THE Cooroy community is invited to a second consultation to discuss the design of the replacement police facility for Cooroy. Local citizens are being asked to have their say on the design of the new $4 million police facility, which will replace the current split-level station on the corner of Maple and Gar netMinisterstreets.for Police Mark Ryan and Queensland Po lice Service Commissioner Katarina Carroll met with the community in July to discuss initial designs for the new facility, which will replace the existing station built 55 years ago. Cooroy Police Sergeant Mal Scott said all the feed back from the community on the initial design was provided to the project manager.“Wegathered all the feedback and provided it to the project manager. They’ve gone away and will come back with a redesign of the station based on that feedback. “The general consensus from the first consultation was that the police station needs to have more of a heritage look rather than a modern look. “As the building at the gateway to our CBD, many feel a heritage look would be more in keep ing with the character of Cooroy.”Whilethe external design is up for consul tation, Cooroy officers and Queensland Police Property and Facilities team are working together on the facility layout which will include an office for the officer in charge, a general duties day room, an equipment store, a holding cell and an inter view“Policeroom.stations have to be purpose-built with inter view rooms and cells, so while the exterior design can be tweaked a little bit, the facility has to be a pur pose-built police station,” Sergeant Scott said. Construction on the replacement facility is scheduled to start in early 2023 with completion due inThe2024.project manager, architect, Queensland Po lice Property and Facilities team and local police offi cers will be at the second community consultation being held on Tuesday 23 August at 2 pm at the Cooroy Hotel.

Camped up in Inverell, New South Wales recently we got talking to a couple who pulled in beside us, and were gobsmacked when they said they were from Cooroy (hello Pam and Arthur). And that they love the Cooroy Rag (of course!). Later, chatting to a gentleman running a boutique shop in Glen Innes, we learnt his 84-year-old mother who lives on the Sunshine Coast did her first teaching stint at Pomona State School in the 1950s.Often when we meet people and this question of “Where are you from?” is asked of us, when we say we’re from the Noosa Hinterland, the jealousy is palatable.Forgood reason – we really do live in the most beautiful part of the world. And we’re looking forward to getting back to it, even for just a little while. We’ll be holidaying at home again for the next month so my talented guitar-playing husband Matt can perform at the Gympie Music Muster with bandmate, harp-playing Bob Abbot. Meanwhile, I’ll be attending the Mingle with the Mayor ball on 3 September with the Rag team. The ball is a wonderful fundraiser and I had the privilege of attending last year. I’m looking forward to wearing the same dress again – no need to buy a new one –I’ve still got so many miles to get out of this one! I’m also looking forward to catching up with dear family and friends and getting back among my beloved community. So, see you then! THREE times a week, volunteers for Cooroy-born charity, Uniforms 4 Kids (U4K), meet to sew items of clothing for children, repurposing used police uniforms.Theaim is to provide clothes for children in crisis centres, refugees, indige nous communities and all children in need. Since its inception in 2017, the 35-plus local volunteers have sewn approximately 23,000 items of clothing. This incredible feat will be acknowledged by Queensland Police Com missioner Katarina Carroll and Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan with a special presentation at Palm Lake Resort on 20 September.CooroyU4K founder and board member, Yvonne Pat tinson, said it is an amazing achievement.“U4Kstarted in Cooroy and is now widespread, with so many people sewing and enjoying each other's company.“Ourclothes have been sent to so many places, making so many children happier, safer and support ed.”Queensland Police Ser vice Commissioner Katarina Carroll said as a proud ambassador of Uniforms 4 Kids, she is honoured to be part of such a significant achievement.“Itisfantastic to share this partnership and support Uniforms 4 Kids to donate more than 20,000 items of clothing for children in need. "That is an incredible feat, especially when you consider the time and effort that goes into repurposing the clothes that are then donated.“Thank you to all the incredible sewers who give up their time, as well as our members who donate their old uniforms for this good cause."Yvonne said Uniforms 4 Kids’ beginnings in Cooroy were humble, commencing with a handful of home sewers.“Wethen secured the Cooroy CWA hall but this meant hauling all the machines, materials and uniforms to the premises every week as there was no storage.“Luckily for us, we found a new home in the basement of the Uniting Church in Cooroy.“Sadly, in the recent floods, it received significant storm damage and all our supplies were either ruined or had to be dried out and repaired.“Acallwent out to the community, to all the councillors and all the local politicians, and a generous lady allowed us to use her studio unit for minimal rent. However, the studio was situated out of town and with many of our volun teers being elderly Cooroy residents, the drive to the studio proved too much for some.“Sothe never-give-up at titude of some of the ladies and their husbands saw the church premises cleaned up. Together we dried it out, painted the walls, ceilings and furniture, and generally cleared and cleaned it all up.“Now we are back there, happy and content, and hopeful of no further heavy rains.”Through all this, the Co oroy ladies have soldiered on making clothing and enjoying each other's com pany.“There are three groups in Cooroy. The original group of about 15 ladies including four or five who have been with the organisation since it started, meet at the Unit ing Church every Friday. Two groups at Palm Lake Resort meet every Monday and Tuesday morning. “Our ladies have made new friends and have a new purpose in life. We know we are blessed to have Uni forms 4 Kids in our lives,” Yvonne said.

