Welcome to Coolings
Dear Friends,
As gardeners, we share an innate sense of optimism, whether our horticultural endeavours were a resounding success last year, or you found blight and mildew, as I did, troublesome and frustrating from time to time. In spite of your outcomes, I am sure, like me, you are raring to go, spurred on by the thought of an early mild spring. With that in mind, we hope you will enjoy your exclusive Coolings Family member in this edition of our Cuttings magazine, in tandem with regular emails throughout this spring and beyond.
This innate optimism was highlighted at the recent Garden Centre Association (GCA) Awards where we were delighted to have two of our Centres listed in the Top 10 Garden Centres in the country!
The collective challenge of our environmental credentials is never far from the headlines. It is incumbent on us all to encourage people from all walks of life and ages to do whatever is possible to reduce our environmental impact, and, of course, this includes us at Coolings. Therefore, mindful of our environmental responsibilities, we continue to review how we operate day to day. Our award-winning pot recycling scheme has proved even more popular this year across all of our four locations. In fact, we are now recycling almost 100 tonnes a year of plastic pots! This is in addition to many tonnes of cardboard, metal and compost. Coolings continues to encourage other garden centres to adopt the same practice.
I read an article recently, that was written as a conclusion to yet even more research into the benefits of gardening for at least 1 to 4 hours per week. It stated the obvious for those of us already enjoying our national pastime - it referred to greater human resilience through influencing factors, such as emotional regulation, confidence, self-esteem and positive thinking.
Gardeners instinctively know that wonderful sense of satisfaction and fascination when planning, planting, and harvesting what has been grown at home or on the allotment. Not to mention, the benefit for the environment when planting oxygen-giving plants and nurturing our gardens in a way to encourage wildlife.
The fact that our horticultural courses have never been so popular suggests we can all take some comfort that the message is getting through.
With the above in mind, our absolute focus continues to be producing the best quality plants, backed-up with an industry-leading guarantee, many are grown by our own team in our three nurseries. With over 100 years of horticultural heritage, we really look forward to providing you with everything you might require for your garden. Our restaurant and cafés continue to offer delicious, freshly prepared food, to add to your enjoyment of Coolings.
On behalf of the whole team at Coolings (the owners of the business), we look forward to welcoming you soon.
Best Wishes,
In this issue, we are also looking at a peat-free future and what it means to gardeners.

Grow with us
No matter the weather!
You may think that only the most experienced gardeners need a greenhouse in their garden, but with our increasingly unpredictable climate and our shared passion for becoming more eco-friendly, a greenhouse is the perfect addition to everyone’s garden.
With a greenhouse, you can grow plants all year round and spend more time in your garden, even in the winter, which brings added health benefits by getting more sunlight and fresh air rather than being stuck indoors.
You can even save money by growing your own vegetables all year round and by overwintering or frost-protecting your less hardy plants. In addition, the season is extended by allowing you to sow your seeds earlier as well as growing tender vegetables, fruits, and plants that may not survive frost, cold winds or too much rainfall.
As well as already stocking a vast selection of greenhouse accessories, we’ve teamed up with Vitavia to offer a wide range of quality greenhouses for every garden.
From £935
There are models and sizes to suit every budget, from cold frames to ‘orangery style’ statement greenhouses. Delivery is usually within two weeks, and Vitavia have approved installers available in both Kent and Sussex.
From £2655
From £415
The full range of Vitavia greenhouses are available to order from all our centres, and display models are on show at The Gardener’s Garden Centre and at Wych Cross. Please speak to one of our greenhouse experts in-store for more information.

Looking to a Peat-Free Future
Going peat-free is a big change for the better and for our planet.
As part of our commitment to the environment, we have been reducing the amount of peat-based compost we sell and Coolings will be completely peat-free for the sales of bagged compost by the end of 2024. Our nursery production is also well on the way to transitioning to a peat-free future.
Peat-free compost has been scientifically developed with a mix of materials so it might look and feel a bit different to what you’re used to. It often contains wood fibres, topsoil, composted bark, and sometimes green compost from garden waste recycling.
Small changes needed to grow peat-free…
We are sure many of you have already had extremely successful growing results using peat- free compost, however, if you haven’t tried it yet, then some small changes are needed to ensure your plants survive and thrive once planted.
• Make sure you check before watering - peat-free compost can look dry on the surface but still contain plenty of moisture for your plants. Either dip your finger in to check before watering or if you can, lift your container or pot to check how heavy it is to see if it needs watering.
• Feed when needed - although most peat-free composts contain plant food, they typically only feed your plants from anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months. As there are often fewer nutrients in peat free compost, start feeding as soon as fruiting or flowering starts.

Love your lawn
Follow our Spring Lawn Care Tips to help get your lawn looking beautiful for the warmer months ahead.
As winter's chill recedes, it's time to get your lawn ready for spring.
• Aerate - make small holes in the ground, to improve oxygen circulation and drainage.
• Feed - with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer lawn feed. Stimulates robust growth.
• Mow - start in early spring with a higher mower setting then gradually lower. Helps nurture grass gently back to health.
• Weed control - by hand, or use a lawn specific weed killer. Remove weeds when first emerging.
• Overseed - revitalize thin areas. Choose the right seed mix for the local environment.
• Water - it's better to water deeply but less often.
• Check for moss and bugs - treat early to prevent escalation. Use treatments such as MO Bacter.
• Trim edges - leaving a neat finish.
