Schmersal have released the AZM400 which boasts a market leading holding force of 10,000N. Its fail-safe bolt interlock consists of a locking unit with sensor technology and a motor-driven locking bolt, along with an actuator that features an encoded RFID-tag and a locking hole in which the locking bolt engages. With RFID technology, and PLe and Cat. 4 approval, it also maintains the last locked status of the interlock in the event of a power failure. It’s basically the best of both worlds with RFID technology and a motor driven bolt.

You’ll soon be able to fight holographic robots bursting through your living room walls using a hand-held blaster that’s a wearable hologram. Microsoft showcased a live HoloLens demonstration that pitted one headset-wearing Microsoft employee against arachnid alien bots crawling through a living room situation in what the company is calling “mixed reality gaming.” The demoed gameplay, codenamed Project X, allows you to defend any room in your home (or any other building) against an encroaching alien invasion. There are no wires, no cords, and no PC in sight. These killer robots are smart, too. Sensors tell the game’s foes where furniture and walls in the room are, and the baddies take this into consideration when they’re scheming an offensive against you. But your holographic weapon (which moves with you as you play) can morph into different tools. The demo player on stage initiated “vortex mode,” turning his blaster into a vacuum that sucked an alien to his fist and then launched it against a wall. I want one now!

Currently gaining momentum on crowd-funding site IndieGoGo, the ‘Touchjet Wave’ turns your TV (with a HDMI port) into a giant touchscreen. The technology behind this idea is the use of infrared sensing to make touch movements possible. Users first need to calibrate the device by placing some points in the right direction, then they are free to play any of kind of game and app available on Android. No touchscreen is complete without a stylus which can be used to sketch, draw or browse, or simply use your finger. Never squint on candy crush again.

Robots can now make pancakes through recipes Yep you read that correctly. Researchers in Germany have created a robot named RP2, and its learning to make pancakes and cheese omelettes by reading recipes on websites such as WikiHow. It is part of a European project named roboHow which started in 2012. Teaching robots how to read and act on simple instructions is essentially a difficult task. In one set of experiments, the PR2 robots perform simple lab tasks, such as handling chemicals. How do I order one?

Apple iPhone 7 rumours In addition to possibly being Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, reliable sources believe the iPhone 7 will sport some radical design changes. Here is what we know so far... The introduction of 3D Touch means the home button could be eliminated completely. In its absence, the screen could be enlarged or the entire device could be made smaller. Touch ID, which is currently integrated into the home button, would be moved to the side of the phone. A more efficient and boosted battery life is also expected (like they have done for their Macbooks), and that long rumored sapphire screen (used on Apple Watch).

C.H.I.P. - The world’s first $9 computer A company called Next Thing Co. has created an open source computer named ‘C.H.I.P.’ and it’s just $9 (US). An amazing feat! While it can be used a personal computer such as working in ‘LibreOffice’ with the ability to save documents and surf/check emails over WiFi, it can also be used to play games, and there are dozens of applications and tools preinstalled. Simply connect the necessary parts (keyboard, mouse and display) to use as a computer. Its 1GHz Allwinner A13 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal flash storage may not sound like much, but it’s got a full-sized and micro USB port, an audio jack with microphone, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. Did we mention its just $9? I ordered 10 already.

Though there’s no way to tell exactly what the network of the future will look like under the effect of the Internet of Things, there are three universal network aspects worth focusing on to prepare yourself – and your network – for the future.

What will automation networks look like in the next five to ten years? Wherever the Internet of Things (IoT) trend leads us, the underpinnings of future industrial networks that are universally beneficial to adopters will focus on simplification, uptime and innovation. Simplification. Using open standards in automation networks allows for manufacturers of all sizes to realise the same benefits as proprietary network solutions. Taking this a step further, what if the network were truly plug-and-play? What features would be required to enable such a network? Here are two in particular: effortless configuration and commercial off-theshelf (COTS) hardware. When using Industrial Ethernet, effortless configuration can better be described as “allowing IT support without needing it.” For example,

06

“Using open standards in automation netw sizes to realise the same benefits as today a machinery maker delivers a machine with an automation solution and network configuration. The plant operator (end user) integrates the machine into his plant. This requires changes to the plant’s network configuration so that is conforms to his local IT requirements. In the network of the future, the machinery maker will use a temporary network configuration to qualify the machine before sending it to the end user. The end user will be able to simply connect it, and the communication relationships are dynamically established at runtime. So there’s still work to be done separating the automation solution and network configuration. Within ‘Profinet’, however, we’ve already taken the step of using name-based addressing. This makes it easier for the

