I’m sure we will constantly be reminded throughout the month... As we are throughout the whole year... But let us not forget that May is official our Bishop Jonathan Jackson’s ‘Birth-month’ (his actual Birthday falls on May 15th). Let us keep our Bishop in prayer as we celebrate his life, dedication and hard work towards our church and God’s Kingdom. Presents will be accepted throughout the year! ;-)

Darcai s Testimony No! This time the answer is no, for sure! The enemy will use friends to make us sin, This will no longer happen anymore, I know that my goal is just to please Him. The pressure for some is just too insane, We understand that God is in control, Yet we still try to move on our pain, God can heal, bless and renew our dead souls. School can be a hurdle to overcome, From the stress of tests to choosing friends, Just remember that friends can be a problem, So the company we keep will determined what we reap. Personally, I know that it can be really difficult being a Christian and going to any normal school. I am currently in year 8 and I started my high school life in London. To be honest it was extremely hard. I started not knowing who I really was and whose I was. So I kept on chasing things and being who I wasn’t. I would go into school trying hard to fit in and please people. I was with a group of friends who wern’t the best choice. When they used to sin I never felt comfortable. I tried to not let anyone down, out of fear. Then one day whilst having a conversation with my step-dad, he warned me that the Lord had spoken to him about the friends that I was keeping and that the devil had assigned so-called ‘friends’ to lead me astray. That left me feeling convicted. It was difficult because I had a big reputation. I didn’t want to been seen as a loner who has ‘no friends‘. I knew that I couldn’t do this myself so I prayed that something will happen where I will leave the group. Within the space of 2 weeks they all turned on me and said that I was different and

they didn’t want me to be with them anymore. They all created an argument for no reason. To be honest, I felt upset but I knew that it was God who had answered my prayers. Now I’m in Birmingham. Yes, not all of my friends are Christians however they all accept me for who I am and what I stand for. So I encourage you all to stay strong in God, especially at school because it is hard to remain faithful to God at school with exposer to the world. When you remain faithful He will create a path for you to walk along. You also have to be careful of what you pray for because God surely does answer prayers. Trust me, it can get really hard, but from that experience I have learnt to trust, pray, believe and act.

Darcai Bailey, 13

hen the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” Genesis 4:9 Over the last few weeks I have been hearing from men that they have needed someone to talk to or pray with. I ask you, if you know ‘where is your brother’ (family member, friend or colleague)? You might say ‘I just spoke to them’ or ‘I spoke to them two days ago’ but have you asked them how they are doing? Not just asked for the sake of it but really asked how they are doing in life, whether they’re at a happy place in life or low down... If they need someone to talk to or to pray with. We need to take the time to care for each other. So if the Lord asks us “Where is your brother?” We can say, I know because I AM my brother’s keeper. Stay blessed Ajay

NTCG HIGHGATE

2015 PropheticDISCIPL

ANNUAL DISTRICT CONVENTION THE

A SEARCH FOR AUTHENTIC CHRISTL

Bishop of NTCG Highgate district and convention host Bishop Jonathan Jackson gives his thoughts and vision behind this year’s convention theme - The Prophetic Disciple

T

he Prophetic disciple realises the redemptive creative hand of God in every human being.

Prophetic Discipleship can be defined as rediscovering the mandate of Jesus through living out the prophetic message of piety, righteousness and justice. The Christian who’s conviction cannot be bought or sold but chases with passionate energy, the will and action of Jesus Christ responding the crisis with Godly compassion. It is a refreshed look at how to treat our neighbours, a distinctly Christ-like action towards each other as Christians and a greater action towards loving, caring and acting for people who have yet to receive Jesus as Lord and saviour. This is discipleship because we have a vision of the long term commitment to the mandate of Jesus Christ on earth so we practice this with faithful consistency Dr Cornel West comments “Nilism has created a world in which people have no humanity or love 8

for each other or compassion.” Are we then a complicit church that has created an environment of passivity and blindness to the agenda of God to a world that he feels needs this kind of redemptive action Nihilism is a disease of the soul. Nihilism is not overcome by arguments or analysis; it is tamed by love and care. Any disease of the soul must be conquered by a turning of one’s soul. This turning is done through one’s own affirmation of one’s worth - affirmation fueled by the concern of others. A love ethic must be at the centre of a politics of conversion. “A love ethic has nothing to do with sentimental feelings or tribal connections. Rather it is a last attempt at generating a sense of agency among a downtrodden people’”Dr C West - Race Matters p29 “Without a practical commitment to validate faith’s claim, what we say about God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit becomes nothing but pious talk that makes people feel good.” Dr James Cone - Speaking The Truth,1986p viii.

M A G A Z I N E

Prophetic thought is concept coined by the African American philosopher Cornel West. For West, prophetic thought speaks truth to power by tracking hypocrisy, engendering hope and challenging injustice. I intend to borrow West’s concept but tie it more closely to the Biblical tradition of eight century prophets and their commitment to social justice.

b. An active adherent, as of a movement or philosophy. 2. Often Disciple One of the original followers of Jesus. 3. Disciple A member of the Disciples of Christ.

A Disciple / discipleship - math-ay-tes’ - a learner, i.e. pupil:--disciple.

God bless Bishop Jonathan Jackson

MUSIC CORNER

NAOMI ‘NAMZ’ ELLIOTT Photography by: Alisha McCarthy

O

ur very own Alisha McCarthy caught up with new Gospel Neo Soul artist Naomi ‘Namz’ Elliott backstage at GL360’s ‘Manifest’ event at The Drum, to ask the Croydon raised (now living in Birmingham) and Music Performance student about her new single ‘Escape’ and upcoming EP ‘Gold Rush’ Alisha: Tell me what Escape is about? Naomi: Escape depicts the struggles that we go through daily. I played on light... Whenever light is blocked there are shadows that are created... The shadow idea comes from the film Peter Pan. It was his shadow that makes him misbehave... So if we stay closer to the light the shadow would be really small. But if we are away from the light then the shadow is really big. So it’s basically saying stay close to the light then that’s your way of escape.

A: That sounds quite personal, don’t you feel exposed when you go on stage and sing that song? N: Every single one of my songs is very vulnerable, and the songs that will be on my EP will be even more vulnerable than what it is now. The songs that I have written now, they are personal to me and you can connect with them but the tracks that are coming out are literally a personal testimony. So it put me in a completely different light where you see everything. I believe God has called me to be vulnerable

because if someone was vulnerable with me early on in my life then I could have been delivered way before I was. So I’m just trying to be that light to someone else. A: Do you write and produce your own material? N: Yes, I write and produce my own stuff but on some of my material I actually work with a producer from the States called Cliff Hotten. He’s a really amazing producer but the majority of my work I actually do produce myself. A: What inspired you to call you EP Gold Rush? N: It came from a photo-shoot I did around a gold goddess but when I looked at the picture I kept seeing strips of gold coming off of me and that depicted my life with the process that I’ve had to go through there’s been a lot of stripping that’s happened. A lot of things that people would called value have been taken, I lost my self worth at a point and this is a lot of what the EP is talking about. The stripping of everything that happened but it’s still precious and in that that’s where my song Rainbow came from because at the end of the day you don’t see the value of a diamond from the beginning where it started. You don’t se that it had values in the ground.