Taken on the very first day of U4K in Cooroy, Margaret Coventry and Jenny Rooke cut patterns at the CWA hall in 2017 and today’s Palm Lake Resort sewing group (from left) Marie Hansen, Jeanette Reichman, Margaret Willis, Yvonne Pattinson, Wendy Groves, Dianne Boswell, Pamela Tebbutt and Margaret Nolan. Prior to 2017, there were just a few ladies sewing in their own homes.

This year, 67 competitors lined up to compete in the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge and 48 school students competed in the Zinc 96 Prince and Princess Race for the 43rd King of the Mountain event on Sunday 24 July. BY SERGEANT MAL ANOTHERSCOTT busy couple of weeks for Cooroy Police with two businesses broken into. However, it’s pleasing to note that good alarm systems and strong locks worked together to deter the offenders and they left empty-handed but they still caused substantial damage. Forensics Police have gathered some strong evidence, and together with Cooroy street safe footage, offenders from the Gold Coast have been identified. Investigations are ongoing and I hope to give some good news in future reports. Whilst the Cooroy crime rate is below other areas we are certainly not the sleepy little town that some locals like to refer to us as. Businesses and residents, in general, should regularly check their security systems and ensure no easily acces sible items are on display and live by the saying “lock it or lose it”.

A NEW King and Queen of the mountain have been crowned at this year’s King of the Mountain event. With a brand-new course, Mark Bourne was crowned king of the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, with a time of 31:24, and Lee Cleary was crowned queen, with a time of 40:39.

The Cooroy Blue Light Dis co enters its fifteenth year of operation and continues to attract children from all around the Noosa Hinter land. All discos are strictly supervised by Cooroy police andWevolunteers.arealsoin the plan ning stages of once again sponsoring a Cooroy Junior Police Officer award at the upcoming Christmas in Co oroy street event on Friday 9 December. This is to in spire good behaviour in Co oroy kids around town, with special police caps, badges and other goodies awarded to junior officers who pledge to always be good Cooroy citizens. Further information will be available in coming months and if any business wishes to become a sponsor for these awards, please contact me. Also, on the funny side, Cooroy Police were recently called to suspicious activity in the new Hinterland Ad venture Playground when a concerned community member reported men dressed as Santas loitering in the park. Upon investi gation, police determined all was good. The local Cooroy ambos were having a family get-together with the theme being “Christmas in July”. Obviously, some of the ambos look a little rough dressed as Santas. Cooroy Police continue to have high levels of community support so once again thank you to all who take the time to say thank you, which I’m very pleased to say happens a lot.Take care out there. Well, we’ll keep waiting

IT has been 12 months since the “liquid gold” was discovered in the heart of Cooroy.InAugust 2021, acting on information that a nonde script concrete tank in Apex Park was not sewage but fresh water, the Cooroy Rag, with the help of three local stalwarts (pictured), lift ed the lid on a decades-old mystery. The Rag confirmed the concrete tank was not for waste but was a water well, first sunk in 1914 by the Wide Bay Co. Butter Facto ry and used during its years of operation from 1931 to 1975.Asample water test sent to a local pool company identi fied the water as clear, with a good pH and no traces of chlorine.Cooroy is renowned for its subterranean water with a spring at the foot of Cooroy Mountain, and ideas about what to do with the old well and its pure water started flowing in thick and fast. The majority of the com munity said they would like to see the well water put to good use with suggestions such as turning the well into a tourist attraction or estab lishing a water station. But Noosa Council is still assessing its heritage significance. The Rag was advised it can be time-consuming for council’s heritage unit to undertake the required research and assessment.Sowhilecouncil continues to assess the well’s heritage significance, we’ll continue to … well … wait.

