I’m at dinner with my friends. I momentarily glance up from my mushroom risotto, only to see everyone else glued to their phones. They’re busily picking the best filter to accompany the latest upload of the food they’re about to eat.
And then I wonder: if I enjoy a meal and none of my Insta followers see it—did it really happen?
Social media and smartphone technology are amazing, powerful, and helpful tools: I’m able to receive videos of my nephews taking their first steps, Facetime my mom from across the country, and search for hostels on the other side of the world. All while I’m sprawled across my living room couch.
Although technology continues to advance rapidly, the change in social interaction has been more of a gradual process. Technological progress has impacted users in ways of which we are just becoming aware. So how does this all affect the Christian community? How can we, as Christians, use social media and smartphone technology well?
We’re relational people, meant for deep and sacrificial relationships with one another. But the tricky thing with social media is that what feels like social connectivity can sometimes look a lot like loneliness.
A past study from the University of Michigan confirms that rather than fulfilling needs to be connected, excessive Facebook use may undermine one’s feelings of well-being and satisfaction. The individuals in the study who checked Facebook constantly were more likely to feel unsatisfied
with their own lives than those who didn’t check it as much.
To mask these feelings of loneliness, the anonymity of social media lets us present the best version of ourselves to our friends and followers. The more time we spend engaged with one another through our screens, the more inward-focused we become. We obsess over ourselves: our image, our connections, our time, and our comfort.
And so the endless scroll gives way to insidious comparisons: we measure our own worth against our friends’ public displays of affirmation. Hanna Krasnova, a researcher who led a study on the phenomenon, says that passively consuming all of this information creates envy through “comparison with a person or group who possess” (or at least seem to possess) “something we desire.” We’re jealous, because we want to be cared for in a real and meaningful way.

Frankly it’s embarrassing how long it can take me to choose a profile picture. And doubly embarrassing: how many times I check back to see what people are saying about it.
As Christians we are called to participate in radically different kinds of relationships. This connection can only be found face-to-face.
Social media encourages a culture of constant access to a wide network of people and all-consuming entertainment. Our fear of missing out (FOMO) is fueled by social media; so we‘re consumed by our phones, catching up on all the fun things other people are doing. As Kristi Hedges says in her article in Forbes, FOMO leads to second-guessing the decisions we’ve made, ranging from our down time to what career we choose or when we decide to have kids. So here’s the irony: the fear of missing out means we’re actually missing out on our own tangible experiences.
We’re constantly documenting what we’re doing, promoting ourselves with images, statements, and articles that we think are worthy of attention. But what about life behind the perfectly positioned profile picture? Because we are made to be loved and to be known, we are also supposed to be vulnerable with one another, to be held accountable to one another. It’s so easy to both present and protect ourselves through our phones.

Despite being able to stay up-to-date, our constant access to a wide network of friends fools us into thinking that it’s good enough. Being a true friend takes time. Apps like Zoom and Facetime are the closest thing we have to faceto-face interaction, and they can be used to maintain a deep friendship when loved ones are apart. But most often, we use a like on a photo or a retweet as a substitute for actually talking to friends in person.
I’ve become really good at being passively engaged in friendships. I have forgotten (and am desperately trying to remember) what it’s like to be present with people, to offer them the dignity they deserve by simply paying attention.
Social media and phone interaction do not exempt us from spending time with our friends. But what does the word “friend” mean anymore? Is there any intimacy or investment involved?
My phone is my time-filler. Whenever there is a moment of free time, I jump to check my email, Instagram, or the news. I also pull out my phone in any social situation that starts to feel mildly uncomfortable. Real social interaction can be awkward and messy, but my phone has become a source of both comfort and control in these settings. And let’s be honest, we all like to control things. If we need space or alone-time, we can physically and symbolically create that distance.
Our society has created expectations of being constantly available, of being informed about the latest happenings online, and of establishing a presence on social media. This makes it that much more difficult to unplug. It’s hard to imagine that before this current generation people often left their homes without a phone, without any way of staying in touch.
The love we want to receive and the love we are supposed to offer is not a simple, accidental thing: it is an intentional and personal connection. Be present enough to engage with what God is putting before you. Be present enough to let things get awkward sometimes, to put yourself out there, to love those around you more boldly and more sacrificially than you are comfortable with.
Because that’s community. It’s messy, it’s a bit scary, but it’s what’s real.

