from the president Sports and I get along well. It’s not that I have any particular talent to boast about, that is for sure. Rather, I know that without the influence of sports in my life, I would be a different person than I am today. As a kid my focus was on hockey; in high school, football; later I got into basketball; and in recent years, golf. These are the sports that I have personally invested in. There’s something about the competition, physical exertion and fellowship with others that comes through playing sports. I love it. The lessons I’ve learned on the court or field have never failed to seep into all of life. I believe that anyone who puts on their jersey and breaks a sweat in the game (any game) inevitably learns the value of practice or preparation, the essentials of teamwork, the necessity of discipline, and the ability to win and lose well. We become better people in life’s many facets as a result of our athletic endeavors. At Corban we currently have 13 teams (seven women and six men) comprised of more than 275 athletes. We have been very competitive given our size and limited resources. We have very

4

good coaches, and we continue to attract amazingly thoughtful and talented student athletes. Also, we’ve received the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) President’s Cup the last two years, meaning our student-athletes have the highest cumulative GPA (3.28) of all institutions in our conference. Non-statistical information is equally as important as an impressive number. Coaches at Corban take personal responsibility for the spiritual development of their team. We believe that Corban faculty are the curriculum, and similarly, so are our coaches and our staff. They speak into the lives of our students, and knowing the impact they have, we want to hire and continue to ensure our coaches are providing the leadership and mentorship our student athletes want and need. I am pleased with the direction that Greg Eide, director of athletics, is taking Corban. Hired just under two years ago, he has brought his business experience and entrepreneurial spirit to our athletic programs. He has an eye and passion for excellence and branding, which is much needed as we seek to grow the visibility

and impact of our athletic programs. I believe in the value of athletics, both for the athlete and for the spectator at Corban. Those who participate get to be a part of a team—they have a place to belong. And as they work hard to represent the University, great life lessons are learned. For spectators, our games bring alumni, students and the local community together to support their team, a common cause. The result is school spirit, boosted morale and a great sense of community. These are exciting times for Corban University athletics. If you haven’t attended a game, match or meet in a while, my hope is that you will take the opportunity to do so this school year. Nothing beats the experience. Go Warriors! Soli Deo Gloria.

“The foundation to these important elements, however, is often missed,” Blanchard said. “This book points out that the foundation of learning is within the teacher herself or himself. It is in how she responds to her students, how safe she makes her students feel physically and emotionally, as well as how she nurtures the students’ sense of belonging in the classroom. By using these and other elements, a teacher creates an atmosphere that is conducive and beneficial to student learning and achievement.”

The purpose of this research study was to develop a new competency model for executive leaders of social service organizations in the nonprofit sector. The study also sought to compare these competencies with similar roles in other sectors to see if any differences could be articulated. The results of this study were not only a competency model crafted specifically for those leading social service agencies, but also a comparison with other competency models. The new competency model can be helpful in the recruitment and development of executive leaders in the nonprofit sector. It was developed with input from leaders, board members, and educators who have served and worked in nonprofits.

Published in September, Blanchard details how much of teacher education across the U.S. and internationally is spent on achieving specific learning outcomes by effectively using lesson plans, assessments, differentiation, learning goals and classroom management.

This study examines four Advanced Placement classes in four different disciplines at a small private high school in order to identify some common factors defining teacher effectiveness. Four teachers were observed four times each to collect data regarding their use of class time, the assignments they gave to their students, and their questioning strategies. The teachers were placed into two groups, high pass rate and low pass rate, based upon their prior students pass rate percentage on AP exams. The results of this study suggest some definite strategies that promote student success in Advanced Placement classes.

Aaron imig, ed.d. (George Fox University), serves as Assistant Professor of Education and as Director of Graduate Education within Corban University’s School of Education and Counseling. His interests include travel (U.S. and abroad), sports (watching, playing, coaching), reading (historical biographies and novels), and spending time with his wife, Jenn, and their three children.

