James McAvoy returns as Xavier in X-Men - Days Of Future Past. In an exclusive interview he talks about the challenges of shooting Cerebro screens, bonding with Nick Hoult and his “Sambuca trick”... Days of Future Past seems like an intense entry for the franchise… Yeah, it’s quite an intense film, isn’t it? I think all the X-Men films have been like that though. I think First Class was slightly less so, as that one was more emotionally intense at times, but it was also a little more camp, and more lighthearted at times as well. That definitely happens in this one too. We’ve brought some of the levity and some of the, perhaps, frivolity from First Class into this. You have to if you’re going to use the same cast. You can’t just go, “That part of you guys, the
part that got you the job last time? We don’t want that.” Bryan has taken two very different casts and he’s managed to meld them brilliantly. It’s a difficult job that he managed superbly. Did it feel like a huge movie even compared to First Class? It seemed bigger actually. It felt more epic in its scope. At least to me - we did a little bit of globetrotting, though not as much as the first one. But even in its own backyard, this one feels grander and maybe slightly more profound. It’s less about the relation-

ship between Erik and Charles, which was really the backbone of First Class, and Erik's real genesis as Magneto. This one feels more all-encompassing and about the fate of not just mutant kind, but all humankind, all Earth-bound kind. It's much larger in its stakes. So it did feel like you were going into a different year at school! How was it working with Bryan as the director? He’s arguably the man that re-kindled the audience’s interest in serious superhero movies. Not that you can't have fun with them, but he was one of the guys that started that wave of “You are allowed to take your superheroes seriously if you’d like.” And it felt like we were in very safe hands, not just because it was X-Men, but because he gets it… he just gets it. And he’s a really nice guy too. He's got to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, he makes massive movies, and you wonder if he's going to be so far removed from what you do. But he isn't; he's a lovely guy. and he changed scenes and lines around on the fly. Was that something you enjoyed? Yeah. I mean, don’t get me wrong; it’s never wildly off– it’s a line here and a line there. It’s like, “Hey, why don’t we tweak this and put that in?” To be honest with you, most films I’ve been on do that with the exception of a few. Most films need a bit of that, or ask for a bit of that, because what’s on the page will never truly be re-created perfectly off of it. Also, a movie becomes what it’s going to be in the first couple of weeks, and even more in the next couple of weeks, and even more in the next couple of weeks. Suddenly you’ve got something that is, if not in dialogue or structure, but actually in its feeling and its soul, a very different beast from what was on the page. You must adjust accordingly.
Michael Fassbender has told stories of BB gun fights between scenes, and how you and Nick cornered him once. Was he trying to score sympathy? No, that's all true. He'd been pretty nasty, actually, and he'd been doing a lot of shooting people from really close range, so we all turned on him. He was backed up in his trailer and I tried to enter through the skylight at one point. At another, I played possum and hid underneath another trailer waiting for him to finally come out. He'd covered himself from head to toe in wet weather gear, with hood up and collar up. He did look a bit like Ned Kelly, but he was also sweating profusely in 35-degree Celsius heat wearing all these waterproofs, trying to basically armour himself. And yet Nick Hoult still managed to get him on the 5% of his body flesh that was on display and raise a lump. We had a lovely bunch of people from the last movie, and the bond got stronger on this one. Did you get to work with Peter Dinklage? I didn’t get to work much with Peter, but I've done a movie with him once before and we got on like a house on fire. I love the guy; he's a funny, funny dude. So it was just hanging around and having chats with “Dinko,” but my enduring memory of Peter on this film will be him with his head tilted backwards and flames coming out of his mouth about six inches into the air because I'd lit a mouthful of Sambuca on fire in his mouth. So that was kind of awesome! I did that trick to nearly everyone in the cast except Sir Patrick, Sir Ian and Fan Bingbing. How much interaction did you have with the original cast? They were pretty much wrapped up by the time we got there, except for Hugh. I got to meet Sir Ian a few times and sit in the

