Mesmerisingly beautiful both on stage and off, Lynne Salomone Reynaud is one of Malta’s most established ballerinas. Here she tells Jo Caruana all about her passions as a performer and her adoration for all things ‘dance’. P H OTO G R A P H Y: TO N I O L O M B A R D I • S T Y L I N G : S A R A H M I C A L L E F M A K E - U P : C H R I S AT TA R D U S I N G G U E R L A I N A N D C H A N E L F O R F R A N K S • H A I R : C H R I S G A L E A , M I C H A E L & G U Y C L O T H E S : C H A R L E S & R O N , T H E C O R I N T H I A P A L A C E H O T E L & S P A , AT TA R D J E W E L L E R Y : C L A S S I C J E W E L L E R S , V A L L E T TA O R S L I E M A • S H O T O N L O C AT I O N AT T H E M A N O E L T H E AT R E , V A L L E T TA

I believe some people are born on a particular path… to being a doctor, a lawyer or an artist. Lynne Salomone Reynaud was born on a path towards dance, and it is one she has followed with diligence and dedication since she was old enough to be signed up to ballet class. To me, a classmate, she’ll always be the pretty little ballerina who wowed us all in shows at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, but of course she is so much more than that. Her dancing path has taken her on an exciting journey of international collaborations and high calibre performances. Watching her dance today, it is clear to see that the passion she has had since childhood is one she has never looked back on, and one she was born to follow. This, in her words, is her story. Lynne wears: Zoccai ring in 18-carat gold with diamonds and a 7.8-carat amethyst, exclusively available at Diamonds International, €3,850.

STYLE 16 INTERVIEW

“My identity has always been tied to my practice. For as long as I can remember I have been known as ‘the ballerina’ or ‘the dancer’, and I think I always will be. “I believe my passion for classical dance and its discipline is what has influenced me to become a bit of a perfectionist, both inside and outside of the studio. Dance awakens a sensitivity within you and helps you to develop an ability to listen and understand one’s somatic and psychological state. “I am a very sensitive person, and find I burst into tears easily for both happy and sad events. I am also a very jovial person and absolutely love to laugh; I think people are also quite surprised by how clumsy I can be outside the dance studio! Dance is my form of meditation: I am focused, I am present and I am completely in the moment… It is my time to forget all my troubles and stresses, and to focus entirely on me. “I am very grateful for the career highlights I have had so far. For instance, I loved performing as a soloist in the Degas Ballet Company directed by Brigitte Gauci Borda, alongside foreign professionals in traditional ballets such as The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Paquita, Swan Lake and soon The Sleeping Beauty, which will be staged at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in December. I have also worked closely with other top local artists such as Tanya Bayona, and performed as a guest dancer for the YADA Dance Company and Moveo Dance Company, as well as international artists such as Mavin Khoo and the Paganini Dance Company. “When I was younger my training took me all over Europe, and beyond. I received scholarships to top schools in London, Scotland, Paris and Rome, and danced at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, at the National Opera House in Riga and with the YADA Dance Company in San Francisco. “Today I love working with younger dancers and enjoy my job as a teacher, a role I have held for over 10 years. My ventures into choreography, meanwhile,

feel as though they are just the beginning. I recently launched Malta Dance Theatre, a youth dance company in collaboration with Brigitte Gauci Borda, and for which I am artistic director. Lately, I also worked with Ira Losco on her single Me

One of my favourite shopping destination has to be Camden Market in London. I love the eclectic items on offer and the eccentric shops. Another favourite is Rome.