DearThankEditor, you, Cooroy Rag, for highlighting the issue of ‘as of right’ approval for a developer to build a 20-unit complex on flood-affected land at 11C Church Street, Pomona without residents being allowed a formal say in the matter (Cooroy Rag, 6 July 2022). Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg.Under the 2020 Noosa Plan, 35 character hous es in Pomona have been assigned a medium den sity zoning where multiple dwellings may be erected on a single block with a wave of the hand by Noosa Council. No public notifi cation is required for code assessment.Councilrefuses to consid er other vacant blocks at Pomona that could be more suited to multi-unit devel opment without threatening the characterful housing stock. At the same time as the council acknowledges Pomona’s ‘living heritage’ status, it threatens that status through the planning scheme provisions. It now intends to devise additional ‘confidential planning scheme amend ments’. Pomona’s character and feel are in danger of being hollowed out. It is an underwhelming prospect. What’s required is a reca libration of Noosa Council’s policy in respect of Pomo na and the other hinter land towns, best effected through a Local Area Plan. The next five years will be critical for Pomona involv ing development pressure impacting lifestyle, housing (including seniors’ living) and the local economy, as well as nature-based tourist visitation and locals want a say in the future of their town and they want to see results happening on the ground. Brian PomonaO’Connor the year, Council is taking applica tions for the next round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and Commu nity Project Grants. These grants help local commu nity groups, organisations and clubs deliver a range of community projects and events. The projects may include, but are not restrict ed to, events or festivals, programs and building, maintenance or infrastruc ture projects. The RADF grants are open to artists, organisations and busi nesses to help them deliver arts-focused projects, and this round the maximum grant amount for a RADF grant has increased to $7,500.00. Experts have advised that much of the damage is below the surface and restoring the area is a complex task. Residents were given an up date at a specially convened information session at Black Mountain Road recently. The project is a priority for council and all tenders will be fast-tracked. Dear Editor, As operators of the local Cooroy, Tewantin-Noosa and Marcoola Community Bank network, it was a pleasure to be able to again sponsor the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge for this year’s King of the Mountain race and see the excitement this event brings to the faces of participants. Many runners come from far and wide to participate and the races definitely have a positive flow-on effect on the local economy.Giventhat we have recently fielded questions from customers asking if our Community Bank Co oroy branch is here to stay after the recent closure of our Pomona branch, now is an opportune time to let our wider community know the answer to this is a resound ingAsYES!customer banking preferences change, our network must change with them, just as people’s preferences as to how they watch and pay for movies at home have changed. The closure of the Pomona branch was a necessary part of a longer-term growth strategy for our network to ensure that we can contin ue to fulfil our vision to feed into community prosperity, not off it. With your support, our strategy will allow our branches to continue to build on the $1.9 million to date that we have provid ed to Pomona King of the Mountain, local surf lifesav ing clubs, the Noosa Coast Guard, the Cooroy Horse & Pony Club Gymkhana, and the many schools, sporting and art clubs across our footprint.Doingyour banking locally with us enabled this to happen. In short, you need a bank for the products and services you need – and we need your banking to help us make a difference. You may not think who you bank with matters. But it does. For our customers, their banking is making a real difference. We’re not going any where. We’re committed to your community and when you choose to bank with Bendigo Bank good things happen in your community. Trish Radge, Chair Sunshine Coast Com munity Financial Services Limited Community Bank

THE Noosa Shire Regional Arts Development Funding round is now open, with peo ple encouraged to apply and make use of this opportunity. Artists, if selected after meeting the criteria, are in a position to grow their creative arts practice with the potential to showcase their work while engaging with the localThecommunity.NoosaShire is widely celebrated as a flourishing place recognised for its ex pansive array of arts, culture and heritage, where resi dents and visitors alike are able to be fully immersed in the colorful diversity on offer. There is a growing body of evidence that demonstrates the benefits of engaging in creative activities – makes people feel less lonely, results in better physical and mental health, and leads to happier and healthier lives. Our thriving local arts scene is well supported by the Noosa Council Cultural Plan with a clear focus on building cohesive and resil ient communities that are creative and informed. Arts and cultural industries are good examples of eco nomic assets. They provide jobs and stimulate local economies while fostering civic engagement, building skills, and enhancing oppor tunities for youth. This leads to a more connected population where diverse groups can share common experiences, which is critical for understanding others.Adding to this is the posi tive partnership between the Queensland Government and Noosa Shire Council to support the ongoing develop ment of local arts and culture through the RADF grants. The Noosa Council sup ports development opportu nities by providing one-off, short-term, project-based financial assistance through the Regional Arts Develop ment fund. If you are interested in this round of funding, please con tact Noosa Council Arts and Culture Community Develop ment Officer on 5329 6558 to discuss the project and the application process. Together we strengthen communities.

