Engineers use electricity to clean up toxic water

Control Logic joins IPD Group Control Logic has joined the IPD Group, effective from 1 October. The acquisition will provide a complete end-to-end solution nationally and allow Control Logic to grow and expand as quickly as technology develops and as its customer needs change. IPD Group is a privately-owned Australian company servicing the electrical industry for more than 65 years in power distribution, power monitoring, industrial control, renewables and test and measurement. “We want to reassure all our customers that it is business as usual,” commented General Manager of Control Logic, Michael Bacon, “Moving forward, we can offer the benefits of IPD’s service and testing capabilities, taking Control Logic from a product and systems supplier to a true solutions provider.”

Depth sensing, laser smart drill The Robbox Inc xDrill is the smartphone of power tools, complete with touchscreen! Like all drills, it can work in forward and reverse, accept standard bits with twistto-tighten chuck and a rechargeable battery. Its screen most basic use is as a digital level, to ensure the drill bit is at a desired angle. It can also drill to a specific depth using its touch screen, as well as measuring other distances using a pair of built-in laser rangefinders.

Speed and torque is all adjustable, and can even connect over Bluetooth for even more adjustment.

University of Sydney engineers have found a way to use electricity to clean up heavily polluted industrial wastewater.

The wastewater, which contained carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus was generated in a pilot plant, designed by the team for the production of biofuels using naturally abundant microalgae. Utilising specialised electrodes, electricity was discharged driving oxidation reactions near the electrode surfaces to transform organic contaminants into harmless gasses, ions or minerals. The incredibly powerful process eliminates even the most persistent non-biodegradable pollutants, and does not require the addition of chemicals or produce additional waste streams. It showed the process is particularly effective for mitigating organic pollution which is common to a variety of industries, with the potential to tackle inorganics, such as heavy metals. The team now plans to focus on specific contaminants to better understand the chemical transformations that take place during oxidation.

Beetle robotic camera backpacks!

A tiny robotic camera system that is small and light enough to fit on the back of insects has been developed. The camera can stream live monochrome video to a companion smartphone via Bluetooth at one to five frames per second at a resolution up to 160x120 pixels. While not exactly high-res, it’s tiny and weighs just 248 milligrams as well as a pivoting 60º arm to create panoramic images. An onboard accelerometer triggers image capture, and is capable of capturing 6 hours of usage from a single 10mAh battery. Researchers said this tech could be useful when studying insects in the field as they walk freely (and in first person) in their environment.

Nissan’s first fully-electric SUV with up to 600km range

Scheduled for sale in Japan mid 2021, the Nissan ‘Ariya’ electric crossover looks incredibly appealing and futuristic, but is about 5 million yen ($67K). It will have autonomous driving technology and a decent range. There are four variants that include a pair of twowheel-drive (2WD) offerings, and two all-wheel-drive (AWD) offerings that features Nissan’s ‘e-4ORCE’ all-wheel-drive system consisting of two electric motors, one driving each axle. Choose from either a 65kWh battery or a larger 90kWh battery which offers up to 610km of range in 2WD. Meanwhile, the 65kWh battery offers up to 450km of range in 2WD variants, or up to 430km in AWD variants.

The flagship’s 0-100 acceleration is 5.1 seconds.

Red Lion release Crimson 3.2 software

Red Lion have released version 3.2 of their Crimson software to compliment their FlexEdge platform. You’ll find new features for advanced network capabilities including routing, VLAN support, VPN client/server and certificate management. In addition, symbol libraries and primitives have expanded, such as anti-aliased rendering for creative interface design. Support for over 300 protocol drivers, including Modbus RTU, and TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, Emerson ROC and both DNP3 serial and Ethernet communications is also available.

