MONTHLY MESSAGE
education
A
s we enter the month of September, Education Month for us here at The Rock, We are reminded of the responsibility that we each have to educate ourselves in the things of God. As disciples we have a responsibility to learn more about our Saviour and Lord, grow closer to Him in relationship through His Word and allow His Word to transform us. No other book in the world brings life, reconciles, transforms and heals. It guides, it instructs, it chastened and it exhorts. It is the Living Word, therefore let us seek the approval of God Almighty by studying His Word, having taken quality time to not only rightly interpret, but also exegete the Word of truth. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth II Timothy 2:15 (NKJV) Rev Julia Johnson

HAPPY NEWS CHOOLYEAR
I
t’s Education Month at The Rock, if you hadn’t worked that out already. I’m sure most of you are excited to be going back to school... But there are also some of you who are starting new schools, College or your first year of University... All very nerve racking, I’m sure... And then there is also the prospect for most of you doing those all important, dreaded end of year exams and it can all seem overwhelming before the year has even started! We spoke to two of our own young people to see how they managed to get through these daunting times and managaed to acheive the grades and qualifications they did.
GRACE MUPANEMUNDA, 19 I stayed at school (King Edward VI High School for Girls) for sixth form so my progression into sixth form was somewhat of a continuation. Although I had to work harder than I’d ever worked in my school life, I enjoyed sixth form and having all the opportunities and support provided by my school as well as the new freedom of being a sixth-former. The main things that changed were my relations with teachers and my attitude to work; I had to become much more independent. Teachers no longer chased after homework or spoonfed us information. I had to learn how to read and research for myself, and in order to get the highest grades sometimes that meant going beyond the basic requirements of the exam boards and pushing myself. The main thing I would advise is to pick your subjects very carefully. There are 3 points to consider when deciding what to study: 1. Do I like this subject? 2. Am I good at this subject? 3. Will it take me anywhere? Of course, you have to find the right compromise between those points; there’s no point doing maths or a science, which might seem like a strong subject if you aren’t good at it. Similarly, if you are extremely good at something that is looked at as a “softer” subject, your talent will carry you so go for it. Lastly, take on the advice of teachers and other adults when deciding subjects, sometimes they really do know better than us. I wouldn’t have taken French
4
A-level had it not been for my French teacher who encouraged me to do so, and it ended up giving me my best grade on results day. I applied for university while taking my A-levels. Although the application process was ten times harder than I could have ever imagined, after months of tests, interviews and waiting, I received my offers for medical school. I had picked relatively difficult A-level subjects – Chemistry, Biology and French - and revision was a long and antisocial process (I didn’t leave the house much), but in mid-August I received the grades I had wanted and more: A* and 3As. Consequently, I was able to confirm my place at Bristol Medical School where I will be starting in late September.
KORNER
RIOH BURKE, 22 When I started my A-levels I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do as a career. I had multiple interests but I did not have a clear trajectory of my life mapped out. For that reason I chose to do 5 A-levels. For some, the thought was madness, but for me, it was the best thing to do. After much deliberation, I chose a blend of subjects - my selection included my general interests as well as the subjects I per formed best in during my GCSE’s. In my view, this is a sensible option for anybody who is unsure about what they want to do next. My final selection was: Business Studies, E co n o m i c s, E n g l i s h Language a n d Literature, Government and Politics, and Law. In my opinion, A-levels are the hardest set of examinations a person will ever endure. This is because of the quantum leap you take from your GCSE’s. Admittedly, I got off to a rocky start because of this. Consider this: you are plunged into the deep end and you are expected to think and read for yourself - all of these were alien concepts to me at the time because I was used to getting spoon fed. For me, my
A-level experience was a learning curve! They taught me so much about myself. Two years (and a couple of resits) later I finished my A-levels, and my grades were amongst the top 1% in my institution. Having gained my A-level qualifications, I was off to university. I decided to study Political Economy at the University of Birmingham. My interest in political economy stemmed from my A-level experience. I realised I have an aptitude for all things political and economic. My choice of university was in-part influenced by a chat that I had with our Bishop Jonathan Jackson. He was really helpful and he walked me through the pros and cons of my selections. When I arrived at university I quickly learned that I was in an ‘adult learning environment’. I learned that just like my A-levels I was not going to get spoon-fed, rather I had to do everything for myself. I had to motivate myself to go to the library, get my assignments done, and talk to my lectures about anything I was unsure of. In order to make the most out of your degree don’t be afraid to ask questions. People are there to help. It’s what they get paid for. Use all of the resources you are given to their fullest. Having graduated from university with a First-Class degree, I am now off to study for an MSc Master’s degree in Security Studies at University College London. I was fortunate enough to win a scholarship so the £10,765 tuition fee has been paid for on my behalf. I have a strong interest in national security and energy security. In particular, I am interested in understanding the effect that security threats have on companies that trade internationally. After completing my masters I intend to go on to study for an MBA, after which I intend to become a senior manager of an multinational company.

THE GOOD TEACHER W
hat is man, that God should exalt him, that God should set Your heart on him, that God should visit him every morning, & test him every moment? (Job 7:17-18) I had a teacher that was strict. Every lesson, test after test, I would be called and questioned on the topic. I remember one day after class, crying & asking “Why do you always target me? Why do you hate me so much?!” The teacher held my hand, looked into my eyes and said “I see what you do not see. I test you and push you because you have so much potential and I know the tests don’t feel easy but they are there to equip you for your life ahead and you will appreciate it”. Is
this not similar to how God teaches us? When we go through something that doesn’t feel good and we cry out “God why?!“ we need to know the test is there for a reason, it may be painful because we have not been learning and God is correcting us. Sometimes we also go through our test just so we can teach others. No matter how it feels let us trust in Him and allow Him to teach us. “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty” (Job 5.17). Stay blessed Ajay

MAIN EVENT
With the NTCG HIGHGATE DISTRICT YOUTH CONVENTION fastly approaching (11th - 13th September) Highgate District Youth Pastor, Nathan Turner breaks down the theme, the weekend’s guests and what to expect from this years event.
i
Disciple intends to denote a youth of the 21st century who is fully gadgeted with technology, engaged in a 24 hour social media environment, and availed with limitless information, but somehow balances antiquated discipleship concepts like sacrifice, submission, solitude and service. The church is consistently behind the curve with technology and in this first year of exploration we need to address the sub theme of declaring ‘I Follow Jesus’ in the midst of all the other distractions that are happening. In July we had 12 young people baptised and beginning their discipleship journey and we want to see many more actively seek after and follow Jesus. We will be having some great speakers and psalmists over the weekend who will bring light to our young people through their knowledge understanding and experience in following Christ!

e had the privilege of having Chris da Ambassada share with us at NTCG The Rock as part of our Family & Community Service a few weeks ago (23rd August). I don’t think we were ready for what was about to happen! With his energy and no nonsense approach to his delivery coupled with the heavy bass, dancehall/bashment beats (played by Gospel DJ, DJ Proclaima) he had the whole congregation dancing. Whether you were part of the big crowd at the front of the stage or decided to drop a sneaky bogle in your seat, you just couldn’t ignore it! Chris da Ambassada has a new album out called ‘Changes’ (released in July) available on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play. With 15 tracks including bangers like ‘More Than A Conqueror’, remix of old Sunday School favourite ‘Let’s Dig a Hole’ and our favourite ‘I Can Feel It’... This track got about six wheelups on the night!... And with features from Jason Mighty, DJ Nicolas and his beatiful wife Chantelle, this album will make you feel good up, good up inna yuh yard...
