A new study published by a team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience revealed that they have found a way to tweak the Dolly cloning technique (back in 1996). Their efforts have resulted in the birth of two cloned female macaques, named Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua. The technique used in the cloning of Dolly was somatic cell nuclear transfer. It involved replacing the nucleus in a donor egg with a nucleus which is taken from the cell of a different animal. In primates, the process failed at the blastocyst stage of the embryonic development. The team added two new elements to the usual collection of nutrients and growth factors which are typically introduced in the embryos before the surrogate implantation. The new elements, a compound called trichostatin A and messenger RNA helped the DNA directly to grow properly by prodding hundreds of genes necessary for successful embryonic development.

Clean your teeth in 10 seconds

04

Nicknamed the 10-second toothbrush, the Y-Brush is all about efficiency. Instead of moving the small head of a regular toothbrush from tooth-to-tooth, the Y-Brush cleans half your mouth at a time. The Y-Brush’s tray is lined with nylon bristles positioned at 45-degree angles and resembles a small mouthguard. There are four different sized trays to suit both adults and kids. On the front of the brush tray is a small handle with a large trapezoid-shaped motor that vibrates to clean your teeth. There are three different vibration settings. To use it, you add toothpaste, position the Y-Brush in your mouth and turn the motor on. Expect to pay around $175, when it eventually releases.

The third or the innermost layer is created from aramid fiber, a nylon-related synthetic, and doesn’t melt or burn thus imparts extra protection to the user.

China lands a spacecraft on far side of moon China has just succeeded in landing a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. The landing of Chang’e 4 exhibits the nation’s growing abilities, plus paves the way for new moon discoveries that has remained unexplored. The South Pole-Aitken basin, where Chang’e 4 landed, is one of the biggest and oldest impact craters on the moon. It is about 2,400 kilometres in width and runs for 12 kilometres in depth. Soon after landing, the probe sent back its first photo of the moon’s surface and also sent out a small rover that will be roaming the landing area. Chang’e 4 is not only equipped with a rover and cameras but also with a wide array of instruments that will help it to carry out terrain analysis including learning about the mineral composition. It also has fruit flies, yeast, and different kinds of green plants (including potatoes and cotton). l a t i g di water The Internet of Things The buzz of the Internet of Things is finally come to fruition, industrial machines and equipment are connected seamlessly to share a wealth of data. This connectedness is referred to as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and this technology is increasingly becoming embedded in the Water industry. Red Lion, an industrial automation organisation has pathed the way forward incorporating the cloud protocol MQTT to talk to any industrial Ethernet or serially connected PLC’s, variable speed drive, or controller. Traditional industrial equipment connectivity like this then becomes a gateway to the industry 4.0 digitised environment, or otherwise known as Edge to cloud.

ationally, there is 79 utilities and councils (utilities) and 5 bulk water authorities providing urban water services to over 25 million people across Australia, an estimated 75,888 gigalitres of water was extracted from the environment to support the economy. It’s no wonder this important life-sustaining resource is the focus of every kind of innovative technology. Sure, last 20-30-year water filtration technology has made our water quality being one the world’s best. But what water technologies can we expect to see this year?

Intelligent Water Metering from low power radio and electronics are proving to reduce operating costs when compared to manual water authority meter readings. Its success means it is likely to be rolled out through gas and electricity as well. This begs the question over data management and network transmission. The clear benefit yields higher-resolution data points that increase accuracy from one reading per quarter to mapping when and where every litre of water is going. So, on the horizon, don’t be alarmed when your bills outline when you filled the pool or the last time you took an hour-long shower.

Drones and remote surveying The use of drones and remote surveying devices are already making a significant impact in the Water industry, especially in the way waterways and water assets are monitored and managed. The benefit is highly effective in providing accurate location-based repair sites, substantially reducing occupational health and safety concerns related to the risk posed by manual inspections of high-risk or elevated assets. These new systems and remote operations require highly specialised skills to monitor, diagnose, and interpret system data of faults and areas of investigation.

Connected control Water catchments are under pressure for maintaining sustainable water supply due to today’s impact of climate change and rainfall irregularities. Technology is not just about going digital, it’s also changing the way we do stuff to make a significant increase in operational efficiencies. Integrating a natural resource to the environmental variables such as a wastewater treatment facility with outcome optimised predictions has vast potentials. Currently, PLC’s and RTU’s process local control PID loops to precision according to the reaction of demand. Industrial Internet Control Systems from Emerson (formerly GE Automation & Controls) adds a new layer of intelligence revolutionising traditional control. Incorporating Linux Ubuntu on board the Emerson CPL410 PLC provides the smarts to plugin into external environmental data such as climate, rainfall, temperatures, water usage, traffic, population statistics, and the list goes on, to determine the most optimum set of controls values for that given process. The predictive technology can go as far as pre-ordering chemicals based on forecasted demand ensuring there’s no downtime due to human error. To change the timing of running massive 1MW pump operation based on the energy kWh price and seasonal forecasted water demand. The additional layer of intelligence is unlimited in applications, and open for everyday variables to drive processes in water better.

