Dear Friends, There have been many changes at Coolings over recent months, some of which have been very obvious and others less so. To improve your shopping experience, many of you will have noticed that our main shop building was re-roofed two years ago and has now been expanded. The greater insulation on the roof and walls makes for a warmer environment and reduced heating bills. The increased space will allow us to enhance our core gardening ranges including watering, propagation, tools and houseplants. At the same time we have broadened our ranges of garden lighting, gloves, bird-care and much more. Always focusing on plants, our shrub area has also been refurbished and the whole area has been opened up to make it more inviting, whether you are a novice gardener or an expert. Arthurs too has not been forgotten with new flooring in our orangery, new lighting and seating improvements. Behind the scenes, or to be more accurate, under the ground, new services have been installed to help future proof the business for the next twenty years. The disruption you may have experienced at our main entrance and through the car park over the winter months has resulted in a larger electrical supply, new gas main and waste water pipes, all laid to improve long term efficiency. It is often said that one of the best things about Coolings is the knowledgeable and
friendly team of people which, when including Coolings Green & Pleasant, now numbers over 200! After fifteen years of sterling service to Coolings in running the garden shop, Brian Archibald retired at Christmas and we wish him well on the golf course, in his garden and with his grandchildren. In his place we are pleased to welcome Andy Daly who joins us from another well-known gardening retailer and who brings with him many new skills which are already having a positive effect on the team. At Coolings Green & Pleasant there have also been changes and, with clever use of space for this season, we now have 42 sets of garden furniture on show, ranging from spacesaving two seat bistro combinations to grand dining sets for up to twelve. Willows Bird of Prey Centre on the Nature Trail continues to enhance the diverse selection of animals and wildlife for you to experience too. Whatever your interest in gardening, we have something to suit at Coolings and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Syringa vulgaris ‘Sensation’
This glorious scented lilac has beautiful magenta and white flowers in late spring.
Abelia mosanensis
The fragrant Abelia is a little known shrub but makes an outstanding compact garden plant. Loved by bees and really easy to grow. 8

The silver leaved Pineapple Broom loves a sunny sheltered location. Its yellow flowers have a fresh pineapple scent.

Using edible flowers in the kitchen has become very popular in the last couple of years and is a great way of linking home and garden. Add some flare to your cooking they can be easily grown by even the most amateur gardener.
Nasturtium
Both the leaves and flowers of these easy to grow beauties are edible. Flowers add a vibrancy to summer salads, Nasturtium sandwiches or chilled soups and have a delicious peppery taste. Simply plant as seed or buy as young plants. They will romp away!
Calendula
The common name Pot Marigold refers to this flower’s use in medieval pottage dishes. The petals make a colourful addition to salads, soup, scrambled eggs and dips. Incredibly easy to grow from seed or bought as young plants.
Chive flower
Chives
The flowers of this easy to grow herb are perfect for adding colour and onion flavour to liven up simple salads. The leaves are equally delicious.

Lavender
Lavender
Loved by bees and famed for their beauty and aromatic qualities, lavender is a musthave plant for a sunny well drained position. A great way of using lavender in the kitchen is to make lavender sugar. Take 1 tablespoon of fresh dry lavender and add 2 cups of sugar. Leave to infuse for a week in a sealed jar. Lavender sugar gives a lovely floral taste to cakes.

Pimm’s with Borage
The blue starflowers of borage have a delicate cucumber flavour and are perfect to enliven chilled summer drinks such as Pimm’s with mint leaves. Try freezing the flowers in ice cubes for adding to drinks! Eat Borage flowers sensibly as can act as a diuretic.

In nearly every outdoor space there seems to be at least one unattractive wall, fence or shed that would benefit from being screened by greenery. There are numerous climbing plants that could do this job, but only a relatively small number that are evergreen and retain their leaves throughout the year. Here our Plant Doctor Mark Reeve outlines his top choices.

This beautiful and vigorous honeysuckle has glossy coppery green leaves and attractive flowers from early to mid-summer.
Hydrangea seemanii
Deciduous climbing Hydrangea is commonly grown as it thrives in shaded locations. However this is a lesser known evergreen alternative that deserves far wider recognition. White flowers in summer and glossy evergreen leaves.
Sollya heterophylla
This lovely evergreen climber is a little on the tender side but is ideal for urban gardens in a sunny sheltered location. Alternatively it is fantastic for covering a wall in a conservatory. Sky-blue nodding flowers are born in profusion during summer and early autumn. A white flowered form is also available.
Probably the best evergreen Clematis. Grows vigorously to quickly provide screening and is covered in spring with beautiful scented flowers. Hedera c. ‘Dentata Variegata’
Mention ivy and many people shudder. However as a tough, self-supporting curtain of evergreen foliage that will grow almost anywhere it is unbeatable. This highly ornamental variety has large cream marginated leaves that shine throughout the year and act as a haven for wildlife.
Chocolate Vine Akebia quinata
This unusual large climber is best described as semievergreen. Excellent for growing over bushes and low trees, the chocolate coloured flowers have an attractive spicy fragrance.

Ship Shape Lawn... It’s Finally Spring Again, Hurray! Springtime is the optimum time to prepare the lawn for the coming months. If you take good care of your lawn it will not only look good, it will become an extended living space (and feel lovely to walk on barefoot). It can be backbreaking work but if using one of the products from Viano, your back might thank you for it. We stock three of their lawn care products.

the roots grow healthy and strong and that is the key to a good looking lawn. Recovery will feed the lawn for 100 days and can be applied from March to October. Also suitable for turf laying, it can be raked into the soil 4 to 10 days before laying or applied 8 weeks after laying.
Firstly Mo Bacter, an organic lawn fertiliser that feeds the lawn for 120 days and destroys moss without turning it black. It includes a little friendly bacteria that eats the moss. No moss to rake off as it’s all eaten! Mo Bacter can be applied from March to October.
The third product is called Bio Lime. Bio Lime will keep the lawn ‘sweet’ as it can become too acidic over time due to acid rain and long term fertiliser use. Bio Lime helps raise the pH levels, counter acting the acidity and creating a healthy growing environment. Best results are achieved if used in the autumn, but it can be applied from March to November.
If the lawn looks terribly stressed due to drought, being too wet, dogs and/or children running riot or over scarifying, then Recovery would be a better option. It helps