CLN | ISSUE 04 | FEB-MAY ‘16

end user to get up and running, and a big step in the right direction towards true plug-andplay. Another way to accomplish truly plug-and-play connectivity is through COTS hardware. This is not to suggest hardware from your local electronics store should be used, only that it could be. Why? Because though an inexpensive switch made for your home or office could possibly work just fine, it might last only 5 minutes in a production plant. Industralised products, with the same COTS technology built in, can withstand the moisture, vibration, dust and overall harsh environment. What exactly is that COTS technology in the network of the future? For example, already within Profinet we have technology in place to ensure the real-time transmission of production data, while coexisting on the same wire as IT data (e.g. TCP/IP, more on that later). That technology might become more mainstream with what’s known as Time Sensitive Networking (TSN).

| FEATURE

For production data, the Profinet protocol is still required at the application layer. Its transmission, however, along with any other traffic, could be handled by TSN. TSN, as of this writing, is still very new, but has the potential to ensure real-time transmission of data like Profinet does today. If it becomes COTS technology, then this greatly clarifies the path between IT and operation technology (OT) by extending their common physical layer (Ethernet) upon which protocols like Profinet and others reside. Uptime.

What good is a manufacturing environment if it isn’t up and running? In the network of the future, 0 percent downtime will be taken for granted. How do we maximise productivity by ensuring network uptime? Again, two features stand out as solutions to these issues, and are fortunately already available today: scalable redundancy and scalable security. The most basic way to ensure uptime is at the physical level: by using a ring-shaped network.

u

works allows for manufacturers of all s proprietary network solutions.”

07

This topology creates two connections for every device. However, don’t try this at home! Doing so would cause Ethernet packets to go around in circles, eating up bandwidth and causing major headaches. Technologies like Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) account for this by managing traffic, and in the event of a broken connection in the ring, convert the ring to a line topology. Such recovery can take tens or a hundred milliseconds. Going further, in Profinet “bumpless redundancy,” the failover is 0ms. In bumpless redundancy, a sender uses two frames, going in opposite directions around the ring. So, even with a failure, a frame will still arrive at the receiver. To ensure 100 percent uptime, redundant devices and even redundant controllers can be installed, thus expanding upon simple network redundancy The single biggest perceived challenge to a converged network is security. In business systems, security objectives are typically ranked in terms of priority as follows: Confidentiality Integrity Availability In many automation systems, the ranking of security objectives in terms of priority is completely opposite: Availability Integrity Confidentiality

To achieve scalable security, IT and OT need to agree on a security architecture that should be:

As simple as possible but not simpler (Albert Einstein). As uniform as possible – If a rule is applicable in one Understood and supported by all parties involved. A daily activity and not a one-time only task. If these can be reached, the network of the future can be a reality by allowing automation and business systems each to maintain their security objectives.

Innovation. In the network of the future, OT and IT need to share the same foundation (Ethernet) while exposing their data for vertical integration. The beauty of Ethernet is it allows enterprises to use the right protocols for the right task. There will always be different protocols used for different tasks. As network architectures continue to evolve, these protocols will begin to share the same infrastructure. That common infrastructure is standard unmodified Ethernet. So long as an automation protocol uses standard unmodified Ethernet, the benefits “come for free” as Ethernet matures.

“In the network of the future, OT and IT need to share the same function while exposing their data for vertical integration.”

08

CLN | ISSUE 04 | FEB-MAY ‘16

| FEATURE

For example, the IEEE has continually updated the 802.3 Ethernet specifications to increase the bandwidth from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and beyond. Profinet is one such protocol that uses standard unmodified Ethernet. As higher-bandwidth Ethernet is installed to accommodate multiple protocols, this speed increase happens automatically. It is not just the infrastructure that needs sharing to further innovation in the network of the future; it’s also the platforms. If Ethernet is the ‘how,’ then protocols for the data are the ‘what.’ Profinet handles the controlling and gathering of data from devices within production systems. Via proxies it

also gathers data from non-Ethernet devices. Meanwhile, standards like OPC UA enable the communication between, within and from production systems. When used in tandem, they complete the clear path from shop floor to top floor and into the cloud where analytics can be applied.

case it must also be followed in comparable cases.

