hether you’re after a beach, adventure-filled, cultural or romantic vacation in the Maltese islands, you should not be disappointed. In case you need some help to prepare your itinerary you would do well to read Sarah Micallef ’s article that starts on page 23 and draw inspiration from her list of top things to do to make the most of the Maltese summer. Of course the intense heat typical of this time of year will hinder the intensity of your activities and travels. In fact you will most likely be heading off to the beach pretty often to cool off

and relax. In this issue of Guide Me the Cover Story takes a peek at the islands’ hidden gems – those beaches that are not typically found on the tourist trail and are not heavily frequented by locals because they require an element of roughing it up to reach. So if you want to beat the crowds and surround yourself with pristine waters and idyllic surroundings turn to page 15 and choose your favourite swimming spot. There are many other interesting reads in this issue of Guide Me. We shed light on the stunning City Gate project designed by world-renowned

architect Renzo Piano and we ask two local prominent architects to share their opinions about it. In a separate article Jo Caruana looks into why so many foreign couples are choosing the Maltese islands to exchange their I dos, while the ‘Nightlife’ section lets you in on what’s on after the sun sets. Enjoy your visit!

Discover the islands’ pristine beaches

If you’re willing to go the extra mile to beat the crowds that flock to the islands’ beaches each summer but you’re unsure of where to head to, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Martina Said rounds up the best hidden gems in Malta and Gozo for swimming, snorkelling and diving, characterised by stunning natural surroundings and sheer tranquillity.

Fomm ir-Riħ Bay - Photo: viewingmalta.com

The stunning beaches dotted along Malta and Gozo’s rugged coastlines need little introduction. In fact, anyone planning a trip to Malta would have likely carried out thorough research on the best beaches to visit here well before packing a suitcase filled with swimwear and tanning lotion. Not all the beaches, however, attract equal numbers of visitors – the more popular ones are those visibly brimming with beachgoers, especially in the weekend,

and are noticeably full from a fair distance away. Other not-so-obvious beaches tend to get the attention of adventure-seekers and sea-lovers who are not afraid of roughing it up a little to get there. If you haven’t discovered the latter yet, keep reading. One of the most stunning swimming spots located in the south of Malta is St Peter’s Pool. It is a perfect example of an unspoilt beach, partly because it is difficult to get to and offers nothing other than rocks and glittering water, and

is quite literally a natural swimming pool carved into the rocks. The only way to enter the water is by jumping in, however, seeing as it is remarkably clean and ever so inviting, it is worth the effort to get to it. There are no kiosks or umbrella rentals in the vicinity, so take all that you need with you. Further along the southern coast of Malta is Wied iż-żurrieq, which is actually a valley and not a beach, but has been popular for swimming, fishing and diving for generations. ➜ 15

COVER STORY

The dark blue water here reaches a depth of approximately 30 metres, and is surrounded by high cliffs that are often used as springboards for thrill-seekers to jump from. Divers are especially enthralled by the varied underwater topography at Wied iż-żurrieq, and it also attracts snorkelers for the range of sea creatures inhabiting the rocky coast. Up north of the island is where the majority of Malta’s beaches are located, but some secluded spots still enjoy relative tranquillity and are frequented by only a handful of visitors. One

such bay is Fomm ir-Riħ, which is one of the most isolated pebbly bays on the island and certainly one of the most difficult to get to. Located next to Baħrija, it can be accessed by a tricky and steep 20 minute walk along a footpath, which is especially challenging on the way back under a scorching sun. However, it is worth every drop of sweat as this bay boasts some of the clearest waters in the most peaceful of surroundings. Anchor Bay in Mellieħa is one of the most picturesque on the island, surrounded by rocky slopes

and known for its green-blue clear water. To access this bay, visitors must set foot inside the popular Popeye Village, originally a film set for the 1980 musical production Popeye starring Robin Williams. This bay is especially popular for diving due to its magnificent marine life and stunning underwater caves. At the farthest tip, north of the island, is Armier Bay, a sandy beach situated in a green area in Mellieħa known as l-Aħrax. It features two beautiful beaches, the larger one known as Armier and the smaller one aptly called Little Armier. ➜

COVER STORY

While this bay is somewhat more popular than the others mentioned here, it is still fairly peaceful and less crowded than the likes of Mellieħa Bay and Golden Bay. You’ll also be spoilt for choice as far as dining options are concerned, as there are a number of lidos to choose from for a delicious spot of lunch or even a fun water sport. From all the bays mentioned so far, Slugs Bay, off Marfa Ridge, is certainly one of the most ‘off the beaten track’ on the island. It is accessed via an inconspicuous path off the main road of L-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, and requires a 15 minute or so trek down a rough path through cliff boulders. Once you get to it, you’ll be glad you made the effort – the bay is pristine, and only made up of a few square

metres of sand and rugged rocks. But the water is fresh, clean and sparkling, and ever so tranquil that you wouldn’t want to leave. Not too different to this is the sandy Imgiebaħ Bay, also known as Selmun Bay, in the northeastern part of Malta. The road

leading up to this bay is bumpy, dusty and long, but the bay itself is adorned with natural elements and blessed with peace and quiet. It is perfect for adventure-seekers and snorkelling enthusiasts, though you’ll need to take all supplies with you, including food and drink. ➜

