Dear Friends, Writing this welcome on a sunny afternoon at the end of March I am reminded that, whilst governments come and go and political upheaval causes heated debates around the world, nature carries on regardless. Spring flowers are blooming and birds are singing – I suggest we all put our troubles to one side for a while because it’s a wonderful time to be out in the garden! I’ve commented before that, as gardeners, we are naturally optimistic and we look forward to the coming seasons. One recent event though caused me to look back with reflection, that of my father’s passing in February at the age of 84. His funeral at the end of March at St Nicholas Church in Chislehurst marked the end of an era that involved so many people from all walks of life and from many different parts of the world. He is now at rest in the family grave with his parents, Arthur and Miriam, and his beloved wife Shirley, less than a mile from where he was born at ‘Little Farm’. A more complete tribute is on pages 4 and 5. Also in this issue of ‘Cuttings’ you will find many reasons to visit Coolings during the coming months. One of the most exciting of these is the addition of Koi Water Barn, having relocated from Chelsfield. This company, and the family behind

it is widely known as one of the leading koi and water gardening experts in the UK and is highly regarded around the world, catering for top end hobbyists through to first-time goldfish owners. This new addition dovetails well with Weald Aquatics, the aquarium and pond fish specialists based at Coolings Green & Pleasant. At Coolings we are no strangers to global fame and already this spring we are expecting two groups of German horticulturists and a group of South African nurserymen who are combining their visit with a day at the Chelsea Flower Show. The bigger event though is on Tuesday 3rd September when we play host to over 200 delegates of the International Garden Centre Association as part of their week-long tour of the South East of England. Around 17 different countries will be represented at this event, and as part of our welcome we have arranged for an aerial display from the Spirit of Kent Spitfire (based at Biggin Hill). Put the date in your diary and make sure you visit the Garden Centre for this special treat! Whatever is happening in your own life at the moment, in my view it can always be improved by gardening, so in anticipation of a rewarding and inspirational season ahead, we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Michael Cooling 13.10.34 – 28.2.19 Michael was the only son of Arthur and Miriam Cooling who lived in the town of Chislehurst, where Arthur was the postmaster and had built up a small but successful market garden in his spare time. Having trained at the Kent Horticultural Institute in Swanley and completed his National Service in Germany, Michael joined his father in business, which was then called ‘Little Farm’. Michael had many

new ideas and was an early pioneer of soil-less composts, often comparing notes with Arthur Bower. He corresponded with George Ball in USA who was achieving great results with hybrid seed of colourful annuals. Early experiments with growing shrubs in large tin cans (salvaged from the local hospital) were quite successful too. These early containers allowed easy self-service by the customer and could be successfully transplanted all year round. The early 1960s saw the first Garden Centre in Chislehurst, when Michael was allowed to take over one end of a small greenhouse. The initial stock of pots, string, bamboo canes and John Innes compost cost 37 pounds and ten shillings, and was viewed with great scepticism by his father. Michael was an early member of the Horticultural Trades Association - Garden Centre Group (which went on to become the GCA) and he was one of the UK delegates at the first Garden Centre Congresses held in Germany. In 1961 Michael married Shirley and they had two sons, Paul (54) who is married to Carol and has two children, and David (51). By 1988 it was clear that the one-acre site in Chislehurst was too small to sustain the thriving business and it was sold for housing. This allowed the purchase of Robinsons Gardens, a fourteen-acre site in Knockholt, whilst still having sufficient funds to build a new shop a year later.

4

F RO M C O O L I N G S

Always one to re-invest the profits, never borrow money, and develop people who were keen to learn, the business continued to thrive. Michael was very proud to collect the first ever Horticulture Week “Retail Nursery of the Year” award in 1997 and this was followed in 2005 by the GCA Garden Centre of the Year. Coolings remains the only business to have twice been voted the Best Garden Centre in the UK by readers of Which? magazine. Over the last 20 years Mike and Shirley gradually withdrew from running the business to enjoy travelling and spending time in their own garden in Chislehurst. The team that Michael put together, continues to run and develop the business and this legacy

now comprises three sites over 45 acres. More than 200 families gain some or all of their income through working at Coolings. Shirley Cooling died in February 2018 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease for four years. Michael passed away after a short illness in February 2019. United in peace once more.

