Dear Friends, UN Scientists are predicting a 3 degree rise in global temperatures before the end of the century. That may seem a long way off and many are saying “It’s not my problem”. However, as a family business with over 100 years of heritage behind us we feel we have a duty to play our part. A solar photovoltaic array will soon be gracing the whole roof of our shop at The Gardener’s Garden Centre in Knockholt which will generate around a third of the electricity required to operate the Coolings business at this site throughout the year. This complements the 50kW array that has been generating power at Coolings Lifestyle for seven years already. We will shortly be installing electric car charging points too.
As a longstanding business we look a long way into the future too. So, while some businesses look for a 3-5 year payback on their investments, we are happy that certain projects take longer if they benefit our business, the people who work with us, and the wider community. At a recent business planning & strategy meeting, I asked 20 members of our senior team “What will Coolings look like in 2071?” The answers were many and varied. Space does not allow me to mention them all here, but a précis will be included next time. Finally, as you are hopefully aware, we have partnered with Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex this year through the Coolings Family card (see page 31 for more information). Every time your card is scanned at the checkout, 10p is donated to this life saving cause. I’m pleased to say that, with your help, we’ve already raised £7,800! Whilst the rain of the last few months has led to lush growth, we look forward to more reliable weather so we can enjoy our gardens in the months ahead.
Following the extensive refurbishment to transform Coolings Green & Pleasant into Coolings Lifestyle, and the major resurfacing works in the plant display area at The Gardener’s Garden Centre, investment has continued at Coolings Wych Cross with several new outside display areas. We also hope to progress the new Rose Garden through the Autumn to help revive the heritage of roses that this nursery was famous for many years ago. Initial discussions have also been had regarding replacing the old shop building (formerly the potting shed) and the even older bungalow that has served as offices and staff room at Coolings Potted Garden in Bearsted.
We look forward to seeing you soon,
Coolings Chairman F RO M C O O L I N G S

Mini Chelsea Garden
with Coolings This Autumn’s Chelsea Flower Show 2021 will include a new show garden category; The Sanctuary Garden. These gardens will highlight the positive effect plants have on our health and general welfare. Lockdown has encouraged an estimated 3 million new gardeners to engage with their outside space, and here we pick on a few of the Chelsea themes in our own interpretation of a Sanctuary Garden.

Fragrance is a key factor in enhancing garden enjoyment. For example, foliage from herbs has a culinary and sensory use. We have planted a Rosemary ‘Miss Jessopp’s’ Upright and Tricolour Sage. For scented flowers, we use David Austin roses for their relaxed charm and ease. Roses such as ‘Olivia Rose Austin’ and ‘Roald Dahl’ are very healthy varieties and will repeat flower into Autumn.

The
Acer place
If there is one tree above all others that captures the spirit of Autumn then it has to be the Acer. These versatile trees come in a spectrum of sizes, but Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum varieties) are possibly the most ideal for creating Autumn colour in the garden. At Coolings, we grow hundreds of these plants each year on our own nursery.
Here are some favourite varieties for Autumn and Winter interest…

Growing Tips Acers are happiest grown in acidic (ericaceous) soil and in dappled shade. The best Autumn colours are achieved in these conditions. ● Ideal for smaller gardens as they grow well in large containers for a stunning focal point. ● Autumn is the best time to plant an Acer. ● Plant in a mix of equal-parts ericaceous compost and John Innes No.3. ● Good for a shady spot in the garden.

Mix it up with
Autumn P lanters
As the Summer draws to its conclusion now is the time to refresh your garden planters to provide colour through the cooler months. It is advisable to refresh the compost at this time and Coolings Professional potting compost is an ideal growing media to use.
It’s a great opportunity to mix colours and texture with a combination of plants.
Flowers
There is a wonderful selection of home-grown bedding plants at Coolings for you to choose from. Pansy, Dianthus, Viola, Cyclamen and Erysimum are popular choices, and heathers are a great addition too as they flower in Autumn (Calluna) or Spring (Erica).

