Scientists have connected a human brain to the Internet for the first time

Red Lion Controls have announced the CR1000 and CR3000 as their newest generation of Human Machine Interfaces. Both employ new Crimson® 3.1 software for more engaging interfaces with advanced design capabilities in addition to protocol conversion, data logging and web server for remote monitoring and control. Available in sizes from 4’3” up to 15” they feature a wide array of connectivity options thanks to the built-in and ever-expanding library of more than 300 industrial protocols available.

Ultra compact PLC by Panasonic Panasonic have released the all new FP0H ultra compact PLC. It offers some exciting features such as improved speed, capacity and more connectivity options including built-in dual Ethernet ports that natively support Ethernet IP and Modbus TCP/IP. Thanks to its built-in data logger, users can easily record continuous data as well as events and alarms to the SD card. It represents the perfect blend of functionality, quality and price.

A team of researchers from the Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa has achieved a groundbreaking feat in the field of biomedical engineering by linking the human brain to the Internet. Medical Express recently featured a release stating that the scientists have connected the human brain to the Internet in real time for the first time. Tagged as the “Brointernet,” the project is aimed at turning our brain “into an Internet of Things (IoT) node on the World Wide Web.” The device gathers brainwave EEG signals using an Emotiv EEG device that is connected to the user’s head. The brain signals are communicated to a Raspberry Pi computer that streams this data to an application programming interface. This data is then displayed on an open website for anyone to view. Once the technology develops into a usable application, it will offer endless opportunities in the field of machine learning and brain-computer interfaces. The project would also offer us a better understanding of our brains.

Endlessly reusable notebook The Everlast notebook claims to be endlessly reusable whilst providing a classic pen and paper experience. Using any pen from the Pilot Frixion line, you’ll be able to erase by simply adding a drop of water. The 36 pages (or 32 on the large format) are a ‘waterproof synthetic poly blend’ and allows pages to be erased over and over again with a wet towel. When you’ve written on the Everlast, you can then capture images of the pages quickly with the Rocketbook app and then send it to Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive, or to an email address. The Rocketbook Everlast is available for $55.

As we all know, carrying a tool box 24/7 is quite cumbersome, so here comes “The Claw”. The Claw is crafted from a solid chunk of 440c stainless steel, and is a multi-tool that is able to pack 18 different tools in one solid device. Many cool features include the hex ratchet section that allows operation of the tool like a ratchet, without the conventional ratchet wrench mechanism. Stepped faces on the hex ratchet allow you to use the same tool for nearly every size. As the tool is entirely made of solid steel, there is no such problem of wearing out of the joints!

Electricity produced from tears In the years to come, we may have no fossil fuels to power our industries and automobiles. A team of Irish scientists from the Bernal Institute of Limerick discovered a way to produce electricity from tears. The team managed to generate electric current by applying pressure to the lysozyme protein that is found in both tears and egg whites. Some materials like quartz can convert mechanical energy to electrical energy under applied pressure, and the phenomenon is known as piezoelectricity. The piezoelectric materials are not usually used for producing

Wearable airconditioner for every type of weather The world’s first personal A/C watch called Aircon Watch claims it can regulate the temperature of your entire body irrespective of the surrounding climate. Using “ClimaCon” technology when the wearer begins to feel warm, they can set their watch to send pulses while informing the body that it needs to cool down. The battery of the Aircon Watch allows a cooling time of four hours and a heating time of about eight hours. The friendly interface has three buttons to let you regulate the temperature and the straps can be interchanged to suit.

This mouthpiece claims to clean polluted air and infuse it with minerals Treepex is a portable barrel-like device that allegedly uses living tree cells compressed in replaceable cartridges to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, emulating a tree’s ability to transform polluted air into mineralenriched air. Developed by a Georgian, Tbilisi-based, startup with the same name, Treepex claims to provide a real solution to the world’s growing air pollution problem. Using a new technology called CRISPR, the company was apparently able “to extract the DNA of actual trees to recreate the living cells that are responsible for photosynthesis”. All you have to do is plug a cartridge into the tubular Treepex, stick it into your mouth, and breathe. The bizarre-looking mouthpiece has an LED indicator that indicates when it’s time to change the cartridge, and a wireless fast charger that takes 30 minutes.