Cloud services Catchment management solutions can benefit from new approaches to manage water supply effectively and accurately. Interacting with cloud data capture and dashboards via tablets and smartphones will present millions of data points to quickly and accurately make informative decisions in water treatment plants and in the field when assessing network issues. As the roll-out of the ‘smart-network’ develops, the Hirschmann EAGLE family was conceived from a series of individual devices for security applications to make the ultimate weapon against security vulnerabilities. The ‘Data Diode’ makes a secure one-way communication to move this information to the Cloud, or off premises data storage that provides a new range of possibilities. The Cloud works on the premises of scalability, thereby data storage is much like an elastic band that follows population water demand, or water facility expansion. It creates a collaborative environment that gives the ability to communicate and share more data easily outside of the traditional methods. Imagine being able to respond to urgent situations conveniently, quickly accessing data from home, on holiday, or via the commute to and from work (providing you have an Internet connection). This off-site or virtual office empowers operators to improve situational awareness for practical decision making outside of the 9-to-5 hours, quickly and easily.

“Technology is just not about going digital, it’s also changing the way we do stuff to make a significant increase in operational efficiences.”

Big data Big Data is just a lot of ones and zeros until it’s processed into usable information through analytics, providing a holistic view that reveals patterns and characteristics of behaviours. With 20,000 industrial organisations around the world that rely on GE Digital’s HMI/SCADA software for plant-wide connectivity, visibility, and control, collect data from pumping stations, water treatment plants, sewage plants, and reservoirs to manage operations remotely. This information is also highly valuable for research and planning. Analysing real-time demand will provide opportunities to increase performance and will aid efficiencies by diagnosing and reducing faults and waste/leakage along the network. The use of Big Data will aid the advanced systems to assist with real-time operations, decision-making, and provide accurate water usage statistics over time to customers. It will also be used to optimise the urban and rural water services, settings, and safety management systems.

Augmented reality Equipped with a pair of HoloLens glasses, operators can view their work environment with a set of superimposed holograms, thus navigating an augmented reality. Each screen provides a holographic representation of the measurements made by different sensors, allowing the wearer to undertake quality control processes with ease. Up to 400 AR markers path the way for the glasses to detect each component regardless of distance, framing or pollution. If any anomaly is detected, the operator can take a photograph or record a video along with an explanation. The state of different components can be catalogued to form a story of the equipment’s life cycle, throw away the technical handbooks as the system stores a repository of images and detects any issues. Another advantage of this solution is the potential for monitoring facilities remotely, by engaging in real time with experts anywhere in the world who can make a diagnosis of the issues or guide the operator through the required steps to solve a critical situation.

Bright future? There’s no doubt digital transformation is complicated, but it only takes a few forward-thinking individuals to break down the problem into a few ones and zeros. Thereby, digital literacy in the water space will be necessary to overcome digital hurdles to gain a decent ROI. These may be short term challenges, long term is it’s set to transform the way water is processed. Aspiring for smart buildings and smart communities, start with smart utilities leading to a bright future.

first impressions

Straight away we can see it has that typical white ABB aesthetic, a plain exterior, but we’re not looking for flash here. The construction of the unit is solid, and the lines are clean. Just like its bigger cousin, the 580 series, the keypad has a cleaner appearance than the older generation when we power it on and the extra directional keys make navigating a much easier task. The separation of the remote/manual controls from the start and stop buttons will make for easier control of the drive state while the prominent help button will hopefully help prevent some of those sticking moments we’ve all run in to when commissioning a drive.

setting up

In the vein of making things easier for the user, on first start up we’re greeted with the set-up assistant. While nothing ground breaking, this does walk us through the common settings such as motor values, time, date and language. If you’re experienced with drives, this will bring the major parameters to the forefront to be set and if you’re new to them it covers the main parameters required to get the unit moving. Once we’re through the initial set-up we’re greeted with a familiar clean display, if densely packed, and from here we can navigate in to the menu. There’s a full parameter list available as per usual so that if you know exactly what you want and where to find it you can dig in, however the first option on the menu is the primary settings list. This is a handy little conglomeration of the most common settings that might need to be adjusted on the drive including, start/stop controls, communications, motor parameters and speed references. With the ease of access to the most common parameters and the setup assistant walking you through it configuring the drive was a simple experience, however some of the help files don’t seem to be included as of yet, so if you’re digging in to the full parameter list don’t be afraid to have the manual handy.

