othing gets in the way of a good mood on a bright summer’s day – not even a traffic jam or the scorching heat (or maybe just a little). As islanders, the Maltese appear calmer and more laid-back during the summer, emerging from months of near-hibernation in winter, ready to hit beaches, bars and any outdoorsy activities going on between June and September. So, if you’re holidaying on the Maltese islands over the coming months, you’re in for a treat. The cover story that starts

on page 17 singles out the top 10 activities to enjoy during a summer holiday in Malta – from attending a village feast, to hiking around the tiny (yes, tinier than Malta) island of Comino, and watching the sun set on a beautiful sandy beach, among others. And speaking of beaches, turn to page 41 for a detailed review of some of the best beaches across the islands, chosen for their outstanding features, be they clear waters, excellent facilities or accessibility. Summer Fun The Top 10

From the sea to the sky, if you want to inject some brilliant, adventure-filled fun into your holiday in Malta, then Jo Caruana’s top 10 picks will certainly keep you entertained.

u Enjoy the waves The best way to see Malta really is from the sea, and what better way than during an adrenaline-packed water sport activity? Water sports are practiced at most public and private beaches, and there’s all sorts to choose from, including snorkelling, scuba diving, parasailing and jet skiing. Alternatively, take to the waves on the vessel of your choice – whether a self-drive speedboat or something more luxurious. There’s nothing better than a day spent exploring Malta’s coast and the beautiful bays

that can only be accessed from the sea. Whatever you decide, be sure to pick a reputable supplier and take their advice for safely enjoying the sport of your choice – then just relish the wind in your hair and the buzz of being out at sea.

v Attend a festa Village feasts are the perfect representation of Maltese spirit – loud, vibrant events that celebrate the passion of each community. These feasts take place throughout the year but are especially prevalent in Photo: Samson Leguesse - viewingmalta.com

the summer, when multiple feasts take place every weekend. This is a religious event, so festivities focus around the church – from beautiful decorations to processions showcasing the statue of the saint in question. Other highlights include the lively band marches, the party atmosphere and, of course, the brilliant firework displays that light up the skies on the final night. ➜ 17

Visitors are very welcome and locals often love having the chance to explain why their saint is the absolute best one on the island.

w Watch the sun

set on the beach There really is no spot more beautiful than a Maltese beach at sunset – it’s the perfect place to while away a few hours with a picnic and a bottle of wine. One of the best beaches for this purpose is Għajn Tuffieħa, which promises gorgeous views of the sun setting over the cliffs below. This beach is pretty busy during the day but it calms down in the evening, so we recommend heading over at about 6pm to secure your spot, as you wait for the evening sky’s show to begin! Naturally, sunset makes way for a star-filled night sky, which is also beautiful.

x Swim with dolphins If you’ve always dreamt of swimming with dolphins, this is your chance. There’s a lively programme to be enjoyed at the Mediterraneo Marine Park in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, from sea lion and parrot shows to the main attraction, the dolphin show, and the chance to swim

with the dolphins too. The reptile house and bird-and-turtle feeding programmes are also worth a visit!

y Hop aboard a kayak If you don’t like the idea of a speedboat or yacht, then you may be more at home aboard a kayak or canoe. The pace may be slower, but the benefits definitely lie in the fact that you can really get upPhoto: viewingmalta.com

close-and-personal with the coast – enjoying the flora and fauna that lives right at the water’s edge. Local companies organise everything from day trips to full kayaking holidays and courses, enabling you to get familiar with the sport during your trip here. Gozo, in particular, lends itself brilliantly to kayaking, and Ħondoq Bay would be the perfect place to give it a go. ➜

at sea, making them even more impressive. It’s recommended to book a tour or join a club in both instances, as there are important safety elements to bear in mind. That said, both sports can be enjoyed by all levels and fitness abilities, and the views are absolutely astonishing.

{ Attend a music festival The Maltese absolutely love music and will jump at any opportunity for a party. As a result, lots of music events take place throughout the summer, with highlights like Malta Music Week (a week-long series of events at a variety of venues) and the subsequent Isle of MTV (to be held on 27th June), which is now in its 11th year and has recently attracted big names such as Wiz Khalifa, Nicole Sherzinger, Jessie J, Will.i.am, Rita Ora, Flo Rida and Snoop Dogg. Other music festivals that will make up the summer line-up include the Beland Festival, the Sunscape festival and the Malta Jazz Festival, all in July, as well as the alternative Sickfest in August. | Hike around Comino The gorgeous, almostuninhabited island of Comino (which is the smallest of the main Maltese islands) is most well-known for its beautiful Blue Lagoon. It tends to get very busy during the summer months, but it’s still worth making the trip here if you enjoy hiking. The island is largely untouched, and a morning hike will give you the chance to explore this unchartered terrain – culminating in a swim in lesser-known Santa Marija Bay on the other side of the island.

