Scientists create holograms you can see, hear and feel
Control Logic sponsors life-changing journey Control Logic recently sponsored Megan Tildesley on a life-changing 28-day journey through India and the Himalayas during the ‘World Challenge India Expedition’. It’s a once in a life-time opportunity for a selection of young students wanting to build life skills, courage, kindness and adventure. Starting late November, Megan started in Delhi on route to Chamoli to embark on a 4,000m (above-sea-level) hike on the Himalayian mountains. Megan’s group climbed an impressive 3,000m due to bad weather, later spending a week in Jaipur to help the local community renovate a local school. Megan certainly developed an appreciation of cultures and people, ending this amazing adventure at The Taj Mahal.

Race to open the first space hotel The laws that govern space ventures are generally focused on weapons and rockets, not tourist destinations. Companies trying to launch their hotels into orbit, like Orion Span and the Gateway Foundation, are stuck with outdated regulatory frameworks and logistical challenges. If legal matters are sorted, it’s unclear who exactly would benefit from space hotels. While Orion Span insists that its hotel, Aurora Station, will be accessibly priced, you have to consider the huge financial costs of launching people (& cargo) into orbit.
Researchers at the University of Sussex have created animated 3D holograms that can not only be seen from any angle, they can also be touched. The device was created from 512 speakers, positioned above and below a small 3D stage that acts as the image display. The speakers emit silent ultrasound to create small pockets of low air pressure in which the polystyrene ball floats. By manipulating the soundwaves emanating from the speakers, it is possible to rapidly shift the precise 3D position of the low-pressure pockets, and so control the position of the bead. If the bead moves fast enough, it creates what appears to the viewer to be a 3D shape, and it is even possible to change the form of that shape over time to give the impression of a moving 3D object. But all this has to happen extremely quickly. The 3D shape has to be traced out in full in less than 0.1 seconds – any slower and the visual effect is lost. The sense of touch is thanks to the speakers that create an area of higher pressure air that surrounds the bead which feels like you are touching the image, even though it’s just touching air.

Microsoft’s new Xbox Series X game console
Microsoft has showed off its new game console, the Xbox Series X, confirming the machine will go on sale this year. That sets up a clash with Sony’s PlayStation 5 console, scheduled to release at the same time. Microsoft had previously said that the new console would be four times more powerful than the current generation Xbox One X. It’s obvious that Microsoft continue to blur the line between console and PC gaming, with its physical design resembling a PC tower. It can be placed on its side like the current systems, but it appears the standard orientation will be vertical. It does come with a new controller (with a share button) and the ability to play the majority of ALL previous generations of Xbox games – awesome!

Invisibility cloak material
A group of researchers has discovered a way to create a new class of material that bends light to create a fully functional invisibility cloak. The researchers from Northwestern University combined DNA with gold nanoparticles to create a shape-shifting structure. It can shift to the desired point on a colour spectrum using the same process that is used to create computer chips with programmable DNA. The individual particles can be Luring fish to dying coral reefs manipulated to change for any purpose. Coral reefs are an integral part of marine life providing shelter and habitat, supplying and recycling nutrients as Red Lion releases new advanced protocol converter well as enabling a thriving fish population along with other species, for a healthy and diverse ecosystem. However, Red Lion has introduced a new protocol converter, the ‘DA50D’ with modular the rise in average water temperatures due to climate communication. Being modular it is able to connect to any industrial device easily change has resulted in “coral bleaching” events that damage and features an intuitive LED status ring for quick issue diagnoses. The DA50D their health, causing fish to abandon them. Scientists from supports up to 10 simultaneous protocol conversions, using popular free Crimson Australia and the UK are now trying to reverse this by blasting software with out-of-box OPC UA client and server capability, plus simple point-andsound through underwater speakers near dying coral reefs on click configuration of MQTT connectors. Real-time data logging is also possible. the Great Barrier Reef to make them sound healthy again.
New training course options
The world’s largest 3D printed boat
Control Logic have added brand new courses to their 2020 training schedule with the introduction of HMI training utilising Red Lion’s Crimson 3.1 software and the addition of a practical workshop around Industrial IoT. For a limited time, attendees will receive a free Red Lion CR3000 4” HMI with the HMI course, and a free 4G Teleorigin modem and access to 3 months of hosted VPN through SmartVPN when enrolling into the workshop. Other courses include Machine Safety training, Industrial Communication training, and PLC training courses in either Emerson or Panasonic branded hardware and software.
A team of researchers from the University of Maine revealed the largest 3D printed part in the world. It is a boat, the 3Dirigo, designed on a large-format polymer 3D printer developed by the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. The piece is 7.62 metres long and weighs 2.2 tonnes! The project teams were awarded 3 World Records: the largest 3D printed solid part, the largest 3D printed boat and finally the largest 3D printer. According to a UMaine press release, 3Dirigo isn’t even the biggest object the school’s 3D printer can construct — if pushed to its limits, it can print objects up to 30 metres long, 6.5 metres wide, and 3 metres high. The school already has several applications for the printer lined up, too, including a partnership with the U.S. Army.
Cows fitted with VR to boost milk A recent experiment by Russian farmers in Moscow fitted their cows with altered VR headsets in the hopes of improving the overall “emotional mood” of their herd. The farmers teamed up with VR developers and vets to simulate a believable (for cows) virtual summer field environment for the cows in question to enjoy. The results were promising: the cows’ behavior certainly seemed to improve, and experts noticed “reduced anxiety” among the animals. Next, the farmers taking part in this experiment hope to test whether or not the VR headsets, and the resulting mood difference will lead to better milk production among their cattle.
This company is selling robotic clones of people A Russian startup by the name of Promobot is currently selling autonomous robot clones of real persons. In fact, this is their key selling point of the robot known as Robo-C. The website says, ‘Order a robot with the appearance of any person to your office or home.’ As per a press statement that was released by Promobot, the android Robo-C is ‘a completely anthropomorphic machine. It copies human facial expressions: can move its eyes, eyebrows, lips, and other “muscles,” and also keep the conversation going and answer questions.’ Robo-C comes with more than 600 facial expressions and life-like artificial skin. The company claims to be a manufacturer of service robots and believes that its androids will soon be able to replace human workers. However, it is also offering services to personal use, including cases of a personal assistant.