OPC - Then and now* In 1996, the OPC Foundation released its first standard - which facilitated exchanges between PLCs and HMI/SCADA. At the time, there were many proprietary communication protocols, mostly developed by PLC vendors, which created isolated islands of information. Today, the OPC UA specifications address new security and data modeling challenges associated with serviceoriented architectures, and at the same time provide-rich technology openplatform architecture that is future proof, scalable and extensible. *information from www.OPCFoundation.org

ABB add a new model to its highly popular ‘all-compatible’ range’.

P

art of ABB’s all compatible drives portfolio, the ACS580 general purpose drive promises effortless setup and operation plus all important energy efficiency. Being an all-compatible drive, ABB believe this will integrate seamlessly into your processes, business and environmental goals. Control pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers and many other variable and constant torque applications. In fact ABB love this drive so much, they even wrote a song about it (not even kidding).

Its compact size means it won’t take up too much space when wall-mounted, and features a simple to use control panel settings menu with assistants to provide a smart and quick way to commission the drive into action -more on that later. Perhaps its biggest selling feature is that a lot of the essentials you would actually use are built-in as standard. Its simplified, and we all know simple is good – but does it do the job?

Starting up Ok so other than looking like a complete package, it was extremely easy to set up. There are no additional enclosures or components needed for wall installation, and it’s available with IP55 if required. While it can be used on its own, we were able to connect easily to one of our automation systems. It practically guided us through the setup itself with the user answering questions in the selected language through its detachable control panel with items such as motor, ramp and limit settings. The I/O menu shows how to configure the terminals and gives access to other terminal settings such as filtering, scaling, delay or function selections.

What’s included With a power range reaching up to 250kW and a wide-range of fieldbus adaptor options, it allows handy communication with all of the major industrial automation networks. Some of its included features reveal an EMC filter, swinging choke technology, a Modbus RTU fieldbus interface and safe torque off functionality. We found the editable home view option on the control panel a nice feature, which can be set to see the status of the drive and process at a glance. This was represented as data visualisations such as bar charts and histograms.

CLN | ISSUE 04 | FEB-MAY ‘16

As ABB like to share the same architecture and user interfaces from its ‘all compatible’ drives portfolio, any user familiar with the range will find this system pretty seamless. Virtually any application is covered through an optimal drive, which ultimately should result in greater efficiency at the end of the day.

Efficiency benefits It’s all about improving efficiency and reducing costs with the ACS580. ABB’s newest drive claims to not only optimise the energy consumption of an electric motor but also your whole process. In addition to monitoring hourly, daily and the cumulative energy consumption of the drive we found it assisted with the exact amount of energy needed to run the motor. The energy optimizer feature ensures maximum torque per ampere, reducing energy drawn from the supply. Its nifty built-in energy saving calculator displays savings for energy, CO2 emissions and dollars. A high-energy efficiency rating means it is also compatible with highefficiency IE4 motors to reduce total life cycle costs.

final ve

rdict

This drive is all about saving money, reducing energy usage, and improving efficiency. ABB are certainly experts in creating technologies that have a short payback period, and the ACS580 is no exception. Being an ‘allcompatible’ drive means its value for money and at the end of the day, it does what it promises to do with little effort, and how often can we say that?

Based at our head office in Brisbane, Peter Tennent talks VSDs and what he’d do with a million bucks. As a ‘Product Manager’ for ABB, what sort of questions do you find your customers ask the most? I find new users have questions on how to program drives, but more recently harmonics created by the drives and the effects it will have on the site is starting to become more of a hot topic. Plus of course complying with utility provider limits. Do you think there’s a bit of misconception there? Hmm, well just because the drive has a choke, some believe that further harmonic mitigation is not required. What sort of advice would you give? Like anything, read the manual, ask questions and don’t assume. Save money getting it right the first time - as well as saving alot of time. Men don’t read manuals Pete... Ok, what is the biggest VSD you have worked on and what was the application? A 500 kW, low harmonic VSD was being used to pump water out of a dam into a holding tank where the water was then being pumped 175km via a high voltage drive system to transfer water to another dam. Any major changes you have noticed with VSDs today? The addition of safety related options for drives plus the increase in the different types of fieldbus options and application specific firmware available. So why the big move to sunny Brisbane (Australia)? Before calling Australia home, I was on the south coast of England working for a system integrator doing PLC work on water treatment plants. I had been to Brissie before for a holiday and fell in love with the place. It’s a big city, without the big city feel. The weather and outdoor lifestyle aint bad either. Last question. Million dollars - what now? New home, go mortgage free and a very extended holiday - round the world trip. Very nice! Thanks Pete.

ussies are a creative bunch... How often do we come up with these amazing ideas with friends over a drink or bbq, but then leave it at that? Crowd funding has made it possible to turn ideas into reality through crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Aussies have seen alot of success recently, and it has been predicted that 3.4 billion dollars will be raised this year alone.

