Prototype display enables viewers to watch a 3D movie from anywhere 3D movies usually mean 3D glasses, however a team from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science have demonstrated a display that lets audiences watch 3D films at a cinema without them. Dubbed “Cinema 3D,” the prototype uses a special array of lenses and mirrors.

While glasses-free 3D already exists using a series of slits in front of the screen to allow each eye to see a different set of pixels to create depth, you need to be at a particular distance for it to work. For Cinema 3D, the idea here is that people in a cinema move their heads only over a very small range of angles, limited by the width of their seat. This would be enough to display images to a narrow range of angles and replicate that to all seats in the cinema without the loss in resolution. While its not market ready (it requires 50 sets of mirrors and lenses) they are optimistic that future versions could push the technology to your local cinema, and potentially other things like billboards and store fronts.

The Cronzy pen lets you choose from 16-million colours

The Cronzy pen is an artist’s dream come true. It packs an incredible 16 million colours in one package. Simply scan any object (using the pen) to replicate the exact shade. A smartphone app lets you choose any colour or save your favourite colours, and then share them with friends on social media. Apart from paper, the Cronzy pen can draw on various surfaces like canvas or even skin.

The designers are running their campaign on Indiegogo. It comes with two ink cartridges and a charger and will ship early next year for around $290 if pre-ordered.

Samsung to release a folding tablet in 2017 We are all faced with the dilemma for settling for smaller screens so that they fit in our pockets. Part of the reason people prefer iPhones is that it is smaller and sleeker than a Galaxy. To nullify this and introduce a new tech at the same time, Samsung is introducing a foldable tablet that doubles into something resembling a book as early as next year. According to Korean News ETNews, the new product is known as smartlet and will be a 7-inch screen when unfolded. When folded, it becomes only five inches as a whole. The Korean tech giant has spent three years perfecting this new technology and will be mass-producing to cater for the demand in 2017.

Researchers are close to discovering an anti-ageing drug for humans The fountain of youth may be a reality. Joint researchers across Washington University in St. Louis and Keio University in Japan have announced that they’ve discovered a new compound called ‘Nicotinamide Mono Nucleotide’ or NMN for short. It’s shown to reverse diabetes, counter decline metabolism, eyesight and glucose intolerance.

Most importantly it activates proteins called sirtuins, which decreases in production as the human body ages. Mice which were administered NMN aged slower and possessed a longer lifespan than those that didn’t have NMN. It’s now been fast tracked to become the first anti-ageing drug to be tested on humans. Until then, feel free to embrace the silver fox.

While most types of electrical injury have been significantly reduced due to improved technology and safety, incidents relating to arc flash have become one of the leading causes of serious injury or even death among electricity workers.

What causes a ‘flash’?

The main cause of arc flashes is human error and 65% occur when an operator is working on the switchgear. Here are a few examples...

Why get arc flash protection and what are the standards?

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 it is the responsibility of a person conducting a business or undertaking at a workplace to keep their workers safe and prevent a potentially catastrophic event from occurring. If an arc flash accident occurred and the employer had reasonably practicable means of preventing it, the employer may be liable under the act.

In Australia, no specific standard exists for arc flash calculations however IEEE 1584 is used to establish the incident energy and arc flash boundary for electrical equipment installed. For Coal Mines Arc Flash studies have become a requirement of AS3007

Reducing the risk

Active protection will not prevent the accident from happening – but it will significantly reduce the damage caused. There are electronic devices available designed to monitor and limit the arc when it occurs that work by detecting over pressure or the bright light created by the arc.

The first method utilises arc detectors that sense overpressure in the cabinet. As a result of the rapid energy release of the arc, a pressure wave also develops of such considerable magnitude that if contained, may lead to switchboard structural failure or even propel missiles such as panel doors. As a consequence it is possible to install pressure sensors that are able to signal the pressure peak associated with the arc ignition with a delay of about 10 to 15ms.

Such a system does not need any electronic processing device, since it acts directly on the shunt opening release of the supply circuit-breaker. It is essential that the device is set at fixed trip thresholds so that when an internal overpressure is reached, the arc detector intervenes.

ABB Detection technology

Reducing the consequences of arc faults is all about time. This graph illustrates the ABB Arc Guard system (TVOC-2) detection ability in relation to energy and stages of an arc fault. Note the time and thus the energy at the time of the detection and trip is well before enough energy can pass to cause a cable fire.

However, the problem with this method is that it is difficult to define in advance the value of overpressure generated by an arc fault inside a switchboard.

The second method incorporates installing detectors that sense the light flux associated with the electric arc. The arcing control system detects the event and sends a tripping signal to the circuit-breaker with a reaction time of about 1ms.

