The Copernicus Marine Service provides reference data and information on the physical and biogeochemical state, variability and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas. Products are free of charge and open to all, accessible via marine.copernicus.eu. The Copernicus Marine Service is implemented by Mercator Ocean International on behalf of the European Commission.

T-MEDNet – Tracking the effects of climate change in the Mediterranean Powered by T-MEDNet
Overview The T-MEDNet initiative aims to set up a fully operative and cost-effective Marine Protected Area climate change observation network in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems, based on collaborative approaches. T-MEDNet’s mission is to foster pan-Mediterranean cooperation and support climate change monitoring, build databases, facilitate data and information sharing and capacity building and contribute to national, regional and international monitoring and reporting activities.
To summarize, T-MedNet provides information on: Past, present and future in situ temperature conditions • Provides insights into coastal thermal regimes and seasonal stratification dynamics over extensive spatial and temporal scales for the first time in the Mediterranean. •
Analyses warming trends and marine heatwaves in nearshore surface waters (0-40m).

Develops more realistic 21st-century coastal warming scenarios.
•
Biological impacts Provides insights into mass mortality events affecting coastal benthic biota over extensive spatial and temporal scales for the first time in the Mediterranean.

Analyses relationships between T-conditions and biological responses, including episodic events, in particular the onset of mass mortality events, but also changes in distribution, behaviour and phenology.

The MarCOSouth Western Indian Ocean Coral Bleaching Monitoring Service Powered by The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research
Overview The Marine and Coastal Operations for Southern Africa (MarCOSouth) project is one of four projects under the marine and coastal thematic areas within the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa programme. The MarCOSouth project, initiated in 2018, aims to promote the sustainable management of marine resources, improve marine governance, and stimulate the growth of the blue economy in the South and East African regions. The project has produced several co-designed and user-focused decision-making services based on locally optimised satellite observations, in situ observations, and model-based forecasts.

Here, we present the Western Indian Ocean Coral Bleaching Monitoring Service, which provides satellite-derived risk and monitoring products for coastal and nearshore ecosystems that are high-value, ecologically vulnerable natural capital or exploitable resources. The service was co-designed by earth observation researchers and developers from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in collaboration with domain experts and consortium partners from Coastal Oceans Research and Development – Indian Ocean (CORDIO) East Africa.

The Earth Observation products used in this service are the United Kingdom Meteorological Office’s Operational Sea Surface Temperature (SST) & Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA) products provided by the Copernicus Marine Service. These data are post processed following the established methodologies of the NOAA Coral Reef Watch. All satellite products are updated daily and produced using regionally optimized SST climatologies. The user interface offers an interactive map-based product viewer with clickable pixel information, a selection of graphical virtual stations at key monitoring sites, links to external resources (e.g., coral bleaching alerts) and in situ bleaching observations from CORDIO East Africa. This service will enable area-based assessment and calculations of coral health in East Africa, giving users the capability to monitor satellite-derived thermal stress and duration, in addition to the potential for assessment in change over time through the application of historical monitoring records of reef health.

From open data to marine knowledge: A service for augmented data access and reproducible data analysis Powered by Marine Analyst
Overview The Marine-Analyst.eu is a novel platform for searching, viewing, processing, transferring, advertising and disseminating marine spatial data from numerous data sources. Launched in October 2020, it is powered by the WEkEO data and information access service (DIAS). The Marine-Analyst.eu provides users with access to data and key analyses for the location of their choice. It offers a personal dashboard where each user can collate the reports created for the chosen datasets [See: Single data access and analysis]. By generating on-demand data analyses for any location, the platform is able to address multidisciplinary challenges, for example: •
Maritime spatial planning: It represents a solution for coordinating decision-making when allocating identified areas to specific activities, by considering and partitioning a basin as a whole, including its ecological functioning and the activities it supports. (for example: zonation based on essential biophysical ocean parameters (such as Chl-a and Kd) (Marine Copernicus), human activities inventory (EMODnet) etc. (Ref: MSP challenge at the Ocean Hackathon Brest 2020)

Climate change: Addressing climate change not only requires better science; it is also crucial to inform journalists, interested citizens and the wider public. The Marine-Analyst facilitates access to information and transparent analyses. (for example: sea surface temperature trends and anomalies. (Marine Copernicus), Coastal erosion (EMODnet) (Ref: Climate change at my Beach challenge at the Hack the Ocean Hackathon November 2019).

Marine protected areas: Park managers benefit from simplified access to various bulletins comprising key information for the management of their MPA (for example: MPA bulletins, (Marine Copernicus forecast), Vessel density hierarchical clustering and statistical analysis. Benefits for users The Marine-Analyst platform provides access to data from a number of major marine data providers. It is aimed at: • Research institutes. • Public authorities. • Private companies. • Environmental organisations. • Journalists. • Interested citizens. • Students. It does not require any programming skills.It is an “open web platform for the achievement of accessible, reproducible and transparent environmental science” (i.e., the platform embodies the FAIR principles of open environmental science). All of its sources* are available in a Github repository for execution in a virtual Binder environment, allowing expert users to tailor any available analyses to their needs.