Bizzies are Back!

We are excited to announce that Busy Lizzies (Impatiens) are back! This year our on-site nursery team have grown a new mildew Words by Jon Reburn resilient series which we are offering our customers for the first time.

Impatien ‘Orange Star’

This popular and versatile summer bedding plant all but vanished from our gardens after a new strain of fungal mildew arrived in Britain in 2011, wiping the plants out. Now, after years of work, the plant breeders have developed a healthy breakthrough bedding Impatien variety and we will be growing all seven wonderful colours (orange, orange star, red, rose, violet, white and mixed) which are available in packs of six. 6

Mixed coloured ‘bizzies’

Bizzies planted with hostas and hydrangeas

Unlike most other bedding plants, bizzies delight in shade as well as the sun and create lovely colourful ground cover. Great companions with hostas and hydrangeas.

Hostas and ‘bizzies’ are good companions to brighten shaded areas

For a full on statement effect, bizzies will always ‘WOW’ when planted on their own in pots or as part of a mixed arrangement of plants as they are hard to beat for continuous colour. Feed throughout the season with an all-purpose plant food (such as Miracle-Gro all purpose soluble plant food) to ensure flowering from early in the season until the first frosts. We will also continue to offer the larger growing New Guinea Impatiens which are also mildew resistant and available in packs and one litre pots!

Are you proud of the love and care that you have put into your garden?

Why not share it with us by entering into the Kent Life Garden of the Year Awards? Kingswood School celebrating their win in 2018

At Coolings we love nothing more than seeing the fruits of your garden labour and this year we are proud to be sponsoring this event so we can do just that! Don’t worry, there are no lengthy forms to fill out, you can enter online at www.kentgardenawards.co.uk with a few words about your garden and some supporting pictures, and just click on ‘submit’. It is a great opportunity to show off and inspire others with the ideas you’ve created in your own outdoor space. The competition is open to all gardeners, as well as primary schools and community gardening projects, and there are some great prizes for the winners and runners up of each of the three categories:

Amateur Garden of the Year The judges will look for an owner’s strong connection and involvement with their garden, a garden that has been created and maintained solely by the owner will have an advantage. It can be large or small, contemporary or traditional in style; judges are looking for the love and care that has gone into its creation.

Primary School Garden of the Year The judges are looking for a garden that is maintained mostly by the children, although some adult help is allowed!

So, you need to get planning as entries must be submitted online by 7th June 2019 and shortlisted gardens will be visited by judges between the 15th and 29th June. The winner of each category receives a £200 Coolings Gift Card, a set of gardening tools, framed personalised certificate and a pictorial feature in Kent Life Magazine. Two runners up receive a £50 Gift Card and a framed certificate.

They are looking for the number of gardening activities that the children are involved in, any cross-curricular activities and evidence of eco or sustainability related projects. Children’s sketches and descriptions of what the garden means to them are welcomed.

Community Garden of the Year The judges are looking for a community garden that enhances the lives of the people as well as the flora and fauna in the locality. The garden should be supported by efforts of volunteers in the community and engage with everyone who lives there.

We look forward to meeting all the winners at the awards ceremony and afternoon tea held here at Coolings Gardener’s Garden Centre on 19th September 2019. For more information and how to enter contact Sarah Sturt 07809 551221 email: sarah.sturt@archant.co.uk or visit www.kentgardenawards.co.uk

Climbing and rambling roses make an elegant, beautiful covering for nearly any horizontal or vertical structure. They are an excellent way to bring height, colour, fragrance and abundance to the garden.

Words by

Alastair Gellatly

Climbing and rambling…what’s the difference? Generally speaking, ramblers are much more vigorous and produce masses of small to medium flowers that are a spectacular show, but most do not repeat flower – they are good for growing into trees and covering pergolas, garages or sheds. Climbers generally have larger, repeat flowering blooms and are better suited for growing up walls, trellises, over arches and obelisks.

