M

Welcome to the Maltese islands!

ost of us tend to take our homeland for granted and many a time we are made aware or perhaps reminded of its beauty and appeal when highlighted by foreigners or visitors. This issue of Guide Me, in fact, takes a look at the Maltese islands from the eyes of non-natives and reveals several of their charms and draws. Inigo Taylor, a talented photographer born in England and currently residing in Malta who describes himself as “a foreigner but also a local” due to his “relationship with Malta and Gozo going back so long,” has captured the Maltese and their way of life in an intriguing documentary photography project

that is fast gaining popularity. His interview with Sarah Micallef on page 44 is a great read. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were also taken by the islands to the extent that they chose Gozo as a backdrop for their upcoming movie ‘By the Sea’ – filming will start at the end of August. The movie is reportedly written and directed by Jolie herself, and will feature the couple as husband and wife. This and other interesting news bites are featured in our ‘News’ section that starts on page 25. Our ‘Cover Story’ also throws light on Malta as seen by foreigners. The islands have recently featured extensively on popular websites

and were lauded for their beautiful scenery and incredible history. The article starts on page 18. This issue of Guide Me is full of other interesting reads, ranging from Martina Said’s overview of the island’s best beaches (see page 74) to an article on the local viticulture trade (see page 79) as well as Sarah Micallef ’s fashion advice on the trendiest beachwear to stand out in this summer (see page 59) to a run-through of the top nighttime events (see page 101). hile just a speck in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and hardly noticeable on a world map, Malta has been making its way onto a number of popular websites in the last months, gaining recognition internationally for its picturesque scenery and notable heritage sites. Sarah Micallef takes a look at the most recent areas to make waves online.

In June, the Maltese islands served as backdrop for a shoot on online luxury website Net-a-Porter – a mere few days after a now-famous pictorial feature heavily praising Malta on Buzzfeed took local social media by storm, prompting some to start a campaign to bring the writer, Erin Chack (who has never visited Malta) here on holiday. Various locations and aspects of Maltese culture and heritage are increasingly being celebrated on a host of well-known sites – these are some of the latest.

A fashionable backdrop The cover story in the June issue of The Edit, Net-a-Porter’s magazine, features an interview with model, actress and documentary director Elisa Sednaoui Dellal. The accompanying colourful and eclectic shoot by photographer Koray Birand was taken in various locations within the Maltese islands, with some shots featuring distinctive elements of local culture and heritage.

The gorgeous Elisa is pictured alongside (and within) a traditional Maltese bus, strolling across a quaint cobbled street, and hanging out with a salt merchant at the salt pans (presumably in Gozo) and a fisherman aboard a traditionally colourful Maltese luzzu, as well as looking hot (in more ways than one) in a number of picturesque seaside locations. One can safely say that the scenic location and stunning model complement each other to perfection.

An awe-inducing destination New York-based Buzzfeed writer Erin Chack’s enthusiastic descriptions of a number of scenes around Malta and Gozo put a smile on many a local’s face in June, not just due to patriotism, but also thanks to her humorous style. Acknowledging the fact that, unlike countries like Italy and Greece, most readers will be unfamiliar with Malta, she declares that it’s still “got it going on”. Several beautiful beaches, the Azure Window in Gozo, traditional luzzi in Marsaxlokk, UNESCO World Heritage site and Malta’s capital city Valletta, traditional balconies and typical quaint alleyways all make an appearance and receive the writer’s admiration, so it’s no wonder a group of locals decided to add Maltese hospitality to the list and start a crowd funding attempt: #GetErin2Malta. ➜

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to start filming movie ‘By the Sea’ in Gozo this August

lobal superstars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, together with their family, will be heading to Malta for eight weeks towards the end of August to film their first film together since the action comedy Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, which also marked the start of their romance. They will reportedly reside in Gozo for the duration of their stay, after choosing Mġarr ix-Xini as the location of their new film ‘By the Sea’. The Hollywood couple stopped over in Malta for 36 hours to scout ➜