Companies are only as strong as its weakest link, and unfortunately it extends to employee practices and their integrity. The ACSC reported industry approach to cybersecurity in the workforce screening presents vulnerabilities. Given that grey hat ‘insiders’ account for around 60 percent of all cyber-attacks. The organisations require industry standardisation to support grid cyber security framework that will include workforce screening, fraud and corruption control, physical protective security treatment for buildings and workforce data quality.
One of the most common attack vectors in the power sector is phishing, or attacks launched via email asking users to click on a link that then injects malware into their systems, or via email asking for personal data to enable unauthorised network access. The unsettling but growing trend is cyber attackers increasingly targeting industrial control systems (ICS), sometimes potentially laying the groundwork to do physical damage to the grid.
..Technology Previously, attackers primarily targeted utilities information technology (IT) systems to steal data or launch ransomware for financial gain. The threat is now becoming even more insidious, with hackers tied to nationstates and organised crime trying to burrow their way into the operational technology (OT) space of utility ICS. The problem is electricity grids are being transformed into smart grids, increasingly controlled and monitored by networked industrial control systems with the number of networked devices expected to grow. Especially with increased deployment of Ethernet-based technologies at the sensors and metering device level, notably increasingly based on IEC 61850 released in 2004. The new vulnerability for 2020 is the spread of the ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT) enabled by the roll-out of 5G wireless communication networks.

rity ICS Cyber secu
approach
With cyber-criminals seeking to learn how systems operate and positioning themselves to control critical physical assets, such as power plants, substations, transmission, and distribution networks. Manipulations of ICS can not only lead to disruption of energy supply, but also to physical damage of equipment and industrial accidents. One aspect that is typically overseen is the connection configuration of the data highway, aka network switches. Separating the OT and IT network is non-negotiable to be operationally safe, but cyber security starts at the hardware layer of using managed switches and routers that offer Firewalls, Filters, Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), Access Control Lists (ACL), Radius authentication and certificate control. Furthermore, utilising secure methods of connecting between hardware such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN) such as SmartVPN offer authentication and encrypted traffic that eliminate eaves dropping.
PLC security The advancement of PLCs in in the last 10 years has improved dramatically, but the network security aspects have not. This means it’s extremely easy to kill devices, kill their I/O routines, wipe out their programming, and do horrendous things to these devices based on sending slightly malformed network packets. Manufacturer’s such as Emerson’s RX3i is one PLC family that has achieved the highest Achilles Communications Level 2 Certification and has been independently verified to meet rigorous industry-recognised standards for reliability and communications robustness. Some of these barriers include encrypted passwords, signed firmware updates to ensure the authenticity of the source package and denial of service to prevent “man-in-the-middle attacks”.
HMI Security Computer-based HMIs used to control industrial equipment are highly exposed to ransomware that can paralyse the control ability leading to unsafe conditions or even industrial accidents. Using specialised HMIs that do not use publicly available operating system (OS) (such as Red Lion), offer a good defence mechanism through privately protected operating systems.

Zone level secu
The industrial landscape for control systems protocols is relative unguarded and provides little resistance to a cybercriminal focus. Tofino devices from Hirschmann have enabled Zone Level Security™ which adds a layer of threat detection and prevention capabilities for DCS, SCADA, PLCs and RTUs. The problem with firewalls is they only observe the destination, source and port details in the packet. Whereas cybercriminals intercepting and spoofing fake Modbus, Ethernet I/P, OPC, DNP3 and IEC 61850 packets can be blocked using such a device that employs deep packet inspection for industrial networks, effectively arresting abnormal address requests within the protocol.
Software There are alternatives through the use of passive software scanning and detection, such as Tripwire Industrial Visibility in the OT environment without disrupting operations, employing machine learning to establish a secure baseline of normal behaviour. Anything beyond this normal behaviour is blocked and alerted to operations. As much of cyber security is about threat detection and blocking intrusions, it’s also about the availability of backup systems that can restore the business operations to last known working state. Software change management platforms such as Autosave from MDT have a key role in restoring hijacked assets back to the operator.