His volume reveals eight indicators of knowledge acquisition. Four of these are inverse indicators that decrease as knowledge acquisition occurs: being overwhelmed, questioning self, seeking help, and microthinking. The other four are direct indicators that increase as knowledge acquisition occurs: being confident, remembering, multitasking, and speed.

news briefs President Sheldon C. Nord stated, “Bill Pugh distinguishes himself with his broad experience, deep character and friendly demeanor. In the coming weeks he will be navigating this assignment to Corban on a limited basis from his home in Arkansas, as well as with a few campus visits.”

Throughout the day she spoke during a Corban chapel service and visited students in classrooms. The day ended with a presentation to nearly 250 people, including medical professionals, who wanted to hear her story, ask questions about the Ebola virus, and learn how she treated her colleagues with the disease.

Tennant publishes two poems

Since her return to the United States in August and the mandatory 21-day isolation period that followed, Eisenhut has used speaking engagements, such as the one at Corban, to inform the public about the disease.

During fall 2014, Professor of English Collette Tennant, Ph.D., had two poems published in literary journals.

Bill Pugh hired as VP for Advancement Following an extensive nationwide search, Corban University hired its new vice president for advancement. Bill Pugh will begin his new duties on Jan. 1. Pugh has worked for Christian nonprofit organizations and businesses for more than 25 years. He currently serves as the VP of business development at Intelyx, a firm specializing in business growth through the installation and implementation of data management and analytical tools, software, systems and processes.

“Stardust” was published in the fall 2014 issue of Rattle. The poem is Tennant’s response to an interview she heard on the radio, where she heard a scientist refer to humans as simply carbon-based life forms. She said the poem was her rant against that. Her poem “Plenus” was published in October in the annual poetry journal Word Soup End Hunger. Donations through the Word Soup website support food banks nationally.

Pugh’s qualifications have helped him excel in the areas of community relations, financial operations, staff development, strategic planning, team building and fundraising.

“He prepared a way all along” she said. “God asks us to do what we can, and He honors that. It’s not the Jesus thing to turn our backs.”

Corban Students Play Major Role in Concussion Safety Program Corban exercise science majors are working with the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation (SKEF) to provide concussion training for coaches and parents in all district athletics programs.

During the past 15 years he has led multiple organizations at the senior executive level, serving as vice president of development for Familylife, president of Athletes in Action and a wealth management advisor with Merrill Lynch. Pugh attended the University of Maryland and earned a B.A. in general studies from the University of Cincinnati. He also earned a master of theology degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio, where he graduated with honors.

For many, the takeaway from Eisenhut’s visit was that even when situations seem impossible, “God does his best work” in the most challenging circumstances.

The team is part of a strategic response by SKEF to address concussion safety following the passage of Jenna’s Law by the Oregon legislature in June 2013. The law requires all sports agencies to train coaches and parents in appropriate responses to possible concussions.

Ebola physician shares her experience at Corban University On Oct. 13, Aumsville, Ore. physician and surgeon Dr. Debbie Eisenhut, M.D. came to Corban University to talk about her work as a doctor in Liberia as the Ebola outbreak started in that nation.

Additionally, the Corban students will serve as the onsite safety team at all SKEF athletic competitions. Salem-Keizer Public Schools has thousands of youth involved in its yearlong sports activities. “Our students will obtain unsurpassed applicative skills by being concussion point persons for all of the SKEF volunteer coaches and parents,” said Shannon Simmons, Ph.D., associate

news briefs professor of human performance at Corban. “They are putting what they learn in the classroom into practice and it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Corban baseball will take ministry trip to Cuba Corban University Head Baseball Coach Jeff McKay announced plans for the team to travel to Cuba for a missions trip in June, following its 2015 campaign. The destination is in the province of Guantanamo where the team has scheduled evening testimonies and opportunities to share the gospel in local churches. During the day they will play local city baseball teams. “The uniqueness of this invitation and the opportunity to travel to Cuba is a gift from God,” said McKay. “May we embrace totally his command: ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men’.” The Warriors will take 14 players, two coaches, Faculty Athletic Representative Bryce Bernard and Sports Information Director Danny Day. The trip is being coordinated through Mike Silva

International and led by a Cuban native, Pastor Glen Wilson of the Reformation Worship Center in Howell, NJ.

