BLUEFIN TUNA MONITORING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

SOCIB (Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System) and IEO (INSTITUTO ESPAÑOL DE OCEANOGRAFÍA) have developed a habitat model for predicting spawning distribution of Atlantic Bluefin tuna in the Western Mediterranean. The Atlantic Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is an emblematic top predator species classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Bluefin tuna populations are subject to fishing under the supervision of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Observed data for larvae location are incorporated in a predictive system of the habitat model forced by operational oceanographic products from the Copernicus Marine Service such as satellite altimetry and chlorophyll as well as sea surface temperature and salinity from hydrodynamic models for forecasting the Bluefin tuna habitats. Diego Alvarez from SOCIB says that "Copernicus Marine Service satellite and model products are key inputs for our Bluefin tuna habitat model as its development and migration are strongly linked to temperature and ocean currents respectively."

CHLO4MSFD: A WEB PORTAL SERVICE IN SUPPORT TO MSFD

CHLO4MSFD is a web portal service focused on satellite data to answer the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) over all European Marine Regions. It is dedicated to stimulate and enhance the use of satellite chlorophyll-a data from CMEMS and derived products by MSFD actors in their monitoring, assessment and reporting activities. To achieve this general objective, CHLO4MSFD will include the following elements: 1. A catalogue of different relevant datasets from CMEMS 2. Web mapping services (WMS and ncWMS) to visualize the data 3. Web services to extract spatial and temporal subsets of grids (maps) and points (time series) in formats commonly used by MSFD actors. 4. Link to relevant scientific and technical documentation related to the applicability of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a for MSFD assessment purposes. 5. A Web client application to search, visualize, and extract data, using the above mentioned services. The access to this application can be found in the Homepage as 'Access to Service'. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) aims to achieve Good Environmental Status of the EU's marine waters by 2020. Under the MSFD, each Member State must establish monitoring programmes to support the assessments (based on 11 selected descriptors) and the regular update of targets. At present, most monitoring programmes are based on in-situ sampling methods for coastal areas. For offshore areas, the in-situ information is usually sparse or absent. Data from EO satellites can provide suitable information for marine status assessment offshore. In particular, current ocean colour missions such as the Copernicus Sentinel-3 can support the assessment of descriptor 5.

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO COPERNICUS MARITIME SURVEILLANCE SERVICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is the Entrusted Entity responsible for delivering the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance service (CMS), in the framework of the Copernicus Security Service. The service is free of charge for authorized users performing operations in the maritime domain. The CMS function areas include: supporting the fisheries control activities, maritime safety and security, law enforcement, customs activities, marine environment monitoring (pollution) and other operations linked to anti-piracy and defense. EMSA delivers the CMS service via a dedicated web-based interface - Integrated Maritime Service (IMS). The IMS integrates a wide range of maritime data from various sources including ship reporting systems and ancillary meteo-oceanographic data from CMEMS, EMODNET and ECMWF. Various parameters such as sea surface temperature, wave height, ocean currents and sea surface height from CMEMS ocean model, including 10-day forecast, are ingested into the IMS tool. The integration of these data sets boosts the usage of the interface and assists the CMS users in assessing a more complete maritime surface picture.

The value-added products (i.e. Vessel detection, Activity detection as well as Wind and Wave Information) available through the Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service allow to reach large user communities ranging from fisheries control, law enforcement, maritime safety and security, customs, marine pollution monitoring and other international organisations.

CMEMS satellite observations and model products are integrated in EMSA's systems. The model products provide a 10-day forecast of global ocean currents, sea surface temperature and height, updated daily. CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO EMODNET SEABED HABITATS

European seabed habitat maps are important as they contain essential information about the seafloor. They serve many purposes including the design of ecologically coherent Marine Protected Area networks, assessing benthic ecosystem services, establishing monitoring programs for seabed habitats and informing maritime spatial planning. They are also indispensable for Member States to fulfil their legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, where full coverage of benthic broad-scale habitats of all European seas is required. EMODnet Seabed Habitats aims to provide a single access point to European seabed habitat data by assembling individual point datasets, maps and models from various sources and publishing them as interoperable data products for assessing the environmental state of ecosystems and sea basins. Habitats are influenced by the physical environment such as ocean currents and waves. EMODnet Seabed Habitats uses CMEMS model ocean currents reanalysis in the Mediterranean and Black Seas as boundary conditions to higher resolution coastal models to predict values at the sea floor (using EMODnet bathymetry and substrate data).

EUSeaMap broad-scale predictive model, produced by EMODnet Seabed Habitats fulfil the EU Member States legal obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The extent of the mapped area includes the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and areas of the North Eastern Atlantic extending from the Canary Islands in the south to Norway in the North. The maps are produced using a top-down modelling approach using classified habitat descriptors to determine a final output habitat. Habitat descriptors differ per region but include: Biological zone, Energy class, Oxygen regime, Salinity regime, Seabed Substrate and Riverine input.

CMEMS IN SUPPORT TO FRENCH HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
SHOM is the French Hydrographic Office. SHOM supports the French Navy and Government with what concerns maritime knowledge and coastal policies. SHOM develops coastal ocean models. Its coastal service aims at delivering high resolution ocean forecasts in French coastal areas to answer the growing needs from public marine policies and sea users either public or private. SHOM uses the dynamical downscaling method to obtain high resolution coastal models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. SHOM uses many products from the Copernicus Marine Service 1) as initial and boundary conditions to its coastal model, 2) for data assimilation of satellite temperature and sea level in its coastal model, and finally 3) for its coastal models validation and qualification. SHOM has also developed an innovative online platform as a service called DataShom to distribute SHOM & Météo-France marine coastal forecasts and derived products. Users access 4 day forecasts on key parameters (atmospheric pressure, wind, waves, storm surge, currents, temperature and salinity of the sea water) for navigation and marine activities.

The Shom coastal oceanographic forecast service aims at delivering high resolution forecasts of the ocean state in French coastal areas that will answer the growing needs coming from public marine policies and sea users either public or private : maritime safety, natural coastal hazards, fisheries, seabed mining, pollution, marine energy, tourism, nautical events. Uses could also be far more diverse in transverse applications like radioactive contamination, epidemiology, police investigation and urban planning. The service is expected to support from 500 to 1000 users per day.

To run its models, Shom uses several products from the Copernicus Marine Service catalog, especially in the three domains : 1) Initial and boundary conditions, 2) Models validation and qualification and 3) Data assimilation. COMBATING MARINE LITTER POLLUTION

The 7th Continent Expedition aims to build up awareness amongst general public, students as well as local industry and political stakeholders about the devastating impact of plastic waste dispersion in the ocean. Having studied plastic waste dispersion and accumulation in the ocean, the organisation strongly believes that public awareness and mobilisation must go hand-in-hand with research in order to put an end to this type of pollution. According to Patrick Deixonne, 7th Continent Expedition founder -We must all spread awareness about our impact on the ocean. Alexandra Ter Halle, CNRS chief scientist of the 7th Continent Expedition testifies that "Plastic debris is fragmented into tiny pieces (less than a millimetre) and is responsible for animal entanglement and the transport of invasive species and chemicals. CMEMS ocean model currents and sea level satellite maps allow us to locate plastic debris trapped in oceanic eddy structures, in order to sample and study its fragmentation".

