The Daddy Sleep Consultant is a baby-and-toddler sleep consultancy created by husband and wife, Chris and Dani McFadden. Based in Kent, but servicing clients all across the globe, their company's goal is simple: to provide families with the sleep they all deserve. They suffered from terrible sleep deprivation with their eldest child Teddy, and saw first-hand the life-changing work of a sleep consultant, which inspired them to retrain and set up the business. They specialise in gentle approaches to changing sleep patterns, following a holistic and baby-led approach.

Refurbishments are now underway at Moonfleet Manor as part of a multimillion-pound design project. Be one of the first guests to stay in the newly styled bedrooms within the classic Georgian manor house, with spectacular views of Chesil Beach. All Coach Houses are also being upgraded to include three luxurious bedrooms, plus the property will unveil an updated lounge and a brand-new, fully accessible room. Read our special interview with Jill Higgins, founder of the award-winning interior design company StudioJill behind the project on page 32. The works are the latest in a series of investments for the Luxury Family Hotels group, alongside the recent multimillion-pound development of Fowey Hall to include 24 new bedrooms and a new outdoor swimming pool. Our resident pooch, Peaches, loves welcoming four-legged friends to The Ickworth and giving a ‘Hi-5’ to children. She will only eat her food if it has freshly chopped ham in it, and she is chief squirrel chaser on the estate. Our resident rabbit, Bertha, loves the attention she receives from our guests at New Park Manor. She turns two years old this autumn and is a giant continental rabbit who is gorgeous to stroke. Top tip – her favourite treats are carrot tops and kale.

fitting when guests discover the historic hotel is thought to be the inspiration for The Wind in the Willows’ Toad Hall, after author Kenneth Grahame stayed at the property when first visiting Fowey in 1899. It's designed to provide a peaceful enclave where inquisitive minds can relax – vintage photographs adorn the library walls alongside playful monochromatic prints. Antique furniture and British-made pieces, including a console table made from a reclaimed railway sleeper by &Bespoke, provide cosy nooks and places to curl up with a favourite tome. Kids’ entertainment continues in Fowey Hall’s unique Games Room, which is kitted out with retro style arcade games, table tennis, a pool table, a cinema room, leather pommel horse seating and decorated with fun Marvel posters and prints. In the main dining room, art by local artist Stephanie Tudor entitled Tideline takes centre stage and is made from found objects from nearby Readymoney beach. The aim of the piece is to try and get children interested in and talking about what goes into our oceans and the ethos of

OLIDAY SOUVENIRS can vary; some collect postcards while others prefer sentimental knickknacks, but how about a 50-million-year-old piece of Earth's ancient history? With its beautiful gardens, seaside views and enviable position on the world-famous Jurassic Coast, Moonfleet Manor provides a wealth of opportunity for adventure in the great outdoors. The historic Georgian manor overlooks Chesil Beach, one of Dorset's most iconic landmarks. This dramatic, 18-mile-long shingle barrier beach has been the scene of many a shipwreck, and today it is famous for its fossils.

Moonfleet’s guests are free to explore as they please, but there are also several guided experiences on offer that can transform a wonderful holiday into a truly unforgettable one. With degrees in horticulture and ecology and a master’s degree in palaeontology, there is very little that Head Gardener Andrew Lawrence doesn’t know about the natural world, past or present, and he is passionate about sharing his knowledge. “At Moonfleet, we have history tours and talks, garden tours and fossil walks, which is very unique. Nowhere else offers that. I’ve always loved the natural world, and I love engaging with guests,” he enthuses.

As well as carefully tending to the hotel’s sweeping lawns, glasshouse, rose garden and more, Andrew is also responsible for creating and maintaining the beautiful and abundant kitchen gardens, which produce a plethora of fresh fruit and vegetables for the hotel’s talented chefs. Guests, greenfingered or otherwise, can join Andrew on a garden tour and discover all that he grows, while also getting a sneak peek at what might be on the menu that evening… “The children really love seeing all the different veg that we’ve got growing here – we’ve always done things like bok choi and pak choi, not just your standard lettuce. Last year our target was to grow 40,000 vegetables and we managed it,” he explains.  luxuryfamilyhotels.co.uk

