Love. Dating. College. It’s like these things have been connected since the dawn of time. Those first few dates can be magical, but if you’re moving beyond that into something more serious, you need to know why you’re doing it. Here we outline some good reasons to enter into a serious relationship, and some reasons why maybe you shouldn’t just yet...

YOU ENJOY BEING WITH THEM Being with someone that you enjoy, and who enjoys being with you, is an untold source of strength, especially when life is full of storms. Ask yourself seriously: beyond the spotlight, beyond looking-good, and even beyond the shared values and noble character, do I genuinely enjoy being with this person? If the answer is yes, then you just might have something very special.

To Date or YOU ADMIRE THEM There’s a big difference between liking someone and truly admiring their character; attraction can wax and wane. If you truly value the character traits and gifts that they bring, then you’re setting yourself up for success in the long run. True admiration is hard to find, so don’t ignore it if you have it.

YOUR VALUES ALIGN If you and your main squeeze have the same values in life, it’s a good starting point from which to make decisions together. It’s hard to go through life with someone who is playing with an entirely different set of rules than you (see ‘unequally yoked’ in the bible). Define your common values and start working from there. YOU HAVE SIMILAR LIFE VISIONS “Can two walk together if they have not agreed to meet?”. We are all going somewhere in life. It would be a good idea to determine if the person you are in a serious relationship with wants to go where you want to go. Once you have a shared vision, carrying it out together is that much easier.

8 | convergemagazine.com

Not to Date YOU JUST THINK THEY’RE CUTE There’s nothing wrong with thinking someone’s cute (in fact, we recommend dating someone that you are actually attracted to), but don’t make that the sole reason you want to be in a relationship with them. They are so much more than a pretty face, and so are you. Get to know the real person and make sure you really like them before you proceed.

YOU’RE TRYING TO GET OVER A PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP If, for whatever reason, your previous relationship didn’t work out, don’t try and ease the pain with another relationship. Take the time to ensure that you are in a place of wholeness before starting your next relationship. There is no magic timeframe to find healing from past hurt — only you know your own heart. Get help if you need it; don’t dump your baggage onto another.

YOU WANT THE STATUS OF HAVING A GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND

YOU JUST WANT SOME EXCITEMENT IN YOUR LIFE

Status, reputation, call it whatever you want, but if you’re drawing your identity from the fact that you have a boyfriend/ girlfriend, or that you’re going out with so-and-so, then you have other issues that you need to deal with before you can consider a serious relationship. You should be drawing your personal value from your identity as a child of God and from the respect you have for yourself. Once you are secure in that, you will be set up for a healthy relationship.

We understand, you want to have fun, you want something to spice-up the monotony of student life. It’s fine, even healthy, to go on some dates. If however, your motive for starting a serious relationship just to fill a void or seek a thrill, you are on the wrong track.

7 HABITS OF EFFECTIVE STUDENTS by max funk

University can be a trying time. With so many pressures, responsibilities and opportunities, it can be difficult to find and maintain a balanced lifestyle. With that in mind, here are seven habits that will help you get the most of your university years (and the rest of life).

10 | convergemagazine.com

find a community

develop a prayer life

exercise regularly

We were created to be in community, so don’t let your studies make you into a hermit. Get to know your classmates and peers. Join a club. Go to church. Having communities of people that we trust allows us to be vulnerable, helps us with our decision making, and provides us with the emotional fulfillment that we all need.

If there is one habit to develop and maintain throughout your life, this is it. Even Jesus’ public ministry was laid upon the foundation of a vibrant private prayer life, so why should we think we can be any different? Guard your daily personal time with the Lord with tenacity and the blessings will flow into every other area of your life.

In high school I had a teacher who had the following words in foot-tall letters across the top of the front wall of his classroom: “Exercise Blasts Stress.” You know what, he was right. You don’t need to act like your training for the Iron Man, but maintaining a regular exercise routine will do wonders for your health and mental performance.

creative practice

eat healthy

limit screen time

practice sabbath

Everyone needs a creative outlet they can engage in, not related to school or work. Maybe you take photos. Maybe you make spotify playlists. Maybe you paint watercolours. Maybe you go hiking. Whatever it is, find something that you enjoy and cultivate it as a regular practice. It will create the mental space for you to unwind and reset cognitively.

Make no mistake, what we put in our bodies matters, and if you put good things in, you’ll get good results. Don’t allow the student budget to be your excuse. Vegetables are cheap and there are plenty of healthy grain options available (lentils, anyone?) “I don’t know how to cook,” you say. Have you ever heard of Youtube? But in all seriousness, a healthy and diverse diet is the cornerstone of lifelong health.

Studies about the longterm effects of screen time are still ongoing, but we already know that it has a significant effect on our cognitive function. Regardless of how much you use your phone, there’s no doubt that reading a book, chatting with a friend, or going for a walk are more beneficial than engaging in a mindless scroll cycle. Perhaps you could even turn your phone off for one day of the week. Which segways perfectly into the last item...