NEWS for locations for their film earlier in summer, and were spotted enjoying a tour of the coastline of Gozo aboard a yacht. Malta was just one among a number of countries that the actors had shortlisted for filming. The surroundings of Mġarr ix-Xini are characterised by high rocks, a secluded beach and clear waters which are ideal for underwater photography. Although no details have been revealed about the film so far, it is believed to be an experimental, independenttype love story written by Angelina Jolie herself. The bay, which is a Natura 2000 site, being an area of high ecological importance, will be closed between the end of August and mid-October while in use for filming. A makeshift structure resembling a house is currently under construction, which is believed to form part of the set for the film. The couple were last on the islands in 2011, when Brad Pitt was busy filming his blockbuster film, World War Z. During their stay in Malta, Jolie was promoting refugee causes as part of her work as a UNHCR ambassador, although Pitt had been here previously for the filming of Troy in 2003, in which he played the role of Achilles. Malta’s Prime Minster, Joseph Muscat, expressed his satisfaction upon the confirmation that Gozo was the star couple’s chosen location, saying that the film will put Gozo on the map and serve as a very good advert for the island. Malta Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech said in an interview that one pivotal factor which makes Malta an attractive filming location for international artists is the 25 to 27 per cent cash rebate on eligible expenditure in Malta.

Bruce Willis returns to Malta

O

ne of the famous faces on the Maltese islands this summer was Hollywood actor Bruce Willis, who visited Malta in June along with his Malta-born wife, Emma Heming Willis, a few days after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s 36-hour scouting visit to the islands. This is not the actor’s first time in Malta, having last visited in 2008. He reportedly stayed at his wife’s family’s home in the village of Siġġiewi during his short stay.

Applicants signing up for the IIP programme are expected to pay €650,000, as well as an additional €25,000 for spouses and individual children below 18 years of age, or €50,000 for dependant parents aged 55 or over and unmarried children aged between 18 and 25. T

he Malta Environment and Planning Authority has published a new policy framework for evaluating and processing planning applications for the design of tall buildings, defined as buildings with a height of over ten floors. The policy establishes a number of criteria for a tall building project to be considered, namely that the site where a tall building project is proposed must be within the designated locations identified and must occupy a completely detached urban block surrounded by existing or planned streets. “The proposed building needs to satisfy a high quality design, such that it can become an icon of architectural quality that can make a positive contribution to the urban form and skyline, and support regeneration,” the Authority expressed. Tall buildings may be built in Marsa, Gżira and Mrieħel predominantly for office uses, and the Qawra peninsula, Paceville and Tigné peninsula predominantly for tourism and leisure uses. Mediumrise buildings may be built in St Julian’s, Sliema, Gżira, Msida, Pieta, Marsa, the urban areas of Buġibba and Qawra, St Paul’s Bay, Marsascala and the Freeport area, but the use should be restricted to offices only and the maximum overall height of the mediumrise building should not exceed 25 metres. ➜

he Maltese real estate market is not only an investment opportunity that is worth exploring, it is a fantastic destination where investors may enjoy their pied-à-terre for at least nine months throughout a calendar year. The added bonus is a rising capital appreciation as well as knowing that since Malta has one of Europe’s most buoyant rental markets, your place in the sun can be occupied and earning a solid rental income of anything between four to seven per cent. There aren’t many markets today that can boast such a steadily growing industry. Malta’s social environment is also attractive to the expatriate. Besides having all types of entertainment at your fingertips and the Mediterranean Sea at your doorstep, there are several other foreign nationals enjoying the Maltese lifestyle already. Most are living in Malta due to work engagements, have become residents or retirees or have simply relocated to take advantage of the tax benefits that are available in Malta.