part from the fact that expanding economies are unrelentingly concentrating on improving the productivity and efficiency of machines, there is an increasing need for the mining and tracking of the production data contained in those machines and using it for an efficient business that is more profitable. The way supervisors, operators and business owners use their equipment to interface is changing as quickly as the devices themselves. With the growing number of industrial machinery, it is becoming increasingly necessary to find a way to carry out machine interaction in a more informative and intuitive manner and there are many new innovations to make this a reality. The equation comprises of operators and machine owners and although both parties want their equipment to be operated efficiently, they have different ways of going about it. The HMI can be a visual tool and gateway that can satisfy both parties by transferring essential information and presenting it to build profiles for the machine and assist the operator when making important decisions that directly affect productivity. Continuous improvement initiatives are employed to increase profitability by increasing quality, productivity and uptime. However, you may be surprised at the amount of money that’s saved, or profit generated, from seemingly minute increases in efficiency.

What’s a percent worth? Companies consistently look for ways to increase profitability, even if it’s by as little as one or two percent. Most that are serious about continuous improvement employ “industrial engineers”, aka “manufacturing engineers”, who are responsible for finding ways to improve processes by single-digit percentages.

Such small improvements may seem trivial, but consider a production line that produces $10M worth of product in a typical year. If the productivity of the line was increased just 1%, the company would gain an additional $100K worth of revenue. Seems fairly straightforward, right? However, what we mustn’t forget is that the profit generated by the additional $100K in revenue can be considerably higher, as only incremental costs will apply to the increased production. That’s because the fixed costs, such as the cost of the machine, rent or taxes for the building, the worker’s salaries, and more are not taken into consideration when calculating incremental cost.

The value of information One of the most impressive functions of the modern HMI is their built-in data logging feature. Any piece of data from any connected device can be stored locally, along with a time and date stamp, for later review. This allows data to be collected as a means to improving performance at a manufacturing facility, or to provide a historical analysis of remotely located processes. Some users, even use the logging facility as a means to determine the sequence of events that caused a machine failure. The data logger normally stores information in simple CSV (comma separated variables) file format. This format is ideal, as it is easily read by personnel, and can be automatically imported into virtually every type of database. As an added bonus they can also feature automatic synchronization tools, allowing the CSV files to be periodically sent to any FTP server for long term storage. The unit’s SQL Sync service provides seamless synchronization with Microsoft’s SQL Server. Even if the site doesn’t have an MES – manufacturing execution system, they may appreciate knowing that their HMI has the ability to integrate with one as their business grows and their IT needs evolve.

When things go pear-shaped When things go wrong (as they always do), instead of maintenance staff waiting for a phone call to alert them of a machine-down condition, the HMI can be programmed to send an email, or even a text message directly to them. If an Ethernet connection is unavailable (or their IT manager is too paranoid to provide an Ethernet connection to the outside) the HMI can even have in-built cellular connectivity!

Remote access In many circumstances, your users will want to keep an eye on their processes from within their office, and some may not have the room for an extra monitor or TV. Others will want the ability to view production information remotely, whether from home, on the road, or from their favourite golf course. Some HMIs have built in webservers that provide the ability to remotely view its display from any web-enabled device, even a phone. If the size or resolution of the device doesn’t allow

convenient viewing of the HMI pages, simplified “data-only” pages can be created. For the ultimate in customisation, the user can create HTML web pages to tailor make the solution. However, all these amazing features will amount to nothing, if you’re unable to establish a communication with end-devices. This is the reason why many HMI manufactures are committed to providing widespread third-party device support. With this, the HMI can serve as gateway, display as well as data concentrator.

