UNIVERSITY can be a trying time. With so many pressures, responsibilities, and opportunities, it can be difficult to find and maintain a balanced lifestyle. With that in mind, here are seven habits that will help you to get the most out of your university years (and maybe even the rest of life).
We were created to be in community, so don’t let your studies make you into a hermit. Get to know your classmates and peers. Join a club. Go to church. Having communities of people that we trust allows us to be vulnerable, strengthens us, helps us with our decision making, and provides us with the social-emotional fulfillment that we all need.
In high school, I had a teacher who had the words “Exercise Blasts Stress” in foot-tall letters across the top of the front wall of his classroom, and you know what? He was right. You don’t need to act like you’re training for the Iron Man, but maintaining a regular exercise routine will do wonders for your health and mental performance. Start small and build from there. Your body and mind will thank you!
Everyone needs something, something not related to school or work, that they can engage in. Maybe you take photos. Maybe you play guitar. Maybe you paint watercolours. Maybe you knit stuff. Whatever it is, find something that you enjoy and cultivate it as a regular practice. It will help you to unwind and reset yourself, creating distance from the stress and daily cares.
EAT WELL
Make no mistake, what we put in our bodies matters, and if you put good things in, you’ll get good results. Don’t allow the student budget to be your excuse. Vegetables are cheap, and there are plenty of healthy grain options available (lentils, anyone?) “I don’t know how to cook,” you say. Have you ever heard of YouTube? A healthy and diverse diet is the cornerstone of lifelong health.
LIMIT SCREENTIME
Studies about the longterm effects of screen time are still ongoing, but we already know that it has a significant effect on our cognitive function. Regardless of how much you use your phone, there’s no doubt that reading a book or chatting with a friend or going for a walk are more beneficial than engaging in a mindless scroll cycle. Perhaps you could even turn your phone off for one day of the week. Which segues perfectly into the next habit...
PRACTICE SABBATH
The Bible commands us to keep a Sabbath, but so many of us ignore this commandment. Why? Perhaps we are afraid we won’t have enough time to complete our tasks, or we won’t make enough money, or we’ll be wasting our time. All of those excuses fall away when we realize that the God of the universe really wants to spend time with us. If we put in practice Sabbath times, we will be blessed. Take a Sabbath. God is waiting for you.
BE PRAYERFUL
If there is one habit to develop and maintain throughout your life, this is it. Even Jesus’ public ministry was laid upon the foundation of a vibrant private prayer life, so why do we think we can be different? Cast your cares upon him, for he cares for you! Don’t be anxious, but instead go to God with your needs with constancy and faith. The result will be blessings flowing into every area of your life. He’s promised it and he is faithful.

Avoiding Pitfalls and Discovering Joy in any Occupation HOLY WORK
By Willie Shain-Ross
Over the past year, I have reflected on the first question in the Westminster Catechism: “What is man's chief end?” (Catechism is a fancy word for a set of questions and answers that help guide a believer in their faith). That question has anchored my spiritual life during a season of immense transition. After four years in seminary, two as an intern, and three as a pastor, I found myself stepping away from pastoral ministry and what I thought would be my calling and career. Circumstances, health, and family responsibilities took me in a very different direction, which left me wondering, what was I to do? If I was no longer a pastor, what was my calling? Hence the
question, “what is man’s chief end?”. The more I meditated on the question, the more I realized the profound truth expressed in the catechism’s answer:
“Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.”
It is such a profoundly simple answer, and yet so hard to live out. Our ultimate calling is to find joy in our God. Think about how counter- cultural that is to everything around us. So much of life tells us we must find joy in the here and now, in our experiences, and especially in
our work. I’ve lived in cities where tech companies promised fulfillment and meaning to their employees by recreating a college campus filled with dining halls, sports fields, and lounges. But in these companies work was the pinnacle, and the rest of life (including God — especially God!) took a back seat. I’ve also worked in settings where the pressure to succeed, the threat of a quick fire, and the toxic culture meant everyone was viewed more like an ATM than a human. Work was soul-sucking and felt like a curse. If I spent my weeks dehumanizing others for the sake of profit, how was I going to model God’s love for humanity? And finally, as someone who worked in Christian ministry, I fell into a common error: I elevated pastoral work as the only way to find real meaning in vocation, even at the expense of my own health and family.