Many foreigners opt to purchase or rent a property in the central areas of Malta. These towns include Sliema, St Julian’s and the surrounding areas that form part of the coastal resort stretch. Special designated areas in Malta allow foreign nationals to purchase more than one property in Malta and have become very popular. These different lifestyle developments are top notch upmarket villas, apartments and maisonettes, and are still affordable.

WEDDINGS

Our wedding in Malta Laura and Scott Capindale from Lincoln, UK, relive their Maltese wedding. “After getting engaged in one of the most beautiful villages in France, on the banks of the River Dordogne, Scott and I knew we wanted a romantic, intimate wedding to match this occasion. When we returned home our research began, initially looking at venues in France and Italy until we were persuaded by several sources to consider Malta. From here we stumbled across a wedding planner, Sarah Young, who quickly responded to our email with a host of options. “We had never been to Malta before but were so impressed with Sarah’s efficiency and suggestions that we arranged to visit St Julian’s in May last year. From the instant we arrived, our hearts were captured

by the blend of village charm with the plethora of cosmopolitan bars and restaurants, and the luxurious Portomaso marina. After meeting Sarah and viewing the sea view villa we had selected as a potential venue, we had no doubt that this was exactly what we were looking for, particularly with the almost guaranteed sunshine! “We booked our wedding for June 2014, and prior to this Sarah gave us lots of ideas and made the whole planning process so easy. We arrived four days before our wedding day and met with Sarah and her team again to finalise the arrangements and legal duties which took all the stress away, knowing that everything was in hand. Our ceremony took place in a

private outdoor area with spectacular views of the sea and a clear blue sky, followed by a stand up reception with champagne and canapés. “We then dined al fresco on a private terrace with 17 guests, all of whom fell in love with Malta just as we did and described the whole experience as exceptional. Everything from the flowers, the food, the photographer and the guitarist to the hairdresser was perfect. Sarah and her team managed every aspect of our wedding, paying great attention to detail. We enjoyed every second of our special day – both Malta and Sarah Young exceeded our every expectation and we will definitely be back again soon.”

TAKE NOTE

Valletta Waterfront:

the historic destination with the coloured doors

H

istorically of great cultural and economic importance, the Valletta Waterfront has been restored and revitalised by the Valletta Cruise Port consortium to suit the ever-changing requirements of a dynamic Grand Harbour.

The Valletta Waterfront combines food, retail and entertainment outlets within a maritime hub, which for the past 12 years has proved to be a highly popular destination. For those in search of a relaxing evening of good food and entertainment, the Valletta Waterfront’s many restaurants and bars present a variety of offerings catering to different tastes, with dining right at the water’s edge. The establishments’ indoor dining areas are situated inside the tastefully refurbished, historical

38

stores, originally constructed by Grand Master Pinto in 1752. Today, ushering in a modern era, the iconic doors have been revived with an artistic impression of colour, representing the storage of goods from days past, with blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat and red for wine. Browse the shopping outlets for interesting gifts – from jewellery to that book you’ve been meaning to buy, hand-made ceramics, local glass and more. The small chapel of the Flight to Egypt by the Holy Family further creates a unique ‘village’ ambience. A recent addition to the Valletta Waterfront is a children’s area, with additional roaming children’s animation along the promenade. INTERVIEW

Photographing The Maltese Sarah Micallef chats to photographer Inigo Taylor about The Maltese – a documentary photography project that offers an unadulterated look at Maltese people and life on the islands today. Photos by Inigo Taylor