COVER STORY If you’ve knocked all these off your list, you still have plenty more to discover in neighbouring Gozo, the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago. Mġarr ix-Xini should be up there on your list – it is an impressively picturesque bay set within a creek and a steep-sided natural valley, characterised by rough and high rocks on both sides of the bay. The clear water and rich marine life make this bay an ideal choice for snorkelling, diving and underwater photography. Its natural splendour also caught the eye of film director and actress Angelina Jolie, who chose Mġarr ix-Xini as the location for her upcoming film, ‘By The Sea’, featuring her husband Brad Pitt. San Blas Bay, located along Gozo’s north-eastern coast, is small, tranquil and immersed in natural surroundings. The sand at this

San Blas Bay - Photo: viewingmalta.com

gorgeous bay is reddish-orange in colour, and attracts small numbers of people because it is not for the faint-hearted. The road leading down to the beach is very steep, and visitors must either walk down on foot, or make use of a car ferrying service which drives you down to and back up from the bay. The road may not be easy, but you have

our word that it is worth it. Not too far from here is Daħlet Qorrot Bay, a small pebbly beach lined with a few boathouses and plenty of opportunities to snorkel. The bay consists of a small sandy area, rocks as well as a concrete platform which is perfect for sunbathing or for placing your belongings while you enjoy a refreshing dip.

MUST DO

Making the most of the

Maltese summer

Local feast - Photo: viewingmalta.com

There’s so much to see and do on the Maltese islands come summer time, it’s sometimes difficult to fit it all in! Sarah Micallef offers her recommendations for making the most of summer on the Maltese islands.

TAKE TO THE SEA The Maltese islands are surrounded by the glorious Mediterranean Sea, and offer a wealth of sea-based activities to enjoy. If you’re looking to relax on the beach, Malta has everything from golden sand and crystal waters to rocky crags. The most popular sandy beaches are Mellieħa Bay, neighbouring Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bays, Paradise Bay, and Ramla l-Ħamra in Gozo. If a rocky beach is more

your thing, great options are St Peter’s Pool near Marsaxlokk, the Blue Grotto in Żurrieq and Għar Lapsi in Siġġiewi. Meanwhile, the smaller island of Comino is also worth a visit – particularly for the crystal waters of the Blue Lagoon. If you’re looking for a luxurious way in which to enjoy the beauty of the Med, consider hiring a yacht from which you can take in the glorious coastline and sparkling blue sea. ➜

“Traditional village feasts make for a unique experience during your visit, assaulting your senses with a riot of colourful lights, band music, noisy firework displays, statues and banners dedicated to the patron saint.” 23

MUST DO Boutique yacht charter provider Azure Ultra offers charter packages and bespoke programmes that are sure to make for a memorable time at sea during your stay. And if you’re after some excitement on your beach visit, check out the water sports on offer – you’ll usually find everything from jet-skiing, wake-boarding, speed boating and paragliding at the popular beaches. Meanwhile, if you’d prefer to make the most of the Med’s marine life, why not book a scuba diving course or test-dive at a diving school like Octopus Garden in Qawra? The Maltese islands make for an excellent diving destination, and Octopus Garden organises ➜

MUST DO EXPLORE THE CULTURE One of the most interesting things about the Maltese islands is their distinct culture and history, so a visit here wouldn’t be complete without exploring some of the historical sights and making the most of a few cultural events. We’d definitely recommend exploring Malta’s capital – the UNESCO World Heritage site of Valletta is a fascinating place with so much to offer, including the Upper Barrakka Gardens (with phenomenal views across the Three Cities), St George’s Square and the Grand Master's Palace. And if the heat gets too much, there’s no shortage of cafés and restaurants in which to take refuge. Moreover, the summer months bring with them a variety of music, culture and arts-related festivals and events which are definitely ➜

regular boat trips to the best dive spots, at which you can explore a wealth of wrecks, caves and reefs.

GO ON AN ADVENTURE Malta makes for a perfect backdrop for your next adventure, and boasts a wealth of outdoor activities for adrenaline junkies. The landscape is perfect for activities like trekking, cycling, climbing and hiking, but if the summer heat scares you away, you can still enjoy the scenery and

get an adrenaline boost by renting a quad bike. Malta Tours & Cruises do a great quad safari in Gozo, or, if you’d like to see the islands from an altogether higher vantage point, Malta School of Flying offers both courses and aircraft hire for the daredevils among you! Whatever your interests and abilities, there’s bound to be something to suit you, so look into contacting one of the many outdoor clubs or excursion companies to see the options available. 27

MUST DO

Photo: viewingmalta.com

“The Maltese love to eat and drink more than they love anything else, so it’s no surprise you’ll find a wealth of locally produced food that is worth sampling.” worth checking out, and it is also the peak season when it comes to village feasts in Malta, with at least a couple of feasts (or festi) being held every weekend. Traditional village feasts make for a unique experience during your visit, assaulting your senses with a riot of colourful lights, band music, noisy firework displays, statues and

banners dedicated to the patron saint. For many locals, the village feasts represent the main social event in the village of the year, so it’s certainly worth factoring a visit to one for the experience alone!

