THE CONCRETE

[HABITAT] UNIT

ECOLOGICALLY OPPORTUNISTIC DIVERSITY OF UNIT INFRASTRUCTURE This project explores the potential and possibilities of a wildly poised urban infrastructure through the exploration of an individual construction unit. From the individual unit, the tectonic conditions of ‘habitat’ will enlighten an exploration of structure and performance to adapt the infrastructure of the city, and the units by which we build.

Phase 1: Host Research

Phase 2: Informed Speculation

This cast is a representation of a possible habitat niche which is an ideal condition for the banded tailed pigeon to use for nesting. The use of materials like concrete (Quick Crete) is an important aspect in the creation of an artificial habitat that can be retrofitted to the host species needs.

Phase 2: Informed Speculation

This cast is a representation of possible ledges that the band tailed pigeon can find suitable for perching and resting. The use of concrete creates at course texture that is similar to the texture of tree back. This aspect is important in the creation of artificial habitats.

Phase 2: Informed Speculation

In this third casting of possible habitat opportunities, the combination of ledges and niches provides for a suitable habitat for the band tailed pigeon that can be adapted to a CMU.

Phase 3: CMU Redo

INFRASTRUCTURAL TYPOLOGY POINTS OF INTEREST

As the world changes, and as the population grows, it’s clear that the separation between wildlife habitat and human habitat have to be integrated. With the passing of time and as old infrastructure begins to fail, a new multiple functional approach needs to be implemented. As new infrastructure is developed for future generations the issues of ecology and human environment need to be addressed. One opportunity is freeway overpasses where large would be to reengineering the columns of freeways to house pigeons.
