Star

maker SHAILENE WOODLEY ON PLAYING HAZEL, THE POWER OF YOUNG LOVE, AND HER BRILLIANT CAREER.

The gifted actress Shailene Woodley stars opposite Ansel Elgort in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, a life-affirming story about Hazel and Augustus, teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. how exciting was it getting the part? I really, really wanted the role. I fell in love with the script when I read it almost two years ago and then I immediately read the book. I saw this as an opportunity to play an in depth, challenging character. The story had so many important, powerful messages. I wanted the role so badly that I sent John Green a long email about how I had to play Hazel. Then later I said, ‘Please let me audition, I’ll be a PA.’ I would’ve been an extra or a caterer. I said: ‘Let me do anything.’ And then finally I met the director, Josh Boone. I left the meeting

feeling really good, because I knew I had done everything I could possibly could to bring Hazel to life. But as an actor, you’re either right for a role or you’re not right for a role. It is completely out of your control, so you really have to let go and surrender to the process. Luckily, I got the part! Who is hazel? What kind of girl is she? Hazel is somebody who knows who she is and understands at a young age that life is fleeting and that none of it matters really and that we’re all insignificant. She realizes that to waste your time worrying or

stressing about anything, or trying to make a mark on the world is just a waste of time, because there’s no way to guarantee anything. So she lives for the small moments and she appreciates those moments. I think it is a huge thing for someone to understand that at such a young age. I found the character very inspiring. And I really related to her sarcasm and dry wit. What is the film about? It is a cancer movie that’s not about cancer. It doesn’t focus on death, it celebrates life. We wanted to bring light to a situation that is often looked at in a dark way. Hazel meets Augustus at a support group, and they immediately have a beautiful connection and recognize something in each other. Obviously they are both going through a hard time physically, but they’re both witty and they’re both strong and opinionated. They instantly have an argumentative, combative love affair. I think that is so important in a relationship. They connect because they have a lot of similar beliefs, but they also have a lot of different beliefs and that allows their love to blossom. What did you think of the book and the way in which john Green connects with young readers? People always say that he gives teenagers a valid voice, but I think that John Green is one of the very few people who actually hears the voices of adolescents. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is one of the best books I have ever read. John can empathize and authentically listen to others and that gives him an amazing ability to bring characters to life in a very realistic way. Even though John is not a teenager, he understands what they are going through. Do you think love between teenagers, the

kind that hazel and augustus experience, can be as real and significant as love between adults? I think it is just as real. As an adult, I haven’t been in a relationship. But I do know that the relationships I had as a teenager were very real. Teenagers are much more free, much more willing to be open. It is such a big deal to be in love for the first time and to experience those strong feelings and be vulnerable with someone for the first time. Teenagers are more malleable, and there is playful nature to their relationships. As adults we’re more rigid and more jaded. A lot of adult relationships don’t have that playful element. There is great chemistry between you and your young leading man, ansel elgort. you worked together previously on DiVerGenT. Did that make it easier? It was awesome working with Ansel. We became really close on DIVERGENT. He brought a lot of light to my life on the set of that movie, because it was cold and miserable filming in Chicago. It was a hard shoot and we became good friends. We naturally have an affinity and a really pure, strong friendship and respect and pride in one another. Going straight from that film to THE FAULT IN OUR STARS was such a gift, because we were comfortable around each other without having to go through the process of breaking down walls and figuring each other out. There was no adjustment necessary and we were able to jump into the characters. Because we respect each other so much, we had great chemistry and it was easy. It was fun because we got to be really creative and expressive every day. how did you prepare for the role? The only preparation I did was physical, like learning how to talk without a lot of