SAMPLE LOCAL FOOD AND CRAFTS The Maltese love to eat and drink more than they love anything else, so it’s no surprise you’ll find a wealth of locally produced food that is worth sampling. Check out the cuisine feature on page 81 to learn about the best places to eat some of the tastiest local food, but if you want a taste of local flavour that you can take home with you, look out for packages of sun-dried tomatoes, jams and preserves at gourmet food stores, as well as home-made pâtés, cheeselets and traditional galletti (water biscuits), olive oil and tomato paste produced on the islands. Meanwhile, local crafts make for another excellent souvenir to take home as a reminder of your stay. Choose from traditional Maltese clocks, mouth-blown glass, stonework, ceramics, filigree and traditional lace items that you’ll find in the craft villages in Malta and Gozo, as well as on stalls at the local markets. No visit to Ta’ Qali Crafts Village in Malta would be complete without a stop at ceramics studio Mediterranean Ceramics, at which you’ll not only find a variety of ceramic items to buy, but if you’re feeling creative, you can also arrange to participate in one of their workshops. ➜

MUST DO

VISIT THE SISTER ISLE About 20 minutes away by ferry, the sister island of Gozo has a personality all of its own, and as both locals and tourists know, makes for the perfect day-trip or weekend away. The island is more rural than Malta, and boasts beautiful countryside, picturesque villages and pretty coastal areas to explore, as well as a few charming markets and excellent eateries. If you’d like to go off the beaten track and visit some of Gozo’s gorgeous hidden corners, book yourself in for a Jeep or quad tour with Gozo Pride tours. This way, you can access parts of the small island that the larger coaches or mini buses cannot reach, making for a truly memorable experience.

Mediterraneo Marine Park

TREAT THE KIDS, AND YOURSELF If you’re travelling with kids, there are loads of attractions and fun things to do on the islands. Top kid-friendly sites include the Mediterraneo Marine Park in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, where children can swim with dolphins and see sea lions, exotic birds, reptiles and more – perfect for nature lovers.

And while summer time is a blast for kids in Malta, with fun beach days, yummy ice-cream and all manner of fun things to do, don’t forget that this is your holiday too! Take some downtime and relax at one of the Carisma Spas, located in some of the best hotels in Malta, during your stay – you’ll certainly return feeling refreshed.

IN DEPTH

Valletta’s new Parliament building turning Maltese stone into lace As you walk into the capital city, it’s difficult not to notice Valletta’s imposing new City Gate – forming part of a project which has been years in the making. As you cross the bridge into the city, the area beyond the gate, comprising the open-air theatre within the ruins of the former Royal Opera House and the new Parliament building, also vie for attention. Sarah Micallef looks behind the scenes into one of the largest and most controversial local architectural projects of our time. With the inauguration of the new Parliament building taking place in May, the City Gate project is now nearing its final stages, and once completed, will bring to a close one of the most hotly debated architectural projects in recent times. While few projects have been the source of quite as much controversy however, in its completion, the impressive Parliament in particular has led many to change their

tone, viewing it as an icon of contemporary architecture. Designed by the internationally renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the project kicked off in 2009, and encompasses City Gate and the immediate area outside the city walls, the open-air theatre, the new Parliament building and the landscaping of the ditch. Locally, it was entrusted to Architecture Project, led by founding partner Konrad Buhagiar. ➜

IN DEPTH

Photo: courtesy of Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation

The Parliament building, Mr Buhagiar says, was conceived as “a symbol of the democracy characterising the governance of the people of Malta, and an essential element in the rehabilitation of the City Gate area.” Meanwhile, City Gate was to serve as a dignified entrance to the capital in accordance with Valletta’s role as “the political and cultural centre of the island,” while the Opera House site was envisaged as an open public space dedicated to theatre activities, with a particular emphasis on music and the performing arts. There was also another element to the projects, which were designed with economic regeneration and environmental improvement in mind. In fact, as Mr Buhagiar explains, “the redesign and redevelopment of City Gate itself was necessary to provide the infrastructure for improved connectivity with the ditch, (and therefore with the waterfront), and

the restoration and landscaping of the ditch from St James’ to St John’s Counterguard and its rehabilitation to house recreational and other cultural activities.” Apart from the redesign and redevelopment of City Gate therefore, the project also included the preservation of the existing exrailway station, bridge and platform – which are today connected with the Parliament building, the restoration of the original 17th-century bridge, the landscaping of the ditch (which has yet to be realised) and the provision of infrastructure such as lifts for enhanced mobility and access to the site from the ditch, making it easier for the public to enjoy. The Parliament building itself is made up of two massive volumes of stone, supported by stilts that recede from the façade to create an impression of suspension in air. Besides its imposing look, one of the main defining features of the building and one of the most important concepts from which this building derives its functionality concerns energy. “Combined with energy captured by the photo-voltaic panels on the roof, the stable temperature of the immense mass of the rock below is being exploited so that enough energy can be recovered to heat and cool the whole building.” ➜

Richard England Photo: Rene Rossignaud

“The whole scheme is a veritable masterpiece” Leading Maltese architect Prof. Richard England shares his views on the project that has divided opinions since inception.