“We don’t use any insecticides, we’re very organic, but we are also very productive. My 80 tomato plants will produce around 18,000 cherry tomatoes for the chefs this year, and they get around a thousand courgettes from us. This year we have a new head chef who wants us to grow more unusual and exotic things, which is great fun.” While Andrew may be a plant-growing guru, there is also another string to his bow. After finding his first fossil on the beach in Dorset at the age of 32, he has travelled the world hunting for more, taking him from Canada and the Antarctic to the sub-Sahara and beyond; he now holds a precious, personal collection of over 8,000 rare and unique finds. “I am often asked if I have a favourite fossil, but I love each and every one that I find. They

really give you a glimpse into a world long before we were around,” he explains. “The real magic for me comes when children pick a fossil up and I explain to them that they are the first life form to see that creature since it died over 60 million years ago – that’s one of the wonders that really keeps me going.” Today, Andrew is Moonfleet Manor’s resident expert in these fascinating fragments of history, and the hotel could not be in a better position for guests wanting to discover their own. The Jurassic Coast, which Moonfleet overlooks, is England’s only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for the outstanding universal value of its rocks, fossils and landforms. It is here that Andrew hosts his popular fossil walks, just behind Chesil Beach, along what

fossil, and... because we don’t have huge crowds visiting the Fleet, it means that I can take our guests out and guarantee that every one of them will find a fossil.” is known as the Fleet; a beautiful, calm lagoon just a short walk from the hotel. “I love how excited people get when they find their first fossil, and it’s not a difficult thing to do where we are. There are so many beautifully preserved fossils here,” Andrew explains. Each adventure starts with a visit to Andrew’s potting shed to discover some of his own ancient artefacts, before heading out on a gentle guided walk that covers approximately three miles of beautiful coastline. talks about the rich history and ecology of the local area while showing guests how to spot and identify a variety of fascinating fossils. On the Fleet, there’s no digging or chiselling required; fossils rise up through the sediment and can be easily found along the shoreline. Guests can expect to find the likes of brachiopods (types of sea mammal), goniorhynchia boueti (a type of oyster) and sea lily, also known as crinoid. “There are no cliffs where we are, so it’s completely safe, and the fossils are right there under your feet. Sea lilies look like a plant even though they’re not. They are lovely, beautiful creatures with long stems and a leafy head. We find lots of them,”

Andrew enthuses. “On the walks I also love recommending other nearby beaches. Some people get very carried away and end up spending their whole holiday looking for fossils! Different beaches have different types of fossils, and guests often bring their finds back to Moonfleet for me to identify.” Last year alone, Andrew and his team enthralled and inspired over 2,000 guests on Moonfleet’s fossil walks. Outings, which are complimentary for resident guests, tend to take place in the spring and summer months, whatever the weather. Tide times can result in some early starts, but the early bird catches the worm as they say,

or in this case the fossil. OING ON HOLIDAY with children is amazing. Seeing them experience new things and encouraging them to try activities they wouldn’t do at home is one of the joys of the holiday. However, as a dad of three myself, I know first-hand how different it is packing and travelling with kids! When you have kids, long gone are the days when you can throw together a suitcase the night before. Travelling with children comes with a whole host of new challenges. And one thing parents are likely to be concerned about is how their little ones will sleep in a new setting and routine. However, there are some small things you can do to make sure

their sleep (and subsequently yours) stays on track while you are away so you can enjoy your break to the maximum.

BEDTIME ROUTINE If you have a bedtime routine at home, you will know how important the routine is for being a signal to infants that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. If you can, try to keep their bedtime routine as close to their normal one at home. It can be simple things, such as the same bubble bath, a few familiar bath toys, reading a story. Even if they are going to bed later – which will likely happen on holiday – and in a new setting, the familiar steps will let them know that they are expected to sleep now.  luxuryfamilyhotels.co.uk

so try and keep as much from home as you can. If you have brought their sleeping bag, blankets or comforter be sure to use them. Anything that smells familiar can provide comfort in their new surroundings. The same goes with white noise; if your little one uses white noise at home, get it set up in the room. If you have forgotten your sound machine,

don’t fret! There are some great apps on your phone that will have something similar to replicate it.