Occupation vs Vocation
We often distort the role of work in our lives. We overvalue it, we undervalue it, and we confuse our occupation with our vocation. You could say that occupation is what you do, while vocation is who you were made to be. As the catechism has laid out so well, our ultimate vocation is this: God wants us to worship Him (i.e. to prize him above all else) and find enjoyment in Him. Simple, beautiful, but not easy! However, when God’s grace opens our eyes to his beauty, when it enables us to cultivate an intimacy where we are delighting in Him, we find we are freed to explore and enjoy many different types of work because our ultimate vocation, our ultimate calling to honour and enjoy God has been settled. Our occupation, or our work, will shift with our season of life, but if we understand this vocation first, we are far more likely to find joy in it. However, if we throw our worth and identity into our occupation — whether that’s succeeding in business, becoming an academic, or working in pastoral ministry –we will miss our greater vocation and be far less satisfied with our lives and work.
" Our first parents weren’t able fulfil their jobs; their performance fell short. They got distracted and betrayed their Benevolent Boss."
fied with my work and so my sense of worth rose and fell with how well my sermon was received, how good the discussion was when I taught, or even how many people showed up on a given night. I became stressed about my ministry, my performance, and often lost sight of Jesus. When we lose sight of Jesus in our workplace (ministry or otherwise) we start using people: we use people to raise our sense of worth, or we use them to raise our net worth — or both! Conversely, if we reduce work to just a paycheck, we will lose our sense of purpose and agency. I worked at a university after college and often found myself ticking away the hours and wishing I were someone else. I wasn’t present with my work, nor could I see what God was doing at my workplace. I wasn’t honouring the work that God had given me. No wonder I felt empty and my work seemed worthless.
Redeeming our Work
Back in the day, God created work to be good when he blessed Adam and Eve to rule and cultivate the earth. It’s incredible — God gave humanity their first job! He handed over stewardship of his creation to his creation. Sadly, their prestigious occupations didn’t last long. Our first parents weren’t able fulfil their jobs; their performance fell short. They got distracted and betrayed their Benevolent Boss. All of humanity and creation and work has been adversely affected since then. Because of this there will be times when we walk with integrity, put in the hours, and yet we might still be let go or be forced to
lay off staff because we didn’t make budget. I’ve talked to farmers who put in years of hard work, but a prolonged drought made their crops wither. I’ve known friends who loved their ministries but were suddenly let go and blamed for things outside their control. You can look at any newspaper and see how different companies take advantage of marginalized communities, perpetuate injustice, or continue to ravage the earth. Our work lives often groan under all this oppression.
And because our own hearts and desires are fallen as well, we can make work our identity, or idol. If we’re successful, we feel entitled; if we are not, we feel worthless; we spend most of our time in a state of anxiety in between these two extremes. Considering our tendency to idolize or demean our work, we need to remember that God is always present with us, and that He has the power to redeem our work at the moment we choose to serve him in it. We can still rejoice though outward adversities and personal weakness hinder us. These trials do not have the last word in our work, in our story.
work of valuing and loving others, of labouring for justice with integrity. Accountants engage God’s creative work when they create financial order out of chaos, artists create beauty out of nothing, and teachers create spaces and lessons to help people grow. All these occupations are creative and redemptive ways to create lasting goodness in this world and in the world to come. There is no one right path, or a more holy occupation — we can all engage in God’s work in many ways!
Enjoying the Presence of God
Living into our God-given vocation also gives us a framework to better understand our various occupations, keeping us from idolizing and over-identifying with our work, or from reducing work to a way to make a paycheck. When I was a minister, I over-identi-
Because Jesus died, rose again, and will come again, we know that he will not only redeem us as individuals, but will also redeem all of creation. He will redeem our work. Tim Keller puts it best when he says, “Because Jesus will come back to end suffering, restore peace, bring justice, and fill his people with joy, we can enter into our work holding on to the goodness of material creation, the value of the human person, the primacy of love and grace and mercy, while also holding onto the importance of justice, truth, and integrity.” In summary, Jesus gives us the power to explore careers and enjoy the good parts of work, while also recognizing that our work here on earth is temporary and was never intended to fulfill us. In everything we do, we can keep our mind on things above, partnering with God in his creative and his redemptive
" There is no one right path, or a more holy occupation — we can all engage in God’s work in many ways!"