World’s first mobile sanitiser sticker As we begin to recover from the pandemic, products such as the UVLyzer has become more relevant. The device works by being mounted onto the rear of a smartphone and provides users with the ability to activate the internal UV-C LEDs within. This light can then be swept over any surface to quickly and effectively kill 99.9% of the germs, bacteria and viruses that could be lurking on it. Its ultra-slim design keeps the aesthetic of your phone and will stay in place thanks to a simple peel-and-stick design. A built-in USB-C port will allow for easy recharging when required and a built-in smart sensor turns it off if angled upwards.

A new machine learning algorithm allows researchers to explore possible designs for the microstructure of fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries, before running 3D simulations to make changes and improve performance. Improvements could include faster smartphone charging, increasing the time between charges for electric vehicles, and increasing the power of hydrogen fuel cells running data centres. Energy performance is closely related to the microstructure, and how the pores (holes) inside are shaped and arranged, affecting how much power fuel cells can generate.

Because the micrometre-scale pores are so small, their specific shapes and sizes can be difficult to study. Using a novel machine learning technique to generate 3D image data of the microstructure obtained from nano-scale imaging performed synchrotrons, researchers discovered they could train their code to generate either much larger datasets that have all the same properties, or deliberately generate structures that would result in better performing batteries.

Facebook create super-slim VR glasses

Facebook have created a new proof-of-concept virtual reality headset that looks like a set piece from Back to the Future II. Incredibly slim, it’s worn like large sunglasses and uses holographics with flat films for the optics. It has a thickness of less than 9mm, which is helped in part by polarisation-based optical folding that moves the light forward and back multiple times. While the prototype only outputs in monochrome, Facebook promises a wider colour range when the technology is ready. The company is also hoping to eliminate visible pixels and address battery life challenges and device connections. This could lead to VR glasses you can wear for hours which would be a game changer. Many companies have been circling around the idea of glasses-like AR/VR headsets that combine the best of both technologies into a single device, with Microsoft, Apple and Google all developing their own versions in the background. Very interesting.

Traditional firewalls based on access control will not help always be sufficient to secure an ICS Network.

Transactional information in industrial protocols exists in the application layer. An example is Modbus/TCP where Modbus function information is carried in the application payload. Traditional insecure serial based protocols such as Modbus and DNP3 are riding on open standards such as TCP/IP, which multiplies the security risk by having more devices and protocols running across a network.

Think of an envelope in snail mail. You can recognise it as an envelope, and you can even see who it is from and where it is going. This could be mapped to a standard firewall where you can limit the IP address by source and destination, and even port information, but that is as complex as it gets. In terms of this example, the content inside the sealed envelope, such as a friendly letter, is where the real information lies protected; this is where DPI really occurs.

In terms of a firewall with DPI technology, this is what is actually happening. The firewall looks at the specific letters, if you will, in that packet on the wire. But how does a signature-based system (such as Snort) differ from a truly protocol-specific DPI engine?

Signature-based deep packet inspection: A reactive, packet matching strategy Going back to the envelope and letter analogy, in the case of a signature-based approach, it is akin to saying that the letter can only have certain words in a certain order, and they can only be presented in this specific way.

A signature-based system is a reactive system in which a vulnerability (vuln) must already be known so as to be able to design the signature to identify it, which in turn also implies that the vuln is already out in the wild. This signature functions by essentially being overlaid on a packet (mapping a set of bytes against a known byte pattern) of a specific vulnerability.

There are two ways you could utilise the signaturebased approach. You could use it to identify known vulnerabilities (blacklisting) and thus your signatures only identify those specific anomalies and allow everything else through the firewall – this means it would certainly not catch any new or non-published vulnerabilities.

On the other hand, if you built a signature list to allow only a certain packet set -- meaning you would have a very large signature database -(whitelisting) and drop all packets that are not in that set, then your protective mechanism is only as good as your allowed set of signatures. To be truly effective, those allowed signatures would have to be as detailed as possible.