NAPS ON THE GO When you are on holiday you want to be out and about exploring the local area or enjoying the benefits of the hotel. However, some babies and toddlers who normally have

all their naps in their cot at home can sometimes struggle to have a nap on the move. Apart from setting a couple of days aside to have their naps back in the hotel room, there are a few things you can do to help encourage them to grab a nap outside. Try to do any travelling around a scheduled nap time. If you are driving to an excursion, for example, try and time it so you can be in the car at the time of their usual nap. There aren’t many of us that can resist dropping off in the car if we are a little tired. Light and stimulation can be a big factor with naps. Never cover your baby’s pram with a muslin or towel as they can trap in more heat rather than keep it out,

however there are some pram covers on the market specifically designed to be air-permeable and protect against UV rays, which are great for reducing light and noise. If you are struggling with naps, try to get one of these ordered for next-day delivery to your hotel.

BE FLEXIBLE

If you haven’t managed to grab a nap at their usual time, that’s ok. Question: We need to travel between a few destinations, how long can my baby stay in their car seat? Should I plan for a much longer journey?

Question: What do we do if our toddler hasn’t napped all day? They usually have one nap in the afternoon from around lunchtime until late afternoon.

Question: If my children’s routine has gone completely out of the window on holiday, how do I get the routine back on track once we are at home again?

Answer: For safety reasons, it's a maximum of two hours in a car seat. I have done lots of long car journeys with my boys and I try to set off just as they are due a nap. They should doze off when you get into the car and then you can stop at services for a refresh and a snack/feed. You can even use that time to take them to a soft play or a play park – some services offer this – and wear them out before they go back into their car seat and have some rest in the next part of the journey. It might take a little longer to get to your destination but it’s a happier way to get there.

Answer: This is so common when on holiday. You have lots to do, and a nap just isn’t as much fun for your toddler! It’s ok to bring bedtime forward to reduce some of the overtiredness and the grumpiness which usually accompanies it. It doesn’t mean your little one will necessarily wake earlier; they often just consolidate their day and night sleep and wake up at their normal time in the morning nice and refreshed. If they aren’t so refreshed the next morning, you may want to reset and focus on getting the nap in that day as a priority – just build your fun around it.

Answer: That’s ok, it happens. It might be that you need to give your little one extra support when you get home to help them get back to sleeping as they were before holiday. But be firm and set how you want things to work again; they will have learned that boundaries can be broken whilst on holiday, but getting them back to their old routine as soon as you get home will let them know that your boundaries are back, and expectations of how and when they get to sleep are clear. It can take a few days to get the routine back in place, but do stick with it.

For the love of design Interior designer Jill Higgins chats about going behind-the-scenes at Fowey Hall and Moonfleet Manor during two impressively distinctive architectural projects Words | Jessica Way

HE REFURBISHMENT OF a 19th-century, Grade-II-listed Victorian coastal manor house, and 18th-century grand Georgian countryside mansion with families in mind – where did you begin? "We first asked ourselves: how do we create something comfortable but also luxurious and robust enough to stand the wear of a hotel environment, coastal locations, muddy boots, children, dogs and more. Our approach to designing the ‘family friendly’ spaces at Luxury Family Hotels evoked a few key principles. Firstly, family friendly does not mean we are designing for children. We are designing for

adults who would like somewhere stylish but want to feel relaxed and confident that their children are welcome - and that it doesn’t matter if they throw baked beans on the floor. Secondly, I would say that children are more sophisticated and design aware than ever before. They enjoy grown-up experiences – and love the ‘mini me’ idea. It is the idea of that inner sense of fun and nostalgia rooted in our childhood which we have aimed to tap into with the brand positioning and design for Luxury Family Hotels. This in turn encourages interaction between different generations, building upon the brand positioning of 

Finally, with everything which has happened over the last two years we believe designing spaces in which multi-generations can enjoy time spent together is more relevant than ever." What would you say have been the biggest differences and challenges in the renovations? "Architecture. Working out how you modernise the hotels and bring them up to date without

losing the charm and character. Fowey’s main house is highly decorative and retains a lot of its original Victorian character. It was built in the 1890's by Charles Augustin Hanson, who was born in Polruan, across the estuary from Fowey, when he came back after making his fortunes abroad. This was in the late-nineteenth century, during the romantic, picturesque era of architecture. The land was bought from the Rashleigh family who own Daphne du

