While adulthood remains a distant ambition for Dale and myself, over 18 years COOK has matured into a proper, grown-up business. These days we even do accounts – something I didn’t see the need for during our first few years, which seemed to surprise the bank manager in 1999 when I popped in to ask him for a loan to keep us afloat.

It’s 18 years since we opened the doors of our first shop in Farnham, Surrey. I was running it with my long-suffering girlfriend, now longer-suffering wife, Sophie. Dale was cooking in a small kitchen over in Kent with his sous chef, Spencer (still with us). We dreamed of being the world’s best ever maker of ready meals and of doing business differently from the crowd.
What else has changed in 18 years? I’m virtually bald, Dale is definitely fat. I have a fourth child arriving in May (which certainly wasn’t on the menu), while two of Dale’s four children, the lovely Caila and Carissa, now work beside us in the business. What hasn’t changed is the way we COOK – just like you would at home - and the fact we both still turn up to work every day with big grins on our faces. We’re lucky and privileged to be doing jobs we love. Thank you for making it possible.