“I am proud to say that I was part of the process that initiated the manifestation of what is without doubt an extraordinary Parliament building and a magnificent imposing gateway to our capital city. The staircases between the Parliament building and the fortification bastions must rank among the most enthralling and beautifully sculpted stairs anywhere. If the whole project has any point which does not rise to the exceptional level of the whole scheme, it would be the openair theatre which seems to have somehow lost the poetic overlay portrayed in the original model and drawings. The fact that the alabaster panels have been deleted contributes to the loss of quality as manifest in the original concept. There is no doubt however, that the whole scheme is a veritable masterpiece, which catapults Valletta into the annals of 21st century architectural excellence.”

IN DEPTH

“This project will eventually be recognised as one of the most intelligent in Renzo Piano’s career.” Prof. Alex Torpiano, leading architect and Dean of the Faculty for the Built Environment at the University of Malta gives his expert opinion.

“Piano’s proposals for this site have attracted controversy, visceral criticism as well as fulsome praise. This is not surprising, in view of the importance of the site and in view of the fact that the proposals do not follow the facile route of designing a new Gate ‘elevation’, or a new Parliament building ‘elevation’. “Will the reorganisation of the entrance to Valletta be successful in the way envisaged by Renzo Piano? Will it be loved? In my opinion, this project will eventually be recognised as one of the most intelligent in Renzo Piano’s career. This was a difficult site, through which one walked, at best desensitised by the ugliness, rendered uglier by the stalls in front of the gate, and under the arches of the gate, (which, it seems, many have already been forgotten – which is surely a good thing); at worst, increasingly depressed at the squalor of the entrance to this noble city ‘built for gentlemen’. “In my opinion, Valletta now has an entrance sequence which already most enjoy to traverse, as one would the finer urban squares of a fine city, a ‘place’ where one can stop to take photographs, or to meet friends. It is already one of the places that make the character of a city. And that is a tremendously creative achievement.”

”In my opinion, Valletta now has an entrance sequence which already most enjoy to traverse.” - Prof. Alex Torpiano

In fact, the building will eventually develop into a ‘zero (CO2) emission’ building, the energy for which will be recovered by heat exchange with the underlying rock. Another noteworthy feature is the building’s total reliance on local coralline limestone, quarried in Gozo, for its envelope. The inspiration behind the fascinating effect of the stonework on the façade, Mr Buhagiar explains, was derived from antiquity, particularly “the fascination of antiquity to create buildings like architectural bodies without contiguities or joints, ‘ex uno lapide’”. This was achieved through a masterful combination of new and traditional techniques, including precise jointing and uniform surface texture, giving off the effect of a stone building that was like a product of nature – an effect owing ➜

to which Prof. Richard England maintains, “only a master architect of the stature of Piano could turn Malta stone into Malta lace.” Moreover, in its completion, Prof. Alex Torpiano asserts that “the massing of, and relationship between the two blocks, particularly the sharp angles, the skew views, the flying bridges and the open staircases, create a new vibrant landscape reminiscent of, but not replicating, the fortifications; rather, excitingly new interpretations of these characteristic features of historic Valletta,” as was Renzo Piano’s original intention.

Certainly, all hiccups and bumps along the way considered, it is clear that the original conviction that this building was to remain a symbol of national identity was kept at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Indeed, as Mr Buhagiar maintains, “it is hoped that, in a world where buildings are consumed like any other disposable item, the new Parliament building will provide an anchor against the shifting tides of fashion and taste, and will achieve its mission to reshape not only the entrance to Valletta, but also the lives and future of its inhabitants.”