For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. Plastic has many attractive qualities which have led to an over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials have ultimately become waste with staying power. Plastic litter has become a large source of pollution, lethal to nature. The annual plastic production has increased globally of + 620% in the last 70 years. During year 2014, 311 million metrics tons of plastic were produced. In 2015, 5 to 13 million metric tons of plastic waste were available to enter into the ocean, through river discharge mainly.

COMBINING DESALINISATION AND WAVE ENERGY FARMS

Wavepiston has been working on wave energy since 2006. The Danish company aims to create sustainable and affordable devices to harness the vast potential of ocean waves. Currently demonstrating its prototype off the coast of Denmark, the team plans on deploying another device in the Mediterranean. Wavepiston is developing devices using wave energy to produce electricity and power desalinisation plants. Selecting a test site is a crucial step for wave energy companies as wave energy converters are often optimized for a specific wave climate. Resource assessment is thus one of the first phases of any ocean energy project. Using Copernicus Marine Service data, Wavepiston was able to perform quick assessments of the feasibility of wave sites in the North Sea and the Mediterranean. During the R and D phase, running power production simulations is necessary to validate the models used by the company. The Copernicus Marine wave data allowed Wavepiston to conduct potential power generation simulations on given project sites.

Estimates of potential production from wave energy vary, but all agree that the size of the prize is significant from 4.000 TWh/year (Cruz 2008) to 29.500 TWh/year (IPCC 2011). As a benchmark, Europe consumes around 3.000 TWh/year. Wave energy can provide utility scale power production. It also has applications for remote islands replacing expensive and polluting diesel-powered production. Furthermore, wave energy can power onshore and offshore industries such as fish farms, oil and gas platforms and desalinisation plants.

"COSTA CONCORDIA" ACCIDENT: MONITORING POTENTIAL OIL SPILLS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
A joint team from Italy National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, INGV), the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, CMCC) and the University of Bologna have developed a downstream application for the Italian Coast Guards (i.e. oil spill forecast) which relies on Copernicus Marine Service products. When the cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground off the Italian coast in January 2012, the Italian Coast Guard Operational Centre was supplied with reliable daily ocean current forecasts for the Mediterranean Sea. These forecasts, modelled by Copernicus Marine Service, were combined with the oil spill model MEDSLIK-II to simulate possible transport and dispersion scenarios of the oil in the sea. This forecasting analysis of oil spill drift efficiently complements other European services (e.g. oil spill detection and monitoring from EMSA, the European Maritime Safety Agency).

In January 2012, Costa Concordia struck a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the eastern shore of Isola del Giglio. This tore open a 50 m gash on the port side of her hull, which soon flooded parts of the engine room resulting in power losses. Despite the gradual sinking of the ship, an order to abandon ship was not issued until over an hour after the initial impact. The evacuation of Costa Concordia took over six hours and not all passengers were evacuated. Of the 3229 passengers and 1023 crew known to have been aboard, 32 died.

DATAHUB FOR MULTI-SECTOR ENVIRONMENTAL DATA DISTRIBUTION CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
Planet OS is a private company that provides big data infrastructure for industry to help them transform the way data-driven decisions are made. Planet OS has gathered environmental data from various sources, including the Copernicus Marine Service, in order to provide with met-oceanic information to various industry sectors: construction and management of offshore structures (e.g. offshore wind farms), development of port and harbour related structures, shipping industry, surfers and wave energy. Within the Open OS Datahub, data access to wave model product is simplified. Indeed, in practice, wave model data is difficult to access due to strange file formats, and there is very little information about the difference between the models. Using Planet OS Datahub, user can simply compare datasets by reviewing their detail pages, and get access to the data with a standard API call.

From local wind-induced waves to swell waves originating from distant weather systems, wave models provide critical information about our seas and oceans. Wave information is useful for the construction and management of offshore structures (e.g. offshore wind farms) to plan the expected resilience of offshore structures that are constantly influenced by the force of water. It could also be used for the development of port and harbour related structures as historical wave data is significant for building structures. The Shipping industry is also concerned by waves for large cargo ships to small yachts. Finally, it has been predicted that wave energy will have great potential in the future.

LINKS SPA has developed a decision support system for coast and port management in the frame of the START project: Systems for rapid mapping and coastal and marine territory Control. The objective is to develop a new capacity of coastal situational awareness in a given territorial context: the coastal area of Puglia and the main port areas of the Region. It includes a web GIS with a data catalogue (observational, forecast and indicators about the main phenomena like coastal erosion, flooding, overtopping) along the Apulia coasts based on Copernicus data. A technological platform for data collecting and processing has been developed in order to support decision making within Italian ports and harbors. The targeted end-users are harbor authorities, coastal towns, agencies for environmental protection and public authorities in Italy.

The START platform is aiming at a better and easier monitoring and planning of coastal activities within harbors.

DHI SUPPORTING ARPAL WITH MARINE LITTER AND WATER QUALITY MONITORING CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
ARPAL is an Italian regional public environmental agency for the protection of the Ligurian environment. Its mission includes support to monitoring activities and litter modelling (Directives 2000/60/EC and 2008/56/EC), Bathing Water Quality forecast (Directive 2006/7/EC ), Forecast of river fine sediment plume and oil slicks, Forecast of algal bloom, Monitoring and forecasting of aquaculture pollution. As a support to ARPAL, DHI Italia has recently developed a set of marine water quality applications. The system, based on MIKE by DHI products, adopts a numerical modelling downscaling approach of circulation models. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution models as forcing conditions. Starting from the Copernicus Marine Service physical products at Mediterranean basin scale, very high resolution close to the coast is reached (50 meters approximately) through subsequent model nesting, allowing to solve typical coastal dynamics and scales.

This was clearly reflected, as an example, in the relatively recent adoption of the EU Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC and Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC. Both Directives underline the need for adoption of specific tools, also modelling based, with the purpose of providing better and earlier information to citizens about the quality of their bathing waters, and of protecting more effectively the marine environment across Europe.

DOWNSTREAMING SERVICES OF CMEMS DATA THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
ODYSSEA is a user-centred project aiming to make Mediterranean marine data easily accessible and operational to a broad range of multiple end-users operating in the Mediterranean Sea. ODYSSEA aims to develop, operate and demonstrate an interoperable and cost-effective platform, integrating data received from various networks of observing and forecasting systems across the Mediterranean basin, while producing its own data through monitoring and modelling systems installed at a network of Observatories. The project adopts an end-user centered approach, in which the various groups of end-users and stakeholders, within and external to the Consortium, will be involved from the beginning of the project in the design, development and operation of the platform. End-user requirements will drive all tailored and packaged services provided by ODYSSEA platform. To facilitate the engagement of end-users and to promote the downstreaming and dissemination of marine data at Observatory level, a mock-up platform was designed and developed by DUTH, using social media (Facebook, Twitter). CMEMS data as well as data from other data providers (NOAA, Metar) were retrieved.

After the first six months of project implementation, a community of active end-users has started to develop along the Mediterranean Sea. More than 1,000 people are following ODYSSEA facebook pages and about 5,000 people receive daily posts with CMEMS data. Presently, in Greece we cover three broad areas (Thracian Sea, Thermaikos Gulf and Eastern Evoia) and seven point locations with specific end-users interest. In Egypt in collaboration with the NGO RAED we cover the Abu Qir bay. In Tunisia in collaboration with the NGO ANDDCSV we cover the Gulf of Gabes. In Thermaikos Gulf, we estimate that 400 tn of mussels were saved from massive deaths during the July 2017 heat wave.