My ultimate style icon is Angelina Jolie; although I’m very versatile style-wise. In fact, I gravitate towards different looks and styles all the time. While in terms of dancing style icons, it would have to be the beautiful Sylvie Guillem.

look, with simple, clean lines – but it completely depends on my mood that day. “I love clothes but, somewhat surprisingly, am not very girly when it comes to choosing them. Comfort and warmth are important, of course, but I also like to feel the part, especially when I am dancing. If I am dancing classically, my hair will always be well groomed and my outfit appropriate; the right look is a very important part of ballet and its aesthetic, and I embrace that. “My next costume is now being created for my upcoming role as the Lilac Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty. The show has already been a pleasure to develop in rehearsal, especially while working with choreographer Erico Montes from the Royal Ballet in London, and I look forward to dancing with Claire Calvert, the principal ballerina who will be joining us in the role of Princess Aurora. A show of this size and calibre is always exciting, not least because we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Brigitte Gauci Borda School of Ballet, where I have worked for the past 11 years. This will be another wonderful opportunity to really live and breathe dance, which is something I always cherish. “My future, too, will certainly revolve around dance. I am currently completing my Masters in Performance Arts (Dance) at the University of Malta, and intend to travel so as to keep researching, learning and exploring all forms of movement. “Dance today has become a fusion of styles and techniques, blurring the barriers and boundaries between disciplines. I look forward to delving further and further into my knowledge of it, and to never waver from my path as ‘the ballerina’.” £

My character? I’m emotional, extremely sensitive, slightly neurotic and a bit of a perfectionist – which I think I developed through my classical training.

One thing people never assume about me is that I tend to be insecure. My favourite piece of clothing is a little red dress I own. When I wear it I feel impassioned and confident.

Name: John Micallef • Age: 60 Co-Driver: Monica Micallef Job: Company Director at Karta Convertors Ltd Car: Chevrolet Biscayne (1961)

John: “This 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne I have with me today has been in the family since 1962, when my father bought it. I was just a 10-year-old boy back then and it’s got some incredible memories attached to it. Eight years later I took my then-girlfriend, who is now my wife, to a wedding for our first proper date! One of my daughters was also driven in it to her wedding – another very special occasion. This car took over seven years to restore as I wanted everything to be done to exact specifications. Every item, including the paint, was brought over from America – and it was definitely worth it. Owning classic cars is an incredible feeling, and we believe in using ours whenever we can. As the president of the Maserati Club in Malta, we often participate in radunos with our Sicilian partner. In fact, we’ve also been to Sicily with this Chevrolet. It’s great to be able to drive them down the highways. It’s so freeing!” Monica: “I support John in his passion for classic cars. I also take pride in keeping the car shiny and clean! I believe it’s quite a fascinating hobby to have and we’ve made a lot of friends along the way. Moreover, we tend to share the same taste in cars, which is great.”

Ernest: “This love for cars has been with me my whole life, and it was all my brother’s doing, really. I used to tag along and he would question me on the car models passing us by, so I had to learn quickly. This was in the 60s and, significantly, the car I have with me today is a 1965 model. “My first car, which was a birthday present for my 18th, was a Mini 12275GT. I used to race it in hill climbs before I sold it off but, years later, I tracked it

down, bought it back and restored it. “Classic cars require passion and love – it is the detailing and the way they’re built that make them so special and give them character. They are also an investment, which makes this passion that much more exciting. Things are changing though, and I can’t imagine people restoring today’s cars in 30 to 40 years’ time. That’s why I believe that this is, sadly, a dying passion.” Odelle: “We love the social life that comes with classic-car ownership, and the Mdina GP is part of our annual social calendar. Claire: “Charles’s passion gives him something to do in his free time and it’s quite a good hobby to have. Also, while it’s not a cheap pastime, these cars are investment pieces, which makes them very special.”

Joe: “Back in the 70s, a member of my family bought a Jaguar Mark Two and, since then, I’ve been head over heels in love with Jaguars… I now own a number of cars and most of them are, obviously, Jags. My oldest is the Jaguar SS from 1935 and my most recent acquisition is the Jaguar XK8, which I received a few weeks ago. “There is something incredibly alluring about vintage cars – their feel is just different. Plus, when you’re driving a modern vehicle, most things are automatic, while a classic car requires your complete attention all the time. “The car I have with me today is my favourite and I raced with it in the legendary Mille Miglia, a four-day event which sees classic cars being driven from Brescia to Padova, then to Rome and finally back to Brescia in a 1,000-mile race. It was absolutely out of this world!” Agnes: “This is such a fascinating passion to have, and I’ve been interested in classic cars ever since Joe started his collection. I always go to see him race, and it runs in the family, too! In fact, our daughters will be taking part in today’s Mdina GP!” £

INTERVIEW 31 STYLE

125 years of Camilleriparismode Camilleriparismode has long been one of Malta’s best-loved brands, featuring a vast selection of beautiful, handpicked items for homes and lifestyles. Here Jo Caruana meets the family behind this local icon, as they celebrate their milestone 125th anniversary in business.

