CONCEPT THREADING CONNECTIONS La Canada High school + United Methodist Church

Our design for the La Canada/United Methodist Church Site intends to reveal the processes of water; both natural (quad area and bioswale) and man-made hydrological processes (Membrane bio-reactor) through low impact design elements Our design spans from the United Methodist Church and encompasses the north west side of La Canada High School and extends into the main quad area.

Threading Connections MASTER PLANPlan

La Canada High School + United Methodist Church

Quad Area The design of the quad area is meant to enhance the usability of the current space as well as inform of the natural process of natural filtration and purification that the water that falls down in the nearby mountains. Doing this will help us develop a relationship with the other end of the thread by creating a reference to natural and man-made filtration techniques.

United Methodist Church The area that is currently vacant has been redesigned to allow for the Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) to be split into 3 different structures. Dividing the MBRs will allow us to develop a personal scale that people can walk through, explore, and learn from.

Connection to School Berkshire Avenue lies between the MBR site and La Canada High School. In order to reestablish this connection we designed a visual cue that will hint at the location/pathway of the effluence from the MBR that can be seen from either the Church or the high school. Thread-La Canada High School Fields We created a pathway from the south side of the high school field to the center of campus by circumnavigating the baseball fields. The pathway will parallel a bioswale that we have along the perimeter of the school. This pathway will enhance the walkability and access to this area of the school while also increasing the users overall knowledge of various water topics (explained in design details).

The Church site will consists of: -Permeable paved pathway -Bioswale Path/Area -Oak plantings accenting the existing Oak tree -Plantings surrounding the MBR on the south and east facing sides -Bioswale near Bus Drop off -Additional parking (Approx. 3) that will allow utility vehicles to back into the area when maintenance is required on the MBR

SITE PLAN PROPOSED MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR La Canada High School + United Methodist Church

Native Plantings

The United Methodist Church will be the site for the MBRs. We are proposing that the MBR be split into 3 different areas nearby each other. Doing this will allow us to develop circulation that will lead the visitors around the MBR and through different areas of plantings that can be used to lower the use of water as well as be an enhanced visual area for the visitors of the church.

SITE PLAN: PROPOSED BIO-SWALE SYSTEM La Canada High school + United Methodist Church Thread-La Canada High School Fields We created a pathway from the south side of the high school field to the center of campus by circumnavigating the baseball fields. The pathway will parallel a bioswale that we have along the perimeter of the school. This pathway will enhance the walkability and access to this area of the school while also increasing the users overall knowledge of various water topics (explained in design details).

The Thread’s walkway is textured from large stoned pebbles to smaller exposed aggregate. This layering of texture is reference to the natural purification stages that water goes through

To show the natural grade that we will be using throughout The Thread for our bioswale we will use poles that are the same height that will reveal the change in elevation, relative to wherever the user is

The users will be able to walk over the bioswales for a more in depth experience by using the wooden decks that go over each bioswale

PHASING STRATEGY

La Canada High School + United Methodist Church

PHASE 1-MBR/CHURCH SITE

Phase 1 the church site and MBR location needs to be addressed. The plantings around the MBR and the church will be all California natives and the sidewalk along Berskshire will be made to match the walkway around the MBR. Information about the MBR and the native plantings will all be put in during this phase as well.

PHASE 2

PHASE 3

PHASE 2-QUAD/ENTRANCE

Phase 2 consists of the front entrance to La Canada High School as well as the lunch quad area. The front entrance of the school will be planted with California natives. The lunch quad area will be improved by raising the turf to allow for form references to the local mountains. The walkways in both the quad and the front entrance will be permeable pavers.

PHASE 3-CONNECTION

Phase 3 will be the last phase which will complete the connection between the church/MBR site and the La Canada quad/front entrance. The bioswales will be constructed and all the remaining plantings (California natives) will be placed around the walkway (thread).