ODYSSEA Facebook and Twitter apps use various CMEMS products, as operational forecasts from models, satellite re-analysis products and in situ RT-NRT data. The products used cover the whole Mediterranean basin and a broad range of physical, chemical and biological parameters. We retrieve CMEMS data and combine them with data from other platforms to produce synthetic diagrams and explanatory texts and inform end-users on conditions at sea and weather (present and forecasted). The ODYSSEA project is formed of a consortium of 28 partners from 14 countries, six of which are non-EU (Middle East and North Africa). The project is coordinated by Democritus Unversity of Thrace, Greece. EARLY WARNING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

The private IT company LINKS SPA and the public CMCC foundation (Fondazione CMCC- Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici) have combined their respective skills in order to develop sea situational awareness services for users in various sectors. "EARLY WARNING" (http://www.marine-ew.com/en/home) is one of the web tools developed, which proposes a web interface showing parameters useful for raising an environmental warning for anywhere in the Mediterranean. It displays forecasts for the next few days of hydrodynamical parameters such as wave height, and also early warning indicators such as sea level trends. The Copernicus Marine Service models provide several estimates of such parameters as heat content and sea level trends in the Mediterranean, thus enabling the EARLY WARNING tool to provide useful decision-support parameters to anyone in the Mediterranean.

Avalon Offshore has been launched in 2016 for both Apple iOS and Android. It is designed to provide a very complete navigation solution for cruisers and racers by providing in a simple app all the navigation functions needed by the boat skipper: weather routing, automatic weather sources, navigation monitoring, AIS targets, NMEA support, anchoring alarm and regatta module. To calculate precise routes, Avalon Offshore integrates a VPP calculator that will provide the skipper with reliable velocity predictions and automatic wheather sources that reduce transmission volumes and costs versus standard grib files.. Avalon Offshore routes are calculated by a proprietary algorithm, derived from the standard isochron algorithm which has already produced outstanding results during offshore regattas. From a cartographic viewpoints, Avalon support any type of raster maps as well as vectorial maps from Navionics. When calculating routes, Avalon Offshore uses tidal and oceanic currents provided by the Copernicus Marine Service.

Avalon drastically improves the safety by providing the skipper with the anticipated conditions of the planned cruise: wind, gust, waves, thunderstorms. They estimate that they can reduce the motoring time by about 30% by providing the skipper with a precise comparizon between the shortest distance and the smallest duration route. Travel duration error contained within 5% on 2 days cruises, thanks to the reliable boat velocity predictions computed by Avalon, assuming weather conditions are reasonably in line with forecasts.

Forecasts all over Spain are performed for different variables, including ports like Algeciras Bay located in the Mediterranean Sea, Bilbao in the Bay of Biscay and Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean. Using Copernicus Marine Service Information data as a starting point, Puertos del Estado in conjunction with the Harbour Authorities has developed several downstream services, consisting in a series of high resolution models. They calculates forecast of different variables at points around the shoreline: significant height of waves, wind, seal level, astronomic tides, currents and water temperature. MET-OCEAN STUDIES AND KEY ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS FOR FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND TECHNOLOGY CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
Floating wind turbines are an up-and-coming technology that can be installed in deeper and very windy water far from the shore. French Mediterranean coast is particularly well suited to the development of this renewable offshore energy source. In 2016, the French government has selected a pilot floating wind farm project called EFGL (Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion), conducted by joint venture comprised of ENGIE, EDP Renewables, Caisse des Dépôts, Eiffage, Principle Power and GE. Located 16 km off the coast of Leucate and Le Barcarès, EFGL project includes 4 GE Haliade TM 150-6MW turbines with semisubmersible floaters designed by Principle Power (Aix-en-Provence) and built by Eiffage Métal (Fos-sur-Mer). NOVELTIS, a private service company in oceanography contracted by ENGIE will perform the metocean study and define environmental parameters at the wind farm location for offshore site characterization. These inputs are required for both engineering and environmental studies. NOVELTIS uses CMEMS ocean model temperature and salinity from 1955 up to 2015 to build a statistical analysis of the oceanic circulation patterns of the area.

ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT INDUCED BY OFFSHORE OIL SPILLS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
A methodology for the evaluation of the environmental risk induced by accidental oil spills occurring from offshore installations has been developed by University of Bologna, addressing in particular the impact of spills on the sea and on the coastlines. Directive 2013/30/EU on the safety of offshore oil and gas operations has introduced more strict requirements for the protection of both the workers and the environment. The methodology developed here produces specific quantitative risk indexes, based on credible spill events, wind and sea conditions and may support the implementation of remediation strategies. In this context, the marine environment in the area of the installations has to be characterized with the environmental parameters which determine the trajectory and the fate of the spilled oil. These parameters are represented mainly by surface wind and ocean current fields. Suitable data were downloaded from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service which provides 2D 6-hours-averaged wind data and 3D 24-hours-averaged current data; data referring to the year 2015 were considered.

The European Parliament and Council have published on June 12 2013 the Directive 2013/30/EU on safety of offshore oil and gas operations. The objective of this Directive is to reduce the occurrence of major accidents relating to offshore oil and gas operations and to limit their consequences, thus increasing the protection of the marine environment and coastal economies against pollution. It establishes the minimum conditions for safe offshore exploration and exploitation of oil and gas, limits possible disruptions and improves the response mechanisms in case of an accident.

ESTIMATING WAVE ENERGY RESOURCES IN THE NORTH AEGEAN ARCHIPELAGO CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
North Aegean Sea is a relatively rich region for wave energy resource. Although average wave heights ranges in low levels, wind regimes and Aegean geomorphology create frequent waves. On a seasonal basis, the maximum mean wave power occur in winter. Local winds from the North West can make a significant contribution to renewable wave energy production during the summer season. The scope of the present study is first to identify feasible locations to deploy potential Wave Energy Farms in the North Aegean Sea and then to propose for sustainable water and energy solutions to remote island communities. A method of Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) was developed using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. Handling multiple conflicting criteria, the area was designed taking into consideration protected areas, military exercising areas, marine routes etc.. The Copernicus Marine Service wave model in the Mediterranean Sea was used to get an estimation of the wave energy. Results showed that the Skyros island is the most suitable island for the development of a wave energy farm.

All islands in the North Aegean Archipelago face water and energy related issues due to limited sources and obsolete infrastructure. Problems are more intensive during the summer mass tourism that increases population up to 700%. Import of fossil fuels and water from mainland results into increased costs and management problems. Islands obtain their electricity primarily from diesel generators, providing five time more expensive electricity than on mainland. In the case of water, the resources are quite restricted and expensive. Overexploitation of groundwater resources, through illegal boreholes, causes coastal erosion and soil salinization.

FLOOD PREVENTION ALONG THE FRENCH ROUSSILLON MEDITERRANEAN COAST CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The French « Roussillon » area along the Mediterranean coast is regularly exposed to flooding events. The French CNRS research centre in Toulouse, Laboratoire d'aérologie at Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées, has developed a suite of downscaled models in order to better comprehend the flooding potential of the Tet river near Perpignan in Southern France. The river flooding potential is studied using a method called Dynamical Downscaling. During a Mediterranean Sea storm, wave height along the French and Spanish coast can be up to 6 to 7 meters high. Such storm, associated to heavy precipitation during a Cevenol event for example, can trigger floodings.

