THE EXPERIENCE IS GROWING
Welcome to Coolings
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our summer edition of Cuttings. As I sit here and type, the weather continues to be a topic of conversation. Our gardens have had to contend with one of the warmest and wettest winters on record, and waterlogged soil has been an issue for certain plants. We grow the majority of our plants in our nurseries in Kent and Sussex, and we pride ourselves on the quality of our plants, therefore, despite the deluge, you can rest assured when purchasing a hardy plant from Coolings with our 5-year hardy plant guarantee (7 years for Coolings Family members), that we will replace any failed hardy plant purchased from us. Even the hardiest plants can struggle in extreme weather!
A committed and passionate team is vital to our business, and our recent recruitment day was one of the most well-attended we have ever held, and know from their experience and personalities that they will further add to our business and the Coolings experience.
Earlier this year, we were so pleased to see Coolings recognised again as industry leaders by the UK Garden Centre Association (GCA) for having one of the widest ranges of quality plants available in the UK, enhanced by a high quality of presentation and service. Our knowledgeable team also stood out nationally in the same in-depth audit for their passion for helping customers achieve the best in their gardens. We were particularly proud to be presented with a Garden Centre of Excellence Award for The Gardener’s Garden Centre and for the Best Plant Area at Wych Cross, but also for being listed as finalists in a number of other very strong and competitive categories. Achieving these accolades is thanks to the teams across all of our centres for their immense hard work and commitment to Coolings.
Many people I speak to are all too aware their knowledge of plants and cultivation is, at times, rather limited. We have helped hundreds of people further their knowledge in horticulture, having run horticultural courses for over 20 years. Whether your motive is to grow your knowledge for a potential change of career or just for fun, we can help. Our courses for the 2023/24 season sold out, but our 2024/25 programme is live, so please visit www.coolings.co.uk/courses for the latest availability or to enquire about future courses. The Coolings ‘Experience is Growing’ further and, as you will see from our dedicated supplement for Coolings Lifestyle, we have exciting plans afoot, extending the ranges we offer in-store to include a wider choice of interior styling items, garden furniture, BBQs, gifting and toys plus an enhanced selection of locally produced goods too, reflecting our passion to inspire you for all things home, both indoors and out!

Heritage Revived at Wych Cross
The new Pump Garden celebrates the restored water pump at Wych Cross, and the history and heritage of this special site springs back to life.
The original nursery pump has been painstakingly restored and now stands proudly on display in the corner of the Pump Garden. Dating back to the 1930s, it was the original pump that provided the water supply for the site. John Hacker, one of the previous owners of the nursery, had stored it away for many years after its removal, and we were lucky enough to be offered its return.
History of Wych Cross Site & The Pump
The site was originally the market garden for the neighbouring Roebuck Hotel. In 1939, a water supply was needed, so a well 70 ft deep was sunk with a further 400 ft of borehole. The pump was used to draw water into the tanks in the hotel and provide water around the site. At that time, the whole project cost a guinea a foot, over £38,000 in today’s money.
In 1949, a nursery was developed on the site by owner Major Stringer, which eventually separated from the hotel in the early 1960s after the Major passed away. Phil Pearson became the new owner, having worked on the site since 1949 and developed it into a retail nursery. In 1986, Jon Hacker, John Paisley and Ray Kennedy took over the reins. The nursery became famed for its specialism of growing a large range of roses, something that continues today since Coolings took ownership in 2019.
The Pump Garden
The garden, which originally formed part of the extensive grounds of the hotel, was lost and over time just became part of the nursery site without a trace of the once beautiful beds and borders.
Now, the revived Pump Garden, which covers about half an acre, not only highlights the site’s heritage, planted with roses that we grow ourselves but also features mixed planting to mirror the original designs from the past. And, instead of the pump now providing water for the site, we have a natural pond within the garden which fills from rainfall and the natural springs which we have flowing on site. The pond contains approximately 140,000 litres of water which is used for the nursery. The garden will evolve over time, so we hope you will enjoy what we have created and continue to visit and see the garden as it springs back to life.
The Pump Garden officially opens on 13th June.
To celebrate, special offers will feature in-store at Wych Cross from 13th-16th June.
The pump restoration was a huge undertaking, as it had to be relocated from its initial position, and although it isn’t a functional object, it allows us to reflect on the vast history of the site.

