TEN HABITS TO START IN UNIVERSITY Eating Healthy Healthy eating does wonders for the rest of your lifestyle. There are plenty of dietary trends out there (keto, vegan, vegetarian) but eating healthy doesn’t have to be radical Closely connected to the one below, or expensive. Avoid sugars, you could call this any number of things: processed foods, and bad fats. fellowship, personal time, devotions, Get your micronutrients and communion, etc. Whatever you call it, the drink enough water. Done. point is to get alone and seek the Lord. If you seek Him, you will find Him. He wants to be found by you!

Personal Devotion Time

Daily Scripture Reading

A large percentage of Christians do not read their bible regularly, it’s a fact. That is their loss, but it can be your gain. There is treasure untold in the word of God. All you have to do is come with an open heart and a desire to know Him more.

Exercising Exercise blasts stress, it just does. Regular (3-6 times a week) exercise will dramatically increase your mental clarity, positive emotional state, and of course, your physical health. Life quickly becomes unpleasant without any of those three.

Waking Up Early Waking up early can have a huge impact on your mental state for the rest of the day. It early means that you’ll have time to start your day without the rush of obligations. This will only work if you are also willing to go to bed early. Here’s a hot tip: don’t sleep with your phone.

University is a great time to learn new things, have new experiences, and expand your horizons. It’s also a great time to establish new habits; habits that will benefit you for the rest of your life. Here are 10 habits to start in your university years.

A Creative Hobby

This is something that is often difficult to establish amidst a busy university schedule, but it’s worth it. This is not not to be confused with decompressing by watching We were made for Netflix or browsing Instagram. Find community, but specifically, something creative, that you enjoy. intentional community. This is not just Make Spotify playlists. Take photos. about checking a box and going to church, Write poems. Play an instrument. this is about finding and maintaining a Whatever. Intentionally setting aside close group of friends that you can be creative time for yourself will help vulnerable with and who will bring out you de-stress in a major way. the best in you. This group will always be changing over time, but you should always have those people in your life.

Intentional Community

Tithing

This is one of those habits that is easiest to start when you are young. Tithing doesn’t just mean giving 10% of your cheque to a church. The amount, and the recipient, should be prayerfully considered. Ask the Lord, “Who do you want me to partner with?” “How much do you want me to give?” Obedience in tithing is not easy when funds are low, but God Himself says to us "test me in this”.

Taking A Sabbath The theme of sabbath runs throughout the bible, but it seems to have been forgotten by most Christians. Sabbath is not just an obligation, rather, it is an invitation by God to set aside one day every week to rest and spend time with Him. It doesn’t have to be Sunday, either. Find a day of the week, do your best to remove any work or mundane tasks, and enjoy the presence of God.

Corporate Worship The pandemic world made this one a challenge but thankfully we are back to being free to meet together. It is so important not to neglect this, because corporate worship is vital to our spiritual health. If you can’t gather as a church, find some friends and a guitar, or a Livestream. Jesus and his presence is worth it.

Why You Should Forsake Busyness Written by Carson Leith

“I always get sick after semesters,” I tell people. “It’s like clockwork.” But maybe the clock was trying to tell me something. Maybe if I keep getting sick at regular intervals, it’s not something to write off, but something to change. I have spent the past month recovering from being on overdrive for eight months. During that time, I took a state of the union on my life. On the past: How did I get here? What decisions did I make that led to burnout? What mindset did I have? On the present: What are my commitments right now? What is absolutely essential? What can I stop doing? On the future: How do I go from here and live a life of margin and rest? How will I resist the temptation to fill up my schedule again? Here’s some of what I discovered about this recurring problem of busyness.

CHRISTIAN COLLEGE GUIDE - 9

ROOTS OF BUSYNESS PLEASING PEOPLE Much of my busyness was due to not wanting to let others down. I said yes because I was afraid of what they would think of me if I said no. So I said yes to the detriment of my own soul. Kevin DeYoung notes in his book, Crazy Busy, how “hurry is not just a disordered schedule, [but] a disordered heart.” My schedule is a reflection of my heart, and therefore, if my schedule has me in a state of hurried stress, then there’s something deeper to investigate. For me, that something deeper was my desire to have everyone be pleased with what I was doing (which, in case you’re wondering, is definitely impossible).