ACTION MODULERS is a private consulting company from Portugal that provides services and software solutions worldwide, one of which is the MOHID Water Modelling System (http://www.actionmodulers.com/products/mstudio/products-m ohidstudio2015.shtml). The Portuguese coast is regularly exposed to flooding events. The MOHIB Water Modelling System is an early warning system to help reduce flood risk. MOHIB is composed of a downscaling modelling suite using the Copernicus Marine Models as boundary conditions. Downscaling is a method of obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Frank Braunschweig from ACTION MODULERS states that "the Copernicus Marine Service high-resolution ocean model provides very accurate oceanic boundary conditions for our local MOHIB downscaling models. Thanks to CMEMS, we have for example developed an early warning system for flooding around the Tagus river and in the Baiwa area in Lisbon".

The CEASELESS project focuses on coastal sea dynamics using satellite data (Sentinel data from Copernicus), in-situ coastal observations and met-ocean numerical models that consider explicitly the land boundary condition. It will help building the future coastal service of Copernicus. It provides a demonstration in various coastal areas of ad-hoc processing tools, data repositories and fit for purpose merging techniques from various ocean and land sources. It also brings further validation of the existing Copernicus products in coastal areas and provides examples of coastal applications using the Copernicus products and services. Pilot geographical areas have been chosen for their contrasting met-ocean conditions, including the North Atlantic and Mediterranean offshore domains, the Catalan and North Adriatic Gulf, and the Danish coast and German Bight with freshwater inlets. For example, the CMEMS products have been used for renewable energy applications in the Danish coast, in order to assess the resource and the functional performance of offshore wind turbines. They have also been used in the Catalan coast for water quality applications.

EO data users in coastal areas need high spatial resolution and accuracy products to answer their specific problematic. Regarding accuracy, CEASELESS local forecasts include data assimilation from nearby coastal stations to compensate for coastal errors which, associated to topographic or bathymetric gradients, degrade the performance of meteorological and oceanographic models with respect to those in shelf and ocean waters. Regarding higher spatial resolution, CEASELESS has chosen to focus its models in location of interest, for instance a harbour entrance or access route or an inlet. Both accuracy and resolution have benefited predictions in the chosen pilot areas.

For example, the Copernicus Marine Service Physics and Wave model products in the European North West Shelf Seas have been used for renewable energy applications in the Danish coast, in order to assess the resource and the functional performance of offshore wind turbines. GREAT CIRCLE, a Belgian startup, has developed a sailing navigation software (SQUID) that includes a weather routing module for sailboats. Great Circle works with most of the leading offshore teams and race management offices around the world, including the Vendée Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, Route du Rhum and America Cup. SQUID is software that lets the user download and view the GRIB weather files and does the routing with the isochronic method. SQUID can also display satellite images (visible imagery, infrared, water vapour and colour composite) and retrieve synoptic charts and observations (SYNOP, METAR and scatterometry). SQUID uses the Copernicus Marine Service sea-surface temperature satellite data as an input as well as ocean model currents for the Global ocean and Europeans Seas.

HIGH-RESOLUTION MODELING TOOL TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The complex and dynamic coastal areas change at small scales due to coastal interventions, wave storms, or river floods. They host specific physical processes that are not adequately reproduced by basin-scale models, leading to their incomplete description by current numerical systems. For example, there is a need to better reproduce in coastal areas the sediment transport in 3 dimension or the freshwater influence. However, users require accurate prediction and analysis information to solve a variety of problems associated to the use of the coast like for example conflicting tourism and port operations, water quality for aquaculture and bathing, etc.. LIM/UPC aims to fulfil this need by proposing a robust and coherent approach to downscale Copernicus Marine products for high resolution operational modelling of coastal areas. The application focuses on the Fangar Bay, in the Ebro Delta (North East of Spain), an environment that combines aquaculture and tourism, with weak current velocities that interact with a changing domain and seasonal fluxes of freshwater, sediment and nutrients that condition the water dynamics and water quality of the bay.

ARTELIA Group develops tools and services for various markets among which are maritime and port engineering, coastal environment and marine energy. In the case of port engineering for example, ARTELIA provides design and construction services for port extensions in various locations around the world. In such contracts, robust knowledge and expertise of the local hydrodynamics is required. CMEMS ocean model products are used to build a statistical analysis of the general and seasonal circulation patterns of the considered area. CMEMS ocean models are also used as boundary conditions for higher resolution ocean models: dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. IMPROVING SONAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DEFENCE VESSELS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) under the Dutch Ministry of Defence and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research (TNO) are collaborating in order to improve underwater sonar communications between the Dutch Ministry of Defence?s sea-going vessels. The performance of a given sonar is critical for self protection. DMO and TNO have developed a sonar performance model, the most complex aspect of which by far is the propagation of sound in the ocean. Such models need to take into account the refraction of sound due to oceanic temperature and salinity variation in the water column, the reflection of sound at the surface, the influence of roughness (wave spectrum, wind speed, sea surface temperature) and bubble content at the surface, as well as the reflection of sound at the seabed. The DMO and TNO use the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Global models as an input source for ocean density (temperature and salinity) in their sonar performance model. Gert Vlaming from DMO says that "we also soon expect to use the wave products from the Copernicus Marine Service".

MANAGEMENT OF FISH INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
An Invasive fish species from the Suez Canal (silvercheeked toad-fish Lagocephalus sceleratus) has rapidly colonised the eastern Mediterranean basin and is currently moving westwards. It puts at risk the fishery management in the Mediterranean Sea as it has a highly opportunistic behaviour, it attacks fish captured in nets and lines, seriously damages fishing gears and catch and is a highly-toxic species with no immediate economic value for the Mediterranean market. Researchers from ISTI-CNR with funding from the H2020 BlueBridge project have produced an overall habitat suitability map and an effective geographical spread map for L. sceleratus at Mediterranean scale by using cloud computing-based algorithms to merge seven machine learning approaches. Data from (i) the AquaMaps Consortium, (ii) the Copernicus Marine Environment monitoring service, and (iii) the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are used. The study suggests that without an intervention, L. sceleratus will continue its rapid spread and will likely have a high impact on fisheries.

The Lessepsian migration is the migration of marine species across the Suez Canal, usually from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, and more rarely in the opposite direction. When the canal was completed in 1869, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine animals and plants were exposed to an artificial passage between the two naturally separate bodies of water, and cross-contamination was made possible between formerly isolated ecosystems. The phenomenon, still occurring today, is named after Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French diplomat in charge of the canal's construction. This migration presents a significant concern to the fisheries industry in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

The private IT company LINKS SPA and the public CMCC foundation (Fondazione CMCC- Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici) have combined their respective skills in order to develop sea situational awareness services for users in various sectors. "Sea-Conditions" (http://www.sea-conditions.com) is one of the web tools developed, which proposes a web interface displaying the met-ocean conditions in the Mediterranean Sea. It displays for example the temperature, ocean currents and waves forecasts with the meteorological forecast along the Mediterranean coast. Forecasts refer to a time-span of four and a half days, with a time schedule of 3 hours for the first two and a half days and of 6 hours for the next two days. Giovanni Coppini from CMCC says that "the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea models provide accurate ocean current and wave forecasts for the Mediterranean. CMEMS also provides satellite ocean colour data useful for an initial assessment of met-ocean conditions in the Mediterranean."