Those with a love of style will all know the Camilleriparismode brand. A beacon of chic sensibility on the local market, it has become renowned for presenting an unparalleled collection of beautiful things – from bone-china crockery and the highest-grade fabrics, to their own furniture designs and, even, the finest whiskey from all over the world.

Camilleriparismode’s three shops – in Sliema, Valletta and their Rabat flagship – have become destinations in their own right. They are places to peruse through the latest collections, to be inspired by singular designs, and to chat to the lovely team and Camilleri family members who consistently pour their hearts and souls into ensuring their brand promises unmatched

service and quality anywhere in Malta. Today, as all 49 members of the Camilleriparismode team celebrate the brand’s 125th anniversary, their ethos continues to evolve. They remain dedicated to providing an increased number of quality services, to promising value across price ranges, and to offering the latest in cuttingedge products from around the world.

STYLE 32 INTERVIEW

Right: Sunny and Lewis Camilleri. Below: The Camilleri Paris Mode team outside their Valletta shop in the 1970s.

Nevertheless, they are equally appreciative of their past, and this anniversary has given them the opportunity to delve even deeper into their family history. “The Camilleri business was founded in 1890, when my great-greatgrandfather Paolo Camilleri set up shop on Merchants Street, Valletta, selling clothes, accessories, handbags, hats and haberdashery items,” says Hannah Camilleri, who is Camilleriparismode’s marketing manager and one of the fifth generation of Camilleris now involved in the running of the shops. The name Camilleri Paris Mode was chosen to highlight the fact that the French capital was the height of glamour in the 1920s. Paolo certainly set the ball rolling, by implementing incredible retail foresight that is still evident in his descendants today. After his death in his 40s, Paolo was succeeded by his sons Carmelo and Giuseppe. Carmelo was then succeeded by his four sons, Paul and Joseph (both of whom unfortunately passed away at a young age), and Lewis and Sunny. Lewis and Sunny later took their nephews, Victor, Anthony and Franco, under their wing, and passed on their knowledge to them. Victor, Anthony and Franco still run the business today together with their children Andrew, Hannah, Mara, Mark and Paul. “If there’s one thing that we have always focused on, it’s quality,” says Mark. “We have developed so much over the last decades; our team has grown from 12 people to 49, and we have opened the shop up to a variety of new products, from interior and fashion fabrics to other items such as lighting, furniture, awnings and technical shading, tableware, perfumery, bridalwear and a variety of services. Our increased repertoire means that we have the resources to work on a number of contract projects which are also on the rise.” “Of course we have also built on our core range, namely our interior fabrics, our sewing and sofa-building services, not to mention our wide range of home accessories,” adds Paul. “The past few years

STYLE 34 INTERVIEW

have also seen the establishment of our design and projects office, which now boasts quite a portfolio of both residential and commercial projects, with a lot of more interesting projects in the pipeline!” “We will also shortly be launching our online shop, so as to make it easier than ever for our clients to peruse and purchase our products and to experience Camilleriparismode in the comfort of their own home. That said, it will be hard to replicate the feeling of being in one of the shops,” continues Andrew. Passion is also clearly injected into everything at Camilleriparismode. “I believe it is that passion that really sets us apart,” says Mara. “We never rest on our laurels – we’re constantly travelling to source the latest trends, and continuously change the shops around so as to best showcase our products. Nothing is too much trouble and we sometimes call ourselves Camilleriparismad – because there’s literally nothing that we wouldn’t do to provide our clients with absolutely the best!” Looking to the future, the family really are proud of their past – and hope to continue immortalising their ancestors’ dreams and ideas in the years to come. “It’s wonderful to know that there’s so much heritage behind our work and to be continuing such a legacy,” continues Hannah. “I regularly meet my friends’ grandparents and find they are eager to show me their curtains or upholstery and to tell me that they date back decades to when my greatgrandfather sold them to them! That longevity makes us all very proud, and it’s the sort of permanence that we still bring to every single item that we sell. Each product at Camilleriparismode tells our history, promises our passion and is something we believe will maintain its elegance and style for many years to come. This is the Camilleriparismode vision for today, and for the future.” £

My

personal

Favourite

Artists regularly create work for other people – but sometimes a piece is so special that they choose to keep it for themselves. Here, three of Malta’s top artists reveal the artworks they’ve chosen for their personal collections.