The Bible upholds the importance of a Sabbath, but so many of us ignore this practice. Why? Perhaps we are afraid we won’t have enough time to complete our tasks, or we won’t make enough money, or we’ll be wasting our time. All of those excuses fall away when we realize that the God of the universe really wants to spend time with us. If we put into practice what he has commanded, we will be blessed. Take a sabbath. God is waiting for you.

how to create the

Perfect Workspace Thoughtless, unintentional spaces don’t inspire people. When I was managing a coffeeshop, more customers commented on our physical space than our coffee. They’d talk about how the couches made it easier to converse with others or how the lighting helped them stay focused. Don’t get me wrong, the coffee was great! But something about the aesthetics of the space drew people in and kept them coming back. We managed to create a “vibe”, and people responded positively to it. After I left the coffee industry and started working from home, I took what I learned and applied that knowledge to my own home-office space. Now, being in this room makes my work more tolerable, even enjoyable on some days! As a college student, you too have the opportunity to create this kind of inspiring space for yourself. Whether you’re renting a room in an apartment, living the #dormlife, or staying at home, the space you create can actually motivate you towards productivity and (maybe) make studying enjoyable. Here are some tips for creating the perfect workspace:

12 | convergemagazine.com

1. Dedicate a Workspace and Keep it Sacred Your workspace can be anywhere as long as you never use it for other, nonproductive activities. When we try to do work in bed or on their couch, we’re quickly tempted to do some other activity that usually happens in that space: watch TV, take a nap, etc. That’s why I designated a specific space that I only use for my work. When I step into my workspace, my brain knows that I’m entering focused territory.

2. Put Your Stories on Display Displaying a few significant mementos from your life helps lighten the mood on days when workloads are overwhelming. If you looked around my office, you’d find a model sailboat from my grandfather, a tiny replica of the Sears Tower, and a coffee mug from New York. I chose each of these artifacts carefully because they spark unique memories that always cheer me up. Take your time and carefully select what you will display.

3. Make Some Cool Stuff (or Ask Your Friends) Good artwork — photographs, paintings, drawings, sculptures, or any other visual work that’s done well — has the power to bring life into any space. If you have some artistic gifts, make something cool that you’ll love looking at every day. If, like me, your artistic skills peaked with finger painting, ask some friends if you could buy some of their creations. Just make sure you let them set the price — you don’t want to accidently insult them by shooting too low!

4. Get Yourself a Good Lamp Confession time: I hate overhead lights. They shine too brightly and usually create weird shadows when I’m hunching over my computer trying to get some work done. Lamps on the other hand create a warm, intimate feeling that is more conducive for studying. Plus, they just look cooler! One of the most important parts of finding a good lamp is to find one you like.

Personally, I like the long, angular floor lamps with adjustable arms that look like they’re from the fifties. But I’ve seen great workspaces with all types of lamps: moderns, antiques, exposed bulbs, and intricate shades. It really doesn’t matter as long you find one that excites you. Trust me, it makes a huge difference. Buy. Cool. Lamps.

5. Pinch Those Pennies All this can get really expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. You’re in college (which means you’re broke) so you probably shouldn’t shop at the finest furniture stores in town. Spend some time looking for pieces at the local thrift store or antique shop. You’ll probably have to go back a few times, but you’ll feel like a huge success when you find that special, one-of-a-kind piece for cheap. (My office chair was $6!) You’re going to be in your room a lot over the school year. With a couple of bucks, a bit of extra effort, and a touch of creativity, you can make it the kind of space that you really enjoy. — Joseph Honescko

HOW TO LOVE THE CHURCH AND GROW IN YOUR FAITH IN COLLEGE by: julie thiessen

“I see a generation rising up to take their place—with selfless faith, with selfless faith.

faith entirely (Renegotiating Faith and Competition for Character Education, 2018).

I see a near revival stirring as we pray and seek— we’re on our knees, we’re on our knees.”

More than hard statistics, though, I’ve seen it. When I come home for reading week, my home church receives me with open arms. But, I’m one of the only ones left from my youth group. I’ve seen my friends graduate high school, go on to university, and come out deconstructed, disillusioned, and disconnected from the Church and their faith. Sometimes this seems almost inevitable.

It was the first week of school. The power had gone out, making the chapel too dark to meet in. Instead, the whole student body of Briercrest College was gathered in the foyer with one acoustic guitar, singing these words together. It was heavenly. My abiding love of 2007 Hillsong worship aside, singing those words with those people was extraordinary for another reason: as we worshipped together, everyone there was united by a passion to see God move in our generation. And, if we’re being honest, ours is a generation in need. Three national studies in seven years have confirmed that 2 out of every 3 young adults in Canada leave the Church (Hemorrhaging Faith, 2011), and 1 in 3 Christian young adults in public universities abandon their

34 | convergemagazine.com

But I’ve also seen my generation rise up. At Briercrest, I’m surrounded by peers committing their lives to vocational ministry, brothers and sisters serving in and out of the Church, and friends praying for revival in our generation. Students that love the Church, have found their place in her mission, and are following Jesus with everything they’ve got. It’s more than possible to hold on to the Church and to faith after high school. Here are some ways to do it.