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS FOR PORT MANAGEMENT

The ports suffer extreme events of essential physical variables, especially wind, waves and sea level. These affects the installations during all phases of the harbor life, from design to operation. To respond to these complex needs, in the framework of the SAMPA series of projects, launched by the Algeciras Bay Port Authority and PUERTOS DEL ESTADO, a tailor-made software application, entitled SAMPA-CMA, is dedeloped to provide customized access to met-ocean information, and advanced viewing services, such as a user alert system (e-mail and SMS). Available operational oceanographic products and existing ocean-meteorological information are delivered, and fully adapted to meet the Port Authority needs. In the framework of SAMPA, new high-resolution forecast models were developed (for atmosphere, waves and circulation) in order to improve the regional met-ocean forecast solutions available for the Algeciras Bay and the nearby Gibraltar Strait area. The SAMPA ocean forecast system, developed by the University of Malaga and Puertos del Estado, was configured as a downscaling from the CMEMS IBI model.

The Strait of Gibraltar is the natural connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and a choke point of the world ocean. The area is characterized by very strong currents and very complex dynamics representing an important challenge for the operational oceanographic services. Furthermore, the Strait of Gibraltar supports very intense maritime traffic. All these facts emphasise the necessity for having efficient operational oceanographic services to monitor and forecast these waters. The SAMPA Services has a widespread use within the ABPA: The Port Authority has granted SAMPA CMA access to more than 200 users, including private companies related to the harbor activities.

MET-OCEAN CONDITIONS FOR SURFERS

MeteoSurf is a free multi-source weather forecasting App designed to provide wind and wave conditions of the Mediterranean Sea. It is an application for smartphones and tablets, built as a Progressive Web App able to supply detailed and updated maps and data showing heights of sea waves in the Central Mediterranean. It is mainly targeted for surfers and wind-surfers. Data can be displayed as animated graphical maps, or as detailed table data. The maps refer to the whole Mediterranean Sea, while the table data is able to provide specific information for any of the major surf spots in the Med Sea. MeteoSurf shows data collected from 3 different forecasting system sources among which the Copernicus Marine Service ocean forecast model. Met-Oceanic conditions are available in the following locations: Algeria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey. Once the surfing spot has been selected, data will be prompted in a table listing the forecast for wave height, wave direction, wind speed and wind direction.

Capacity of the surf industry is large: over 10 million surfers worldwide, increasing at 12%-16% per annum. Information about met-oceanic conditions is mandatory for their safety. Surfers constantly watch the weather as it is bound to change in an instant and they don't want to be stuck way out when a big lightning storm comes through.

MODELING PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea poses considerable risk to ecosystems and human health, causing adverse economic impacts on coastal communities. What are the main trajectories of plastics at sea? Where do plastics come from, and where do they accumulate? A research realized in the framework of AMAre project and lead by CMCC researcher Svitlana Liubartseva identified the transport and fate of plastic marine debris in the Mediterranean Sea with the aim to find solutions to this key issue. An ensemble of more than 10 billion virtual particles has been tracked to understand the transport and fate of plastic marine debris in the Mediterranean Sea, embracing its three environmental compartments: the sea surface, the coastlines, and the sea bottom. Anthropogenic sources, such as coastal cities, rivers and shipping lanes are taken into consideration. Monte Carlo technique is developed to compute the beaching and sedimentation of plastics. Plastic particles are forced by the high-resolution sea surface kinematics provided by the Copernicus Marine Service model in the Mediterranean Sea over 2013-2017.

Plastics mainly accumulate on the coastlines and sea bottom and the former sink greatly dominates the latter one: terrestrial plastics (from coastal human populations and rivers) reside for 7 days at the sea surface, while the plastics from shipping lanes have a mean residence time of 80 days, not allowing any long-term accumulation at the sea surface. The coastlines with the highest plastic fluxes include the Cilician sub-basin (Turkey), the Catalan Sea (Spain), Israel, the Po River Delta area (Italy). Also, highly polluted local patches in the vicinity of sources with limited circulation are identified.

The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea daily analysis datasets provided by a coupled hydrodynamic-wave (NEMO-WW3) modeling system are used. The SUEZ center RIVAGES PRO TECH develops tools and services for real-time monitoring and forecasting of the nearshore environment for empowered decision making. RIVAGES PRO TECH collects data, runs detailed ocean models and provides synthetic indicators for decision making support. MONITORING INTENSE RAIN EVENTS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA AREA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The Mediterranean intense rain events are a recurrent meteorological process taking place in the Mediterranean area, including concentrated rains lasting several days affecting areas as Southern France and Eastern Spain in autumn. Such rain events are highly correlated with the Mediterranean Sea Surface Temperature. As part of the research project VERSUS (http://www.ceam.es/versus), CEAM has built a climatology for sea surface temperature in the Mediterranean Sea to study its spatial distribution and temporal trend. The goal is to provide a relationships between different atmospheric-oceanic variables and heavy precipitation events in the Mediterranean region. CEAM is using satellite sea surface temperature data from the Copernicus Marine Service and other sources in order to daily monitor the sea surface temperature in the Mediterranean Sea. CEAM has developed a new website showing daily map updates from different sources and information on sea surface temperature climatology and trends available http://www.ceam.es/ceamet/SST/. Such information is useful for research, weather/climate forecasting, travel and fishing industries.

One of the mission of the CEAM meteorology and pollutant dynamics department is to characterise the meteorological processes responsible for climate and dispersion and transport of atmospheric pollutants in the Mediterranean area. MONITORING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT OF THE LIGURIAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
ARPAL is an Italian regional public agency for the protection of the Ligurian environment. They have built several modelling tools to monitor for example sediment and mud transport or bathing water quality in the Ligurian Sea. They can also monitor oil drift in the event of an oil spill, and can activate search and rescue tools in case of a man overboard. For all these modelling tools, the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea ocean models are used as boundary conditions for their higher resolution ocean model: dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining, for example, a high-resolution local Ligurian Sea model from the lower resolution CMEMS model as forcing conditions. T. Del Giudice and S. Magrì from ARPAL say that "the synergy between the open Copernicus Marine data, the modelling tools we have developed in-house and other data sources has enabled us to build a robust monitoring system for the Ligurian Sea".

MONITORING MERCURY POLLUTION IN THE ADRIATIC SEA

Marine Biology Station (MBS) in Piran, part of the Slovenian National Institute of Biology (NIB) are working for a better understanding of the Adriatic Sea circulation. Major rivers, such as the Po, end up in the Adriatic and many cities are located along its coastline hence the strong need to better comprehend pollutants dispersion in this area. MBS has developed an high resolution ocean model ADRIPOM which allows to follow coastal tracer dispersion and track filaments of pollutants along the coast. Downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from the lower resolution Copernicus Marine Service model as forcing conditions. Their models analyze dispersion of toxic Mercury in the Gulf of Trieste. As a consequence of Mercury mining in Idrija (the mine has been closed for years), hundreds of kilos of Mercury are estimated to enter the Gulf of Trieste each year through the Isonzo river. Numerical models for Mercury dispersion give researchers and decision makers a solid ground on which to build sensible environmental policies.

Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land. One of the biggest sources occurs as a result of runoff. It includes many sources, like for example septic tanks, cars, trucks, boats, agriculture, engine oil. Some water pollution actually starts as air pollution, which settles into waterways and oceans. Dirt can be a pollutant. Top soil or silt from fields or construction sites can run off into waterways. High resolution coastal model help assessing the various tracer and pollutant dispersion such as mercury heavy metal pollutant.