In the arena of our working lives, “what will I do?” is a huge question. But more importantly, the question we must ask ourselves is this: “Am I seeking God and enjoying Him as I do this work today?” For my own story, I am now working with a Christian Graduate school in fundraising. It is a job I can honestly say I never would have imagined for myself. But, in this job, I have seen God’s handiwork in the people he has brought into the college, in the generosity I see him cultivating in donors, and in the way he has tasked me with building his kingdom, one donation at a time. I get to invite people into God’s work in the world, and though it is not the pulpit ministry I imagined for myself, it is a joyous ministry because it is ultimately God’s ministry. I’m learning that work cannot save me, it’s not the basis for my identity, and it cannot ultimately fulfill me. I’m learning that when I give God glory and enjoy Him, my work becomes a present joy.

With All Your Mind
An Invitation to Whole-Brained Worship
By Chris Ley
In my first semester at university a friend of mine was drowning in the demands of his double-major studying math and physics. His life was spent sprinting from lecture halls to labs, to the library, cramming and scrambling to stay afloat through the unyielding demands of academics.
Exhausted with his university life, he met with a mentor.
The older, wiser friend was a minister with an engineering background, experienced in both the school of life and a life of faith. He was utterly reasonable, which made the seemingly unreasonable thing he was about say all-themore unbelievable.
He declared to my exasperated friend, “You will never have more time than you do now”.
The words sounded outrageous, offensive, impossibleinconceivable!
Unfortunately, he was right.
If you are a young adult, freshly graduated from high school and starting out in post-secondary education, you must hear ever be again. I repeat: you have more free time right now than you ever will again! You have space now that you will long for later in your life as you ask yourself, “What on earth did I do with all my free time?”
You may be poor financially, or impoverished in terms of work or life experience, but you are richer in time than you will ever be again. And time is the most precious of all earthly resources!
So, what to do with all this free time? All this space? What
rhythms and routines should define your post-secondary self?
"If God is real and our faith is true, it can handle all our criticisms and challenges."
Let me suggest something you may not have considered before: perhaps you ought to use this God-given space in this unique stage of your life to develop your mind. Maybe you should use your academic acumen and energies to advance your intellect; to live into the command of Christ to love the Lord your God with all your mind.
Brain-dead Beliefs
“I’ve never met a Christian like you before”.
The words came from one of my dearest friends, an agnostic with little exposure to Christianity and even less with a living, breathing Jesus-follower. His father is an incredibly successful inventor and mad-scientist-type who once quipped, “Christianity is the most brilliant lie, because everything it promises you don’t receive until you die”.
My friend was raised with the assumption that Christianity was a fairy-tale, an over-inflated ancient myth that made bald-faced lies about heaven and Jesus to subject and control its adherents with remarkable global success for two millennia. He was taught that modernity and especially the scientific revolution provided the perfect pin to pop the bloated influence of Christianity over humanity.
By the end of high school I was struggling to answer the questions being hurled at me about my faith and how it explained evolution, ethics and the problem of evil.
With these questions and conversations swirling in my mind, during my undergraduate degree I dove headfirst into seeking understanding, studying evolutionary biology and environmental science. I embarked on a path to plumb the depths of scientific knowledge to understand the majesty of the Creator by studying His creation.
I asked every question I could think of; I left no stone unturned. I found the most ardent atheists and signed up for their seminars.
I returned to church with their criticisms and my subsequent questions as I sought to understand how biblical faith and modern science can support one another rather than lock horns in an intellectual fight-to-the-death.
