welcome to Coolings Dear Friends, Some may regard the coming weeks as a stressful time but at Coolings we can help ease that pressure in many ways. Do please browse the following pages for numerous gift ideas, many of which have been especially sourced for those ‘difficult’ people who already have everything! With many years of experience, our Plant Team are now experts in helping you choose the ideal Christmas tree to suit your home. We also have a range of stands, pots and planters to choose from so you can display your tree. If you already have a tree stand, bring it along and we can even trim the base of your chosen tree to fit! As always, many of our traditional indoor plants such as Poinsettias and Cyclamen have been sourced particularly for Coolings by local growers. Long journeys across Europe endured

by many supermarket plants often cause plant stress which only manifests itself once the plant has been in your home for a couple of days, so it is reassuring that you will not experience any such issues with top quality plants bought at Coolings. Finally, I am pleased to report that after his successful visit to us last year Santa will be returning to his woodland hideaway on the Nature Trail at Coolings Green & Pleasant at the end of November (see page 17 for more details). As we approach the festive time of year the whole team at Coolings across both sites would like to take this opportunity of wishing all our visitors a happy and enjoyable Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Garden for November - February By Mark Reeve, Plant Doctor

4 Cuttings from Coolings

Mark Reeve

A plant has appeared near my bird table that has lilac flowers and strange spiky fruits. What could it be? This is almost certainly Thorn Apple (Datura stramonium), which is often found in bird seed mixes. It has probably germinated from that as it’s near your bird table. It is a member of the potato family and is poisonous, especially the fruit. The flowers are quite attractive and the plant itself is annual. If you are worried about having it in the garden then pulling it out is an easy way of control, but wear gloves when doing so.

My Solomon’s Seal plant (Polygonatum) always seems to get its leaves stripped every year by a greyish caterpillar. Is there much I can do about this?

This is a sawfly larva that is quite common on Solomon’s Seal. Control is either picking off by hand and disposing, or using Provado Ultimate Bug Killer when the damage is first seen. Be quick with either of these as they can very soon strip a plant completely!

I have access to some fresh stable manure but somebody told me it has to be stacked for a while so it will not rob the soil of nutrients. Is this correct?

It is true that fresh manure will use nitrogen as it breaks down in the early stages. You should ideally leave it to break down 2-3 months depending on the time of year (longer in cold weather) before use. There is a chance also if it is too fresh it could scorch the foliage of certain plants. Cuttings from Coolings 5

Roses

The Nation’s Favourite Plant by Terry Austin

Due to the surge in popularity of the nation’s favourite plant over the last few years, we are now stocking more roses than ever before. With more than 20 new additions this year, here are some of my favourites:

Rosa “Tranquillity” An almost thornless new variety with a light apple fragrance. • White and light yellow flowers • Light fragrance • Repeat Flowering • Height 4ft by 3ft

Rosa “Heathcliff” Named for the character in the Emily Bronte’s classic novel ‘Wuthering Heights’. • Excellent deep crimson flowers • Strong fragrance • Repeat flowering • Height 4ft by 3ft

Rosa “Lark Ascending” Named for the famous work by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Rosa “Boscobel” Named for the famous house in Bishopswood, Shropshire, where Charles II hid in the Royal Oak during the English Civil War. • Beautifully formed salmon flowers • Strong fragrance • Repeat flowering • Height 3ft by 2ft 6 Cuttings from Coolings

• Light apricot flowers • Light fragrance • Repeat flowering • Height 5ft by 3ft

Remember to incorporate Rootgrow, a mycorrhizal fungi, when you plant your roses. Not only does this help to establish new roses, it will overcome rose replant problems if you have had roses in the same location before. Always use plenty of compost as well as the Rootgrow when planting.