MONITORING OIL SPILLS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

REMPEC is the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea, established in Malta since 1977, acting under the umbrella of UNEPMAP and its Barcelona Convention. One of their activities is to prevent illicit oil discharges from ships and to prosecute any offenders. In the event of an oil spill, local authorities can request the support of REMPEC through the MONGOOS network (Mediterranean Operational Network for the Global Ocean Observing System, http://www.mongoos.eu/). One of the oil spill drift models that MONGOOS uses is the MEDSLIK oil spill drift model, which is downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea model. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. Such models have been used as exercises during fake oil spill events (the OSCAR-MED project) and also in real-world events (e.g. oil slick along the Lebanon coast in 2006).

The private IT company LINKS SPA and the public CMCC foundation (Fondazione CMCC- Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici) have joined forces to develop sea situational awareness services for users in various sectors. "WITOIL - Where Is The OIL" (http://www.witoil.com/en/home) is one of the web tools they have developed, which proposes a web interface for monitoring the drift of oil slicks in the Mediterranean. An operator only needs to enter the date, location and type of the spill and it displays the possible oil spread on a map after a short computer simulation. The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea models provide accurate forecasts concerning ocean currents and waves in the Mediterranean Sea for computing oil spill drift forecasts. This tool is freely available to anyone in the Mediterraneanarea.

MONITORING OIL SPILLS IN THE NORTHERN AEGEAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The northern Aegean Sea is an area of increased marine traffic. There are typically over 80 cargo ships and tankers in transit at any given time. The Ocean Physics and Modelling Group of the University of Athens has developed a forecasting tool in the framework of TOSCA MED project to assist decision makers and stakeholders in the event of an oil spill in the Aegean Sea. They have developed a modelling suite, ranging from low resolution Copernicus Marine hydrodynamic models to higher resolution local models, and finally to oil drift models. The high-resolution hydrodynamic model is downscaled from the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea model. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. The TOSCA MED platform provides for example useful, very high-resolution ocean current forecasts for oil spill risk management in the Gulf of Alexandroupolis.

MONITORING PARTICLES DRIFT IN THE LEVANTINE SEA

Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) is a national research institution (non-profit governmental corporation) mandated to generate knowledge for the sustainable use and protection of Israel marine, coastal and freshwater resources. IOLR has studied pollutants transport by ocean currents in the Levantine Sea, westwards from the Israeli coast. They have developed an high resolution ocean model which allows to follow coastal tracer dispersion and track filaments of pollutants along the Israeli coast. They use the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data to check for the agreement between barriers derived from model and the Chlorophyll filament (CMEMS data) detaching from the Israeli coast.

Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land. One of the biggest sources occurs as a result of runoff. It includes many sources, like for example septic tanks, cars, trucks, boats, agriculture, engine oil. Some water pollution actually starts as air pollution, which settles into waterways and oceans. Dirt can be a pollutant. Top soil or silt from fields or construction sites can run off into waterways. High resolution coastal model help assessing the various tracer and pollutant dispersion.

DHI is a worldwide non-profit private organisation with its head office in Denmark. Its area of expertise ranges from coastal and marine engineering to the energy, aquaculture and agriculture sectors among others. For example, it develops tools for monitoring harbour sedimentation. For the harbour of La Spezia, Italy, in particular, it has developed a model to follow the dispersion and fate of the fine sediment plume during dredging operations. DHI has developed a downscaling modelling suite where the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea model is used to provide boundary conditions for a higher resolution ocean model. Dynamical downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution CMEMS models as forcing conditions. OCEANA MARINE EXPEDITIONS TO FILL KEY GAPS IN BIODIVERSITY DATA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
One of the key components of Oceana's work is to carry out research expeditions at sea with the aim of marine habitat protection. Such expeditions allow for the collection of in situ data on marine species, communities, and habitats. Various technologies are used during these expeditions. The resulting data allows for the preparation of detailed proposals for the designation, expansion or improved management of marine protected areas for biodiversity conservation or fisheries sustainability. During Oceana research expeditions, multiple spatial data sources are used (such as Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet) which are of vital importance throughout the entire project. For example, during the expedition preparations, marine data are used to define the study areas, identify specific points of potential interest and plan survey methodology. Moreover, for the preparation of reports, marine data help in developing proposed marine conservation and fisheries management measures.

Since 2005, Oceana has carried out 29 oceanographic expeditions in 28 countries, and approximately 3000 surveys. They have filmed more than 2000 hours of video of marine habitats and species from Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean waters. These videos, together with still images and with samples from more than 500 grabs, have yielded new information and understanding of the biodiversity present in the many areas where Oceana has carried out expeditions in Europe. Many of these data have contributed to Oceana efforts to create or expand marine protected areas; to date, these efforts have led to the protection of 73 028 km² of marine area in countries such as Finland, Malta, Portugal and Spa

The adoption of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD 2008/56/EC) which descriptor 11 focuses on underwater noise, has given a great impulse to the market of underwater acoustic products and services. Quonops© Online Services, by Quiet-Oceans, provides noise monitoring and prediction tools. It produces an estimate of the spatio-temporal distribution of noise levels generated by human activities at sea and assesses source contributions to the global noise field. It provides for example real time noise and monthly statistical noise maps from shipping. It also allows mapping scenarios of noisy activities at sea to predict their impacts. The outputs are tailored to the requirements of regulations such as the EU MSFD directive. Based on physical acoustic propagation models, Quonops© considers the reality of the area through input data gathered from numerous sources. OCEANOGRAPHY EXPLORATION TOOL TO SUPPORT FISHERIES MANAGEMENT CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
Metocean parameters affecting ecological processes (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll) are crucial in sustainable fisheries assessment and management. They are needed both for operations at sea (i.e cruise campaign design & rerouting) and stock recruitment (i.e defining spawning grounds). Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) have developed a web-based tool integrating in a single operation screen a quick access to ocean data (from satellite, in situ and models) to monitor and forecast hydrodynamic, chemical and biological conditions in the Balearic Sea. This oceanography exploration tool is meant to support the design of sampling campaigns and the integration of environmental information into assessment and management processes. This tool will be used for sustainable fishery management in the Balearic Islands with a particular focus on endangered species such as the Bluefin Tuna. Several products from the Copernicus Marine Service are used to build this tool, including ocean model, satellite and insitu data.

OLEG NAYDENOV ACCIDENT: MONITORING OIL SPILLS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
On Saturday 11th April 2015, after refuelling 1500 tons of oil in the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria island (Spain), the Russian fishing trawler Oleg Naydenov caught fire at 13:30 UTC. Spanish authorities towed the ship out of the port facilities for security reasons. Unfortunately, the fishing ship eventually sank on the night of the 14th April, in waters 2700 meters deep. After the sinkage, on the 16th of April, several oil slicks were spotted on the sea surface. Following these events, actions were taken by the local and national authorities and the emergency services to diminish the environmental damage. IC-MAT (CSIC) and University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have developed a regional hydrodynamical model using the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents to forecast the oil spread. Using CMEMS products they provided service and support to the Spanish Marine safety/rescue services. The real time IBI forecast surface currents were trustworthy for studying pollution dispersion. This has been confirmed by the accuracy of the oil spill predictions and the verification of the oil spill beaching.