44

INTERVIEW Two old-timers, expressive faces crinkled with age, discuss politics or the weather, as they sit in the shade on a low wall on the side of the road. A group of small children chase each other round at a village feast, dodging onlookers and band members as their hair and clothes are coated in colourful confetti. A wisened grandmother furrows her brow as she searches for change in a large battered purse teeming with papers, receipts and crumpled photos of family members. Such scenes trigger something within the psyche of a Maltese local. Evocative of a way of life and a distinct character, they are scenes which are unequivocally Maltese, and are what photographer Inigo Taylor seeks to capture and document through his project: The Maltese. Originally from Lincolnshire in England, Inigo began his relationship Inigo Taylor with the Maltese islands as a boy, spending childhood summers in his grandparents’ house in Gozo. He began taking photography seriously at 15, travelling to countries like India and Morocco and taking photos along the way. It was during his second year at university – where he studied photography – that his parents decided to make the move to Malta, and once his course was over, he followed suit. That was four years ago. Inigo’s photography project, The Maltese, features street photographs of real people in the Maltese islands, taken over his years in Malta and

Gozo. “Primarily I’m interested in photographing people and reality,” he states, “I’ve got respect for all different types of photography, but for me, what I get the most from is seeing something happening in front of me and putting it across – preserving it, even if it is just for me to see.” Making a distinction between documentary photography and photojournalism, Inigo explains that there is a blur between the two: “often a photojournalist and a documentary photographer are the same, however a documentary photographer takes a long time to look at something and build a body of work that says something about what they’re interested in or what they feel they need to express. I’ve always been interested in documentary photography.” Asked about what it is about the Maltese people in particular that captures his attention, Inigo explains, “Maltese people are expressive. It’s about gesticulation and how they move.” Speaking of how he selects subjects to photograph in a given situation, he says “you look at somebody and get a feeling that a particular person is a character. Sometimes it’s as simple as liking where that person is standing in the context of what they’re doing. It’s a feeling.” Aside from the expressiveness of the people, Inigo also believes that Malta is at an interesting place culturally. “Malta is an amazing place for me as a photographer. ➜ 45

INTERVIEW

“When I go to a feast, I rarely photograph statues; I turn around and photograph the people.”

46

I’m very lucky to live here because it is in such a unique situation at the moment – there’s so much happening but there’s also so much tradition and heritage, which together is really interesting.” Likening his chosen type of photography to a mirror, Inigo believes that it reflects “what Malta is like now” through his eyes. Indeed, he considers the project a celebration of Malta and the Maltese way of life. Shying away from more conventional shots depicting Malta, Inigo expresses a preference for what he calls the more real, sometimes gritty side to life on the islands. He explains, “I don’t want my work to be a postcard book of nostalgic pictures, I want to get everything. As much as I love photographing fisherman with their boats and that sort of thing, there are modern things – like kids at carnival with funny haircuts – that are equally ‘Malta’. When I go to a feast, I rarely

photograph statues; I turn around and photograph the people.” Speaking of the project, the Facebook page for which impressively amassed over 5,000 likes in a matter of months, Inigo maintains, “I’ve been at it for so long that for years, in my head, I hadn’t started the project. In actuality, over the years, I was building up this work. By no means is it finished, but what I want to say is so simple that I had a body of work building up and didn’t realise it.” Admitting that he initially didn’t intend on sharing his work via Facebook, Inigo has found the positive response encouraging. “It took off really quickly. I’ve had Maltese people in New York and Australia send me messages saying how amazing it is to see Malta and how varied and diverse it is, and where it’s going. As a photographer, like any artist or creative person, you think, ‘is it good enough?’ This platform has given me a real boost and gave me confidence in it.” His ultimate goal with The Maltese is to compile his work into a book. “As a photographer so far I’ve done lots of work but I haven’t got something that I can say ‘that’s what I did, that’s what I said’. That’s what I really want – to have something finished to share with people, and not just on the internet or in a portfolio, but something that people can ultimately buy and look at, and can either come to Malta as a tourist and take away as a piece of Malta; or Maltese people can buy and be proud of, and send to their relatives abroad.” Indeed, the most touching response to his project so far, he asserts, has come from Maltese ➜

people who have not been here in years, and “within it they see some of the idiosyncrasies of Malta, or something beautiful like a little girl running around at a feast, which can remind them of when they were little children running around at a feast. It took me a long time to realise it but that is, for me, what documentary photography is.” And despite, by his own admission, it being to a certain extent looking at Malta through the eyes of a foreigner, he also feels as if the Maltese islands have, in a sense, adopted him. “With my relationship with Malta and Gozo going back so long, I’m a foreigner but also a local. This is my home – I don’t feel that anywhere else is home anymore.”