} Segway your way If you like being on two wheels, 22

then segwaying may be for you. Tours are organised to various parts of the country for both individual and group travellers. Our favourite is the Dingli tour, which starts in Buskett and then takes in the beautiful views along the cliffs. Other popular tours include ones around Valletta and the Three Cities, which combine lots of historic-site-spotting with all the fun of whizzing around.

~ Get your wings If none of the above appeal, then you may want to take a completely different route – by setting your expectations sky-high. Malta Flying provides ways for you to get your wings, whether you want to take a flight with a pilot to see the islands from overhead, or if you actually want to get professional aviation training. This will definitely give you a 360-degree view of what the Maltese islands have to offer!

NEWS

TRENDING: MALTA Marie-Claire Grima rounds up the latest digest of news stories about the Maltese islands.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC RANKS MALTA BEST PLACE TO VISIT FOR CULTURE IN 2017 National Geographic Traveler magazine has ranked Malta as the best place to visit for culture in 2017. “This Mediterranean nation is packed with stunning beaches, historic towns, and ancient archaeology. Eager for its turn on the world stage, this tiny island is embracing a reboot while holding fast to a formidable heritage,” the magazine enthused in a recent edition. It went on to mention Malta’s three world heritage sites, including Valletta, saying it had “pivoted toward the future with the inauguration of architect Renzo Piano’s reimagining of Valletta’s old City Gate, Parliament building, and Opera House.” VALLETTA SCORES MORE HOURS OF SUNSHINE THAN ANY OTHER EUROPEAN CITY And speaking of Valletta, Malta’s capital has been named the sunniest city in Europe for the second year in a row, enjoying an average of 2,957 hours of sunshine in 2016. According to weather forecasting website

Current Results, Valletta beat out other ‘sunshiny’ cities including top four Marseilles, Lisbon, Madrid and Athens. Meanwhile, the four dullest cities were London, Birmingham, Reykjavik, and – with just 1,203 hours of sunshine last year – Glasgow.

COMINO NAMED ONE OF THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE PLACES IN THE WORLD Heading off on a ferry to Comino? Don’t forget to have your camera at the ready. The island, which is one of the tiniest in the Maltese archipelago, has been named one of the most ‘Instagrammable’ places in the world, thanks to its flawless Blue Lagoon. In a recent survey of British holidaymakers who were asked about what they considered to be the most iconic Instagram holiday photos, the Blue Lagoon beat the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Central Park in New York and even Iceland’s Northern Lights! ➜ 25

NEWS VALLETTA GETS ITS VERY OWN BOARD GAME Whether you’re a history buff or a master strategist, you’re bound to love ‘Valletta’, a new board game where players take on the role of the builders who constructed the city – they have to prove their skills but at the same time stay in the good books of the city’s chief architect and the Order of the Knights of St John. It’s a family-friendly game that promises excitement and intrigue for players of all ages. The board game was created by Munich-based company Hans im Glück, in collaboration

with the Malta Tourism Authority. It’s no surprise then that the number of German holidaymakers visiting Malta in the last 12 months has risen by almost a third.

12 MALTESE BEACHES WIN BLUE FLAG STATUS A record number of Maltese beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag this year, with 12 beaches winning the prestigious honour. The Blue Flag is a guarantee to visitors that the beach has excellent facilities, is litter-free and has achieved a high standard of water quality. Some of the most popular beaches which won the award include Riviera Bay in Għajn Tuffieħa, Mellieħa Bay in Mellieħa, Fond Għadir in Sliema and Ramla Bay in Gozo. The Blue Flag awards are run by independent international body the Foundation for Environmental Education, and administered in Malta by Nature Trust Malta. To read more about the best beaches in Malta and Gozo, turn to page 41. MALTESE PEOPLE VOTED THE SECONDFRIENDLIEST IN THE WORLD Maltese folk have been voted the second friendliest people in the world, right behind the Taiwanese in first place. Malta ranked well ahead of New Zealand, Australia, Costa Rica and Austria in the survey by Expat Insider, which described Malta as a great place for ‘fun in the sun’. “It is first in terms of settling down, getting used to the local culture, and making new friends,” Expat Insider continued. “Over four in 10 expats say it is very easy to settle down in Malta, well over twice the global average. Three quarters of expats say they couldn’t be more pleased with it, and not a single respondent has something negative to say.” ➜ Mellieħa Bay - Photo: Clive Vella - viewingmalta.com

