Say hello to Archelis – a wearable chair intended for those who have to stand for several hours at their job. The strap-on chair allows the user to sit while standing. It has been created by Nitto, a Japanese company that works in collaboration with Chiba University’s Centre for Frontier Medical Engineering, Hiroaki Nishimura Design, and Japan Polymer Technology. The product is still under development and is slated for market later this year. If you look at it from a technical perspective, it is not really a chair but rather a leg brace. It can be locked in various positions depending upon user’s requirement and allows the adjustment of your ankle and knee joints while doing so. The gadget works by distributing the pressure over thigh and shin causing a reduction in joint and muscle fatigue. It’s been created using carbon parts only and is flexible and comfortable enough for longer time usage. It works without power or batteries and was originally aimed at helping surgeons perform surgeries that last for longer periods of time.

Scientists conclude that chocolates make you smarter No need to feel too guilty the next time you indulge on chocolate according to recent studies. Georgina Chrichton conducted a study that involved about 1,000 participants and concluded that those who ate chocolate at least once a week were able to exhibit enhanced brain functionality. The tests showed improved critical thinking exercises and participants were able to think better in abstractions. Foods that contain flavanols increase the brain activity and chocolate is one of those foods.

Airbus unveils the world’s first transparent airplane

No doubt there maybe years before this transparent prototype soars the sky, but scientists have said this environment-friendly plane (its structure will be made from plant materials) is light-weight, cost effective and mesmerizingly futuristic. I’m sure alot of thrill-seeking people can hardly wait for the first flight. The walls will offer in-flight entertainment along with changing colours in response to sunlight and body heat of passengers. The membranes will be able to come translucent or transparent on the touch of a button and based upon user’s preference.

Transparent wood developed In news that’s sure to thrill architects and carpenters around the world, researchers at Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology have reportedly developed a new type of wood material that is visibly transparent. That’s right; your windows and solar panels might soon be made of wood. To create this optically transparent wood material (which technically isn’t 100 percent wood) The researchers on the KTH team used a chemical process to remove the wood’s naturally occurring lignin, which is a component of the wood’s cell walls. Removing the lignin creates a sort of bleached white wood color, which the team then makes clearer with a bit of tinkering and nanoscale engineering.

Hong Kong man spends 1.5 years & $50K to build his own female robot A 42-year-old product and graphic designer in Hong Kong has built a female robot resembling a Hollywood actress whom he doesn’t want to name. (It’s Scarlett Johansson.) 70% of the crop-topped humanoid was made using 3D printing technology and responds to a set of verbal commands and makes facial expressions. Ricky Ma built the full-size robot, dubbed “Mark 1,” from scratch on his balcony. “During this process, a lot of people would say things like, “Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it? It’s really hard,” Ma said. Self-taught, he overcame challenges like burnt-out electric motors and inexperience with electromechanics and programming. Who needs a GF.

so that leaves the motor...

Motor efficiencies focus on mitigating heat losses and these losses typically come from the rotor. So it makes sense that reducing those losses saves energy. Currently, there are three main options for improving motor efficiency.

aterials

ctive m

ga Addin

Increasing induction motor efficiency is typically achieved by adding more active (usually copper) materials to the stator windings. Although the motor construction is the same and familiar maintenance processes can be maintained, rotor current losses will still be present, and the resulting heat transferred to the motor casing and bearings. Motor bearing failures are the primary cause of induction motor malfunctions. Additionally, the added copper in the stator may increase the frame size and will increase motor weight.

06

Use permanent magnets The second option is to use permanent magnet motors. Rare earth permanent magnets are designed into the motor’s rotor, eliminating the need for a magnetizing current. Because of this, there is no rotor current and therefore very little heat being transferred to the rest of the motor and bearings. This immediately improves motor energy efficiency however unlike induction motors, permanent magnet motors require the use of a variable speed drive to control the motor. The rare earth magnets create issues with maintenance because Certified service workshops who are capable of working with the strong magnetic forces are required.

something in-between

Synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors are a third option. SynRM motors take advantage of the proven simplicity and reliability of induction motors and the higher efficiency of permanent magnet motors, but without the use of rare earth magnets. It’s the motor’s rotor design that makes this possible. Using the stator of an induction motor, the rotor is replaced with a specially designed rotor that aligns with the stator’s magnetic field. Like permanent magnet motors, SynRM motors also require the use of a variable speed drive to control the motor. The drive calculates the offset angle of the magnetic field, resulting in rotation. Looking at lifetime costs, SynRM motors are maintained the same as induction motors, no certified workshops are needed because there are no rare earth magnets. With no need for a rotor magnetizing current, the rotor runs cooler and that means less heat is transferred to the motor and bearings.