Maurier’s estate. There is plenty of decorative and grand architectural detail. This required a delicate hand and slightly more decorative touch to the way we treated the interiors. Location also made it interesting – Fowey Hall is located at the highest point in the town of Fowey and is very much part of the community and townscape, but without acres of land to expand into. Therefore, growing the guest experience, whilst keeping mindful of the space for guests to feel a sense of peace and calm, is continually challenging. Moonfleet is Georgian rather than Victorian and although externally it still has a sense of grandeur, internally a lot of the original interior has been removed over the years and quirky architectural details from a variety of countries and periods can now be found. We felt it was important to breathe a bit of the Georgian grandeur back into the building and reference the hotel's rich and varied history and local maritime heritage. Our approach is much bolder and slightly less refined to reflect the scale, proportion of the building and setting of the hotel in its beautiful but isolated beach location. We wanted to celebrate the beauty and honesty of the location and how it has evolved in a playful yet artful way."

Have you been able to add a likeness within your design at the different hotels? "Yes, but while there is brand consistency and an overall identity creating a familiarity for guests there are also broad arching ideas allowing each of the hotels to have their own distinct personality and stand in their own right. This continues to be really important to us as

we are not trying to create a faceless chain. Each of the hotels has its own story, quirks and eccentricities – something we would like to celebrate. the hotel with its building; country charm; mixing old with new; monochromatic patterns and playful colour; and creating a sense of discovery through delight and surprise. The hidden details are also so important, things which might not be immediately obvious to guests but which they discover unexpectedly, and it makes them smile, for example the wallpaper lining to the bedroom drawers and wardrobes, the crab doorstops, and the bronze Wind in the Willows figures hiding behind other ornaments in the lounge." Which is your favourite room and why at each of the hotels? Fowey, I would have to say the Library – it feels like somewhere you would want to curl up. We took a sympathetic approach to the architecture, keeping the original fireplace, mouldings and shelving, and combined this with new contemporary crafted pieces, bold monochromatic prints and British-made fabrics. 36

I also love the Morning Room Bar – it works from day to evening, beautiful views for coffee in the morning, space to work and contemplate (you often see parents with a laptop getting a few sneaky emails in here), and by evening it becomes a space for parents to be transported to a grown-up cocktail bar. And, the new spa bedrooms: contemporary luxury, in line with current trend for simple, well-designed spaces, and with stunning views. Moonfleet Manor, I just love the Mansion House bathrooms – playful overscaled wallpaper,

chandeliers and traditional rolltop baths and large showers, with a mix of Georgian and contemporary furniture. What did you enjoy most about these projects? Getting to know each hotel, its quirks, stories and breathing life into them again. It is also wonderful to be able to work on projects like this where there is a great team to bounce off, both in terms of at Luxury Family Hotels and the local makers, designers, artists and craftspeople who have all contributed to making it possible. ⬥

Tips From our friends Sharky & George 1. Where Make sure you have enough space for the number of children you're inviting, in our books the more room the better, ideally out in a park whatever the weather! Finding a venue can be exhausting so do this as early as possible. 2. What to do for an outdoor party when it rains (so rare these days!) Our recommendation would be to make sure all the children get togged up in warm clothes and waterproofs and crack on. All children love splashing around in the rain. You just have to make sure the entertainers don't mind either! 3. Theme We recently did a dinosaur, fairy, power ranger party (with cakes to match!) which was epic. You just have to go with whatever your child is into and bear in mind that it will most likely change before the party. 4. Food Whilst it is great to make sure all the food is healthy and full of goodness, a little bit of naughtiness should be allowed at a birthday party! 5. Party bags We would recommend one thing that is a present worth keeping, rather than something that might end up in the bin after the party. Then you can put a few things in to play with there and then at the end of the party and a few sweets are always popular!