Potentially intercepting catastrophic consequences such as the case for the Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility where the Stuxnet multi-part worm travelled on USB sticks to spread through Microsoft windows computers until it found signs of Siemens Step 7 software. Once found, the malware began sending damage-inducing instructions to the PLC. At the same time, the virus sent false feedback to the main controller making itself fly under the radar while destroying numerous enrichment centrifuges. It generated a flurry of media attention after it was discovered in 2010 because it was the first known virus to be capable of crippling PLCs and not a typical PC operating system.

With adversaries from ex-employees, cybercriminals, industrial spies, state-sponsored hackers, and intelligence agencies. It’s safe to say that no person or industry is safe, with cybercrime skillset and sophistication continually increasing. Good IT security practices are always useful in preventing malware attacks for the most part, while an awareness by employees and better employment screening methods offer some comfort. The real secret is adding multiple layers in the control system to further secure and intercept malware to defend the plant, network and systems from every angle.

ost industrial displays are designed for a specific function and often sacrifice either quality of the screen or performance. The futuristic Emerson RXi range introduces a new range of displays that hope to provide the flexibility and performance required without compromising on quality or modern features. In this test we have the 24” screen, a computing module and one A/V module.
first impressions Taking the display out of the box, it looks like something you would find in a modern office with a minimal black bezel surrounding a 24” screen. The unit we have has the computing module already installed so we will test this first. The display itself has several mounting points on the rear which look to be plenty for the size and weight of the screen, and mounting clamps are included in the package. All the ports are on the bottom of the module for easy access once the unit is mounted.

There are plenty of connectivity options, including 2 Ethernet ports, Serial and 4 x USB. After connecting the keyboard and mouse (and Ethernet), it’s time to power on the screen. This multi-touch capacitve screen is defintely a wow factor when switched on, and looks and feels of quality with crisp images (1920x1080 resolution) and a quick boot procedure. The panel PC runs Windows 10 IOT, which removes some unneccesary features to provide increased speed and reliability. If you prefer a touch screen instead of a mouse, you have the option of ‘tablet’ mode rather than windows mode. The touchscreen is very responsive and seems to be accurate even before I calibrated it.

Now It’s time to swap to the AV module. After powering off the display, I turn it over and see that the module is held in place by just 2 screws. After removing these screws, the computing panel on the back slides off easily. I replace it with the A/V module which slides back in just as easily as it came out. I replace the two screws and now my panel PC has just become an Industrial display that I can hook up to a device via HDMI or display port. It also has a display port-out to daisy-chain multiple monitors. Handy!

main features The most exciting feature of the RXi industrial displays is that they are fully modular. It is as simple as selecting what screen size you want and what level of functionality is required. Screen sizes come in 7”, 10”, 12”, 15”, 19”, and 24”, including sunlight readable variations for 15” and below. There are 3 types of modules that can be installed. Panel PC for a full industrial PC, an Industrial monitor to provide a high-quality functional display to connect to any device, and finally the web HMI panel which fits nicely in between providing easy access to web hosted HMI applications via a lightweight Linux OS. The ability to upgrade your screen size due to a change in application or the ability to upgrade your module to provide more functionality has the potential to save lots of time and money.

this is industrial Of course, this is an Industrial display, so as well as looking good, it must function in an industrial environment also. All models have a temperature rating of -20˚C to +60˚C, along with strong environmental ratings and certifications for marine and hazardous environments. The panel has no fans and is rated to IP66 when installed, suitable for almost any industrial environment. The unit we tested was the range topping 128GB SSD unit with 8GB RAM, which performed strongly, however lesser specced models would also be very capable machines. Lastly the Windows 10 IOT long term service build means no unwanted updates to provide that extra level of reliability in a mission critical environment.

We speak with Frank Moro, water & energy expert (and keen gardener) about the future of our power industry. With coal such a driving force in the power industry today in Australia and especially in VIC, do you think this will change over the next 10-20 years? It will need to change eventually, but it may some time yet. Coal being such a powerful political hotcake may influence decisions either way depending on which political party is in power at the time. Also the challenge to replace base load power with renewable will be a challenge for some time to come. Innovation is expensive as we all know, but in the long run leads to greater efficiency – With efficiency such a hot topic, what are your thoughts on some of the energy efficient technology coming into Australia?

Obviously any product which will lead to energy savings and improvements on efficiency are slow on the uptake, however two items which stand out in energy savings are the ABB SynRm drive and motor package which offers substantial energy saving, coupled with the ABB Smart Sensor which offers substantial efficiency gains by providing preventative maintenance features. Based on your experience, is innovation a key factor when your clients consider a product? In my experience innovation is always expected, but also ease of use, availability and technical and warranty support. In most cases price is secondary. What about yourself? What are you wanting out of your career and life out of work? What makes you happy? I personally strive for success in achieving a set goal whether it’s work or non work related. I really enjoy providing customers with innovative solutions which helps the Australian industry being a trend setter and ahead of global competition.
final verdict This is truly a futuristic modular solution, Emerson have created a family of Industrial displays that meet the needs of a large range of applications without sacrificing performance, quality or features. The ability to seamlessly swap modules or screens as an application requires provides an easy way to upgrade your system or reduce the cost when replacements are required. I look forward to seeing what applications our customer will find for this exciting new product range.
Ok some quick questions... tell me two things we wouldn’t know about you? My garden is my zen place, I love gardening, and I also own an original 1984 Peugeot P6 racer - a bike I bought new - which I plan to restore one day. Is there something you really really want? More time to travel the world. Time is the most precious thing. So true! Thanks for your time Frank.