The claim to fame for the ACS480 is being a simple self-contained package for simple jobs. Many of the features that may be optional, environment dependant, extras on the larger, more specialised drives are included out of the box in this. An on-board brake chopper and EMC C2 filter support the on-board electronics, while safe torque off functionality protects from unwanted start-up. The drive also supports on board communication through Modbus RTU over RS485.

Photography and cricket enthusiast Gordan, speaks to us about the growing demands of the water industry. CORRECTION: 7 (sorry Kade!)

Looking through the available parameters list, it has all the expected functionality of the rest of the ACS series with plenty of options to configure the control of the drive. There’s a solid array of options to let you configure your system to your requirements and matching with the selection of IO, both digital and analogue available, allows the level of customisation we’ve come to expect.

final verdict While there’s nothing here that ABB hasn’t done before, the ACS480 presents as a practical option for a build that is limited, whether by funds, space or requirements. It may not be flashy, but it’s a solid unit that will fit in a variety of jobs and can be counted on to fill the role. All in all, the ACS480 isn’t going to shake up the world of drives, but it’s a great way to get modern on a budget.

The dimensions on the drive are noticeably smaller than those of a similarly rated ACS580, meaning that this drive could have a place when every millimetre counts. While not dramatically cheaper than the ACS580, the ACS480 will save you a significant chunk of change if you don’t need anything fancy.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt. Clean hygienic water is a basic right and as a country we use 76,544 gigalitres (GL) of water, with 10,000 GL used for supply and distribution to industry and households, and over 60,000 GL used in non-consumption uses. With increased usage I see a trend in plant augmentation investments, including the modernisation of technology innovations such as drones, remote surveying devices, IOT, Big Data and Network Security to name a few. Do you think technology innovations are changing the way we think and operate? Definitely, we are seeing more Smart Remote monitoring being utilised and GE’s new PREDIX software technologies will start to be implemented more and more in the future. What about products at Control Logic? What do you see popular in NSW for example? I would say anything Hirschmann, they are flying off the shelves. There is also a strong interest in Tosibox & Smart Motor Sensor technology products. How did you get involved in the industrial space? I’ve always had an interest in how things work and operate – especially in manufacturing plants as a child. The way equipment and control systems communicate with each other is fascinating. This interest drove me to obtain my engineering degree which eventually led me to the industrial domain. What is the most exciting part of your role? Connecting with my clients and understanding their thought process. It’s satisfying collaborating on big projects to reach a common goal. Most exciting part of your weekends? Family time, cricket and photography

“It has all the expected functionality of the rest of ACS series with plenty of options to configure..”

Imagine you are on a ride. Your vehicle moves. Props move. Any pieces of a ride that move—like vehicles, doors, wheels, set pieces—are designed by mechanical engineers. Rides can contain thousands of moving parts and they all must be designed to be dependable for years. Other rides may require illusions, such as fog, never-melting ice, projected images etc, and are courtesy of special effects designers. These designs incorporate lots of different technology: mechanics, chemistry, electronics, projection, pneumatics (air), and even cryogenics. Lighting designers are also involved to get the lighting just right, from spotlights to neon to lasers—and everything in between. Audio/video engineers assist with the playing, amplifying, and distributing audio and video, and then there’s ride control engineers for safety to analyse the ride control systems, and look for any failure points in hardware, software, and mechanics. Then you have electrical, control and system engineers for technical, lighting, mechanical and the like. So what are the engineering tricks used to make the magic come alive?

No mechanical media You need hardware that will last decades, not years. No mechanical media, not even a rotating hard drives should be used. Uncompressed video should be stored in a permanent memory, similar to a CompactFlash card used in high-end digital cameras, but with much more storage and much faster.

Synchronisation Another aspect that you might not think about when you’re on a ride is the degree of tight audio and video synchronisation that’s required. Riding on a vehicle you’re often hearing local sound through the headrests, and area sound from the scenery around you as the vehicle moves through it. This requires precise synchronisation between the two, yet they are unconnected, so millisecond synchronisation precision is required between these media sources. But how is this done? Not through Wi-Fi. The vehicle audio obviously can’t be hardwired and it also can’t be broadcast by Wi-Fi, because it wouldn’t be in precise sync. This means that audio has to be stored on the vehicle itself.

About 98% of thoughts you have each day are the same you had yesterday.

KEEPING RIDES SAFE Safety is the top priority for anyone working in the theme park industry. The likelihood of being injured badly enough to require overnight hospitalisation is 1 in 24 million. The chances of being fatally injured is 1 in 750 million.