10 CoRE MagazInE JUNE 2014 I TO ADVERTISE CALL: 07776 274 856

CORE ExClUsIvE

oxygen, because Hazel has trouble breathing. I also learned how to pull around an oxygen tank everywhere. It helped me empathize with Hazel. I realized that to breathe naturally is such a gift. But emotionally, acting is always about learning the lines and then just listening to what the other actors are saying and reacting honestly to whatever they’re doing. It is about authentic listening. Did you talk to teenagers with cancer? I met with people who were in similar situations as Hazel, to learn about what she is going through. We’d get coffee and have lunch. Actually the support group in the movie is made up of people who are either in remission or have been through cancer in the past. But we didn’t really talk about cancer, we talked more about life. The second that you realize you don’t need to ask someone what it is like to have cancer; you get to know them as a human being. You realize, ‘Oh my God, you’re the same teenager as I was. You’re angsty. I

was angsty when I was your age. Yes you’re dealing with something that is so above and beyond anything that I dealt with at that age, as far as health goes, but that’s not who your heart is.’ I learned that cancer doesn’t define people. They’re normal people going through the normal processes of life. The film is very poignant, but there are some hilarious scenes too, any memorable ones for you? There is a scene where Ansel and I get to throw eggs at a girl’s car, which was great fun, because that’s such a teenage thing to do. We are taking revenge on her because of something she did to our friend Isaac (Nat Wolff). There is so much humor in the film, which is great and very real. Life is funny - as well as being tragic and confusing. This movie explores all of that. It shows how every moment has to be full of love and life and how there’s no sense in wallowing around in pity. ///

Fruitvale Station Review by Rachel Salveta A true story about a young man being unjustly shot by a police officer at an Oakland subway station may not have been the easiest subject matter for a directorial debut, however Ryan Coogler certainly seems to have risen to the occasion. 'Fruitvale Station' is an honest and gripping film about someone with a shameful past he wants to escape and a future he wishes to have. With time spent in prison and a life of drugs and wrong doing, Oscar Grant(Michael B Jordan) wakes up on the morning of December 31st 2008 and realises this is not the life he wants for himself and his family however what he doesn't know is this will be his last day on earth. As the day plays out we see him desperately trying to be a better partner to his girlfriend, a stable father to his daughter and a loving son to his mother however what we also see is how difficult change really is and the inner

turmoil that he faces between his past and his present. As the evening draws to a close it is his last decision to take the subway home that becomes the biggest mistake of his life. Michael B Jordan's portrayal of this tragic character is nothing short of superb as he manages to pack an emotional punch into every scene and allows a rare glimpse into a life that was taken away too soon. The other stand out performances come from Octavia Spencer and Melonie Diaz who play the main women in his life; his mother and his girlfriend. 'Fruitvale Station' goes beyond the headlines and lets us see the human story of this young man just trying to make things right. It is a thought provoking and emotional film that raises many questions and harsh realities about society today. A definite one to watch.

star struck ed sheeran on ‘the fault in our stars’, familY, fiction, films and PhilosoPhY. Q: How did you get involved in this project? a: “Julie greenwald, who runs atlantic Records, my record label, kept saying: ‘have you read this book, tHE FaUlt In oUR staRs? You need to read this book, it’s amazing. they’ve made a movie of it.’ she just kept saying it and then eventually I watched the film and it is amazing! I had a bit of an emotional breakdown and tweeted about it, and I saw the huge reaction just from one tweet. I cracked! I was like, ‘cool, let’s do it.’ I realized there was a pretty sizeable fan base for the book and the upcoming film. I was so excited that I was asked to write a song for the film. I wrote ‘all of the stars’ and I’m very glad to be involved.” Q: What struck you about the movie? a: “I find that you tend to see the same sort of romcom in Hollywood; the usual boy-meets-girl story is overplayed. they always have the same sort of story and the same sort of structure. this movie, tHE FaUlt In oUR staRs, is unconventional; it is so different and so human. It is not just the usual formula of two Hollywood a-listers falling in love and then having a little bit of a problem and then resolving everything at the end. Everything that’s happening in the story is realistic. It is about two kids who are desperately trying to find love and cling on to life. It’s heart-breaking, but an amazing tale.” Q: What did you set out to accomplish with the song? a: “I wanted to make a very emotive song that would make people cry, I guess, if the movie doesn’t do that anyway. For people who love the book and love the movie, I hope this song makes them cry. that’s the goal. You wouldn’t watch the film if you didn’t want to cry and have a good release. so I hope the song gives people a release. I wanted something very anthemic and euphoric to lead the audience out of the

