Neighbourhood House, Community House or Adult Learning Centre, whatever the name, these places are the heart of the Knox community. More recently referred to as Learn Local organisations, we provide social, educational and recreational activities within a welcoming and supportive environment. There are five Learn Local organisations in Knox. Coonara Community House offers a large number of qualifications in Community Services, Children’s Services, Leisure & Health and Disability up to Diploma level. Subsidised computer classes run each term. Coonara offers workshops on gardening, cooking and getting ‘back to basics’. Short courses provide pathways to employment and build learner confidence. Other programs include a food garden, a community newspaper and many volunteering opportunities. www.coonarahouse.org.au

This class will still be at a basic level, but the next step on from what you have managed with plenty of support. Bee Keeping Club
Meetings are held monthly on the second Wednesday of the month 7.30 - 9.30pm. Annual membership $35 per person or $50 per family. Prana Meditation
Prana (a Sanskrit word) means life force or life energy. This gentle guided meditation helps to clear stagnant energy and stress .You benefit by improved mental activity, vitality, energy, relaxation and sense of peace. This meditation technique provides tools to help manage physical pain and illness and cope better with stress. It is suitable for beginners. All you need is a willingness to experience deep relaxation and wellbeing. It is not recommended if you are pregnant or under 16 yrs. Masterchef for kids
If you are 8 - 12 years old and have always wanted to learn to cook, this class is for you. Create yummy simple meals, slices and snacks that you can eat or take home on the day and learn the skills to be able to cook independently. Gully Gardeners
This group meets at Coonara Community House on the first Thursday of every month from 2.00pm – 3.30pm. Share gardening tips and listen to guest speakers. Afternoon tea provided. Gold coin donation. 3rd April - Preserving and sharing your harvest. Bring along recipes and samples of preserves, jams and sauces that you have made from your garden produce. 1st May - Josie will show you how to arrange a vase of flowers and greenery from your own garden. 5th June - Make a mosaic stepping stone for your garden. 3rd July - Guest speaker to talk about salvias.

Community Gardening with Kate Potter
Keen or aspiring gardeners are invited to assist with the Coonara community garden every Monday morning from 9.00am - 12.00pm. Experienced gardener and apiarist, Kate Potter, will share her gardening knowledge and welcomes volunteers to assist. 7
Learning to Eat Again Project Coonara Community House has gained funding through the Knox City Council Community Development Fund to hold a series of workshops aimed at providing self-help for those who have food intolerances and allergies in their family.

Feta, Mascarpone & Greek Style Yogurt Take home your own 3 products, and make and eat Ricotta on the day as well. This will be a full day course. Cheese can be made using cow, goat or sheep’s milk, if you wish to bring your own this will need to be pasteurized on the day. Otherwise all ingredients are supplied. Please bring lunch to share. Camembert, Gourmet Feta, Sour Cream & Ricotta Making Camembert, sour cream, cream cheese and Ricotta is easy once you know how. Cheeses to be made on this day are Camembert, sour cream and cream cheese. You will take home your own 3 products with you. Pete the Permie workshops (cont.)
Fruit Tree Classes
Pete has developed four individual fruit classes that fit together and cover much more than the past two in natural fruit tree management. Each will be $85, but we will offer a discounted cost of $290 for participating in all four of these workshops. Get a copy of Pete’s book (2nd edition). Students to bring lunch and suitable boots as there will be a tour of the collection, looking at real examples from 1000 varieties onsite.
Design an Edible Food Forest Garden
Acreage or a backyard, the principles of the forest can help us design a low work and balanced forest of fruit and food for humans. Learn how to select and use varieties that will fit each level, including dwarf trees. Saturday 17th May $85 ($290 for all four workshops)
Heritage Fruit Trees
Looking at grafting old heritage varieties onto quality rootstocks which can dwarf the tree and create ones that reduce pruning and maintenance. We will also look at the 1000 apples, 150 plums, 110 figs we once had. Where are the now? Monday 9th June $85 ($290 for all four workshops)
Biodynamic Fruit Tree Management
This is our yearly field day where we make and apply tree paste and look at the collection and how to manage with absolutely no chemicals. Sunday 27th July $85 ($290 for all four workshops)
Winter vs Summer Pruning
Focus on the advantages of pruning at the correct time to control disease, fruit & tree size, will also cover espaliers includes practical examples. Sunday 3rd August $85 ($290 for all four workshops)

Coonara accepts EFTPOS, credit cards, cheque, cash and direct payment into our bank account. Box 7041 Upper Ferntree Gully 3156. Please include a note with your contact details and the course you have chosen. Refunds & concessions Courses require minimum numbers to proceed. If we cancel a class you will receive a full refund. If you withdraw from a class at least 48 hours prior to the commencement you will receive a refund less a $10 administration fee. Within 48 hours of the class commencement no refund can be given. Concession fees apply to some courses for those on pensions and health care cards. The refund policy for accredited training differs from the above and is advertised on the enrolment form and our website. 12