Christmas Trees by Jon Reburn What would Christmas be without a tree? There is nothing like a real Christmas tree to give your home a festive feel. Bringing a tree into the house helps connect us with nature and provides the perfect backdrop to this special time of year

H

ere at Coolings we always look forward to the Christmas tree season and serving our loyal customers who come back to us year after year. We are proud to sell only British-grown premium grade cut trees and have use the same trusted suppliers in both Kent and Scotland for many years. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure our trees are delivered to us direct from the plantation in peak condition. Traditional Norway Spruce gives you that classic shape and beautiful aromatic foliage so evocative of Christmas. Our ‘Gold Seal’ plants are the pick of the crop from the highly regarded Merrywood Plantation near Tonbridge. These trees are hand-dug for us to ensure freshness and quality. Our ever popular Nordmann firs have beautiful glossy foliage and the very best needle retention. This year we will also be offering a limited number of Noble Firs

which also have fantastic needle retention but a slightly more blue appearance. Trees will be available from late November and range in size from 1ft tall pot-grown plants, ideal for the smallest space, to spectacular 16ft tall specimens to grace the largest mansion! Please note that large trees of quality are again in very short supply this year so please help us by ordering yours early. Care for your tree by regular watering and keeping away from direct heat. We always advise customers to avoid the temptation to bring the tree inside too early! After Christmas you can return

your tree to nature by recycling it at Coolings Green & Pleasant on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th January 2013. You will also receive a voucher for a free slice of cake in Blueberry Café during January!

Top Tips for

Tree Decoration At Coolings Green & Pleasant

By John Poland

P

utting up Christmas decorations is never really a chore, it is one of those fun things the whole family can enjoy doing together and the end result is a glittering acknowledgment that the festive season has finally arrived. A little advance preparation and following a few ‘top tips’ will get you on your way, as will a steady supply of mince pies. (This has always worked for me!) I’m not a believer in ‘less is more’: if you can’t go a little over the top at Christmas, when can you? However, whether doing a tree or a garland over the mantelpiece, following a couple of basic principles will keep you on track. My first tip is to

try always to get as much contrast as possible to achieve the most visually exciting effect. Look for differences in size, shape, colour, tone and texture. As usual we have bought in a wonderful selection of decorations which will leave you spoilt for choice; from lovely child-friendly pâpiér mache and knitted creations to filigree metalwork and glass decorations. Tip two is to look for themes you can expand on. As always our ranges have developed and moved on, so you won’t necessarily have to start from scratch – and our friendly staff can advise you and help you get the most from your purchases. If you were thinking of investing in an artificial tree this year, we have some real stunners for you to choose from. My personal choice is the 7’ Western Cedar; at £235 this is excellent value, and as the branches are hinged you will never lose one again. I took the plunge a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back

12 Cuttings from Coolings

since – no dropped needles even when the tree went up in November and came down in February! The tip here is to allow plenty of time to fluff up the branches, as this will give you the fullest-looking tree. For a 7’ tree (either real or artificial) you will need a set of 200 lights for basic coverage, but the tip here for a really dazzling display is to use at least two sets. Sometimes, the multi-function on lights can be a little overwhelming; however, this year we are stocking a set from Konst-Smide (retailing for £39.99) which has a mixture of static and twinkling lights for a much softer effect. I always think that decorating your mantelpiece or fireplace to co-ordinate with your tree will deliver the real ‘wow’ factor. The more adventurous amongst you will start with a plain garland that you can decorate yourselves. Try grouping the decorative elements at one end as this can be very effective. However, if you are using a fairly traditional palette we have done the hard work for you with two beautiful pre-made garlands that can be used both inside and out. These are a mixture of blood-red Poinsettias, red berries and pine sprigs. 180cm Whistler Pine and Poinsettia Garland £36.99. Powered by a battery pack, you can add a little sparkle to staircases without the need for a power point nearby, or having

electric cables lying in wait to trip you up early on Christmas morning! My final tip is to spend time on a few finishing touches (and I don’t mean moving a few decorations to better places when everyone else has gone to bed – admit it, we’ve all done it!) However careful you are, there will always be a few gaps. Making a simple wired ribbon can be an ideal solution. I find that nine bows can be made from a standard roll of ribbon. We have a lovely selection to choose from by Gisella Graham this Christmas, with prices starting from as low as £1.99! It really can alter the look of your tree. (Gisela Merry Christmas Ribbon 3m £1.99 and Sheer Ribbon with pink dots £11.99). As an extra detail, make the tails really long and twist them around a cardboard tube, thereby creating a beautiful spiralled streamer. If this has helped to inspire you and you want to see how its done, why not book our ‘Breakfast with the Experts’ and join me for some behind the scenes tips? (see page 23 for details). All the staff at Coolings Green & Pleasant would like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Festive Season

for the

by Nicky Peto

T

he festive season is nearly upon us once again, traditionally the time for giving. Plants make a really pleasing gift at this time of year and whether you choose an individual plant or a planted arrangement the recipient is always grateful. We offer a complimentary gift wrap service to further enhance your selection. It is obviously best to know where the plant would be placed, as a chilly room would not be suitable for a Poinsettia which originates from Mexico where it grows like a weed. These very festive plants require warmth and good light away from draughts. Poinsettias come in a superb range of colours, ranging from pale cream bracts through to deep red, the most popular being scarlet.