GSK Healthcare products GSK’s high technology facility at Port Fairy in Victoria, AUS, is one of the world’s largest producers of thebaine, codeine and morphine. An ABB SynRM motors and drives package, is driving substantial energy savings at one of the pumping stations. A drop in electricity consumption has been recorded at the pump from 148 to 136 amps. Furthermore, a temperature reduction of 25 percent and a 60 percent reduction in noise have also been achieved at the motor.

Pumping Station for South Staffs Water in the UK The ABB SynRM solution replaced an induction motor-based variable-speed drive package at South Staffs Water in the UK, resulting in a 6% energy saving as well as a 58% reduction in frame temperature. This lowered the bearing temperature which means they could extend the period between greasing, reducing ongoing maintenance costs and potentially eliminating the need for force fan cooling when running at lower operating speeds. There was also 75% reduction in audible noise, which was fantastic news for the nearby residential areas. Stora Enso’s pulp and paper mill Stora Enso’s pulp and paper mill in Nymölla, Sweden recently replaced a pulp pump motor and drive with ABB’s IE4 synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motor and drive package to test out the energy savings. The measured reduction in energy consumption, in the range of 15 to 25%, seemed almost too good to be true. But based on numerous tests the results have been reconfirmed via thousands of data points.

Radius Systems Pipe manufacturer Radius Systems’ plant in Derbyshire, UK, produces polyethylene pipes for gas and water transfer. Their twin extruder constant torque application benefited from the ABB SynRM motor technology by providing up to 15 percent lower energy use, a significant reduction in motor maintenance costs and a drop in audible noise. The best of both worlds The ABB SynRM is a solution that provides the efficiency needed while keeping on-going maintenance costs low via the advantages of permanent magnet technology together with the simplicity and service-friendliness of an induction platform. Each motor-drive package combines proven stator technology, an innovative magnet-free rotor design, a best-in-class industrial drive and advanced software to offer a complete, optimised solution.

Control Logic can assist in selecting, implementing and understanding your new SynRM motor. Call our ABB team on 1800 557 705 or email sales@control-logic.com.au.

This software package has been created to work for you (and me). It takes away the guess work, and gives you worry-free recommendations to potentially save a heap of money. Why over-spend on a system when there’s one at half the price that can do the same job and lasts twice as long? These costs could be simply applying the right sized filter-fan for the job, or ensuring there is no downtime due to equipment failure down the track. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s free, and at the end of the day it saves money. Plus the software is a lot more comprehensive than others on the market.

Brendan Zuehlke from our Brisbane office talks thermal management and cars. Let’s get straight into it.. When talking thermal management, what kind of applications tend to cause the most grief? What should we look out for? From a thermal aspect (in switchboards), variable speed drives are the biggest issue. I often use the analogy of a VSD acting as a small heater inside your cabinet. This needs to be taken into consideration when designing your switchboard. Out of curiosity why would someone choose a filterfan over an air-conditioner? A filter-fan is a great cost effective solution when applied in the correct way. They can be used over an air conditioner in an ambient environment that does not exceed the target temperature inside the enclosure. A filter-fan is also best utilised in a cleaner environment where contaminants such as corrosive gases or dust cannot affect the installed components. Does location come into it? A Brisbane vs Melbourne factory for example. Certainly, however not in the way people might think. The contributing factor is condensation! If a switchboard is installed in an area with high humidity then other techniques need to be adopted to ensure safe operating conditions. So what attracted you into this industry? My father is an automation engineer so I learnt about programming projects at an early age. I find the diversity of projects and problems I’m involved in satisfying. No two applications are the same. So I’ve been told you collect cars… how many cars have you tinkered with? What’s your latest toy? There’s 50+ (not all mine). I like to install engine management computers with some of my installations making over 700HP, that are then used in competitive drag car applications. My latest toy is a 1989 Toyota Cressida. I’m aiming for a 550hp street driven car. Is this a typical weekend? Cars? Not at all. I reserve my weekends for family and riding my mountain bike. Cool! Thanks for your time Brendan.

did you know The service life of LEDs is more than 50,000 hours.