So what exactly is crowdfunding? Basically it allows new businesses to avoid the banks and getting into debt too early in their lifecycle. There are two basic ways it works. The first is rewards-based crowdfunding, which allows people to contribute money to an as-yet unbuilt product by guaranteeing they will be among the first to receive it if the people behind the idea raise the money they need. The other method is equity crowdfunding, where investors pay to own a slice of the company. Just make sure you do your research first before spending your rent money.

Once only known for tech startups, crowdfunding has been diversifying and is now becoming more commonplace in Australia as the launch-pad for all kinds of industries, from health to community projects.

When you consider, there are over 2 million small businesses in Australia accounting for 68% of employment, it is a fail-safe method to finance small business start-ups without the pressures of finance repayment before business becomes profitable.

What about the Luna Smartbed? Potentially the next big thing, this cover turns any bed into a smartbed. The Luna bed cover manages the temperature of your bed (dual zone if there are two of you), tracks sleeping patterns, is auto-learning, can be controlled by a mobile phone and has an inbuilt smart alarm, which wakes you up at the best moment in your sleep cycle. It also tracks the person’s heart rate and breathing rate. The project has raised over $1M (US) on Indiegogo.

A recent success story is father and son Stuart and Cedar Anderson who spent a decade creating a revolutionary system allowing beekeepers to harvest honey on tap, without disturbing the hive. With an initial target of $70,000, within 2 hours they had sold $830K worth of beehives. Within 3 hours they had sold more than a $1M of products. Not a bad effort. The initial run of products will be made in Brissie. Last year two Brisbane-based video game developers used KickStarter to crowdfund a game that was in mid-development after major game maker Sega closed its studios. They aimed for $600K and ended up with almost $800K from about 15,000 funders around the world.

In a standard deck of cards, the King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache.

Crowdfunding sites are leading to innovation and leaving it up to the people whether we want to see this technology. The University of New South Wales has joined this community raising money to finance the Southern Hemisphere’s first road legal solar sports car. The first model of the car, eVe was built as a race car, but the next version will fit the legal requirements of a consumer vehicle. For every 5 hours of charging on a sunny day, the car can travel about 160 kilometres. It can also travel at night for at least 500km thanks to a high efficiency lithium-ion battery. $37,000 has been raised for the project so far.

More people have been to the moon than the bottom of the ocean.

So while it seems like an awesome initiative to get a hold of the latest tech, for those wanting to launch their million-dollar idea, make sure you do your research. Crowdfunding sites take a sizable fee if your funding goal is reached, however it might have not been possible before sites like this existed. With over 40% of businesses expressing they have had successful launches from crowdfunding campaigns, the old saying “There’s no risk, there’s no reward”, seems prevalent.

e g a t l o v & long cables

Does yours measure up?

T

he sheer size of systems such as printing machines, conveyor belts, steel rolling mills or bottling plants require long cables connecting the individual electrical machinery and system parts.

Data can be transmitted over long distances without problem. However, the same cannot be said about “Voltage drops are often underestimated power for 24V devices. Severe voltage drops and can cause control components to can occur if the wires are not sized properly. fail or trigger a reset.” These voltage drops are often underestimated and can cause control components to fail or trigger a reset. Devices seldom draw current evenly. For 2 example temporary voltage fluctuations can occur when a motor is connected and draws a high starting current so analysing the causes of the failure is therefore much harder. We get similar effects when connecting loads with large input capacities. In this case a DC/DC converter as a “24 volt refresher generates a regulated 24V voltage to compensate for the fluctuation. 3