The importance of education in tourism in Malta According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the total contribution of travel and tourism to employment in Malta last year was 45,500 jobs (26.4 per cent of the total employment) and is expected to rise by four per cent this year. This clearly demonstrates the importance of investing in tourism education so as to produce professionals in different fields of the industry. Although tourism and hospitality is in the DNA of the Maltese, tourism education should start from early stages of schooling, considering its importance to the Maltese economy.

LOOK HOT ON THE BEACH Moeva

From a flattering swimsuit that will boost your confidence to the perfect accessories to make it pop, look hot on the beach this summer with Sarah Micallef’s selection of top beach trends for 2014.

Simple string bikini A classic that never goes out of style, the string bikini is a staple on beaches year in, year out. Whether you choose to opt for bold colours, patterns or neutral black or white, you really can’t go wrong with a string bikini, provided you’ve got the confidence to pull it off! One-shoulder The one-shoulder trend that is so popular right now extends to the beaches, with one-shoulder swimsuits and bikinis popping up everywhere. Adding an elegant touch to your swimwear, a one-shoulder piece is also flattering on most body types, though may require a little extra support if you’ve got a larger bust.

Sporty swimmer Another instance in which a fashion trend has extended to swimwear, sports luxe swimsuits provide an ultra-modern look. Go down the athletic route with swimwear that features mesh, zippers or bold colours this summer – most pieces also have the added benefit of great coverage, and will stay put, even during a raucous game of beach volleyball. Skin-baring cut-outs If you love the idea of a one-piece but don’t necessarily want to cover up, cutout swimsuits or sheer details could be just what you’re after. Certainly making for a more interesting shape, cut-out swimwear is sure to have you cut a fashionable figure – but beware of awkward tan lines!

Retro high-waist Channel your inner ‘50s siren by opting for a high-waisted bikini, which reveals the smallest part of your waist for a flattering silhouette. Look out for added retro details like a delicate belt or moulded bra top that will really bring the look to life. ➜

Bandeau babe The best way to achieve an even tan line across your shoulders is a bandeau bikini or strapless swimsuit. Another one you may want to avoid if you have an ample chest (or risk malfunctions), fun details like ruching, twisting and ruffles can add depth and curves to this style if your frame is a little boyish. ‘90s high-neck A combination of the sporty and ‘90s trends which are big in fashion at the moment, the high-neck swimsuit or bikini is a new shape on the block, but is fast gaining ground. A high-neck bikini could even balance out barely-there bikini bottoms. Beachy bustier Borrowed from the bedroom, bustier bikinis – with a top that hits low on the ribcage while giving your cleavage a boost – will bring out your inner vixen. Go retro with a pair of high-waisted bottoms or mix up proportions with something a little more daring. 60

s summer reaches its peak, the sea – and its refreshing comfort – is what we crave the most for that ultimate cool-down. Martina Said uncovers the best beaches in town, just as Maltese waters have been deemed ‘excellent’ by an EU Environment Agency Report.

For many people seeking a sun-drenched holiday spent enjoying wonderful beaches and sea-related activities, the quality of the water they’ll be bathing in will certainly feature high on the list of requirements. Luckily for those travellers heading to the Maltese islands for their summer holiday, quality swimming water is exactly what they’ll find. A report published in May this year by the European Environment Agency, which assessed bathing water quality in 2013 in all EU member states as well as Albania and Switzerland, ranked Malta’s sea water second cleanest for bathing, preceded by Cyprus. Maltese

waters were deemed ‘excellent’ and surpassed other countries such as Croatia and Greece which followed closely, as well as Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain among others which were rated as ‘poor’. The ratings are based on levels of two types of bacteria which indicate pollution from sewage or livestock which could cause illness if swallowed, therefore focusing predominantly on the cleanliness and quality of bathing sites in relation to human health rather than litter, pollution and other aspects that harm ecosystems. However, seeing as Malta’s bathing waters were classified ‘poor’ until a few years ago, it is clear that investment in modern waste