NEWS THE MANOEL THEATRE CLOSES DOWN FOR SEVEN MONTHS Bad news for theatre enthusiasts – Valletta’s historic Manoel Theatre has closed its doors to performances and tours for seven months, from April to December of this year, while a climate-control system is installed. Teatru Manoel, one of the oldest surviving theatres in Europe, was built in the heart of Valletta in 1731 by Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, a Grandmaster of the Knights of St John for ‘the honest recreation of the people’. CNN Travel recently named it as one of the most spectacular theatres in the world. Tours of the theatre will recommence in December 2017. RECORD NUMBER OF PASSENGERS LAND AT MIA IN APRIL More than half a million people passed through Malta International Airport in April, a rise of more than 26 per cent on the same month last year. Airport bosses said they welcomed a total of 530,576 passengers – the highest number ever recorded in the month of April. The day before Good Friday saw 23,400 passengers arrive in

Manoel Theatre - Photo: viewingmalta.com

Malta, making it the busiest day of the year so far. “April’s strong performance partly stemmed from the Easter holiday effect, together with the start of new operations and the extension of certain winter routes into the summer period,” an airport spokesperson said. While Malta attracts tourists from all over the world, Britain remains its biggest tourism market, followed by Italy, Germany, France, and Belgium.

MALTA NAMED SAFEST HOLIDAY SPOT Malta is one of the safest places to go on holiday this summer, according to the latest official travel advice from the British government. The Foreign Office in London described Malta as ‘very safe’ with crime against tourists being ‘rare’ and a ‘low threat’ of terrorism. However, the same travel advice is rather less complimentary about Maltese roads and drivers.

20-22 july 2017

The programme of the 27th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival features an incredible, star-studded line-up spread over three days and throughout the capital, Valletta. Festival Artistic Director Sandro Zerafa explains that this year’s festival is striving to make jazz as accessible as possible, and will be branching out to Valletta’s streets, spreading its wings beyond Ta’ Liesse, to inject creative energy in Malta’s growing jazz scene in preparation for Valletta 2018. “The impressive line-up ranges from Nicholas Payton’s

blend of dialects of Afro-descent to Munir Hossn’s homage to the Brazilian north-eastern heritage and Al di Meola’s latin-infused fusion. The festival strives in its mission to promote this great art form in all its diversity and to stimulate the local scene through various outreach initiatives – street jam sessions, collaborations with international musicians, masterclasses and free concerts.” The festival, like previous years, will include some of the most renowned jazz artistes such as Al di Meola, Antonio Sanchez and Mark Guiliana. Di Meola, who last performed in Malta in 2012 and will close off this year’s festival, was discovered by renowned jazz artist Chick Corea when he was 19 years old. This year at Ta’ Liesse, apart from his music, he will also perform music from The Beatles and Piazzolla. Apart from being the drummer in Pat Metheny’s group, Antonio Sanchez is also well-known for the score he composed and performed for the film ‘Birdman’, for which he won a Grammy and was nominated for a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Guiliana, the drummer in David Bowie’s last album ‘Blackstar’, will play at Ta’ Liesse on Friday with his jazz quartet. The New York Times recognised Guiliana as “a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed”. ➜

CULTURE Friday night will be closed off by Nicholas Payton, whose original blend of hip-hop, spoken word, New Orleans styles and contemporary jazz will be one of the highlights of this year’s festival. The Chicago Tribune reported that “no descriptive label or category could be affixed to Payton’s solos, which were as brashly original as they were technically imposing.” The line-up for Thursday’s free concerts, supported by Valletta 2018 (the entity responsible for the European Capital of Culture programme in Malta), consists of one of Europe’s star jazz guitarists, Romain Pilon and multiinstrumentalist Munir Hossn. Pilon will perform with special guest Walter Smith III, one of the current leading saxophone players.

CULTURE

Villa Bologna guided tours of the house and garden Villa Bologna is a fine example of a noble Baroque residence. It is as expansive as it is grand, and still retains the feeling of a much-loved family home.

