Woman

A Q&A WITH THE SUPER TALENTED LESLIE MANN WHO STARS IN NEW HIT COMEDY THE OTHER WOMAN. IN AN EXCLUSIVE CORE INTERVIEW THE ACTRESS TALKS INFIDELITY, FEMALE FRIENDS AND COMEDY...

Q: How would you describe your character and her journey? A: “Kate is a very optimistic person, who is excited about life and happy with her husband Mark. But she is living in a bubble. Her life is all about making her husband happy and I think she’s lost herself. Suddenly everything is completely turned upside down when she finds out that her husband is having an affair with Cameron Diaz’s character, Carly, who doesn't know that Mark is married. Her whole world falls apart. Carly and Kate discover each other’s existence and they join forces to figure out what Mark is up to. Then they find out he has a third mistress (Kate Upton) and they all come together. To figure out how they’re going to deal with the situation and come to grips with what’s happening, these women support Kate in a way that helps her to grow and to work

through all the suffering she is going through. I had so much fun playing this character. I was in a good mood every day.” Q: Kate is quite traditional isn’t she? A: “She is old fashioned yes, but then she goes on a great journey and becomes a fully formed woman by the end of the story. Kate doesn’t have kids but it’s still not an easy job. I wouldn’t look down on women or men or judge people who are doing that job, being at home, and say, ‘oh that’s nothing; you’re not working,’ because they’re working very hard. It shouldn’t be a thankless job.” Q: Do you think being at home is harder than acting? A: “Oh yes for me it is so much easier to go to work than it is to be at home

(laughs). It is a lot of work running a home. When I’m not working, I’m raising my kids, keeping the house together and keeping our lives afloat. People who are doing that job are working their asses off. And raising kids is fun, but also hard. From the time they're born you don't sleep. You give up everything that you do for yourself, to give to your kids. That is a really great thing and it probably makes you a better person in a lot of ways, because you have to be selfless, but it's taxing.” Q: How did you, Cameron and Kate get on together during the filming of THE oTHER WomAN? A: “I fell in love with Cameron and Kate. We’re so supportive of one another, and we’ve been like that since day one. They’re really good girls. About three weeks after we wrapped the movie, I was sitting in my family room at home, and I started thinking about Kate and Cameron. I just burst into tears, because I missed them so much.’ Q: How important are your friends to you? A: “Friendship is so important. When I had little kids, I wasn’t focused as much on my girlfriends because we all had young children and they swallow you whole (laughs). You have no life when they are little. As they got a little older, my friends and I accidentally started a monthly girls’ get-together. Now we have to do it every month. We support each other. We’re always there for each other. It’s a different understanding and support from the kind I get from my husband. What I get in my relationship with my husband is great, but my girlfriends are everything to me. I love these women and I will be friends with them for the rest of my life.” Q: What do you actually do with your friends?

A: “We usually book a hotel room, and we check in as early as we can, sometimes around ten thirty in the morning. We sit there for hours and hours and hours, until two in the morning and talk and talk and talk and drink wine. We work through all our problems, everything that is going on in our lives, and we have fun with each other. We talk about what we're going through, what we're struggling with, what we're trying to accomplish: kids, families, husbands, just get it all off of our chest. It’s very grounding.” Q: In another hilarious scene you and Cameron are hiding in the bushes. Was that challenging? A: “That’s another moment when Nick said, ‘the bigger the better.’ The gardeners had caught Cameron and I (Carly and Kate) spying on my husband at the house, so we had to stop in our tracks where we were, in the bushes. Cameron was lying down, and I was in between her legs, holding up her legs, as if they were my legs (laughs). She’s very flexible, so I could just bend them all over the place. It was funny. I think she just got a little scratched up though.” Q: Any more memorable moments? A: “In another scene Cameron is hiding underneath my dress. I am wearing a wedding dress. It was harder for her than me because it was really hot and sweaty under there! There was no ventilation. There was a lot of tulle and heavy fabric in that dress and I felt so bad for her. It’s not just anyone that I would allow to go underneath my dress. That’s what I told her and she said the same thing to me, too. She said, ‘I wouldn’t just do this with anyone.’ We were working very closely together and it was great.” Q: you are such a natural at comedy and