Signatures are not simple to write and should be as granular to a specific plant as possible; that means the plant operator or engineer would have to write a custom signature. In my mind, this is a stretch too far. This is why the signatures are usually just blacklisted items with the default policy to allow everything else. In general, signatures come in the form of a large database to be updated weekly or daily (think virus software). This also means some process must be in place to actively grab these signature files and bring them to a plant floor to be pushed out to the security devices. As we all know, the plant network should be well segmented and thus no direct Internet connection should reach the ICS. Signature-based DPI is prevalent in the IT world and is heavily used by Internet service providers (ISPs). One common use would be for BitTorrent traffic.

Protocol-specific deep packet inspection: A proactive “all-knowing” strategy On the other hand, in a DPI system that validates a protocols structure, the sequence of packets and proper byte values is far more robust than a signature-based system. In fact, it can also be used to limit specific register ranges of a protocol, or even validate that a specific value at a specific range can only be x,y,z, for example.

This ‘all knowing’ knowledge of the protocol is proactive rather than reactive in that it can potentially protect vulnerabilities in a PLC’s protocol implementation without having to be updated.

In addition, it could theoretically protect against vulnerabilities

not yet known. This is because it would already have the ability to catch an ‘off-by-one’ error or a buffer overflow since it is already validating maximum size of fields as outlined in the protocol specification.

Hirschmann’s Tofino appliance implements deep packet inspection for a range of industrial protocols that combine protocol specific DPI with a traditional stateful inspection firewall. It allows you to select the protocols and load them to the device as required to meet the security needs of different applications.

In the SCADA/ICS industry there is a real need to enhance or implement security, even more so now that everything is rapidly becoming interconnected. Both signature-based and protocolspecific DPIs provide additional layers of filtering. Before DPI, a plant engineer could only require the firewall to open a port and let every read or write command flow down to their PLC. Signature-based DPI has a role to play in Defence in Depth, though it is difficult to keep the signatures up-to-date in industrial networks that are segmented from the outside world and highly sensitive to change. However, the depth of an implementation is more important than breadth. A firewall vendor may say they support 500 protocols, but to what extent? Validating a single byte in one protocol does not mean ‘you support DPI’ for that protocol.

Protocol-based DPI is more robust and gives plant engineers the ability to limit the use of a write command or block writes entirely for a specific industrial protocol. It is also more suited to the

industrial environment, as it does not require engineers to write signatures and it can provide protection to PLCs without requiring frequent updates.

Depending on a single defence, such as perimeter firewall, is building a security solution based on a single point of failure.

Make sure that your facility has a proper Defence in Depth design where the network, control devices and systems are collectively hardened - thereby providing reliable security for the plant floor.

armonics can cause damage to sensitive electronic equipment, interference to communication equipment, noisy motors, tripping of circuit breakers, blowing of fuses and capacitor failures. Over time, these slight nuances eventually lead to greater problems for surrounding businesses and supply authorities. To put it in perspective, a typical Variable Speed Drive (VSD) outputs around 35% of total harmonic current distortion (THDi), effectively distorting the supply authority’s sine wave which requires bulky and expensive external equipment to reduce these harmonics. Thankfully ABB has just released the ultra-low harmonic (ULH) drive to overcome these issues.

In this closer look, we look at ABB’s recently released wall mount ultra-low harmonic drives with a claimed maximum 3% THDi (4 to 110KW).

The all-in-one concept of the water ACQ580-31 and HVAC ACH580-31 versions are physically the same, but what sets these apart is industry specific functions such as pump cleaning for the water drive or stairwell pressurisation with fire mode for HVAC.

first impressions Having previously reviewed the ABB ACQ580-01 Water Drive from CLN issue 10, we wanted to check-out the harmonic water variant; the ACQ580-31. You would think that this version would be considerably larger considering it has an inbuilt active front-end that uses IGBT technology, however it is much smaller and compact than anticipated. Infact it’s only marginally larger than the standard version.

Both the ACH and ACQ drives are neatly packaged with a Bluetooth compatible LED display keypad that can be connected through Apple’s or Google’s app store. This gains a lot more information at your fingertips while commissioning or fault-finding machines. It’s a feature ABB have implemented throughout its drive range, and we love it.