The villa was built in 1745 by Fabrizio Grech as a wedding present for his daughter Maria Theresa on the occasion of her marriage to Nicolas Perdicomati di Bologna. Grech was senior advisor or ‘Uditore’ to Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, and therefore it was built in the vicinity of San Anton Palace in Attard. The house has been occupied by many notable family members, including Lord Strickland who was Prime Minister of Malta in the 1920s and his daughter Mabel Strickland, with whom he founded The Times of Malta. His second wife Lady Margaret Strickland was also an important figure who founded the Phoenicia Hotel and was responsible for the

landscaping of the new gardens behind the villa. Jasper de Trafford, current owner and great-grandson of Lord Strickland has undertaken extensive restorations of the house and gardens, and is bringing the estate back to its former splendour. The original Baroque garden has been restored and visitors can admire the Large Nympheum and Small Nympheum, built in the Italian style. The Dolphin Fountain and sunken pond were designed in the 1920s and lead on to the vegetable garden and citrus orchard. Meeting at the Villa Bologna Shop next to San Anton Palace, the tour begins at the entrance to the villa and takes in the main

rooms of the house with important antiques and family paintings. Each room has a story to tell about life through the centuries as lived by generations of the family. The tour continues through the gardens, citrus groves and the World War II bomb shelter. Before leaving, there is an opportunity to see the pottery workshop and to browse the well-stocked gift shop. Tours are given from Monday to Friday at 10am. Admission: Adults €10, concessions €8, children under 14 free. Entrance is through the gift shop. 7,000 years of history brought to life

Located in Malta’s capital city, Valletta, housed within what was once the Sacra Infermeria of the Knights of Malta, is The Malta Experience. New visitor facilities at the

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum After months of major conservation works, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum re-opened its doors to the public in mid May. These works reviewed and redesigned the environmental management of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and also included new visitor facilities. This project was supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants 2009-2014. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground prehistoric cemetery used from around 4000BC to 2500BC, is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world. It has been recognised by UNESCO as a site that “bears unique testimony to a civilization which has disappeared”. Through the EEA Grants 2009-2014 Heritage Malta conducted studies to assess the current condition of the site in terms of conservation, geology and organic residues. Another important element of the project involved the installation of a micro-climate management system, with both passive and active control measures.

Tickets for tours in the underground prehistoric cemetery held every hour are available online on https:// booking.heritagemalta.org while a total of 20 tickets daily are available for the following day from Fort St Elmo and from the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. Thanks to new technology, visitors who do not manage to book a ticket for the regular tour still have the opportunity to explore this prehistoric site through a new immersive experience installed in the redesigned interpretation centre. 70 tickets for this audio-visual show are available daily, and these can be booked through the same website.

From crystal waters to soft red sand

here are Malta’s Top 10 beaches

As the sun beats down in the bright blue sky, locals and tourists alike flock to Malta’s beaches to cool off. Not sure where to go? Featuring both sandy and rocky beach options to suit all tastes, Sarah Micallef reveals her top 10 beaches on the Maltese islands, in no particular order. ARMIER BAY, MELLIEĦA Armier Bay, in the north of Malta, is actually made up of two sandy beaches – the main known simply as Armier, and its little sister, affectionately if not imaginatively known as Little Armier. Facing Blue Lagoon Bay in Comino, both beaches offer beautiful crystal blue waters, and come with all the main amenities nearby, including food and drink options, umbrella and sunbed rentals, water sports Ramla Bay - Photo: viewingmalta.com

and public conveniences. Unlike neighbouring Mellieħa Bay, Armier boasts the added benefit of peace and quiet – surrounded as it is by the wooded area in Mellieħa known as l-Aħrax, which does its bit to eliminate the noise from traffic to and from Ċirkewwa.

RAMLA BAY, LIMITS OF XAGĦRA, GOZO If you’re looking for a sandy beach over on the sister isle, Ramla Bay

– Gozo’s largest sandy bay – is certainly one to visit. Known as Ramla l-Ħamra (Red Sand) thanks to the deep, reddish-gold hue of the sand here, this picturesque bay is surrounded by countryside and sheltered below terraced hills leading up to the mythical Calypso’s Cave. Food and drink options come in the form of several snack bars and cafés, and amenities include sunbed and umbrella rental, water sports and public conveniences just off the beach. The bay also comes with its own landmark – a statue of Virgin Mary, which was erected in the middle of the bay in 1881 and still stands today. The water is clear and clean, and the beach benefits from lifeguard services in the summer months. ➜ 41