Cyclamen The lovely Cyclamen is happiest in a cool light room or porch and will suffer if put in a warm room, where it will quickly collapse.

Orchids Orchids are also a very popular choice for a gift. With their exotic blooms, these stunning plants provide weeks if not months of colour. The most popular orchid is the Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid, which come in a huge range of colours with various petal patterns. Cymbidium Orchids make a grand statement with their lovely stems of waxy flowers; however they do need quite a bit of space to show them off to their best advantage.

Azalea The showy Azalea originates from eastern Asia where it inhabited cool humid mountain forests. It will last much longer if not subjected to too warm an environment. These lovely plants do need to be kept moist, never allowing the root ball to dry out.

Planted arrangements of indoor plants are always a good choice to give – we plant together those plants with similar requirements so they grow happily in harmony. If you require a specific colour scheme, we will be happy to plant it for you. If you need any assistance in choosing any indoor plant please do ask us and we will be happy to help.

Have you ever thought about

joining the Coolings team?

N

icky Younger joined as a Marketing Assistant in March 2012. “I joined the Coolings team six months ago on a part-time basis after spending a few years at home looking after my son. Because I had been away from a work environment for a while I was nervous about starting a new job with a new company, but I have been made to feel very welcome by all the staff at Coolings. Everyone is very friendly and went out of their way to help me settle in and make me feel part of the team. Coolings is the first company I’ve worked for that actually follows their stated values. I wanted to work for a passionate, forward-thinking company that genuinely cared for their customers and staff, and that is exactly what I have found. Everyone shares a ‘can do’ attitude, and I love the fact that staff are encouraged to input into the direction of the company through ideas and suggestions. I think Coolings has a bright future and I’m excited to be a part of it.” If you would be interested in finding out a little more about working at Coolings, please come along to our Open Afternoon from 2pm until 5pm on Saturday 1st December 2012 in our Lecture Room at Rushmore Hill. You will have an opportunity to meet some of our staff, ask any questions you may have and learn about our weekend and weekday vacancies for 2013.

Please call Jane on 01959 532269 or email janehopson@ coolings.co.uk to let us know if you will be attending so we have an idea of numbers. Alternatively, let us know your name and email address and we will contact you in the New Year with details of our vacancies. Full details will also appear on our website www.coolings.co.uk in January 2013.

Caring for Birds in Winter

by Sandra Califano Now is the time of year to give your feathered friends some high energy food to help them survive the winter months. Birds don’t hibernate like mammals do, so they puff themselves up and keep active to stay warm in the bitter cold. Expending all this energy means that birds need the right food to keep their strength up. Birdseed alone won’t do it – birds need fat and protein too

T Recommended products:

“Tom Chambers”

er Water Tower Feed £16.99

he obvious choice for this is suet, which we sell in a variety of forms, e.g. fat balls, suet cakes, etc. Some of the new innovative ideas from Tom Chambers are Suet Candles which can be hung from a feeding station. As the birds peck away at the suet, perches for them to sit on are revealed, helping clinging birds to feed well. We also have a variety of suet pellets which can be put into a peanut feeder. They come in four different flavours - Insect, Mealworm, Berry Nice and Nice Nuts. Nyjer Nibbles by Tom Chambers are a favourite of Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Siskins and Redpolls. Peanuts are another great food to offer birds in the wintertime. Peanuts have high protein and fat levels and are often an ingredient in suet products. They are especially loved by Blue Tits.