Should I consider upgrading? Fluorescent lighting is used extensively across the world in a wide range of applications and the chances are that if your site has a requirement for hazardous area industrial lighting, then a large proportion of these will be fluorescent fittings. If you work

closely with lighting you’ll most likely be aware of some of the issues which can occur with fluorescent technology. Look around a site and you will probably see a number of fluorescents which are no longer working, or if they are still running, frequent maintenance will be required to ensure they are operating correctly. LED linear luminaires provide a solution to many of the problems which exist with traditional fluorescent fittings. If you haven’t already then you should really be considering upgrading your site to LED. At a glance, here are the major advantages of LEDs compared to conventional fluorescent luminaires.

any of today’s organisations are eager to implement Connected Factory, Industry 4.0 and/or IIoT concepts to realise benefits, such as reduced operational costs and better visibility and control. While it is unrealistic and costprohibitive for most to construct green-field facilities or “rip- and-replace” legacy equipment, many solutions utilise existing equipment and allow components to be strategically deployed. When updating a facility, it is important that expectations be set early. Despite the vision of an IP address for every piece of equipment in a network, the reality is end users will not be able to log into every panel meter, water pump and drive from mobile devices.

implementation

The first step when devising an effective implementation strategy should revolve around the environment and the devices, applications and processes that make it up. Before plans are put into action, consider the following five key elements:

PROTOCOL CONVERTER

Data Station Plus

The Data Station Plus from Red Lion is an industrial data collection and management device. The Data Station Plus offers protocol conversion, data logging and remote machine access with three built in serial ports and a 10/100BaseT(X) Ethernet port. Enable communication between devices

While most automation equipment is designed to last years, they often only communicate via proprietary protocols that commonly use RS-232/422/485 serial cables. Companies looking to connect devices from disparate manufacturers can now choose advanced HMIs, protocol converters and other automation products that natively speak different protocols.

4

Security

According to a recent Business Insider Intelligence survey, 39% of executive respondents indicated that privacy and security are the most significant barriers to IoT investment. Security was the most commonly cited concern among respondents. While this survey applies to all items in IoT, security should be an important concern for IIoT as well. How can sensitive data be protected when it is collected and transferred? What security measures are in place for the systems that collect, monitor, process and store IIoT data? Are there any regulations regarding the protection of data and information?

5

Staff

Provide a secure platform for device communication The threat of security breaches is low if nothing is connected to automation equipment, however our new reality indicates that security should be addressed through careful network planning. Routers can be deployed within a network to limit network traffic to specific types of traffic or to specific users, minimising the risk of a cyber-attack. Using VPNs or tunnelling appliances also makes factory-to-factory, supply chain-to-factory, or factoryto-distributor communication secure by creating virtual “tunnels” to transmit sensitive data through.

As more technology-based devices are added to the network, is the right IT staff on hand? Are other employees who are tech savvy available to help with installation and monitoring? Is software or remote monitoring needed to keep tabs on devices in other locations?

Overall implementation benefits The efficiency of the Connected Factory, Industry 4.0 and/or IIoT model isn’t derived from the sheer volume of connections, but from the competitive edge gained by the sharing of information between devices and humans. Seamless communication with operators, control systems and software applications, combined with practical networking options and support for native features and protocols, deliver exponential meaning to data extracted from industrial devices. These capabilities can take automation and remote management to new levels, thereby making this vision a reality.

cyber

security A

s technology innovates and evolves, cyber security issues and concerns will grow right along with it. When everything is connected, every business is affected and therefore every business is vulnerable. This means we have to change the way we think about cyber risk. The threat of cyber attacks from a wide range of sources including hackers, activist groups, organised crime syndicates and nation states has prompted asset owners in industrial environments to search for security solutions that can protect their assets and prevent monetary loss and brand erosion.

Understanding cyber security Strategic attacks are aimed at disrupting industrial activity for monetary, competitive, political or social gain – primarily toward industrial control systems. Physical security must also be considered, with unsecured gates and inadequate physical access controls being common vulnerabilities. Brands such as GE, have integrated security measures to prevent breaches with a robust cyber-hardened platform that forms the core of the industrial automation control system. It’s then augmented through application of multiple layers of defense at the plant, network and system levels. Product features can be enabled to manage all aspects of remote access and external communications. PACSystems RX3i The GE RX3i controller provides the foundation for Industrial Internet connectivity with self-protection features suited for a plant floor or a remote location. The following security measures should be treated as a standard to help protect data and processes from attacks and unauthorised access.