Tracy Smith retires as head volleyball coach At the end of the 2014 volleyball season, Corban Athletics said goodbye to a coach with two decades of experience. Tracy Smith retired as head coach of the Warriors volleyball team in early November. She left with a number of fantastic accomplishments throughout her coaching career. During the 1997 campaign, she led Corban to a 31–10 overall record and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship. The 31 wins accumulated that season remain the program record for victories in a single season to this day. Smith also led the Navy and Gold to a third-place finish at the NCCAA National Tournament in 1996 and a fourth-place finish in 1992. “It goes without saying that Tracy has been the face of Corban volleyball, coaching our team for 20 of the 40 years

Great Britain study trip planned for May 2015 Between May 13 and 28, Corban faculty members will lead an educational study tour through the heart of Great Britain. The trip includes a visit to C.S. Lewis’s house in Oxford, Jane Austen’s house at Chawton, the Globe Theatre, a John Knox tour in Edinburgh, Stonehenge, the Roman Baths, miniature golf at St. Andrews, the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, the British Museum and more. The 15day tour will be led by Collette Tennant, Ph.D., Kent Kersey, Ph.D. and Sam Baker, Ed.D. Alumni, friends and family of alumni and Corban students are invited on the tour. The cost is $2,995 and does not include airfare. A four-day side trip to Glasgow, Scotland, is also being planned. For more information, email Sam Baker at sbaker@corban.edu.

the program has been in existence,” said Corban University Director of Athletics Greg Eide. “During that time, she has been an outstanding ambassador for Corban University and a Christian mentor to hundreds of young ladies that have gone through our program. The lives that Tracy has touched are immeasurable.”

Endowments honor both students and donors Scholarships. One word can mean the world to a student. These gifts of money have impacted, emboldened and ultimately changed students’ lives. Many scholarships come about by way of what is called an endowment. Darrel White, Corban’s director of development, explains that “an endowment is money that is permanently set aside and its earnings are used for scholarships and programs.” This issue features two of many endowments set up at Corban. White says he gets excited when he sees people add to endowments, or even choose to start their own, because it increases financial support to students. Corban is dedicated to helping students get the most out of their college education. White says that endowments “are all about funding the student.”

Endowments are also a great way to remember someone special, as with the scholarships featured below, which honor two individuals. The Marvin O. Johnson Scholarship

Allowing students to answer, “All four years”

Students who are awarded the Marvin O. Johnson Scholarship not only receive money toward their tuition, they receive acknowledgment and encouragement for their hard work in school. Corban education professor Dr. Jesse Payne says that the scholarship was created for “an education student who has leadership potential.” For many recipients of this scholarship, Payne says, “it is an affirmation of their hard work.” The scholarship was started when Doris Howard’s brother, Marvin, passed away. As a teacher, Howard says, Marvin “had strong

expectations for his students.” She says Corban student recipients of the scholarship consistently impress her each time she meets them, and it’s wonderful to know

that Marvin’s money can help them. She says her biggest hope in giving this scholarship is “to see that students can graduate and go into their careers without huge debt.” One recipient is senior Janae Grieb. She demonstrated outstanding skills early in her college career, and received the scholarship as a second-semester freshman. She believes the scholarship

has not only impacted her monetarily, but has also helped her recognize qualities she may not have initially seen in herself. “It is both motivating and encouraging to see donors recognize our students’ potential and ability,” she states. The Marvin O. Johnson Scholarship helps students by encouraging them to pursue their careers with vigor. Grieb says that when people ask how long she has been at Corban, because of the scholarship she can answer with a smile, “all four years.”