4

Decentralised power supplies Locating the power supply unit close to the device is one remedy as the drop at the 230V or 400V end is negligible due to the lower current. This would also counteract the general trend for decentralization. However, 24V power supply units for control circuits are generally still located in a central control cabinet. One reason is the desire to not have a dangerous voltage of 230V or 400V in decentralised control cabinets or machinery parts. Another is reducing the number of power supply units. It is simpler to adapt to the mains power supply with one central, standardized 24V power supply. Calculating the voltage drops across wires

5

Wire cross-sections (size) are selected according to preference or taken from charts which recommend a cross section according to the ampere value. These chart values are generally optimised to the admissible cable heating, not to the voltage drop. Undersized cross sections are often the result. Calculating voltage drops on wires is no great feat but does

involve mastering some of the uncommon values for material properties, cross sections, line lengths and their odd properties. If one powers a display panel located 30m away, you would expect a standard wire with a cross section of .75mm2 to be adequate. 9V 8V 7V 6V 5V

0V

Length of wire

0m 10m 20m 30m 40m 50m 60m 70m 80m 90m100m

The diagram shows a voltage drop of 4.5V for a 1mm2 line. Converted to 0.75mm2 this gives a voltage drop of 6.75V which means that just 17.25V reaches the display panel instead of 24V. These kinds of voltage drops cannot be compensated for simply by turning up the voltage on the power supply unit.

Things to remember when selecting a DC/DC converter It is important that the DC/DC converter has a broad specified input voltage range and that the input shutdown voltage is very low. This enables transient voltage dips to be bridged more efficiently. The converter itself must not cause an unnecessary current load on the input cable which would lead to a larger voltage drop and which could damage the system. The DC/DC converter should instead actively limit the peak input current which occurs for instance when charging capacitors. Ultimately DC/DC converters do more than just adjust voltages. They contribute to system reliability and increase endurance in the event of voltage fluctuations.

“..the higher the humidity within an enclosure, the shorter the life expectancy of the components inside.

H

Preliminary View eat inside electronic enclosures is a hazard for production and functional safety that is often Many control systems in modern electronic equipment are based on semiunderestimated. Today’s powerful electronic conductor components and computer technology. These components are being assemblies and components inside modern packed in higher density resulting in higher rates of heat dissipation and less machinery and systems are constantly exposed to natural dissipation through the enclosure surface area. Studies have shown that the rigors of increasingly higher temperatures. as the temperature stress increases on these components their life expectancy will decrease significantly. In order to ensure a constant level of operational reliability and a long service life for electronic Humidity Inside Enclosures systems under difficult ambient conditions, it is absolutely essential to know about the decisive Another deadly enemy of electronic equipment is humidity. You will always find a factors involved in air conditioning electronic certain amount of water dissolved in ambient air. The higher the level of humidity within enclosures. an enclosure, the shorter you can expect the life expectancy to be of the components inside. An air conditioner can exert its influence on this by reducing the level of humidity. The operating principle of an air conditioner is to convert warm air into cold air, thereby encouraging the accumulation of condensation inside the air conditioner and dehumidifying the air inside the electronic enclosure therefore reducing the level of humidity.

Proper Temperature Settings

A special physical effect is caused by a high degree of fluctuation in ambient temperature. Condensation has been known to accumulate on the inside surface of the electronic enclosure. If the temperature drops below the dewpoint, humidity condenses on the inside surface of the switch board. The dewpoint is a term used to express the precipitation of water from the relative humidity.

Correctly sizing an air conditioner requires precise information on the installed power component’s heat dissipation. It’s important to know how the components are mounted and what type of enclosure is to be used in the installation. Not to be forgotten in this context are the ambient conditions, such as electronic enclosure installation site, dust or emission content in the ambient air, relative humidity and fluctuations in ambient temperatures.

This is one of the reasons the temperature setting inside the electronic enclosure is still set relatively high at ~35° C. (ie typical plant temperature ~35° vs office room temperature ~24° C). Electronics do not need to be cooled down to human comfort levels, but kept below a temperature that prevents degrading of the components.

Check that air intake and extraction in the external circuit of the air conditioner are satisfactory to ensure that the thermal energy can be abducted into the atmosphere in an optimum manner.

Important Project Considerations Early on, during the project-planning phase for your equipment, you should always pay due consideration to the location of your air conditioning system. In the case of equipment with a high packing density, it is important to ensure satisfactory airflow in each of the designed enclosure compartments.