LIFESTYLE GĦAR LAPSI, SIĠĠIEWI Rocky beach lovers will delight in this little bay with great views of Filfla, just a short drive from the popular Blue Grotto in Żurrieq. The shoreline here forms a natural swimming pool, with crystalclear waters that are perfect for snorkelling. Għar Lapsi Cave leads out into the deep open sea, and is popular among divers and underwater photographers, boasting rich marine life and excellent visibility. Grab a snack and a beer at the tiny restaurant on the way down to the beach if you’re hungry, or for a more refined dining experience (although still refreshingly homey), the restaurant at the top of the hill is a great option with views across the Med. ĠNEJNA BAY, MĠARR Less frequented than neighbouring beaches Riviera Bay and Golden Bay, the sandy and scenic Ġnejna beach is famous for its clay slopes

Għar Lapsi - Photo: viewingmalta.com

and limestone cliffs, as well as being home to one of Malta’s few remaining perennial freshwater springs, which runs through the valley in which it is located. The water here is ideal for families with children, boasting shallow sea inland, which gradually gets deeper the further out you go. All manner of water sports options are available here, from waterskiing and wakeboarding to the banana boat, along with a number of kiosks if you’re feeling peckish, as well as public amenities. The

neighbouring farming village of Mġarr is a highlight in itself while you’re in the area. Located just a kilometre away – it’s famous for its seasonal strawberries and watermelons, as well as being the place to go for an authentic fenkata (rabbit-based meal).

ĦONDOQ IR-RUMMIEN, QALA, GOZO What this little beach lacks in size it makes up for in sheer beauty. Popular among Gozitans, Maltese day-trippers and tourists alike, this little beach is mainly sandy, but has a few rocky areas which are better traversed with shoes on. The water here is a bright azure colour, making it popular with divers and snorkelers, who flock here to experience a series of small caves at water level. And once you work up an appetite after all the swimming, a few food and drinks kiosks, and a small café nearby offer up several options, with public amenities also available for beach-goers. MELLIEĦA BAY, MELLIEĦA Easily one of Malta’s most popular beaches, Mellieħa Bay includes Għadira Bay – the largest sandy beach on the island which boasts a Blue Flag rating. ➜

LIFESTYLE

Little Armier Bay - Photo: Jürgen Scicluna - viewingmalta.com

Among its many attributes, Mellieħa Bay is incredibly family-friendly, boasting little to no currents and many metres of shallow water before the sea starts getting deep, making it ideal for small children. Umbrella and sunbed rentals, several food and drink kiosks, as well as a variety of water sports are also available here. Meanwhile, the downsides centre on just how popular this beach is – in the summer months, parking can be a little difficult if you’re coming in your own car, and the beach gets quite densely populated too, so we recommend going early to bag yourself a good spot!

Peter's Pool - Photo: viewingmalta.com

PARADISE BAY, ĊIRKEWWA Another Blue Flag beach, Paradise Bay is certainly the best beach on Malta’s northern hammerhead peninsula (close to the Gozo ferry). Isolated and picturesque, this beach is located on the way to the Gozo terminal, and boasts rock formations which provide a magnificent view and ideal backdrop to one of the island’s best beaches. It’s accessible via a flight of steps that take you down to the bay, but before that, you’ll find a thatched lido that serves up some great food and colourful cocktails to keep you going on

your beach day. The sand below is golden yellow and the water a clear blue, so it’s no wonder this little beach gets quite popular in summer. There are also several water sports options, umbrella and sunbed hire, and public amenities.

RIVIERA BAY, MĠARR Apart from being hands down the prettiest place to watch sunset in Malta, Riviera Bay (also known as Għajn Tuffieħa) is surrounded by rugged terrain, which makes it a popular and picturesque trekking spot. The water at this Blue Flag beach starts out shallow, but do be wary of underwater currents, which can be quite strong despite the sea looking calm. A little outward from the shore, high waves make it a popular spot for surfers. The climb down towards the beach is via a long flight of steps, which can make it a little difficult to get to with young children or older family members, but the pretty beach and the excellent beach bar overlooking the coast make it well worth the climb! Public amenities, umbrella and sunbed hire are also available. ➜ 45

LIFESTYLE PETER’S POOL, MARSAXLOKK Located at the tip of Delimara Point in Marsaxlokk, Peter’s Pool is found at one of the furthermost points of the island. Accessibility is where this pretty swimming spot suffers, but as numerous shots on social media by locals and tourist alike will attest, it is well worth the traverse through the fields – a stunning, crystalclear natural swimming pool, with a colour that changes from light blue to emerald green. It’s a perfect place for snorkelling, and while the beach is rocky, the flat terrain makes it perfectly comfortable for a lie-down in the sun (or shade). Due to the unspoiled nature of this bay, you won’t find any food kiosks or amenities, so make sure to get plenty of water and a few beachside nibbles with you.