Renewable energy is our future, however many people don’t realise that solar and wind have only made a tiny dent in the energy mix thus far. While more and more people start to adopt green technologies as the costs slowly start to decrease, there is still a mountain to climb if we want to truly get off of fossil fuels on a large scale. We have listed ten of the most promising alternative energy sources of the future. Some of these may be long shots, but some may also play a crucial role in the energy mix of the future.
Space-based solar Most solar energy doesn’t make it into the Earth’s atmosphere, so spacebased solar power makes a lot of sense. The challenges are the cost in getting a satellite to orbit, as well as the conversion of electricity into microwaves that can be beamed down to the planet’s surface.
There’s over 7 billion people walking around the Earth each day, so why not generate power from the movement of people? Experts believe that we can harness this energy, and use it to power our devices.
Fusion power Fusion has been the dream for some time – but scientists are making baby steps to achieving the power process that is harnessed in nature by our own sun. The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is currently being built in France, and it’s one of the most complex scientific and engineering projects in existence.

Hydrogen power Hydrogen is a clean and potent source of energy, and best of all – it accounts for 74% of the mass of the entire universe. The only problem is that hydrogen atoms tend to only be found in combinations with oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen atoms. Removing this bond takes energy, which ends up being counter-productive. As a result, many people around the world are working on making these processes more economic.

Magma power The centre of the Earth is very hot, so why not try and get closer to it to tap into some geothermal heat? People in Iceland are already doing this with red-hot magma after accidentally striking a pocket of it during a 2008 drilling project.
Winds are much more powerful and strong at higher elevations. If wind farms could be autonomous and flying, they could go to where the winds are strongest and deliver double the energy of similarly sized towermounted turbines.
Tidal power Five countries are starting to operate viable wave power farm operations, but the potential is far higher: the U.S. coastline alone has a wave energy potential of about 252 billion KWh per year.
Sharks can live for five centuries.
Space smells like seared steak according to former astronauts.

How to combat harmonics
energy
The traditional approach to tackle problems created by harmonics is to add filters, multipulse transformers or over-dimensioning equipment. Preventing the development of harmonics is a far better strategy than treating the “symptoms” when the negative effects have already occurred. This can be achieved by using a drive, like ABB’s Ultra Low Harmonic range, designed from the start with built-in harmonic avoidance systems. By equipping the drives with specific features and capabilities, the problems caused by harmonics are avoided in the first place. This helps save customers a lot of time and money by ensuring trouble-free operation and a long lifetime for their equipment.
T
he use of VSDs with motors that operate pumps and blowers offer major benefits for a water plant, including enhanced energy efficiency, process visibility of operations, better speed and torque control. Unfortunately, VSD’s do have side effects that introduce harmonics into the electrical network due to the high switching circuitry.
Harmonics can damage sensitive electronic equipment, trip circuit breakers, blow fuses and cause capacitor failures. They can also interfere with communication systems and cause false readings on measurement devices. In the worst cases, harmonics cause costly process interruptions.
| FEATURE
There are also many areas where harmonics can cause inefficiencies, depending on your electrical power system. For example, unmanaged harmonics can cause a 10°C higher operating temperatures to maintain output. Ultimately this can reduce the life of a motor by 50%.
2
3
Higher temperatures cost money For every percent of harmonic voltage distortion involving motors, an equal 1% of efficiency is lost each time. The rise in temperature dramatically reduces the lifespan as a result. Large HVAC systems with a 370 or higher Kilowatt fan or pump load running at 5% voltage distortion instead of 1%, can cost upwards of $15,000 per year at 10 cents per kWh. This is in addition to the reduced lifespan of equipment caused by the heating effects of the harmonic currents.
4
5
Harmonic drives Ultra-low harmonic drives achieve a unity power factor. This high power factor indicates that the electrical energy is used to its full potential. The drive offers a possibility for network power factor correction in order to compensate for low power factors of equipment connected to the same network. It reduces the need for additional power factor correction equipment, such as filters and large capacitor banks. It can also help to avoid penalty charges set by electrical utilities for poor power factors. As harmonic currents are reduced, equipment wastes less energy and energy efficiency is considerably improved. ABB’s ACQ580 range of variable speed drives (VSDs), developed specifically for pumping applications in the water and wastewater industry, now includes an ultra-low harmonic (ULH) version. This new drive ensures reliable operation even in unstable power supply conditions by keeping the network clean from troublesome harmonics.