To make it easy Pfannenberg have made their PSS sizing software available to those that want recommendations on products for every unique application. It cleverly takes into account environmental conditions, specifications, heat loads & target conditions. If the airflow volume of components with large-sized built-in fans is greater than that of the cooling system, or if the airflow circuits counteract each other during operation, the refrigeration capacity is considerably reduced and heat pockets can form.

The Future of Cooling Units In the future, cooling will play a more significant role in machine design because it is now more important than ever for machine builders to think of air conditioning early on in the design process preventing expensive re-works and premature component breakdowns.

protocol conversion Though the Internet of Things (IoT) may be a hot topic in the media, there seems to be a bit of mystery for some around what is needed to truly make it work. The same holds true for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), called industry 4.0 by some, which may be more of a near term reality than the broader IoT. Considering the industrial reality associated with these terms, what are some of the building blocks of IIoT? What is protocol conversion? Wikipedia describes a protocol converter as “a device used to convert a standard or proprietary protocol of one device to the protocol suitable for the other device or tools to achieve the interoperability. Protocol conversion is the communication fabric that enables you to collect data from different devices and different protocols and translate those in a centralised device so that you can collect and compile data from all over a facility. Then you can turn this data into useable, trend related information and reports that help you to make informed decisions and effectively plan your resources. Some refer to this as the mining and displaying of data for actionable intelligence, which gives you real-time visibility to help make operations more efficient.

Protocol conversion is an important building block for the Industrial Internet of Things, and one you need to be familiar with.

HMI DISPLAY Graphite Series

DATA STATION PLUS DSP Series

Red Lion’s Graphite advanced operator panels are the industry’s first HMI touchscreens to combine a rugged yet aesthetically-pleasing allaluminium construction with a modular I/O architecture. All of the Graphite models offer drag-and-drop protocol conversion, data logging and web-based monitoring and control. With IECEx and ABS approvals, Graphite enables customers to connect, monitor and control processes in harsh environments.

Red Lion’s Data Station Plus is the single-device solution for protocol conversion. It bridges the communication gap between disparate serial, Ethernet and fieldbus devices. Drag and drop register mapping allows a Siemens PLC to talk to an Allen Bradley drive in just seconds. The Data Station Plus allows you to convert your old PLC’s and drive’s proprietary protocol into a modern and open standard. By unlocking legacy devices, you save money while avoiding a risky upgrade to equipment that is otherwise working perfectly.

HMI DISPLAY G3 Kadet Series Red Lion G3 Kadet HMIs are the perfect choice when what you need is the core functionality and consistent performance of a top-quality HMI. Available in two sizes, our G3 Kadet HMIs cost-effectively deliver the power of best-in-class communications alongside industry-leading protocol conversion capabilities.

What is available? In any Industrial environment, there are often many different devices in use, with each having its own protocol. This means that organisations typically need to handle several different protocols to gather data. The ability to provide protocol conversion in a human machine interface (HMI), like Red Lion’s Graphite HMI’s or any other automation product, is a great way to connect several different devices with different protocols, and aggregate overall data collection.

Protocol conversion is important because organisations often have a mixed bag of devices that have different ages and come from different suppliers or manufacturers. Sometimes these devices can be five, 10 or even 20+ years old. So how can you be IIoT ready when you use such legacy devices to operate many of your processes? Replacing equipment is often not an option because of cost and integration time. You need to find a way to protect your existing investment and make it compatible with more modern equipment.

DATA LOGGER Modular Controller Series The Red Lion Modular Controller series features an easy method of integrating multi-zone PID control, data acquisition, and I/O into your PC, DCS or PLC control systems. Expanding functionality is simple by stacking up to 16 hot swappable slave modules together to collect data. The Modular Controller is available with features include protocol conversion, built-in web and FTP server.

Speaking the same language Some newer equipment in a facility might be Ethernet ready, while older equipment might use a serial connection and a legacy protocol specific to that vendor. By using automation products such as Red Lion HMIs or Data Station Plus, which offer several serial, USB and Ethernet ports in combination with support for more than 300 industrial protocols, you can easily integrate different devices (and get legacy devices talking with newer devices) to get different equipment to communicate across multivendor environments. Protocol conversion is a concept that you should start looking at now as part of the blueprint for your IIoT readiness plan. With protocol conversion, you can get all of your devices – old and new – communicating to provide a holistic environment view that allows you to plan more effectively and take action.