Għajn Tuffieħa - Photo: viewingmalta.com

XATT L-AĦMAR, GĦAJNSIELEM, GOZO If you’re looking for more of a hidden gem, this one’s hard to beat. Located at the bottom of a very steep hill, it’s a bit of a trek to get there, or if you’re driving down, you’ll need to take it slowly! What you’ll be greeted with when you get there, however, is well worth it

– beautiful water and a picturesque rocky beach featuring a collection of salt pans. It’s lovely and sheltered, making it ideal for swimmers and snorkelers, as well as divers, but due to the deep waters and tricky descent, might not be best for kids. As is to be expected, you’ll find no amenities here, so get that lunch packed before you go!

Cruise around the Med aboard a chartered yacht

Yacht charter in Malta is fast becoming an alternative and cost-effective way of enjoying boating without the costs and headaches of having one’s own boat. Utilising a yacht from a yacht charter company offers both the experienced and inexperienced yachtsman the opportunity and the freedom to sail in many Mediterranean locations, exploring new coastal towns and bays, while having your accommodation with you, making it a convenient way to travel both locally and even overseas to various places like Sicily, Italy, Lipari Islands and the Egadi Islands, subject to the time available and your budget. Those who do not have sailing experience or would like to have a skipper onboard can take up this option from the charter company at minimal cost. The skipper will also provide local knowledge regarding your cruising area such as anchorages, bays and marinas, and the best places to eat and drink. WHAT'S NEW

What’s new on the Maltese islands? From travelling across the islands by bike to the re-opening of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an extensive prehistoric burial site, Martina Said gathers some of the latest happenings you should know about. Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum restored and re-opened Following months of major conservation works, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in the town of Paola – an underground prehistoric burial site – is once again open to visitors. Works to the site included the review and redesign of the environmental management of the site, as well as new visitor facilities. The Hypogeum – recognised by UNESCO as a site that “bears unique testimony to a civilisation which has disappeared” – is a fascinating complex made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. Earliest remains at the site date back to about 4000BC, and the complex was used over a span of many centuries, up to circa 2500 BC. Tickets may be bought online or from Fort St Elmo as well as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology. Tours of the underground prehistoric cemetery are held every hour, with a total of eight tours every day. Through a new, immersive exhibit installed in the redesigned interpretation centre, Santa Marija Tower, Comino

visitors who miss tickets for the regular tour still have plenty to learn and explore. For more information, visit www.heritagemalta.org

Visit Comino’s Santa Marija Tower until the end of October Considered by British holidaymakers to be one of the most ‘Instagrammable’ locations in the world, there’s no denying that Comino’s Blue Lagoon is a star in its own right. But it’s not alone, as the Santa Marija Tower, which opens from April to October, is just another reason to love Comino. After closing down for the winter, the Santa Marija Tower – which featured in the 2002 film

‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ – re-opened on 1st April, and makes for a fascinating history lesson in between refreshing dips. The tower was built in 1618 by Grand Master Wignacourt, and volunteers of Din L-Art Ħelwa – the heritage NGO that manages the site – will be more than willing to share their knowledge about Comino tower, as well as about the island itself. Comino Tower is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, when the flag is flying. Entrance is by donation; children’s entrance is free. Smell is probably our most underrated sense – we tend to ignore it in our day-to-day lives unless we get a whiff of something particularly nice or nasty, but with just one sniff, a strong smell can transport you to a particular place or time, bringing back countless memories. One particular smell that always takes me right back to the countryside walks we used to go on when I was younger is that of wild fennel (bużbież). It grows abundantly in the Maltese scrub, and the pungent aroma of these wild plants makes the urge to stick your nose into a sprig and inhale it deeply irresistible.

And of course, no dish of crispy roast potatoes was complete without a generous helping of those almost anise-like seeds sprinkled on top. Fennel is just one of many hardy herbs that, needing plenty of sunshine and little in the way of water or shade, grow effortlessly in Malta and are characteristic components of the local cuisine. Parsley (tursin), a perennial favourite for adding flavour or a decorative touch is so common that the greengrocer will throw a generous bunch into your bag with the rest of the vegetables for free. Thyme (sagħtar) grows tall in valleys and near the coast – although

for conservation reasons, it is illegal to cut wild thyme in Malta – and is used to flavour lamb and pork stews, as well as braised rabbit. Spiky sprigs of rosemary (klin) are a must for cooking chicken or for baking your own focaccia – it’s quite strong in smell and taste so even a little bit is enough to impart its herby tang. Mint (nagħniegħ) is used for dishes both savoury and sweet – roast lamb and fish dishes like aljotta (fish soup) wouldn’t be the same without it, but for a summer dessert, there are few combinations more refreshing than lemon and mint; not to mention mojitos and Martini cocktails! ➜ 75