James Bell Pastoral Training Scholarship A developing story

In life, we encounter a variety of stories from a variety of places. This story is in its early stage and nowhere close to being over. James Bell was pastor of Beacon Baptist Church in Tacoma, Wash. In 2004, Bell had to step down from his position due to increasing health problems. Several years later the church closed and the board of the Beacon Baptist Trust approached Corban’s School of Ministry to begin a new story. Dr. Greg Trull, Corban’s dean of ministries, says, “This special gift not only honors the ministry legacy of James Bell, it will help many graduate students follow him into church leadership.” After the sale of the church property, the members

of Beacon Baptist had significant funds that they wanted to donate to a good place. Darrel White, Corban’s director of development, notes that “James Bell graduated from Northwest Baptist Seminary in 1990, now Corban’s School of Ministry. The funds were given by the church to honor their beloved pastor and support ongoing pastoral training.” The scholarship for graduate ministry students is brand new to Corban’s School of Ministry and will be introduced to students during the 2015 school year. It is one of the first scholarships the ministry department has been able to offer. Trull is excited about the scholarship and says, “The biggest concern in ministry training is school debt. Scholarships like this help

break down the wall that keeps too many capable students from pursuing ministry.” Some donors may wonder if students ever know or care where their scholarship money is coming from. White says students are informed of how scholarships come about: “It is important for students to realize this money is coming from real people, their hard work and often their life earnings. This scholarship has the potential to seriously impact future and current ministry students.” Trull says, “Beyond being a great help to recipients, scholarships encourage all ministry students to see the impact of donors who support ministry training.”

Donor Spotlight – Holly Flores, Corban Employee and Corban Sustainer Holly Flores has a smile that lights up a room because, she says, “God is good!” As the administrative assistant for the Hoff School of Business, Holly keeps its dean, Griff Lindell, and the business department faculty humming along. Holly came to work for Corban in August 2001 in the circulation department of the library. She recently joined the school of business as administrative assistant, assuming the role of Corban’s beloved Jan Hopkins, who retired earlier this year. Holly and her husband, Michael, have been married for 28 years and have three children. Michael runs his own

business in Salem that provides services for the State of Oregon, administering a program that teaches life skills to highrisk individuals. Holly also works for their business, which now has a new office in Lane County. Between Corban, the family business and their children, she stays pretty busy. Holly still finds ways to give back. In summer 2013, Corban President Sheldon Nord gave a challenge to the faculty and staff, encouraging them to participate in giving by becoming “Corban Sustainers.” Many of these monthly gifts go toward student scholarships. “When President Nord mentioned he was invested in Corban,” says Holly, “I knew that Michael and I also believe in the difference that Corban is making, and we wanted to be part of that experience.”

Holly loves Corban University and says, “Since becoming Corban Sustainers, we feel more invested in Corban, and love knowing that we are making a difference in the world for Jesus Christ!”

Carolyn (Cunningham) Luginbuhl ’70, of Gettysburg, Ohio, suffered a stroke following stent surgery August 19, 2014. She is responding well to rehab at Brethren Retirement Community. Thank you for prayers on her behalf.

Catherine (Cox) Jacobson ’71 and Mark Jacobson ’72 relocated to Salem, Ore., in order for Mark to join the Corban campus faculty. He previously taught at Northwest Baptist Seminary in Tacoma, and Catherine retired from 29 years at Providence Health & Services. She is trying to decide how to spend this chapter of her life. They spent 42 years in Puget Sound but are pleased and a bit surprised to find themselves back in Salem.

Retirement has allowed Nancy (Bradley) Goree ’74 of Salem, Ore. to spend

Gary Bradley ’75 and Lori (Lamb) Bradley ’77 embarked on new adventures in God’s plan in 2013 when Gary retired after 35 years with the U.S. Marine Corps—not exactly where one might expect to see God’s leading for someone with degrees in pastoral education and theology. Twenty years of active duty as a combat arms officer, followed by 15 years as a civilian marine financial management analyst, were the result of a verse and a prayer in 1976: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11). After Lori and Gary were married in 1975, they actively sought full-time Christian service. God closed each of those doors. When the door opened to enter the Marine Corps, Gary felt like Paul receiving his Macedonian call in Acts 16. Corban had far fewer career programs in the 1970s, and not everyone entered some form of formal Christian ministry, but the Marine Corps? In September 1976, as Gary left Salem, Ore., for Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Quantico, Va., Lori and Gary claimed this verse and prayed that wherever God took them He would use them for His glory.

extra time with her two grandchildren, Carter and Madelynn. They have been a joy in her life! She also enjoys working in the Corban museum with Dr. Adrian Jeffers, and setting up and maintaining her church library. She also plays piano for her church’s worship team.