“A Work from Each Collection”

Photos by Julian Calabrese

Austin Camilleri is renowned for his stark abstract paintingS and awe-inspiring sculptures.

“I never really had a work I felt I couldn’t part with. After all, it’s the excitement and struggle of a new idea that I look forward to. I used to be fond of works that didn’t find a home after being exhibited; those less accepted, probably the most challenging, sort of prodigal progenies. But, systematically, they found another home. “Now, with the advent of parenthood, I realise that it would be too selfish not to keep at least one work from each collection, so I encourage my children to help me decide what should stay – this painting, titled You Used To Be So Definite, is one example. My home walls change frequently as artworks shift from studio to home to gallery and vice-versa very often. “In my recent practice, be it sculpture, painting or installation, I explore historicity. This painting, one of my son's favourites, was first exhibited in Valletta some five years ago. It is a large painting where multiple superimposed layers create a frictional plane between appropriation and authenticity. It’s a sort of reverse archaeology, where layers, sometimes even by different individuals, are laboriously added, to create tension. I like to think that my son loves the magnetism in it, but probably it’s because he knows exactly where on the canvas his own brush strokes are!”

“It’s hard to describe the emotion embedded in this painting. Toby died just after my other dog, Patsy, passed away and, right after all that, my other dog, Elsa, got ill. Anyone with a pet knows how close they become to the family and, after losing two dogs and fearing the loss of the third one, I became depressed. “Because this was a subject that was very close to my heart, it took months to finalise. In fact, I left it aside for ages before I finally finished it. I do that with a lot of my own paintings, but I think the story behind this one is what forced me to try too hard to get it right in the first place, and why I needed a break from it. “This picture of Toby is just one of many paintings I’ve created of the pets that I’ve lost. It stands proudly among other favourite paintings of mine, as well as a number of others by various artists friends, and a couple by my middle son George Eynaud, who is also an artist. “This is a painting of Toby in heaven!”

INTERVIEW 49 STYLE

“Too Beautiful to be Painted” PARTICULARLY WELL KNOWN FOR HIS LANDSCAPES AND ABSTRACTS, Pawl Carbonaro IS ONE OF MALTA'S MOST CELEBRATED ARTISTS. “Much as I have spent a good portion of my life in the mountains, particularly the Dolomites, using them as a subject in my paintings has always been a kind of taboo, for fear of falling into vulgarity. “Mountains are too beautiful to be painted, so, I always thought that they should be left well alone. Just living them is enough. I felt capturing mountains on canvas would be similar to bird trapping. “However, I have assiduously gazed and stared at and studied them thoroughly for over 40 years from my room with a view. Finally, last year, having a hotel room on Lake Thun in Switzerland, with the Eiger and the Jungfrau in the far background, and after numerous daily sketches, I found the time ripe enough for me to graduate with a mountain scene. “This particular one is probably the queen of a series of mountain scenes, which I have tackled lately, and one that is very close to my heart.” £

Luxury THE LATEST AUDi A1

in a small car... Style test-drives the ‘sophisticated premium’ Audi A1

photography by A lan carville

Buying a car is no easy feat, especially when the mind and the heart are expressing diametrically opposing views. A Saturday morning pit-stop at a cafeteria on the busy Sliema seafront is great for spotting the large volume of cars cruising along the promenade that have been bought simply because the mind won over the heart or vice-versa. Of course seeing a 300BHP two-seater sports car roaring along the busy streets of Sliema is a straight-forward case of the latter. Some though, allow the mind to rule and shut down their emotions – settling for a small city car that wins on convenience but lacks any sense of sophistication, prestige and premium feel is a case in point. The latest Audi A1 comes into the equation because it is the answer for many people who want (and can afford) a luxury sophisticated car and are after a premium brand but for obvious reasons (including traffic nightmares and parking headaches) would really love to opt for a smallish car.

