Dear Friends, Anyone who has seen Sir David Attenborough’s “A Life On Our Planet” (released on Netflix last year) or the more recent BBC series, “A Perfect Planet”, could be forgiven for thinking that all life on Earth is doomed. However, like Sir David and many other leading environmentalists, I believe if we act now, our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will have a future to look forward to. With the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the end of the pandemic will (hopefully) soon be in sight. So, our next challenge must be to revisit all of our environmental credentials and encourage people from all walks of life and of all ages to do whatever’s possible to reduce our environmental footprints. Of course, this includes all of us at Coolings. Being proud holders of the Kent Excellence In Business Award (KEIBA) for our “Commitment to the Environment”, we feel that we are already in a strong position. However, we know that we could do better. And we want to be part of the solution rather than contribute further to the problem.

Rose Companions It’s no wonder Roses were voted the nations favourite flower with such a vast selection of fragrances and colours to choose from, but how do you keep your rose beds looking great throughout the year? The team at Coolings Wych Cross have put together their list of perfect rose companions to ensure your borders look interesting all season.

Whilst roses are our heritage at Wych Cross, we also have good stock of herbaceous and climbing plants!

Roses don’t like too much competition from other plants as they are hungry fellows. So it is important to choose planting partners wisely and consider spacing.

Clematis They won’t compete with roses but they’re ideal to grow up climbing and rambling roses. Especially those that only flower once as you can add colour with a clematis that flowers before, during or after the rose. Vitax Organic Rose Food 0.9kg Pouch £3.99

Lavender The colour often complements roses, they grow to a good height and prefer the same conditions. Moreover, they flower around the same time and bees love them.

Top Tip

Penstemon Better for colour towards the end of the season to brighten the bed when the rose is nearly done flowering.

Hardy geraniums These are great for underplanting roses and come in a range of colours. Geranium ‘rozanne’ is always a firm favourite to plant with roses.

If you would like a denser bed filled with roses, go for the same variety as there will be no danger of a more dominant variety taking over.

Erysimum This long-flowering perennial adds a lot of colour even between flowering, from the beginning to the end of the rose season.

Coolings was started in 1913 in Chislehurst and steadily grew over time. By 1990, the time had come to relocate, so we moved to the 14acre site at Knockholt, which became The Gardener’s Garden Centre. The site now has a production nursery, shop, restaurant (Arthurs), education centre, reservoir and more. At Coolings we specialise in plants, and our team of trained horticulturists are on-site to answer questions and advise on your selection. Our production nursery covers four and a half acres, and we grow over 65% of our plants here. We have over three acres of display area, full of the widest selection of plants in the south-east! In particular, we offer varied collections of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, bedding, trees and fruit trees, climbing plants, heathers, roses, acers, alpines and more!

So, to create a smoother shopping experience, we have replaced the 1400sq.m area of existing paving slabs with new paving blocks. THE BEGINNING

PRESENT DAY During peak times, the hard-working nursery team and machinery can pot up around 40,000 plants a week and transplant around 10,000 plugs an hour!

We grow plants in gutters suspended within the glasshouses to increase production space. So when we add over 6,000 hanging baskets we are growing 3 crops high! Our four and a half-acre nursery at Rushmore Hill produces over 200 varieties of roses, 300 kinds of shrubs, 600 types of herbaceous perennials, over 200 species of conifers, a vast range of trees and 80% of our bedding plants.

We have installed two reservoirs that hold 1.3 million gallons of rainwater. Pumps, gullies and guttering collect rainwater and runoff from on-site irrigation which is pumped back into the reservoirs for re-use.

Our team of horticulturists grow quality plants in our nurseries eliminating the risk of imported pests/diseases and reducing our road miles.

We promote environmental awareness, sensory planting and retail products that encourage wildlife.

These use carbon black pigmentfree polypropylene so can be put into domestic recycling.

Customers can return their plastic pots to the recycling point within the car parks. We collect, bale and recycle 25 tonnes per year across our sites.

We recycle over 90% of our onsite waste to ensure the absolute minimum is sent to landfill.