Here are some of our favourites… Rosa ‘Madame Alfred Carrière’ An incredible grower boasting a strong fruity fragrance. This (almost thornless) climber will go on flowering its lovely clusters of creamy white, sometimes flushed soft-pink, double blooms for months at a stretch. Suits any aspect and all soil types.

Rosa ‘Scent from Heaven’ Its name says it all. Voted rose of the year in 2017 mainly for its strong, rich fruity fragrance and peach-orange buds that open to lush, semi-double, apricot-orange flowers. Bred in Britain and hailed as being very diseaseresistant. To recap…this climber looks good, smells delicious and requires minimal fuss and bother.

Rosa ‘Scent from Heaven’

Rosa ‘Compassion’ The light pink flowers tinted with coral pink coupled with its strong, sweet fragrance will not fail to warm hearts. This repeat flowering climber loves full sun to part shade and is ideal in north, south east and west aspects.

Rosa ‘Laura Ford’ A charming miniature climbing rose with semidouble flowers opening bright yellow at first, becoming lemon-yellow edged with pink from early in the summer through to late autumn. It also has a sweet fragrance and reaches a height of 1.8 metres, so excellent for patios and obelisks.

Rosa ‘Compassion’

Rosa ‘Albertine’ This vigorous rambling rose will give you a dramatic display of reddish-salmon buds opening to loosely double light pink blooms. Wonderful strong, rich fruity fragrance, with strong dark green leaves. Its growth is branching and bushy and definitely has the ‘WOW’ factor. Rosa ‘Laura Ford’

Genius Geums f you think everything that is worthwhile requires oodles of hard work, it’s time to get to know Geums – the easy going perennial with all the frills and an abundance of charm. They produce neat, compact foliage and present gardeners with dainty, rose-like blooms that begin in early spring and continue through the summer.

Words by

Becky Ellis & Sam Smith

Use them in sunny borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens or as ground cover, plus they make wonderful cut flowers. These plants are not fussy, and will perform in any pH as long as the soil is moist. Geums will light up your garden with warm-toned flowers that can range from yellow to orange, to pink and scarlet. Deadhead them after flowering and they will produce a prolific and reliable display. They really are a no brainer!

COCKTAIL SERIES This new range of Geum are strong and colourful, just like your favourite cocktail. They all have fuzzy, dark green pinnate leaves and erect stems holding the semi double, ruffled flowers. This heady combination includes ‘Tequila Sunrise’ (yellow/apricot), ‘Banana Daiquiri’ (lemon) and ‘Cosmopolitan’ (cream/ pink). Unlike your preferred tipple, these won’t leave you with a hangover and you can enjoy them every day!

They will look great mixed with other vibrant colours or foliage plants. Planting them against purples, blues and dark reds really make them shine. On Trial:

Weedkillers

We all know that prevention is better than cure, particularly in the fight against weeds. In an ideal world we would all be digging, finding and removing the offending roots of perennial weeds during the winter months and taking preventative measures such as mulching to ensure minimal weeds grow back. However, like a lot of good intentions, we don’t always manage to pull them off or even if we do, they are not always 100% successful. It is in this scenario that we find ourselves reaching for the best bottle of weedkiller to do the work for us.

But which one is the best? To help us find the answer, we asked some of our Coolings customers to test three popular brands of ready to use weedkiller during the summer of 2018. Here is what they found… (N.B. To make this trial as fair as possible, we chose three popular selling ‘ready to use’ (RTU) weedkillers that all had a ‘plus/extra/ tough’ element to them. All three were ideal for use on unwanted garden vegetation (beds, borders, paths, patios, driveways etc), but not for use on lawns unless intending to kill the grass. Testers were asked to begin the trial from the 1st May 2018. The star ratings given are based on 5 stars being Excellent – 1 star being Poor.)

