’re worried your bedroom will look too bland, add interest through different textures, like lace, faux fur and velvet.

Anthropologie.com

ÑAs an alternative, if you’d like a room with a bit more colour, pink is one of the biggest hues this season. But if the idea of shocking pink makes you cringe, worry not, as 2018’s pink is far more demure and grown up – we’re thinking more along the lines of crepe, lemonade, flamingo and blush. These pair beautifully with other pastels too, helping to extend your colour palette a little bit wider. Ò

Statement rugs

ÒWhether you’re stepping out of bed onto a parquet, tiled or hard-wood floor, a rug will make all the difference to your comfort (and the shock you get when you finally touch down!) While neutral colours can blend in better, statement rugs stand out for all the right reasons, and could even introduce a new hue to your overall scheme.

Natural wood

ÖIf you’re creating a space that feels natural, it makes sense to include wood in your design – and there are all sorts of ways to do this. From a natural wood bedframe to natural wood floors, leaving your wood exposed means it will be soft to the touch, and could even add warmth to your final effect. And if you don’t choose exposed wood for your main bedroom features, simple accessories – like these natural wood apple crate shelves – could make for a beautiful finishing touch.

The accent wall

ÔEven if you opt for a simple style overall, you could choose to include an accent wall in your bedroom. Sometimes achieved with striking wallpaper, other times crafted using large lettering, lighting or even an array of pictures, an accent wall draws the eye to it and presents an opportunity for you to really showcase your personality.

Bohemian bedroom

ÔFinally, for something completely different, why not give your bedroom a bohemian twist? Typified by light colours and an airy feel, a bohemian bedroom is really brought to life in your styling choices – including contrasting colours and textures, rustic linen and artwork, and items collected on your travels. The result could turn out to be absolutely beautiful and truly unique, and can even be created on a budget. n

One dance with that girl Veteran broadcaster Charles Saliba and his wife Marion share memories of their courtship and wedding day with Marie-Claire Grima.

I

t was a typical evening at the Teens and Twenties Talent Trust (4Ts) dance in St Joseph School in Blata l-Bajda in 1970. Prospects seemed dim, and 18-year-old Charles Saliba and his friends were getting ready to go to another party, when suddenly, a dazzling girl in a white tunic caught Charles’s eye. “I told my friends to wait for me, I just want one dance with that girl. Marion and I started talking, and soon enough, I told them to go on without me.” Charles and Marion agreed to meet the following Saturday at the Ferries in Sliema, at six o’clock. Fifteen minutes, then half an hour passed, and Marion was nowhere to be seen. “I thought I had been stood up, and I was about to leave. But then I bumped into my friend John Critien (now the Knight Resident at Fort St Angelo), and we stopped to chat. A few minutes later, I saw her coming.” “I had missed the bus,” Marion grins sheepishly. The pair dated for four years before getting engaged in 1974 – they married two years later on 17th June 1976. They were married in Charles’ hometown parish of Marsa, on the feast of Corpus Christi, so the church was decked out in full splendour. The bride wore a gown of her own design. “I designed a Victorian-style dress, and Charles’ mother sewed it for me,” says Marion. Although she looked radiant, the bride had been beset by a series of minor disasters – not only had she hated the way the hairdresser had styled her hair, and had to have it washed and re-done at home, but the zip on her dress broke and she had to be quickly sewn into the dress. At the church, once she was out of the car, her veil caught on the car door and nearly slipped off. On the other hand, the groom was the picture of calm. “An hour before the wedding, I was still watching the UEFA Euro play-off between Yugoslavia and West Germany!” says Charles, who is still an avid football fan. The wedding reception was held at The Palms in St Julian’s; it wasn’t their first choice, but it turned out to be a fortuitous one. “We had initially wanted to book Villa Rosa for the 5th June, but since the beauty of that venue lies in its outdoor gardens, one of our witnesses, Vanni Ganado, pointed out that it might be windy,” says Charles. “It was something that hadn’t even

Be patient and bear with each other.

occurred to us, but I worried about it, so we decided to move the date and book another venue. Wouldn’t you know it – on the 5th, the heavens broke – I had never seen a flood like it in my life.” The wedding was attended by hundreds of guests – Charles was already broadcasting on the radio, as well as the only television station at the time, Xandir Malta – including future President Anton Buttigieg. “There were so many people to greet, we didn’t have time to eat anything,” says Marion. “After the wedding, the caterers gave us a packed bag full of food, and we just sat on the bed at the hotel and stuffed our faces,” adds Charles, smiling. “Luckily, back then, a wedding would be over by 11pm – today they last an eternity!” After 42 years of marriage, two children and four grandchildren, the two know that one of the fundamentals to a lasting marriage is loving your partner unconditionally, despite their shortcomings. “You have a long time to get used to your partner’s character,” says Marion. “Be patient and bear with each other.” n