6. Cake Go on, give it a go yourself! A homemade cake always looks and tastes better and your friends will be seriously impressed, even if it looks like a frisbee. 7. More Balloons It takes about 4500 average sized helium balloons for a child to fly off into the sky 9. The Party We feel that the key is for all of the children to be involved all of the time, whatever their age. So wherever possible avoid everyone sitting down watching a performance in favour of an active and interactive experience that everyone is part of. Founder of Bramley’s Little B range, Chloë Luxton talks to us about creating a naturally inspired, eco-conscious range for children… Words | Emma Johnson

HEN CHLOË was a little girl, her days were spent catching slowworms or newts, building rafts and making ‘flower perfumes’, which she created by mixing rose petals with her mother’s favourite scents. She then found herself a comfortable spot on the garden wall and sold her perfumes to passing walkers. “It was when I was at my happiest and, looking back, I realise how lucky I was and how simple life was then,”

Brought up on the coast in Cornwall, Chloë described her whole childhood as being “immersed in nature”, and it is clear this love of the beautiful, natural world continued throughout her life and into her role as founder of Bramley, whose products are a hymn to the restorative power of nature. “I wanted to bottle that feeling you get when you’ve had the most amazing weekend away, soothed by the quiet beauty of the countryside.”

and being as eco-minded as possible, Chloë wasn’t prepared to compromise when it came to products. And so, Bramley was born. “Right from the beginning we set out to change the crazy overuse of plastics. We were one of the first brands to pioneer refillables in hotel bedrooms, and now all of our packaging is recycled, recyclable or reusable; and we have a strict sustainability policy in-house to ensure that we are always thinking about the planet and ways in which we can reduce waste.” Even the brand’s marketing materials are printed using natural ink and products are wrapped in ‘mindful tissue paper’, which can be coloured in by children or adults alike. The provenance of Bramley’s ingredients is also paramount. The brand not only uses natural

bases – derived from crops like coconut or sugar – and pure essential oils, for their therapeutic effects, but also because they have the most beautiful fragrances. All its ingredients are biodegradable and are safe to be washed into rivers and oceans, and it does not use any sulphates, silicones, parabens, PEGS or artificial colours or scents. “This means that we know we are only selling the best products and we haven’t compromised on anything,” explains Chloë. With children of her own, and the brand evolving, Chloë naturally turned her inspiration to create products for babies and little ones, ensuring they were delicate enough for their young skin. “Children’s skin is very sensitive, as it is not fully developed, so it is really important to be aware of what

SALMON & DILL BALLS This is a tasty way to pack in those all-important omega 3s, and did you know that babies should have two portions of oily fish like salmon in their diet every week from six months? It’s essential for their brain and visual development. In fact, some research shows that eating salmon can make you smarter. INGREDIENTS

Makes 18 Balls � 200g/7 oz sweet potato, pricked with a fork � 3 spring onions, chopped � 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill � 200g/7 oz skinless salmon fillet, diced � 25g/1 oz grated Parmesan cheese � 1 egg yolk METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. 2. Cook the sweet potato in a microwave for about 8 minutes until soft. Leave to cool, then scoop out the flesh. 3. Put the spring onions, dill, salmon, Parmesan, egg yolk and cold sweet potato into a food processor. Whizz until blended. Shape into 18 small balls. 4. Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with non-stick baking paper. Bake for 12 minutes, turning over halfway through cooking, until pale golden and cooked through.

Makes 10–12 stars � 200g carrots, peeled and grated � 50g Cheddar, grated � 25g Parmesan, grated � 2 eggs, beaten � 4 tbsp self-raising flour METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. 2. Put the carrots into a clean towel, squeeze out as much liquid as possible. 3. Place in a bowl. Add the cheeses, eggs, flour and seasoning (for babies aged over one). 4. Line a baking sheet with nonstick baking paper. Put a star cutter onto the sheet. Fill the cutter with the carrot mixture. Press down firmly. Remove the cutter and repeat. You could also use a small round cutter instead of a star. 5. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until lightly golden and set. 48

OWL PORRIDGE Have a hoot making this wise little owl. A warm bowl of porridge is the perfect way to start the day and it will keep you feeling full all morning. This simple recipe comes with a 'twit-two' just for you. INGREDIENTS

Makes 1 owl porridge � 45g porridge oats � 275ml milk of choice � 1 small banana, mashed � ½ tsp vanilla extract � 2 tsp unsweetened desiccated coconut (optional) TO DECORATE

� 4 strawberries, sliced � ½ banana, sliced � 2 blueberries � ½ mango, sliced

breakfast METHOD

1. Measure the oats and milk into a saucepan. Place over a medium heat and bring to the boil, stirring all the time. 2. Add the banana, vanilla extract and coconut, if using, and continue to stir until the porridge has thickened and the oats are soft. This should take about 5 minutes. 3. Spoon into a bowl and use the fruit to decorate the top.