THINGS TO DO

Touring the Maltese islands

a personal account From outer space, the tiny islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, which form the Maltese archipelago, are barely visible. Not that I’ve ever been to outer space, of course. However, it was on my to-do list up till the age of 21 when my expectations became a little more realistic. When you’re actually IN Malta, the islands belie their small stature with oodles of personality and a sheer volume of things to do. So these days, I season my life with delicious and tantalising trips to Malta and its sister islands, with their fascinating history, rich culture and warm and friendly people. For our next trip, my friends John, Caroline, Juliette and I booked most of our excursions online on www.excursionsinmalta.com. We plan to go scuba diving, quad biking, and we’ve also booked a day trip to Sicily, so this year

our holiday is a sort of ‘two for one’ if you like. John, a bit of a culture buff, wanted the ‘Temples and Local Lifestyle’ tour, and we thought that the ‘Fernandes Sunset Cruise’ would be a nice treat for

the girls, although it must be said I’m a bit of a romantic myself. Not too sure about John though! We were also interested in the ‘Photography Tour’ which is the newest tour on the website. John fancies himself as a little bit of a David Bailey, and I just bought a new camera, so we boys will be going on that while the girls go horse riding. We thought it would be nice to do a couple of things separately. So all in all, it looks like we’re in for a fun trip. We have left a couple of days free so that we can laze by the pool and get suntans that we can show off back home. Plus there are a couple of restaurants I saw on my last trip that I promised myself I’d try next time round. And we will also be meeting up with some Maltese friends who have kindly offered to let us spend the day with them at their villa in Mellieħa. Can’t wait! Arrigo Group Ltd, 248, Tower Road, Sliema. Valletta Waterfront

the historic destination with the coloured doors Historically of great cultural and economic importance, the Valletta Waterfront has been restored and revitalised by the Valletta Cruise Port consortium to suit the everchanging requirements of a dynamic Grand Harbour. The Valletta Waterfront destination combines food, retail and entertainment outlets within a maritime hub, which for the past 13 years has proved to be a highly popular destination. For those in search of a relaxing time with good food and entertainment, the Valletta Waterfront’s many restaurants and bars present a variety of offerings catering to different tastes, with dining right at the water’s edge. The establishments’ indoor dining areas are situated inside the tastefully refurbished, historical stores, originally constructed 46

by Grand Master Pinto in 1752. Today, ushering in a modern era, the iconic doors have been revived with an artistic impression of colour, representing the storage of goods from days past, with blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat and red for wine. An exquisite place at any time

of the day: relax with a coffee in the morning watching the small boats bobbing along, occasionally the bigger cruise ships; a bite to eat at lunchtime; or a lovely meal of whatever takes your fancy at sundown, with magnificent views of the Grand Harbour juxtaposed by fireworks across the water.

This is the first time that this voluntary scheme was open to restaurants and applications for the next intake will re-open later on this year. The award ceremony will become an annual calendar event that will take place before the busy summer months. These 71 restaurants join the QA family which also includes Visitor Attractions and Destination Management Companies. During the award ceremony Scruples, Sa Re Ga Ma & de Mondion won the Best in Class award in their respective category, whilst the Blue Elephant, Quadro and de Mondion won the Best Hospitality Award. All participating restaurants were assessed by a mystery guest against a set of criteria covering service, hospitality, food, ambience, as well as other areas. Getting married on the Maltese islands Couples and industry experts tell Jo Caruana why the Maltese islands really are the perfect place for a stunning destination wedding.

Photos: Phoenicia Hotel

Destination weddings are all the rage worldwide and the Maltese islands attract their fair share of foreign couples to exchange their ‘I dos’. In fact, statistics show that around 500 foreign couples now head to Malta each year to tie the knot, and that number is growing annually. As a result, the islands have become completely geared up to the kinds of weddings that foreigners may want to have, and the ways to really showcase the best that the islands have to offer. “The foreign couples I work with are usually drawn to three main aspects here: sun, sea and history,” explains Patricia Falzon, who runs wedding planning company Perfect Weddings. “We have a good

climate, friendly people and some lovely venues. All of that provides a really dynamic combination for a destination wedding.” One of the aspects couples love most about Malta is the fact that the island offers all sorts of different spots for their big day, with places for both church and civil ceremonies, and historic and contemporary venues. One historic venue is the five-star Phoenicia Hotel, which is located just outside the bastion walls of the capital city, Valletta. It has been a popular wedding venue for decades, thanks to its elegant style and lush landscaped gardens. “Malta is a great-value destination for weddings because

you can have an extravagant wedding for less than half the average price of weddings in other parts of the world,” explains the hotel’s planner Chrystelle Doublesin. “You get a five-star stay with all the wedding works, plus your flights and accommodation, and you will still probably have enough money left over for the honeymoon! ➜ 49

Heather & Steve

“Plus, a destination wedding gives you the opportunity to make the fun last longer, as you can really enjoy the time you have with your closest friends and family. It becomes a time in your life that you will never forget,” she says. Catering is also an important part of the day, and local caterers are able to create innovative menus for both sit-down meals and stand-up receptions. “We have come to understand what overseas couples are looking for when they plan a destination wedding here,” says Veronica Zammit Tabona from Osborne Boutique Caterers, which also operates the beautiful Villa Arrigo venue. “It’s often important for them to host their family and friends for a ceremony, aperitifs and dinner, followed by dancing, so villas are regularly the top choice.” Wedding planner Sarah Young