This popular event draws visitors from all over the Coast for a drive to spot a few ‘crows, before stopping to eat at one of the cafes in Imbil or watch the steam train roll into Amamoor and Dagun.Thefestival, which began in Maleny and has been held almost every spring since the late ‘90s, is now hosted by the community group Mary Valley Artslink. It features scarecrows from Kenilworth in the south and throughout the Mary Valley via Brooloo, Imbil, Kandan ga, Amamoor, and Dagun. Scarecrow categories include child, traditional, ar tistic – and a new category, Pro Crow. Made from scrap metal or any other durable recycled items, these quality scarecrows need to be over sized and original. For Mary Valley residents wanting to register a scare crow for this year’s festival, entry forms are available auwww.maryvalleyartslink.com.atanddueby1September.

Owner Lisa Pree said this is not always the case. “It is a common miscon ception that professional peels must always be aggressive solutions in high percentages that result in excessive visible peeling, scabbing and downtime to obtain quick results. “This may be appropriate for specific conditions such as extremely thickened or asphyxiated skins and severe scarring perhaps but is not necessary for the majority of patients looking for skin rejuvenation.”

Skin clinic clears up myth

“As with all non-invasive skin treatments, clinical peeling treatments need to be administered in a routine manner. Better results will be seen if the treatment is performed every two weeks (mild treatments) or four weeks (advanced treat ments) for a series of six treatments.“Onceafull treatment course has been completed it is recommended that a maintenance program be implemented – these treat ments should be performed every six to eight weeks. “It is also recommended to continue with hydrating medi-facial treatments in between clinical peeling treatments for the most superior results.” Phone 5442 6239 or www.lakeridge.com.auvisit 5556

A COOROY beauty and skin clinic are out to clear up a myth regarding professional peels.Lakeridge Health, Beauty and Skincare Clinic is clear ing up the common miscon ception that professional peels must be aggressive to obtain quick results.

Lisa said professional peeling treatments that are gentle on the skin, infusing it with beneficial nourishing and strengthening ingredi ents, achieve faster, more dramatic outcomes. “If the goal is healthy, beautiful skin then the low dose approach is usually the best choice. To opti mise results, professional treatments must be support ed with a customised skin maintenance program. Lisa said clinical peels have been clinically proven to significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, diffused redness, age/ sun spots and hyperpigmen tation, enlarged clogged pores, breakouts, flaking and dry skin.

With Sirah Robb Director and Principal of Wythes Real Estate STEPHEN Koukoulas, managing director of Market Economics and past economic advisor to the prime minister recently spoke on the outlook for housing.Henoted there is evidence that inflation growth is starting to ease. Interest rate rises are starting to slow the economy; therefore inflation will start coming down and the interest rate peak will be considered reached, possibly as soon as in six Stephenmonths.pointed out that although Australians have the highest levels of household debt in the world, our net wealth has never been higher and we should keep history in mind when predicting the future. There have been four examples of the RBA hiking interest rates in the past; this is the fifth (all by 2.5 to 3 percentage points). After one year, house prices had a small increase; after two years, a moderate increase; and after five years, a big increase. Other factors at play included a strong labour market. Banks worry about higher unemployment when interest rates rise but at the moment, the labour market is good. Just ask any employer looking for staff right now.

A tight rental market, like we are thatinvestment.markettheexperiencing, currentlyalsosupportscontinuationofagoodasitisgoodforMrKoukoulashighlightedallthesefactorsput a floor on the house price cycle when a drop starts to be seen. The 30% drop Armageddon scenario heard in some media reports seems unlikely. Slow, short-lived drops are more likely. Without being blindly optimistic, looking at the facts and other factors that come into play as well as interest rates, it would seem that a 5–10% drop in certain parts of the country is more likely by mid-2023, with Sydney and Melbourne to be impacted the most. Anecdotally, our figures reflect a slowing of the incredible growth we experienced over the last two years and an increase in time on market; however we are yet to see a reduction in the average sale price of our agency.