After I graduated with the science degree, I jumped into a Master of Divinity, asking further questions around ethics, sexual orientation and gender identity, denominational distinctives, and the infallibility of Scripture. I sought to understand how sanctification and spiritual disciplines work alongside being saved by God’s grace revealed in Jesus Christ and confirmed by His indwelling Holy Spirit.
With trusted friends I asked questions of God and Scripture and faith that I had always been afraid to explore. After all, If God is real and our faith is true, it can handle all our criticisms and challenges.
The Queen of the Sciences
Christian faith is often assumed to be anti-science, anti-progress and anti-intelligence. But during university I discovered theology is not anti-science; it is the queen of the sciences! Seeking God through studying His Word invites us to activate our minds and ask questions, propose hypotheses, and test those theories through the lens of Scripture.
For example, a common concern amongst Christians and critics alike is the idea of a “literal” seven-day creation described in Scripture. This is a favourite foil that non-Christian scientists use to expose the supposed ridiculousness of Christianity. However, if you read the creation account literally, meaning you employ critical literary tools to study the text, you see that Genesis is not a modern science textbook written to tell us how the world was created. Genesis isn’t really interested in the “how?”, but far more in the “why?” and the “who?” of creation. The creation account in Genesis 1 is an ancient Hebrew poem that emphasizes the goodness of God in creating this good creation. It has little to no interest in answering most of the contemporary questions modern science asks, liberating the text from the burden of addressing issues it was never intended to answer.
Furthermore, as you continue to read Genesis “literally”, you see that the sun isn’t created until the fourth day of
creation, which is problematic for a 7-day-creationist as the sun’s existence is imperative for our sense of the length of a day. “Day” is a relative term that depends on where you are located. Standing on Earth a day is 24 hours but on Mercury a day is 59 days, and on Jupiter one day lasts only 10 hours. So where was God standing when He created? Was he standing on Earth? On Mercury? On Jupiter? Was He not above Creation, hovering over Creation? Do we not read in Scripture that “for God a day is as 1000 years” (2 Peter 3:8; see also Psalm 90:4)? Furthermore, days 1-6 of creation have a start and an end in Genesis 1: morning and evening. But not
"During university I discovered theology is not anti-science; it is the queen of the sciences!"
day 7. Day 7 doesn’t end, leading some to hypothesize that we are still living in the seventh day now.
The point of all of this is not to make you an old-earther, but to suggest that you don’t need to be brain-dead to believe the Bible, nor do you need to avoid scientific advances and theories. To follow Jesus includes an invitation to use all your mind to love the Lord! It’s an invitation to study biblical texts on their own terms, to enjoy the advances in modern academia, and to use your God-given mind to find compatibility and complementarity. St. Augustine wrote that, “All truth is God’s Truth”. We don’t need to be afraid of truth, scientific or otherwise. If God’s Word is true, it can handle and accommodate modern academic advances and challenges.
Your time at university can be the unique season where your faith is strengthened through your mind being totally engaged in fully-orbed, intellectually rigorous study.
A Renewed Mind
Now to get more spiritual.
Loving the Lord with all our minds is how God transforms us into Christ’s image.
In Romans 12 Paul writes, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
If you are a believer and follower of Jesus, then you are not your own. You were bought at an unimaginable price, and in response we are invited to give ourselves fully to Christ in joyful gratitude for how he has already given himself fully for us.
This response to God’s mercy is true worship.
This “proper worship” is first defined by Paul as a refusal to be conformed to the pattern of this world, refusing to live in the same way as those who are blind to God’s mercy reveled in Jesus Christ (v 2a). Instead, we are instructed
"To love the Lord with all our minds is what enables us to love him with all our heart, soul and strength as well."
by Paul to, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. The way we live as living sacrifices dedicated to Christ’s glory, not conforming to the patterns of this world, is by being transformed by the renewal of our minds.
Our minds are the gateway to a life of saying “no” to sin and offering our bodies as a living sacrifice in gratitude to Christ’s cross and God’s mercy. To love the Lord with all our minds is what enables us to love him with all our heart, soul and strength as well.
The transformation of your mind is a work of God as His Holy Spirit abides in you and you abide in Christ. And university is the perfect soil for this transforming, renewing work to happen!