LIFESTYLE water treatment facilities to treat sewage before it is dumped at sea has pushed Malta significantly up the scale. The quality of Malta’s bathing waters has also undoubtedly contributed towards a thriving diving industry, which was recently recognised and rewarded at two award ceremonies in London. The Diver Awards named the islands as the second ‘Best Diving Destination’, making it the top diving location in the Mediterranean, voted by readers of Diver magazine and its website. Egypt was awarded first place, but Malta surpassed the Maldives which placed third, due to the range of exciting wrecks and the variety of marine life existing around the islands. Sport Diver Awards also recognised the Maltese islands as the runner-up Best Destination and awarded a local dive centre for ‘Best Customer Service’ and runner up for ‘Best Overseas PADI Dive Centre’. For underwater lovers, taking a look at what lies beneath is a definite must, as Malta’s waters are some of the clearest you’ll get, with great visibility

down to around 30 metres, and with a variety of colourful marine life that guarantees a spectacular experience. Santa Maria caves in Comino are popular with divers of all abilities, although Reqqa Point in Għasri and the Blue Hole in Dwejra, Gozo, should feature high on your list of underwater sites to visit if you’re an avid scuba diver. Alternatively, Għar Lapsi – located just outside Siġġiewi – offers a great cave dive that is ideal for beginners who can ascend 15 metres to the reef, as well as for seasoned divers curious to explore the natural wonders of the Għar Lapsi cave. You needn’t stay beneath the waves to enjoy the islands’ many beaches in all their splendour however – spending a day lying back on the sand or beside a rocky shore is a pleasing experience in itself. A number of very popular beaches are located north-west of the island, including Golden Bay, which is set within a cliff face and located along unspoiled and undeveloped countryside. Surrounding cliffs make it perfect for snorkelling, and a range of water sport services are available for thrill-seekers. ➜ 75

One of the most popular bays is undoubtedly Mellieħa Bay, or Għadira, which is the largest sandy beach on the island, followed closely by Riviera Bay, or Għajn Tuffieħa, Ġnejna Bay and Paradise Bay. Mellieħa Bay is one of the most easily accessible and familyfriendly beaches, as water is ankle-deep for a few good metres, making it ideal for children to play and splash around in while parents can keep an eye out. It also boasts the widest selection of water sports and activities, including windsurfing, canoeing and kite surfing, and even has a blow-up water platform for children to play on out at sea.

If you’d rather beat the crowds, however, it would be worth your while to visit St Peter’s Pool at the tip of Delimara point in the southwest of Malta – it is a beautiful, natural swimming pool with clear waters and available ladders to access the sea, although adventurous swimmers could jump off the cliffs a few metres up. Be sure to take supplies with you here as its remote location makes it devoid of any nearby shops, restaurants or facilities.

Besides the beautiful Blue Lagoon in Comino, you must also visit Gozo’s wonderful beaches, namely Ramla l-Ħamra with its grainy red-tinged sand, and the picturesque Mġarr ix-Xini, which is secluded, tranquil and rich in aquamarine life. One of the most popular beaches on this island, however, is Ħondoq ir-Rummien, located below Qala on the southern coast of Gozo. The sea is a stunning azure shade, enjoys a pleasant view of Comino and boasts a beautiful coastline dotted with salt pans that are still in use.

WINE & DINE

A time-tested tradition

A

novelist once said that wine is bottled poetry, and it’s not hard to understand why, as each bottle bears its own character that is derived from the grape with which it is made. Martina Said delves into the local, ever-growing trade of viticulture.