Block zone systems

This is performed on every element To prevent vehicles from hitting each other, there must always of the control system. It finds failure be at least one empty track space, or “zone,” between points in the system hardware, two vehicles. The smallest possible zone is the length software, and mechanics—anything of the vehicle. This block zone control system can be that would be unsafe if these points used in simple boat rides or bobsled-style rides. Control malfunctioned. This can get quite tricky, mechanisms (like turning off the propulsion system) because creating redundancy is a natural prevent vehicles from moving until the zone ahead is clear. first instinct. However, redundancy does not guarantee safety if the failure of redundant components is not detectable. Failure modes and effects analysis This procedure analyses every monitoring or control point to see the outcome if it fails. It’s conducted before any attraction opens.

The inventor of the Game Boy was originally the janitor at Nintendo. His name was Ganpei Yokoi.

So what happens if a control system breaks down? How is hardware designed to reduce downtime? Theme parks employ extensive maintenance staff whose level of familiarity with technology increases with the complexity of systems. As most systems are interconnected using networks, a high degree of IT familiarity is required. PCs are rarely used in the theme park attractions as they’re simply not reliable enough. Instead, many theme parks use control systems that feature completely custom hardware. By designing all their own circuit boards, firmware, and software (and not using Windows or other commercial operating systems), everything can be engineered for a specific purpose.

ustralian and New Zealand Standard: Electrical Installations “Wiring Rules” (AS/NZS 3000:2018) has now been published, superseding all previous versions: AS/NZS 3000:2007. It’s a complete revision of the 2007 edition to improve the work methods and installation practices, that constitutes the minimum regulatory requirements for a safe electrical installation. Updates now reflect new technologies, equipment and improved installation practices for electrical installers and design engineers across the country.

3

The new wiring rules clarify the normative (mandatory) requirements and informative (suggested best practice) guidance standard, with the first section addressing new definitions to improve clarity in meaning such as ‘Alteration’, ‘Repair’, ‘Alternative Supply’, ‘Arc Fault Detection’ and ‘Electrical Installation’. Changes to final sub circuits (clause 2.6) will affect everyone in the industry, as it is now mandatory for domestic, commercial and industrial installation, that if you install a new final sub circuit, make alterations or repairs to circuits or switchboards; final sub circuits must be protected by an 30mA RCD. Of course, there are exemptions where on RCD’s adversely affecting performance or disconnection by an RCD could cause a danger greater than earth leakage current, or when repairs are exclusively replaced with equivalent items in the same location.

Switchboard installation requirements (clause 2.10) now require a 1.0 m minimum distance from all faces of a closed switchboard for nondomestic and unimpeded space of at least 0.6 m around switchboards with switchgear doors in any position or with switchgear in a fully racked-out position. There is also additional scope on electrical switchboard installations greater than 800Amps and an enhancement on protection requirements for Arc fault protective devices.

Surge protection has also been updated to reflect modern arrangements of Surge Protective Devices (SPD), as a result of too many brands in the industry not performing as their surge diverting claims. Unfortunately, due to these types of devices being sacrificial in operation and quantifying a lightning strike is near impossible, uneducated users are not aware what constitutes inferior SPD’s verses what the minimum protection of SPD is required.

Appendix F from the wiring rules nominates the correct placement of SPD’s to provide adequate protection. That is; Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) to be connected between Active phase and Neutral, for all main and sub switch boards. And where there is no MEN connection, a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) between Neutral and Earth. Note that the use of spark gaps is not mentioned and considered less effective due to the high let through voltage. The use of circuit breakers and fuses to protect SPD’s has been better outlined to coordinate correct protection. The last thing a user expects is the SPD blowing the main services fuse due to incorrect sizing. Primary and Secondary surge protection is vital for a well-protected environment, which can consist of diverters and filters. Further clarification is emphasized for the type of fail-safe alarm used in the SPD operation, again culling the inferior SPD’s from the market place due to their thermal mechanical flag operation that is unreliable and unpredictable. SPD’s with active fail-safe alarm use a proper energized relay to signify AC power is active and give the best reliability due to predictable indication of highly accurate thermal fuses. Thankfully, AS1768 lightning protection standard answers these questions in depth and is on track to be normative by the end of the year.

