Hello,

I swim every day. For most of the year, it’s the same group of regulars each morning at my local pool. The exception is January, when the pool is suddenly packed with well-intentioned New Year’s Ed, our Founder resolutioners. But by the time spring is sprung, it’s back to the old crowd again. Adopting a new routine or changing an aspect of your life is hard… especially if you’re doing it alone. What’s true when it comes to exercise is even more so when confronting more fundamental life changes, like getting back on track after a stint in prison. That’s why at COOK we are committed to employing ex-offenders who want to change their lives for the better (currently about 4% of our kitchen staff). The new routine, sense of worth, and the regular wage that comes with employment can be the cornerstone on which lives are rebuilt. Although it hasn’t always been easy, it has been incredibly rewarding and not just because we’ve found some wonderful, dedicated team members. It has challenged and reshaped our preconceptions and been a powerful reminder of how privileged we are and how much we all have in common. These are divisive times, but “we all breathe the same air”, as JFK put it. It is only through your continued support that we are able to make a difference and create meaningful, sustainable change in people’s lives. Thank you. We hope the meals we make in our kitchen will continue to delight, as well as free up time for you to enjoy with friends and family… or maybe even at your local pool.