In order to be feasible, we need to know what the saving amounts to in dollars, both upfront and in running costs. Applying for STC’s is not meanstested, instead four simple criteria are set out by Government Clean Energy Regulators and multiple systems can be purchased by the same person;
W
ith nearly a decade of rooftop solar installations, it’s not hard to believe that small-scale solar systems below 100kW is responsible for 19.6 percent of Australia’s clean energy generation in 2018 and produced 5.2 percent of the country’s total electricity. Today Australia ranks among the world’s top ten solar countries by capacity and ranks second on a watts per capita basis to Germany (459 watts vs 548 watts). The main driver for rooftop solar is mostly due to government subsidies from an administered scheme called ‘Small-scale Renewable Energy’. This scheme has extended beyond the roof and into orchards, vineyards, plantations and livestock farming to assist growers to reduce the cost of transferring water from lakes and dams to fertilise the land. Roof top installations are continuing to increase, and manufacturers such as ABB have invested a lot of time and money into pumping variable speed drives for the approval of the accreditation process of the Clean Energy Council. This approval means STC’s can be claimed for any application that utilise PV arrays to drive AC induction motors from the ACM1 range of ABB’s solar VSD’s.
SOLAR VSD ACSM1 Solar Series ABB solar pump drives are environmentally friendly, and operate independently from the grid that emit no pollution or noise. Feature rich solar-specific and pump control functions, such as built-in maximum power point tracking and dry run detection. Typical applications are irrigation, community water supply, fish farming and agriculture.
• Solar panels and inverters are approved for use in Australia by the Clean Energy Council.
• Not replacing existing panels in an existing system. At the time of writing, there is roughly $603 worth of savings per kW of power generated for pumping applications. This is a highly attractive financial incentive to consider solar-powered pumping as the VSD, solar panels and installation have the capital cost offset by the STC’s. More to the point, there is no ongoing cost when the pumping system is totally reliant on solar power.

What about at night? The benefit of using VSD’s over conventional means is the inbuilt efficient maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, the VSD’s maximise the power available from PV arrays and allow pumping to start once the power reaches a minimum of 40%. If you need to run the pump during the night, well that’s ok too because the VSD also allows for back-up supply via 415VAC mains or generator. Moreover, where electricity is very erratic and unpredictable, farmers do not need to depend on grid electricity for their agricultural requirements.
“At the time of writing, there is roughly $603 worth of savings per kW of power generated for pumping applications.” applications.”

VSD pump features The VSD includes pump-specific protection and features with sensorless flow calculation, dry run detection ability and automatic pump-cleaning sequences that can be configured to suit any application. With the option of Fieldbus communication modules, the user will be able to remotely monitor their system as well through various field buses such as Modbus, Profinet and Ethernet I/P.
For example, a 7 horsepower pump installation consisting of nineteen 370W solar panels and a 5.5kW ACSM1 solar drive, a 35% saving can be obtained on the capital cost from the government financial solar incentives. However, be quick... The Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor recently confirmed the scheme will be phased out over the next 10 years. Decreasing the number of STCs awarded per KW of installed renewable energy, each year until the scheme ceases issuing STCs altogether by 2030. For example, in 2020 a 5.5 kW solar panel system installed in Queensland attracts 83 STCs. However, four years from now that figure will be 53; eight years from now, 22. By 2031, the number will be zero.
Each STC has a dollar value set by the market, which varies due to supply and demand. Going back to our 5.5kw system, at the time of writing, one STC is $37.70, which can be as high as $40. If we multiply $37.70 by 83, we get $3,129. This is deducted from the upfront cost of installation. This amount decreases to $1,998 with 53 STCs.
Final thoughts
The data alone suggests there is a higher initial cost to include PV panels by 70%. However when you consider there is a 35% offset Government incentive currently and a nil running cost when pumping during the day, the installation of solar-powered pumps will actually cost less now, and into the future.

or by monitoring the back EMF (Electro Magnetic Force) from the motor. Once a safe state or “zero speed” is confirmed by revolution frequency or low millivolt back EMF, the open signal can be triggered to unlock the gate and allow operator entry. Once the operator is finished tasks inside the zone, they would exit the zone and press a reset button to re-lock the gate. The reset button should be placed in a location that allows the operator to ensure that no other person is inside the hazardous area before pressing the reset button.
The use of a solenoid interlock allows the safety system to ensure safe feedback is received before allowing the access to the hazardous area. Before unlocking the gate, it may be required to confirm that a rotating part has come to a complete stop, also known as ‘Standstill’. The monitoring for standstill condition can be achieved by a variety of methods. Two common methods are using a proximity sensor to detect movement in a rotating part
Schmersal make products that use both frequency and back EMF monitoring to confirm standstill, including a range of monitoring relays, solenoid locks and accessories to facilitate the locking, unlocking and monitoring of guard status.