ENVIRONMENTS H

arsh environments similar to those found in water and wastewater facilities can affect the ability of an electrical enclosure to protect the controls contained within, leading to a multitude of problems. Problems can include dangerous system collapses, production downtime, personal injury, and increased long-term maintenance costs and losses in customers. While many believe it should be easy to make a decision on the best enclosures material for an application, it can easily become overwhelming because all enclosures materials will meet the immediate needs for most applications. However, in the majority of cases, there will be a specific material that is better suited for long-term reliability and overall cost reductions. The most important factor to consider in material selection for protecting electrical components is the environmental characteristics of the application. Environments can be either indoors or outdoors, and depending on location, involves environmental factors such as moisture, ultraviolet radiation,

dust, temperature, and other chemical and physical conditions at the site of permanent installation. An over-specified enclosure will work effectively in a natural environment, but an under-specified enclosure will eventually fail in a hostile environment, causing longterm consequences. Therefore, environmental factors override other considerations in materials selection. Water is the most common corrosive element and is usually present, to some extent, in every enclosure application. Adjacent processing operations or other intermittent activities such as industrial cleaning and the general plant environment may expose an enclosure to a variety of corrosive agents and temperatures.

Each environment is unique and all possible corrosive agents should be identified for the intended enclosure application. Moisture The level of corrosion typically increases with moisture content, especially in the water and wastewater environment. In fact, if there was no moisture, there would be no electrolyte, and hence, no corrosion. Common atmospheric sources of moisture are rain, dew and condensation. Rain can have a beneficial effect because it washes away contaminants from exposed surfaces. If rain collects in pockets or crevices however, it can be very detrimental

| FEATURE

because it supplies a source of continued moisture. When relative humidity exceeds 70 percent, a thin moisture film forms on a metal surface, providing an electrolyte. This dew or condensation can become very corrosive if it is saturated with a contaminant like sea salt or acid compounds from industrial sources. Materials available to protect electrical components in the water: •

• •

It can be made from metallic or nonmetallic material, but must serve its function of protection for the life of the installation. Durability and longevity is key There are two typical types of materials available: Metal and Plastics.

“An over-specified enclosure will work effectively in a natural environment, but an under-specified enclosure will eventually fail in a hostile environment...”

METAL Common metal enclosure choices include carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Carbon steel is the most prominent choice, based on its low initial cost. It is typically galvanised or painted to prolong the service life. Premium metals such as stainless steel and aluminium are used where long life, corrosion resistance and weather ability are critical, such as when one is protecting controls for junction boxes.

PLASTIC Thermoplastics such as polycarbonate, polyester, ABS and PVC-offer a degree of corrosion protection beyond stainless steel in water/wastewater environments. Composite fibreglass is not susceptible to rust or other forms of oxidation. Composite fibreglass enclosures also offer excellent chemical resistance to halogens (Chlorine, Fluorine) found in most water and wastewater facilities. Polycarbonates are a group of thermoplastic polymers. They are easily worked, moulded, and thermoformed. Due to this versatility, polycarbonates are very widely used for enclosure applications.

choose carefully

Material selection is important for any product and has important implications for the performance that should be expected in water and wastewater environments. To make a proper selection, start by identifying environmental requirements of the application, and then narrow down your options to material types that fit the necessary requirements, size and ratings. Evaluate the thermal considerations the material will need to withstand, and the reactions of each material to such conditions. Finally, inspect and consider the initial and long-term costs and value of the materials that exhibit the best properties for the application, and choose the solution that has maximum value.

s safety is becoming a priority for factories, the need for control devices in hazardous situations is becoming more prevalent. One of these control devices is the Enabling device, used for protection of operators in control systems. According to the AS60204.1 standard, an Enabling Control Device is a manually activated control device that when activated allows a machine operation to be initiated by a separate start control and when de-activated, initiates a stop-function and prevents initiation of machine operation. Enabling Control Device should be arranged to minimise the possibility of defeating. An example is ensuring the de-activation of the enabling control device is mandatory, before machine operation can be reinitiated.

be used to control the risks.

The safety foot switch range by Schmersal are mounted on machines and plants as permissive switches in cases where manual operation is not possible. In case of danger when the pedal is actuated beyond the pressure point, then the positive break NC contact is opened and mechanically latched. Reset operation is carried out by means of a push button. During the reset operation, the switch does not move through the switchingon point.

Additionally, the enabling control permits operation of the hazardous elements only in reduced risk conditions. For example, reduced speed/ power/force, step-by-step and limited displacement.

Types of enabling devices There are two types available, in either a two-position or three-position enabling device. The two and three position devices both feature the offfunction in position 1, and the enable function in position 2. The three-position device adds the off-function again in position 3 (when returning from position 3 to 2, the enabling function is not activated).

The enabling function has to prevent any operation of hazardous functions by voluntary or involuntary action on the machine’s sensors.

Where can they be used? The enabling device is used in control modes for setting, teaching and fault finding such as when a guard has to be displaced or removed and/or a protective device has to be disabled. It is also relevant for the purpose of these operations that the machinery or part of it to be put into operation. Since in this case, the protective device is bypassed, another measure is required to protect the operator. A pendant with an enabling device and an emergency stop push button can

WILLIAMS

g n i h c a o c r ney ou

t the beginning of the 2010 season, tennis superstar Serena Williams was at the pinnacle of her sport. She was the topranked female tennis player in the world. However, while dining at a Munich restaurant Serena accidentally stepped on some broken glass, and after her match the next day was forced to the sidelines for the rest of the season. She finished the year ranked number four on the women’s professional tennis circuit.