Briercrest

LIVING THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH In Acts 2, the new-born Church is devoted to four main practices: the teaching of the apostles, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Life at my Christian college took on the same pattern: chapel daily and church on Sunday, time spent connecting with friends, time spent eating meals together, and time spent gathered in prayer. In a season of busy schedules, new relationships, and assignments, don’t lose the life of the Church. Seek out opportunities to be together with the people of God, especially if your campus doesn’t offer these things. Part of this involves joining with the full church — a diverse and multigenerational body of believers. As a young person, seek out older, godly mentors in your community or congregation. My college experience has been shaped by mentors who have helped to answer my hard questions and encouraged me to imitate Christ. One of the best ways to figure out your faith is to learn from people who genuinely live out theirs. If your campus doesn’t provide Christian mentorship, you’ll have to find this on your own. Chances are, there are people around you that would love to talk and pray with you, but don’t know how to initiate. Don’t wait. Take it upon yourself to find someone trusted, approachable, and willing to listen.

“It’s easy to point out problems and do nothing to help solve them. It’s far more difficult—and more vital—to put some skin in the game and really love the Church.” PUTTING SKIN IN THE GAME A professor of mine once shared a sermon out of Ephesians 5: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” The message had more obvious applications, but one comment cut to the heart: “The Church is Christ’s bride,” she stressed. “How do you expect a husband to feel if you speak against his wife?” As a young, hotshot college freshman, I was arrogant and critical of the Church. Christ loved the Church enough to give Himself up for her—I didn’t yet. Even if I was right (and most often, I was not), it didn’t matter what I said if it didn’t serve the Church. It’s easy to point out problems and do nothing to help solve them. It’s far more difficult—and more vital—to put some skin in the game and really love the Church. Taking one theology class didn’t qualify me to critique people who had been faithfully doing ministry longer than I’d been alive. As we learn, let’s resist the temptation to cynicism and passivity. The Church needs you and you need the Church. So serve. Join with other believers in ministry. Worship even if the music isn’t your favourite. Learn from your pastor, even if they’re not a dynamic speaker. Uphold the Church in action and speech. Actively pray for her. In everything, love the Church with a love and commitment that looks like Christ’s: serve with humility, bear with and forgive, sacrificially give, and joyfully participate.

Christian College Guide | 35

Special Interest Feature

BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF HABITS You don’t need me to tell you this, but one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual formation in our generation follows you everywhere and fits in your pocket. Recently, at a student worship night on campus, a friend of mine asked two simple questions: “What’s the first thing you touch in the morning? What’s the first thing you give your attention every day?” Her words reminded me of the unfortunate truth: from the moment I wake up, my phone is there. Most days, before I’d even consumed breakfast, let alone God’s word, I had taken in countless calls to react, buy, and scroll deeper. Her point was that the first thing capturing your attention every day will shape how your day unfolds. To grow in your faith, you have to deal ruthlessly with the things that stand in the way of that pursuit. We know this. But as with so many of the things we know we ought to do, we will be tempted to not take action, and we soon forget. We know that we should read our Bibles daily, but we never actually get around to it. We know we should pray, but we let ourselves get distracted instead. We know that social media leaves us feeling anxious, but we won’t delete Instagram.

36 | convergemagazine.com

“...the first thing capturing your attention every day will shape how your day unfolds. To grow in your faith, you have to deal ruthlessly with the things that stand in the way of that pursuit.” College is a time to set—and re-set—the patterns and priorities that will shape our lives. Let’s resist the temptation to ignore the voice of conviction and instead become people of the Word, of prayer, and of peace. Don’t beat yourself up, but don’t wait any longer to start. My campus environment at Briercrest is intentionally structured around a daily pursuit of Christ. The result is that I’m constantly being called into the life of the Church, being reminded again and again to take up my God-given role. I’m incredibly thankful for the relationships and structures around which have helped me to grow as a disciple of Jesus. These things are crucial for lasting connections to the Church and to the faith. Despite alarming statistics on young adults leaving the church, Hemorrhaging Faith also found that mentorship was a key contributor to lasting faith in our generation. Renegotiating Faith found that young adults who were rooted in Christian communities were more likely to take on meaningful roles in the Church and discover a deep sense of God’s calling on their lives. And Competition for Character Education found that both these things happen with extraordinary success on Christian college campuses.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, then your whole body will be flooded with light.” These are the words of Jesus, spoken 2000 years ago. On the surface, they seem rather straightforward in their interpretation: if your perspective on things is good or right, everything else in your life will fall into place. If you see rightly, you live rightly. But is there more to it than meets the eye? Pardon the pun, and let’s unpack this together.

any effort in order to see. We simply open our eyes and look around, as we have been doing since we were born. In the same way that this act of taking in and interpreting information happens subconsciously in our natural sight, it also happens in our spiritual sight. By spiritual sight, we mean our worldview and perspective on life. You can’t not have a spiritual perspective, just as you can’t not have a natural perspective. The only question is, what will your perspective be?

“Are we looking at God and his care for us through the lens of our circumstances and feelings, or are we looking at our circumstances through the lens of God’s promises? ”

Hebrews 12 talks about “looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” When the lens of our life, the eye of our heart, is fixed intently on Jesus, when we begin to grasp how big his love truly is, everything changes. Our problems don’t disappear, but they have far less destructive impact when our hearts are enabled by the Spirit to to see “the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of Christ’s love...” In fact, I believe that once we truly start to see how good He is, how lovely He is, how worthy He is, we truly stop living for ourselves, and our problems stop being “our problems.” Instead, every problem becomes an opportunity to manifest Jesus — to stand in faith, to worship, and to declare his goodness. We are, all at once, freed from our circumstances and empowered to fully engage with those circumstances in a way that truly moves heaven and earth.