WANTING TO DO IT ALL Is anyone interested in just one thing? We probably all have multiple interests: things that we gravitate toward, things that we’re passionate about, things that we want to accomplish with our life. Maybe you’ve got debt you need to pay off, but at the same time you’ve struggled with whether to keep working your high paying job because it’s not quite what you’re passionate about. Meanwhile, you also want to develop your skills in _____ (which you’ve been working on during the weekends), but you feel conflicted when you come across free time because you also have made a resolution this year to spend loads more time with friends, family, and God. You also realize that it’s been awhile since you’ve worked out

for extra motivation. But wait, you think. This year, I really want to rest more and have a life where I can actually take a Sabbath. So maybe I shouldn’t do any of the above and just quit everything!

definition of margin: “the space between our load and our limits.” In other words, the space between what I have agreed to do and what I can handle. “Planning for margin,” writes DeYoung, “means…we understand what’s possible for us as finite creatures and then we schedule for less than that” (27). The thing to ask, it seems, when looking at your weekly (and yearly) commitments, is, “Does this provide me with the margin necessary to not be running

A LIFE OF MARGIN TRUSTING GOD Contrary to making decisions in order to please the people in my life, it became apparent that I only had one person to please. His opinion of me is all that matters at the end of my life. But in order to please Him and Him alone, it requires a great amount of trust. Since pleasing God is bound to disappoint others, we need to wean ourselves off the addictive need of their approval. For me, when it comes

living that lifestyle!

WAITING ON GOD Instead of rushing ahead of God and making our decisions on what will be best for us—what we should and should not commit to—we need to wait on God in prayer, seeking His will for each opportunity set before us. “God never asked me to achieve it all and burn out for Him. Yet so many of us are living that lifestyle!” commitments) required an immense amount of trust. It goes directly against the grain of the kind of life I would set up for myself. This is an ongoing test that God has put in my life. Am I going to trust God with my schedule by consulting him and what he wants for me, or am I going to entrust myself to my own vision or the vision of others for my life?

BEING A TIME REALIST

WHOM DO YOU TRUST? Everyone wants margin in their lives but few have the courage to give themselves such a thing. It takes courage to have space. It takes courage to do less. It takes courage to say no. The secret I am discovering is that this courage only comes from trusting God through a life of prayer. In order to take the leap to not just “become less busy” but to “live a life of margin and rest,” it requires a whole new level of trust in the one who governs all time. And who better to entrust your time to than the one who created it? This is the beginning of margin: a realization that time is not mine. It belongs to someone else. The busyness in my life was not the fault of others. Nor was it God’s fault. It was mine. I am my own culprit. And I am excited to enter into being more human as I trust in Him for our limited time here on earth. I want the easy yoke. I

EST. 1934

Community Culture Time at NBC is a Matt. 7:24 discipleship journey of building the foundation of your house on the rock. You’ll hear the Word of God consistently in class, chapel, personal devotions, student life, etc, while learning to obey and apply it in our family-sized community during ‘life-on-life’ learning together. Faculty Spotlight The majority of our staff live right on our campus. Faculty have an open-door policy, and all students are part of weekly staff-led discipleship groups. NBC staff don’t just teach in the classroom, but also live life alongside students. Students spend time in staff homes bi-weekly in ‘home groups’. Extracurricular Activities NBC has started club basketball and futsal programs, and many of the students and staff play in our weekly intramural leagues. Each student is assigned a weekly student ministry - many of which happen in the community of Nipawin (5000 people) and students attend local churches there as well.

Student Testimony “As I reflect back on my time at NBC, I’m astounded by God’s faithfulness in my life. I’ve grown more than I ever thought possible. Growth is not an isolated thing, but something that we do in community, as we seek to point each other to Jesus Christ.” — Fourth Year Graduate

2024 Media Selections

M u s i c Ordinary Ways Jon Guerra

Jon Guerra describes his music as “less Sunday morning worship music and more Monday morning prayer music.” This new album Ordinary Ways is honest yet uplifting and worshipful. Guerra’s music provides a safe place for people to bring their deepest wonderings and yearnings to God in prayer.

Caves NEEDTOBREATHE

Lead vocalist Bear Rineheart and crew are back with their ninth record, and they have not lost their touch. Like their last album, Caves was written and recorded in a private cabin surrounded by wilderness, rather than a traditional recording studio. This album was inspired by spending time away with one another. With each new album NEEDTOBREATHE continues to push their sound in a compelling direction.