Achilles level 2 certification Independently verified to meet rigorous industry-recognised standards for reliability and communications robustness.

Trusted platform module (TPM)

22

Dedicated microprocessor conforming to ISO/IEC 11889 designed to protect hardware by integrating cryptographic keys into devices. This ensures the information stored in hardware is better protected from external software attack.

Role-based access control User access is user based on pre-defined levels of authorisation. Each level enables a specific set of user rights according to the role assigned to the user account, enhancing system security. Signed firmware updates Ensure that only the core operating system software supplied by the manufacturer will run on the PLC and that it is has not been tampered with since it left the factory.

PAC CONTROLLER RX3i IC695CPE330

PROFINET SCANNER RX3i IC69PNC001

The PACSystems RX3i CPE330 is a richly featured CPU equipped with a 1GHz dual-core microprocessor, 64Mbytes of built-in program memory and two independent high speed Ethernet interfaces. It is ideally suited for multitier communications and for synchronizing large amounts of data. Its metal housing provides superior noise immunity and it resides in the RX3i main rack and supports all RX3i I/O and Intelligent Option modules, up to 32K I/O points.

The PACSystems RX3i ProfiNet Scanner module connects a remote RX3i I/O rack of Series 90-30 or RX3i to a ProfiNet I/O controller. It scans the modules in its rack, retrieving input data and providing output data then exchanges that data on the ProfiNet LAN. It also manages communication between an I/O controller and modules in the remote rack. If communications are lost, the scanner manages I/O states according to the individual module configurations.

WIRELESS ROUTER MDS Orbit GE’s MDS™ Orbit industrial wireless router recently received the Wurldtech’s Achilles Certification for cyber security. The MDS Orbit is a highly reliable wireless router platform that supports advanced networking and security capabilities for single or dual-radio applications. Orbit’s radio choices include cellular, licensed narrowband, unlicensed 900MHz as well as Wi-Fi.

OPERATOR INTERFACE Quickpanel+ Series The QuickPanel+ is an all-inone device: an OI/HMI, a PLC/ process controller, machine gateway and data historian. It supports 5 IEC programming languages including relay ladder, sequential function chart, structured text, instruction list and function block diagram. Configuration is easy, with a common database reducing development time by eliminating the need to re-enter tag names, and an extensive library of preconfigured animation objects is provided.

Continuous Evolution Cyber security, like the technology its been created to protect is developing, growing and integrating at a rapid pace. Within the next 10 years our reliance and trust placed into online systems will be overwhelmingly integral to our business. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, the impact of an attack would be catastrophic. Monetary losses for the industry alone would be considerable. Relying on providers that treat security as a core part of their offerings will be a vital factor when considering any new technology installation. An actionable plan is required to identify the biggest impact to the organisation in terms of a security breach, and to eliminate any vulnerability. Cyber-hardened platform

Secure user authentication

Extensive testing has been utilised to ensure it will perform under extreme network conditions, such as “man in the middle” and denial of service attacks.

Your password is not transmitted across the network without encryption, preventing a “man in the middle” attack.

OPC UA secure

A front panel switch of the RX3i prevents any update to the application code and PLC firmware. The user can set this switch to enable or disable network downloads.

OPC UA provides encryption and certificate management, making it difficult for an attacker to impersonate a legitimate device.

budget travel E

Remember the time when Europe used to be cheap? Like $50 a day cheap? Yeah me neither, however Lonely Plant author Sara Wintle says it’s possible to get by in Europe on $100 a day (or less) if you’re prepared to stay in hostels and selfcater for meals.

ow often is money the deciding factor where you go on your next overseas holidays? For the majority it’s most of us! Working out how long your spending money will last over your holiday is sometimes a difficult and complicated task – especially if you have never been before. Let us help answer these questions as we explore what a realistic budget is around the world these days.

David Hearle, Founder of Online travel guide publisher eGuide agrees, saying that a recent trip to Italy cost about $180 a day for two people. Although when you consider Britain, and its very costly internal transport system, it wouldn’t be unusual to spend over $100 a day. Budget travellers are urged to pre-book flights and accommodation for the best prices.

Big Ben

Ba

AFRICA Hearle says it is extremely hard to travel on the cheap in Africa, with the exception of South Africa, where prices are often better than Australia. He says it is hard to get a hotel room in Africa for less than $150 a night and transport can be expensive.

eT Cap 24

Hearle recommends a daily budget of at least $100 a day “just to survive” in most parts of Africa and says you need to add a lot more for activities and tours such as game drives. This means a budget of at least $300 a day and Hearle says you could easily spend more. “Africa is not a budget destination,” he says.

