CEOS: Ocean Variables Enabling Research and Applications for GEO (COVERAGE) Powered by CEOS COVERAGE

Overview The CEOS Ocean Variables Enabling Research and Applications for GEO (COVERAGE) initiative is a NASA-led project and a cross-cutting, collaborative effort within the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). It aims to provide improved and more seamless access to global, inter- agency and multivariate satellite data spanning the four CEOS Ocean Virtual Constellations (sea surface temperature, ocean vector winds, ocean surface topography and ocean colour radiometry) and select in situ datasets to support a prioritised set of application use cases identified by the stakeholders. COVERAGE utilises a data-rich technological platform for the integrated delivery of ocean data to demonstrate the benefits of multivariate ocean data integration in support of science and applications. It also seeks to demonstrate the potential of the technical system in supporting applications related to marine biodiversity involving synergistic use of remotely sensed environmental data from satellites and in situ biological observations. The COVERAGE’s thematic demonstration, “High Seas Tuna Fisheries in relation to the Environment”, aspires to realize the potential of earth observations more fully, particularly for the ecological and dynamic ocean management applications community, and with a focus on less expert remote sensing data users.

COVERAGE implements an innovative distributed system architecture involving deployments of the project software at remote nodes operating within heterogeneous cloud environments and hosting the project’s US and European CEOS agency satellite data, respectively. WEkEO is being used to host our project software stack in a virtual cloud environment to provide compute and more direct access to Copernicus Marine data. The objective is to minimize large- scale, redundant data movements and demonstrate a fusion of data across disparate computing infrastructures. The integration of in situ holdings at selected partners’ national oceanographic data repositories is another novel aspect of our approach. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a unique US national research facility that carries out robotic space and earth science missions. It is a federally funded research and development centre managed for NASA by Caltech. JPL implements innovative science and engineering programs in planetary exploration, earth science and observation, space- based astronomy and technology development while applying its capabilities to technical and scientific problems of significance for societal benefit.