The damaging effects of an arc fault event can be dramatically reduced by strategically installing detection and anomalous current sensors in conjunction with a suitably sized main circuit breaker.

These combined sensing systems accurately and reliably cut-off power to the fault well inside 35ms.

To further increase protection, the detection system can be distributed through the sub-breakers at each sub-board and tiered back across each of those breakers to give a co-ordinated shunting trip to avoid a cascading arc condition.

Solution installation tips With its modular concept, the Arc Monitor by ABB is designed to fit all types and sizes of low- and medium-voltage switchgears. Here are some tips on what components are required and installation considerations.

Arc Monitor (TVOC-2) The Arc Monitor can be mounted anywhere in the switchgear, such as in the breaker cubicle or in a separate control cabinet. Tripping is handled by a separate tripping circuit. You can connect up to 3 breakers in this way and, if required, trip different breakers depending on where the arc occurs. Energy is stored in the unit for operation up to 0.2 s if the supply voltage fails. This is sufficient to close the tripping circuit even if the voltage disappears at a short-circuit fault.

CSU (Current Sensing Unit)

The CSU is an accessory used if you cannot prevent direct sunlight or other highly intensive light reaching the sensors frequently. CSUs can be mounted in series if more than two are needed.

The CSU measures either 1, 2 or 3-phase. Three-phase is, however, preferable for reasons of safety and reliability. Current transformers with a secondary current of 1, 2 or 5 A are used for this purpose.

Detectors Detector cables are available in 1m to 60m lengths and each detector consists of an optical cable and a lens that are calibrated together to give the same sensitivity independent of cable length. Up to 30 detectors can be connected to each Arc Monitor and they aren’t affected by electrical noise because they are Fibre-optic sensors.

The basic strategy for positioning the sensors is to make sure to cover all parts that may suffer from an arc. Typically this involves the horizontal and vertical bus bar system and the breaker cubicle. If possible, it’s also normally preferable to supervise each cubicle.

The first thing we noticed about this range was how robust and futuristic they look. Made of stainless steel and claiming impressive temperature ratings between -40º and up to 65º Celsius, they are guaranteed not to corrode and suitable for use in zones 1, 2, or 21, 22. The 940s in particular both offer full HD capabilities and capture panoramic ranges and detailed monitoring – at 60fps and offering multiple options for video streams, they are the flagship for these environments. Additionally they are both seawater proof and shock and vibration resistant. Perfect for a James Bond movie scene.

The EC-940 PTZ comes in a slightly larger construction as it features the fastest rotating pan/tilt camera in the world to easily pivot from one destination to the next. It has a 30-optical zoom that can accurately identify the smallest details, and then transmit via Ethernet. Did I mention James Bond already?

The smaller EC-940S-AFZ would be the more popular of the two and captures clear pictures even in low-light conditions utilising the WDR function at a lower price. Around the office you are known as one of our hazardous area experts - how did this come about?

I’ve always had a keen interest in oil & gas since starting in the electrical industry. Over the years I’ve progressively accumulated greater knowledge and exposure to hazardous area products and systems, and the information has stuck.

You’re pretty much a hazard area guru then... So what makes STAHL such a popular brand in this field?

STAHL offers customers a complete solution for hazardous areas. The range is extremely durable and includes everything from lighting & terminal boxes through to complex system solutions involving multiple products and protection techniques.

When talking hazardous area products with your customers do you find a common question keeps coming up in conversation?

Yeah definitely, and usually it’s related to how robust they actually are, whether it will survive the environment they are going in or how long they will last. It’s an important question because generally as hazardous areas are in industrial zones, the products need to be able to take the wear and tear that is thrown at them on a daily basis. Australia has some pretty harsh environments, so we usually want reassurance they will do what they say they will do.

And your daily basis - what’s your favourite thing about your career?

The ability to help a customer out from start to finish is hugely satisfying for me. Knowing that I am able to assist from design all the way to implementation is rewarding, and it’s nice to hear about the end result.

What about when you aren’t working?

You’ll probably find me playing my guitar.

Finally if you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I love spicy food, so Indian would be the way to go.

elf-driving cars are coming. It will be here sooner than you think, but how will we get there?

Two terms for the transition have become standard in the auto industry. There’s the “evolutionary” path to autonomous vehicles, where today’s cars get self-driving features bit by bit (think Telsa’s autopilot feature).

Then there’s the “revolutionary” path.

That’s where totally self-driving cars, like the ones Google is working on, start out as test vehicles and become more mainstream as they can drive in more places.

