South China Sea Mesoscale Eddies Today Powered by South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Overview Oceanic mesoscale eddy has been recognized as one of the typical and prevailing dynamic processes in the open oceans and even marginal seas like the South China Sea (SCS). More studies on mesoscale eddies in the SCS are emerging while accordingly more in situ observations are targeting these coherent vortexes, trying to figure out their evolution, vertical structure, energy exchange, and effects when interacting with other processes, etc. Hence, to monitor the mesoscale eddy field in the SCS, it is essential to efficiently transform near real-time remote sensing data to key information of this kind of prevailing phenomenon. •

Since the extraction of information is repetitive, we here present a method to automatically conduct satellite data downloading, eddy detection, figure generation, and associated push service.

Major marine near real-time remote sensing parameters including the sea surface height (SSH) based on altimetry, sea surface chlorophyll (CHL) acquired by ocean color remote sensors, sea surface temperature (SST), and surface 10 m wind mainly from scatterometer are investigated together.

Overall, this study not only describes an application to extract and share information of the eddy field in the SCS, which is helpful to the researcher focusing on oceanic eddies, but also provides a procedure that can be easily adapted to serve other monitoring purposes based on remote sensing.

Oceanographers utilizes generated figures and eddy properties like eddy numbers per day to study their evolution or characteristics while ocean engineers utilizes the near-realtime information about eddy field to plan and organize the in situ observation.