What’s the concept?

A sophisticated premium small car. The small cars available by rival premium brands are either considerably larger (i.e. they fit in the Audi A3 category) or their pitch is totally different (at times too retro or clichéd). The A1 fits the bill perfectly for the growing segment of our population that wants a luxury premium car but at the same time wants a small, practical car that is easy to drive, park and handle, without compromising on the level of luxury, style and sophistication. The latest Audi A1 comes in a three-door or a five-door version and all models are very well-equipped with all the features that are normally associated with premium larger models. What Audi has done by creating (and now enhancing) the A1 is essentially killing the notion that luxury is only available in big cars.

On the outside…

Both the three-door version and the five-door version are visually very striking. Audi, perhaps contrary to rival brands, did not pursue the retro

On the inside…

route but instead opted for a creative design that is unique and original, yet relates to its larger posh siblings in the Audi range. The front grill and the sharp headlamps give the car that signature ‘Audi look-and-feel’ and the new model has strengthened and sharpened the front. The latest A1 gives prospective buyers the opportunity to mix and match different tones within a wider range of creative colours. In fact, we test-drove the entry model 1.0 TFSI manual model equipped with the Active Kit, which comes in glossy red with active décor foil roof, as well as side lines and rear in matt platinum grey.

The cabin is posh and classy. The feel on sitting at the wheel is that of a sophisticated premium brand and the materials used are evidently of a very good quality. The driving position is superlative for any size of driver and the car is surprisingly very generous in terms of space. The list of equipment that comes as standard is endless and includes climate control air conditioning, 15” five-arm design alloy wheels, Audi MMI – Concert Radio System, eight speakers, Bluetooth interface with audio streaming, driver information system, LED interior lighting package, rear parking sensors, day time running lights and much more. £

STYLE VERDICT

A very posh and sophisticated little car that carries the premium Audi badge. A car that gives you all that you expect from a premium brand. At €19,900 the Audi A1 is a must-have.

Now, add rosy cheeks. We recommend Guerlain’s Rose aux Joues – a new colour-revealing brush. Its pigments capture natural light and enhance your complexion’s natural pink hue in perfect affinity with the skin.

STEP

Bare skin was a must-have in the 90s. Embrace that by using a really good moisturiser, such as Guerlain’s Météorites Oxygen Care, which instantly revives your skin for long-lasting results. If needs be, top this with a light foundation or BB cream to cover blemishes and reveal a balanced complexion.

Finally, it’s all about that iconic berry lip. We chose Guerlain’s new Kiss Kiss Roselip No R374 (also from the Fall Collection), which is the brand’s first hydrating and plumping coloured lip balm infused with essential oil of rose. It promises that soft, natural glow, as well as that dynamic 90s colour. STEP

STEP

As we’re putting our focus on the lips, eyes can be kept simple. Opt for a light layer of eye shadow, such as Guerlain’s new 4-Colour Eye Shadow No 19 (from the Fall Collection), which perfectly complements a stronger lip. Complete your eyes with a simple slick of black mascara.

STEP

90s eyebrows were all about ‘girl power’. So, give yours some added pizazz with the Guerlain Eyebrow Kit, which structures and stylises all eyebrows for a tailored yet natural look. It includes three powders, a highlighter and a double applicator.

Achieving that 90s look is all about accentuating the lips or eyes – never both. If you pick ‘eyes’, lip liner is essential and best paired with bare lips – just like Posh Spice in her heyday!

The houses we’ve chosen this issue prove that the best things really can come in the smallest packages – for what they may lack in size, they certainly make up for in style and practicality.