CLN | ISSUE 19 This is very simple to install. There are three wires in and three wires out with no external hardware required. When you power up the VSD, there is an onboard LED control panel ‘first start assistant’ which runs through the installation process with you, similar to setting up new hardware on your PC.

Once configured, you have further options to go into a menu option called ‘Primary Settings’ where you can do further parameterisation of the drive without having to refer to a manual. It’s pretty intuitive.

There is also the choice to go into the parameter’s menu from where all the drives parameters are accessible including a parameter group where the active front end settings can be viewed, which is purely handling the low harmonics. However, it was not necessary to change any of the default settings relating to the active front end. We only had to input a few basic motor parameters and how we wanted to start / stop the drive, which took no time at all.

The ACQ580-31 series has a range of program features specifically designed for the water and wastewater industry such as pump cleaning, soft pipe fill, dry run protection and flow rate calculator without using a flow meter to name but a few - check out Issue 10 for information on that.

In this review, it’s all about low harmonics. We used an oscilloscope to determine if the drive did what it claimed. Sure enough, the findings were within spec and we did not need to play with the active front end parameters to get the desired results, it just works straight out of the box.

Other features that caught our attention were the IP55 rating which means the drive can be mounted in harsh conditions and not inside a cabinet where heat ventilation is a common challenge for VSD’s. This means it is possible to mount the drive somewhere in a plant room wall which would make it fast and easy to install while being a good cost saver on labour. The TUV certified SIL 3 or Category 4 rated safe torque off (STO) means you do not have to use safety contactors which again saves space and cost, while ensuring personal safety is a priority.

The release of this Ultra-Low harmonic 580 series now means ABB has the benefits of a drive without the inconvenience of harmonics from 4kw to 110kw in a wall mount version and 132kW to 355KW in a cabinet form factor.

So whether you work in the water or HVAC industries, the ACQ580-31 and ACH580-31 Ultra-Low Harmonic drives provide all the same features for the smooth running and protection of pumps and fans - but in a compact wall mount footprint. You can expect a reduction in current harmonic output by over 30%, which basically means there is no risk of exceeding supply authority network limits for harmonics in large installations. The end result is lower energy costs by not drawing reactive power from the network and not adversely affecting other equipment which can lead to a bottomless pit of rectifying blown or damaged equipment from nuisance power related issues.

First point-of-contact and motorbike enthusiast Stewart Turnbull discusses covid life and industrial trends.

You speak with many people from various industries every day in your role - what comments are you hearing in relation to this pandemic that simply won’t go away?

A lot of the customers constantly ask about how our business is going. Everybody seems to be worried long term about how we will come back from Covidity.

With uncertainty being such a common theme, how do you think businesses are dealing with it?

Many seem to be holding back on projects due to uncertainty, however, they are looking what can be improved in their day-to-day maintenance. Cyber security, efficiency and Comm products are all very popular at the moment.

Companies often aren’t aware that there are literally thousands of dollars to be saved by replacing their existing equipment even after the cost to replace it, why do you think that is?

Of course the old saying comes to mind... ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. The down time, installation, labour and getting it to run correctly can certainly all add up, so unless it fails they may not even think about it. If we think about the latest drives for instance, they are much more efficient now, especially the regenerative types which send all their excess energy back into the grid making it a great way to save energy and money.

Since Covid many of us have had to do business differently, are you finding your role has changed?

Not a great deal of change for me, as I still work at Brisbane’s headquarters, although the commute is much quicker!

What are your passions? Have they changed since Covid?

My passions are still cooking and motorcycles, but I have been testing my cooking skills of late. I had missed riding, and it has been only the last month where i’ve been able to.

With international travel out of the question, what’s your pick for domestic travel?

Anywhere in Queensland where you can look up at the stars and spend some money with the locals.

Best thing to do on a weekend?

Ride the bike! Always gives me a huge smile.