is also adept at helping bridesand-groomsto-be create the day they have always dreamed of. “Couples love to come to Malta and extend their celebrations way beyond their day, and to have a special few days, or even a week, with family and friends,” she explains. “The island has so much to offer and we can really tailor everything from the venue to the catering to suit the requests of each couple. Malta is very versatile and many aspects work out much cheaper than getting married in the UK or other parts of the world.” One of the couples that Sarah has helped to celebrate their wedding in Malta is Shirley and Robert, who chose a historic venue for their big day. “When we came across Malta

while researching possible wedding destinations, we instantly fell in love with it,” says Shirley. “The fabulous weather, gorgeous scenery and beautiful churches – the perfect combination.” Once the couple chose Malta, they travelled here to finalise the details. “We had seen reviews about Sarah online and in magazines, and instantly clicked with her, so we knew she would be the right planner for us,” says the bride. “We were thrilled with our choice as everything was just as we wanted it to be – the food, flowers, musicians, venue… everything! We will forever treasure our memories of the day, and of Malta, which really is a beautiful island; our guests thoroughly enjoyed it and were also blown away by the island’s beauty. We can’t wait to return to celebrate our anniversaries.” British bride Heather, and her now-husband Steve, also chose Sarah as their wedding planning in Malta. “When Steve and I first got engaged we knew we wanted an intimate ceremony and decided that going abroad would be the perfect ➜ Photo: Villa Arrigo

way to tie the knot. We researched our options online and, after a few weeks, settled on Malta because we knew it wouldn’t be a long flight for our guests. However the more and more we looked into it we realised there were tons of reasons to love it, including the gorgeous venues and bright blue skies.” Initially, Heather found the idea of getting married abroad quite daunting, especially vis-à-vis the legal requirements and finding the right suppliers. “That’s why we were thrilled to find Sarah, and she and her team were so helpful and guided us on absolutely everything. They helped us create the vision, kept in constant contact and were completely involved in every step; they even kept us on target with the paperwork!” As a result of her positive experience, Heather is keen to encourage other foreign couples to consider getting married in Malta. “I would say go for it!” she grins. “Your guests will have that relaxed holiday feeling, and being abroad adds that extra something special to the day. It really was more than I could have dreamed of and I still can’t stop looking at the photos.”

Gozo – Just across the water Gozo, Malta’s littler sister island, has also become a wedding destination in its own right and around 50 foreign couples each year are now getting married here. “We’ve been in the business for some time now and know exactly what our clients love about Gozo,” says Marvik Borg, who runs Malta Event Design and Gozo Break Ltd with his weddingplanner partner Anna Spiteri Borg. “There’s the amazing backdrops, the relaxed family-friendly ambience and the fascinating history. The island’s small size makes it easy for people to get around and for friends and family to stay close to one another in self-catering villas or houses of character, and there’s also a very good range of hotels and other venues to choose from.” One of those hotels is the Grand Hotel in Mġarr, which enjoys

beautiful views across the harbour to Comino and Malta, and which hosts around 12 weddings every year. “Gozo, and our outdoor setting, is very picturesque, which couples usually love,” says event and banqueting manager Alfio Rapa, while explaining that the hotel’s Breeze Roof Terrace, with its 360° views, is particularly popular. “We’re also able to offer a yearround destination, as we have both indoor and outdoor options, and many of Gozo’s activities can be enjoyed regardless of the month in question. Our team can really make the most of that, by planning a wedding that fits in with the time of year and organising every aspect of what the couple have in mind, from the flowers to the photography.” Wedding planner Anna, meanwhile, believes that Gozo offers good options for all sorts of different people: romantics, nature and sea lovers, and culture and history buffs. “Plus, the fact that most businesses here are small and family-run gives a very particular feel to the place,” she says. couples celebrate their big day, including Maria and Eamonn, who tied the knot in 2014. “Gozo was the first holiday destination we travelled to as a couple and we fell in love with its rustic scenery, friendly people and amazing food,” says Maria. “The fact that English is widely spoken also made the organisational side of things much easier. “Our wedding day was absolutely perfect, thanks to Marvik and Anna. They helped us to choose the venue, select our vendors and come up with fun ideas to make our guests’ stay as exciting as possible – in fact all our family and friends commented on the attention to detail. We will definitely remember our Gozo wedding for the rest of our lives,” Maria smiles. British couple Craig and Kara also fell in love with Gozo and sought

the guidance of Malta Event Design to get married there. “We wanted a laid-back, relaxed and informal wedding, and that’s exactly what we got,” says Kara. “It really couldn’t have gone any better. From the scenery to the venue, Marvik and Anna’s vision was completely in synch with our own and their recommendations completely spot on. We already

wish that we could come back next year and do it all again!” All in all, there’s no denying the fact that a destination wedding can really add a whole plethora of exciting aspects to your big day – and even your big week.