Communication and connectivity Almost every manufacturing plant struggles with connectivity issues. Whether it’s the PLC, the servo, the barcode scanner or the sensor with a serial output, something will communicate with a protocol that differs from the rest of the components in the system. Certain HMI panels like Red Lion Controls offers the extra flexibility with its in-built protocol conversion. With just a few clicks, a user can use their Allen Bradley PLC to communicate with their older Omron PLC, variable speed drives, as well as SCADA software. All these can be achieved without understanding the protocols used. This makes it possible for companies to pick the best-in-class devices for all the tasks instead of adapting a “one size for all” tactic. The human machine interface (HMI) system has evolved from push-button controls to the primary platform for operational decision-making. Just as today’s best video games offer up dramatic new capabilities, today the HMI provides more impactful graphics, contextualised alerts and intuitively placed information that enables operators to make quick, in-process decisions. The modern HMI is designed to serve as a nexus for automation systems, thereby making it possible for a control system’s automation components to be integrated seamlessly. In addition, it can serve as a strong platform for data storage and manipulation, enabling users to enjoy benefits that are only available in pricey SCADA packages. If you add it to the in-built web server technology, it’ll also become a remote diagnostics, monitoring and troubleshooting tool. HMIs are remarkably potent as communication platforms. The devices available today can work on multiple-vendor machines as well as existing equipment that are network-enabled. There are devices that make it possible for users to control and select drives, motion controllers, PLCs or PID controllers straight from the platform. As outlined, some additional features such as the built-in web server permits remote personal access to control equipment and monitor from practically all networked devices. HMIs can use text messages or emails to alert personnel as to pending or exiting issues in order to make sure problems are resolved fast, thereby minimising downtime.

There are some other factors to think about like control options, program scalability and pricing. Control option is the ability of HMIs to serve as a controller or PLC. If used correctly, this capability could lessen a system’s complexity. Also, if a vendor can offer a “scalable solution,” then it becomes easier to alter the program created for one HMI for a lower-end or higher-end HMI from the product line of the company. This way, a programmer can maximise time by reusing older works and adding or removing features as desired. Notice that price comes last… a lot of other considerations have to come first to arrive at an appropriate decision. Pick functionality, and then compare the prices. Choosing a subpar HMI only for its price will eventually lead to more costs in the future.

First impressions Unboxing the system, we were immediately impressed with the appearance and build quality of the ACQ580. Complete with fancy front cover and unique water drop emblem, the overall sense of quality is high. It’s housed in a very compact body which means less space is required for mounting or cabinet fitting. On paper, its specifications boasts an impressive power range from 0.75 to 250kW, with an optional IP55 enclosure allowing for wall installation. With water specific firmware the ACQ580 includes functionalities such as sensor-less flow calculation, multi-pump control, level control, soft pipe fill, dry run protection and even quick ramps with a solution to keep the impeller of the pump clean. A PLC or RTU can still be used with the ACQ580, however it’s not mandatory, even for more complex applications.

CLN | ISSUE 10 | FEB-MAY ‘18 The ACQ580 we found very easy to set up and is complimented by its intuitive ‘Hand-OffAuto’ control panel and PC tool composer – more on that later. Looking at its functions, they are thankfully logically grouped in the primary settings menu and its descriptions make it obvious to the user as to which group to look in. A context sensitive help menu in parameter descriptions basically makes referencing the manual a nonevent. Basic programming software is offered free with this device, which we accessed through its mini-USB port using a standard off-the-shelf cable. The ACQ580 features a TUV certified category 4 rated safe torque off function. What this means is that contactors are not required when trying to meet a particular safety category. This is a real cost saver, not only in terms of the contactors but also in terms of space and installation time.

For example if a pump impeller on a waste water treatment plant was starting to get bound up with rags, the VSD would be able to detect the higher current being drawn from the pump, activating its cleaning sequence to free it up before operator intervention would be required. .

I chat with outdoor lover and industrial automation expert Chris Freebody about advancing technology and the challenges that follow. You’ve worked in the industry for a number of years, do you find based on rapid technology advancements, your clients are needing to upgrade more often? Industry today needs long term sustainable solutions to answer questions about how to manage existing infrastructure and develop new business. We are lucky to be living in a time where we have the technology and expertise to achieve this. A key question we ask at Control Logic is how we can make this work for our customers. The answer, we believe is efficiency. Efficiency definitely seems to be a main focus for many products. Are we moving too fast as an industry here, or not fast enough? For many in the industry, rapid progress in artificial intelligence, robotics and automation is a growing anxiety. For example, what if it causes a situation of divide amongst those in the industry? My belief is that quite the opposite is possible. That advancing technologies will enable both big and small companies to thrive. Nice point - does this pose challenges in your role? What do you find difficult? I meet with many customers with many different goals across a broad range of industries. While it can be demanding, I find it’s also one of the most exciting parts of my role. Learning about their business, their industry and then translating this into solutions for them is deeply satisfying. So what’s a satisfying day out of work? Bike riding with the kids, or out in the surf. Turn a day into a month? The beach! Random question - Food and drink of choice? Thai, and Long Island Iced Tea! Complete this sentence... irtual reality isn’t a new concept, in fact it has roots tracing back to 1838. The first virtual reality device was actually created by Charles Wheatstone, an English scientist and inventor. At the time, Wheatstone wasn’t attempting to create a new form of media, but to show those around him that “the brain processes the different two-dimensional images from each eye into a single object of three dimensions.” His work further proved that “viewing two side by side stereoscopic images or photos through a stereoscope gave a user a sense of depth and immersion.”