Carmakers have experimented with hydrogen vehicles for decades, using fuel cells to convert the most abundant substance in the Universe into electric energy. Hydrogen fuel cell cars have batteries onboard which store hydrogen and oxygen and power the vehicle with chemical reactions between the two elements to create water and energy. Sometimes known as fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), they have exhaust pipes but the only thing that escapes from them is water. The cars need refuelling, but with hydrogen rather than petrol or diesel fuel. For each fill of hydrogen, the car will gain 320-405km

For instance, the $140k Tesla Model S Long Range has a range of 600 kms. Other cars, however, can cost significantly less yet offer half the range. The Nissan Leaf for example, comes with a $50K price tag and a realworld range of 250klms.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles tend to be more frugal than their battery electric counterparts. The Hyundai Nexo comes with a real-world range of 666kms and filling up takes just five minutes, whereas electric charging can be an hour-long affair at the best of times.

As hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are still in their infancy, there aren’t any models at the budget end of the market. But on range alone, hydrogen seems to have the upper hand.

EMISSIONS It’s a common misconception that electric and hydrogen cars are zero emissions.

While no gasses are emitted from their exhausts, the manufacturing process for both types of vehicle still results in CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere. Manufacturing a lithium-ion battery for an electric car is a “very energy-intensive” process. As an example, a 100kWh battery will give a potential range of 400 kms and, in order to produce that battery, it will take around 20 tonnes of CO2. A typical battery lasts for 245,000kms, so that equates to around 83g/km of CO2. Then, when you take into account charging over that same distance, the same battery car will deliver 124g/km of CO2 over its lifetime.

Electric cars rise to prominence as more viable alternatives to steam cars, which can take 45 minutes to start, and gasoline cars, which have to be cranked to start plus complicated gear shifting.

VERDICT

While electric cars appear to have the edge in today’s environment, a number of manufacturers are still committed to hydrogen fuel cell cars meaning that the technology may one day find its place in the motoring world.

COST OF OWNERSHIP

Electric vehicles aren’t the cheapest cars on sale.

For example, a Jaguar I-Pace will set customers back about $125K, while a Renault Zoe can be had for around $50K. Customers do however, save money on charging with an average cost of $4.50 in electricity to travel 100kms.

But if you thought owning an electric car was expensive, think again. Not only are hydrogen cars more expensive to buy outright, they are also costly when it comes to filling up. A Hyundai Nexo, for instance, carries a price tag of $120K in the UK after government grants. While that isn’t drastically more than the I-Pace, a full tank in a hydrogen car could cost anywhere between $80 and $140 based on UK pricing.

The reality is hydrogen fuel cell cars are several years behind battery electric vehicles in terms of innovation, which is why they’re so expensive to own and run. Given enough time and money, hydrogen vehicles may become the more accessible option for our kids or grandkids. But electric cars are evolving at a rapid rate too, and more environmentally-friendly battery options may open up in the future.

For now, though, electric cars appear to be the go-to mode of transport for those looking to do their part in cutting emissions.

Unmanaged switches: the basics Unmanaged switches serve only one purpose: to provide Ethernet devices with a network connection so they can communicate with one another. Because they don’t allow for configuration or require setup, unmanaged switches cannot control network traffic, however, this makes them easy to deploy.

An unmanaged switch is typically used on smaller networks or when a simple service is required from the device such as conversion from fibre to copper or an installation that allows you to have a spare port for your maintenance laptop when connected to a device at the edge of a network. When comparing the costs between managed vs. unmanaged switches, unmanaged are always less expensive as there is less hardware required and significantly less R&D software costs without having to worry about firmware functionality.

Managed switches provide the same functionality as unmanaged switches with several key added benefits. A managed switch as the name implies offers management of the device which allows you to configure, monitor and troubleshoot the network as well as affect the traffic from your devices as it passes through the network.

With the ability to create virtual networks within the system using VLANs, prioritise traffic around the network with Quality of Service, prevent network loops with redundancy protocols such as RSTP or MRP and the ability to ensure the correct delivery of Multicast information for protocols such as Ethernet/IP utilising IGMP a managed switch offers a broad variety of features that are crucial for ensuring the network can deliver uninterrupted traffic for your critical assets.On top of all that the security features in a managed switch allow for control of which assets are allowed to communicate to which on a network, which devices can connect to which ports, which users are allowed to login to manage the switches and reporting to key services all of the above.