INTERVIE WS BY JO CARUANA AND IGGY FENECH PHOTOGR APH Y BY AL AN C ARVILLE

Newlyweds DEAN and BECKY GERA originally planned to rent out their 45sqm Valletta maisonette – but soon fell so in love with it that they moved in themselves! We signed the promise of sale on this house just one year into our relationship. It was a bit of a gamble but, when you know something for certain, you just know – we adore the house and it has now become our first marital home. We originally thought it would make a great rental investment, and still do. But, having worked on so much of the design and conversion ourselves – and putting in so much blood, sweat and tears – we decided to move in and try it out. That was well over a year ago and we now love living here. It’s definitely proved that Valletta living is fantastic, and we plan to stay.

At just 45sqm, this house is really tiny so we faced a few design challenges. We kept the kitchen/ living/dining room really simple and minimalistic, and it works. There’s nowhere else to put anything though; we’ve actually bought a few pieces of furniture that have ended up in storage, for now. The fact that the bedroom is full size really helps. We’ve built floor-to-ceiling storage to maximise on wardrobe space, created a large storage bed, and opened up the Maltese balcony to flood the room with light. Somehow, despite its size, we never feel like we’re living on top of one another! Of course we do miss having outdoor space and would look for that in our next home. That said, Valletta is our outdoor space and we have really enjoyed making the most of exploring it so far.

Cultural strategist and theatre director TONI ATTARD has long wanted the perfect bachelor pad in Valletta. He found it in this one-bedroom, two-floor house, and has spent the last two years transforming it into an artistic haven. Valletta has been my hangout since my teens and I have been eager to buy here for a while now. After having a good look around I found this house – which was an office at the time – and thought I could move in immediately. It was only once I bought it that I realised quite how much work needed to be done, and it’s taken me nearly two years to complete. The house is split in two, with the kitchen, dining area, living room, guest toilet and entrance upstairs, and a good-sized bedroom and shower room downstairs. It may only be around 55sqm in size, but it really suits my needs. When you do up a small space, it makes sense to have everything customised, as you can then really make the most of it. Everything from the kitchen to the bedroom closet was built with specifications in mind, like hidden cupboards to conceal clutter. It took a while but the results are exactly what I wanted, as they make the most of every nook and

cranny. For instance, the kitchen table is on wheels and backs into the space under the window, with a bench underneath. When I am entertaining, out come the table and bench, so this table can comfortably fit six for dinner. The steel staircase is also totally bespoke. I knew I wanted to create a two-storey bookcase and shoe cupboard within the stairs, and my suppliers took some convincing. The result is just what I had in mind, and a real feature for the entrance hall. Openness is key and, despite the house being small, there’s still lots of space – so much so that I often hold rehearsals in the living room. I’ve also steered completely clear of doors, except for the glass door in the guest toilet. Designing this space actually felt a lot like designing a play set with multi-purpose roles for each piece – the only difference is that play

sets only need to last a few weeks at most, whereas this one needs to be around for quite a bit longer! Culture is central to my life and I have really enjoyed picking the artwork and pieces to accentuate each wall. I also love the door knockers, which I had designed to replicate two of my favourite masks.

Project manager JD FARRUGIA and inclusive coordinator FRANCESCA DIACONO welcome us into their two-bedroom, twobathroom converted courtyard in Siggiewi. We always knew we wanted a small house, but we were both dead-set on not living in an apartment. Turns out, it was actually the location that was difficult to get right, but this property was perfect – bang in the heart of Siggiewi but not too close to the commotion of the pjazza. When we bought it, it was already converted. The ground floor of this property is 500 years old and used to be a courtyard – it was part of the previously-adjoining houses. The second floor, meanwhile, was added some 250 years ago, while the latest additions have barely been here two years.

While doing it up, we had to sacrifice some space to help us deal with the humidity, and between the old walls and the new gypsum weatherboards there’s two inches of space to allow the walls to breathe. To counteract this, we decided to whitewash the walls and use grey flooring to make the house seem bigger. The skylight was something else we invested in as it lets both light and air in; we’re now working on turning the roof, which is quite a dead-space, into a roof garden. We find that the glass banisters also help to accentuate the space rather than make it smaller. Obviously, we do sometimes wish we had more storage and wardrobe space, maybe even space for a walk-in wardrobe, but, overall, we love this house! The ceilings are high and there’s a sense of openness about it, despite its size. This house proves that small-home living can be really comfortable, too. Our family members really like it and Francesca’s nanna calls it ‘the dolls’ house’. Its smaller size actually makes it so much easier to keep tidy and clean – which is fantastic! £

PROMOTION 67 STYLE

THE RENTAL INVESTment BOOM Malta is booming. There is a steady in-flow of people moving to the island for a range of reasons. Some come to work, some to set up business, some to establish residency, and others to study. All of these categories represent people moving to the island for prolonged periods, and although very different in budget and requirements, they have one thing in common – they need a place to live.