rtificial intelligence has already outwitted the world’s top Jeopardy players and chess masters, and now developers are attempting to pit robots against humans in sports. Two modern leagues, The Drone Racing League, which uses first-person-view drones to zoom around indoor obstacle courses, and Roborace, the world’s first racing series for humans and artificial intelligence chairmaned by Formula E driver Lucas Di Grassi, are investing in technologies that could see AI drones and cars compete with (and eventually beat) humans.
Technology advancements
Sports re-invented A few months ago, The Drone Racing League released its firstever autonomous racing drone as part of its inaugural Artificial Intelligence Robotic Racing (AIRR) Circuit, a first-of-its-kind series. Meanwhile Roborace was created to accelerate the development of autonomous software by pushing technology to its limits in a range of controlled environments, and has been testing its AI against Di Grassi’s lap times every two months for the past two years. In both cases, the robot has yet to beat a human, but Di Grassi says the difference between his and the AI’s time has decreased to 3.65% (compared to nearly 20% two years ago). Why does all this matter? The DRL is hopeful that its advancements in autonomous drones will benefit industries beyond sports. Faster, more capable AI drones could be used in emergency response or search and rescue missions. “This will mark an initial step towards a future when autonomous systems can relieve humans from performing often-dangerous disasterrelief efforts,” says DRL founder and chief executive Nicholas Horbaczewski.
20
Meanwhile, Roborace wants to do for autonomous vehicle technology what Formula E has done for electric vehicles: create a space for major automakers to push the boundaries of car technology. The company’s autonomous car, dubbed Robocar, set a Guinness World Record this summer for the fastest self-driving car at 282 km/h. But it’s not only investing in speed; Roborace is also looking to build a level of critical thinking that might one day help autonomous emergency vehicles whip in and out of traffic to get patients to medical centres. “If you think about, say, an emergency response vehicle, the level of decision making required is a lot higher,” says Bryn Balcombe, Roborace’s chief strategy officer. “That’s the type of challenge we’re looking to create now—something that pushes the AI, the sensing, the perception, the prediction of other people’s motion, and doing all of that through a complex traffic scene.”
The RacerAI drone was designed to perceive the world with sensors, cameras and machine learning. Because of the customised level of design, it has inherent advantages over humans. For example, people must look to the left or to the right in order to see

Is it a sport? There is, of course, the lingering question of whether racing robots, backed by a team of human engineers and developers, should be considered a sport?
“...in a few years an autonomous car will be quicker than any driver in the world...” different fields of vision within a full 180-degree view, whereas the RacerAI’s hemispherical cameras see the entire scope. “With robotics, we’re doing the same thing right now that took humans hundreds of thousands of years to evolve: how big should its brain be, how fast should its body move, where should its set of eyes be?” says DRL chief technology officer Ryan Gury. “We created a huge set of tools so participants can compete and push the needle forward to create something that can defeat a human.
“Some purists say sport is all about the human endeavour, about humans doing something miraculous, and that anything that helps the human is kind of cheating,” says Balcombe, Roborace’s chief strategy officer. “Now, for an everyday driver on the road, those things that count as cheating actually help keep you safer on the road. They can turn a mediocre driver into a better driver because you can control the vehicle at a much higher level … If you then make it more about the decision making, make the tactical and strategy levels harder, that’s really where you can start to have a different format of motorsport, and that’s what we’re looking at for Roborace.”
“It opens up a lot from a sports and entertainment perceptive. Ultimately, you’re taking the best programmers in the world Likewise, Robocar has attributes that perform and letting [AI] compete with this amazing better than a human, such as reaction technology,” says Horbaczewski, CEO of The time. “I have no doubt whatsoever that in DRL. “One of the most exciting things to me a few years an autonomous car will be is this unconquered challenge of AI beating quicker than any driver in the world in any a human in sport. When artificial intelligence condition,” says Di Grassi. “The computer beat humans in board games, it changed is already much faster than humans in people’s perception of what AI could do and many areas: it’s 100-times faster than a had people questioning what it could do next. human’s reflexes.” However, Di Grassi When, eventually, an autonomous drone can says, a human still excels in other, more beat a human on a racecourse, you’re going to complex tasks. For example, do you have that same mind-opening moment of, ‘OK, overtake or not overtake at a certain what else is possible now?’”. point in the race?

Modern Substation design Today’s substations are divided into three different levels. STATION LEVEL The Station Level is where you’ll find SCADA servers and HMI workstations. This is also the level where human operators monitor the status of the substation within a shielded control room, and where the Telecommunications equipment to communicate with neighbour substations and the dispatching centre are installed. BAY LEVEL The Bay Level consists of devices known as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). IEDs are smart devices that receive data from sensors and power equipment, as well as issue control commands throughout the substation. They collect information from the Station Level and the measurements provided by the Process Level. The IEDs can also make local control decisions, transmit the data to other IEDs, or send the data to the substation SCADA system for further processing and monitoring. PROCESS LEVEL The Process Level is made up of devices such as circuit breakers and data acquisition equipment (CTs/VTs) that’s used to measure the current, voltage, and other parameters that are monitored in all different parts of the substation.
Advancements Substation communication networks play a critical role in the realtime, mission-critical operations of substations. While substations previously relied on analogue and one-way communication, modern substations can transmit data back and forth across a single layer and vertically between layers. This advancement was meant to decongest the substation network by giving time-sensitive measurement data sent from the Process Level to the Merging Units (MUs) at the Bay Level and to the protection and control IEDs in the Station Bus Level. This vertical communication is connected via high speed and bandwidth guaranteed Ethernet network. The Process Bus network handles time-sensitive data measurements between the Process Level devices and the Bay Level devices (this is what most of the substation’s protection and control functions rely on), while the Station Bus Network hosts the protection and control IEDs and handles communication between bays and outside the substation.