HIDDEN VEG SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE After a busy day, this is the perfect way to recharge your batteries. Plus, it's packed with lots of good-for-you veggies. Get. Set. Go! INGREDIENTS

Makes 6 portions � 1 tbsp olive oil � 1 small onion, peeled and finely chopped � 1 small leek, trimmed and thinly sliced � ½ stick celery, diced � ½ small red pepper, deseeded and diced � 1 small carrot, peeled and grated � 50g mushrooms, diced � ½ apple, peeled, cored and grated � 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed � 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes � 450g minced beef � 4 tbsp tomato purée � 2 tbsp ketchup � 250ml beef stock � ½ tsp dried oregano � 8 oz/228g of spaghetti � 1 tbsp grated Parmesan � Small handful of fresh basil leaves METHOD

1. Place the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the vegetables and apple and fry for 10 minutes until soft. Stir in the garlic and fry for 10 seconds. 2. Transfer to a blender, add the chopped tomatoes and whizz until smooth. Set aside. 3. Add the mince to the frying pan and place over a medium-high heat. Fry for 4 minutes, breaking the mince up with a wooden spoon, until browned (you may need to do this in batches). 4. Place the vegetable sauce in the pan with the mince, then add the tomato purée, ketchup, stock and oregano. Bring to a simmer and cook for 40–45 minutes, until the sauce is thick. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 5. Serve with spaghetti and a sprinkling of Parmesan and fresh basil leaves. 50

ANIMAL CUPCAKES

METHOD

These fun bakes are perfect for party animals! Once your cakes are baked and cooled, why not create pups, pandas and cheeky monkeys? Or you can decorate them with your own favourite animals.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/350°F/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. 2. Measure all the cake ingredients into a large bowl and beat together using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. 3. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases and bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden. 4. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool. 5. Meanwhile, to make the icing, place the butter, milk and icing sugar in a large bowl. Beat together using an electric whisk until fluffy and pale. 6. Once the cupcakes are cool, spread or pipe the icing on top and serve.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 12 cupcakes For the cakes � 2 large eggs � 100g soft butter � 100g caster sugar � 150g self-raising flour � 1 tsp baking powder � 2 tbsp milk � 1 tsp vanilla extract For the icing � 200g soft butter � 1 tbsp milk � 300g icing sugar

TO DECORATE Puppy Dogs - Add 25g cocoa powder to the icing and pipe it onto the cakes. Cut ear shapes out of brown fondant and add edible eyes, a jellybean nose and a piece of pink lace for a tongue. Pandas - Dip the iced cupcakes in desiccated coconut (you will need about 75g for all 12 cakes). Cut noses, mouths and oval shapes from black fondant and place edible eyes on top. Add mini-Oreos for ears. Monkeys -Turn the icing brown with 25g cocoa powder and ice the cakes, then dip them in chocolate sprinkles. Use half a mini–Jaffa Cake for each ear, and a whole one for the face, drawing on nostrils and a mouth with black fondant. Lastly, add edible eyes.

Stretching 630 miles around the South West Coast, this National Trail allows you to take in breathtaking views, historic land and mystical ruins.

Staying on a Sunday? You’ll find a three-course feast of seasonal lunch options to choose from, including home-grown veg and local meat, with an hour of complimentary childcare in our Four Bears Den (just let us know in advance). Plus, we serve a delicious afternoon tea daily (from 2.30pm to 4.30pm), which includes homemade scones, finger sandwiches and sweet treats.