CORE MUsIC

film and to give it emotion.” Q: Can you talk about the inspiration for the song? a: “the tone is inspired by the final scenes of the film. there is a lot of stuff going on and it shows how wherever you are in the world, you’re staring up at the same stars. I guess that would be the cheesy answer to that question!” Q: What is a great song and what can it contribute to a movie? a: “I think a great song can bring lots of different elements to a movie if it’s in the right place. sometimes it can be a good song, but it’s in the wrong place, or sometimes it’s a bad song in the right place. I think when a song is placed properly, it has the ability to make you feel double what the scene’s depicting. For example, the tv show tHE o.C. always had very good song placements. there would be a funeral and they’d play an Imogen Heap song and it would just spark you off. When you watch a film, you are thinking, ‘oh, my god, the song’s amazing.’ When it’s in the right place it kind of acts like a music video and it accentuates the emotion of the film. I guess the right song in the right place works really well in a film, whereas if it’s the wrong song in the right place or the right song in the wrong place, it doesn’t work.” Q: Can you explain a little bit about the process of putting the song together? a: “I wrote ‘all of the stars’ and recorded it with a guy called Johnny McDaid [Irish musician and producer], who I lived with all of last year in nashville and los angeles. We also made the record that I have coming out together (‘x’). It was all done in a basement on his laptop. He had this piano riff that starts off the song and I was humming over the riff and we wrote the first verse and then I left it for a little bit. I didn’t know where we were heading. I didn’t really know which direction it was going to take and then it ended up going in a kind of Coldplay, arcade Fire direction. It traveled a long way from the original idea. I started strumming the chords and I thought it was too simple to begin with, because it’s not a very complicated chorus, but it actually just works. I’m excited about the way it turned out. I think it suits the movie, which is positive. I like it.”

Prizes, or higher interest the choice is yours... Financial advice with Tom Munro www.tommunro.co.uk National Savings Premium Bonds have been around for a good number of years, offering a unique savings account where the interest earned is decided by a monthly prize draw. Each £1 buys a bond entered into the draw and winnings are tax-free. The minimum investment is £100 (or £50 for monthly standing orders), and from 1st June, the maximum amount you can invest is £40,000 following a change outlined in the recent Budget. Premium bonds can be purchased online at nsandi.com, in Post Offices, or by phone. Around 600,000 or so UK investors held the pre-Budget maximum of £30,000, but the recent rise will fuel the debate on the merits of the bonds, which are obtained through government-backed National Savings & Investments and currently held by around 21 million individuals. The current return on the bonds, which pay a range of prizes each month, is a tax-free 1.3pc, but not everyone receives this, it depends on how many prizes you win. If you hold £40,000 for example, you could expect an average return of £520 a year, equivalent to £43 each month and on some other occasions when it' could be slightly higher.

With some £47 billion invested in them, Premium bonds are clearly the UK’s most popular savings product despite the returns being so low, so one has to question whether they are worth it. As mentioned above, the prize rate, currently 1.3pc means that for every £100 paid into premium bonds, on average £1.30 a year is paid out, but the term ‘average’ is used loosely here as the smallest prize is £25. In other words, if say 20 people each invested £100, for someone to win more than £25, the remaining 19 would have to win nothing, extremely high odds indeed. In the battle of tax-free savings, even the overstated 1.3pc tax-free prize rate compares poorly. According to research engine Moneyfacts.co.uk with the top variable rate cash ISA offered through Coventry Building Society is currently paying 2.00pc. Alternatively, consider a one year fixed rate cash ISA with a number of rates on offer as high as 1.6pc, I know – these rates are not going to set the pulses racing however they are greater and carry less risk than the lottery of premium bonds.
