Welcome to Coolings

Dear Friends,

It seems the weather is never far from the news at the moment. The world recorded its warmest day in July this year, and in the South East of England, we endured the wettest March for 40 years and the dullest spring since 1910, leading to a slow start to the growing season. May however, turned warm and sunny leading to record sales, thankfully the majority of these sales came from plants. By adding plants to our gardens, the environment is greatly enhanced. Plants naturally play an increasingly important part in all our lives. Making up the majority of our diet, fuel, absorbing carbon dioxide, cooling the planet, supporting an incredible amount of wildlife and having a positive effect on our mental health and wellbeing.

The knowledgeable and helpful team are often cited as one of the main reasons that people visit Coolings, this is in no small part due to the level of education our staff have access to. At the annual summer ceremony over 200 students were presented with their certificates, this included four of our team. If you have ever considered learning about your favourite hobby there are a few spaces left to start this autumn. www.coolings.co.uk/courses/

Paul Cooling, whom many of you will fondly remember, never tired of saying the best time to plant a tree is now, and nuanced those words by emphasising planting in the autumn is the best time to plant. It takes advantage of moist, warm soil and gives plants more time to grow new roots and become less vulnerable to dry summers.

I note this summer the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), is urging British gardeners to get digging this autumn. Their research has shown only 8% of UK adults are aware autumn is the best time to plant.

As you may already know, this year we are proudly supporting Demelza Hospice Care for Children. For every scanned transaction of a Coolings Family card in-store, we donate 10p to Demelza at no cost to you. We also donated £1 from the sale of every Demelza Smiles

petunia throughout the spring. We are delighted that up to 6th August this year you have helped to raise £13,483 thank you!

As summer draws to a close it is time to revitalise your patio pots and baskets.