So which is right for you?

How much downtime can you accept?

If downtime isn’t an option, then managed switches are the right choice. Built-in redundancy safeguards against downtime by providing an alternate data path. Managed switches also control traffic to make sure the most important information gets through, can prevent traffic from causing malfunctions and allow individual control of switch port access for each network user.

Do you need control over settings?

If you want to be able to manage, configure and monitor LAN settings—including traffic, channel prioritisation, etc.—then managed switches will allow you to do so.

How important is security?

Is there a lot of highly sensitive data being transmitted across the network? If so, then managed switches are the most appropriate choice. They allow for network segmentation and can limit network access to only trusted devices and authorised users.

Do you want remote access?

Managed switches can provide updates on network status, notify you of potential problems and let you troubleshoot and correct issues.

This may even reduce the need for 24/7 onsite staff monitoring.

he automation of Australia’s industries has been in the works for some time now. Australia is a world leader in adopting mining equipment, which is unsurprising given our reliance on mining exports. Investment in automation and digitalisation is set to lead to a revival of manufacturing lost to more competitive producers.

Companies quickly realise that they lack the foundational digital platforms and systems on which to build other applications in a scalable, competitive way, whether those applications were for new services, a more efficient way to manage their operations, or deeper insight into pricing and selling of services.

Remote monitoring and diagnostics for field service technicians is an attractive initial use of digital because of the nature of the business. Many industrial goods makers have large contingents of technicians who work on customer equipment. If companies can remotely monitor how equipment is running, they can gather the data they need to identify problems in real time and dispatch technicians with the appropriate knowledge and spare parts. Companies can also use remote monitoring to collect the data needed to improve shift scheduling and workforce planning.

Enablers are the key. Enabler technologies are the digital platforms and systems through which information flows. They include the embedded sensors and other devices that collect the data, the networks that move the data, and the software applications and other technologies that ensure that the data being collected is accurate, secure, and sharable.

In a 2020 benchmarking survey, companies included four enabler technologies among the ten applications of digital services that they believe are most relevant to their business:

Data management systems

Data management systems store and share data in a way that is efficient and scalable, with the appropriate levels of security and reliability. They are centrally governed and provide a single point of reference for each piece of information. Smart equipment

Smart equipment includes sensors that measure basic parameters such as pressure, rotation, and vibration—information that serves as the basis for equipment monitoring and other services. It either reacts autonomously or sends only the relevant information, thus saving time and bandwidth. Benchmark companies pegged smart equipment as the second most relevant digital service for their business.

IoT backbone architecture IoT backbone systems are the conduits that allow data from devices and controls to seamlessly integrate with cloud systems and with a company’s applications and interfaces. Companies ranked IoT backbone architecture sixth among the top ten digital services applications.

Equipment connectivity This enabler technology transmits data in real time and reacts to actions from a company’s systems, such as requests for information. Equipment connectivity ranked eighth among the top ten applications of digital services. Connecting new and existing equipment remains a major challenge. Connectivity is a key enabler of digital services. If equipment is connected, companies can collect the data that they need to improve service and sales operations and offer new services.

Cyber security underpins the success of Industry 4.0 We rely on digital infrastructure and the data that it carries, and there is a strong

need to have measures in place. Security implications of compromised IoT devices include production downtime, damage to equipment or facilities that could include catastrophic equipment failure, and in extreme cases, loss of life. As industry moves to capture the business value that comes with Industry 4.0, the need to address the cyber risk landscape with a secure, vigilant, and resilient response has likely never been greater.

lthough often overlooked, small standalone machines must adhere to workplace safety standards like AS 60204 and IEC 13849. Reasons for ignoring this kind of machine may be age of the machine, space for safety components, added complexity combined with on-site inability to implement or perceived loss of production. However, it is the responsibility of the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) to provide and maintain safe plant, and such reasons would not hold up in court. Further, the costs associated with personal injury exceed the cost implementing a compliant safety system. T

he start of a new decade normally starts with optimism, long term future plans and a renewal of energy and focus. Yet 2020 presented massive challenges. Australia was hit with its worst ever bushfires, losing 7.7 million hectares of land (an area larger than Ireland) – with 3,000 properties burnt to the ground and 33 lives lost, resulting in an estimated $1 billion in damage.

