3D printable solar panels
Ceta & Control Logic
With 3D printing becoming more commonplace, Australian researchers predict we are very close to producing printable ‘paper-thin’ solar panels capable enough to power “entire skyscrapers”. As part of the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium (made up of CSIRO, Melbourne and Monash universities members), a group of 50 scientists have been working to make this technology a reality. At a consumer level we should see iPad covers, laptop bags, phone covers and more, collecting energy to charge these devices. With paper-thin technology (also made semi-transparent), it will allow printing directly onto materials such as roofing or windows, opening up endless design opportunities. Find out more by checking out the consortium’s website. The future looks bright.

web-enabling remote processes management reducescosts As the need to remotely control processes increases, so does the need for a convenient management solution. Web-enabling remote processes simplifies management and reduces downtime, lowering maintenance and operation costs.
History
The alternative solution—entirely automating remote processes—can be just as Remotely operated applications such inconvenient and expensive. Automation as wastewater treatment, wind energy requires frequent maintenance visits, generation and pumping stations must be either to prevent failures in critical systems regularly monitored and controlled to ensure or to fix failures once they occur. Both optimal performance. these scenarios can Wastewater facilities result in significant must consistently meet and often “equipment with moving downtime government regulations require external service for efficiency and are providers, costing parts must be checked regularly monitored to businesses substantial often and all data carefully time and money. ensure environmentally friendly operation. In order to surveillance that, without remote access, stay competitive with larger corporations, involves costly on-site monitoring. many smaller businesses must rent

expensive processing equipment—which may be installed and operated many kilometres from the renter. In addition, equipment is consistently becoming more complex to accommodate new production and quality regulations, making the management of such equipment more complicated. The distance between where the equipment is located and where it must be managed, combined with constantly changing technology, makes solving remote process applications increasingly challenging. Challenge Preventative maintenance, determined by system and equipment status data gathered during equipment operation, is critical to ensuring that remote processes maintain optimal performance. When wastewater
CLN | ISSUE 01 | 14/15
is treated, for example, filters must be regularly checked and maintenance is scheduled when filter changes are needed. Car wash applications often require daily liquid level surveillance, and pump and system status feedback is needed in order to avoid controller crashes. These and many more applications involving equipment with moving parts must be checked often and all data carefully monitored to prevent malfunctions and recognise potentially costly problems. If the equipment cannot be sufficiently monitored and controlled from a remote location, on-site visits multiply, since maintenance workers are needed to perform simple system checks as well. The additional trips quickly add up in cost and often result in production downtime. Also, if an external service provider is hired, the task becomes additionally time consuming which causes significant concern when monitoring is crucial to preventing critical system failures. Monitoring and controlling processes remotely and in real time helps identify future problems before they occur, increasing the efficiency of preventative maintenance and decreasing the number of on-site visits required, thereby reducing expenses. For this task, a time-efficient, cost-effective monitoring and control solution is necessary.
| FEATURE
A problematic solution Securing a robust, reliable method for remote equipment surveillance has proven problematic for many businesses. When external service companies are employed for such purposes, they will often install a control system comprised of PLCs, drives, and additional controllers—a variety of products often of different brands. Gathering complex machinery data in real time from all these sources at once can be challenging, as data usually can be acquired from only one PLC or critical controller at a time. This system is also inconvenient because the devices are virtually incompatible with one another, making communications among PLCs and other controllers either complex or very limited. Other methods require computers and specialised operating systems, as well as complicated and often expensive software, to help organise and log collected data. This requires further external sources to provide the knowledge and support needed to program, maintain and troubleshoot the system. Plus, this complex solution is often unstable and system crashes are common. A solution that works Web-enabling remote processes simplifies
u

system monitoring and control and provides a comprehensive, cost-efficient solution. When a web-enabled product is used to gather critical system data from all equipment simultaneously, the information can be simply concentrated then monitored or logged for future availability online. This solution ensures all data concerning machine input/output, status and faults is easily referenced and addressed, and it can be accessed easily from an Internet-enabled PC. Another method of web-enabling remote processes involves on-demand or automatic synchronisation. Using this solution, data can be automatically transferred from multiple remote sites to one central server, where engineers or service managers can monitor information directly. This avoids unnecessary connections to the remote controllers. Instead, remote devices can synchronise with the server, or the server can pull data from remote sites using FTP. This solution also allows operators to easily visualise the status of remote processes, providing central data for SCADA packages.

controller
New from Panasonic, the top-of-the-range FP7 series of programmable logic controllers incorporates the functionality and performance of a modular PLC in a very compact size.
Panasonic’s new FP7 series programmable logic controller has created a lot of hype since its release to the Australian market. One of the smallest available in regards to size, it features a 32 bit processor platform with adjustable memory capacity for program or data including a very fast 11ns per step processor speed. Panasonic claims it is able to replace a traditional modular PLC twice even 3 times its size. Size & precision The first thing you will notice about the FP7 is its size measuring just 90mm high and 83mm wide as the base form. Its direct connection of 24VDC to the processor eliminates the need for a dedicated power supply, and additional units can be simply clipped-on to suit the application at hand – no need for backplanes!