Resolva Pro Weedkiller RTU (1 litre) £5.99 The majority of testers found this product to be quite effective at killing weeds rapidly after only one application and as the product states, visible effects were seen by the majority of testers within 24 hours (leaves turning a brown tinge and looking forlorn). However, one tester saw no visible effects what-so-ever after use (including on their area of nettles). As with the other products tested, weeds did grow back in the same area within a few months. Value for money: Average rating 2 ★★ Ability to kill weeds: Average rating of 3 ★★★

20

F RO M C O O L I N G S

Recommend to friend? ✗ The majority of testers said no they would not recommend to a friend and the majority said they would not buy again themselves mainly due to the fact that the trigger spray leaked when using so it was constantly dripping. Plus, the majority found that Resolva Pro didn’t perform quite as well as against the cheaper Job Done Tough. As one tester had no impact in their garden from the product, they will definitely not be buying or recommending to others.

Job Done Tough Weedkiller RTU (1 litre) £5.49 Testers applied this product across a number of places including a gravel drive, in-between large paving slabs and on the patio. Testers used the product mainly to treat perennial weeds such as dandelions and unwanted grass. One tester used on brambles. The majority of testers found that one application on common perennial weeds was enough to kill the weeds within a week of application and even found that there were signs of the product working (browning) within hours of application. However, one of the testers noted that weeds did grow back in the same place within several weeks. In the case of the brambles, our tester had to use the product for several days consecutively to see results but was very effective. However, some brambles did sprout again after a time and needed further application. Value for money: 5 ★★★★★ were given across the board for this product stating that is was a very fair price considering the comparative results and highlighting that it was the cheapest of the three products.

Ability to kill weeds: Average rating of 5 ★★★★★ All testers were happy that the product worked very quickly and eliminated the weeds in question for a good amount of time.

Best Buy!

Recommend to friend? ✓ All testers agreed that they would absolutely recommend Job Done Tough Weedkiller to a friend and they all said they would buy again with one tester stating they would look out for this product specifically.

Before

After

Round Up Tough Weedkiller RTU (1 litre) £5.99 As with the other products, our testers used on a mixture of gravel drives/brick paving and patios and also around the base of decking. All testers agreed that Round Up Tough was effective at killing rapidly (within a week) and one tester said they started seeing results (looked lacklustre) within 24 hours. In most cases, the product was only applied once and made a big difference to to the amount of and size of weeds within the trial period. Most weeds were kept at bay for several months before they grew back completely.

Value for money: Average rating of 3 ★★★ Ability to kill weeds: Average rating of 4 ★★★★ Recommend to friend? ✓ The majority of testers said they would recommend to a friend and buy again themselves, but only if Job Done Tough was not available. The majority of testers based this decision on the fact that they had similar results with this product and Job Done Tough but Job Done Tough was cheaper.

BEST BUY: Job Done Tough Weedkiller easy to use, worked quickly, gave the longest lasting effects and was the cheapest on test. F RO M C O O L I N G S

Solar powered lights are renewable energy: they consume nothing except free charging power from the sun. They are not affected by power cuts and most importantly, cause no harm to the environment. Plus, there is something immensely satisfying in watching the lights turn on all by themselves, lighting up the path and patio every night during the summer. Technology is improving constantly to give us better, brighter and more efficient products for the garden that are easy to operate and maintain. The batteries will most likely only need changing every couple of years, and wiping the solar panel every now and again will allow for a better charge from the sun, but that is all. To add warmth and create a cosy ambience, use low lumens (similar to watts, lumens measure the strength of the light), warm white or coloured lights.

Harlequin Wind Spinner 213cm, £39.99

To aid security and light up entrances, driveways or gardens, use super bright white lights with high lumens. For extra security, there are even solar lights with sensors. Another way to show off your garden is by using ‘up-lights’ to illuminate trees, sculptures, shrubs or other objects.Your garden can be made to look amazing.

Penny Farthing 150cm, £19.99

Wind spinners can also add a little something extra. The effect created when lit up and spinning is spectacular and fascinating to watch.