Australia’s largest island national park is the tropical postcard brought to life: coconut palms, white-sand (and black-sand) beaches, the pummel of a waterfall on your shoulders. It barely even sounds like a bushwalk, which is probably the reason most people stretch this 32-kilometre walk across four days. ROTTNEST ISLAND | WA With its roads open only to buses and bicycles, few places are as bike friendly as Perth’s island playground. Beginning at the ferry terminal at Thomson Bay, it’s a 28-kilometre loop around Rotto and its 63-plus beaches. Park at the bike racks and enjoy the reefs at Stark Bay, or snorkel the underwater trail at Little Salmon Bay. For a shorter ride, the section of road around Parker Point and Salmon Bay is the most spectacular.

getting there...

For maps, tour operators and food and wine details, see www.murraytomountains.com.au.

It’s hard to decide whether the best thing about Australia’s premier rail trail, which threads through the Ovens Valley from Wangaratta to Bright, is the cycling or the food and wine. Take the side trail to Beechworth for quality restaurants and accommodation, or veer a few kilometres off the trail to the gastronomic pickings of the Milawa gourmet region. Or simply stay on the 84-kilometre main trail to indulge at Gapsted Wines, Bright Berry Farms and the Bright Brewery, among other places. The most difficult bit might be getting back on the bike.

power8 tool set

www.power8workshop.com A complete workshop in one box? Ahh yep! Invented by British designer Chris Elsworthy, the Power8 Workshop’s case converts into a table-saw, scroll saw, or drill press (the tablesaw’s fence becomes upright for the drill). The kit comes with four cordless tools: a 5-½” circular saw, a jigsaw, a variable speed 3/8” drill/driver, and a flashlight. An assortment of drill bits, driver bits, and jigsaw

blades plus a soft tool bag are also included. In the bench top mode, one of the kit’s two “power handles” installs into the left side of the bench top cabinet to provide central power, controlled by switches on the front, for a drill press, table-saw, or scroll saw. The left side contains the battery charger and cord. The power handles can drive each one of the tools directly.

However this Tetris version skips crowdfunding, and is available now for preorder for about $65. Created by Kevin Bates, the Tetris MicroCard features official Tetris gameplay with a brilliant OLED display in a portrait layout. It has six control buttons and a speaker w/mute option, and is USB rechargeable providing six hours of battery life. In a time when everything from your phone to your watch can play Tetris, you’ll be thankful to be free of annoying notifications or other distractions.

Moscow based pet care site Zveryatam has come up with this brilliant method of both protecting other people from your dog, and protecting you from other people. f you are like most businesses and have sudden anxiety at the thought of your power bill, there is a way to reduce the angst. While energy suppliers are seemingly increasing their prices each year, they are however rewarding customers with a good ‘power factor’ with a reduced bill. What is power factor? There are two types of power that exists; namely ‘real’ and ‘reactive’. Real power is the power you actually use, whereas reactive power is excess power not used but still measured as part of your ‘apparent’ power usage (real combined with reactive power). Basically, sites with a poor power factor will often experience higher than average energy bills due to wasted (reactive) power. Where do I find this information? To get started, head to the Control Logic homepage and click on ‘Services’. This will bring up a sub-list, and reveal the ‘Power Factor Correction’ link. Within the Power Factor page, you can download a flyer with more information or read the contents on screen. You will also have an idea what types of options are available to you and how to contact us. We partner with ABB, a leader in power factor correction and offer customers access to a rich experience in analysis, design and engineering skills for managing Power Quality issues.

How will power correction help? In addition to saving costs by avoiding penalty charges for poor power factor there are other benefits of installing power factor correction. Your equipment will be more energy efficient and will run with a lower temperature to increase service life. You should gain additional capacity and increase system load capabilities from existing equipment such as transformers, switchgear and supply cables. Also get peace of mind knowing you are running your workplace as efficiently as possible. What’s the process? If you believe you might be paying too much for power, Control Logic offer free consultations to see if poor power factor is to blame, and provide options to rectify it. If we determine that correction is needed there are several options available to you. Depending on your requirements, power factor equipment can be either wall mounted or free standing and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Anything else? We can supply, install, design or service your power factor correction equipment to cover every aspect of your power efficiency. Call 1800 557 705 and talk to a Power Factor specialist to get started. Don’t be at the mercy of power utility companies. Get your complimentary consultation and start saving!