“Tom Cham b

ers” Winter Ener gy Feast (2 kg £6.99

For ground feeding birds Rockin’ Robin Feast and Fruity Ground Blend are good choices. For an easy all-inone feed which attracts lots of birds try High Energy blend or the new Winter Energy food. Finally don’t forget to supply fresh water. An easy way to do this is to use the new Tom Chambers Water Tower. While nest boxes offer a safe and warm escape from the cold, natural plant covers are great for birds seeking protection from natural predators such as birds of prey, so make sure you have plenty of evergreen shrubs established to act as the perfect hideout. Be sure to clean out old nests from houses to help reduce the possibility of parasitic bugs surviving the winter. It also allows birds the opportunity to roost in a clean house. Serve up a feast for your birds this winter to ensure they’re kept fed, watered, warm and in healthy condition, vital for breeding in spring

Winter

Weather Essentials

During last winter we had more than our fair share of snow, so why not make sure you’re better prepared this winter. Sun, showers or snow, Coolings has everything you need for protecting your precious plants during the harsher winter months

Keeping Dry

Wrap Up Warm

While it is important to keep your garden watered, plants in pots are vulnerable to excessive moisture caused by winter rain. Help to solve this problem by raising pots up to increase drainage, and also prevent the stains and water damage that occur when a pot is place directly on your patio or decking. Try our range of decorative ‘pot feet’ available in terracotta starting at just 60p each or go for a vibrant colour with our 3 pack glazed pot feet starting at only £1.99. If your pots are slightly larger then try our decorative wheelie pot stands. With handy wheels starting at £16.99, your pots will glide with ease when you come to move them. And after all the hard work is done, sit inside in the warm and dry and start planning your garden for next year!

Frost can easily penetrate the sides of pots and kill off roots, especially those that are made out of terracotta. Fortunately there are many ways of safeguarding them so they make it through winter. Simply move plants that are at risk to a frost-free place until the danger is over - a shed, garage or greenhouse is ideal. If you don’t have space indoors for a pot, or it’s too heavy to move, wrap the outside of the container with a sheet of bubble wrap (£2 per metre) or hessian (£3 per metre), ensuring it is held securely in place with garden twine. Use sheets of horticultural fleece (£1.59per metre) to protect the plants. This can be a little time consuming, so if you’re racing to protect against early and late frosts, why not try the range of Fleece Jackets from Haxnicks? Available in small, medium and large they simply slip over the top of the plant and pot (£7 per set).

Off to Bed Putting the garden to bed for the winter is mostly a matter of cleaning up and covering up. As autumn progresses and temperatures drop, hardy plants prepare for dormancy. Clear out blackened stems and foliage from flowers to prevent the possibility of disease over the winter. For more top tips have a look at the garden tips from our resident Plant Doctor, Mark Reeve, on Page 4. 30 Cuttings from Coolings

New Year

Nature Trail

on the

At Coolings Green & Pleasant

by John Poland As we head through autumn in all its multi-hued glory and move towards winter, the birdwatcher in me starts to feel a sense of anticipation in the knowledge that many exciting species of birds are on their way to over-winter in this country – and perhaps on the Nature Trail

W

inter is an ideal time to nature-watch. Cold and sunny, brisk winter days are magical. With few leaves on the trees everything is in clear sight: at this time of year many animals become bolder in their search for food as the shorter days mean they need to be active for longer. Also, there is no need for the early starts of summer – but you still get a lot of the rewards! Getting out and about on a regular basis really helps you to get to know your patch; I was lucky enough last year to see a male Crossbill (a rarity in these parts) on the Nature Trail. It was here all too fleetingly and I would have missed it had I not made a point of popping down to the Trail each morning. I would have missed the badger tracks in the snow

as well! After the festive season what better way to lose the extra pounds than a spot of regular bird-watching or badger-tracking? In fact, why not delight someone special this Christmas with the gift of an Annual Pass to the Nature Trail? There are many migratory species of bird which turn up on the trail over the course of winter. Some will just be passing through, others will stay all season long if you put out food and water for them. Our bird hide is always really busy and all the feeders empty in a day! If you start feeding wildlife, you will need to continue year-round as we do: the animals will learn to rely on you. At Coolings Green & Pleasant we are running a ‘25% extra free’, year- long promotion on some of our seed ranges to encourage you to look after your feathered friends. Many of you who joined our ‘Friends of the Nature Trail’ scheme at the start of last year and reaped the benefits of unlimited visits will need to renew your subscription in the coming months – we will be sending out e-mail reminders! In the meantime, Happy New Year and Happy Trails!
