Welcome to Coolings

Dear Friends,

Writing this welcome on a sunny afternoon in early April I am reminded that in a world of uncertainties, nature thankfully can be relied on to continue. The blooming flowers, unfurling leaves and bird song remind us just how good gardening is for us all.

Following the intense cold back in mid-December that damaged so many usually very hardy plants, I would like to take the opportunity to remind you of our 5-year hardy plant guarantee (extended to 7 years for Coolings Family members).

Many of you will know that we grow the majority of our plants, in fact around a million! These plants are all grown in the Kent and Sussex countryside and nurtured by an extremely experienced team of growers. Being grown in the local climate means that they are more resilient to our weather, but if you should have any problems, please do take us up on our plant guarantee.

This year we have taken the decision to hold our prices as close to 2022 as possible. Rising costs are a fact of life and are being felt no more keenly than in our weekly grocery bill.

Therefore, planting your own vegetables this year is not only prudent, but extremely rewarding. For those of you who would like more advice we have a number of informative videos with hints and tips on our website and as always, our team are on hand to offer help and advice to get you growing.

If you’ve not visited Coolings this year you will notice various improvements across our four sites in Kent and Sussex, and when you do visit be assured of a warm welcome from our team. Many of you will be aware we are now jointly owned by the staff and the Coolings family, providing future security for all to ensure Coolings continues to provide all that you need for enjoyable and successful gardening. When I tally up the years our team members have worked for Coolings, it is now well in excess of 1000 years, and in addition this year 30 new people have boosted our team for the spring and summer season.

Following such a wet and chilly start to spring, we expect this will result in a big rush from the pent-up demand over the next few weeks. Our own nurseries mean we will again confidently offer one of the largest selection of varieties and sizes of plants nationally for your garden, despite the anticipated pressure on spring season supply chains.

As well as choosing a plant that you love, you need to make sure it will be happy where you plant it. Ask one of our experts or you can find advice on most of our plant labels including ideal light and temperature levels.

Checking what type of soil you have in your garden will help you to choose the perfect plants and give them the best chance to survive and thrive.

Nuturing Your Existing Plants

The amount of time it takes for a plant to become established varies by plant type. Once established, your plants still need support but the level of support you need to provide may decrease. Continuing to feed your plants helps them thrive, stay healthy, and be more likely to survive fungal attacks.

Continuous release feeds remove the need for regular feeding as one application will feed your plants for 6 months. Each granule has a coating that controls and regulates the release of nutrients.

Sprinkle the recommended amount around the base of the plant, gently fork in the granules and water to activate.

Healing our Bodies, Minds and Environment

The healing and restorative power of gardens and gardening is a key theme in this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. No fewer than 12 show gardens are based around the theme including physical healing and recovery, mental wellbeing and healing of our natural environment. At Coolings we have long understood the positive power of plants and the outdoor spaces

we create for ourselves. In a world of increasing detachment from our natural environment, gardening helps ground and connect us to the beauty and joy that nature can bring to our lives.

Here we have highlighted some of the healing plants showcased at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show...

Healing

The Body

The key role that plants play in natural remedies for indigenous peoples is spotlighted in the Land of Healing garden. Featuring plants from the Korean mountains including shrubs such as Viburnum carlessi and Magnolia sieboldii.

The importance of a healthy diet is the focus of the Saville Garden, with growing your own food as a basis of healthy living as the key message. At Coolings we have a fantastic selection of vegetable seeds and young plants to help you grow your own!

The Mind Healing

In the Small Spaces category, The Restorative Garden features fragrant evergreen climbing Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) along with scented evergreen Myrtle (Myrtus communis). Mediterranean garden herbs including Purple sage (Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens'), and Trailing Rosemary (Rosmarinus offinalis 'Prostatus') are used to create a relaxing natural experience.

The Environment Healing

In the main show garden section, the Nurture Landscape Garden focuses on low carbon footprint and environmental impact. Tactile drought tolerant grasses such as Brezia media and Deschamsia cespitosa combine with border irisis for low-input gardening.

At Coolings, over 60% of the plants we sell are grown by us on our own nurseries so the “plant miles” from nursery to you are very short!

Tree planting is also featured heavily in this year’s show for their carbon capturing ability, with Chris Beardshaw’s, A Life Worth Living Garden, showcasing the beautiful Katsura tree (Cercadephyllum japonicum). This stunning tree smells deliciously of toffee apples as the beautiful autumn colours emerge.

Water is Life

When we think of gardens, we usually think of the colour green, but don’t overlook the colour blue for water. Water adds a soothing, calming element to the garden whilst also bringing in light, movement and sound.

Coolings Rose Garden

It was the vision of our late Chairman, Paul Cooling, to create a garden that celebrated the heritage of Wych Cross Garden Centre. Although only owned by Coolings since 2019, Wych Cross has traditionally been a specialist rose nursey with origins dating back to Victorian times.

With the practical skills of our Chairman, Gary Carvosso, and the horticultural expertise of our Wych Cross team, the garden tells the story of the history of roses whilst showcasing the vast array of roses from the tallest climber to the smallest patio rose.

In time, the garden promises to be a scent-sational treat full of gardening inspiration and we invite you to join us as we watch it grow into a rose haven nestled amidst the backdrop of the stunning Ashdown Forest.