So a driver should be able to input a destination while driving on a highway, turn on adaptive cruise control and let the car drive itself. When it gets to the appropriate exit, the car will return control to the driver.

Governments will begin working on rules for testing and deployment of fully autonomous vehicles, without a driver, across the country. In the meantime, companies will be gathering data about every single type of situation a self-driving vehicle might encounter. Car makers and tech companies will have to make sure light detection and ranging lidar/radar sensors, as well as cameras and GPS, can work together, while ensuring that each component can function independently if one of them fails.

ith modernisation of plants, facilities and equipment, our expectations are for increased availability and reliability. Much of the control power required for these applications is often sourced via DC power supplies.

Backup plan

When uptime is critical, we need to consider the consequences of a temporary loss or extended failure of either the DC power supply or the AC power that feeds it. Typical terms used when designing redundant power solutions are 1+1, N+1, N+N redundancy.

This simply means that for N quantity of power supplies for normal operation 1 or 2 or N additional (suitably sized) power supplies are available as backup and to ensure continuous operation.

For temporary backup, buffering or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are used. Typically in a redundant system, two or more power supplies are switched in parallel and decoupled by one or more redundancy modules. This module prevents shortcircuiting of the bus voltage if a short circuit occurs in the output side of a power supply.

W

hen discussing the safeguarding of machinery, the usage of fixed guards or movable interlocking guards is not always practical if you don’t have the space for installation or if there’s a reduction in productivity due to increased access time. When this is the case the solution is Sensitive Protective Devices.

What is a sensitive protective device? Some examples include safety light beams, light curtains or mats. Working out the best device to use is decided by performing a risk assessment or ensuring it meets the appropriate machine standards.

These protective devices can only be used when your machinery doesn’t create emission

hazards such as noise, radiation, hazardous substances or hazards due to ejection of parts. In addition, the machine has to be capable of stopping part-way through the cycle.

So what’s the aim of these devices? Basically they are used for tripping and presence sensing. Having the machine come to a complete stop before the operator reaches a dangerous position prevents a serious accident from occurring at all.

So deciding on the location and minimum distance is critical to ensuring correct installation and the safety of all involved.

There are two factors when calculating the minimum distance of the device from the hazardous location. These are: 1. Average human approach speed 2. Stopping time performance of system Stopping time performance of the whole system includes the response time of the Sensitive Protective Device and the time necessary for control system to stop the machinery.

The location is calculated by observing the minimum distance, which would see the device positioned so that a person can’t be present between the device and the hazard zone once the machine is enabled and can start running. For specific guidelines refer to the Australian Standard AS4024.2801 which discusses how different devices vary for minimum distance based on their position and orientation.

LARGE DIGITAL DISPLAY LD Series The ProducTVity Station extends production monitoring to remote personnel by providing email and text alerts, and its built-in webserver allows productivity information to be monitored in real-time via any networked PC or smart-phone.

The ProducTVity Station’s built-in data-logger can record any KPI, as well as alarm events for later review. It can then synchronise the log files with any FTP server and/or Microsoft’s SQL Server for further analysis.

The LD Series from Red Lion offers up to 101mm high LED display that is easily read from a distance of up to 55m.

Various models for count/rate, time, voltage/current/process, load cell and serial slave inputs are available.

Housed in an extremely rugged aluminium case the product provides IP65 protection making these displays perfect for industrial applications.

Large-site traffic utilising the roadway s was a serious factor to take into account. Interrupting this roadway would equate to heavy costs and lost productivity.

Digging trenches for underground cables and existing heig ht restrictions for overhead cables meant that these options were not viable.

There wasn’t a direct line of site betw een the generator and 11kV recloser to ensure a reliable and secu re wireless connection and it was an area that had a large met al building and trucks driving between the two locations as well … very challenging.

Solution With advice from Control Logic, the GE MDS NETio was installed. It’s an integrated, scalable family of wireless solutions that provide long distance unlicensed communications, allowing the client to interface both analog and digital I/O. It also took into account an earlier issue of having no direct line of sight between the two locations. It operated on a 900mhz signal designed for long distances that avoided any interference from standard commercial WiFi equipment.

A robust radio link was secured utilising the inbuilt security manager by restricting all other radio connections, bar the two pre-configured NETio modules.

To ensure this critical monitoring and control radio link is always up, a PULS uninterruptable power supply (DC-UPS) was installed so unplanned brown outs would not be an issue in the future.

The GE MDS NETio allowed for an Ethernet connection to Digital points making it ideal for monitoring and control. This provided easy integration to the existing PLC via Modbus TCP/IP. Basically, the NETio is used as a Modbus TCP/IP remote I/O point via radio link.