Living From

Door to Shore If real estate developments were judged solely on the strength of their location then it would be hard to compare other local projects to Tigné Point. Set on a stunning waterfront headland across the water from Malta’s capital, Valletta – Tigné Point occupies the eastern end of the fashionable town of Sliema. Conceived as a holistic lifestyle development, this project is currently best known for its luxurious seafront apartments. Whilst these continue to attract buyers from different parts of the globe, the residential component

comprises just 55 per cent of the total area of the development. This is complemented by ‘The Point’ shopping mall, Pjazza Tigné – the largest square in the district, the 18th century Fort Tigné and a purpose-built, state-of-the-art business centre which is currently being built on the site between the central square and the sea. Tigné Point also includes some of the most sought-after homes on the island. The recent release of the seafront block Q1 was a runaway success with apartments sold in a matter of months to a mix of local and

international buyers from over 12 different countries. With these now in the process of being handed over, a new release is in the offing with Q2, a second stunning waterfront block situated on an elevated plinth at the water’s edge, providing residents 180˚ open sea views. Q2 is set to be released in autumn 2015. The interior design of this block has once again been entrusted to Martin Xuereb and Associates, one of Malta’s leading design firms. Taking his starting point from the sea, the light and the tranquil setting of the location at the edge of this car-free peninsula, Xuereb has created a design which is at once both timeless and contemporary. One of the most interesting aspects of Q2 is the variety of layouts available within the block. Whether it’s a one-bed seafront pied-à-terre, a two-bed home with a 15 metre waterfront frontage or a lavish, corner three or four-bed residence, Q2 offers the luxury of choice to the discerning home owner. Planned to be excellently finished with quality materials and cutting-edge styles, these new homes will include standard specifications like HVAC heating and air-conditioning, smart and energy-efficient lighting, and a range of large format tiles and parquet in varying colours. A new showflat showcasing the design of this new block is scheduled to be complete by the end of summer when more information will be available on www.Q2.com.mt 57

Sizzling summer nights Get your party looks right this summer with Martina Said’s pick of the top fashion trends for chic, seasonal evening wear, which should take you from a lazy evening in a jazz bar to a rocking party.

The jumpsuit This on-trend style is gaining ground as a popular alternative to a dress, and what a charming alternative it is. A jumpsuit is a fine item to have in any wardrobe – it exudes style and personality, and can be made to fit a range of shapes and silhouettes thanks to the variety of cuts and designs out there. This 3.1 Philip Lim powder pink tuxedo jumpsuit (pictured right) is perfect for an afternoon wedding, while a classic black design as seen in a collection by Tamara Mellon will take you from a smart event to a night on the town. This season’s jumpsuits are getting a chic makeover with flared shapes, silky fabrics and eye-popping bright colours too, and can be perfectly paired with a statement necklace or bold pair of shoes. ➜

The camisole We’d choose breezy and loose-fitting clothes anytime over skin-tight outfits in summer, and no item is more versatile than the popular camisole. Seeing that bright colours are in vogue this year, you could pair a lime green or orange camisole with a pair of palazzo pants, a maxi skirt or a pair of shorts depending on where you’re heading – be it a beach party, casual drinks by the pool or even a nightclub.

The minimalist heel An evening summer look is incomplete without this summer’s staple pair of heels – the minimalist sandal in dynamic shades of white, neon, blue and beige, or even subtle prints like crocodile skin. These simple sandals are a perfect match with pretty much any outfit: team them with white jeans and a bright camisole for a fun party feel, with a shift dress for instant glamour, or with a playsuit for a young and flirty look. The beauty of these shoes lies in their simplicity, which is why they are so popular – with a single strap, ankle fastening and high heel, you’ll be dancing the night away in absolute style. ➜ London Trash

The Aztec print This trend has been around a little while but we’re certainly glad it’s not going anywhere. Defined by horizontal lines, graphic shapes and geometric designs in all colours, this versatile print is especially popular for accessories and jewellery, and stands out beautifully against block-coloured outfits. Work this tribal print subtly into your look through a statement necklace, beaded clutch, a pair of wedges or set of bangles, and watch it perk up your look in an instant. If you’re keen on wearing the print as a main item, then combine an Aztec print skirt with a block colour top, or printed playsuit with plain heels or wedges. The maxi dress We often associate maxi dresses with beachwear, but this summer staple could be much more versatile and dressed up or down for a casual lunch date or summer party. Look out for maxi dresses in block colours and/or embellished with glamorous details such as embroidery, fringe, a waist belt, beading or appliqué, taking the look from casual to chic. Pair the dress with a flat pair of jewelled

Pick one item of clothing with a tropical print and stick to a plain palette with everything else, and if you’re shopping around and must pick only one item to add to your shopping bag, we suggest you opt for a flattering pair of cropped trousers that look great with a plain camisole, slouchy t-shirt or sleeveless blouse, together with a high pair of heels. A taste of

local flavour

Whether you fancy a dinner of fresh fish, a tasty bite to eat as the waves crash softly against the beach or a refreshing ice-cream on a hot summer day, Malta offers up some delicious cuisine best enjoyed throughout the summer months. Sarah Micallef follows the locals to find out about the yummiest fare to be had and where.