VR is swiftly making its way into the mainstream, and while it is most commonly referred to as, ‘the next big thing’ in gaming, it’s also revolutionising the way specific industries work. The engineering industry has already embraced the benefits of VR, as it continues to develop solutions, allowing its businesses to run more proactive and cost-effective training programs.

VR in training Utilising VR as a training tool allows companies to create a more immersive programme, offering greater interaction than any mouse and keyboard could ever give. Engineers can utilise technology such as Oculus Rift to place themselves in various scenarios relevant to their job.

Training in VR also creates a more costeffective training process. When mistakes are made in the engineering industry, it can result in damage to expensive equipment, or worse. However, training on a virtual example of the apparatus negates the risk of damage and prepares engineers for the best ways in which to tackle the many problems that could arise. Alongside this, engineers can be exposed to realistic hazardous situations without actually being in any real danger. For example, trainees could be taught about day-to-day workplace safety regulations, or something more extreme, such as how to handle a fire aboard an oil rig. As this virtual style of training develops, it could help create a more safety-conscious and fully-prepared workforce.

It’s all in the software There are already companies dedicated to creating a more efficient training routine via VR experiences. Serious VR are developing specific software with the purpose of keeping failure and associated costs to a minimum. The company’s approach has included gamification to engage workers: “By using gamification elements, production workers in any age category will be highly motivated to redo training and improve their output and scores. This will result in better trained personnel and operational excellence.”

VR isn’t just helping train engineers; it’s also being used as part of recruitment initiatives. BT’s Openreach announced that they would be creating a VR experience, allowing those interested in their trainee scheme to discover some of the typical jobs involved in the daily life of a field engineer. This experience features a climb up a telephone pole and a tour of a local exchange building, given from the perspective of a real engineer using 360º video.

The high temperatures are often the cause of overheating of electrical components located inside the enclosures reducing their lifespan, while also contributing to downtime and repairs.

Electronics are typically most efficient in an environment where the humidity is low and the temperature is approximately 35°C. As the temperature in an enclosure rises it can have a lasting effect on the electronics. Tests have shown that an increase in temperature of as little as 10°C shortens the life expectancy of electrical components by more than 50%. Enclosure climate control prevents critical temperature fluctuations, avoids overheating and protects against the formation of condensate. It is essentially the backbone of your entire production process, prolonging the life of your electronics and protecting your investment. To choose the best Thermal Management Solution you first need to understand your environment. Indeed, the environment in the electrical enclosure can be affected by weather conditions, solar radiation or other external temperature sources. As an example

an Air to Water Heat Exchanger will be adapted to an enclosure placed in a factory that faces hot weather spikes or an extremely dirty or caustic environment compared to traditional industrial air conditioners. nfrared cameras are hot property in the PULS development department and are constantly in use. But why is it worth making all the effort of performing a thermographic analysis? It all starts with the unique ‘cool design’ of PULS devices. The three principles of ‘cool design’ The term ‘cool’ is appropriate here on two levels. Obviously, PULS aims to impress with devices that feature a premium housing and look stylish. But the primary meaning of the word ‘cool’ here is in the physical sense, i.e. in relation to temperature. Convection cooling involves a flow of warm air being transferred outside. The effect of a functioning air-flow can be recorded by thermography. The thermographic image of a PULS CP10 clearly shows that sensitive components, such as electrolytic capacitors (see image key 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), have been positioned perfectly for ventilation, allowing them to be kept cool.