Sage’s fragrant and velvety leaves can be used with pork, sausages and preserved meats, as well as butter sauce for ravioli. A combination of different herbs can be used to create a bouquet garni – a bundle of aromatic plants tied together with a thread or string to add to stocks, soups or stews, which is removed before the food is served. While fresh and dried herbs are both commonly available to buy in shops and supermarkets, growing your own has become a popular and satisfying hobby for many Maltese cooks. “Whilst growing up I often spent time running around my family’s fields amongst the crops, but it was only until I got my own little space that I started to really appreciate the joys of growing my own produce,” says Marilú Vella, a talented home-cook who founded her bespoke catering company, Pastizzi Gourmet. “When my husband and I first moved into our house in Siġġiewi, we spent our

first few Saturdays shopping for plants and the following Sundays planting them, and we decided to try our hands with herbs first. We were lucky because it seems like our courtyard is a perfect spot to grow herbs, as there’s enough sun and shade, and they get the right ➜

Method Wash the potatoes really well and chop them into small pieces. I like to keep the skin on, but you can remove it if you prefer. Boil the potatoes in water with salt until they are soft. Let the potatoes cool down once ready. Add extra-virgin olive oil to the potatoes, to your liking, and mix well. Add finely chopped coriander and parsley, and mix well once again. Season with salt and pepper to your liking.

“Parsley is a staple in Maltese cuisine, and it goes with most Maltese dishes.” amount of water and vitamins, so we’ve been pretty successful with our little herb garden.” “In our kitchen we use herbs quite a lot. We’ve managed to grow a number of herbs, including rosemary, mint, thyme, sage and oregano, but probably the most popular ones at home are parsley, basil and one which is not as common; cilantro. Parsley is a staple in Maltese cuisine, and it goes with most Maltese dishes. It is also very easily used to decorate a plate when you want to impress your guests but you’re limited with time, a situation which I often catch myself in!” “Basil is also a popular herb in our Maltese islands, and its smell and taste immediately take me back to Maltese summer and ħobż biż-żejt (fresh bread served with oil and tomato paste) by the sea. plant gives us way too much basil for us to eat, we always make a beautiful pesto to make our basil last longer. Coriander on the other hand has a very particular taste, which some love and others loathe. At home, we love it. And I love how versatile

it can be. Besides Maltese dishes, I also like to experiment with various ethnic cuisines such as Indian and Mexican, where coriander features heavily, so I always make sure to have a little coriander growing in our garden.”

Getting Around Malta is about 27 kilometres long and 14.5 kilometres wide. Short distances make it possible to make the most of your stay at a relaxed pace. The network of buses within the public transport system covers nearly all the islands. Car hire rates in Malta are good value. You may also enjoy a relaxing trip on the calm, blue Mediterranean Sea by taking an island or harbour cruise or cross between Valletta and Sliema by ferry at half hourly intervals.

BUSES The public transport services offered in the Maltese islands operate on a network offering multiple connections and main termini in Malta’s capital, Valletta, and Gozo’s capital, Rabat. A total of 80 different routes link the different localities in Malta to either major hubs such as Valletta, Mater Dei Hospital and the airport or to other destinations, while 15 routes operate in Gozo. The public transport service runs daily between 5.30am and 11pm, with express routes (designated with an ‘X’) having limited stops and operating to and from the airport from different localities. Three digit routes link different localities together and, in most cases, do not serve Valletta. A journey planner, timetable information and details on bus fares are available at www.publictransport.com.mt More details on T: 2122 2000 and on page 97. TRAVELLING TO GOZO A regular ro-ro ferry service carries passengers and cars between Malta and Gozo. The trip takes about 30 minutes. For information and timetables contact The Gozo Channel Company on T: 2210 9000. CAR HIRE Most international car hire companies have a branch in Malta. Local companies too offer this service, with or without a chauffeur. Car hire rates are very reasonable compared to those in other European countries. TAXIS All taxis are fitted with meters and should charge government-controlled prices. Any complaints should be addressed to the Public Transport Authority, T: 2143 8475. Over recent months, a number of private companies have also been set up to offer competitive chauffeur-driven services.