Mini-Landscapes for Any Décor Indoor gardening with terrariums is a fun and attractive way to incorporate plants into your home décor. A terrarium is a transparent globe, or similar clear glass container, in which plants are grown, a bit like a miniature garden but for your indoor space!
Terrariums are very easy to create and maintain, and are brilliant for improving indoor air quality.
Guide to planting You will need:
A clear glass bowl, vase or geometric container Small plants of your choice with the same habits (do not mix cacti/succulents with ferns/foliage)
Step 1
Clean your terrarium thoroughly and then cover the base with a layer of grit or stones to aid drainage.
Step 2
Mix together the soil and activated carbon before adding to the terrarium, leaving space for your plants - using the pots from your plants as a template can be helpful for spacing.
Step 3
Use a cloth or small paintbrush to dust down the glass before covering the soil withyour chosen stones. Then carefully remove the empty pot if you have used one.
Top Tip
Grit Potting compost appropriate for your chosen plants Activated Carbon to remove impurities and bacteria Stones, rocks or glass pebbles plus decorative items Moss (optional) Cloth or small paintbrush
Closed terrariums (with a cork) will create their own humidity and microclimate and are therefore best suited for foliage and ferns. Cacti and succulents are best suited to open terrariums with good air circulation around them.
Step 4
Gently loosen the roots of your plants before placing them into the planting holes and pushing the soil and stones up to the base of the plant. If additional stones are needed you may need a small funnel to guide these into position so that they don’t get caught on the plants.
Step 5
Decorate with additional finishing touches such as shells, bark, glass pebbles, before giving your plants a little water.
Step 6
Position your terrarium in a bright position but not in direct sunlight. ES MINI-LANDSCAP

Wild About Wildlife
Our gardens are vital to wildlife, and with many species in decline, there are many things we can all do to make our outside spaces a friendlier environment for wildlife.
Provide a Safe Home
It’s such a joy to watch wildlife in the garden and if they can find a safe home, they may well take up residency in your garden. There are lots of wildlife houses to choose from depending on who you’re trying to attract. Whichever you choose, ensure that you place wildlife home in a sheltered, quiet area of the garden and if you’re putting houses in trees (for bats or birds), they should be placed in a north to east position to avoid the wettest rain and strong winds or sunlight. Tom Chambers Hedgehog House £37.99 (262679) Panacea Ultimate Renew Bamboo Contemporary Bird House £16.99 (294077) Tom Chambers Oakwell Nest Box £15.99 (202233)
Plant Pollinators
Don’t
Wildflowers have declined Forget dramatically in the British It’s a good choose pl idea to countryside along with the flower thants which th e year as roughout bees and butterflies that relied doesn’t ju pollination st ta on them, so bringing them back in Spring ke place an Summer. d to your garden is a great idea to attract wildlife back. Planting wildflowers is easy provided you chose an area where the soil is poor; fertiliser and compost will simply encourage vigorous grass and weeds which smother them, so be careful when planting. Get started with our Mini Meadow Easy Sow Mix 1.2 Litres Only £14.99 (229353)
Feed the Birds
Attracting birds into the garden is easy and we can do our bit by ensuring that they have enough food, especially over the Winter. You can hang a bird feeder or provide a bird table. Make sure feeders are kept clean and away from any predators and put out the necessary amount of food. Peckish Robin Seed & Insect Mix 2kg £5.99 (249681) Attracts robins to your garden. Peckish Peanuts 2kg £9.99 (249688) High in energy for many species. Peckish Sunflower Hearts 2kg £9.99 (249692) Attracts a wide range of small, colourful birds to your garden. Peckish Winter Warmer 1.7kg £5.99 (249676) High in energy and fat content, giving garden birds a helping hand during the cold winter months.
Top Tip
Encourage Insects
Insects play an important role in our ecosystem, most of them have specific roles to play and many of them serve as food for other species. The easiest way to encourage insects is to not be too tidy with your gardening. Leave wild patches if you can as these provide food and shelter for insects. A fallen log, or pile of sticks is an ideal home for stag beetles whose number are in decline. Leaving areas of longer grass is also great for providing safe havens for insects such as grasshoppers.

Are proud to be supporting Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex About Coolings and KSS Partnership
This year we have elected to support Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) as our chosen charity. Geographically, the charity is a good fit and we wanted to help support the charity’s life-saving work. We are supporting the charity in several different ways; firstly, for every swipe of a Coolings Family card in our garden centres, we are donating 10p to KSS which to date has raised £7,800. During the Spring we grew a special ‘Flying High’ bedding plant and in June £1 from each plant sold was donated to the charity raising £1,750. Coolings will continue to support KSS this year and throughout 2022, they never stop innovating and improving the care they can give, which means every donation they receive is vital.
Coolings Family has already raised £7,800! this year.
Key figures:
£5 could fund a pressure infuser, used when a critically ill or injured patient requires a rapid administration of fluids or blood. £11 could fund 10 sets of tuffcut shears, used when surgically opening a patient’s chest. £40 could fund a temperature probe cable to monitor a patient’s core body temperature. £120 could fund enough aircraft fuel for one mission. £704 could fund one set of the highly visible, non-restrictive, and fire-retardant uniform which allows our medical crew to remain safe and carry out their life-saving duties at the scene. £1200 could fund enough aircraft fuel to go out on 10 missions.

Scan your Coolings Family card at the tills and we will donate 10p every time!