sergeant instructor about-faced and left; not another word was said. The next 10 weeks were grueling in earning Gary’s commission as a Marine officer, and a blessing for the number of times he got to interact and pray with the other candidates. This was only the beginning of God’s plan for the Bradleys in the Marine Corps. God kept answering their prayers, because they always found wonderful believers at every duty station (both Marines and civilians), a Bible-based church and service opportunities. These 35 years, plus a year between the two parts of his Marine Corps career spent as the chief financial officer of a nonprofit organization, were amazing as they experienced God’s unfolding plan. Gary has undergone total replacement of both knees and one hip, a major foot surgery and a surgery to repair a finger due to service-connected conditions. Gary and Lori are now able to spend more time with their two sons and grandkids, visit family, take the opportunity to see many beautiful places of God’s creation in America and continue to serve in the local church. Please pray daily for our brothers and sisters in Christ who serve in our military. Semper Fi.

God’s first test of Gary’s faith came the first day of OCS, when 25 aspiring candidates sat on the floor in the middle of a WWII-era barracks. The sergeant instructor walked in and asked a single question: “Which one of you is the preacher?” With his education background known to the company commander and the instructors, Gary assumed he was the one and raised his hand. The other candidates looked at Gary, and the Gary and Lori Bradley 36

class notes James Odell ’74, of Indianapolis, Ind., retired after teaching in an inner-city Bible college for 24 years. He is a retired U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain who served seven years active duty in Desert Storm, Bosnia, Honduras, and Kuwait. He currently teaches adult Bible studies at his church and has a small woodworking shop at home.

Dave Bertolini ’04 became senior pastor at Grace Community Church in Dallas, Ore., in September 2013, after graduating with his MDiv from Western Seminary in the spring. Prior to that, he worked at Grace in the roles of youth pastor and associate pastor. Amy (Davis) Bertolini ’05 and Dave love being parents to Callie and Maggie. They enjoy spending family time at the beach, in parks or riding the escalator at the mall (the girls are still easy to entertain). In ad-

dition to regular ministry at Grace, Amy and Dave have had the privilege of doing premarital counseling for several former youth group kids this year, bringing back fond memories of their own counseling with Dr. Greg and Tiffany Trull. Dave has also officiated at lots of weddings.

Since graduation, Danielle (Smith) Cornelius ’04 has been married 10 years, had four kids and moved to three different states. Her husband, Andrew Cornelius ’04, completed medical school in 2008 and orthopedic residency in 2013. They moved back to Alaska to be close to family and served four years in the Air Force. They have attended church in each state and currently are back at Danielle’s childhood church, Chapel by the Sea. In the limited amount of free time they have had over the years, they have traveled from coast to coast with their children, visiting family and friends.

Andrew enjoys hunting and fishing when he is able. Danielle is enjoying staying home and being a mom, and school and church activities keep them busy. Andrew is teaching downhill skiing to the three older kids.

Joe Piedmont ’12 was promoted to director of operations for Buck Knives. Joe started at Buck after completing his MBA and was hired as a lead designer. He first made contact with Buck as he was working through a project in an entrepreneurship class, and looking for partners to manufacture his knife designs. The company was so impressed with him that they offered him a job.

Jacob Lyda ’14 was hired as an accounting clerk at Dr. Martens Airwair headquarters in Portland, Ore.

Sherrie Sprenger ’07 ADP was featured in Salem’s local paper, the Statesman Journal. The editorial said, “The Scio Republican is solidly grounded, having a family and an active life outside the State Capitol, and she works diligently on behalf of House District 17, which she has served since 2008.” They praised her as someone who is an advocate for teachers and is not focused on being in the limelight, but on helping explain how legislations positively and negatively affect Oregon. The paper finished by recommending Sprenger for re-election, saying, “Sherrie Sprenger has been an effective legislator for the district and an effective spokeswoman for rural Oregon. She deserves re-election at the Nov. 4 General Election.”—Quotes 10/10/2014 Statesman Journal by Anna Reed. Representative Sprenger successfully won her re-election on Nov. 4.