Preventing data loss
Benefits of real-time communication
So now that we’ve isolated the time-sensitive data being transferred within a substation network, how can we prevent data loss while guaranteeing the delivery time of packets under any circumstance? One way is by introducing redundancy measures. IEC 61850 offers several previously standardized redundancy solutions to pre¬vent the loss of data, including the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and High Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR). After all, increasing network availability will facilitate bandwidth availability for packet transfer.
Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and the new standards it brings with it offer many benefits to automation networks, including guaranteed, specific timing for missioncritical and time-sensitive applications. While some parts of TSN are still currently being developed by the IEEE, the technologies currently available to us offer up an entirely new level of determinism in data transfer. The goal is for current and future Ethernet networks to provide substations with:
But, while implementing network redundancy protocols is vital for improving and supporting network recovery time, they’re not enough to guarantee the on-time delivery of data. Even in IEC 61850 networks, single events and data transfers within a substation can greatly increase the amount of network traffic. When we take into consideration the large number of simultaneous communications within a substation, the availability of bandwidth becomes critical. The problem now is how to guarantee network availability for critical data streams in case of network congestion.
Thankfully, this is the problem that TSN solves…
Real-time networking
Future-proofing
To date, Ethernet hasn’t been able to While the standardization process of TSN meet the growing demands for data technology is expected to take a few more delivery latency and timing. However, years, the technologies central to the TSN the ability to provide guarantees protocol family have been completed – and on data transfer timing is a key have been demonstrated successfully. These requirement for applications, such mechanisms can already be integrated in as the transfer of time-sensitive products and their benefits can be used Sampled Values in Process Bus immediately. Backward compatibility is also communications. This will allow low ensured through the IEEE 802 standardization latency data transfer and elimination process. This means that TSN networks that are of jitter in real-time data transfer. already installed can still be used in the future.
Interoperability
A new standard
TSN has already become one of the key enabling TSN allows for the coexistence technologies for the IIoT and Industry 4.0. By combining of real-time and non-real-time TSN standards for lower layers of communication (Station communication on the same network to support loss-tolerance Bus) and standards for higher protocol layers (Process Bus), the result is an open architecture that can be and bandwidth reservation. These capabilities fundamentally used to fully network even the most complex substation architectures. Products like Hirschmann’s Bobcat managed enhance basic Ethernet switch enables real-time communication using time-sensitive technology. As TSN standards networking (TSN) to provide advanced security and realcontinue to roll out, the result will be a broad interoperability time communication on all of its ports. TSN is becoming the technology that allows for the most seamless data transfer. between vendors.

It’s already a hugely popular tourist trip among “grey nomads” in Australia, but the operator, Great Southern Rail, is now set on attracting a wider range of clientele, with spruced-up carriages and renovated lounges, additional offtrain excursions along the route and a new food and wine menu on board that showcases the best of Australian cuisine.
Both the Platinum and the Gold class cabin tickets are all-inclusive; this means gourmet meals prepared in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant by professional chefs and a complimentary selection of wines, boutique beers, and other beverages. If you choose to travel as a Platinum guest, you will have access to the Platinum Club where you will be served three five-course meals per day.
Watch the world go by Platinum cabin
The Indian Pacific doesn’t have any WiFi and only limited internet access during stops at various settlements along the way. You won’t find reception either, so its kinda a forced technology detox. Not that you’ll mind too much, as it’s also forced relaxation to absorb the ever-changing landscape at a leisurely 85km/h. Once you reach the Nullarbor you will notice that there isn’t a single tree in sight and the dead flat horizon is in every direction. You’ll be mesmerised by the reflection of the train on the terracotta earth, the stubbly low vegetation the colour of dried sage leaves, and the occasional kangaroo, emu or camel startled by the long, silver snake of a train, eagles soaring high above the desert, and sunsets which are dazzling out in the middle of nowhere.

Unique excursions While the Perth to Sydney and Sydney to Perth journeys cover exactly the same track, they pass through settlements and cities at different times, so the Indian Pacific’s excellent off-train excursions differ according to the direction you’re travelling. On the Sydney-bound journey you will stop at the homestead of the largest sheep station in Australia, the 2.5m-acre Rawlinna Station with 70,000 sheep, for a stunning sunrise breakfast. For Perth-bound passengers, you’ll get dinner there under the starry Nullarbor sky.
CLN | ISSUE 17
Along the way you will get to see The Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie-Boulder on the western fringe of the Nullarbor – the site of one of the biggest gold rushes in Australian history and among the richest gold deposits in the world – and the massive 3.6km wide, 512m deep Super Pit gold mine, the world’s largest single open-cut mining operation. Somewhere during the longest stretch of straight train track in the world, where there are no corners for a mind-boggling 478km, you will stop to take on water and fuel at the ghost town of Cook: population four. Once a thriving settlement of 200 residents, Cook’s school, hospital, tennis courts, swimming pool, golf course, shops and houses now all lie eerily empty.

