ECO-TECHNICAL SYSTEM VILLAGE PROJECT (Re)Generative/Resilient Urbanism

Signal Hill, California

The goal of this project is to design a resilient neighborhood, with a mix of features and uses, that regenerates the environmental degradation caused by the extraction of oil and industrial uses on the site. The Challenge is to develop a large multiuse urban space with a sense of identity and which makes clear connections to adjacent properties. At The same time, the design should be sensitive to cultural context, safety issues, user preferences and the diversity of the community.

LOCATIONS OF OIL PUMPS ON SITE

BROWNFIELD SITE AT SIGNAL HILL

DO TO THE DRILLING AND PUMPING OF OIL ON THIS LAND, THE SITE HAS BECOME A BRIOWNFIELD WHICH IS HAZARDOUS TO LIVING FORMS. AS A RESPONSE TO THIS BEFORE ANYTHING CAN BE BUILT ON THE SITE, THE SITE MUST BE CLEANED UP BY THE PROCESS OF PHYTO-REMEDIATION, WHICH IS THE USE OF PLANTS TO CLEAN OUT CONTAMINANTS IN THE SOIL VIA NATURAL OCCURRING PROCESSES SUCH AS PHYTO- VOLATILIZATION, PHYTO- DEGRADATION, PHYTO- EXTRACTION, AND PHYTOSTABILIZATION.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF PHYTOREMEDIATION: 1. COST OF EXCAVATION & FILL VS COST OF PHYTOREMEDIATION 2. ADDS AESTHETIC BEAUTY 3. IMPROVED AIR QUALITY

PREVENT SOIL EROSION

4. REDUCTION OF STORM WATER RUN-OFF

PHYTO-REMEDIATION PROCESS TESTING:

PHYTO-REMEDIATION PLANTING PROCESS:

1. GATHER 4 SAMPLES PER EVERY 400 SQ.FT OF LAND

4. PLANT FIRST SET OF PLANTS IN AREAS WITH THE CONTAMINANTS & APPROPRIATE PLANTS NEEDED 5. AROUND 14 WEEKS PLANTS MAY ALREADY BE SATURATED WITH HEAVY METALS, PCBS AND OTHER TOXINS. REMOVE PLANTS. 6. HYPERACCUMULATOR PLANTS WILL STORE TOXINS IN THEIR PLANT TISSUE & WILL NEED TO BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY. LOCATE LOCAL SPECIAL WASTE DROP-OFF SITE AND DISPOSE OF THE TOXIC PLANT MATERIAL. 7. RETEST SOIL AT THE END OF THE GROWING SEASON AND MONITOR IMPROVEMENTS AND REPEAT PROCESS OVER UNTIL THE SITE IS FIT FOR THE END LAND USE.

MANIFESTO[INTENT]

CREATE A MULTI FUNCTIONAL LANDSCAPE THAT IS INTEGRATED INTO ONE SINGLE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE WHOLE SITE THROUGH MEANS OF PUBLIC, HOUSING DENSITY, AND AGRICULTURAL USES OF LAND THAT ARE INTERTWINED TO CREATE A LANDSCAPE THAT IS NOT ONLY SELF SUSTAINING BUT IS ALSO HAS THE ABILITY TO BECOME REGENERATIVE WHICH IN TURN BECOMES THE FIRST SITE TO BECOME A “HUB SITE” WHERE PEOPLE DON’THAVE TO LEAVE OR HAVE LITTLE NEED TO TRAVEL. BASICALLY A SITE SHOULD BECOME A HUB, WHICH CAN HAVE REGIONAL APPLICATIONS IN WHICH A SYSTEM OF HUBS CAN BE CONNECTED TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF THE POPULATION OF THE WORLD IN 2050.

p4 p6 p3

REGIONAL APPLICATIONS[NETWORKS] SITE DESIGN SHOULD INCORPORATE EVERYTHING THAT THE COMMON HUMAN NEEDS LIKE RECREATION, COMMERCIAL, HOUSING AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION BUT IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY. SO AS A RESULT ONE DOES NOT NEED TO TRAVEL LONG DISTANCES FOR BASIC NEEDS WHICH IN TURNS HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT BY REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS AND REDUCES OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS. ANOTHER PRINCIPAL THAT SHOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO A SITE IS A THE ABILITY FOR A LANDSCAPE TO REGENERATE IT’S SELF THROUGH MEANS OF CAPTURING WATER AND CLEANING IT AND REUSING IT THROUGH THE SITE FOR MULTIPURPOSE USES LIKE IRRIGATION, HUMAN USES AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. AS A RESULT THESE PRINCIPALS CAN BE ADOPTED BY OTHER SITES, THUS CREATING A NETWORK OF INTERCONNECTED SITES THAT ARE NOT ONLY SUSTAINABLE BUT REGENERATIVE AS WELL.

COMPOST PROCESS AND DISTRIBUTION DIAGRAM

COMPOST GROUNDS PERSPECTIVE COMPOST IS PRODUCED AND DISTRIBUTED ON A WEEKLY BASE TO THE RESIDENTS AND OTHER LOCAL BUSINESS THAT ARE IN NEED OF COMPOST.

COMPOST PROCESS AND DISTRIBUTION

THE FUNCTION OF THE COMPOST FIELDS ARE TO PROVIDE THE RESIDENTS OF THE SITE WITH RICH AND ORGANIC SOIL FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THEIR PERSONAL GREEN HOUSE CROPS BY USING THE WASTE FROM THEIR SELVES, WHICH INCLUDES TRASH, PLANT MATERIAL AND ANY OTHER WASTE THAT CAN BE COMPOSTED.

COMPOST CONTAINERS ARE THE OIL WELLS, THAT ONCE DOMINATED THE SITE BUT NOW ARE REVERSED ENGINEERED TO MIX SOIL RATHER THAN PUMP OIL.

SOLAR ENERGY INFORMATION

TOTAL ROOF AREA IS 120,273SQ. FT. (ASSUME ONLY 80% USE OF ROOF) COMMON U.S FAMILY ENERGY USE IS 890kwh IN 2011. COMMON U.S FAMILY ENERGY USE IN 2050 IS 800kwh. USING SOLAR TECH “SPMO 85p SOLAR MODEL” ENERGY CAPTURED IS 85 WATTS PER DAY. ESTIMATING 15% EFFICIENCY X 20,045 SOLAR PANELS PROVIDES A TOTAL OF 24,054kwh A YEAR SITE UNIT CONSUMPTION EQUALS 192 UNITS X 800kwh WHICH EQUALS 153,600kwh

HOUSING INFORMATION

BUILDING EQUAL SIX, EACH BETWEEN FOUR TO SEVEN LEVELS AND THREE LEVELS OF UNDERGROUND PARKING. A TOTAL OF 192 UINTS BUILT FOR FAMILIES OF THREE WHICH IS A TOTAL OF 576 RESIDENTS. THERE IS 796 PARKING SPOTS PER LEVEL (6’ X 8’) BY 2050 CARS WILL BE SMALLER THAN PRESENT DAY.

WATER CIRCULATION DIAGRAM SITE PLAN

WATER FROM THE RESIDENTIAL/VERTICAL FARMING BUILDING IS TO BE PIPED OUT INTO THE GREY WATER TREATMENT TERRACES WHERE PLANTS WITH PHYTOREMEDIATION PROPERTIES CAN TREAT AND REMOVE THE POLLUTES FROM THE WATER THEREFORE TREATING THE WATER WITH A NATURAL SYSTEM OF ONLY PLANTS WHICH ELSE ENERGY DEPENDENT.