Scholarly Sanctification Owning Your Weakness in Order to Step into Wholeness Amy Nickerson

T

here has never been a time when I felt more sinful or weak than when I was studying theology. Education can tend to do that. It makes us much more aware of how prone we are to make mistakes and how little we actually know. The world of academia brings information into our grasp in a special way — it teaches us to see through different lenses, to grow in our understanding of ourselves, those around us, and God. And while my goal was to become smarter, the years of sitting in lectures and burying my nose in textbooks brought about more questions than answers, reminding me daily that I’m limited. Yet there’s huge value, especially as Christians, in pursuing academic endeavors for exactly that reason. If you come out of your years of studies keenly aware of your lack of knowledge, like you’ve just scratched the surface of what you don’t know, I hope you embrace it. Owning your limitations helps you step into greater wholeness, and there’s nothing quite like attending school to catalyze that process. As you think about your future within the classroom, here are some useful tips that have helped me take advantage of this scholarly sanctification.

Take Initiative For Your Own Growth You can have the best professors on the planet and have access to the greatest curriculum, but ultimately you’re responsible for what you learn. If you truly want to see lasting transformation in your life, if you want to become who God made you to be, you must be proactive. You can fully engage in your classes or you can choose to just get by. You can admit your faults and repent when you’re wrong or you can find a scapegoat to blame instead. You can mentally check out when the lessons are hard or you can face them head on by wrestling with the content and applying it to your life. The choice is yours. I’ve often wished learning could happen through osmosis, but it doesn’t. Growth takes place when you commit to putting in the work.

Say No So You Can Say Yes One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is to admit that I cannot possibly do everything I want to do, or even everything I feel I should do. School offers a vast array of opportunities in an endless parade down your dorm’s hallway. If you’re like me, it’s easy to get swept up in the events, projects, committees, and teams. But don’t drown yourself in to-do lists. Asking for God’s direction, figure out your goals and values

and run hard after your priorities. Create margin and intentionally take time to rest by saying no to good things in order to say yes to the best ones. Staying focused on the life-giving things you care most about makes all the difference.

Learn to Rely on Grace God’s grace (by definition, a free gift you don’t have to earn) seems like the opposite of how the school system works. As a student, you don’t get straight As unless you’re good and right. In life, as a sinful human, it’s impossible to be good and right all the time. When you’re reminded of that, put yourself in a position of grace. It may be countercultural in today’s society, but make space for silence in order to hear from the Giver of Grace. Through practicing solitude and staying connected to the Vine, you’ll be able to discern what it is that matters most and bear good fruit because of it.

CANADA’S MOST VERSATILE PARTNERSHIP FOR A CAREER IN YOUTH MINISTRY

See Strength in Weakness When you’re exhausted from staying up too late in the library or waking up at an ungodly hour for a lastminute cram session, it’s easy to forget your motives and question why anyone in their right mind would want to go through formal education. Believe me, I’ve been there. Yet I hope even in that moment you keep your eyes open. It is there that you have the chance to own your limitations and step closer to the One whose grace is sufficient and whose strength is made perfect in weakness. In all my days of schooling there was no more significant, life-changing lesson than that.

SPIRIT-LED LEARNING In Secular and Christian Colleges By Joseph Honescko

I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT DISCIPLESHIP IN CLASSROOMS FULL OF ATHEIST STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS. It certainly was not something I expected to happen when I enrolled in a secular university. Some of my Christian friends who had gone to public colleges told me stories about classes that challenged their faith or insults they’d receive from their peers — I was expecting constant pushback to my faith. At the time, it was difficult to understand why God would call me to such an unpredictable, foreign environment, but I knew I was supposed to be there. Years later, as I study at a Christian graduate school, I can see how the Spirit was teaching me about discipleship throughout my undergraduate years.

42 | convergemagazine.com

MODEL DISCIPLES Eugene Peterson has summarized discipleship as “a long obedience in the same direction.” For Christians, obviously this direction should lead us toward Christ, but discipleship in general is not an exclusively Christian concept. During my undergraduate studies, my non-believing professors and classmates exemplified a certain kind of discipleship. But while their discipleship could be described as a long obedience in the wrong direction, their devotion challenged me to examine my own walk with Christ. My professors modeled discipleship through their monk-like devotion to scholarship and intellectual growth. Many were in the process of writing books and doing constant research to come up with new

perspectives and novel ideas. One particular professor, who had been teaching for over 50 years, was still excitedly looking for ways he could advance in his field. Halfway through the semester, he casually mentioned that he was fluent in seven languages and was teaching himself Mandarin in his spare time! Clearly this man knew something about constant discipline towards a desired end. Many of my classmates had similar mindsets. They’d spend hours and hours studying their subjects, constantly sacrificing sleep for the sake of improving their grades or fine-tuning their papers. Of course, there were other students who just wanted to have a good time. But even they were obedient in their pursuit of the hedonistic college experience. Perhaps this group, above the rest, most clearly counted the

cost of their discipleship and deemed it worthy of all the necessary sacrifices! These men and women weren’t modelling the Christian life of faith, but they did model lives of devotion to something beyond themselves. I am grateful because their dedication challenged me to ask myself a difficult question: What was it that discipled me? Sadly, my answer didn’t look much different than theirs. I still went to church and read my bible, but I didn’t really devote myself to God. At least, not with nearly the same passion my professors and classmates devoted themselves to their desired ends. To anyone who might’ve been watching, I hardly looked different than those around me.