you’ve have been compared to Lucille Ball and goldie Hawn, are you big fans of theirs? A: “That is so flattering. I am a big fan of Lucille Ball. Who isn’t? I grew up watching I LOVE LUCY and I love Goldie Hawn.” Q: off the set, I hear there were some funny moments (perhaps not so funny for you at the time) because you were allergic to your leading man? A: “I was allergic to Nikolaj! At first I thought it would be fun kissing Nikolaj (Coster-Waldau), because he’s very cute, so handsome ... and I’ve been married for seventeen years. So I was looking forward to that. Then I kissed him and I felt a burning kind of feeling and I realized I had broken out in hives, where his face had touched mine. They washed his face, because they thought it could have been his aftershave, and we kissed again. Again there were hives all over my face from his face. I’m allergic to his stubble or some-

thing. He felt very bad about it and thought maybe his beard was too rough. I’m also allergic to dogs so he thought maybe he had been kissing the dog that is also in the film (a Great Dane) and then had kissed me afterwards, because every time either Nikolaj or the dog touched me, I would break out in hives.” Q: What is your perspective on the storyline and its focus on infidelity, people who cheat in relationships? A: “I don’t know. I don’t judge. Everybody makes choices for different reasons. Sometimes people stay in relationships, and sometimes they don’t. Everybody is on their own path and growing when they are ready to grow. Sometimes if you find out your husband or wife is cheating and you’re not ready to grow, you just wait a beat until you are ready and you move on. Or sometimes, you don’t move on. Everybody needs to do things in their own time.” www.theotherwomanmovie.com

Team talk! NEW DEXYS BOOK CELEBRATES THE SEMINAL SEARCHING FOR THE YOUNG SOUL REBELS ALBUM... I am so proud to be part of this excellent book which celebrates one of my favourite albums of all time – the seminal 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' by the first incarnation of Dexys Midnight Runners. Predominantly a photographic coffee table book – or caff table book should I say – it captures the band in caffs, on stage, bunking trains and generally hanging together “en masse” – in monochrome documentary style by photographer Mike Laye. Redolent of 50’s shots of the Bronx and the gritty realism of Elia Kazan’s ‘On The Waterfront’, the images capture perfectly the essence and ultimately the mythology of the band from their arrival in London and the debut single ‘Dance Stance’, to the refining of the gang attire, the live shows and the ultimate demise following the recording and touring of the album. Original band member Geoff Blythe has

written - eloquently and honestly - his own version of events and covers the origins of the band name, working with manager Bernie Rhodes, the recording of the album, the blagging of the master tapes, the tour and the eventual split. Mike Laye - as well as being an excellent photographer - is also a great wordsmith and his memories of the band – and in particular his rather amusing story about the recording of the ‘Geno' video – are fascinating. Elsewhere there are contributions from manager and promoter Dave Corke, Archie Brown, Paolo Hewitt, Pete Mckenna, Ian Snowball and various others – including myself - who have penned their own thoughts on what this album means to them. If 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels' means as much to you as it does me, then this book is an essential purchase. To order visit: www.countdownbooks.com

Tree House to Treasures Traditional and unique Scottish jewellery from Two Skies Design available to order online. Tell us about Two Skies Design Crawling down a mine shaft, being chased by mafia and losing most of your money to your “armed guard” is not the stuff of an average 9-5 job. Few would probably rate it as their dream job. But it is for Adam McIntosh, the founder of Two Skies. Shortly to feature in the BBC’s Coast programme, Two Skies is a jewellery business with a difference. Its catch phrase of “collected with conscience and crafted with love” is not some airy-fairy statement - it’s based on the fact that

Adam really has made sure that he is prepared to go down the same mines as the people he buys from. And sometimes these are definitely not the ones to tell your mother about! These gritty adventures lying behind each of the stones collected, plus the environmental and ethical ethos of the business, set Two Skies apart from most jewellery businesses. As if that wasn’t enough they also make really unique jewellery. The designs include contemporary and Celtic works using Scottish Green Marble - a white serpentine

marble that is collected on the west of Scotland and “Forever Leaves” – skeletonised leaves covered in precious metals. Tell us about Two Skies Design founder Adam mcIntosh. As you would expect from someone who lives in a tree-house on an organic farm Adam is not your average businessman. After leaving school aged 18, and with £150 in his pocket, Adam left to go travelling the world. He was given the name “Two Skies” by Stone Eagle, the warrior chief of the Mi'kmaq native Americans who said he would always have a sky over him when he travelled and a sky in his native Scotland. Somehow this just seemed a natural name for the business idea that had emerged during his travels - that of collecting and selling the gems that he had always been so passionate about. His first deal was sealed in Australia where he met a lucky opal miner who had just hit a seam of opal worth around $500,000. For the price of a couple of beers at the local pub Adam was given all the low-grade opals. With his newfound treasure Adam set off home for Scotland and set up Two Skies Design. How did he start selling his jewellery? This is very much a case of small acorns growing into oak trees. The early days of Two Skies Design were a humble blanket on the street of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh but the sales from the first opals sparked further trips around the world in the search for more gems and treasures. All of these individual gems have their stories – from the beautiful Larimer stone that is only found in two square kilometres of the planet (making it rarer than diamonds) to the unique blue amber that is mined in the Dominican Republic. Nowadays Two Skies sells around 50,000 pieces a year across the world and employs 9 staff in the UK, but Adam likes nothing better than to be on the