Following this, parts of the country that had not seen rain for years celebrated rain, while the shadow of the Coronavirus outbreak began to spread, leading to the activation of the Australian Health Sector Emergency Response Plan for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the 27th of February.

Within weeks, the industries of community and professional sport, fitness, aquatic and recreation had been shut down while people embraced the request to ‘stay at home’ with the true Australian grit we expect.

The backbone of Australia As an industry we have experienced two decades of growth in traditional sports clubs, driven by 30% population growth, set against an underlying trend (and well documented) move away from traditional sports provision.

The question now is whether changes resulting from Coronavirus closures will fast track this trend and what can we do to embrace this movement and ensure that that sport as we know it also survives. The pressure on sport at all levels has already been documented during the COVID-19 crisis with many elite sports suffering or on the verge of economic collapse with the worry that the subsequent knock on effect to community sport. Numerous commentators are asking if we at a ‘crossroads’ for sport, whether the way Australian sport is structured is sustainable and whether multiple levels of sporting administration is too ‘heavy’ and draining.

Financial challenges So how can these challenges can be embraced, and how can sports reconnect or even be rebuilt for the future. Why are some sports teetering on the edge, regularly staving off financial hardships and seemingly living month to month or even beyond their means?

When we saw Virgin Australia enter voluntary administration, they had the intention on restructuring and becoming more sustainable and robust with a new owner.

Should sport establish something similar? Should there be a collaboration between sport, community and commercial organisations?

This could mean that sport will see more entrepreneurs like NBL owner Larry Kestleman running the professional leagues. This approach being an alternative to complement the ‘One Sport’ model that Sport Australia has been exploring. This could allow NSOs (national sports organisations) to refocus their roles to national team management and growing participation. Ultimately, the industry will need to rethink their funding models, including the user pay system to cover costs and how to represent value offered to participants.

Re-imagining sport Once lockdowns are finally lifted and eased nationwide or even worldwide, can we expect that passionate sports participants will return to what they have done previously, with the majority of us finding alternative ways to exercise and stay active during the pandemic. More people have been walking and running by themselves, have set up their garages as home gyms, and have developed routines around the home. Will or has everyone return(ed) to the gyms and traditional sports clubs?

Sport will need to reinvent itself and re-attract people into sport by adapting the offering to persuade the broader community.

Combining traditional competitive sport clubs with recreational participation has been the strategy for several years, but with limited success for NSOs. Cycling Australia’s recognition that more people cycle than compete is a great example and watching how they have established their ‘Join the Ride’ initiative could be the starting point post COVID-19 for many other sports. The same could be with swimming clubs, who could now offer ‘Stroke correction’ classes for lap swimmers or open water training by their coaches for example.

The advancements in single board PC processing power and lower costs, it makes sense to combine both the real-time automation OS and Linux OS on to one device. This effectively increases overall capabilities and logic control execution rate whilst gaining the ability to securely interact. The primary concern here, is maintaining a robust real time OS for control functionality including PLCs, so the automation functionality is not compromised.

Virtualisation

Mainstream virtualisation concepts, or type2 is the combination of hardware, firmware, and software running on traditional hosted OS environment. Common on desktop or server PCs which unfortunately requires large amounts or memory, CPU core utilisation and lots of latency.

Recently, virtualisation capability has been extended beyond the PC environment to specialised industrial logic controllers such as programmable logic or automation controllers (PACs) used for process and machine automation. This creates more options for automation device manufactures to advance the device capabilities and push the boundaries of automation.