I will never forget my first day of university. “O-day,” as we called it. A friend of mine and I were the only two from my small Ontario Christian school to make the trip out to the west coast for University. We got lanyards and swag bags and met our orientation groups. There was a DJ on the lawn playing “Harder Better Faster Stronger” by Daft Punk. I was going to become a Theatre teacher in a high school. I was going to get a girlfriend and become a vegetarian. My mentality was something along the lines of the classic song from the hit musical Annie “I think I’m gonna like it here.”
It didn’t take long, however, for my starry-eyes to become disillusioned. It rains 179 of the 365 days of the year in the Fraser Valley, and most of those rain days happen during the school year. Things fell apart with my long-time high school friend. I didn’t feel like I fit in with the Theatre department. I had to withdraw from my first Education class for fear of failing. I got my first girlfriend, but then I got mono, and then I broke up with that girlfriend (not because of the mono)—all in one semester.
Second semester wasn’t much better. I was tossed on the waves of anxiety. I was lonely. I abandoned the Education program and soon after I was thinking of abandoning Theatre. I wanted everyone to like me but I didn’t really like myself. Only by looking back can I see what was truly happening in my life—I was grasping for an identity and a place of belonging. It was a painful journey with many steps and missteps along the way.
My first big mistake in searching for a place to belong is that I spent a lot of time and made a lot of decisions based on the fear of people. I lived out of a constant desire for the approval of my Theatre professors and had a persistent need to be well-liked by all of my friends. I felt like if I wasn’t perfect I would be disqualified from relationship with them, so I spent a lot of time trying to be the perfect friend. Living life based on a desperate need to make other people happy felt a lot like the humble servitude of the Bible, but it was all an idol because I was serving humans rather than God. I often left feeling frustrated when my acts of “selfless love” were not recognized.

or student, I wasn’t being honest about who I truly was. I was hiding parts of myself, and trying to project a false perfection instead. The problem with performing perfection is that even when you finally succeed in achieving an outward “perfection” in your relationships, you still feel alone because you haven’t shown people the real you.
We live in a world of social causes and for the most part that’s a very good thing. People are waking up to the damaging effects of greenhouse gasses and pollution on the planet, the unethical treatment of animals, the danger of giving our privacy up to megacorporations and the government, and the systemic injustices with regard to race, gender, and sexuality. University provided the perfect environment to discuss hot button issues with friends, join clubs, and rally behind causes.
One of the best ways I found to protest the evil in the world was to boycott. I boycotted meat, I boycotted sweatshops, and I switched from Microsoft to Linux. I felt awakened to the injustices in the world—they gave me a cause and a circle of like minded people to protest with. Being a part of these activist communities brought me a sense of identity. No longer was I just another average guy, I was Erik deLange: Vegetarian, Eco-activist, and advocate for Social Justice.
But no matter what I did, the voices in my head that I am not doing enough, that I am not good enough, vegan enough, carbon neutral enough, green enough, tolerant enough, or kind enough did not stop. In the same way that my pursuit of belonging turned people into my idol, my pursuit of social causes had the same result. It was a problem not unlike that of the Pharisees: paying attention to the outward works of doing right rather than my inner relationship to God. These identities were not truly transforming me, but instead they were “layered on”
externally. This discovery led to some hard but rewarding self-knowledge.
My false identities began to disintegrate while simultaneously relationships fell apart due to my inability to keep up my perfect friend persona. I began to see that brokenness and corruption were not just in the institutions around me, but also in myself. My fierce need to fix the world’s problems actually stemmed from an inability to examine my own. But here was the good news from Jesus’ own lips: “It’s not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick, I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners”.
I discovered that in Jesus I don’t have to please everyone, navigating my relationships with perfectionism in order to belong. I discovered in Jesus that I don’t have to layer on pretentious identities in order to have an identity.
I found Jesus to be the only one who can put an end to my sin and–not only mine–also the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2). Trusting in Christ and not my own efforts for this salvation not only freed me from sin and perfectionism but provided me with what I’ve been looking for this whole time: a true identity and place of belonging as a beloved child of God.