A Place of Discovery
You are at a place of learning. Of discovery. Of research and observing and questioning and seeking answers. This season at university, college, or seminary is uniquely dedicated to the formation and development of your mind.
But at school you must also be careful. There are some excellent false teachers and wolves in sheep’s clothing who hunt and prowl on cam-
puses, alluring and preying upon unsuspecting students as the serpent entrapped Adam and Eve. Ask your questions in Christian community and be careful where you search for answers, filtering everything through Scripture.
I have had countless mentors in my life who give all their minds to Love the Lord and seek to understand the reasonableness of our faith. Some are in my family, some are Christian mentors in various sectors and vocations, some are authors and pastors who I have never met but whose words have strengthened my faith as they expanded my mind.
The Holy Spirit’s work of transforming you by renewing your mind can happen right now, at this time and at this season. So give yourself fully to learn; to grow; to ask; to seek understanding.
That is what higher education was originally founded to achieve. Let’s celebrate these ancient Christian institutions and entrust God to transform us by renewing our minds. During your degree, invest in expanding your mind. You have the space and the time to invest in your brain – time you’ll likely never have again. Invest now, transform your mind!
"Give yourself fully to learn; to grow; to ask; to seek understanding."
May
you love your time in university as you love the Lord with all your mind.

Back to Real Life
By Sam Hindmarsh
“This whole century is sensory overload” (“Dreams” by Shad). Every day, our senses are constantly being bombarded with sounds and images, all of it carefully crafted to grab our attention and secure our devotion. They are like voices constantly chattering, building up to a fever pitch, trying to make us into acolytes for their vision of the world. These voices fill our media, technology, and systems, and there’s rarely time to be still and process how they are shaping us. As Christians, we are to be formed spiritually, morally, and intellectually through reading the Scriptures and in prayer. In this busy, noisy world, we must take time away where we can listen for and be formed by the voice of God.
“If I’m adding to the noise,” then put down this magazine (“Adding to the Noise” by Switchfoot). I’m biased, but I think putting down this magazine and listening to that song would be a pretty good use of your time. If you decide to keep reading or find your way back here after the song ends, then I’ve got a story to tell you.
Earlier this year, I decided to try a little experiment and see if I could live without a computer or smartphone. Screens have a tendency to paradoxically absorb and divide my attention; they make me overwhelmed, distracted, and anxious. Our lives now revolve around these devices, and it’s hard to find time away. I had become like one of the prisoners in Plato’s famous allegory of the cave, chained to a post and watching shadows of reality playing before my eyes. I wanted peace, but I was hijacked into what pastor Mark Sayers calls the “ambient anxiety” of our globalized, digitally connected age that surrounds us (This Cultural Moment,
Season 2, Episode 2). I became deaf to the voice of God. So, I decided that for 7 months, I would rely on the public library and a little flip phone that could only call or text. I suddenly had time to read, write, and engage in relationships without distraction. It was refreshing, freeing, and rejuvenating! Like the prisoner who made his way out of the cave to see reality for the first time, I began to notice the world around me with fresh eyes. I started to hear God speaking to me again.
I haven’t mastered this. I still have to work hard to protect space in my life for God, but I now know the incredible difference it makes. If this is resonating with you, then it might be worth taking a full break from screens for a period of time.
Through this experiment, I learned anew that we need to take time apart from our devices so that we can be formed by “every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). Our digital devices are useful tools, and they improve our lives in many ways. They also make the brokenness of our humanity more acute, allowing us to see our hunger for God in sharp relief. The heartbeat of our age is a lostness and restlessness; pent-up anxiety is pulsating like magma below the skin of many.
God is sufficient to alleviate our desperate thirst. His Word is bread to our souls and the only antidote to our storms. His voice is the only voice that can bring peace to your heart and mind in this increasingly distracted, divided, and lonely world. Turn from your devices and the constant noise of this deceptive world and take time away to listen for Him.
CLASSROOM NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD
“I know I’ll look back at this year as one of the most foundational in my Christian walk.” — JARED BAYLEY