Paul Davies our Product Manager in Brisbane answers some questions about his role, his specialities and his journey so far. So Paul, in a nutshell, what exactly does a Product Manager at Control Logic do? As a group we are responsible for product promotion, inventory management, staff training, technical support, principal liaison and most of all, the sales of our product groups. In my case, I look after Panasonic, Jay Electronique, Klemsan and Relpol. With the number of brands you look after, do you find your role varies a lot? One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is supporting what we sell, whether that is something simple like a wiring diagram or assisting with the programming of a PLC, nothing gives the same satisfaction of making that product work as part of an overall solution. Tell me one of the weirdest requests you’ve received? I once had a request from a customer for some timers for use in a licensed Brothel (you figure it out!) So never a dull day then? Haha! What made you decide to work at Control Logic?

More froth than actual beer? Not ideal. The same can be said about power. Froth is wasted energy.
POWER FACTOR
Power factor correction installation Energy suppliers are changing how network tariffs are calculated. Large business customers with annual consumption greater than 100MWh but less than 4GWh will be impacted by the changes.

What are the changes? The demand charge component of the network tariff – a charge that reflects a customer’s usage and impact on the network will now be charged in kilovolt ampere (kVA). A customer’s impact on the network is measured by their overall demand and the efficiency with which they use their electricity (a measurement called power factor). Overall, this change means that customers with a good power factor will pay less than those with a poor power factor.

So what is Power Factor? There are two types of power; ‘Real’ and ‘Reactive’. When combined this creates ‘Apparent’ power. Power Factor is the relationship between real and apparent power (kVA). Any site with poor power factor will often experience higher than average energy bills due to wasted (reactive) power. How can we help? Control Logic and ABB are Power Factor correction specialists that can assist your business with supplying, installing, designing and servicing Power Factor correction equipment. Ask us how.

jeep cherokee 2014 | mini review
quickies
“If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you”. “I love pressing F5... it’s so refreshing”. “Why won’t sharks attack lawyers? professional courtesy”.
Jeep have recently unveiled their highly anticipated update to the Cherokee, for what could be described as confronting love it or hate it quirky looks. Priced from $33,500 plus on-road costs, this mid-sized SUV offers a new 9-speed auto transmission, and the idea of capable off-road motoring. Unfortunately the 9-speed was slow to shift down/up at the best of times. Fuel consumption was a disappointing 12L/100klms on test, which is some way from their claimed 8.3L/100klm. The Cherokee rides firmly, but is more than capable in corners and does surprise with decent performance from its 2.4 litre petrol engine.
Inside you will find plenty of head/knee and leg room in the rear, as well as comfortable driving seats. There is little in regards to standard kit with no auto headlights, no guidelines in its reversing camera, no steering wheel control for the audio system and no temperature display for your climate control. The infotainment screen is tiny but does feature Bluetooth, and USB music connections. While the Cherokee struggles with its rivals in the value for money stakes, it does provide distinctive looks and driveability. Too bad it’s let down by its auto transmission definitely room for improvement.

“With Apple Watch, we’ve developed multiple technologies and an entirely new user interface specifically for a device that’s designed to be worn. It blurs the boundary between physical object and user interface,” said Jony Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of Design. “We’ve created an entire range of products that enable unparalleled personalisation.”
Apple Watch will be available in three collections. Apple Watch, with a polished or space black stainless steel case and a choice of straps; Apple Watch Sport, with a space grey or silver anodised aluminum case and Sport Band; and Apple Watch Edition, with an 18-karat rose or yellow gold case and a choice of straps exclusive to this collection.
Reservations are still out how useful the Apple watch will be considering battery life with similar products have been less than desirable. You will also need to own an iPhone 5 or up to benefit from its features. Apple do seem to lack innovation lately, but no doubt it will still sell like hotcakes. Expect it in stores early 2015.