PASTIZZI Easily one of the most well-known local savoury snacks, these delicious diamond-shaped filo pastries make for a hearty snack all year round. Whether you favour the ricotta or pea filling, you can find pastizzi at small, hole-in-the-wall outlets known as pastizzeriji which are dotted around the islands. The place which the locals

mostly associate with these little morsels of deliciousness however is Rabat – more specifically, a little place called Crystal Palace, or as locals refer to it, Is-Serkin. Conveniently located on your way to the old capital city of Mdina, make a pit stop here for breakfast or a snack before heading in to explore the medieval silent city.

ĦOBŻ BIŻ-ŻEJT Maltese bread is something that is loved by both locals and visitors to the island, and the best version is the classic and simple ħobż biżżejt. Literally translated as ‘bread with oil’ it includes a few more ingredients in reality: generally a mix of tomato paste (or fresh tomatoes rubbed into the bread) and an assortment of ingredients including capers, olives, garlic, olive oil, tuna and fresh herbs. Ask any local and they’ll tell you that the best place to enjoy ħobż biż-żejt is on the beach, with many families preparing it at home and taking it along as a delicious seaside snack. ➜

And if you’re really looking to go down the local route when it comes to beach food, follow with dessert: a couple of slices of juicy watermelon. FISH AND SEAFOOD Being an island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, it should come as no surprise that fish and seafood feature heavily on local menus at this time of the year. If you’re looking to sample some delicious fresh fish during your stay, I’d recommend heading over to the quaint fishing village of Marsaxlokk or the neighbouring seaside village of Marsascala in the south-eastern part of Malta. Both villages boast a wealth of eateries along the seafront in which you can feast on the catch of the day, all while enjoying the mild sea breeze as you watch passersby stroll along the promenade.

ROMANTIC DINNER There’s nothing quite like the quiet streets of Valletta or Mdina if you’ve got a romantic evening with your partner in mind. Lit only by street lights once the sun has gone down, the atmosphere is unique, giving the cities an air of romance when night falls. Take a stroll through the historical streets and discover some of the delightful eateries both Valletta and Mdina have to offer – just perfect for an intimate têteà-tête with your significant other.

BURGERS While we do love our traditional fare on the Maltese islands, there’s still room for some favourites borrowed from elsewhere, and this year can arguably be called the year of the burger. Stepping away from its humble days as bland fast food you can get at a greasy diner or roadside kiosk however, things have taken a gourmet turn, with a number of premium burger outlets setting up shop and drawing in the crowds. One of the areas in which you’ll find quite a few of these places is St Julian’s, mainly thanks to its popularity with the younger generations, though the burger also remains a firm beachside barbecue favourite if you’re lucky enough to have been invited to one! ➜

CUISINE TRADITIONAL FTIRA No trip to the sister isle of Gozo is complete without stopping at one of the old bakeries for a traditional Gozitan ftira. Imagine a partly closed pizza made using bread dough, which is soft and pillowy on the inside, and delightfully crunchy on the outside – that’s as close you’ll get to imagining a ftira without experiencing it yourself. While there are a number of toppings you can choose from, it is traditionally topped with sliced potatoes, onions and ricotta cheese, and if you’re looking for a little extra kick, add some tasty Maltese sausage. ICE-CREAM The Maltese islands are blessed with warm weather for most of the year – a feature that attracts many a sun worshipping tourist to our shores

every year. The summer months can get very hot indeed however, and a refreshing drink or cold treat is a welcome balm when the temperatures start to soar. A favourite treat among kids and adults alike is ice-cream, and the perfect spot to get it (if not on

the beach) is the bustling seafront town of Sliema. Go for a stroll along the popular promenade and you’ll run into a number of kiosks and ice-cream parlours that are perfect for a refreshing ice-cream along the way.

BUSES The public transport services offered in the Maltese islands operate on a network offering multiple connections and main termini in Malta’s capital, Valletta, and Gozo’s capital, Victoria. A total of 80 different routes link the different localities in Malta to either major hubs such as Valletta, Mater Dei Hospital and the airport or to other destinations, while 15 routes operate in Gozo. The public transport service runs daily between 5.30am and 11pm, with express routes (designated with an ‘X’) having limited stops and operating to and from the airport from different localities. Three digit routes link different localities together and, in most cases, do not serve Valletta. A journey planner, timetable information and details on bus fares are available at www.publictransport.com.mt More details on T: 2122 2000.

TRAVELLING TO GOZO A regular ro-ro ferry service carries passengers and cars between Malta and Gozo. The trip takes about 30 minutes. For information and timetables contact The Gozo Channel Company on T: 2210 9000. CAR HIRE Most international car hire companies have a branch in Malta. Local companies too offer this service, with or without a chauffeur. Car hire rates are very reasonable compared to those in other European countries. TAXIS All taxis are fitted with meters and should charge government-controlled prices. Any complaints should be addressed to the Public Transport Authority, T: 2143 8475. Over recent months, a number of private companies have also been set up to offer competitive chauffeur-driven services.