RHETICUS MARINE IN SUPPORT TO EU MARINE STRATEGY

Rheticus® Marine is an innovative, high-performing geo-information service for monitoring coastal water quality. Rheticus® Marine is fueled by streams of information from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), and serves customers in the Mediterranean Sea region. The use of streamlined satellite data, processed to a high level (Level 3) by CMEMS, is part of what makes Rheticus® so fast. SORRENTO ACCIDENT: MONITORING POTENTIAL OIL SPILLS

On April 28, 2015, a fire broke out on the 'Sorrento' ferry sailing from Palma de Mallorca to Valencia. The ferry was about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Palma de Mallorca. Following the emergency situation and fearing possible spills, SOCIB together with researchers from the IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and in collaboration with Puertos del Estado, have developed an integrated tool Sorrento Seaboard - which combines on a single dashboard the new scientific capabilities,supporting decision-making associated with accidental marine spills. This tool was developed for SASEMAR, the Maritime Security and Rescue Society, responsible for action at sea, and the regional Balearic Government (DG Emergencies), responsible for action when pollution reaches the coastline. This tool relies on a regional hydrodynamical model using the dynamical downscaling technique, a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from lower resolution Copernicus Marine Service models as forcing conditions. SEARCH AND RESCUE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

The private IT company LINKS SPA and the public CMCC foundation (Fondazione CMCC- Centro Euro-Mediterraneo Sui Cambiamenti Climatici) have combined their respective skills in order to develop sea situational awareness services for users in various sectors. "OCEAN-SAR SEARCH AND RESCUE" decision support system (http://www.ocean-sar.com/en/home) is one of the web tools developed, which offers a web interface allowing search and rescue simulations and operations in the Mediterranean Sea. If the "last known position" of an object or a person in water is entered, the web tool computes the overall search area where the object or person in the water is most likely to be found. The mean trajectory from the last known position to the most likely current position is also drawn as a curved line. The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea models provide accurate ocean currents and wave forecasts in the Mediterranean Sea which enable the OCEAN-SAR SEARCH and RESCUE tool to provide useful simulations to recover human being or objects lost at sea.

SEASONAL FORECASTING AT MéTéO-FRANCE

Météo-France, the French meteorology agency, provides seasonal forecasts for many applications such as hydroelectric energy production management in Sweden and food security early warning systems in Ethiopia, among many others. Predicting ocean behaviour is essential, especially in the tropics, in order to provide accurate seasonal forecasts. Météo-France modelling techniques are based on ocean-atmosphere coupled models and simulations are performed both in real time and for a long reference period in the past. Patrick Josse from Météo-France says that High quality consistent initial oceanic states are needed, both in real time and over the last 25 years and are provided by the Copernicus Marine Service 3D global model product and also the high quality Sea Surface Temperature satellite product. Those two CMEMS products provide key input for seasonal forecasting activities.

It bestows beneficial effects on economies as well as negative effects. SHIP ROUTING A CRUISE FERRY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

The Italian Ship company " Grandi Navi Veloci" has entrusted La Superba's safe routing to the Operational Oceanography Group of the Institute for the Marine and Coastal Environment (IAMC/CNR) in Oristano. The M/V La Superba is a cruise ferry, one of the world largest and fastest luxury cruise ferries which can house close to 3000 passengers. La Superba connects Genoa to Palermo every day, crossing 800 km in the eastern Ligurian Sea, the Corsica Channel and the entire Tyrrhenian Sea. IAMC Researchers of the Operational Oceanography Group run numerical models to simulate the behaviour of various environmental parameters, providing to the Captain of La Superba daily forecasts for ocean characteristics and circulation, as well as waves along the transect. Downscaling is a method for obtaining high-resolution local models from the lower resolution Copernicus Marine Service model as forcing conditions. IAMC uses CMEMS products as boundary and initial conditions to force two sub-regional 3D hydrodynamic models for the Western (seas around Sardinia) and Central Mediterranean Sea (Sicily Channel), and Sardinian Seas.

"VISIR: Discovering Safe and Efficient Routes" (http://www.visir-nav.com/en/home) is one of the web tools developed, which proposes a web interface for ship routing in the Mediterranean. The optimization regards total navigation time, taking into account safety of navigation. Both motorboats and sailboats are considered. The VISIR service is available in both a FREE and a PREMIUM version. The operator enters the ship departure and arrival locations (from point A to point B) and the web tool then computes several possible oceanic routes (optimal versus geodetic routes) and displays them on a map together with the respective journey time (in hours) and distance (in nautical miles). The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea models provide accurate ocean wave forecasts in the Mediterranean Sea that enable the VISIR tool to provide useful ship-routing advice to anyone sailing in the Mediterranean.

CMA CGM is a leading worldwide container shipping group and the leader in France. CMA CGM has developed the Fleet Navigation & Support Centre, which provides navigation support and routing and guidance services. The emergence of new operational ocean forecasts makes it possible to better understand the mesoscale dynamics of the upper ocean and to provide optimized and qualified forecasts when combined with innovative data processing methods. SHIP ROUTING WITH THE SCANNAV NAVIGATION SOFTWARE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
ScanNav provides all necessary tools and support for ship navigation and ship routing (e.g. raster and vector charts from National Hydrographical Offices), GPS and other instruments plug-ins for real-time navigation and/or post-analysis, maps to create routes overlaid with e.g. tide information, water levels or weather and ocean forecasts. ScanNav utilises surface current data from Copernicus Marine Service models in the European North West Shelf areas, the Iberia Biscay Ireland and Mediterranean Sea converted into Grib format. Surface current products are used for ship routing purposes through application of the ScanNav routing module. Other uses include fishing or diving activities and usage were visualization of currents is important. The User defines an area on the chart, send a request to the ScanNav server which returns the results directly via a website, or as an email reply. The service includes converting NCEP data to Grib data on user-selected areas. ScanNav customers are mostly focused on the leisure market. ScanNav also serves professional market customers especially with regard to distribution of Official ENC (Electronic Navigational Charts).

SMARTPHONE APPLICATION FOR SAILORS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
KAPTAN is a smartphone application for mariners developed by the Physical Oceanography Research Group, Dept. of Geosciences, University of Malta, as part of the CALYPSO FO project. It uses HF radar operational data, satellite data and numerical models to provide information on the present and predicted sea conditions in the Malta-Sicily Channel. KAPTAN has a user-friendly interface that provides users with marine weather maps and point data at the tip of their fingers. It centralises data from many sources (modelling, in-situ, satellite), including satellite data from the Copernicus Marine Service. KAPTAN maps those data using Google Earth mapping tools and redistributes them as ASCII files. It also provides a Google Maps application programming interface (API) for users who are also developers. It is one of the most frequently downloaded weather apps in Malta on the Apple App Store and has received 5-star reviews on Google Play.

SUPPORTING AQUACULTURE AND FISHING IN THE ADRIATIC SEA CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA) in the context of the MERMAID project has developed a regional model in the Adriatic Sea for the aquaculture and fisheries industries. The Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea ocean currents model and satellite sea surface temperature data are used among other sources as input for their regional Adriatic Sea model. Maps of various useful parameters such as potential fish harvests (in tons per year) are made available to aquaculture farmers and fish industries. Such dashboards help them with their day-to-day decision making, for example to optimize the selection of sites for growing shellfish, or to monitor water quality. Andrea Taramelli from ISPRA says that "the Copernicus Marine Service ocean currents and satellite sea surface temperature data are key inputs for our Aquaculture dashboard. This saved us the time and expertise we would have had to invest to develop a hydrographical circulation model to get the currents right".