and trying to get people to like me. When I began to take my faith more seriously I found myself tempted to please my pastor or find identity in my particular denomination. God is still purging my life of these idols, and it is a slow and arduous journey. But here are some of the steps he has led me on to navigate this journey toward an authentic self.
“A [person] is never so proud as when striking an attitude of humility” wrote C.S. Lewis. The same stands for any sin. The more we try to dig ourselves out of it in our own strength, the more entrenched we become. The first step in accepting our own brokenness is coming face to face with the one who loves us as we are, before we change. But that can be a really hard thing to accept. As psychologist Carl Jung noted, “The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely.” University provides an opportunity to learn about the world and about God, but it is also a time when you will discover a lot about yourself. Some of the things that you’ll learn about yourself won’t feel very nice. As you begin the process of letting God and others see you and love you in your imperfections, you’ll begin to love others in theirs as well. This process leads to real and honest relationships. Slowly, a sense of true belonging rooted in the knowledge of God and of each other emerges.
I remember Christmas break in my fifth year of university. Because of my Christmas plans I remained on campus long after all of my classes were done and my friends had left for home. With no assignments to do and no friends around to impress, I felt like my hands were outstretched grasping in vain for some kind of identity and belonging. It was at that moment, when I felt most lost and alone, that God spoke to me. It dawned on me that all of my attempts at grasping for an identity and a place of belonging were worth absolutely nothing compared to this reality: that I was grasped by God.
In Christian communities, you can leave behind your false identities and people pleasing and instead enter into authentic connections with other human beings—with fellow students whose identity is first and foremost as children of belonging, made for relationship with God.
Though it dawned on me so clearly in that moment, the path to this discovery was long and difficult, and in many ways I am still learning it. At this very moment you might feel bogged down by the weight of the world, your unknown future, and your own personal shortcomings. That is why it’s so important to plug into a good church community to be reminded often that you are accepted, loved, and held by God just as you are right now. And God promises that he will see you through the valleys of deep darkness—He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion (Phil 1:6). You can count on God to bring you to where you need to be in order to be who you truly are. That is because it is his work from start to finish.

Each year, Capernwray Harbour Bible Centre welcomes about 100 students of various ages, nationalities and denominations for the Bible School Programme. Together with our full-time staff team, students form a community that seeks to discover the character of Jesus Christ and to experience the transforming power of His indwelling Life.
Programme Highlights The curriculum covers nearly all books of the Bible. Although students are required to prepare assignments, the emphasis is on personal discovery of Jesus Christ through discipleship rather than on academic achievement. I remember entering university in a state of absolute anxiety. So many decisions had to be made, and I had so many questions. Where would I move? What would I study? Were those studies going to pay off someday? What classes should I sign up for? Will I get accepted? These were big questions that I knew had the power to shape my life’s journey, my community, and my mind.
My undergraduate experience was split between two worlds. I began my studies at a Christian university, where dorm worship services and bible classes and church dates were all a thing. I finished at one of the largest universities in the U.S., a school infamous for its party culture. On both campuses I made great friends, received quality education, and stayed in touch with Jesus.

Some parents insist their kids go to Christian universities because, you know, while drugs and sex and raging parties are happening in “the world,” surely nothing of the sort ever makes its way onto a campus with mandatory worship attendance.
While there are many reasons to choose a Christianbased education, I’m not sure shelter should be one of them. Particularly because it’s naïve to think these places actually provide any kind of shelter. But even more so, as Christians, I don’t think our goals should be negative— meaning, I don’t think they should be stated in terms of what we’re trying to avoid and what we’re against. Rather than talking in a way that makes us sound like pompous, holier-than-thou weirdos, why not talk about what we gain with a Christian-based education?
The first thing you gain with any college campus is a community. University is the place where you meet friends that you’ll stay in touch with for the rest of your life. It’s where many people meet their to-be spouses, and it’s a place for professional networking as well. Campuses that profess Christian values have a different quality of community. Not that they’re necessarily tighter knit or friendlier, but the community is tied in with the body of Christ. The campus is an extension of the church. It’s where the church goes to be trained.
Don’t get me wrong: we need Christians in public universities. We can’t just go off and hide in our exclusive private schools and turn our nose up at everyone else. We have to relate.
But we also need places where Christian scholarship is taken seriously. And not only that, we need places where the Christian worldview can be fairly critiqued and shaped for our present day.
The Christian mind thinks a bit differently. It has to. This doesn’t mean it can’t engage in meaningful interactions with a secular mind. This isn’t to say that the Christian mind is somehow better or worse, more intelligent or simpler. What it means is that every thought and logical process of the Christian is (or should be) subject to the conviction that humans are created in the Image of God and have been reconciled to Him through the Incarnation and Resurrection of God’s son. This has radical ramifications for students entering the academy.