Discover the Nature Garden If your children ever tire of the (seasonal) heated outdoor swimming pool, close by is our Nature Garden where they can hunt for bugs, count butterflies or sit quietly in the nature hide and watch the birds and the bees. Little New Park Rangers Did you know about our woodland courses? We've teamed up with New Park Farm to offer a series of adventure courses for children, held in the beautiful woodland a short drive from the hotel. Through interactive play, children learn about the diversity of the New Forest National Park and the importance of protecting it.

Here they’ll find a Wind in the Willows-themed play area, complete with a zip line, bucket swing, slide and ‘springer’ lily pads. How to Draw a Giant Squid Rob has entertained thousands of families with his draw-along videos, now you can learn how to draw this giant squid in eight easy step-by-step instructions

Let’s start with something easy. Draw a wobbly line two-thirds of the way down the page. It should have two upward bumps in the middle and be turned up at each end.

Let’s give your squid some arms. Draw five long sausage shapes as shown, joined up above and below the eyes. (A squid has eight arms in real life, but ours has fewer so that we can see them all properly.)

Time for the two tentacles. Draw a very long, very thin sausage shape with a rounded diamond on the end, coming up and out of each side, as shown. Add lots of little bumps to the five short arms in the middle.

Let’s finish up by adding some detail! This giant squid has lots of little dots to add some texture and we’ve made it a rich red colour, but yours can be whatever colour you want.

Europe’s biggest air show is back with dynamic aerobatic manoeuvres over Bournemouth this September. Over 1,000 plastic ducks are launched into the river from the Town Bridge at noon, while Bradford-on-Avon Rowing Club kayakers wait at the finish line to retrieve the lucky winners of the many amazing prizes. There is a star prize for speediest duck, usually a family holiday, as well as many more exciting runners-up prizes to be won. The kayakers also retrieve all of the remaining ducks which are reused each year.

Our very own country festival offers families the chance to enjoy the English summer at its best in Woolley’s 14-acre gardens. There’s family yoga, festival faces, fresh pesto making in the gardens with our hotel’s chefs, soft archery, willow weaving, flower crown making, mocktail creation, Little Green Finger’s gardening, and tie dying. There’s also the Family Challenge for those feeling a little bit competitive!

Europe’s largest children’s literature festival brings a host of writers and illustrators to the city for live, interactive events. Expect a star-studded, diverse line-up of speakers, draw-alongs and workshops on comics and creative writing. One of the country’s best-loved regattas is on the doorstep for Fowey Hall guests. Take a stroll down to the harbour to enjoy a full programme of sailing races between the boats and dinghy fleet. On land there are a number of traditional events, including the carnival procession, fireworks displays, a crab-catching competition, Fowey harbour swim, the Giant Pasty ceremony and pasty-eating competition, floral dance and, of course, Fowey Town Band.

The Eden Sessions are a series of live music festivals held in the summer in the spectacular setting of the Eden Project. The site, with its natural acoustics, draws worldclass artists. In 2022 the line-up includes My Chemical Romance (16–17 May), Lionel Richie (14 June), Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (15 June), Diana Ross (21 June) and Bryan Adams (29 June). Ticket options can include Prosecco upon arrival, canapés and light bites pre-show.

Fowey Festival is a celebration of all things arts and literature, inspired by the famed author Daphne du Maurier, who spent a large part of her life in and around Fowey. Daphne took inspiration from her surroundings and created a rich literary legacy of titles set in the Cornish landscape. The Festival events showcase the inspiration behind the author’s stories, with book readings and debates.

Favourite place at the hotel?

Out on the floor in reception to welcome dogs, children and their grown-ups as they arrive and then to check in on them throughout their stay. Once I’ve met a guest, it’s lovely to be able to see them again and again during their time with us.

How do you go the extra mile for guests?

I try to keep my ears available for everyone. Listening to guests and staff is invaluable to my role. Peaches is a great listener too.

First thing you do when you arrive at work?

After giving Peaches (the hotel tail wagger) her early morning walk around the estate, I head to the kitchen to catch up with the breakfast team and grab my first coffee of the morning – if I’m lucky there’s a flat white ready and waiting. I then take a walk around the hotel to catch up with all the teams.

What essential item could you not work without?

Mobile phone and my laptop, both are essential for communication with my team and guests. My walking boots and a hair band are also essential for nipping out with Peaches.