Christian College Guide | 43

I was simply a disciple of my studies and what I could get from them; I was not a disciple of Christ, but was entangled in the pride of life. Every step I took, every choice I made was in the direction of keeping up my GPA so I could graduate with honours. I was haunted by the question people would often ask me: what do you plan to do once you graduate? Thinking about this made me measure the value of my education by a future return instead of a present gift. From early on, I failed to see my college career as a special, formative place filled with opportunities for meaningful learning. It was instead just a road I had to take to get me somewhere else. I was a disciple of my own vision for my life. Graciously, the Holy Spirit began to convict me, leading me to prioritize being a disciple of Christ first and foremost during my season of “secular learning”.

AN EDUCATIONAL CALL TO FAITHFULNESS My time of undergraduate studies has often brought to mind the story of Daniel. The tyrannical nation of Babylon had just captured his homeland of Israel and threw him and other young men like himself into their education system. The Babylonians thought they could redirect the obedience of Daniel by bombarding him with their teachings. Practices like this were not unusual in the ancient world; oftentimes, conquering nations would use education as an opportunity to change the core beliefs of the conquered people.

“THESE MEN AND WOMEN WEREN’T MODELLING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE OF FAITH, BUT THEY DID MODEL LIVES OF DEVOTION TO SOMETHING BEYOND THEMSELVES.”

44 | convergemagazine.com

But Daniel didn’t crack. He resisted the request to eat the king’s food, refused to abandon his prayer life, and remained faithful to God despite the challenging circumstances around him. Even when Daniel had no idea where God was leading him, no idea what his future would hold, he remained faithful, and God blessed him. The Bible says that God gave Daniel and his friends “learning and skill in all literature and wisdom”(Daniel 1:17). Their faithful work helped them establish positive reputations in the kingdom, and eventually, Daniel rose to become a leading political figure of Babylon. It can be easy to miss how crazy Daniel’s story is. He came to Babylon as a captured prisoner of a recently overthrown nation! There was no flipping through a course catalog, no option to choose a major, and no internship opportunities. No, Daniel had no freedom of choice but to just stay faithful in the specific place God had him. When I started college, I was the opposite of Daniel. I didn’t know how to be faithful in the moment. I assumed that nothing was more valuable than accomplishing my future goals, and I grew anxious as I tried to make them happen. I thought God could wait because graduation couldn’t. Things started to change when I began to ask for the Spirit to lead me towards Christ, to reorient my heart in the right direction. I began to see his purposes in all that I did. Even the courses that focused on secular literature, philosophy, and history, began to draw me towards Christ! Every nihilistic novel or philosophical explanation of existence gave me a chance to see the unique claims of Christianity. Little by little the Spirit freed me from the burden of trying to plan every moment of my future and helped me care about the call he had for me each day: to gratefully and faithfully follow the Spirit of God wherever I found myself.

SPIRIT-LED LEARNING IN MY CHRISTIAN EDUCATION My wife and I are pursuing theological education at a Christian seminary. It has given us the unique opportunity to see how God uses education to lead his people towards him in both secular and Christian settings. In some ways, they’re not that different; it can be just as easy to miss the Spirit’s leadership in theology as it can be in literature.

I still fight the same temptation to desire a grade or degree more than I desire to care about the subject at hand. As soon as I treat my classes as merely checkpoints on the way toward my future, I become deaf to my educational calling: the call to look and see how my education can teach me something new about God and His creation. Despite the similarities, I’ve found it is easier to follow my educational calling at a Christian college. This, I believe, is because the environment is much more welcoming to the Spirit’s leadership. None of my professors in undergrad ever prayed before any class - I think they’d be fired if they did! – but every one of my professors in seminary open our time together by inviting God to join us. How cool is that? I can feel that these professors care about their students. They desire for us to grow spiritually as well as academically. Having those kinds of mentors and teachers around has made it much easier to get through the days when I feel myself wandering and need some guidance.

“...THE SPIRIT FREED ME FROM THE BURDEN OF TRYING TO PLAN EVERY MOMENT OF MY FUTURE AND HELPED ME CARE ABOUT THE CALL HE HAD FOR ME EACH DAY: TO GRATEFULLY AND FAITHFULLY FOLLOW THE SPIRIT OF GOD WHEREVER I FOUND MYSELF.”

Knowing that my classmates share my beliefs has also helped keep me focused on my educational calling. Building community and fostering relationships feels more natural than it did in my time at secular college. Just the other day, a fellow student and I prayed together simply because we stopped and chatted for a few minutes while on the way to the library. We had only met once before, and we haven’t talked since. But in that moment our paths crossed, we shared our burdens, confessed sin, and called on God to lead us together. I’m grateful for the ways the Spirit led me in my secular classrooms and is leading me again now in seminary. In both spaces, he instilled in me a desire for spirit-filled learning. It’s a desire that I’m hoping will continue long after graduation, throughout my professional career, and even into retirement. This vision of learning is about more than goal setting and achievements — it’s about continued obedience in whatever direction the Spirit leads. It’s about discipleship. As you go through college, resist the temptation to treat it merely as the road to get you to the next destination. Instead, I urge you to view this time as a calling, a sacred season in which you can grow as a disciple, through the power of the Spirit. Your future plans matter, but so does your spiritual life today.