Sanctuary Songs The Porter’s Gate Worship Project

For their newest album, The Porter’s Gate worship collective partnered with Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries to craft worship music that reflects the experience of mental health and Christian faith. Popular worship tracks often focus on positive emotions about God and seldom make space for the breadth of human experience – especially when it comes to suffering and doubt. These tracks are meant to provide songs of worship for the Church that “help people hold on to God’s presence at all times and in all circumstances” (sanctuarymentalhealth.org/sanctuary-songs). Featuring artists like Matt Maher, DOE, Leslie Jordan, Jon Guerra, and more, this album is a great resource for those who need compassionate voices of faith to ground them in their journey with mental health.

Movies

Amazing Grace: The Real Story Dir. Reuben Evans

This upcoming documentary will be a companion to Bruce Hindmarsh and Craig Borlase’s biography of Newton. Hindmarsh was one of the chief historical consultants about Newton’s life for the film and is interviewed in it. Interspersed with beautiful cinematic recreations of pivotal moments from Newton’s life, this won’t be one to miss.

Early Aughts Throwback: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Oppenheimer

Dir. Christopher Nolan

Dir. Gore Verbinski

Christopher Nolan’s latest film is about the consequences of the atomic bomb for its inventor, physicist Robert J. Oppenheimer, and the world that the bomb was unleashed upon. The deft use of 70 mm film captures with incredible crispness the minute world of particles and the colossal power of nuclear detonation. The film explores Oppenheimer’s powerful mind and perception of the unseen world physics, it is also shows his fascination with metaphysics and spirituality. Oppenheimer powerfully drives home the way technological innovation gets caught up in the power-plays of governments and military might.

2006 was another time, and Jack Sparrow’s swashbuckling adventures brought a sense of epic adventure, whimsy, and romance to the big screen that is harder to come by these days. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest amped up the entertaining stunts of its hero and supporting cast, as well as introducing a great villain in Bill Nighy’s tentacled Davy Jones. Revisit this one for some heavy nostalgia and that epic score from Hans Zimmer.

The Mitchells vs the Machines Dir. Michael Rianda

The Mitchells vs the Machines is a fun, family-friendly road trip movie about af family learning to connect with each other in the middle of an AI apocalypse. From the creative team behind The Lego Movie and the Spider-Verse movies, this animated flick is zany, hilarious, and heartwarming.

B o o k s Amazing Grace: The Life of John Newton and the Surprising Story Behind His Song Bruce Hindmarsh and Craig Borlase

2023 was the 250th anniversary of John Newton’s widely recognized hymn, Amazing Grace. To commemorate the life and story behind the song, church historian Bruce Hindmarsh has co-authored a new biography with novelist Craig Borlase. The book is a vivid account of Newton’s lifelong journey from being spiritually lost to being found again by God’s amazing grace. Full of surprising and lesser-known details about Newton’s life, Hindmarsh’s newest book is a must-read for anyone who wants to more deeply appreciate the life behind the song. The message of the transformative grace in Newton’s life remains as relevant as ever.

Culture Making: Recovering our Creative Calling (Expanded Edition) Andy Crouch

Over a decade has passed since Crouch’s landmark book was first published in 2008, and a new expanded edition of his book was published in 2023. If Christians are called to be culture makers, what does that mean in a world transformed by social media, smartphones, a global pandemic, and myriad social movements? With added content and a new afterword by Tish Harrison Warren, this revised edition recontextualizes Crouch’s original insights about being culture makers for today.

Slow Church: Cultivating Community in the Patient Way of Jesus C. Christopher Smith and John Pattison

Nearly everything in our lives is getting faster, but people and communities are not all getting happier and healthier. Prayer, discipleship, loving our neighbour, and caring for our neighbourhood take time and attention. Smith and Pattison’s book is about being a slow church in an increasingly fast-paced world. Inspired by the principles of the Slow Food movement and rooted in the teachings of Jesus, Slow Church offers a compelling vision for Christian community in the 21st century.

A DEGREE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN

WHEN YOU LOOK ahead, you can see adventure and opportunity on one hand — and a broken world on the other. How do those things fit together? The answer begins with the truth: that Jesus is king over all of it. At Redeemer University, you’ll have time to learn and prepare but also to experiment and explore. It’s where your faith and future come together so you’re ready.