Harry Blamires, a student of C.S. Lewis at Oxford, wrote a popular book about this in the 60s, called The Christian Mind: How Should a Christian Think? The basic premise of his book is that Christians have sold out to the secular world. Basically, the secular world stopped respecting Christian intellect and then Christians themselves followed suit, downplaying their beliefs and convictions whenever they engaged in dialogue in a college or university setting.
Blamires argues over and over that there is no longer a Christian mind. Sure, we still ascribe to certain ethics, and spiritual practices, “but as a thinking being,” he writes, “the modern Christian has succumbed to secularization. He accepts religion—its morality, its worship, its spiritual culture; but he rejects the religious view of life, the view which sets all earthly issues within the context of the eternal, the view which relates all human problems— social, political, cultural—to the doctrinal foundations of the Christian Faith.”
The gist is that we’ve gotten used to the idea that the Christian worldview should be confined to the church. For the most part, the secular spaces of learning today demand that you set your faith aside in order to engage in unbiased thought. As if our faith is some accessory we wear.
What we believe is essential to who we are, and whether we like it or not, it will shape how we view the world and how we engage in any kind of study. Unbiased thought is something we can imagine, but not something we can actually engage in; it’s impossible.
I’m convinced that a commitment to Jesus and to a present Creator should lead us to ask good questions, engage in sound scientific reasoning, and send us on an insatiable quest for what is good and what is true. The university is a great place for this to happen.
A big benefit of Christian universities and colleges is nearly all of them make you take biblical studies or theology courses. That means as part of your general education, on top of basic academic skills and knowledge, and on top of the specialization required for your program, you’re required to think critically and academically about the Scriptures and about the intricacies of God. When I was first introduced to this, I didn’t like it. I had studied the Bible in church contexts and had been told that every word was written so that God could speak to me. Therefore, I had been taught to treat the Bible as the textbook to life, the Good Book with all the answers. But in academia, all this was stripped away. It was at Christian University that I

learned the messy history of the Bible’s various characters. I learned about context. I started paying attention to the more difficult parts of Scripture, while being taught how to exegete and pick sentences apart, word by word. No longer was the Bible an easy to use manual of any kind—it was a gross collection of stories that were hard to make sense of. So I stopped reading it.
It wasn’t until I realized the Bible was not written to me, that I picked it up again in interest. This was a huge mental shift and therefore bears repeating: THE BIBLE WAS NOT WRITTEN TO ME. BUT… it was—as one of my professors puts it—written for me, and for every believer in every generation to come. I realized that these stories had been passed down for thousands of years, preserving a mystery and majesty that nobody has fully understood. Finally, I was approaching the text with humility.
Academic theology and Biblical studies, at their best, give you the tools to look at the message of the Scriptures critically, while acknowledging that you are part of the story. You can never be outside of it. And within this story of the people of God, we find a consistent call to wisdom and understanding. We are told that in our ignorance, God has become wisdom for us. Paul writes to the church in Corinth, “It is because of [God] that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 Cor 1:30).
Christians these days have a reputation for being ignorant and foolish, and it’s not the good kind of foolishness that topples arrogance and pride like Paul talks about. The Scriptures tell us that if we are teaching Jesus—his life and
works—then we are teaching wisdom itself. If we’re going to talk to our non-believing friends, or our friends who are wavering on the road of faith, we must do so intelligently and humbly, respecting the mysteries of God by seeking out the resources for this discussion.
A good Christian-based education will challenge your beliefs rather than simply tell you what you should believe, or repeat what you’ve always believed. Studying God in an academic context is a bit like pulling back the curtain in The Wizard of Oz. What seemed like an intense encounter
with a smoky green face in the air becomes a confusing and questionable experience. You realize that the Scriptures didn’t fall from the sky after being penned by God Himself. You realize that church history has been messy and tragic and beautiful. You begin to see that God isn’t some great legendary wizard, but that He’s a Person. And once you realize He’s a person, that’s when you’ll understand that mystery abounds and good learning can begin.

In Nope, siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) try to get the “money shot” of an ominous alien presence hiding above their ranch. The film opens with Nahum 3:6, a verse about judgement for the sin of Nineveh, a nation that became greedy and corrupt. Peele’s film explores the consequences of the human desire for spectacle, and will open up fruitful conversation about God’s justice and redemption with others. You won’t look at the sky in the same way.