What we can expect...

Today, Type 1 virtualisation or “native” virtualisation is a hypervisor OS if you will, running directly on the bare metal hardware without an underlying OS. The hypervisor partitions the hardware itself to each OS, which means a four-core process can have two dedicated cores for each partition.

The result is a very efficient use of multicore processors and tightly integrated approach where each virtual machine can be recovered or rebooted without affecting the other. So good in fact, the software execution is very low latency and jitter, which is ideal for real-time deterministic or time-sensitive applications with critical control.

Linux is not new – it’s been around a long time but has never achieved mainstream status. However pairing Linux on top of a virtualised automation controller like an Emerson PAC or Red Lion’s FlexEdge adds a new and exciting level of capabilities never-before thought possible. For example, enabling analytics closer to the source of operational data, adding encryption, VPN tunnelling, cloud connectivity, Radius authentication, advanced visualisations, crosspollinating OT and IT communication protocols or software such as database connections at the PLC, undoubtedly become the nexus for the convergence of IT and OT.

This interaction between the two operating systems is twofold, as mentioned it provides IT abilities in the automation environment. Second, it adds a new layer of control functionality that requires a new approach or thinking to grasp the possibilities.

The client required a 4GX capable solution suitable for the power market. Given the sheer number of devices needed to be replaced, the client also has a time and resources challenge, thus the solution needed to be efficient to roll out.

The client sought out a vendor to assist through this process, with support an important factor leading up to deployment. In addition, the solution needed to be flexible and comply with a long list of cyber security requirements that reflect industry bestpractices. Physically, the hardware must be reliable and ruggedized for challenging electrical environments and extreme temperatures of 75°C. Solution Control Logic proposed an end-to-end solution from Garderos, who develop utility-grade routing hardware, operating systems and software solutions in Germany. explosion protection TOP 5 FAQ

n electrical engineering, explosion protection is usually associated with hazardous locations where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases, flammable liquid–produced vapours, combustible dusts, or ignitable fibres present in the air in quantities sufficient to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures. Electrical equipment installed in such classified locations should be specially designed or ‘explosion protected’ and tested to ensure it does not initiate an explosion.

So what are the most frequently asked questions about explosion protection? We have the top 5 below.

Can terminals be retrofitted by the customer on Ex e terminal boxes?

Yes. However, when retrofitting the terminals, you must comply with the manufacturer’s operating instructions. This means that you may only use terminals that the manufacturer has included in their certificate, Furthermore, you may only retrofit a certain number of terminals.

The maximum number is also specified in the operating instructions.

Can drilled holes and screw connections be retrofitted by the customer on Ex e terminal boxes?

This is permitted – after consulting the manufacturer.

The manufacturer’s operating instructions specify the requirements – i.e. how many drilled holes to create on which sides and of what size, as well as the gaps between them, in order to guarantee stability. However, any retrofitting work performed is the customer’s own responsibility and must be tested by them.

Is it possible to use Ex d cable glands and Ex d stopping plugs in Ex e enclosures?

Does “Ex” always mean the same thing?

No – the correct “Ex” differs.

Ex d enclosures must be able to withstand an internal explosion.

They must therefore not be fitted with stopping plugs made of plastic.

These components cannot be granted Ex d approval – but they do have Ex e approval, which certifies that the enclosure is leak-tight and impact resistant. Plastic stopping plugs (Ex e) are not tested for pressure resistance. As a result, they will not withstand an internal explosion.

Hermetically sealed screw connections and hermetically sealed stopping plugs can also be fitted in Ex e enclosures. According to applicable standards, these components are approved for use in Ex d enclosures. However, the reverse does not apply.

Do Ex d cable entries need to be sealed using a compound?

Only necessary if the following requirements have not been met: The cable entry must be certified for Ex d; The cable and the electrical lines must comply with the requirements in the standard; The minimum length of the connected cable and electrical lines must be three metres.