market stall on the Royal Mile selling to customers who want to hear the stories on how their gems have been found and manufactured. What has been your biggest achievement so far? One of the core product lines for Two Skies is Scottish Green Marble - a beautiful stone that seems to mirror the Scottish landscape. Two Skies’ tales of free diving down to the sea-bed to collect it, together with the fact that Green Marble is one of Scotland’s few natural gemstones, attracted the interest of the BBC. The film shot on Iona will be televised in July and more episodes are currently being planned with Coast. There are also plans afoot for an eight series documentary for a worldwide audience. What has been the best recent discovery for Two Skies? It’s always exciting to find new sources – particularly on your doorstep. Two Skies has recently started manufacturing a Scottish stone called Lewisian – collected from one of the most ancient rocks in the world in Scotland’s outer Hebrides. But what is even more exciting is that Two Skies has just discovered a source of Scottish red Garnets which are currently being transformed into finished jewellery. Where can the jewellery be purchsed from? Two Skies sells online, in markets in Edinburgh and through retail outlets in over 20 countries around the world. To view the full collection and to purchase online visit: www.twoskiesdesign.com or visit them on Twitter or Facebook.

By George, now you’re talking... Financial advice with Tom Munro www.tommunro.co.uk George Osborne’s recent budget announcement threw up a number of surprises, and in one of the most beneficial to savers in living memory, new guidelines on pension and ISA accounts will enable you to plan ahead to provide a tax-efficient income stream for that crucial time when your working days have ended. There were so many changes introduced, and too many to cover here, but over the coming months rest-assured I will highlight the main opportunities for you. Starting with personal pension changes already implemented from 27th March which are: Smaller valued pension funds - if the total of all your pension savings is less than £30,000 you’ll be able to take this all as a lump sum if you have reached the age of 60. 25% of the lump sum will be tax free and the remaining amount will be taxed as income. This is an increase to the previous limit set at £18,000. multiple small pension pots - if you hold small private pensions worth under £2,000 you were, prior to the Budget, able to take two of these as a lump sum. Again 25% would be paid tax-free with the remaining amount subject to income tax. The Budget has increased the limits to allow savings of up to £10,000 to be treated as a small

pension pot. It has also increased the number of small pots that can be taken to three. Access to all of your pension fund - From April 2015, those who have reached retirement age applicable to personal pension plans (currently 55) you will have the option to take your entire pension fund as a lump sum. Currently this is only available to individuals who have smaller pension pots as referred to above. A tax-free lump sum of 25% of the fund will still be available and the remaining funds will be taxed as income, allowing you to decide when and how much income you take at a time that’s right for you. This was the biggest surprise of all and puts an end to the lottery of annuity purchase at retirement, an extremely unpopular piece of legislation forcing the individual at retirement into a contract where income levels have more than halved over the past decade as a result of low-interest rates. Time to blow the dust off those old pension documents to see what you are entitled to. See you next month.

we are relaunching!

Core magazine was launched in 2006 to offer local advertisers a full colour, cost-effective alternative to advertising with the local press. An ethos of offering high quality editorial with contemporary presentation was the key factor in quickly establishing Core as the essential monthly lifestyle publication in North Lanarkshire. This unique combination of superior style/content and high quality advertising, allied to a carefully conceived distribution demographic ensured that Core quickly became the No 1 vehicle for advertisers aiming to increase the proďŹ tability of their business and establish product/brand awareness within the locale. Our editorial has a wide-ranging appeal, which includes quality features on Film, Fashion, Food & Drink, music, Health and money Advice, as well as regular Celebrity Interviews and monthly Competitions. At Core we are also very clear about supporting local business: living and working in the community we have a vested interest in offering local businesses the opportunity to thrive and become successful in an environment that has become increasingly precarious. That is why our advertisers are loyal: they not only see the benefits of real QuALITy advertising - they also see the financial returns from advertising in the most popular publication in the area. Core Magazine is full colour, beautifully printed on 130gms gloss paper throughout and delivered every month to the Core of the community.