trailer with him and Patrick, and talk about what it was like playing Magneto and Charles. I was having hair extensions put in that went down to my arse (I looked like Neil from The Young Ones ) and we didn't trim it until I was all in, so I looked like a reject from That 70s Show or Almost Famous, which was nice. Hugh was the only one who properly crosses over and that was a joy because I spent most of the film with him and Nick. I really got to know Nick properly. What a magical guy. And with Hugh - all of the stuff you see from him on the press tours, where he seems like the nicest guy‌ it's not an act. It's just him! What was the most challenging scene? Anything in Cerebro was quite challenging. Usually I don't mind doing all that green
screen stuff because your imagination gets you out of trouble and, hopefully, you're working with a really good script ( and I was on this ). But I found the Cerebro scenes really difficult in the first movie and really tough in this one, probably because you've got a pasta colander on your head and you don't have the svelte little helmet that Patrick gets to wear on the other movies. I'm retro, so I'm wearing a colander with wires coming out of it. I looked like Doc Emmett Brown from Back To The Future, so yeah, anything in Cerebro was a pain, but acting-wise, it always seemed like it wasn't happening in those scenes. Maybe it was because I was confined to a wheelchair but also confined to my body position by this super-heavy colander stuck on my dome. ///

Melancholia Showing on Netflix this month - review by Rachel Salveta A story of depression and the end of the world may not be the most upbeat theme for a movie, however writer/director Lars Von Trier proves that with great material comes great enjoyment with his movie 'Melancholia'. It is a slow moving yet emotionally engaging piece of film-making that examines how individuals cope; not only with day-to-day depression, but also with the idea of the end of the world.
extreme anxieties of her own with the threat of a mysterious new planet called Melancholia crashing into Earth. With her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland) assuring her that it is only meant to cross paths with Earth, she still can't help but be consumed with worry and as a result Justine steps in. However, in order to truly help her sister she will have to overcome her own depression and face life head on.
Our first introduction to new bride Justine (Kirsten Dunst) would have the viewer believe that she is a genuinely happy woman on the brink of a new life with the man she loves, however, as the film unfolds we realise that what is on the surface is far from the truth and that behind the smile is a deeply depressed and helpless human being. Struggling to deal with her sister's turbulent ways is Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who takes her under her wing. However, it seems that she is having
Von Trier creates an honest and unique portrayal of human interaction, and one of the most striking themes of the movie is the sister dynamic as we follow the lives of two young women who love and hate each other in equal measure. With superb performances and beautiful imagery interwoven throughout, it is a movie that explores dark topics in an extremely brave and touching way, making it a definite one-to-watch.

The Grand Budapest Hotel Review by Rachel Salveta From Wes Anderson, the director of the quirky 'Royal Tenenbaums' and 'Moonrise Kingdom' comes another stylish and unique piece of filmaking. His latest offering 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is packed full of colourful settings and even more colourful characters. Set in the fictional Republic of Zubrowska in the beginnings of World War II, 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' tells the story of a former lobby boy, Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori) who is befriended by the hotel's concierge, Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes) and subsequently becomes caught up in the theft and recovery of a priceless renaissance painting called 'Boy with Apple'. The story follows not only the goings on with the authorities in pursuit of the missing painting but also the blossoming friendship between the two hotel workers and the trust that forms. With a superb screenplay and excellent imagery throughout Wes Anderson has once
again created a film that goes far beyond the Hollyood norm and is sure to have the viewer enchanted by each and every scene. Admired for similar films that dare to be different, it seems his fans certainly won't be disappointed by this one. Ralph Fiennes shines in his role of the legendary concierge and seems right at home in this comedic role, while newcomer Tony Revolori brings his own sense of wit and individuality to his character. However, the film itself is a star studded affair with many other famous faces gracing the screen, including Jude Law, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody and Tilda Swinton to name a few. This all star cast come together to create something extremely rare in movies today providing the ultimate breath of fresh air. Filled with charm, wit and wacky characters, 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is a unique film experience that needs to be seen to be believed.