“When Serena decided to change coaches from her father to Patrick Mouratoglou, she was taking a huge risk.”

After sitting out the first half of 2011 recovering from the foot injury (along with a pulmonary embolism and hematoma), Serena went back to work. While her singles record for the year was 22 wins and just 3 losses, including a fourth-round defeat at Wimbledon and a straightset thrashing in the final round of the US Open, she had to skip both the Australian and French Opens. She ended the year ranked number 12. Surely these results were nothing more than temporary setbacks, yet Serena’s slide continued. In 2012, she lost to 56th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round of the Australian Open. But it was at the French Open, the second Grand Slam event of the season, where everything fell apart completely. Serena lost to 11th ranked Virginie Razzano in the first round, the first time in her entire career that she was defeated in the opening round of a Grand Slam match. The New York Times described the defeat as “an upset that ranked among the most stunning and unexpected in the recent history…” Doubts filled Serena’s head, and they impacted her performance. She was doing everything she had been doing in the past—she trained longer, worked harder, and her preparation was perfect—but what had brought her success in the past was no longer working, and she was no longer winning. Following the first round defeat in Paris, Serena went in search of somewhere to collect her thoughts and unlock the skills that brought her so much success, yet now caused her to struggle.

20

She arrived at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy, where Patrick watched her practice. After observing how she moved around the court, how she hit the ball, how she served and volleyed, he gave Serena his unvarnished feedback. “Every time you hit, you are off balance, which makes you miss a lot,” he told her. “Also, you lose power because [your] body weight doesn’t go through [the shots], and you’re not moving up, so your game is slow.” She was curious about Patrick’s insights and said. “Let’s work on it.” And that’s exactly what they did. They thought big (one more Grand Slam win) and started small, introducing a few tiny tweaks to existing routines—nothing major—such as speeding up Serena’s footwork so that she could set up for shots and hit the ball earlier. As each small step showed signs of progress, the trust between them grew stronger. This gave Serena the confidence she needed to safely move away from the comfort and certainty of her tried-and-trusted methods, and tackle new techniques to win.

The pair trained together every day for the rest of the week, and then Serena returned home to the US to prepare for Wimbledon. Just days before the Wimbledon tournament was set to begin, Serena made the decision to take on the relatively unproven Frenchman as her coach. He would step into the role that her father Richard Williams had filled for both Serena and her sister, Venus, from the first time they held a tennis racquet in their hands. What followed was truly extraordinary. Serena won her next 19 matches. She took Wimbledon and the US Open, a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics (defeating Maria Sharapova in straight sets) and the season-closing WTA Tour Championships.

Serena Williams was back, with a vengeance. When Serena decided to change coaches from her father to Patrick Mouratoglou, she was taking a huge risk. In the world of tennis coaching, which emphasized molding players to a rigid standard set by the coach, Mouratoglou’s methods were seen as too unconventional, even radical. Patrick had learned skills from spending time in his entrepreneurial father’s business, and then adapted and applied them to tennis coaching. He took a holistic approach to coaching, not just the game but the mindset and mentality— what many people highlight now as one of Serena’s greatest strengths.

DEEP PACKET INS

T

o understand Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), it is first important to understand how a traditional firewall works. A firewall is simply a device that monitors and controls traffic flowing in or between networks. It starts by capturing traffic passing through it and comparing that traffic to a predefined set of rules. Any messages that do not match these rules are then discarded. The traditional IT firewall gives the ability to check three primary fields in a message: • The Source IP Address • The Destination IP Address • The Destination Port number Using these rules, you can define what devices are allowed to communicate within your network and by defining a port number you can also define which protocols they are allowed to use.

THE PROBLEM

SCADA/ICS Protocols have no granularity Most Industrial protocols such as Modbus or DNP3 are unsecured and have multiple functions that all use the same port number. If one of these protocols is required within the ICS network, there is no way of blocking write messages while allowing read messages at the same time. You must either allow a protocol or block it completely. So, if you allow data read messages, from an HMI to a PLC, to pass through a traditional firewall you are also allowing programming messages to pass through. This is a serious security issue.