T

his demographic phenomenon has contributed to increased opportunities for rental investment for local and foreign owners alike. One of the most attractive aspects of this business opportunity is that a large range of different types of properties in different locations will fit the needs of a very diverse market. Demand is not uniform and the supply of properties from small studio flats in central areas or close to the University in Msida, as well as high standard apartments in top residential areas, well-kept and attractive villas, and even more homely family houses – are all in demand. In addition, as the reasons for people moving to Malta continue to diversify, so do their requirements and their choice of location. As the island’s reputation as a holiday destination and holiday island for the young (and not so young) continues to grow, it also guarantees that the more traditional short-let self-catering holiday property continues to be in demand, especially, but not exclusively, in the peak summer season. Over the last few years, the local demand for residential rental property has also increased, providing yet another opportunity for the rental of different types of property. And, from yet another angle, there is a growing demand for commercial property for rent. Such properties may cater for retail outlets and catering establishments – but perhaps the most requested are commercial properties, finished to high standards with the necessary amenities for them to be used as office space. This is an excellent moment for investment in rental property, but, as in all such capital ventures, one needs to be sure to go about it wisely. Information on market trends, on what

is in short supply and high demand will provide the confidence a buyer needs in order to enter this market. Knowledge of the best buy-to-let-loans available through the banks, is yet another piece of information that the buyer might need in order to comfortably enter this investment opportunity. Established property companies, such as Frank Salt Real Estate with local experience in sales and letting dating back to 1969, can provide the buyer of rental property with the inside knowledge of the market in Malta and all the information pertinent to making a careful and rewarding purchase. Frank Salt Real Estate has the largest and widest selection of residential and commercial properties on the market for sale and to let, and with their insight into the sale-forlet market and the assistance of one of the company’s highly trained and knowledgeable property consultants, you are well on the way to making an important investment purchase. The service you can expect from Frank Salt Real Estate doesn’t stop there however. Since the company, through its network of offices, provides letting services for long and short lets, residential and commercial properties, with branches in Sliema, St Julian’s, Marsascala and Gozo, which are fully dedicated to the rental market, you can be sure that you are dealing with people who are

experts in the field. And, once you’ve purchased your rental property and put it on the company’s books, they can continue to assist you in finding potential clients willing to rent your property. There are many questions and many issues which the potential buyer of a rental property must grapple with. The financial balance between expenditure and the property which renders the best returns on investment, is certainly upmost in people’s minds. Trends are changing. Areas such as central Malta, not traditionally associated with buy-for-let purchase are now in demand. Such properties tend to cost less to buy than property in the Sliema/St Julian’s area, but are increasingly in demand for those families who are renting for long periods and have no reason to be in the busy areas of Malta. Buyers may also wish to consider the potential returns on investing in one large property or in spreading out the investment, and possibly the risk, by purchasing smaller units perhaps in a single, multi-apartment property. Another way to decrease initial investment cost is to buy on plan in the new developments coming up in different parts of Malta and Gozo. The options are many, varied and vast. The potential for returns on buy-to-let property investment is high. With some guidance from people with experience on the changing landscape related to rental trends in Malta, some interesting returns on investment can be made. £

It’s Amazing What Floors Can Do

Wooden floors promise warmth, practicality and style. Inspired by that, R Living’s flooring specialist Stephen Mifsud takes us through the many new flooring designs that could transform your home.

Classical Oak Brown (R Living – Quick-Step) Warm browns are back again for interiors. This classical brown oak is the perfect floor for that warm and cosy feeling sought in an intimate space such as a bedroom.