Nothing depicts the beauty of Mediterranean living better than a wonderfully chilled or heartwarming glass of wine (generally accompanied by delicious local food). And, seeing as the Maltese islands are situated right in the heart of the Mediterranean, it is no surprise that local winemaking has come a long way since its humble start. Wine production on the islands dates back thousands of years to the times of the Phoenicians, until two wineries established themselves as the front-runners of wine production towards the end of the previous century. As the trade began to be viewed more seriously and international grape varieties started being planted here, the industry boomed and the demand for Maltese wine began to increase. Bill Hermitage, Operations Manager at Emmanuel Delicata Winemaker Ltd, says that it is only in the last 20 years that wine-making in Malta has been approached scientifically, using modern viticultural techniques with the aim of producing authentic, locally produced wine from Malta-grown grapes. “These efforts have been

viewingmalta.com/Mario Galea

driven by Maltese winemakers, in particular Emmanuel Delicata, who pioneered a ‘Vines for Wines’ project to teach the farming community how to grow indigenous and international grape varieties using the very best modern and sustainable practices. Today, there are hundreds of vineyards spread throughout Malta and Gozo with skilled growers, thanks to this scheme.”

There are around 25 different grape varieties planted and growing throughout the islands, two of which are indigenous to Malta: “the white Girgentina, which makes good, crisp dry whites and the red Ġellewża, which produces excellent, fruity rosé wines. The international varieties are nearly all performing very well, but in some cases it is still a little bit early to tell, as ➜ 79

many of these vines are still in their infancy, ‘viticulturally’ speaking.” Bill says that while they all produce good wines, the best results would be vines that produce grapes with good varietal characteristics, but with a unique Maltese twist. “For instance, Malta grown Sauvignon Blanc produces a delicious white wine (Gran Cavalier) that has all the attributes of an old-world and a new-world Sauvignon Blanc all rolled into one; whereas the locally grown Sangiovese grape (Medina) has all the characteristics of a good Tuscan Sangiovese, but with a little hint of black pepper, making it truly unique.” He believes that the Maltese viticultural industry has changed dramatically in the last two decades, augmented by the liberalisation of the wine market when Malta joined the EU in 2004, which Mr Hermitage believes was a real wake-up call for Maltese winemakers and grapegrowers alike. “Even though Malta can never hope to compete on a ‘level playing field’, ten years on Maltese

80

wine is still selling well, to both the Maltese population and tourists alike. And as long as winemakers keep investing, improving and selling, Maltese viticulture should do well and the green vineyards that now cover our islands during the hot summer months should continue to flourish.” Josef Bonello of Vini e Capricci in Gozo, distributors of quality foods and wines, considers the local wine scene to be somewhat unique for the diversity of international

wines available for us to buy. “Bar the UK, it is highly unlikely you’ll find anywhere else in Europe with so many different international wines and top brands so readily available in such a small area. Even local wines are growing in stature and the tiny island of Gozo is leaving its mark too.” He agrees that local wine production is definitely being taken more seriously thanks to the pioneering efforts of the early big wineries as well as today’s smaller, ➜

WINE & DINE ambitious wine aficionados. “We are most happy, however, that wine appreciation is growing, which means that wine is not only being seen as another alcoholic beverage but it is being enjoyed as a unique agricultural drink with a tremendous and ancient history.” Josef says that the Maltese islands are blessed with a climate that helps reap excellent results – long, dry summers and mild winters which allow the grapes to ripen gently, especially with the cooling capacity of the surrounding Mediterranean Sea. “Some of the best wine-producing grapes are the everpresent Chardonnay, which can produce some top notch examples here with a full-bodied feel and powerful palate; Vermentino, which is a rather recent variety and has done extremely well with its citric, crisp wines, as well as our very own Girgentina which produces