SYDNEY TO PERTH
A four-day, 4,352-kilometre, all-inclusive journey that takes you through the Blue Mountains of New South Wales and across the expanse of the Nullarbor Plain in outback Australia, through cities and vast, empty lands.
PERTH TO SYDNEY
As you leave the Indian Ocean, you will stop in the outback town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Adelaide and end your journey tunnelling through the Blue Mountains to Sydney.
Adelaide is the only major city the Indian Pacific stops at on its journey, and passengers on the Sydney to Perth trip get to take a tour of the region’s world-class boutique wineries and dine at a vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Other pit-stops include Broken Hill, Australia’s oldest mining city, and New South Wales’ magnificent Blue Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can opt to do the Prince Henry Cliff track, a two-hour guided hike from Katoomba to Echo Point, taking in spectacular views of the Katoomba Cascades, Wentworth Falls, sheer cliffs and sandstone escarpments hundreds of metres high, the beautiful forested Jamison Valley and the famous Three Sisters rock formation.

Crusing terra firma Long-haul train travel is akin to cruising, sans water. Like shipboard cruising, you unpack and pack-up only once and your luxurious bedroom, bathroom, restaurant, lounge, bar and means of transport travel with you. There’s no pressure to be up and away early in the morning to board a coach or catch a plane to get to the next destination, eliminating one of the most stressful, tiring aspects of travel. The excursions on the Indian Pacific are entirely optional so you can sleep in, read, day-dream, socialise or relax in your cabin or lounge all day if you so desire. Travelling by train is deliciously stress-free, and the perfect alternative for those who suffer sea-sickness or have a fear of open-ocean cruising. So if feel like something different, gather together your better half or even a group of good friends or family and have a party on rails on board the Indian Pacific. Expect gourmet food and drinks, luxurious accommodation, superb service, fine entertainment, and a complete detox from everyday life.

a PLC A locomotive mobile sand conveyor that can be towed to nearly any location, utilising its own power source
Background An Australian railway operator discovered the fleet of locomotives was not operating efficiently, particularly heavy haul locomotives losing rail traction due to water, oil and debris on the rails resulting in wheel slip during acceleration and wheel slide during braking. Dropping dry traction sand onto the rails in front of the locomotive drive wheels has used been for decades, however loading the sand in time to meet the movement schedules was proving difficult. Tons of traction sand required to be quickly loaded onto the locomotive in many different locations reliably and safely to minimise downtime and costly transport delays.
Project Scope

that “EMTT discovered at he e due to the intens the of the daily sun and m occasional rain stor e th ns at remote locatio to sand pile had proved n be quite difficult whe pe -ty w re utilising a sc conveyor design.”
The Australian railway operator contracted EMTT to supply a “Sandpiper” mobile locomotive sand conveyor to integrate with existing bulk sand storage hoppers and to load locomotives in almost any remote location. EMTT quickly ruled out a pneumatically driven system, opting for the simplicity and gentle handling characteristics of the Olds Elevator driven by a Variable Speed Drive to minimise wear and dust creation. However through the R&D phase, EMTT discovered that due to transporting the sandpiper across rough terrain, sand would compact at the base of the sand elevator. Starting the sand elevator when sand had compacted around its infeed proved difficult.

ABB ACS3 55 Drive
Benefits The ABB ACS355 Variable Speed Drive power supply is delivered from a diesel generator mounted on the trailer together with the patent screw conveyor to make the system completely autonomous. This enables the Sandpiper to be towed directly to the client’s fleet, in any location. Combining a simple mechanical theory and smart electronic variable speed drive technology, EMTT with the help of Control Logic was able to produce a safe, reliable, and low component count conveyor. Used for more than just sand, the Sandpiper is a cost-effective solution that is adaptable to any installation as well as being easy to use, maintain and operate.

overcome challenges of
harmonics
H
by Chris Freebody
armonics in electrical systems can be considered as pollution of the electrical grids and can have negative effects on plant equipment. Harmonic frequencies in the power grid are a frequent cause of power quality problems including increased heating in equipment and conductors, misfiring in variable speed drives, and torque pulsations in motors. The results can be unpredictable legal and financial ramifications.
What are the effects of harmonics? When waveforms deviate from a sinewave shape they contain harmonics. These current harmonics distort the voltage waveform and create distortion in the power system which can cause many problems. A power system can contain one or two different kinds of loads, a non-linear load or a linear load. Ultimately voltage distortions can lead to overheating of equipment, electronic equipment failure, expensive downtime, and maintenance difficulties. Systems like ABB’s HVAC ultra-low harmonic drives are designed with built-in harmonic avoidance systems and meet low harmonic limit recommendations from IEEE519 and G5/5. Often by utilising ultra-low harmonic drives will avoid any problem caused by harmonics in the first place. ABB’s ACH580 ultra-low harmonic drive in particular help keep the current harmonics in undistorted networks below 3% under all load conditions.
Do I have a harmonics issue? Look for symptoms of harmonics listed in the graph below. If one or more of these symptoms occurs with regularity, then further action will need to be taken.
Why do harmonics occur? Harmonics are created by electronic equipment with nonlinear loads drawing in current in abrupt short pulses. The short pulses cause distorted current waveforms, which in turn cause harmonic currents to flow back into other parts of the power system.

Still not sure if you have a harmonics issue? Ask us for a complimentary consultation and advice on potential options. Good Luck!