Father Stu is based on the life of Father Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg), a boxer who became a Catholic priest before being diagnosed with a deteriorating muscle disease. The movie is a raw, honest, and moving portrayal of how one man’s faith in Christ helps him endure a life of suffering and pain. Features rough language and alcoholism.
Set during the Gold Rush, this movie is about the origins of the American dream. A travelling cook and a Chinese man (John Magaro and Orion Lee) partner together to steal milk from a wealthy Englishman in order to make some money. It’s a story of a sweet friendship and a get-rich-quick scheme gone wrong. The simplicity of the plot allows the story to clearly illustrate how social barriers to wealth have been part of America from the beginning. Its spare score and storytelling masterfully build tension to the very end.
Dir. Baz Luhrman
While Baz Luhrmann’s film takes some creative liberties with Elvis’ life, the singer’s family gave Austin Butler’s performance their blessing. Butler may not be a dead ringer for Elvis, but he has captured the spirit and charisma of the musician. The film highlights Elvis’ influence by Christian spirituals, blues/ jazz, and the role of racism in censoring his music. Viewers are also brought to see the exploitative relationship between Elvis and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).

Pastor and spiritual theologian Pete Scazzero’s Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is a practical study guide for individuals and groups to reflect on how their thoughts, habits, and beliefs shape their spiritual lives. We are often unaware of these hidden factors, and Scazzero provides personal stories, advice and guided questions for reflection.
AJ Swoboda (2022)
In college, it can be spiritually disorienting to encounter tough intellectual questions and new worldviews. In his book After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith Without Losing It, professor and former pastor AJ Swoboda argues that while the deconstruction experience can lead to loss of faith, it is also an opportunity to mature spiritually. Having pastored people through deconstruction, Swoboda manages to be sensitive to personal experience and faithful to Christian orthodoxy. Pick up his book for a thoughtful guide through the murky topic of deconstruction.
Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi is about the memory of a place we once knew and our desire to return. The childlike Piranesi lives in a House with an infinite number of rooms and a surging ocean, and is enchanted by its beauty and power. Referencing both C.S Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia and the Greek philosopher Plato, Clarke’s captivating writing slowly unfolds the story, revealing new mysteries of the House. By the end of this novel, you will care deeply for Piranesi and his House.

This morning I woke up to see the sun reflecting the arch of a rainbow across my entire wall. “Hope! God is present and active today and tomorrow,” it seemed to say over me. I wondered why living with hope is a modus operandi so easily forgotten in my life.
Maybe I don’t trust the word ‘hope’ because its truest meaning is often diluted into mere wishful thinking by the way we throw it around.
When we use the word hope to describe less than the redemptive power of God, we invite ourselves into a pingpong game between optimism and cynicism. But aren’t these concepts prescribed by our world in newspapers, music and films actually enemies of true hope? Neither optimism nor cynicism really grapples with the world we live in.
Optimism is that hanging cherry air freshener I put in my car rear view mirror that hides the stench of my moldy Starbucks coffee cup with a stronger, artificial smell. In other words, it asks me to ignore the vile realities in and around me in order to focus my attention on an idea that may not be trustworthy. Sometimes it’s a good, spiritual idea that I am meant to adopt because it sounds like something the Bible or other Christians would say.
However, optimism is suspect because it never invites me to walk into the complexities of life. Instead of acknowledgement, optimism ignores so much of my experience.
Cynicism is just as unhelpful. It decides the last chapter by how the current chapter is turning out. It invites me to ignore the genuine good of life, from the thrill of a baby’s birth or meeting someone special to the most basic experiences of life, such as a hard laugh or cry, delicious wine, or the smell of the forest.
When consumed by cynicism, I am numbed to the experience of living as an embodied soul surrounded by beauty within and without. I have predicted my downfall, and that of the entire world around me. I think I know all there is to know and conclude that it’s just not worth it. To put it bluntly, cynicism makes me arrogant.
So, before I got out of bed, I declared war.
Optimism is out. Cynicism is out. Simply put, I need hope!
Let’s get clear that to be a believer means that I walk through the world with eyes that trust that redemption has begun in and all around me and will be completed in full. And it also means that I walk with my eyes open to the world, not ignoring the depth of pain in my heart and in my neighbours.
I don’t get to ignore hardship to avoid trusting God at the level my deepest pain resides. I don’t get to decide that because I can’t see a way, there isn’t one. I can’t let cynicism prove that hope is a false advertisement by killing my desire for a full life. My new way of being requires humility, courage and friends like Father Time and his wife Patience.
Hope is difficult. It often feels like a burden because we have to keep choosing it, even when we don’t feel like it or when it doesn’t seem reasonable. However, hope will not let us down because hope is not a mind trick or spiritual gymnastic routine. It is our decision to trust in Christ.
As Christians, we have no alternative but hope because it is the Way we have accepted. So may our modus operandi be not a flimsy optimism, nor an arrogant cynicism, but full trust and belief that we can truly put our hope in the promise that all things are being made well and will be made well.
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