If the temperature within a power supply increases by 10°C, the service life of the electrolytic capacitors will be halved – and that’s without even factoring in its current load. This manifests itself in a considerable reduction in capacitance. Although this loss won’t necessarily lead to the immediate failure of the power supply, it will have a seriously detrimental effect on the lifespan of the device as a whole. It is for this reason that the developers at PULS give very careful consideration to the optimum positioning of the electrolytic capacitors and other temperature-sensitive components, such as varistors and optocouplers. On the basis of resonant designs, they place the components that have an effect on the service life as far away as possible from the ‘hot’ components, such as the transformer. There are noticeably fewer temperature-sensitive electrolytic capacitors in PULS power supplies than in competitors products. The dimensions of the electrolytic capacitors are also noteworthy – whilst these sensitive components are becoming smaller in competitors’ products, they consequently have a shorter life span. rom the beginning of industrial robotic history, robots have been designed to be strong and powerful to do heavy tasks and it wasn’t a good idea to be in the path of this huge and moving piece of steel. A new generation of robots are now designed to work alongside humans without fencing, they are called collaborative robots. What is a collaborative robot? It is a robot that is designed to work in direct cooperation with a human within a defined workspace under a specific condition. So what allows the robot manufacturer to introduce robots without this protection? The AS4024.3301 standard and ISO/TS 15066 technical specification define four different types of collaborative applications:

1. Power & force limiting Robot force is limited through electrical or mechanical means; 2. Safety monitored stop Robot stops when the user enters area and continues when they exit;

The robot used for each one of these applications has to comply with specific requirements according to the standard. Regardless of the type of application used, a risk assessment must be performed to eliminate or reduce the risk to as low as reasonably practicable. This will ascertain the performance level required for the safety related parts of the robotic system.

3. Speed & position monitoring Robot slows down when user nears and stops if the user gets too close; 4. Hand guiding The user is in direct contact with the robot while they are guiding and training it. Power and force limiting application A static or dynamic force exerted on a robot beyond its set limit will prompt it to stop safely. In other words, once the light weight robot hits an object its actuators and brakes act to provide less energy in the direction of the impact. Some robots will stop and others will respond by moving in the opposite direction of the impact. They can be used in a wide range of applications.

ith our New Year’s resolutions announced, with most declaring a healthier, fitter lifestyle, there are more and more of us hitting the gym and pounding the pavements. But Physiotherapists say the key to getting fit in the new year is staying injury-free. Queensland physiotherapist Ryan Adam encourages everyone to get on board with the “New Year, New Me” concept popular on social media, but we all must be mindful of overdoing things.

1. check yourself before wrecking yourself Subtle injuries can arise over a couple of weeks or a couple of months and rear their ugly head. Additionally can get some obvious acute strains and sprains from just going too hard. And right now is when we should be starting to feel it… “Late January, February and March, those early months of the year are when people start to roll in with niggles or worse from their new pursuits, says Mr Adam.” In order to steer clear of injuries as you work towards your fitness goals for 2018, here are the top five tips to jot down in your fitness diary.

The first rule is that you should always check the level of intensity at which you can comfortably work out. When picking an activity, think about the intensity of it; think about what your normal intensity of activity is and try to match it. Don’t go from low intensity pottering around the garden to high intensity throwing a lot of weight around. Be aware of your limits, and tailor exercise programs based on your needs. With multiple amounts of advertising from every direction from fitness centres promoting high intensity training, such as F45, Cross-fit and boot-camps, many of us see it as a quick way to get into shape. While it may get results quickly, these types of activities have the highest risk of injury.

Basically the rule is to take your time, progress slowly, and listen to your body.


2. be aware of the impact

CLN | ISSUE 10 | FEB-MAY ‘18 Almost every form of activity has an impact on your body, but some can be more damaging than others, particularly after periods of inactivity.

A lot of people think running is a natural form of exercise and everyone should be able to do it, but we’re a bit of a sedentary society and sometimes that leaves the body a little unprepared - Even running! What about walking? Well walking too far can also take its toll on the body. People don’t realise that walking is still impact exercise. You still have to absorb shock with every step you take. For example if you decide to walk 6 kilometres and you’ve only ever done 300 metres around the shopping centre, then you’re going to feel it.

3. take it slow To avoid impact injuries it’s best to start slowly and work your way up to longer distances and more impactful activities. “Pick a low-impact option at first — swimming, biking, rowing, or other things like that — and then graduate that impact as you go,” Mr Adam said. Newbies to the fitness world need to take care with everything, or consult with someone first, even for basic things like walking and running.