working joyfully WORDS BY MAX FUNK ART BY MICHELLE YONG

ork. The very word is ripe with connotations. Depending on the context, there may be many things that go through your mind when you hear the word. “We’re going to work till 12 and take a break.” “He didn’t come to work today.” “This project is hard work.” “I feel like I’ve been working all week without a break.” The list goes on. Ironically, We spend most of our lives working in order to get out of work. Monday comes around and we can’t wait for the weekend. Vacation is in three weeks and it can’t come fast enough. Retirement feel like a distant dream, but one day we hope to get there. Whether we are aware of it or not, our perspective and attitude towards work communicates very clearly what we believe about the Kingdom of God. That is, what the Kingdom’s purpose on the earth is, and our role within that purpose. So, in the midst of a myriad of opinions we must ask ourselves: What was God’s original intention for work?

Christian College Guide | 47

In Genesis 2:15 we read:

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. God created the garden as a perfect space, a temple, within his “good” creation. He then created man, whom he called “very good”, and placed him within that perfect space. Man was to work (to maintain, cultivate, till) and keep (to watch, preserve, protect) the garden. The garden was where God dwelled and communed with humanity in the “cool of the day”. The garden was the realm of His dominion and where His will was done. This was the intersection of heaven and earth, and humanity was created to exist as God’s representative on the earth. They were to rule as God’s vice-regents, carrying out his desired plan for all of creation. Adam was given both a clear mandate and defined boundaries within which to carry out that mandate. This was all before sin entered the world. This was when everything was “good”. From the beginning, work, namely a task within a specified realm, was part of God’s perfect created order. But the garden also represents the combination of wilderness and cultivation — the intersection of chaos and order, if you will. Man’s job was to maintain and expand the boundaries of this garden, constantly bringing order to chaos, subduing the world to God’s perfect will, and allowing for creativity and life to flourish. There was a God-given identity, a clear mandate and a realm of influence.

When man sinned, we lost all of those things. We lost our identity as God’s representatives on the earth, we lost our influence and authority over creation, and we lost our divine mandate. In short, we lost our work. Instead, we were given a new task, to work “by the sweat of your face.” Work now became a toil to survive. What was once a blessing became a curse. What was originally created by God as something beautiful and purpose-filled, became something undesirable and futile. We must work to survive, and no matter how hard we work, we are going to die and leave everything behind. This is the “unhappy business” that the teacher speaks of in the book of Ecclesiastes. This is the hopeless paradigm that the world is trapped in, with no apparent way of escape. Many Christians still operate within this paradigm today. Work exists as a necessary evil—a thing to be endured until we get to heaven where we won’t have to work again. As we shall see, this paradigm is entirely wrong, and getting out of it is key to stepping into God’s will for work.

THE REDEMPTION OF WORK When Jesus comes into the world, he comes to restore the divine mandate. By his death on the cross he has reconciled all of creation, including us, to the original purposes of God. This reconciliation includes God’s original purpose for work. He first restores our identity as children of God. He then restores our authority as God’s representatives on the earth. And finally, he restores our divine purpose to bring order out of chaos and expand the boundaries of the kingdom (or the garden, if you will). Jesus, the King of Kings, is taking back his world, and we are charged to work and keep the realm of his dominion as his representatives. We have, once again, a divine mandate. But how does this play out practically in our everyday lives?

48 | convergemagazine.com

To start, work provides dignity. It gives us the ability to prove that we are worthy of a task. As Jesus said, “He that is faithful with little shall be faithful with much.” It allows us to take responsibility and shape the world around us. It provides purpose. Work, when done well, also provides service to others. The greatest commandment, of loving God and loving our neighbour, can be carried out, quite simply, by doing our work (whatever that may be) with excellence. In the same way that God gave Adam a realm of influence, so each of us has been given a realm of influence. You may be a doctor. You may be a janitor. You may be a student. You may be a stay at home mom. But wherever you are, you are there with Godgiven influence. And wherever you are, you can start, even little by little, to align yourself with the purposes of heaven and begin to carry out God’s will on the earth. Each of us has given a garden to keep. All we need to do is recognize it. When we see and understand this clearly, that we have received a divine mandate here on the earth, our lives becomes full of purpose. And this purpose is something outside of ourselves, namely, King Jesus and his kingdom. Everything we are doing, we should be doing for him. It is said that in this kingdom, there are servers and there are lovers. Mary was sitting at Jesus’s feet, hanging on every word he said, while Martha was busying herself with many tasks. It’s a paradox, but the reality is, in the kingdom, lovers always get more work done than servers. Being in love with King Jesus, and understanding our purpose, invigorates us with a new energy to work, not just for him, but in his power and ways. When we understand our true purpose is to take back the world for the King of Kings, we will work joyfully towards that purpose, and our work becomes the vehicle that reshapes the world.