Prince - Hit & Run Tour Part II Live review - West Midlands Arena Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL opened their ‘Hit and Run Tour - Part II’ on May 15th 2014, at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England. Prince and the band (guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Nielsen, drummer Hannah Ford-Welton with additional musician’s keyboardists Joshua Welton and Cassandra O'Neal) took to the stage to play an astonishing set that mixed brand new songs, rarely performed tracks and old school classics from Prince's massive catalogue to a rapturous reception from the West Midlands Arena. The enigmatic icon arrived from America and was escorted from the airport straight to the arena for a brief soundcheck and last-minute rehearsal. Forty minutes later than the scheduled concert start time Prince holding a huge bunch of purple and cream balloons released them to the roof as the band launched into 2014’s ‘FUNKNROLL’. A turbo charged medley ensued with ‘Take Me With U’, ‘Raspberry Beret’, ‘Kiss’ and ‘Lets Go Crazy’ before Prince declared
‘soundcheck over!’ and the band moved into brand new material including a riotous version of the title track of the highly anticipated forthcoming 3RDEYEGIRL album ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM’ which is set for release this year. Lead track from the album ‘PRETZELBODYLOGIC’ was performed fully live for the first time. Running for nearly two and a half hours the set was a masterclass in the very best of Prince – incredible singing, electrifying guitar playing, breathtaking showmanship and some seriously funky moves! As well as leading the band Prince also took things down a notch with an evocative solo piano set which included ‘How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore?’ and ‘Diamonds and Pearls’, before bringing the band back for a selection of catalogue classics including ‘Controversy’, ‘1999’ and ‘Little Red Corvette’. After mixing it up with more hits the night closed with ‘Purple Rain’ and a curfew-defying version of ‘Play That Funky Music’.

Shakespeare
How did the idea of shakespeare's kids come about? Shakespeare's Kids (8YRS+ ) are the only organisation we are aware of that creates short Shakespeareian films using the actual Shakespeare text just edited to a managable size. The children give it a modern twist using music ranging from Lady Gaga to Taylor Swift and dances from Medieval to Bollywood. Gee Whizz also have a recording studio to produce the songs for the music videos featured in our films.
Sharon McNally of Shakespeare’s Kids tell us a bit about yourself. I completed my degree in literature just over 2 years ago and intended to set up Shakespeare's Kids as part of a Masters in Shakespeare with the RSC. I hoped to interest a group of around 10 young children from P4-P7 enough to work on some short scenes from Macbeth. I started of with around 30 local children and we began to film short scenes on our iPads. This gave me the idea to take the children to a historical site to capture some well known scenes on film. By a remarkable coincidence I contacted Allister Gourlay of Gee Whizz Digital Media only to find that we were neighbours and that he and his wife would be delighted to work with me to produce a short film version of Macbeth at Colzium Kilsyth. This had a cast of over 60 young children from ages 5yrs to 12yrs and has been highly praised by the Minister of Education, The GFT, Strathclyde University,
tell us about what is involved and what can kids/parents expect when the kids join. Little Shakespeare's was set up for children from ages 4-8yrs and they are often our little extras in the films. Using our huge selection of costumes and props their classes are designed to bring their favourite stories to life, acting out everything from 'Room On The Broom" to our own pirate stories. Their first film 'The Circus' is due to be shot in the Westerwood Hotel next month. We now have over 120 children with an extensive waiting list and hope to launch a number of new classes in August within Cumbernauld and surrounding areas. What has the response been like from both the kids and the parents? The response and support from parents has been incredible and we would not be where we are now without their constant enthusiasm and encouragement. This is a project that we have built as a community, with our children, and I feel incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far and excited about what comes next. Available since April 1999, ISAs offer an attractive tax-efficient investment to anyone aged 18 or over (16 or over for cash ISAs) With standard bank and building society savings accounts, taxpayers normally have to pay tax on any interest earned on their money. The tax is deducted from the interest before it is paid out, reducing the amount received. Similarly, tax must be paid on the income and profits made from investments in the stock market, either directly or through unit trusts and OEICs for example. ISAs, however, serve as a kind of 'wrapper' to protect savings from tax. This allows individuals to invest a maximum of £11,880 from 6th April in a range of tax efficient savings and investments, and pay no personal tax at all on the income and/or profits received. Recently, Chancellor George Osborne announced new ISA limits applicable from 1st July, allowing each UK
individual the opportunity to invest up to £15,000 into what is undoubtedly the UK’s most tax-efficient savings vehicle. The new higher level can be invested into both cash and stocks and shares and the ability to switch from one investment medium to the other has been introduced for the first time, offering complete flexibility and choice depending on your individual circumstances and objectives. As well as lump-sum investments, regular monthly amounts can be set-aside and even £100 per month growing at a modest 6% per annum [after costs] produces just short of £17,000 in ten years, so come on, let’s start to produce future nest-eggs as part of your long-term planning, you will never get a better opportunity to get into the savings habit. A well planned investment strategy can reap substantial rewards, so speak to a financial planner who will consider the best investment options with you after taking into account your personal financial position and tax position.