TURTLES: Effects of swimming behaviour and oceanography on sea turtle hatchling dispersal Powered by German Geodetic Research Institute - DGFI-TUM
Overview The knowledge gap regarding the early life-history of sea turtles during the “lost years” continues to hinder research and conservation at this critical life stage when mortality rates are the highest. An oceanic model was used in combination with a Lagrangian particle tracking framework to simulate and identify potential post-hatchling dispersal trajectories of loggerhead and leatherback turtles in the South Western Indian Ocean. The study aimed to investigate the effect of hatchling swimming behaviour on hatchling dispersal and survival probability. To our knowledge, this study provides the first estimate of neonate sea turtle dispersal in the SWIO by combining a particle tracking model, using the Copernicus ocean surface current data, with in situ hatchling behavioural data.

SkyFISH: Water quality monitoring tool Powered by TERRASIGNA
Overview SkyFISH service informs users on the availability of the fish resources and the sustainability of these resources in the Black Sea. This service is targeting the aquaculture, fishery, coastal management and conservation activities in the public and private sectors. The main objective of this service is to develop a user-friendly platform based mainly on satellite derived and modeled information, suitable for identification of the most favourable fishing and aquaculture areas in the Black Sea Romanian coastal waters. The SkyFISH platform is a web-based service that can be used by the end-users as a decision support tool for finding the most favorable fishing zones or analyze the suitability of specific areas for aquaculture activities and monitoring of the existing ones. It takes full advantage of the multiple Earth Observation resources available through Copernicus Marine and its oceanic parameters. •
Before the implementation of the SkyFISH platform, there were no similar tools for the Black Sea area available. Fisheries and aquaculture involved stakeholders can now use SkyFISH in order to better plan their fishing campaigns or to precisely assess the potential of specific zones for mussel farms development.

TERRASIGNA is a Romanian provider of customized Geo-Information services, with strong expertise in the field of Earth Observation, with focus on Copernicus core and downstream services, data mining and satellite image time series processing. The company offers innovative and efficient solutions for environmental monitoring, with specific specific attention to inland and coastal water quality monitoring. It uses in-house developed algorithms and procedures for development of operational services.

Northern Adriatic sea water quality for aquaculture and tourism sectors - Cadeau project Powered by Ispra
Overview The Municipality of Chioggia, a coastal town close to Venice, Italy, represents both an important touristic zone and a fishing port influenced by Urban Waste Water Treatment Plant (UWWTP), the Po river and the mouths of the Venice Lagoon. In order to follow the dynamic of plumes released by the latter, ISPRA and OGS, with the support of ARPA Emilia Romagna, have developed a high resolution model of the Northern Adriatic Sea using the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea reanalysis model as a boundary and initial conditions. They have performed a reanalysis simulation for the period 2006-today of the Northern Adriatic Sea, including the assimilation of UWWTP data. It allows to relate plumes released by UWWTPs and the measured quality of bathing waters. Each source of bacterial pollution is identified by a different passive tracer. An index will then be developed indicating possible bacterial pollution caused by a UWWTP on a bathing water body. It will help local administrations to better qualify bathing waters laying in their jurisdiction. It will also help many aquaculture farms and fishing port in the area. More here.

Chioggia is an important seaside town that hosts more than 1,000,000 tourists during the bathing season. In the area, there are 11 bathing zones, 8 of which are classified as excellent and 3 as good. Their profile (as defined by the Bathing Water Directive) identify river mouths and urban waste water treatment plants outflows as potential source of bacterial pollution. More here. In the area (considering both the Venice and Rovigo Provincial Local Administration), there are 41 acquaculture plants. The annual production of mussels and clams adds up to 15,000 tonnes with a revenue of more than 20,000,000 euros (source).

OGS is the Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics. The OGS modelling team has strong expertise in numerical oceanography.

Rheticus Marine in support to EU Marine strategy Powered by Planetek Italia Srl
Overview Rheticus® Marine is an innovative, high-performing geoinformation service for monitoring coastal water quality. Rheticus® Marine is fueled by streams of information from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) and EMODnet. It serves customers in the Mediterranean Sea region. The use of streamlined satellite data, processed to a high level (Level 3) by CMEMS, is part of what makes Rheticus® so fast. Rheticus® Marine uses specialized regional algorithms to deliver a wider range of water quality parameters, which can be compared with local data collected by regional authorities. Maps and statistics on eutrophication (i.e. chlorophyll, turbidity and transparency) are provided both automatically and on-demand. With a near real time coastal water quality monitoring at 1km resolution, Rheticus® Marine ensures a steady flow of data for rapid responses to pollution events or algal blooms. Easy visualization and mapping allows displaying water quality parameters thanks a user-friendly web interface with time travel and customized area selection. A cloud-based geoinformation service automates complex processing chains to deliver services regularly, rapidly and reliably. Rheticus® Marine can access to both internal and external resources (data sources, processing modules or external catalogues), and presents the results through a single point of access. •