FINDING YOUR BEST WORK So how does one find the right work? Well for starters, each of us has been given a unique set of giftings and talents. And it’s vitally important to God and his Kingdom that we find out what they are, because He didn’t give them to us just for fun. God desires us to work. Athletics, mathematics, arts and sciences are the obvious ones, but many of our giftings are more subtle: emotional intelligence, intuitiveness, humour, evaluating people, public speaking, and listening, are all invaluable strengths when properly activated. All of the unique talents and abilities that we have were always meant to be used for Him. So find out what you’re good at and start doing it. However, it’s not just about work. There is another issue on God’s heart and that is joy. Do not be deceived. God is serious about joy, and the Christian life is supposed to be a joyful one. This joy is not simply an emotion, it’s a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and that fruit comes naturally when we’re walking in fellowship with God. The joy given is one of the ways that God confirms that we’re doing what he wants us to do. The Bible says that “the Joy of the Lord is your strength.” You can’t do something long term if you don’t enjoy it, and you can’t do it if you don’t have the strength. As a worship leader once said, “if it’s not enjoyable, it’s not sustainable.”

“It’s a paradox, but the reality is, in the kingdom, lovers always get more work done than servers.”

YOUR DREAMS AND DESIRES There is an undercurrent in some circles of Christian thinking that our dreams and desires don’t matter to God. And yet the scriptures say, “delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” This verse could be interpreted in two ways: God fulfills our desires when we place him as our highest priority, or God changes the desires of our hearts to be aligned with his heart. I believe both are true. As we continue to come under the Lordship of Christ and fall even more in love with him, the desires of our heart will change, even if we’re unaware of it. Don’t be afraid of your dreams. If your will is aligned with his will, your dreams will be his dreams — so follow your dreams! Remember, it’s not about you. When you consider the fact that those dreams were put there by God, you can give yourself permission to pursue them, and it’s in pursuing our God-given dreams and desires that we become fully alive. As the Proverbs say, “...a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” You’re the most effective in the kingdom when you’re fully alive, and in this God is most glorified. What are the dreams in your heart? Don’t ignore them. Perhaps God put them there, and he wants you to start pulling the weeds out of your garden. He wants you to start tilling the soil of your own corner in his everexpanding kingdom. Find what you’re good at, what you enjoy, and what you desire. At the intersection of your passions, gifts, and enjoyment, you will find the work that God has for you.

50 | convergemagazine.com

“When you consider the fact that those dreams were put there by God, you can give yourself permission to pursue them...” A JOY THAT LASTS FOREVER Finally, there is an idea out there that, in eternity, we will not work. I would argue that this couldn’t be further from the truth. If we harken back to the original garden, we see that good, purposeful work, was always a part of God’s perfect world. Humanity was always intended to co-labour with God in his care for creation, and in the age to come, that purpose will not change. We will rule and reign with Christ for all eternity and there will always be work to do! Why? Because God is not a passive God. He creates, he forms, he organizes, he establishes. In short, he’s always working, and we will work joyfully within his glorious plans and purposes for all eternity. Why not start now?

LOVE SECRETS John Mark Pantana Perhaps the best Christian album released this year was Pantana’s Love Secrets. Musically speaking, it’s a deftly executed folk-pop album. But it’s so much more. These are simple sweet love songs to the King. These are heart cries that resonate in the deepest places of all of us. “I believe you love me. I believe you care for me. And your love is better than life. Your love is sweeter than wine.” Go in your room, lie down, put it on, and let yourself be ministered to.

JESUS IS KING Kanye West Kanye West has made a Gospel album, and boy, is it a banger. Now this is still a Kanye album, and Kanye is a maximalist at heart. Vocal samples, dynamic instrumentation, and punchy drumlines are masterfully layered to create the perfect backdrop for bars and refrains that pull no punches. Confronting the culture, speaking to social issues, and praising the Lord, the album brings a heaping spoonful of the very thing Christian music generally lacks: male aggression. Hopefully this move to Christian music is a permanent one for Ye. The world would be all the better if it was.

MILES AND YEARS Allie Paige Allie Paige’s first LP, 2017’s Miles and Years, is a beautifully intimate, lyrically rich and musically exceptional journey that can be listened to over and over again. The opening track, “Places”, sets the tone for the rest of the album with the chorus, “I don’t know the places you’re taking me, but I trust it’s worth the waiting.” She has since released another EP, Comes and Goes, and has sung with Isla Vista Worship on tracks such as “Dancing on the Moon.”

A Hidden Life tells the true story of an Austrian conscientious objector, Franz Jägerstätter, who opposed the Nazi regime. Having already made waves at Cannes early this summer, the film is set to be released in North America this December.

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE Taika Waititi Before he did Thor: Ragnarok, New Zealand Director Taika Waititi made this gem. Hunt for the Wilderpeople tells the story of 13 year-old Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a troubled city kid sent by social services to live in the New Zealand countryside with the kind and loving Bella and her grumpy old husband, Hec (Sam Neill). Delightfully funny with countless memorable lines, this film warms the heart and reminds us that, at the end of the day, it’s all about finding a place to belong.

OUR PLANET David Attenborough, BBC (Documentary) Filmed over four years, David Attenborough’s newest nature docuseries with the BBC is a globetrotting, immersive look at the wonder and struggles of animal life on all seven continents. What sets this apart from Attenborough’s previous projects is his urgency to re-enchant us with the natural beauty and wonder of our planet, stirring us to steward it well. Check it out for stunning visuals of nature and a timely reminder of our role as caretakers of God’s creation.