Combatting Climate Challenges
Looking towards a possible future of more climatic extremes, this year, many show garden designers have focused on creating gardens that are ‘resilient’ to periods of weather extremes, be they flood or drought. Building a resilient garden that can adapt to a changing climate can help mitigate these extremes. There are some simple things that we can all learn from the show and apply to our gardens.
Plant garden trees
Planting suitable trees in a garden is one of the easiest ways to add ‘resilience’. Dappled shade helps protect against periods of extreme heat; shelter helps protect against extreme cold; the trees’ water uptake helps mitigate periods of extreme wet.
Use drought tolerant plants in sunny areas
Don’t fight nature, in dry areas, only use plants that have adapted to live in these conditions. In the ‘Freedom from Torture Garden’, use is made of various Cistus shrub varieties that are robust and droughttolerant.
How to build a resilient garden
Silver Birch - Betula ‘Trinity College’
12 Litre £89.99 (188855) Combines white bark for winter interest and restrained growth for modern gardens.
Cistus ‘Silver Pink’
3 Litre £18.99 (185901)
A beautiful drought-tolerant hardy Mediterranean shrub which flowers throughout summer.
Create areas of water drainage
This is especially important next to areas of hard landscaping. In the ‘Flood Resilient Garden’, a drainage swale has been created and planted with moisture loving plants to help dissipate surface water run-off.
Beauty with productivity
Thalictrum
‘Hewitt’s Double’
3 Litre £12.99 (186743) Ideally suited to grow in areas with water run-off, loves moisture.
Growing home produce is both fun, environmentally responsible, and attractive. Try growing an apple tree. Plant a fruit tree with a more robust rootstock such as apples on MM106. The stronger roots will help water uptake in dry periods and the growth vigour can be restrained through pruning.
Apple Malus ‘Scrumptious’ (MM106)
12 Litre £59.99 (300706)
Delicious, self-fertile, and highly productive modern cultivar ideal to pick and eat.

Wise up to Water
In the world of gardening, there are two issues of growing importance - our effect on the climate and saving money. There is no better way to help solve both of these than saving water in your garden. By employing a mindful approach to using water in the garden, you’ll save money while helping save the planet.
Coolings has practical tips and solutions to help tackle both!

Water butts should be an essential product in everyone’s household. If every household in England collected one water butt’s worth of water a year (160 litres), we would save four billion litres of water nationwide a year! Water butts are also super useful in times of drought, hot weather, and hosepipe bans. Plants and vegetables love rainwater. It’s all natural, soft and without chemicals.
Water Timers
A water timer is a must in the gardening world. It makes your home more sustainable and saves you time and money. All while keeping your lawn and plants healthy. Connecting direct water to the lawn or base of a plant through leaky irrigation pipes uses less water while ensuring a higher quantity is absorbed by the roots. With a timer, you can schedule daily or weekly cycles for watering at sunrise, sunset or both. It also gives you peace of mind when going on holiday by simply setting up an irrigation system on the timer. Definitely worth investing in.

Traditional Irrigation System
A very traditional and sustainable irrigation system using the action of wicking to reach a plant’s roots. New this year is the Deroma AquaDO natural red clay terracotta pot that you bury into your pots, flower beds or vegetable gardens, fill with water then cover over with its lid - the water is slowly released over a period of 5 days. This system saves up to 70% water.

Water Storing Granules
Another great option for saving time and money on watering. Some of the watering granules we sell can absorb up to 80x their own weight in water. This is particularly useful for hanging baskets which need a lot of attention as they dry out easily.
Smart Aquagel

Mulching is nothing new, but its role in harvesting rainwater is often overlooked. When you apply Mulch to your garden, it helps to reduce evaporation from the soil. This allows the soil to retain more moisture in the summer, rain to penetrate the soil in winter, prevent weeds from growing, and protect plant roots in winter. Essential for hot and dry weather when plants need water to thrive. Certain studies even show that mulching can reduce water wastage up to 50%.
Soil Additives
Products such as Vermiculite and Perlite help to aerate the soil while simultaneously retaining key nutrients and water (helps maintain soil moisture), which it then releases over time. Ideal for seed sowing and propagation, however, it can also be very effective in the garden as it improves drainage, lightens the soil in raised beds and pots, and can be used as a mulch for many garden plants such as roses and tomatoes.