Saw Cut Oak Grey (R Living – Quick-Step) A rough-cut finish that replicates the marks of a saw-blade on a wooden plank. This is a popular choice for interiors where a rustic, rural style is the desired look. The warm grey colour blends well, creating a homely feeling.

White Planks (R Living – Quick-Step) White remains an all-time favourite in interior design. This white floor has a brushed wood structure unique to R Living’s Quick-Step that radiates an unprecedented depth, enhanced by subtle matt lustre effects.

Natural Pine (R Living – Quick-Step) A floor that has the look and feel, as well as the unmistakable structure of brushed pine; an effect that’s visible right through the bevel. The light, natural colour of this floor works well with white and contrasts well with black details.

Concrete Wood (R Living – Quick-Step) If you’re looking for an industrial touch, the rough concrete look is just what you need. The visible wood print is also tangible in the surface, giving a deep structure that contains subtle matt and glossy effects to enhance depth and character.

Burned Planks (R Living – Quick-Step) Black is back. This black burned wood floor is a guaranteed eye-catcher and is just what you need for a trendy interior. It’s made its return in interior design.

Making A Statement

As one of Malta’s most prolific interior designers, Pippa Toledo has a great eye for detail; yet she still believes that the ultimate interior decoration secret is to give a room a focal point through a statement-making item. This, as she explains, can be done using fabrics, lighting, pattern, texture and ornaments.

Ethnically Brilliant (Pippa Toledo Studio) The ethnic style is all the rage at the moment, with rugs, cushions and fabrics all joining in the trend. Texture Is King (Pippa Toledo Studio) One of the biggest trends this season will be using texture to give the room more definition. What’s best is that a mixture of silk, raw linen, wood, distressed velvet and embossed wallpaper goes well in shabby chic homes, as well as in modern spaces.

Back In Business (Pippa Toledo Studio) Down-lighters have been the must-have lighting fixtures for many years now, but we can expect chandeliers to make a sweeping and definite revival in the seasons to come – and so long as it’s done tastefully, they will work in any home.

Ornamentally Grouped (Pippa Toledo Studio) Grouping ornaments of the same colour scheme together can give a side table or mantelpiece the pop of colour it needs and deserves.

Coloured Furniture (Pippa Toledo Studio) Classical pieces of furniture in a not-so-obvious colour, such as this yellow and blue bureau, can give a pop of colour to any room.

HOMES 73 STYLE

With Tender Love and Care

Interior stylist and Nine Yard’s design director, Luisa Diacono, is renowned for taking unloved pieces of furniture and transforming them into statement items for the home. Here she showcases some pieces that she has recently renovated, with accessories added from Loft.

Inject Personality (furniture by Nine Yards, cushions by Loft) Modern dining rooms can look like they’ve been copied and pasted from a catalogue – and that’s never a good look. To alter this, add a fun-coloured sideboard that won’t break the bank – you’ll both soften the look and bring personality to your room.

Pleasing Versatility (Nine Yards) This piece proves how versatile furniture of this sort can be – whether in the bedroom, bathroom or hallway. Wallpaper, meanwhile, always adds a touch of elegance.

Every Nook and Cranny (Nine Yards) When you’re transforming old furniture to fit your home, you really can find the right piece for every tiny space – as they provide a great-value option that means you won’t have to hold back. This wine rack, for instance, fits perfectly into this awkward window space.

See Things Differently (furniture by Nine Yards, cushions by Loft) Back in the 90s houses were full of pine furniture and these designs are still prevalent today, even though they don’t quite fit our modern aesthetic. Solve that by painting them a contemporary colour – this works beautifully in a stark, modern kitchen, for example.

The Downton Effect (furniture by Nine Yards, cushions by Loft) No space ever looks dull on period dramas like Downton Abbey, does it? And that’s because personality is injected into every space. As this picture shows, contemporary items can work so well with classic pieces, and the colour mix looks marvellous. Yes it’s good to know the rules, but it’s also important to know when to break them.

Soften It Up Cushions bring so much softness and texture to a space, and we really can’t stress enough how much they will transform the look of your home. This autumn invest in a few statement cushions, like these ones, and you won’t be disappointed.