ASIA Want your money to last? Then Asia, in particular SouthEast Asia remains the most affordable, with a budget traveller typically able to get by on $30-40 a day. Food is exceptionally cheap and in conjunction with cheap guest-houses and local transport, your budget can be stretched a very long way.

Duba i

Hearle says you can live “really, really well” on $100 a day in countries such as Thailand and can very easily get by on $50 a day. Wintle says you can travel even cheaper in India, where $12-15 a day will cover food, accommodation and local transport.

“Dubai is trying to capture the high-end market but when you’re actually on the ground in the Middle East, I think it is great value,” Wintle says. “They can’t afford to make it expensive, they’re desperate for people to visit.”

AMER

North America in recent months seem to have ramped up their tourism advertisements, with cheap flights sweetening the deal. However once you are there, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that prices are reasonably low if you look hard enough. For example if you are prepared to stay in a hostel, you can pick up a bed for about $25-$25 a night for two people in New York. Amtrak rail often have special deals also and is very possible to live on $70-$100 a day.

SOUTH AMERICA Comparable to or cheaper than Australian living costs, South America is quite easy to budget for. Hostel accommodation is about $30 a night, and food around $10. Things get cheaper in Bolivia, with neighbouring countries Chile and Argentina remaining good value despite its European influences. Wintle says local buses are great value, but internal flights can be “exorbitant” especially if you don’t speak the language or look for those online deals.

toy: code-a-pillar

fisher-price.com

The Fisher Price Code-APillar teaches young children the most basic concepts of coding: thinking skills, problem solving, patterning, and sequencing. CodeA-Pillar comes with eight segments, which kids can attach together in various orders. Depending on the order, the mechanical caterpillar executes different actions, like moving straight forward, turning right or left, or lighting up. And because there are no small parts, you don’t have to worry about toddlers chowing down on the pieces. You’ll be able to turn your kid into a coding butterfly for $70.

“Excuse me, does this have gluten in it?” If you have a gluten intolerance, more often than not, you’ve uttered this phrase at restaurants or potlucks. With ‘Nima’ in your pocket, you don’t have to; the small, triangular device can detect whether your food contains gluten or not. Who trusts the cook anyway..? Slide out one corner to reveal a slot where you can insert a tiny sample of food, then slip the capsule back in, and wait for an LED smiley face - yep it smiles. (If a food has 20 ppm or more of gluten, that smile turns into a frown). We can’t wait for this type of technology to expand to all kinds of food allergies and sensitivities. You can pre-order now for about $260.

For GE, there are two courses offered here –the 2 day CBC338 Controller Maintenance course and the 3 day CBS447 Controller Programming course. Both courses are focused around the GE Machine Edition family of products that include the popular 90-30 and RX3i platforms. Dates are available in 4 cities throughout the year and conducted by a GE technical expert. It is expected that participants will have all the skills necessary to confidently operate any GE family of PLCs within their industry once the course has completed.

he industrial world is full of technology – so much so, that we require an amazing amount of experts to help us understand them. Programming Logic Controllers (PLCs) are one of those vital areas many companies need to understand before operating. Perhaps making things that little bit more complicated, not all PLCs are designed the same, with most manufacturers often having their own list of functions and rules to operate effectively. What is a PLC? A PLC or programmable controller is a digital computer used for automation of typically industrial electromechanical processes such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines. PLCs can be used in many machines and in many industries.

Panasonic Training focuses around the FPWIN Pro programming software and the Panasonic range of PLCs, with each student provided with a copy of the current FPWIN Pro 7 programming software licensed for a maximum of 10,000 steps.

What does Control Logic offer? Control Logic offer training on both the Panasonic and GE suite of PLCs to get your team comfortably up-tospeed with their entire range. If you happen to own one of the latest PLCs from Panasonic, this training is complimentary. Where can I register? To find out more, please head to the Control Logic website and click on ‘Services’. From there, click on either Panasonic PLC Training 2016, or GE PLC Training 2016, which will present you with course information and a button to register and to reserve your place. Places are limited, so book in advance.

Anything else? If you can’t make one of our scheduled classes at your local Control Logic office, customers can elect to have onsite training. This may be more cost effective for those that utilise custom system processes. To find out more, please contact us on 1800 557 705 to talk about what options are available.