NIGHTLIFE

A Summer of

Entertainment

Maltese summer evenings are a celebration of music, events and festivals, with plenty to look forward to every night of the week. Jo Caruana takes her pick of the night-time activities to enjoy during your visit. Isle of MTV

The Maltese summer is something every local looks forward to with glee. There’s an atmosphere-shift that takes place come June – when the weather changes from winter to summer, the new-season wardrobe comes out, and the promise of long evenings puts everyone in a good mood. Summer locally is hot… very hot. The days can be scorching and it’s often way too warm to get anything active done; unless, perhaps, it involves a few hours in the water. Naturally, this makes the evening the focus of the day for entertainment, so this is when most people choose to have their fun and socialise, and there are certainly many options to help you do just that. In fact, from festivals to live gigs, you’ll find that party atmosphere alive in all sorts of places. Festivals are a great choice, and there are many to look forward

Valletta Film Festival - Photo: www.vallettafilmfestival.com

to this summer, starting with the Valletta Film Festival (www. vallettafilmfestival.com) from 16th to 25th June. It’s the island’s largest film event and it transforms the capital into a city-sized cinema, with 40 feature films and 25 short films being screened at several venues

around the capital. Free screenings are also held at Pjazza San Ġorġ, Valletta, while masterclasses, conferences and debates provide a platform through which participants can discuss film and contemporary affairs over the course of the festival’s programme. ➜ 89

NIGHTLIFE Other cultural events this season include Malta International Arts Festival (www.maltaartsfestival. com), from 29th June to 16th July, which provides a dynamic platform through which established and emerging Maltese artistes showcase their work and engage with broader audiences. Similarly, the Malta Jazz Festival (www.maltajazzfestival.com) from 20th to 22nd July, is a highlyacclaimed event that brings local and international artistes together for three days of jazz performances, concerts and events. Each year, the festival features some of the most popular jazz musicians working in the music sector, and offers a diverse programme of free activities and events, such as open-air concerts, masterclasses, intimate jazz performances, and jazz contests. ➜

Each year, the festival strives to enrich the cultural calendar with a host of events, including virtuoso music performances, visual installations, dance, and well-established international acts performing at various venues in and around Valletta. If you love music then Malta Music Week (www.isleofmtv.com) is a must for you, taking place from 23rd to 28th June. It provides the lead-up to the well-known Isle of MTV and sees various events – ranging from sunset beach and pool parties to club nights at some of Malta’s most happening clubs – take place. Highlights this year will include Cheatcodes and Club MTV at al fresco club Gianpula on 23rd June and the Café del Mar Sunset Party featuring Kungs (at Café del Mar, Qawra) on 25th June. Of course, it is Isle of MTV (on 27th June) that is the main event. Over the years, this one-night-only festival has brought huge names

to Malta’s shores, including Lady Gaga, the Black-eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Rita Ora, Enrique Iglesias and Jessie J to name a few. Now in its 11th edition, this free-of-charge event will feature established and up-and-coming international artistes like The Chainsmokers, DNCE, Jonas Blue and Don Diablo. Sticking with the big-name theme, the next major event – this time at outdoor club UNO in Rabat – is set to take place on 30th June featuring legendary DJ Armin Van Buuren, who is a global ambassador for trance. He has placed an incredible five times in the Number One position of the critically-acclaimed DJ Mag Top 100 poll, and has been voted the best trance DJ in the world at the International Dance Music Awards and the DJ Awards, so this is bound to be one of Malta’s hottest parties. Opening for the DJ will be Malta’s very own internationallyfamous duo, Tenishia. ➜

Also for club-lovers, Showers (www.showersevent.com), on 8th July, has solidified its name as one of the most popular parties in Malta, and 2017 is set to raise the bar. The main act this year will be award-winning DJ Mikael Weermets, with Kenan&Kerim, Daniel Pereaux, Seb Sooka, Marquis, Alvin Gee, DJ RUBY, and JJoy also taking to the DJ stand. Then, completing the summer’s party atmosphere is Tomorrowland (29th July) when local and international DJs on the UNITE stage play in a setting inspired by a customised stage, decoration and special effects. It promises to be a unique show that enables you to escape reality. For something a little mellower, attend the Marsovin Summer Wine Festival

(www.marsovinwinefestival.com) from 7th to 9th July. It provides a mix of entertainment while also presenting a vast selection of over 30 certified D.O.K. and I.Ġ.T. quality wines from grapes grown around Malta and Gozo. Wines can be enjoyed by visiting the different