THE SOLUTION

Deep Packet Inspection Deep packet inspection (DPI) can dig deeper into the protocols to understand exactly what it is being used for. A DPI firewall will inspect the content of the packets within the protocol and can apply more comprehensive rules. For example, a Modbus DPI firewall such as the Tofino Security appliance, can determine if the Modbus message is a read or a write message and then drop all write messages. Good DPI firewalls can also “sanity check” traffic for strangely formatted messages or unusual behaviours (such as 10,000 reply messages in response to a single request message). These sorts of abnormal messages can indicate traffic created by a hacker trying to crash a PLC and need to be blocked.

22

Moving beyond traditional Firewalls Providing security by simply blocking or allowing entire classes of protocols between networks is no longer sufficient for modern SCADA / ICS operations. The protocols that our systems depend on are simply too powerful and too insecure. It is time to consider how we can use technologies like DPI to make our systems safer and more reliable.

Why new malware demands DPI technology

DPI is no longer just a nice-to-have capability. Now thanks to the current generation of worms like Stuxnet (2010), BlackEnergy (2015) and Triton (2017), it’s a must-have technology if you want a secure ICS or SCADA system.

Today’s malware designers know that firewalls and intrusion detection systems will spot the use of an unusual protocol instantly. They know that if the protocols on a network are normally HTTP (web browsing), Modbus and MS-SQL (database queries) then the sudden appearance of a

called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) for both infecting new victims and for peerto-peer (P2P) communications between infected machines.

Thus, worm designers work to stay under the radar by hiding their network traffic inside protocols that are already common on the network they are attacking. For example, many worms now hide their outbound communications in what appear to be normal HTTP messages.

RPC is used for so many legitimate purposes in modern control systems, so it is an ideal protocol for SCADA and ICS attacks. If you were an administrator watching network traffic on a Stuxnet infected network, all you would see was a little more RPC traffic than usual, hardly a cause for alarm.

Stuxnet is a particularly good example of thicovert use of otherwise innocent protocols. It made heavy use of a protocol

Fine-grained security

Even if you suspected something was wrong, you would be stuck if all you had was a normal firewall. The simple blocking of all RPC traffic would likely result in a self-induced denial of service for your entire factory. Without tools to inspect the contents of RPC messages and block suspicious traffic (i.e. deep packet inspection), your hands would be tied.

DPI technology is a very powerful tool in the security tool box. It allows the engineer to block the bad stuff, yet avoid needless impact on the control system. Without it, the designers of modern worms clearly have the upper hand. In order to stay ahead of the bad guys, DPI has become a must-have in industrial firewalls. How is this affecting your ICS security plans?

et’s state the obvious… The Maldives is not a cheap destination. While you can usually find a cheap flight from Australia, you’ll also have to factor in the price of transportation from Male International Airport to the island where your hotel is located, which can often be just as much as flying halfway across the world. Plus, rates at those dreamy resorts with overwater bungalows, soft sands and turquoise waters can be jaw-dropping. It’s easy to shell out nearly $5,000 before you’ve even added food, activities and alcohol to the mix. But fear not -- it is possible to lower that cost. Even if you’re not on a strict budget, these tips will help you avoid overspending in a destination that can be as costly as it is beautiful.

Stay in Hulhumale or Hulhule Swapping out your stay on a resort island for a hotel on either Hulhumale or Hulhule Island can save you big bucks. We’re talking thousands. Not only will you find cheaper room rates at hotels within driving distance of the airport, but you’ll also nix the need for the extra seaplane flight or speedboat ride that’s required to reach the resort islands. You’ll still have access to the beach, tours and activities though the experience is less desert-island and more local. Tip: Grabbing a day pass at a nearby resort is a good way to squeeze in that postcard experience without stressing your wallet with a full-time stay.

Go during the off-season Visiting popular destinations in the offseason to save some cash isn’t a big secret, but we find it’s a hack that’s often overlooked when planning trips to oncein-a-lifetime spots like the Maldives. High season across the archipelago usually

24

runs from December to April, and resort rates peak in December and January when many tourists are escaping their winter or taking advantage of holiday time off work. You can save up to 80 percent just by going against the flow, particularly in the hotter months of July and August. Flights can also be dramatically cheaper during the off-season.

Do your homework Not all resorts here are created equal. Just like any other destination, the Maldives has gorgeous luxury resorts as well as mid-range properties that could use a revamp. It doesn’t seem worth it to spend all the money to get there, only to be disappointed with your hotel once you arrive. That said, by doing your homework, you can understand what’s included in the rate and what’s extra, as well as discover the overall condition of the property. This way, you can make a better-informed decision on whether or not it’s worth the extra $50 a night to have access to free snorkeling or tours, free breakfast or all-inclusive meals, or a nicer room.