light drinking wines and makes for an ideal blending partner with some bigger whites.” As for red wines, he considers Merlot and Syrah to be two of the better performing red varieties, while the indigenous Ġellewża has also witnessed a revival of late and is being taken more seriously now than ever before. While it could be enjoyed alone, wine is generally well-appreciated with a scrumptious meal, which is where the art of pairing wine with food comes in. Josef says that wine and food pairing is often taken a step too far, or limited too much. “There is one cardinal rule

to keep in mind: the wine and the food must complement each other and not overpower the other. Hence, a delicate fish will be best appreciated with a soft white, which will not drown the refined flavours of the food like a rich red would. Equally, a juicy steak will require a full red to be able to bring out a delightful synergy of flavours – a light white would leave no impact at all. Otherwise, our recommendation is that true wine lovers experiment and find out for themselves – follow these basic suggestions and leave it up to the food and wine to do the magic.”

Angelica: relaxed eating and drinking all day, 7 days a week in Valletta

Food and travel writer Mona Farrugia runs ‘Top 10 in Malta’ eatery Angelica in Valletta. She loves the city and food, and you can feel this in every dish she serves. I am simply in love with the possibilities and excitement of travel. I absolutely love food: buying, cooking and eating it. So these days, I usually plan my holiday around restaurants. This is possibly why I decided to open our first Angelica in Archbishop Street. In the shadow of the magnificent Presidential Palace, around the corner from St George’s Square (the one with the dancing fountain) our tiny restaurant bedecked in purples

and greens gives to our wonderful customers that which I seek whenever I go abroad: an authentic experience, outstanding food, a fantastically happy ambiance and genuinely friendly, informed service. Every night people make friends around the tables with people they have never seen before. We call it ‘The Angelica Way’. Our food is packed with local colour and flavour: fresh calamari stuffed with whatever is in season, Maltese artisanal sausage from the Food Market up the road, our rabbit in champagne, crisp yet soft, so good it has been, over and over, called ‘the best rabbit in Malta’. That explains why we are always getting mega celebrities

who love Valletta popping by: they feel as relaxed and happy as all our lovely customers. The excitement of travel, discovery and eating is what Angelica is all about.

Malta

a history buff’s haven

Mdina Bastions - Photo: viewingmalta.com

Malta has sometimes been described as ‘The Cradle of Civilisation’ on account of its many ancient Megalithic temples consisting of Ħaġar Qim, Ġgantija Temples, Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, Mnajdra Temples, Skorba Temples, Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples and Tarxien Temples, to mention the best known examples. Indeed the temples at Ġgantija are among the oldest freestanding buildings in the world, dating to approximately 3,700BC. Granted, Malta’s appeal to many is its sunny temperate climes, crystalclear blue seas, varied nightlife, delicious cuisine and friendly people. But for those who are interested in history, Malta is a veritable trove of fascinating historical material. See the imposing bastions

which the legendary Knights of St John constructed to protect Malta’s ports and cities from attacks by the Ottoman Turks, the most furious of which came in 1565. Queen Elizabeth I remarked at the time: “if the Turks should prevail against the isle of Malta, it is uncertain what further peril might follow to the rest of Christendom.” Of course we know that the attack was successfully repelled, but the fear and anticipation that prevailed before the onslaught must have been almost tangible. You can see the weapons, armour and sites, and walk the very same paths used by the Knights in those brutal days. If you want to know more, an array of varied historical guided tours can be found on www.excursionsinmalta.com where

history buffs can pick and choose from the many fascinating guided excursions available. The guides themselves are extremely professional and happy to answer individual questions. And, let’s be honest; even history buffs enjoy a swim in crystalline fresh blue seas, rich in an array of sea life and offering some of the best dives in the Mediterranean. Follow that up with some delicious local delicacies and wine, and top it off with an evening of entertainment at some of the island’s top night spots! Truly, Malta is an all-rounder, a multi-faceted destination offering many things to many people. Old or young, whatever your interests, Malta is sure to have something to offer you during your unforgettable holiday here.