4. do your research If you have not exercised in some time, or have been doing low levels of exercise, be sure to pick the activity that best suits you. Pick an activity you know your body can handle in regards to balance and complexity. If you have never done single-leg squats or walking lunges before, you might want to avoid them to start.

5. high school fitness level does not apply

Boot camps cause a lot of injuries over time because people aren’t used to that type of movement...

And, in case you needed reminding, your champion running efforts in high school mean nothing if you have done little of it since. If you haven’t run in six months or two years, don’t expect to be able to run 5 kilometres without getting some sort of injury eventually. But, if you want to start running again, there’s a lot of information available. You just have to spend an hour or two looking at what a normal running progression is. If for example, you wish to go from the couch to running 5 kilometres, there might be a 12-week program that shows how you can build up gradually and monitor your symptoms along the way. So it’s important to do a bit of research and look at how to progress.

n our current climate of ever-changing connectivity, industry is often one of the very last to adopt and embrace new technology. There are a number of reasons why this is, and it may all seem too hard to consider change or having the time, and money to do it, however most of the time most organisations tend to play it safe. When we compare the same scenario to the consumer world, it would be rare to find someone without a smart phone with 24/7 data connectivity. Our expectations are high and we tend to want information when we want it. At our fingertips we can find out what tomorrow’s weather is, traffic conditions, transport timetable, browse online, check the local surf conditions all while being able to customise what we see and do in any way we desire. We can have the data delivered to us anytime and anywhere. These days we can catch up with the latest TV shows, stream a movie, or read a book on our mobile device.

If the same technology is available, why shouldn’t machines have the same connectivity? Why do we need to send vehicles out to work-sites to make sure things are running properly? Why should we collect readouts from sensors or meters? With today’s tech, industrial equipment can be just as connected as the people who install it.

the industrial world Let’s consider the industrial world. Beyond OPC UA’s solid stance as the most widely recognised and used protocol standard to connect industrial devices of all flavours to the edge or cloud for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications, there are number of other protocols vying for wider use in the industrial space. These protocols include MQTT, AMQP and CoAP, among others. As they compete for this space, support for MQTT across automation technology suppliers is gaining speed, and giving users a tool to transform their reactive maintenance operations into proactive ones by collecting data from the field to any number of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) cloud

based platforms without IT involvement. How can it avoid IT? The reason this is possible is that this connection is just outbound communications, so there are no security concerns. Add it’s very high-speed performance because of MQTT’s method of reporting by exception and it starts to sound pretty attractive.

The MQTT protocol allows the IIoT to work with legacy equipment, which is great news because it doesn’t make sense to ‘buy’ a solution that requires everything to be ripped out. It’s ok to start in a new factory, but part of the attraction of MQTT is that it is affordable for businesses that have been around for some time.

Key aspects to MQTT’s rise in the IIoT space include: ACCESS Control over who can access an MQTT topic and which operations are allowed are both defined in the MQTT server. DIVERSITY Content of an MQTT message can be XML, JSON, text, images, etc., which makes it suitable for diverse industrial applications. SECURITY This is a critical factor in the industrial control space. MQTT issues birth and death certificates upon new client connections on the network and when connections are lost, respectively.

BANDWIDTH Upon connection, MQTT initially publishes everything about the connected device to the MQTT broker. After that initial burst of data, MQTT only publishes information as data from that device changes. This is key to the low network bandwidth requirements of MQTT, in addition to its small seven-byte header.

Highlighting the positive bandwidth impact of MQTT that makes the protocol so appealing is an example of a company that previously used polling (versus MQTT’s publish/subscribe reporting by exception method) to access their remote plant’s PLC data. Before switching to MQTT, this company incurred costs for cellular transmission of three gigabytes of data each month from the remote PLCs. Using MQTT, they now only collect three megabytes of data a month. In 2015, photos emerged of iconic sights like the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx - sights that were once crowded with tourists, now lie deserted. However key tourist sights including Abu Simbel, Luxor, the Pyramids of Giza and the Red Sea coast are all still considered safe (and very affordable). Let’s look at some of Egypt’s top travel sights while its still here.

Taking a Felucca down the Nile is a must do when visiting Egypt. Feluccas are sail boats that have been used on the Nile since antiquity. You can take short sunset sails in Cairo and Alexandria or you can opt for longer cruises which usually depart from Aswan. A Felucca is not quite as comfortable as a luxury cruise ship but nothing can beat sailing in a quiet rig that was designed thousands of years ago.