Skip the overwater bungalow Overwater bungalows are often one of the most expensive room types in the Maldives. These thatch-roofed accommodations are iconic, and an extremely popular pick at most hotels. However, if you’re looking to save money, we recommend skipping it. You’re in the Maldives, so the beachfront rooms also have spectacular views and come with a lower price tag. If an overwater bungalow is a must-have for your trip, consider booking just one night and staying in the regular part of the hotel the rest of the time.

Go all-inclusive This tip has a few exceptions, depending on the property, but we think if you’re going to go, go all in. Since resort islands typically only have one resort per island, that property is likely going to be your go-to source for everything. You’ll want to eat three meals a day, do some activities, and maybe have a few drinks on the beach. These extras can add up quickly, so you can really get a lot of mileage out of your money when you go all-inclusive. There are several resorts that have all meals, drinks, and even some pretty cool activities, like snorkeling, boat tours, or events, that are included in the room rate. If you’re lucky, they might even include that expensive seaplane flight.

Stator is a self-balancing electric bike that claims to be easy to use, whilst looking cool. Those wide wheels aren’t just for show either. Not only do they house and protect a 1,000W motor, but they are also part of the “self-balancing” nature of the scooter. With the battery weight solidly below the wheel axles and a wide contact patch, the scooter is essentially self-righting and doesn’t require a kickstand. The bike can achieve a top speed of 40 km/h and a range of 32 kilometres. The custom designed batteries that power Stator are high-output, efficient cells that can withstand high recharge cycles. Rear wheel regenerative braking is paired with a front-wheel hydraulic disc brake. You can customise too, like adding a seat, utility racks, lights, and a phone charger.

You can now live out all your Mario fantasies with your own Kart. SegwayNinebot, the company that brought you the original personal transporter almost 20 years ago, strikes again with this 21st-century go kart. The Ninebot Go-kart kit doesn’t have a propelling power of its own but utilises the electric-powered Ninebot as it’s propeller. There are three modes for users to select from based on expertise. There is a novice mode (8km/h), normal mode (18km/h), and sport mode (24km/h). The kart can also switch to reverse by stepping on the brake pedals twice plus mechanical handbrake. Unfortunately, its range is only around 15 km, so the fun may be short lived.

The combination of both the Red Lion Data Station and the Red Lion 3G modem is a powerful yet cost-effective solution for realtime operation and notification utilising remote access and web page viewing.

The Red Lion 3G modem creates the facility for a secure direct VPN connection. Authorised users are now able to connect remotely to monitor or modify any Ethernet connected device (including the Allen Bradley PLCs) for real-time plant operation. As a result,

the need to commute between the five water treatment facilities around the country is completely eradicated, saving additional time and costs. Configured via Red Lion’s free Crimson 3 software, the platform is much like a blank canvas whereby tag monitoring, remote web interface, data logging and over 300 protocols are at your finger tips. In addition, the user-friendly software is quick and easy for deploying complex monitoring systems for a wide range of industries. With seamless access to all sites, NSW Crown Holiday Parks Trust has gained greater efficiency and control than ever before. The holiday makers ultimately benefit, with access to fresh clean water 24/7.

TECH-TIP |

I

download to your crimson 3 devicesover ethernet

t can be a pain to locate a device every time you want to make a minor adjustment to the program. This Tech Tip will walk you through setting up your Red Lion devices to accept a download over Ethernet. By default, the Ethernet port found on compatible Red Lion devices is not enabled for downloading. It is possible to enable it on the device for many of the HMI units, however, this is not covered by this Tech Tip. Please note that Crimson support for Enable Ethernet Port for Download requires Crimson 3.0 or higher and is only available to Windows 2000 or above users. Please update your version of Crimson to the latest; available online at www.redlion.net The first step is to launch up the Crimson program and the program file for the device you are attempting to activate. Once that’s up we can open the download tab in the network section of communications as shown below.

By default the selection mode will be in Auto Local Name mode, but we want to change that to either Manual or Auto Ethernet One. Manual will allow us to set an IP address for the device, or Auto Ethernet One will utilise the address set for the first ethernet port of the device in the program. Auto Ethernet One will be the most common option for new projects as you set up the device to recognise downloads on the same port as it interacts with the rest of the network. Manual is more commonly used for devices that already have their ethernet downloads enabled, allowing you to change the devices IP address while still downloading to the current address. If your device does not already have Ethernet downloads enabled, the first download will need to be via USB or RS232. After that has been activated you can continue to download programs via ethernet as necessary. An important note to this is that if the device is older, a firmware update may be required. If you are attempting to do a firmware update over Ethernet then there must be a memory card installed in the device, otherwise, the firmware update will have to be carried out over USB. To download to the device via Ethernet go to Link>Options up the top left and change the communications port to TCP/IP.

Then we just change the IP download from disabled to enabled.

30

Then just go Link>Send and you’ve saved yourself from travelling. Good Luck!