SUPPORTING THE AQUACULTURE INDUSTRY IN EUROPE

Deltares, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Water Insight and DHI have collaborated in the EU-funded project AQUA-USERS (https://portal.aqua-users.eu/), which provides the aquaculture industry with user-relevant and timely information based on the most up-to-date satellite data and innovative optical in-situ measurements. The key purpose is to develop an application that brings together satellite information on water quality and temperature with in-situ observations, as well as relevant weather prediction and met-ocean data. The application and underlying database is linked to a decision support system that includes a set of (user-determined) management options. Specific focus is put on the development of indicators based on Earth observation data for aquaculture management, including indicators for harmful algae bloom events. The methods and services developed within AQUA-USERS are tested by the members of the user board, aquaculture companies and organisations representing different geographic areas and aquacultural production systems.

NORTHERN ADRIATIC SEA WATER QUALITY FOR AQUACULTURE AND TOURISM SECTORS CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The Municipality of Chioggia, a coastal town close to Venice, Italy, represents both an important touristic zone and a fishing port influenced by Urban Waste Water Treatment Plant (UWWTP), the Po river and the mouths of the Venice Lagoon. In order to follow the dynamic of plumes released by the latter, ISPRA and OGS have developed a high resolution model of the Northern Adriatic Sea using the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea reanalysis model as a boundary and initial conditions. They have performed a reanalysis simulation for the period 2006-today of the Northern Adriatic Sea, including the assimilation of UWWTP data. It allows to relate plumes released by UWWTPs and the measured quality of bathing waters. Each source of bacterial pollution is identified by a different passive tracer. An index will then be developed indicating possible bacterial pollution caused by a UWWTP on a bathing water body. It will help local administrations to better qualify bathing waters laying in their jurisdiction. It will also help many aquaculture farms and fishing port in the area. Chioggia is an important seaside town that hosts more than 1,000,000 tourists during the bathing season. In the area, there are 11 bathing zones, 8 of which are classified as excellent and 3 as good. Their profile (as defined by the Bathing Water Directive) identify river mouths and urban waste water treatment plants outflows as potential source of bacterial pollution (http://www.portaleacque.salute.gov.it). In the area (considering both the Venice and Rovigo Provincial Local Administration), there are 41 acquaculture plants. The annual production of mussels and clams adds up to 15,000 tonnes with a revenue of more than 20,000,000 euros (www.venetoagricoltura.org).

AquaMar, an FP7 research project (2009-2013), is the R&D branch of MarCoast and provides Earth Observation (EO) based water quality services to support European and national monitoring agencies and industries operating in coastal waters. It develops water quality downstream services supporting the EU Water Framework Directive, monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), marine coastal infrastructure projects, aquaculture precision farming and bathing waters quality. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour satellite data are used by the MarCoast Ocean Colour Data service to provide value-added services to the public sector organisations responsible for implementing policies at European, national and regional levels.

SUPPORTING ITALY WITH THE EUROPEAN MARINE STRATEGY FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The European Water Framework (hereafter WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework (hereafter MSFD) Directives both require EU Member States to take the necessary measures to achieve a good coastal and oceanic environmental status by 2020. In Italy, ISPRA is one of the national agencies in charge of implementing such measures. For MSFD, 11 Descriptors have been defined for monitoring the environmental status of the oceans ( http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:320 10D0477(01) ) in terms of marine biodiversity, eutrophication, contaminants, marine litter and submarine noise. The Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour Satellite data as well as biogeochemical models and in-situ data are key inputs for monitoring some of the 11 Descriptors, especially Descriptor 5, which deals with eutrophication. Andrea Taramelli from ISPRA has stated that "the Copernicus Marine Service Ocean Colour data are central for the MSFD, as it allows us to improve coherence in eutrophication assessments based on chlorophyll, using satellite-derived chlorophyll provided by CMEMS".

SUPPORTING THE JRC AND EU WITH THE COMMON FISHERIES POLICY (CFP) CASE • USE OVE RVIE W
The dynamic identification of essential fish habitat by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission contributes to the protection of fish stock recovery areas (Article 8 of the Common Fisheries Policy, CFP). Habitat analysis showed that marine predators are attracted by productive fronts for feeding (chlorophyll-a fronts). These studies used the Copernicus Marine Service products of satellite ocean colour and hydrodynamic models to daily map favourable feeding habitats of important species such as hake, Atlantic bluefin tuna, skipjack tuna, fin whale and blue shark. These habitat products are useful as a decision tool for fisheries closure, by-catch reduction and improvement of fish stock estimates. Essential habitats of marine species are also key information for research on full ecosystem modelling and animal behavior analysis. Jean-Noël Druon from the JRC says "Copernicus Marine Service ocean models provide crucial data of suitable quality for our fish habitat model allowing identification both at decadal and real-time time scales. They are major inputs to build robust operational ecology products to sustain the fisheries sector".

Species in the oceans are tied together through marine food webs. It's a Fish-Eat-Fish World! Marine food chain can be simply described with four levels, from plants (photo-autotroph) to herbivores, then to carnivores and finally to top predators that are simply larger and faster than their preys. But food chains can be shorter or much more complex. Better understanding marine food chains and the links between each trophic level is a necessary step for a better and more sustainable management of our environment. The JRC supports EU policies with scientific advice and, regarding fisheries, guides EU deciders on the amount of fish which can be caught within the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

Effective marine spatial planning needs tools that enable different end users to access directly to marine environmental and conservation data-sets. At this end, CIMA foundation presents a web based application called Seawetra. Seawetra is a near real-time integrated system for Mediterranean marine ecosystem monitoring and conservation with 2 objectives 1) to collect, archive, visualize and share geographical information coming from multiple sources over a large spectrum, in an inter-operable format and according to an international standard, 2) to provide stakeholders and different end users with dedicated tools. Data, including some of the CMEMS portfolio, are inserted and managed within the platform, taking into account their diverse space-time scales and degrees of uncertainty and reliability. The Seawetra platform architecture is based on open-source software and open-data and is compliant with standard OGC (WXS) and INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/EC). The application provides, through a graphical interface, a high-resolution and continuously updated information, allowing the user to monitor environmental conditions of the marine realm.

WISE-MARINE: A PLATFORM IN SUPPORT TO MSFD

WISE-Marine is a portal and infrastructure for sharing information with the marine community on the marine environment at European level. Focusing on the state of the marine environment at the European scale, WISE Marine shows the information and knowledge gathered or derived through the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) process and other key marine policy drivers. It is developed in a partnership among Commission services (DG-ENV, DG-JRC), the European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eurostat. WISE-Marine presents available data related to the implementation of the MSFD in European Seas. WISE-Marine has developed a GIS map viewer https://maps.eea.europa.eu/wab/wise-marine-map/ displaying different layers originating from various sources, among which salinity and Chlorophyll-A from the Copernicus Marine Service. In the WISE-Marine map viewer, key topics can be explored and visualized spatially.This comprehensive knowledge base about the ocean is essential to support European marine policies and ocean governance.

Recognising both the ecological and economic importance of European seas, the EU has put in place a range of policies and measures, related to planning and regulating the sustainable use of European seas covering a number of activities such as fisheries, offshore energy production, and protection of marine biodiversity. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive, adopted in 2008, aims to ensure coherence between such EU policies and sets three goals for European seas: to be productive, healthy, and clean. These efforts are also aligned with the EU's Blue Growth agenda.