The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx The Pyramids of Giza represent one of the greatest architectural feats by man. The last surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the world’s oldest tourist attractions and the reason most people visit Egypt today. There are in fact three main pyramids in Giza; the Great Pyramid of Khufu (or Cheops), The Pyramid of Kafhre and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt. In front of the pyramids lies the Sphinx, or Abu al-Hol in Arabic, “Father of Terror”. Carved out of a single block of stone, this enormous cat-like sculpture has mesmerized millions of visitors. Chaotic, exotic, smelly, dusty, but beautiful, Cairo is the home to over 16 million. Medieval Cairo is a warren of streets just bustling with life. There are mosques at every corner, Coptic churches, huge medieval gates and bazaars selling everything from motorbike parts to perfumes. Highlights include the Citadel and the Khan Al-Khalili bazaar (for all your tourist trinkets).

Abu Simbel Next, to the Pyramids of Giza, Abu Simbel is perhaps the most recognized monument of ancient Egypt. The two temples built for the pharaoh Ramesses II have been attracting visitors since Victorian times. Almost as impressive as the monument itself is the story of its restoration in the 1960’s. The temples had to be dismantled and physically moved 60 meters up a cliff where they were reassembled in the exact same relation to each other and the sun.

If you’re an amateur snorkeler or a professional diver you will love Hurghada on the Red Sea. One of Egypt’s top destinations for those looking to simply relax on the beach or enjoy some of the world’s clearest waters and spectacular coral reefs. Hurghada offers more than 10 miles of beach and plenty of accommodation, restaurants, and nightclubs for all budgets. Diving is the most popular attraction here and there are numerous diving centers and schools around town. You can expect to see hundreds of spectacular fish both along the shore and around the nearby islands.

If you travel to Luxor (ancient Thebes) then it will be hard to miss the spectacular Luxor Temple situated in the centre of Luxor city. The Temple of Luxor was built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II around 1400BC. Its main purpose was to celebrate the festival of Opet. Many rulers built on to the temple yet it always remained a place of worship for Christians and later Muslims. A mosque built inside the temple still exists and is one of the highlights of the site.

S olution Control Logic was initially engaged in the design specification according to AS4024 to provide the basis for the Skyway cabin to operate in a safe manner, however successful progress enab led engagement throughout the entir e build. Once the designs and plans were final ised, the race began to deliver the project within a 5 week window before its seasonal visitors were expected to visit (in droves). The Schmersal PSC1 safe ty controller was used as the ‘brains’ for the station doors to provide complete control. Schmersal SLC440COM light curtains were mounted between the doors ensuring young and old are kept safe when boarding and to avoid being caught. Finally Schmersal’s AZM400 solenoid interlocks were utilised to verify the glass station doors are closed and locked when the cabin is in motion, ensuring everyone is safe from the valley drop . Control Logic provided safety cons ultation services to verify and validate the station automatic doors operated acco rding to the Australian safety standard s.

Benefits In addition to providing safety for all occupants, the Schmersal controller provides a simple interface for complex and risky situations that can easily expand beyond hundreds of IO. This application required CAT 4 safety and an adaptive controller that permits varying scenarios while reducing component count to make the system easy to commission and fault find. Should any operating aspect of the Skyway change in the future, the PSC1 Schmersal controller can be reprogrammed and revalidated to allow for new additions without excessive expenditure, thereby future proofing the installation. Utilising the newest technologies from Schmersal, the new AZM400 solenoid interlocks were critically used as the main locks for the platform station doors. With RFID technology, 10,000N lateral holding force and a high misalignment tolerance, this solution was ideal for the application. The red emergency exit levers allow the doors to be easily unlocked manually in power outages or emergency situations. Control Logic managed the project to fruition, thus providing Scenic World with one point of contact for safety design services, automation, manufacturing and fitting the station doors from design to execution. It saved time, additional costs and allowed a deeper and direct understanding of Scenic World’s requirements. Interaction with multiple contractors was eradicated which allowed Scenic World to focus on the larger project at hand. Finally being able to validate and verify the station’s automatic doors under the AS4024 standards allowed Control logic to ensure a reliable and safe operation for the future in a quick turn-around time.