ON THE ROAD WITH SAINT AUGUSTINE: A REAL-WORLD SPIRITUALITY FOR RESTLESS HEARTS James K.A. Smith James K.A. Smith’s new book takes readers on a journey with the restless African Bishop, one Saint Augustine of Hippo. The book is a study of Augustine’s life and writings as a “travelogue of the human heart.” Smith brings many other dusty travellers along for the ride, looking at the existentialist philosophy of Heidegger and Camus (to name only a few). Entertaining, insightful, and thought-provoking, this worthy read shows how we have more in common with this ancient African saint than than we could have imagined.

SELFIES: SEARCHING FOR THE IMAGE OF GOD IN A DIGITAL AGE Craig Detweiler In his new book, writer and filmmaker Craig Detweiler explores the social media phenomenon of selfies through the lens of being made in the image of God. The included discussion guide makes this a great resource for small groups or just talking about it with your friends. This book is worth reading if you want to think about how you can effectively use social media as a tool to love your neighbour and honor the image of God in everyone.

A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY John Irving (Fiction) In this classic American novel by John Irving, ex-patriot John Wheelwright narrates the events of his childhood growing up in New Hampshire alongside his best friend, the diminutive Owen Meany. The story addresses topics like faith, death, predestination, and the will of God. This book offers a richly detailed world with beautiful moments and unforgettable characters — it’s guaranteed to have you smiling or laughing on almost every page. You may even find yourself shedding a tear by the end of it all.

CITY OF MAN Ed Song and Coyle Neal

ALL SONGS CONSIDERED NPR

This podcast’s name comes from St. Augustine’s famous parable of the eternal City of God and the temporal City of Man. Presenters Ed Song and Coyle Neal come from different ends of the political spectrum, but they share their Christian faith and love of education in common. In this series, they analyze the nature of politics, conservatism, liberalism, and discuss current issues. City of Man is worth a listen if you’re trying to figure out how to talk politics as a Christian.

Started in the year 2000 by producers Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton, All Songs Considered is a talk show about music of unsigned bands you’ve likely never heard of. It’s a great one for winding down after a long week of classes. Who knows, you might discover some of your favourite new artists!

THIS CULTURAL MOMENT John Mark Comer and Mark Sayers This Cultural Moment is an insightful work of cultural commentary from pastors John Mark Comer and Mark Sayers. Comer is lead pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, and Sayers pastors a church in Melbourne, Australia — two of the most secular cities in the West. Together they explore the post-Christian cultural moment we are in, how we arrived here, where we’re going, and what it means to be a Christian in this rapidly changing world. Don’t miss this one.

TH E LA ST WORD

WHY GO TECH FREE? “This whole century is sensory overload” (“Dreams” by Shad). Every day our senses are constantly being bombarded with sounds and images, all of it carefully crafted to grab our attention and secure our devotion. They are like voices constantly chattering, building up to a fever pitch, trying to make us into acolytes for their vision of the world. These voices fill our media, technology and systems, and there’s rarely time to be still and process how they are shaping us. As Christians, we are to be formed spiritually, morally, and intellectually through reading Scripture and in prayer. In this busy, noisy world, we must take time away where we can listen for and be formed by the voice of God. “If I’m adding to the noise,” then put down this article (“Adding to the Noise” by Switchfoot). I’m biased, but I think putting down this magazine and listening to that song would be a pretty good use of your time. If you decide to keep reading, or found your way back here after the song ended, then I’ve got a story to tell you. Earlier this year, I decided to try a little experiment and see if I could live without a computer or smartphone. Screens have a tendency to paradoxically absorb and divide my attention; they make me overwhelmed, distracted and anxious. Our lives now revolve around these devices, and it’s hard to find time away. I had become like one of the prisoners in Plato’s famous allegory of the cave, chained to a post and watching shadows of reality playing before my eyes. I wanted peace, but I was jacked into what pastor Mark Sayers calls the “ambient anxiety” of

64 | convergemagazine.com

our globalized, digitally connected age (This Cultural Moment, Season 2, Episode 2). I was deaf to the voice of God. For 7 months, I relied on the public library and a little flip phone that can only call or text. I suddenly had time to read, write, and engage in relationships without distraction. It was refreshing, freeing, and rejuvenating. Like the prisoner who made his way out of the cave to see reality for the first time, I began to notice the world around me with fresh eyes. I started to hear God speaking to me again. I haven’t mastered this. I still have to work hard to protect space in my life for God, but I now know the difference it makes in my life. If there’s something in my story that connected with you, then it might be worth trying this out for yourself! Through this experiment, I learned anew that we need to take time apart from our devices, so that we can be formed by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Our digital devices are useful tools, and they improve our lives in many ways. They also make the brokenness of our humanity more acute, allowing us to see our hunger for God in sharp relief. The heartbeat of our age is lostness, restlessness; there’s a pent-up anxiety pulsating like magma below the skin of many. God is sufficient for you. His Word is the only antidote to your storms. His voice is the only voice that can bring peace to hearts and minds in an increasingly distracted, divided, and lonely world. Take time away to listen for Him. — Sam Hindmarsh

Think you can change the world with a degree?

We do.

can be big, like finding your calling big. Or it can be small, like asking a single question small. It’s about what you choose to do on the one hand, and who you are on the other. We are more than our jobs, and God has a calling for each of us, wherever we go. That changes everything. Starting with you.
