The Planets Rachael Higgins
Mercury
The planet probably received this name because it moves so quickly across the sky. Mercury is hot and the closest to the sun. Mercury is often depicted in pictures with winged sandals
Mercury is 58 million kilometres
Away from the sun. Mercury has been visited by the mariner 10 spacecraft.
Venus
Venus Is a small rocky planet blanketed in a thick layer of yellowish clouds. The clouds are not made from water, like the ones here on Earth. Venus sunface is very hot about 400 degree Celsius. The atmosphere of Venus made up mainly of carbon dioxide. Its size is slightly smaller than Earth. Venus is the closest planet to Earth. Even though Venus is very cloudy its simply to hot for rain to form Venus is Earths sister
Earth
The Earth is 93 million miles away from the sun. Earth is the planet we live on, our planet. Earth is the third planet in order from the sun. It is about 150 million kilometres from the sun. The Earth is unlike other planets in the solar system in a number of different ways. Earth has more exposed water land. Three quarters of the Earth is covered by water.
Mars
The red planet as Mars is often called, is the fourth planet from the sun. Of those planets none of them are closer or more engaging to the imagination than Mars. Mars is very rocky and cold and lifeless. Mars is nicknamed the red planet because it is covered with rust like dust . Even the atmosphere is a pinkish red coloured by tiny particles of dust thrown up from the surface. Mars experiences violent dust storms which change its surface.
Jupiter
Jupiter is a giant gas planet which is made up of about 90% hydrogen and 10% helium. It is thought that Jupiter’s Great red spot is a storm of swirling gas that has lasted for hundreds of years. Scientists are still unsure as how such a storm could last so long. If you were 12 years old you would only be 1 year old if you were on Jupiter. Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is 483 million miles away from the sun.
Saturn
Saturn has 18 moons and is over 800 million miles away from the sun. Saturn has rings around it made from ice. Saturn is the sixth planet in the solar system and when seen through a telescope by for most beautiful. Saturn is unusual because of its rings.
Uranus
Uranus is a giant gas planet which is over 1 billion miles away. Uranus has 15 moons. Did you know William Herschel discovered Uranus on discovered Uranus on May 13 1781. Uranus is the 6th planet from the sun. It is 1.8 billion miles from the sun. Since Uranus takes 84 Earth years to go around the sun.
Neptune ď Ź
ď Ź
The discovery of the planet Neptune was one of the most exciting discoveries in astronomy. Neptune cannot be seen without a large telescope and was first seen in 1846 from the observatory in Berlin
Pluto ď Ź
Pluto’s orbit sometimes brings it closer to the Sun than Neptune. It jumped ahead of Neptune on September 5, 1989 and remained there until February, 1999 when it went back to being the farthest.