Steve is a career horticulturist who spent almost 30 years teaching horticulture at every level, from amateur up to degree. Appearing in the TV series Plant Life and Garden Doctors in the early 90s led to a second career writing books, magazine articles and the support booklets for the hugely successful BBC series ‘Ground Force’ along with wife Val (also a qualified horticulturist). Between them they now have over 50 gardening books to their names. These days, Steve answers live questions on alternate Sunday mornings for BBC Radio Kent, as well as making guest appearances on BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey. ‘My Favourite Bomb-Proof Roses’ by Val Bourne 2pm-3pm

Val is an award-winning garden writer, photographer and lecturer. A committed organic gardener all her life, she writes for many publications including The Daily Telegraph and the Hardy Plant Society Journal, she judges RHS floral and dahlia trials and loves growing roses. As an organic gardener, she has to choose roses very carefully because they have to be healthy, vigorous and disease-free, all grown in her Cotswolds garden at Spring Cottage. Val is going to talk about her top ten roses and how she uses them in her planting. Combinations include herbaceous peonies as the perfect partner, both have fullypetalled flowers so they don’t sustain insects. Surrounding roses and peonies with insect-friendly plants like astrantias, scabious, well-behaved hardy geraniums etc. helps to keep them healthy and gives flower from May until October. Val will also cover pruning and feeding.

‘A Lifetime of Growing Plants’

by Peter Seabrook MBE 6.30pm-7.30pm Writer and broadcaster Peter started with the BBC Radio Home Service in 1965. He has presented gardening programmes on BBC 1 (Pebble Mill at One), BBC 2 (Gardeners World), Chelsea Flower Show, WGBH, Boston, (The Victory Garden coast to coast in the States for 20 years) and has been the Gardening Editor for The Sun for over 40 years. Two of his books, Complete Vegetable Gardener and Shrubs for Your Garden (the latter set to music and premiered in Sydney Opera House), have been published in more than ten languages. In his session Peter will share his secret to successful gardening.

The garden centre and shop will be open to evening session ticket holders for after-hours plant sales from 5pm until 6.15pm. Each session lasts for 1 hour, followed by questions and answers. Tea, coffee and water refreshments are available and included in the ticket price.

Frankenstein

Ali Baba & the Forty Thieves!

Brilliant young student Viktor Frankenstein discovers how to endow dead organic matter with life itself. It is one thing to stitch together an anatomically complete organism, but quite another when it becomes a living, breathing creature that shows intelligence, feels torment – and demands answers of its creator. Will Viktor escape the clutches of the Monster by creating him a wife as he demands?

Young Ali Baba stumbles across an enchanted cave when he overhears the magic words that open it: “Open Sesame!”. Inside the cave he finds untold amounts of gold and jewels, and takes some of it home to show his wife. What will happen when the Robber King comes looking for the missing treasure supported by an army of 40 angry thieves?

This brand-new musical production features a fully orchestrated musical score, a cast of professional actor singers, spectacular stage effects, puppetry and flashes of the wickedly dark humour for which Illyria is justly celebrated. The show contains mature themes but is suitable for all ages 5+.

Packed with cliff-hangers, larger-than-life characters, and laughs galore. Plus, there’s lots and lots to join in with – and the most magical cave you’ve ever seen! Perfect summer fun for thieves and vagabonds aged 5+.

Coolings Summer Showcase 2019

Celebrating the works of the masters… You will be pleased to know that our much-anticipated Summer Showcase opens on Friday 28th June and runs every day until Sunday 28th July. This year we are taking our inspiration from the works of some of the great masters and their famous works of art. The plants that feature in our exhibition are all grown by us here at our nursery and are carefully selected for their popularity amongst our customers, growers and staff at Coolings. This annual celebration really is a great opportunity for you to see some of the best of what we’ve grown (over 300 plants to be more precise!) in their prime. This spectacular, colour co-ordinated 14,000ft² display is always a beautiful sight and well worth a visit. This year, our exhibition will support the British Heart Foundation in memory of Michael Cooling (father of current Chairman, Paul Cooling) who sadly passed away on 28th February 2019. Michael joined his father Arthur Cooling in 1955 to form the partnership trading as Coolings Nurseries until his retirement in 2003.
